Studies were conducted for 12 wk from June 16 to September 8, 2003 and July 10 to October 4, 2004 with the objective of evaluating growth regulation, lateral regrowth, and injury of Tifway bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) × C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy Tifway] in response to two GA-inhibiting plant growth regulators, trinexapac-ethyl and flurprimidol. Trinexapac-ethyl was applied alone at 0, 0.052, and 0.104 kg ai/ha and flurprimidol alone at 0, 0.14, and 0.28 kg ai/ ha, plus all combinations. Applications were made every 3 wk for the duration of the study. Tifway bermudagrass clipping yield was reduced 33% and 54% by trinexapac-ethyl at 0.104 kg/ha at 4 and 8 wk after initial treatment (WAIT), respectively. Flurprimidol at 0.28 kg/ha reduced clipping yield 49% 8 WAIT. Lateral regrowth was reduced 20% 2 WAIT by trinexapac-ethyl at 0.104 kg/ha, and 26% 2 WAIT by flurprimidol at 0.28 kg/ha. Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the response of common lambsquarters to POST applications of halosulfuron–methyl plus 2,4-D admixtures and to investigate the effects of 2,4-D on the absorption, translocation, and metabolism of halosulfuron. In the greenhouse, halosulfuron at 0, 4.5, 9, 18, and 36 g ai/ha was applied alone and mixed with 2,4-D at 0, 17, 35, and 70 g ai/ha POST to 7.5- to 9-cm seedlings, and plant fresh weights were determined 4 wk after treatment (WAT). Halosulfuron alone did not control this weed, while fresh weights of common lambsquarters treated with 2,4-D declined hyperbolically as rates increased. A synergistic response for mixtures of these herbicides occurred, as observed fresh weights for all combinations were less than expected based on independent action and the calibrated marginal responses. In the laboratory, 7.5- to 9-cm seedlings were treated POST with commercially formulated halosulfuron at 9 and 18 g/ha and 2,4-D at 0, 70, and 140 g/ha, respectively, followed by foliar-applied14C-halosulfuron. Absorption of14C-halosulfuron increased with time, and absorption and translocation were not influenced by the addition of 2,4-D. Results from these studies inferred that halosulfuron and 2,4-D were generally synergistic on common lambsquarters and that mechanisms other than absorption, translocation, and metabolism may explain this response.

Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 to investigate postemergence tank mixtures of sethoxydim with various acetolactate synthase (ALS)- and non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides for weed control in sethoxydim-resistant (SR) corn. Giant foxtail control with sethoxydim was 96% and was equal to control with tank mixtures of sethoxydim plus bentazon, dicamba, dicamba plus atrazine, bromoxynil, and nicosulfuron plus bromoxynil. Giant foxtail control with sethoxydim plus atrazine, sethoxydim plus bentazon plus atrazine, and sethoxydim plus ALS-inhibiting herbicides plus 2,4-D was reduced to 60 to 89%. Common ragweed control was equal to or above 91% for tank mixtures that included bentazon plus atrazine, dicamba, dicamba plus atrazine, halosulfuron plus 2,4-D, and CGA 152005 plus primisulfuron plus 2,4-D, and the tank mixture of nicosulfuron plus bromoxynil. Current environmental concerns demand intensive research on conservation tillage for cotton production. Studies were conducted in 1994 and 1995 at Florence, SC, to evaluate weed and cotton response to various weed management systems in cotton with reduced tillage. Broadcast application of pendimethalin at 1.1 kg ai/ha and fluometuron at 2.2 kg ai/ha preemergence (PRE) followed by pyrithiobac at 0.07 kg ai/ha early postemergence (EPOST) was more effective than was a 38-cm band of these herbicides in controlling naturally occurring populations of sicklepod, Palmer amaranth, goosegrass, and southern crabgrass and in providing cotton yields equal to yields under weed-free conditions. With the 38-cm band of PRE and EPOST herbicides, two supplemental weed treatments at 3 and 7 wk after planting using glyphosate applied at 0.84 kg ae/ha POST with a hooded sprayer or a no-till cultivator was required to achieve acceptable weed control, but cotton yields were less than yields for the broadcast treatment ...

Field studies were conducted in South Carolina to evaluate the herbicides acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and imazaquin for control of Palmer amaranth and smooth pigweed in soybean, when applied 3 wk after weed emergence. Palmer amaranth was more difficult to control than smooth pigweed. Compared to untreated controls, acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and imazaquin reduced Palmer amaranth and smooth pigweed biomass 78 and 96%, 80 and 98%, and 82 and 99% at 30 d after treatment (DAT), 60 DAT, and at soybean harvest, respectively. The high rate (140 g/ha) of imazaquin provided greater control of Palmer amaranth than other herbicide treatments at soybean harvest. Except for the 140 g/ha rate of imazaquin, inadequate control of Palmer amaranth resulted in lower soybean seed yields for all herbicide treatments than the weed-free control. However, all herbicides controlled smooth pigweed to provide soybean seed yields similar to the weed-free control. Field studies were conducted in 1991 to 1993 to determine the effects of PRE and POST herbicides alone and in factorial combinations on sicklepod control, weed biomass, and soybean seed yields. Herbicides evaluated were metribuzin PRE, metribuzin + chlorimuron PRE, imazaquin PRE and POST, chlorimuron POST, and AC 263,222 POST POST herbicides alone provided better sicklepod control than PRE herbicides alone. However, sequential (SEQ) treatments [PRE followed by (fb) POST] provided better sicklepod control than single herbicide treatments. Metribuzin and metribuzin + chlorimuron alone or used in a SEQ program provided similar PRE control of sicklepod, and both controlled sicklepod better than imazaquin in 1991 and 1992. Chlorimuron alone or in a SEQ program provided better POST control than AC 263,222 or imazaquin alone when soil moisture levels at planting favored weed seed germination. When soil moisture levels at planting were unfavorable for weed seed germination, the residual activity of imazaquin provided the best season-long control. SEQ herbicide applications allowed soybean to attain higher seed yields than single (PRE or POST) herbicide treatments all 3 yr. However, only metribuzin fb chlorimuron in 1991 and 1992 and imazaquin fb imazaquin and imazaquin fb chlorimuron in 1993 allowed soybean to achieve seed yields similar to weed-free soybean. Soybean seed yields were greater with POST than with PRE herbicides 2 of 3 yr, but no single herbicide treatment provided soybean seed yields similar to weed-free soybean.

Field experiments were established to evaluate coffee senna control in cotton with registered PRE, early POST-directed (EPD), and late POST-directed (LPD) herbicides and with pyrithiobac applied PRE and early POST. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE controlled coffee senna 87 and 65%, respectively, 6 wk after planting (WAP). Methazole applied EPD controlled coffee senna 96% 2 wk after application, whereas fluometuron and MSMA applied EPD controlled 70 and 16%, respectively. LPD applications of cyanazine, diuron, and prometryn averaged only 45% control 8 WAP. MSMA applied LPD controlled coffee senna only 12%. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE followed by methazole applied EPD and cyanazine applied LPD controlled coffee senna 98 and 99% 6 WAP, respectively. PRE, early POST, and PRE followed by early POST applications of pyrithiobac controlled coffee senna 88, 89, and 95% 6 WAP, respectively. Seed cotton yields were similar to weed-free cotton with all treatments except MSMA applied EPD and the LPD treatments, all of which provided unacceptable (12 to 49%) control 8 WAP.

Competitive relationships between johnsongrass, smooth pigweed, and soybean were examined in 1986 and 1987, and the adequacy of an additive response model (ARM) and product response model (PRM) in predicting yield reductions due to multispecies weed populations was assessed. A severe drought reduced soybean yields statewide in 1986, whereas ideal conditions for soybean production were experienced in 1987. Averaged over monospecific weed densities of 1, 2, 4, and 8 plants 4.6 m−1of row, smooth pigweed intercepted 2.5 and 1.8 times more light than johnsongrass in 1986 and 1987, respectively. In multispecies populations having either 4 or 8 smooth pigweed plants 4.6 m−1of row, light interception by johnsongrass was negligible. Averaged over monospecific weed densities, smooth pigweed produced 5160 and 1760 kg ha−1, while johnsongrass produced 1530 and 450 kg ha−1dry weight in 1986 and 1987, respectively. In multispecies populations, smooth pigweed contributed more than 80% of the total weed biomass. As monospecific johnsongrass density increased, reductions in soybean seed yield were linear, whereas exponential response patterns adequately characterized reductions in soybean seed yield due to smooth pigweed interference. Based on calibrated monospecific responses, the ARM and PRM generally projected higher soybean seed yield reductions for multispecies weed populations than were observed. When crop production conditions were favorable and competitive effects of weeds were low, both models adequately predicted soybean seed yield reductions. When dry conditions unfavorable for crop production existed, the PRM best accommodated the interactive effects between johnsongrass, smooth pigweed, and soybean.

Field studies were conducted in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate sicklepod control with combinations of imazaquin + metribuzin at lower than normal use rates. Soybean was seeded in late-May to early-June each year and imazaquin and metribuzin were applied PPI alone at 0.75 and 1x and 0.5, 0.75, and 1x their registered rates, respectively, and in factorial combinations of their 0.5 and 0.75x rates. The registered (1x) rates for imazaquin and metribuzin on this soil type are 0.14 and 0.43 kg/ha, respectively. Several standard sequential treatments and flumetsulam + trifluralin PPI at 0.06 + 0.70 and 0.07 + 0.95 kg/ha were included for comparison. Sicklepod control and soybean seed yield responses differed between 1993 and 1994. In 1993, the combinations of imazaquin + metribuzin averaged 90% control 6 wk after planting (WAP) and soybean seed yield increased 75% compared to the untreated check. Imazaquin + metribuzin at their respective 0.5x rate was as effective as any treatment evaluated. In 1994, sicklepod control was generally lower with all treatments. Soybean seed yield was reduced due to sicklepod interference with soil-applied treatments alone. However, imazaquin + metribuzin at their respective 0.75x rate provided sicklepod control levels and reductions in weed biomass similar to those observed with flumetsulam + trifluralin at 0.07 + 0.95 kg/ha and the sequential treatments, and increased soybean seed yield 19% compared to the untreated check.

Growth and development of selected dinitroaniline-resistant (DR) and -susceptible (DS) goosegrass populations were compared in field studies in replacement series, in association with cotton, and under noncompetitive conditions. The DR ‘Florence’ (FR) and DS ‘Orangeburg’ (OS) populations were similar in competitiveness as indicated by relative yields (RY) and relative crowding coefficients (RCC) for vegetative and reproductive biomass production in a replacement series. Relative growth of the FR and DS ‘Anderson’ (AS) populations in replacement series was similar when vegetative biomass was considered, but reproductive biomass of the AS population declined as proportion of FR population increased. RCC values also indicated that the FR population interfered with reproductive development of the AS population. In field studies, the FR population produced greater vegetative biomass than either DS population, while similar reproductive biomass occurred for the FR and OS populations. Inflorescence dry weights were greater for the FR than the AS population under noncompetitive conditions and in cotton, but were greater for the AS population in replacement series studies. The competitiveness of DR and DS goosegrass biotypes appears to be more related to growth characteristics of individual populations than to response to dinitroaniline herbicides.

POST control of cowpea in cotton was evaluated in 1990 and 1991. Early POST-directed (EPD) application of fluometuron + MSMA provided 89% cowpea control 2 wk after treatment. Cowpea control 4 wk after the early treatments was similar with fluometuron + MSMA EPD and sequential directed applications of MSMA followed by (fb) MSMA, methazole + MSMA fb cyanazine + MSMA, and fluometuron + MSMA fb cyanazine + MSMA. The average reduction in cowpea biomass 12 wk after planting with these treatments was 93%. MSMA fb MSMA POST-directed was the only treatment with a lint cotton yield similar to that of weed-free cotton. Lint cotton yields with fluometuron + MSMA, methazole + MSMA fb cyanazine + MSMA, and fluometuron + MSMA fb cyanazine + MSMA were similar to those obtained with MSMA fb MSMA.

Field studies were conducted in 1988 and 1989 to examine the interrelations of cultivation and herbicide band width in controlling pitted morningglory and sicklepod in soybean. Alachlor + imazaquin PRE followed by imazaquin + surfactant POST were not applied or were applied on bands 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 cm wide or were broadcast. Plots were cultivated zero, one, two, or three times. Without cultivation, at least a 60-cm wide band was needed to achieve maximum soybean seed yields. A slight linear increase in soybean seed yield in response to increasing band width was observed with one cultivation. With two cultivations, soybean seed yields were similar with and without herbicides, but a 15-cm wide herbicide band was needed to achieve maximum production with three cultivations. Greatest gross returns exclusive of weed management costs were realized with two or three cultivations and a 15-cm wide band.

Trifluralin-resistant Palmer amaranth populations were confirmed at eight locations within two of the ten-county cotton growing region of South Carolina. Different levels of resistance to six dinitroaniline herbicides were observed, but no resistance was observed to herbicides from nine other chemical groups. Five to six times more trifluralin was required to control a resistant than a susceptible biotype under field conditions.

Field experiments were conducted to compare the timing of non-selective herbicide application on common lambsquarters under reduced tillage culture after wheat harvest. Common lambsquarters was controlled more effectively with herbicides applied to plants that were allowed to recover from removal of topgrowth during wheat harvest. When herbicides were applied immediately after wheat harvest, only glufosinate (HOE-39866) at the low and medium rates provided greater than 70% control.

A comparative study of the growth and development of several populations of dinitroaniline-susceptible (DS) and -resistant (DR) goosegrass [Eleusine indica(L.) Gaertn. # ELEIN] biotypes was conducted under noncompetitive field conditions. Plant height and width, number of tillers, aboveground dry weight, relative growth rate (RGR), number of inflorescences/plant, total inflorescence dry weight, individual inflorescence dry weight, number of spicate branches/inflorescence, and flag leaf length and width were recorded periodically during the growing season. There were no significant differences between biotypes in most characteristics with the exception of total inflorescence dry weight. The DS biotype produced more total inflorescence dry weight than the DR biotype at 8 and 13 weeks after transplanting. Significant variation among DS and DR populations occurred in 37 and 33 of 56 evaluations, respectively. When variation existed within a biotype, populations exhibited broad ranges of response for the various growth parameters. With the exception of total inflorescence dry weight, DS and DR biotypes generally exhibited similar ranges of variability.

The effects of tobacco thrips (Frankliniella fuscaHinds) control and herbicides on peanut (Arachis hypogaeaL. ‘Florigiant’) canopy development and competition with large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis(L.) Scop. # DIGSA] were examined in field experiments during 1983 and 1984. Greater early-season peanut canopy development generally occurred when tobacco thrips were controlled with aldicarb [2-methyl-2-(methylthio) propionaldehyde-O-(methylcarbamoyl)oxime]. Tobacco thrips control did not affect large crabgrass dry weights or peanut seed yields with no herbicide, alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide], vernolate (S-propyl dipropylcarbamothioate) + benefin [N-butyl-N-ethyl-2,6-dinitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] + alachlor, and handweeding + sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio) propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}. Averaged across weed control levels, large crabgrass dry weights with and without aldicarb were 320 and 310 g/m2in 1983, and 260 and 250 g/m2in 1984, respectively. Peanut seed yields with and without aldicarb were 1550 and 1630 kg/ha in 1983, and 2870 and 2920 kg/ha in 1984, respectively.

Field experiments were conducted during 1985 and 1986 to determine the response of soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. ‘Coker 156’], pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosaL. # IPOLA), and ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea(L.) Jacq. # IPOHE] to acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}, fomesafen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl) phenoxy]-N-(methylsulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzamide}, and lactofen {(±)-2-ethoxy-1-methyl-2-oxoethyl-5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-dinitrobenzoate}. Acifluorfen and lactofen were more phytotoxic to soybean 15 days after treatment (DAT) than fomesafen. All herbicides at low rates controlled 80% or more pitted morningglory. However, only the high rates (0.6 kg ai/ha) of acifluorfen and fomesafen controlled 80% or more ivyleaf morningglory 90 DAT. Full-season competition from untreated pitted morningglory reduced soybean seed yields 44 and 22% in 1985 and 1986, respectively, compared to 58 and 49% with untreated ivyleaf morningglory. Soybean seed yields were higher in plots receiving acifluorfen or fomesafen applications than lactofen applications.

The presence of a common cocklebur (Xanthium strumariumL. # XANST) population resistant to organic arsenical herbicides was confirmed in three adjoining counties of South Carolina's ten-county cotton-growing region, but little evidence of resistance was found in the remaining seven counties. This population was resistant to both disodium salt of methylarsonic acid (DSMA) and monosodium salt of methylarsonic acid (MSMA) but not to herbicides from nine other chemical groups. A much greater level of resistance was apparent in the field than under greenhouse conditions and larger plants were more resistant than small plants.

Seed dormancy and soil longevity characteristics of three weedy cowpea [Vigna unguiculata(L.) Walp.] cultivars were investigated. Seed germination was maximum at 40 C; however, ‘Clay’ had greater germination than ‘Black’ or ‘Red Ripper’ cowpea at temperatures ≥ 20 C. Concentrated sulfuric acid soaks, hot (70 C)-water soaks, and piercing the seed coat promoted germination. Seed with an initial water content of 12.3% were stored at relative humidities ranging from 0 to 60% at 25 C. After 4 weeks of storage at relative humidities of 0 to 50%, seed water content varied from 4.6 to 11.4%. Germination and hard seed content was 11% or more and 89% or less, respectively, for seed with water content ranging from 6.9 to 11.4%. Except for seed with an initial water content of 6.9%, cowpea seed water content increased after 3 weeks of storage in a 70% relative humidity environment. Rehydration increased germination for seed with initial water content of 9.2% or more, but not for seed with initial water content of 8.4% or less. In mid-November 1981 and 1982, Black, Clay, Red Ripper, and sicklepod (Cassia obtusifoliaL. # CASOB) seed were buried at soil depths of 2.5, 7.5, and 15 cm for 3, 6, and 9 months. Seed survival of Black and Red Ripper was similar to that of sicklepod; however, longevity of Clay seed was less than sicklepod. Survival was greater for seed buried in 1981 than in 1982 because of low seed water content of the 1981 seedlots.

Acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and thiameturon were compared in single and sequential treatments for cowpea control in soybean. Chlorimuron applied once at 8.8 g ai/ha at 14, 21, and 28 days after cowpea emergence controlled 80% or more of cowpea. Control was greater at 14 and 21 than at 28 days after emergence in one of three experiments. Cowpea control by chlorimuron was similar with single and sequential treatments. Soybean injury was lower, and soybean seed yields generally were higher with chlorimuron than with thiameturon or acifluorfen. Thiameturon and acifluorfen controlled less than 60% of cowpea. Three weedy cowpea cultivars responded the same to chlorimuron, but cowpea recovery was substantial in 1 of 3 yr.

Agriprofessionals and technical college students took an examination without and with simple dichotomous keys. Without keys, only 15% and 30% of the agriprofessionals identified 71% or more of the grass and morningglory species (Ipomoea spp. #3 IPOZZ), respectively; 97% scored in this range for both weed groups with keys. Without keys, no student scored higher than 40% or 30% on grass and morningglory species, respectively. With keys, all students identified more than 60% and 50% of the grasses and morningglories, respectively. For grasses, only 3% of the agriprofessionals and none of the students achieved an excellent (>90%) score without keys, while 56% and 8% did with keys. Twelve percent and 65% of the agriprofessionals achieved an excellent score on the morningglory species without and with keys, respectively; 42% of the students scored higher than 80% with keys. Application of chlorimuron and imazaquin at 0.28 kg ai/ha to field-grown sicklepod at early bloom and early fruit stages in 1984 and 1985 almost eliminated seed production. In addition, none of the seed produced following these treatments were capable of emergence during a 4-week period following acid scarification. Glyphosate applied at 0.28 kg ai/ha at early bloom decreased seed production 84% but did not affect seedling emergence in 1984, and precluded production of seed capable of emergence in 1985. Glyphosate applications at the early fruit stage reduced the number of seed that emerged 93 and 90% in 1984 and 1985, respectively. Application of 2,4-DB at 0.28 kg ai/ha and 2,4-D at 0.56 kg ai/ha at early bloom did not affect seed production or emergence in 1984 but almost eliminated production of seed capable of emergence in 1985. Applications of 2,4-DB and 2,4-D at the early fruit stage decreased the number of seed that emerged 99 and 52% in 1984 and 46 and 57% in 1985, respectively. Herbicide applications at the late fruit stage were generally less effective than earlier applications in reducing seed production and emergence.

‘Ransom’, ‘Govan’, and ‘Bragg’ soybeans [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] were seeded in 30-, 61-, and 91-cm row spacings to achieve a uniform population of 323 000 plants/ha. In 1979 and 1980, shade development within the row was similar for all row spacings, but 15 cm from the row the inflection point occurred earlier when soybeans were seeded at the 30-cm row spacing. In 1979, shading 30 cm from the row was similar with the 61- and 91-cm row spacings, but in 1980 the 61-cm row spacing provided earlier shading. Shading within the row and 15 and 30 cm from the row was similar for all cultivars in 1979, but Govan and Bragg shaded row middles earlier than Ransom at the 91-cm row spacing. In 1980, shade development in the row was similar for all cultivars, but delayed shading was observed between the rows with Ransom. In 1979, maximum soybean seed yields were produced with 2, 2, and 0 weed-free weeks at the 30-, 61-, and 91-cm row spacings, respectively. In 1980, 2 weed-free weeks prevented soybean seed yield reductions at all row spacings. In 1979, Ransom, Bragg, and Govan required 4, 2, and 0 weed-free weeks, respectively, for maximum seed yields. In 1980, all cultivars achieved maximum seed yields with 2 weed-free weeks.
