We can obtain a two-fold symmetric figure by folding a square sheet of paper in the middle and then cutting along some curves drawn on the paper. By making two perpendicular folds through the centre of the paper and then cutting, we can obtain a four-fold symmetric figure. We can also get an eight-fold symmetric figure by making a fold bisecting an angle made by the two perpendicular folds before cutting. But it is not possible to obtain a three-fold, five-fold or six-fold symmetric figure in this way; we need to make more folds before cutting. Making a three-fold (respectively five-fold and six-fold) figure involves the division of the angle at the centre (360°) of a square sheet of a paper into six (respectively ten and twelve) equal parts. In other words, we need to construct the angles 60°, 36° and 30°. But these angles cannot be obtained by repeated bisections of 180° by simple folding as in the making of two-fold, four-fold and eight-fold figures. In [1], we see that each of the constructions of 60° and 30° applies the fact that sin 30° = ½ and takes only a few simple folding steps. The construction of 36° is more tedious (see, for example, [2] and [3]) as sin 36° is not a simple fraction but an irrational number. In this Article, we show how to make, by paper-folding and cutting a regular pentagon, a five-pointed star and create any five-fold figure as we want. The construction obtained by dividing the angle at the centre of a square paper into ten equal parts is called a pentagon base. We gained much insight from [2] and [3] when developing the method for making the pentagon base to be presented below.

A class of games for finding a leader among a group of candidates is studied in detail. This class covers games based on coin tossing and rock-paper-scissors as special cases and its complexity exhibits similar stochastic behaviors: either of logarithmic mean and bounded variance or of exponential mean and exponential variance. Many applications are also discussed.

In this note we re-examine the analysis of the paper "On the martingale property of stochastic exponentials" by B. Wong and C.C. Heyde, Journal of Applied Probability, 41(3):654-664, 2004. The concept of a metaplectic form was introduced about 40 years ago by T. Kubota. He showed how Jacobi-Legendre symbols of arbitrary order give rise to characters of arithmetic groups. Metaplectic forms are the automorphic forms with these characters. Kubota also showed how higher analogues of the classical theta functions could be constructed using Selberg's theory of Eisenstein series. Unfortunately many aspects of these generalized theta series are still unknown, for example, their Fourier coefficients. The analogues in the case of function fields over finite fields can in principle be calculated explicitly and this was done first by J. Hoffstein in the case of a rational function field. Here we shall return to his calculations and clarify a number of aspects of them, some of which are important for recent developments.

AbsrtactStaring form a probability σ on the half-line moments of any order A. G. Pakes has defined probabilities σr, by length biasing order r and gr, by the stationary-excess operation of order r, r = 1, 2,…Examples are given to show that σ can bt determined in the Stieltjes sence while σ1 and g1 are indeterminate in the Stieltjes sence. This shows that a statement in a recent paper by Pakes does not hold.

This paper presents a sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Dirac operator with a potential tending to infinity at infinity to have no eigenvalues. It also provides a quick proof (and suggests variations) of a related criterion given by Evans and Harris.

SynopsisSome disparate ideas in the literature are drawn together. The work of P. J. Olver and his associates on Lagrangians which vanish for arbitrary variations, the so-called null Lagrangians, is viewed as a parallel development to Witten's study of topological field theories. A theorem of Olver, that all hyperjacobians are expressible as divergences, and are thus candidates for the construction of null Lagrangians, is shown to follow directly from the observation that such entities appear in a power series development of the general associative product, and this technique facilitates the construction of multi-dimensional examples.

In the second paragraph on page 30 [ 1 ], we wrote ‘Making a critical point precritical decreases the number of points about which we have to worry’. Indeed, we stopped worrying about these points so much, that we forgot to mention them in several statements. This includes Lemma 3.13, Theorem 3.14 and the Main Theorem. Thus, the possibility of critical points being precritical (not only sinking or recurrent) has to be added to those statements. In particular, the Main Theorem should read as follows.

It is shown that an immersion of n dimensional compact oriented manifold without boundary into the n+1 dimensional Euclidean space, hyperbolic space or open half sphere is a totally umbilic immersion if one of the mean curvature function H_l does not vanish and the ratio H_k/H_l is constant, 1\leq k, l \leq n, k\ne l.

In our paper [1], in the proof of Proposition 1, we implicitly assume that the polynomial P is monic, although later we apply this proposition to polynomials which are not monic. The following corrections should be made in the proof of Proposition 1.

Recently, Saleh claimed to have solved `a long standing open question' in Topology; namely, he proved that every almost continuous function is closure continuous (= $\theta$-continuous). Unfortunately, this problem was settled long time ago and even a better result is known., Comment: 2 pages, to appear in "Glasgow Math. J."

The mechanical procedure of paper folding generates an uncountable family of infinite sequences of fold patterns. We obtain the associated Fourier series and show that the sequences are almost periodic and hence deterministic. Further, we show that paper folding numbers defined by the sequences are all transcendental.

Consider the first order differential equation (1) , where pi, and τi, for i = 1,…,n, are positive constants. To find necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the coefficients and the delays only, under which all solutions of (1) oscillate, is a problem of great importence. In a recent paper, Bowcock and Yu claimed that is a necessary and sufficient condition for all solutions of (1) to be oscillatory. In this paper a counterexample shows that the above result is not valid and the error in this paper is indicated.

Both paper and author (D. R. McNeil, (1968)) will be referred to below as DRM. The said paper deals with the following situation: an intersection is controlled by a traffic light with a fixed cycle time, T; the possibility of other delays, e.g., due to turning vehicles, is ignored; arrivals at the light form a compound Poisson process; if vehicles arrive to find the light green and the queue empty they are not delayed, while in the contrary case they depart when they reach the head of the queue, providing the light is green, each vehicle taking a constant time to move off. It has recently been found that my previous paper “On generalized semi-primary rings and Krull-Remak-Schmidt’s theorem” Jap. Journ. Math. 19 (1949) — referred to as S. K. — contained in its Theorems 19 and 20 some errors. Nevertheless the writer has been able to correct them in suitable forms so that most parts of both theorems hold, even under a weaker assumption, and also subsequent theorems remain valid. These will be, together with some supplementary remarks, shown in the present note.

The proof of Theorem 1 in the paper “On Krull’s conjecture concerning valuation rings” (vol. 4 (1952) of this journal) is not correct. We want to give here a corrected proof of the theorem: From p. 30, l. 14 to p. 31, l. 7 should be changed as follows.

In a recent paper Weiss (1965) has suggested a simple model for a carrier-borne epidemic such as typhoid. He considers a population (of size m) of susceptibles into which a number (k) of carriers is introduced. These carriers exhibit no overt symptoms and are only detectable by the discovery of infected persons. He supposed that after the initial introduction of the carriers, the population remains entirely closed and no new carriers arise. The epidemic then progresses until either all the carriers have been traced and isolated or until the entire population has succumbed to the disease.

Let Em and En be orthogonal Euclidean spaces of dimensions m and n respectively and with the origin of each as their only common point. In a previous paper (3) I gave what was intended to be a proof of the relationwhere the dimension of A, dim A, is the Besicovitch dimension, i.e. the number s such that the Hausdorff measure in any dimension greater than s is zero whilst that in any dimension less than s is infinite, where A and B are subsets of En and Em respectively and where A × B is the Cartesian product of A with B.

In two recent papers of Conner and Floyd ((2)) and ((3)), the additive structure of the SU-cobordism (or bordism) ring was completely determined. The object of this note is to point out that their results can also be used to determine the somewhat complicated multiplicative structure.

The circumstances explained in the footnote on p. 61 of the former paper with this title might well have necessitated a re-writing of the whole. Fortunately it appears that only a few short comments are required. For example it may be noted that the first question in §4 can be answered by counting the degrees of freedom in the two configurations. Eight points of a twisted cubic have freedom 20; four pairs of planes drawn at random through four lines of a regulus have freedom 21; therefore the eight planes of the second paragraph of §4 cannot always lead back to the eight points of §2. This is corroborated by the corresponding numbers in [4], which are 31 and 34.

The utilisation factor for a discrete dam, defined as the stationary probability of non-emptiness of the dam just before release, is obtained for a class of models that includes the Odoom–Lloyd model, the Anis–Lloyd model, the model of Herbert, etc. The method used points to a different approach to measuring dam utilisation via the actual utilisation, which appears to be more fruitful, and this is discussed in the last section.

It is shown that a result by Moeckel holds not only for admissible subgroups of SL (2, ℤ), but also for arbitrary subgroups of finite index.

Everitt has shown [1[, that for α ∊ [0, π/2] the undernoted problem (1.1–2) with an indefinite weight function r can be represented by a selfadjoint operator in a suitable Hilbert space. This result is extended to arbitrary α ∊ [0, π), replacing the Hilbert space in some cases by a Pontrjagin space with index one. The problem is also treated in the Krein space generated by the weight function r.

Applying a new and very elegant method of proof of the Schur-Hardy inequality, given by E.R. Love at the Oberwolfach conference on Linear Spaces and Approximation (1977), norm estimates of integral operators with homogeneous kernels are established in the setting of abstract function norms. Applications to Flett's inequality, to integral means, and to fractional integrals are given.

A ring R is called, according to [2], a left p.p. ring if any principal left ideal of R is projective. A ring which is left and right p.p. is called a p.p. ring.In this short note we shall give some additional remarks to A. Hattori [2]. In Proposition 1 we shall give a characterization of commutative p.p. rings, and in Proposition 3 we shall give a generalization of Proposition 17 and 18 in [2], which shows also that the modified torsion theory over commutative p.p. rings coincides with the usual torsion theory.

We give another formulation of Theorem 1 of Ribenboim's paper, Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 2 (1970), 81–88. Our condition on a module to be totally ordered such that this order extends a given strict order seems to be more useful for applications than condition (2) of Ribenboim. This is shown for example in Corollaries 3 and It of our paper. Corollary 4 is due to Ribenboim. Corollary 3 generalizes the corresponding well known result on abelian groups.
