Canadian literature consists of many voices, ranging from indigenous peoples telling their stories to early immigrants chronicling their journeys. Since World War II Dutch-Canadian writers have added their voices to Canadian literature. Yet, with the exception of Guy Vanderhaeghe and Aritha van Herk, they receive limited scholarly attention in Canadian literary studies. This review of the early contributions of three Dutch-Canadian writers, John Terpstra, Hugh Cook, and Aritha van Herk, sheds light on their literary work, and shows that these Dutch-Canadian writers are recognized not as "foreign" or "immigrant" writers but have begun to break through the "CanLit" ceiling (Aponiuk 2015, 6, 51). Ukrainians have been in Canada for at least 120 years, and in the federal multiculturalism debates of the 1960s and 1970s, Ukrainian Canadian groups were one of the most vocal, pushing for a recognition of other ethnic identities alongside what was at that time the discourse of the day of "two founding nations." Interestingly, one of the ways that this ethnic group was able to make ground in these federal debates—ultimately leading to the policy shift from Biculturalism and Bilingualism to Multiculturalism and Bilingualism—was by making an argument for "founding fathers" status across the unbroken prairie. While there was a genuine desire for other ethnic identities to be recognized at the federal legal and political levels, there developed a realization by Ukrainian Canadians (and others) of the ways in which the sleight of hand required to place ethnic Ukrainians (among others) as the "first" inhabitants of the prairie space removed the pre-existing Aboriginal presence on that landscape. Many writers grapple with their awkward sense of wanting to honour their forbearers who did, in fact, emigrate and suffer great hardships, while simultaneously recognizing the colonial project that they have been co-opted into. Using contemporary literature, this article theorizes the relationship between the homesteaders and their descendents vis-à-vis Aboriginal presences in the prairie provinces. This article articulates four different models that authors use in an attempt to make sense of the simultaneous early presence of Ukrainian settlers and Aboriginal peoples across the Canadian landscape. This article explores the evolution of Ukrainian-Canadian literature written in English over the last fifty years. It begins by outlining how early Ukrainian-Canadian English-language literature posits a sense of ethnicity that is multiple as part of a marginalized Canadian underclass. I then argue that post-1980 there is a shift in the representation of ethnicity to depend upon identifiable Ukrainian elements. I advance this argument, first, through an analysis of pre-1980 literature by Vera Lysenko, Maara Haas, George Ryga, and Andrew Suknaski in contrast to post-1980 works by Haas, Ryga, and Suknaski. I include an analysis of other post-1980 Ukrainian-Canadian writers to show a shift away from representing ethnicity as undifferentiated and class-based to codifying Ukrainianness as a specific kind of ethnicity focusing on the nation. I conclude by attributing this shift in focus to the growing rhetoric of Canadian multiculturalism. As indicate by the title, this paper deals with three of the works of Egyptian-Canadian writer Saad Elkhadem (1932-2003): Wings of Lead(1971/1994), The Plague (1989), and Trilogy of the Flying Egyptian (Canadian Adventures of the Flying Egyptian 1990: Chronicle of the Flying Egyptian in Canada 1991; and Crash Landing of the Flying Egyptian 1992). The focus is the transnational themes harboured in these experimental novels that seem to bear the mark of the political and the collective value of utterances. The underlying narrative techniques used in the making of these complex experimental, bilingual mini-novels (Arabic/English) will be highlighted in view of the writer's contribution to Arabic-Canadian literature, his reception in Canada, and the linguistic choices he faced as a minority writer. As the title indicates, this paper deals with fundamental features pertaining to ArabicCanadian literature, a trilingual literature born in the early seventies at the hands of First Generation immigrants. It is written in three languages (French, English, Arabic), thereby fulfilling twice over the widely accepted definition of minor literatures. The article deals with such issues as who the authors are, what they write, where they write it, why they select the language they do and when this literature emerged as a distinctive entity. The reception of the authors in Canada and especially in Quebec is also dealt with. The sample bibliography at the end of the article gives an idea of the range of the genres produced.
