Collectively, studies of the structure of Neogene diversity change in tropical American mollusks have lacked 1) species- level analyses within well-established clades; 2) consideration of abundance and sample size on diversity estimates and comparisons; and 3) geographic comparisons within temporal intervals. This study takes all three factors into consideration and compares Miocene to Recent species richness patterns in tropical American marginellid gastropod species within the clade Prunum1Volvarina. Rarefaction analyses of more than 16,000 specimens from more than 500 samples are used to standardize comparisons of species richness through time and space. Species richness in Prunum1Volvarina from the Miocene to the Recent of the Tropical Western Atlantic (TWA) is compared along a latitudinal gradient from north to south (Florida, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela). Additionally, temporal patterns of diversity change are compared between the TWA and the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP: Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica). As is the case with most Neogene lineages, the number of marginellid specimens and samples differ significantly through both time and space. Rarefaction analyses of both specimens and samples indicate that: 1) significant geographic differences in species richness were detected between the Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene, and Recent of the TWA; 2) temporal patterns of species richness were similar in the northern and southern TWA; 3) from the Miocene to the Recent, marginellid species richness in the TEP has always been significantly less than TWA diversity; and 4) from the Miocene to the Recent, TWA diversity decreased significantly, whereas TEP diversity was stable and low. Separate rarefaction analyses using the numbers of specimens and samples did not always produce concordant results and indicate that the unit of analysis influences estimates of species richness. Discordant specimen/sample rarefaction results may be a product of sample size. Intrinsic ecological and evolutionary differences do not appear to be primary contributors to differences in marginellid species richness between the TEP and TWA.

We document a speciation event between two species of Prunum (Marginellidae: Gastropoda) in Pliocene strata of the northern Dominican Republic. The ancestral species, P. coniforme, is widely distributed in the Mio-Pliocene of the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and has a range of at least 11 m.y. The descendant species, P. christineladdae, is endemic to the northern Dominican Republic. The ancestral species persists after its descendant arises. The transition between species is marked by stratigraphic and morphologic intermediates, and occurs during an interval estimated to be between 73,000 and 275,000 years (representing 0.6-2.5 percent of the duration of the ancestral species). Although the transition takes more than a geologic instant, the overall pattern of morphologic change is best described by the model of punctuated equilibrium. The change between species apparently involved a habitat shift into deeper water, and occurred during accelerated deepening. All of the Neogene Dominican species of Prunum appear to have had depth-defined ranges.

Neogene deposits of the northern Dominican Republic contain a diverse fossil assemblage that is especially rich in corals and mollusks. To see if faunal change was concordant or discordant within and among taxa and decipher factors controlling distributions, we compared distributions of coral communities, the gastropod families Strombidae and Marginellidae, and the bivalve family Corbulidae. We also incorporated published ranges for the Cardiidae (Vokes, 1989), Cancellariidae (Jung and Petit, 1990), and the columbellid genus Strombina (Jung, 1986).First and last appearances of individual mollusk species were diachronous among sections. Within the sections, however, first and last appearances of mollusk species tended to coincide. Concordance of species ranges could be caused by unconformities or faults, be an artifact of sampling, or indicate similar responses by species to environmental changes. Neither stratigraphic gaps nor faults appear to correspond to concordant first or last appearances. Although the absence of mollusk taxa generally corresponds to less intense sampling, sampling intensity is highly correlated with the presence of macrofossils and therefore, taxa absence is probably real. First and last appearances do coincide with paleoenvironmental changes such as rapid deepening, introduction of marine conditions, increased intensity of erosional bottom currents, and changes from reefal to sand flat facies.Comparisons among taxa also helped elucidate other distributions patterns. For instance, comparing coral communities to strombid ranges showed that strombid diversity increased in grass flats (inhabited by free living corals) and reefal deposits, indicating similar ecologic preferences to many modern strombid species. Using the coral fauna to distinguish a grass flat community from other shallow marine facies also helped explain corbulid abundances as environmentally induced, with lower numbers in grass flat deposits.Simultaneous comparison of species distributions within diverse taxa can help explain the nature of species occurrences. For several mollusk taxa from the Neogene of the Dominican Republic, the general correspondence in distribution patterns across taxa indicates that paleoenvironmental conditions were controlling species distributions.

Paleontological studies can bring to light two important aspects of the speciation process: long term patterns of morphological change, and the paleoenvironmental context of such changes. We examined the temporal patterns of morphological change and their geographic and paleoenvironmental context in species of Prunum (Marginellidae; Gastropoda) from the Neogene of the northern Dominican Republic. We document a speciation event from P. coniforme (Sowerby 1849) to P. christineladdae (Maury 1917) which is unusual in both its temporal expression, and in the relative clarity of the ecological setting for speciation.We believe that the changes in morphology from P. coniforme to P. christineladdae represent a speciation event. The two species are distinguished by several shell features, including overall shape, spire height, relative height of the top of the lip, and apertural denticulations. The nature and magnitude of these differences, compared with morphological differences among extant species of Prunum, indicate that separate species designations are warranted for P. coniforme and P. christineladdae. A sequence of stratigraphic and morphological intermediates between these species provides strong stratophenetic evidence for speciation.The stratigraphic interval characterized by intermediate morphologies includes approximately 22 m of section. Sedimentation rates yield estimates of approximately 73,000–275,000 years for our interval of morphologic change. This transitional interval represents between 0.6–2.5 % of the total duration of the ancestral species.The patterns of morphological change exhibited by the two species generally fit the predictions of punctuated equilibrium; change from ancestor to descendent is relatively rapid, outside the transitional interval species exhibit no directional morphologic trends, and the ancestral species persists after speciation.Our data reveal some information on the mode of speciation. Prunum species from our study area exhibit well-defined depth ranges. P. christineladdae occurs only in deep water deposits, whereas P. coniforme is common in shallow water deposits. Based on distributional data, we suggest that depth, or one or more of its associated variables, was critical to the isolation and evolution of P. christineladdae.
