Recently, Saleh claimed to have solved `a long standing open question' in Topology; namely, he proved that every almost continuous function is closure continuous (= $\theta$-continuous). In [5] Doeblin considered some classes of finite non-homogeneous Markov chains and gave without proofs several results concerning their asymptotic behaviour. In the present paper we first attempt to make Doeblin's results precise and try to reconstruct his arguments. Subsequently we investigate more general situations, where a state space decomposition is provided by the sets occurring in the representation of the atomic sets of the tail or-field. We show that Doeblin's notion of an associated chain, as well as considerations regarding the tail ar-field structure of the chain, can be used to solve such cases. This paper presents an approach, based on interpolation theory of operators, to the study of interpolating sequences for interpolation Banach spaces between Hardy spaces. It is shown that the famous Carleson result forH∞can be lifted to a large class of abstract Hardy spaces. A description is provided of the range of the Carleson operator defined on interpolation spaces between the classical Hardy spaces in terms of uniformly separated sequences. A key role in this description is played by some general interpolation results proved in the paper. As by-products, novel results are obtained which extend the Shapiro–Shields result on the characterisation of interpolation sequences for the classical Hardy spacesHp. Applications to Hardy–Lorentz, Hardy–Marcinkiewicz and Hardy–Orlicz spaces are presented.

This is the first of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this first paper, we prove rough estimates for the Green function. Along the way, we introduce the notion of relative automaticity which will be useful in both papers and we show that relatively hyperbolic groups are relatively automatic. We also define the notion of spectral positive recurrence for random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups. We then use our estimates for the Green function to prove that $p_n\asymp R^{-n}n^{-3/2}$ for spectrally positive-recurrent random walks, where $p_n$ is the probability of going back to the origin at time n and where R is the inverse of the spectral radius of the random walk.

The Σ-invariants of Bieri–Neumann–Strebel and Bieri–Renz involve an action of a discrete group G on a geometrically suitable space M. In the early versions, M was always a finite-dimensional Euclidean space on which G acted by translations. A substantial literature exists on this, connecting the invariants to group theory and to tropical geometry (which, actually, Σ-theory anticipated). More recently, we have generalized these invariants to the case where M is a proper CAT(0) space on which G acts by isometries. The “zeroth stage” of this was developed in our paper [BG16]. The present paper provides a higher-dimensional extension of the theory to the “nth stage” for any n.

The purpose of this paper is to formulate general conditions for which the answer is positive.

This paper explores versions of the Yoneda Lemma in settings founded upon FM sets. In particular, we explore the lemma for three base categories: the category of nominal sets and equivariant functions; the category of nominal sets and all finitely supported functions, introduced in this paper; and the category of FM sets and finitely supported functions. We make this exploration in ordinary, enriched and internal settings. We also show that the finite support of Yoneda natural transformations is a theorem for free.

We present a new method of proving the Diophantine extremality of various dynamically defined measures, vastly expanding the class of measures known to be extremal. This generalizes and improves the celebrated theorem of Kleinbock and Margulis [{\it Invent. Math.} {\bf 138}(3) (1999), 451--494] resolving Sprind\v zuk's conjecture, as well as its extension by Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss [On fractal measures and Diophantine approximation. {\it Selecta Math.} {\bf 10} (2004), 479--523], hereafter abbreviated KLW. As applications we prove the extremality of all hyperbolic measures of smooth dynamical systems with sufficiently large Hausdorff dimension, and of the Patterson--Sullivan measures of all nonplanar geometrically finite groups. The key technical idea, which has led to a plethora of new applications, is a significant weakening of KLW's sufficient conditions for extremality. In the first of this series of papers [{\it Selecta Math.} {\bf 24}(3) (2018), 2165--2206], we introduce and develop a systematic account of two classes of measures, which we call {\it quasi-decaying} and {\it weakly quasi-decaying}. We prove that weak quasi-decay implies strong extremality in the matrix approximation framework, as well as proving the ``inherited exponent of irrationality'' version of this theorem. In this paper, the second of the series, we establish sufficient conditions on various classes of conformal dynamical systems for their measures to be quasi-decaying. In particular, we prove the above-mentioned result about Patterson--Sullivan measures, and we show that equilibrium states (including conformal measures) of nonplanar infinite iterated function systems (including those which do not satisfy the open set condition) and rational functions are quasi-decaying., Comment: Link to Part I: arXiv:1504.04778

In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of deciding if a given finite algebraic structure satisfies a fixed (strong) Maltsev condition $\Sigma$. Our goal in this paper is to show that $\Sigma$-testing can be accomplished in polynomial time when the algebras tested are idempotent and the Maltsev condition $\Sigma$ can be described using paths. Examples of such path conditions are having a Maltsev term, having a majority operation, and having a chain of J\'onsson (or Gumm) terms of fixed length., Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures

The notion of quantized characters was introduced in our previous paper as a natural quantization of characters in the context of asymptotic representation theory forquantum groups. As in the case of ordinary groups, the representation associated with any extreme quantized character generates a von Neumann factor. From the viewpoint of operator algebras (and measurable dynamical systems), it is natural to ask what is the Murray–von Neumann–Connes type of the resulting factor. In this paper, we give a complete solution to this question when the inductive system is of quantum unitary groups $U_{q}(N)$.

In this paper, we extend the strong laws of large numbers and entropy ergodic theorem for partial sums for tree-indexed nonhomogeneous Markov chains fields to delayed versions of nonhomogeneous Markov chains fields indexed by a homogeneous tree. At first we study a generalized strong limit theorem for nonhomogeneous Markov chains indexed by a homogeneous tree. Then we prove the generalized strong laws of large numbers and the generalized asymptotic equipartition property for delayed sums of finite nonhomogeneous Markov chains indexed by a homogeneous tree. As corollaries, we can get the similar results of some current literatures. In this paper, the problem settings may not allow to use Doob's martingale convergence theorem, and we overcome this difficulty by using Borel–Cantelli Lemma so that our proof technique also has some new elements compared with the reference Yang and Ye (2007).

This paper completes the construction of $p$ -adic $L$ -functions for unitary groups. More precisely, in Harris, Li and Skinner [‘ $p$ -adic $L$ -functions for unitary Shimura varieties. I. Construction of the Eisenstein measure’, Doc. Math.Extra Vol. (2006), 393–464 (electronic)], three of the authors proposed an approach to constructing such $p$ -adic $L$ -functions (Part I). Building on more recent results, including the first named author’s construction of Eisenstein measures and $p$ -adic differential operators [Eischen, ‘A $p$ -adic Eisenstein measure for unitary groups’, J. Reine Angew. Math.699 (2015), 111–142; ‘ $p$ -adic differential operators on automorphic forms on unitary groups’, Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble)62(1) (2012), 177–243], Part II of the present paper provides the calculations of local $\unicode[STIX]{x1D701}$ -integrals occurring in the Euler product (including at $p$ ). Part III of the present paper develops the formalism needed to pair Eisenstein measures with Hida families in the setting of the doubling method.

Left restriction semigroups are the unary semigroups that abstractly characterize semigroups of partial maps on a set, where the unary operation associates to a map the identity element on its domain. This paper is the sequel to two recent papers by the author, melding the results of the first, on membership in the variety $\mathbf{B}$ of left restriction semigroups generated by Brandt semigroups and monoids, with the connection established in the second between subvarieties of the variety $\mathbf{B}_{R}$ of two-sided restriction semigroups similarly generated and varieties of categories, in the sense of Tilson. We show that the respective lattices ${\mathcal{L}}(\mathbf{B})$ and ${\mathcal{L}}(\mathbf{B}_{R})$ of subvarieties are almost isomorphic, in a very specific sense. With the exception of the members of the interval $[\mathbf{D},\mathbf{D}\vee \mathbf{M}]$, every subvariety of $\mathbf{B}$ is induced from a member of $\mathbf{B}_{R}$ and vice versa. Here $\mathbf{D}$ is generated by the three-element left restriction semigroup $D$ and $\mathbf{M}$ is the variety of monoids. The analogues hold for pseudovarieties.

The scope of the paper is twofold. We show that for a large class of measurable vector fields in the sense of Weaver (i.e. derivations over the algebra of Lipschitz functions), called in the paper laminated, the notion of integral curves may be naturally defined and characterized (when appropriate) by an ordinary differential equation. We further show that for such vector fields the notion of a flow of the given positive Borel measure similar to the classical one generated by a smooth vector field (in a space with smooth structure) may be defined in a reasonable way, so that the measure ‘flows along’ the appropriately understood integral curves of the given vector field and the classical continuity equation is satisfied in the weak sense.

This paper deals with the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ of a finite tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ with finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects over an algebraically closed field. The first part of this paper deals with the question of when the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$, or the Green algebra $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K over a field K, is Jacobson semisimple (namely, has zero Jacobson radical). It turns out that $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K is Jacobson semisimple if and only if the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is not zero in K. For the Green ring $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ itself, $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})$ is Jacobson semisimple if and only if the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is not zero. The second part of this paper focuses on the case where $\mathcal{C}=\text{Rep}(\mathbb {k}G)$ for a cyclic group G of order p over a field $\mathbb {k}$ of characteristic p. In this case, the Casimir number of $\mathcal{C}$ is computable and is shown to be 2p2. This leads to a complete description of the Jacobson radical of the Green algebra $\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{C})\otimes_{\mathbb {Z}}$K over any field K.

The action of any group on itself by conjugation and the corresponding conjugacy relation play an important role in group theory. There have been many attempts to find notions of conjugacy in semigroups that would be useful in special classes of semigroups occurring in various areas of mathematics, such as semigroups of matrices, operator and topological semigroups, free semigroups, transition monoids for automata, semigroups given by presentations with prescribed properties, monoids of graph endomorphisms, etc. In this paper we study four notions of conjugacy for semigroups, their interconnections, similarities and dissimilarities. They appeared originally in various different settings (automata, representation theory, presentations or transformation semigroups). Here we study them in maximum generality. Suppose that a countable group $G$ admits a cusp-uniform action on a hyperbolic space $(X,d)$ such that $G$ is of divergent type. The main result of the paper is characterizing the purely exponential growth type of the orbit growth function by a condition introduced by Dal'bo-Otal-Peign\'e. For geometrically finite Cartan-Hadamard manifolds with pinched negative curvature this condition ensures the finiteness of Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measures. In this case, our result recovers a theorem of Roblin (in a weaker form). Our main tool is the Patterson-Sullivan measures on the Gromov boundary of $X$, and a variant of the Sullivan shadow lemma called partial shadow lemma. This allows us to prove that the purely exponential growth of either cones, or partial cones or horoballs is also equivalent to the condition of Dal'bo-Otal-Peign\'e. We call such a pair $(w,j)$ a contact instanton. In this paper, we first prove a canonical neighborhood theorem of the locus $Q$ foliated by closed Reeb orbits of a Morse–Bott contact form. Then using a general framework of the three-interval method, we establish exponential decay estimates for contact instantons $(w,j)$ of the triad $(M,\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},J)$, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ a Morse–Bott contact form and $J$ a CR-almost complex structure adapted to $Q$, under the condition that the asymptotic charge of $(w,j)$ at the associated puncture vanishes.We also apply the three-interval method to the symplectization case and provide an alternative approach via tensorial calculations to exponential decay estimates in the Morse–Bott case for the pseudoholomorphic curves on the symplectization of contact manifolds. This was previously established by Bourgeois (A Morse–Bott approach to contact homology, Ph.D. dissertation, Stanford University, 2002) (resp. by Bao (On J-holomorphic curves in almost complex manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends, Pacific J. Math. 278(2) (2015), 291–324)), by using special coordinates, for the cylindrical (resp. for the asymptotically cylindrical) ends. The exponential decay result for the Morse–Bott case is an essential ingredient in the setup of the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves which plays a central role in contact homology and symplectic field theory (SFT).

We consider the question "Is every nonzero generic degree a density-1-bounding generic degree?" By previous results \cite{I2} either resolution of this question would answer an open question concerning the structure of the generic degrees: A positive result would prove that there are no minimal generic degrees, and a negative result would prove that there exist minimal pairs in the generic degrees. We consider several techniques for showing that the answer might be positive, and use those techniques to prove that a wide class of assumptions is sufficient to prove density-1-bounding. We also consider a historic difficulty in constructing a potential counterexample: By previous results \cite{I1} any generic degree that is not density-1-bounding must be quasiminimal, so in particular, any construction of a non-density-1-bounding generic degree must use a method that is able to construct a quasiminimal generic degree. However, all previously known examples of quasiminimal sets are also density-1, and so trivially density-1-bounding. We provide several examples of non-density-1 sets that are quasiminimal. Using cofinite and mod-finite reducibility, we extend our results to the uniform coarse degrees, and to the nonuniform generic degrees. We define all of the above terms, and we provide independent motivation for the study of each of them. Combined with a concurrently written paper of Hirschfeldt, Jockusch, Kuyper, and Schupp \cite{HJKS}, this paper provides a characterization of the level of randomness required to ensure quasiminimality in the uniform and nonuniform coarse and generic degrees., Submitted. In this paper we continue our earlier investigations on normal families of meromorphic functions\cite{CS2}. Here, we prove some value distribution results which lead to some normality criteria for a family of meromorphic functions involving the sharing of a holomorphic function by more general differential polynomials generated by members of the family and get some recently known results extended and improved. In particular, the main result of this paper leads to a counterexample to the converse of Bloch's principle.

Some classes of finitely generated hyperabelian groups defined in terms of semipermutability and S-semipermutability are studied in the paper. The classification of finitely generated hyperabelian groups all of whose finite quotients are PST-groups recently obtained by Robinson is behind our results. An alternative proof of such a classification is also included in the paper.

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the behaviour of uncountable groups of cardinality $\aleph$ in which all proper subgroups of cardinality $\aleph$ are nilpotent. It is proved that such a group $G$ is nilpotent, provided that $G$ has no infinite simple homomorphic images and either $\aleph$ has cofinality strictly larger than $\aleph _{0}$ or the generalized continuum hypothesis is assumed to hold. Furthermore, groups whose proper subgroups of large cardinality are soluble are studied in the last part of the paper.

Twisted commutative algebras (tca's) have played an important role in the nascent field of representation stability. Let A_d be the complex tca freely generated by d indeterminates of degree 1. In a previous paper, we determined the structure of the category of A_1-modules (which is equivalent to the category of FI-modules). In this paper, we establish analogous results for the category of A_d-modules, for any d. Modules over A_d are closely related to the structures used by the authors in previous works studying syzygies of Segre and Veronese embeddings, and we hope the results of this paper will eventually lead to improvements on those works. In this paper we demonstrate thatnon-commutative localizationsof arbitrary additive categories (generalizing those defined by Cohn in the setting of rings) are closely (and naturally) related to weight structures. Localizing an arbitrary triangulated category$\text{}\underline{C}$by a set$S$of morphisms in the heart$\text{}\underline{Hw}$of a weight structure$w$on it one obtains a triangulated category endowed with a weight structure$w^{\prime }$. The heart of$w^{\prime }$is a certain version of the Karoubi envelope of the non-commutative localization$\text{}\underline{Hw}[S^{-1}]_{\mathit{add}}$(of$\text{}\underline{Hw}$by$S$). The functor$\text{}\underline{Hw}\rightarrow \text{}\underline{Hw}[S^{-1}]_{\mathit{add}}$is the natural categorical version of Cohn’s localization of a ring, i.e., it is universal among additive functors that make all elements of$S$invertible. For any additive category$\text{}\underline{A}$, taking$\text{}\underline{C}=K^{b}(\text{}\underline{A})$we obtain a very efficient tool for computing$\text{}\underline{A}[S^{-1}]_{\mathit{add}}$; using it, we generalize the calculations of Gerasimov and Malcolmson (made for rings only). We also prove that$\text{}\underline{A}[S^{-1}]_{\mathit{add}}$coincides with the ‘abstract’ localization$\text{}\underline{A}[S^{-1}]$(as constructed by Gabriel and Zisman) if$S$contains all identity morphisms of$\text{}\underline{A}$and is closed with respect to direct sums. We apply our results to certain categories of birational motives$DM_{gm}^{o}(U)$(generalizing those defined by Kahn and Sujatha). We define$DM_{gm}^{o}(U)$for an arbitrary$U$as a certain localization of$K^{b}(Cor(U))$and obtain a weight structure for it. When$U$is the spectrum of a perfect field, the weight structure obtained this way is compatible with the corresponding Chow and Gersten weight structures defined by the first author in previous papers. For a general$U$the result is completely new. The existence of the correspondingadjacent$t$-structure is also a new result over a general base scheme; its heart is a certain category of birational sheaves with transfers over$U$.

In an earlier paper, Romanowska, Ślusarski and Smith described a duality between the category of polytopes (finitely generated real convex sets considered as barycentric algebras) and a certain category of intersections of hypercubes, considered as barycentric algebras with additional constant operations. The present paper provides an extension of this duality to a much more general class of so-called quasipolytopes, that is, convex sets with polytopes as closures. The dual spaces of quasipolytopes are Płonka sums of open polytopes, which are considered as barycentric algebras with some additional operations. In constructing this duality, we use several known and new dualities: the Hofmann–Mislove–Stralka duality for semilattices; the Romanowska–Ślusarski–Smith duality for polytopes; a new duality for open polytopes; and a new duality for injective Płonka sums of polytopes.

In this paper we use tools from differential topology to give a geometric description of cohomology for Hilbert manifolds. Our model is Quillen’s geometric description of cobordism groups for finite-dimensional smooth manifolds [Quillen, ‘Elementary proofs of some results of cobordism theory using steenrod operations’, Adv. Math., 7 (1971)]. Quillen stresses the fact that this construction allows the definition of Gysin maps for ‘oriented’ proper maps. For finite-dimensional manifolds one has a Gysin map in singular cohomology which is based on Poincaré duality, hence it is not clear how to extend it to infinite-dimensional manifolds. But perhaps one can overcome this difficulty by giving a Quillen type description of singular cohomology for Hilbert manifolds. This is what we do in this paper. Besides constructing a general Gysin map, one of our motivations was a geometric construction of equivariant cohomology, which even for a point is the cohomology of the infinite-dimensional space $BG$, which has a Hilbert manifold model. Besides that, we demonstrate the use of such a geometric description of cohomology by several other applications. We give a quick description of characteristic classes of a finite-dimensional vector bundle and apply it to a generalized Steenrod representation problem for Hilbert manifolds and define a notion of a degree of proper oriented Fredholm maps of index $0$.

This paper deals with the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs of type II over a non Archimedean field $F$ of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. First we construct and study the geometric version of the invariants of the Weil representation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the particular case of $(GL_1, GL_m)$ we give a complete geometric description of the corresponding category. The second part of the paper deals with geometric local Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level in a general setting. Given two reductive connected groups $G$, $H$ over $F$ and a morphism $\check{G}\times \mathrm{SL}_2\to\check{H}$ of Langlands dual groups, we construct a bimodule over the affine extended Hecke algebras of $H$ and $G$ that should realize the geometric local Arthur-Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level. Then, we propose a conjecture describing the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level constructed in the first part in terms of this bimodule and we prove our conjecture for pairs $(GL_1, GL_m)$., Comment: To appear in the Journal of the Institute of Mathematics of Jussieu

In this paper, we provide a concrete interpretation of equivariant Reidemeister torsion, and demonstrate that Bismut–Zhang’s equivariant Cheeger–Müller theorem simplifies considerably when applied to locally symmetric spaces. In a companion paper, this allows us to extend recent results on torsion cohomology growth and torsion cohomology comparison for arithmetic locally symmetric spaces to an equivariant setting.

Tent spaces of vector-valued functions were recently studied by Hytönen, van Neerven and Portal with an eye on applications to $H^{\infty }$-functional calculi. This paper extends their results to the endpoint cases $p=1$ and $p=\infty $ along the lines of earlier work by Harboure, Torrea and Viviani in the scalar-valued case. The main result of the paper is an atomic decomposition in the case $p=1$, which relies on a new geometric argument for cones. A result on the duality of these spaces is also given.

International audience; The weak KAM theory was developed by Fathi in order to study the dynamics of convex Hamiltonian systems. It somehow makes a bridge between viscosity solutions of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation and Mather invariant sets of Hamiltonian systems, although this was fully understood only a posteriori. These theories converge under the hypothesis of convexity, and the richness of applications mostly comes from this remarkable convergence. In this paper, we provide an elementary exposition of some of the basic concepts of weak KAM theory. In a companion paper, Albert Fathi exposed the aspects of his theory which are more directly related to viscosity solutions. Here, on the contrary, we focus on dynamical applications, even if we also discuss some viscosity aspects to underline the connections with Fathi's lecture. The fundamental reference on weak KAM theory is the still unpublished book Weak KAM theorem in Lagrangian dynamics by Albert Fathi. Although we do not offer new results, our exposition is original in several aspects. We only work with the Hamiltonian and do not rely on the Lagrangian, even if some proofs are directly inspired by the classical Lagrangian proofs. This approach is made easier by the choice of a somewhat specific setting. We work on R d and make uniform hypotheses on the Hamiltonian. This allows us to replace some compactness arguments by explicit estimates. For the most interesting dynamical applications, however, the compactness of the configuration space remains a useful hypothesis and we retrieve it by considering periodic (in space) Hamiltonians. Our exposition is centred on the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton–Jacobi equation and the Lax–Oleinik evolution operators associated to it. Dynamical applications are reached by considering fixed points of these evolution operators, the weak KAM solutions. The evolution operators can also be used for their regularizing properties; this opens an alternative route to dynamical applications. 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a complete description of the primitive ideal space of the C*-algebra [R] associated to the ring of integers R in a number field K in the recent paper [5]. As explained in [5], [R] can be realized as the Toeplitz C*-algebra of the affine semigroup R ⋊ R× over R and as a full corner of a crossed product C0() ⋊ K ⋊ K*, where is a certain adelic space. Therefore Prim([R]) is homeomorphic to the primitive ideal space of this crossed product. Using a recent result of Sierakowski together with the fact that every quasi-orbit for the action of K ⋊ K* on contains at least one point with trivial stabilizer we show that Prim([R]) is homeomorphic to the quasi-orbit space for the action of K ⋊ K* on , which in turn may be identified with the power set of the set of prime ideals of R equipped with the power-cofinite topology.

In the paper ‘Bruhat–Tits theory from Berkovich's point of view. I. Realizations and compactifications of buildings’, we investigated various realizations of the Bruhat–Tits building $\mathcal{B}(\mathrm{G},k)$ of a connected and reductive linear algebraic group G over a non-Archimedean field k in the framework of Berkovich's non-Archimedean analytic geometry. We studied in detail the compactifications of the building which naturally arise from this point of view. In the present paper, we give a representation theoretic flavour to these compactifications, following Satake's original constructions for Riemannian symmetric spaces.We first prove that Berkovich compactifications of a building coincide with the compactifications, previously introduced by the third named author and obtained by a gluing procedure. Then we show how to recover them from an absolutely irreducible linear representation of G by embedding $\mathcal{B}(\mathrm{G},k)$ in the building of the general linear group of the representation space, compactified in a suitable way. Existence of such an embedding is a special case of Landvogt's general results on functoriality of buildings, but we also give another natural construction of an equivariant embedding, which relies decisively on Berkovich geometry.

In this paper, the componentwise increasing convex order, the upper orthant order, the upper orthant convex order, and the increasing directionally convex order for random vectors are generalized to hierarchical classes of integral stochastic order relations. The elements of the generating classes of functions possess nonnegative partial derivatives up to some given degrees. Some properties of these new stochastic order relations are studied. Particular attention is paid to the comparison of weighted sums of the respective components of ordered random vectors. By providing a unified derivation of standard multivariate stochastic orderings, the present paper shows how some well-known results derive from a common principle.

In this paper, we give a characterization of the simultaneous unitarizability of any finite set of SL(2, ℂ)-valued functions on and determine all possible ways of the unitarization. Such matrix functions can be regarded as images of the generators for the fundamental group of a surface in an -family, and the results of this paper have applications in the construction of constant mean curvature surfaces in space.

An algebraic group of type E7 over an algebraically closed field has an irreducible representation in a vector space of dimension 56 and is, in fact, the identity component of the automorphism group of a quartic form on the space. This paper describes the construction of the quartic form if the characteristic is ≠ 2, 3, taking into account a field of definition F. Certain F-forms of E7 appear in the automorphism groups of quartic forms over F, as well as forms of E6. Many of the results of the paper are known, but are perhaps not easily accessible in the literature.

This thesis consists of four papers.In paper 1, we prove central limit theorems for Markov chains under (local) contraction conditions. As a corollary we obtain a central limit theorem for Markov chains associated with iterated function systems with contractive maps and place-dependent Dini-continuous probabilities.In paper 2, properties of inverse subordinators are investigated, in particular similarities with renewal processes. The main tool is a theorem on processes that are both renewal and Cox processes.In paper 3, distributional properties of supercritical and especially immortal branching processes are derived. The marginal distributions of immortal branching processes are found to be compound geometric.In paper 4, a description of a dynamic population model is presented, such that samples from the population have genealogies as given by a Lambda-coalescent with mutations. Depending on whether the sample is grouped according to litters or families, the sampling distribution is either regenerative or non-regenerative.

In this paper, we describe a class of Wiener functionals that are ‘indeterminate by their moments’, that is, whose distributions are not uniquely determined by their moments. In particular, it is proved that the integral of a geometric Brownian motion is indeterminate by its moments and, moreover, shown that previous proofs of this result are incorrect. The main result of this paper is based on geometric inequalities in Gauss space and on a generalization of the Krein criterion due to H. L. Pedersen.

Let Mn be an immersed umbilic-free hypersurface in the (n + 1)-dimensional unit sphere n+1, then Mn is associated with a so-called Möbius metric g, a Möbius second fundamental form B and a Möbius form Φ which are invariants of Mn under the Möbius transformation group of n+1. A classical theorem of Möbius geometry states that Mn (n ≥ 3) is in fact characterized by g and B up to Möbius equivalence. A Möbius isoparametric hypersurface is defined by satisfying two conditions: (1) Φ ≡ 0; (2) All the eigenvalues of B with respect to g are constants. Note that Euclidean isoparametric hyper-surfaces are automatically Möbius isoparametric, whereas the latter are Dupin hypersurfaces.In this paper, we prove that a Möbius isoparametric hypersurface in 4 is either of parallel Möbius second fundamental form or Möbius equivalent to a tube of constant radius over a standard Veronese embedding of ℝP2 into 4. The classification of hypersurfaces in n+1 (n ≥ 2) with parallel Möbius second fundamental form has been accomplished in our previous paper [6]. The present result is a counterpart of Pinkall’s classification for Dupin hypersurfaces in 4 up to Lie equivalence.

Let (G, ρ, X) be a prehomogeneous vector space with singular set S over an algebraic number field F. The main result of this paper is a proof for the convergence of the zeta fucntions Z(Φ, s) associated with (G, ρ, X) for large Re s under the assumption that S is a hypersurface. This condition is satisfied if G is reductive and (G, ρ, X) is regular. When the connected component of the stabilizer of a generic point x is semisimple and the group Πx of connected components of Gx is abelian, a clear estimate of the domain of convergence is given.Moreover when S is a hypersurface and the Hasse principle holds for G, it is shown that the zeta fucntions are sums of (usually infinite) Euler products, the local components of which are orbital local zeta functions. This result has been proved in a previous paper by the author under the more restrictive condition that (G, ρ, X) is irreducible, regular, and reduced, and the zeta function is absolutely convergent.

This paper is concerned with a finitely generated module M over a (commutative Noetherian) local ring R. In the case when R is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring, one can use the well-known associativity formula for multiplicities, together with local duality and Matlis duality, to produce analogous associativity formulae for the local cohomology modules of M with respect to the maximal ideal. The main purpose of this paper is to show that these formulae also hold in the case when R is universally catenary and such that all its formal fibres are Cohen–Macaulay.These formulae involve certain subsets of the spectrum of R called the pseudosupports of M; these pseudo-supports are closed in the Zariski topology when R is universally catenary and has the property that all its formal fibres are Cohen–Macaulay. However, examples are provided to show that, in general, these pseudo-supports need not be closed. We are able to conclude that the above-mentioned associativity formulae for local cohomology modules do not hold over all local rings.

We set out some general criteria to prove the K-property, refining the assumptions used in an earlier paper for the flow case, and introducing the analogous discrete-time result. We also introduce one-sided $\lambda $ -decompositions, as well as multiple techniques for checking the pressure gap required to show the K-property. We apply our results to the family of Mañé diffeomorphisms and the Katok map. Our argument builds on the orbit decomposition theory of Climenhaga and Thompson.

This paper focuses on the analyticity of the limiting behavior of a class of dynamical systems defined by iteration of non-expansive random operators. The analyticity is understood with respect to the parameters which govern the law of the operators. The proofs are based on contraction with respect to certain projective semi-norms. Several examples are considered, including Lyapunov exponents associated with products of random matrices both in the conventional algebra, and in the (max, +) semi-field, and Lyapunov exponents associated with non-linear dynamical systems arising in stochastic control. For the class of reducible operators (defined in the paper), we also address the issue of analyticity of the expectation of functionals of the limiting behavior, and connect this with contraction properties with respect to the supremum norm. We give several applications to queueing theory.

A gap mapping is a discontinuous interval mapping with two strictly increasing branches that have a gap between their ranges. They are one-dimensional dynamical systems, which arise in the study of certain higher dimensional flows, for example the Lorenz flow and the Cherry flow. In this paper, we prove hyperbolicity of renormalization acting on $C^3$ dissipative gap mappings, and show that the topological conjugacy classes of infinitely renormalizable gap mappings are $C^1$ manifolds.

In this paper we prove a local exponential synchronization for Markovian random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ , providing a new result on stochastic circle dynamics even for $C^1$ -diffeomorphisms. This result is obtained by combining an invariance principle for stationary random iterations of homeomorphisms of the circle with a Krylov–Bogolyubov-type result for homogeneous Markov chains.

It is proved that every holomorphically convex complex space endowed with an action of a compact Lie group K can be realized as an open K-stable subspace of a holomorphically convex space endowed with a holomorphic action of the complexified group K . Similar results are obtained for holomorphic if-bundles over such spaces. Let G be a real Lie group which acts by holomorphic transformations on a (reduced) complex space X. Suppose that the Lie algebra of the complexification G c of G (see [Ho, p. 204]) is the complexification of the Lie algebra of G. This holds for example in the case where G is simply connected. Then, by integrating the holomorphic vector fields given by the G-action, the complexification G c acts locally and holomorphically on X (see [K]). Adapting the terminology of Palais (see [P]), we say that a complex space X* which contains X as an open subset is a globalization of the complex G-space X whenever the local G-action on X extends to a global holomorphic action on X* and G c X = X*. This paper is concerned with the study of death processes with time-homogeneous non-linear death rates. An explicit formula is obtained for the joint distribution of the state XT and the variable ∫ T 0 g(Xt ), where g is any given real function and T corresponds to some appropriate stopping time. This is achieved by constructing a family of martingales and then by using a particular family of Abel–Gontcharoff pseudopolynomials (the theory of which has been introduced in a companion paper) and related Abelian-type expansions. Moreover, the distribution of the first crossing level of such a death process through a general upper boundary is also evaluated in terms of pseudopolynomials of that kind. The flexibility of the methods developed makes easy the extension to multidimensional death processes.

In this paper we obtain some improved $L^p$ -Hardy and $L^p$ -Rellich inequalities on bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds. For Cartan–Hadamard manifolds we prove the inequalities with sharp constants and with weights being hyperbolic functions of the Riemannian distance.

In the first part of the paper, we use states on $C^{*}$-algebras in order to establish some equivalent statements to equality in the triangle inequality, as well as to the parallelogram identity for elements of a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. We also characterize the equality case in the triangle inequality for adjointable operators on a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module. Then we give certain necessary and sufficient conditions to the Pythagoras identity for two vectors in a pre-Hilbert $C^{*}$-module under the assumption that their inner product has a negative real part. We introduce the concept of Pythagoras orthogonality and discuss its properties. We describe this notion for Hilbert space operators in terms of the parallelogram law and some limit conditions. We present several examples in order to illustrate the relationship between the Birkhoff–James, Roberts, and Pythagoras orthogonalities, and the usual orthogonality in the framework of Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules.

We study the behavior of representation varieties of quivers with relations under the operation of node splitting. We show how splitting a node gives a correspondence between certain closed subvarieties of representation varieties for different algebras, which preserves properties like normality or having rational singularities. Furthermore, we describe how the defining equations of such closed subvarieties change under the correspondence. By working in the "relative setting" (splitting one node at a time), we demonstrate that there are many non-hereditary algebras whose irreducible components of representation varieties are all normal with rational singularities. We also obtain explicit generators of the prime defining ideals of these irreducible components. This class contains all radical square zero algebras, but also many others, as illustrated by examples throughout the paper. We also show the above is true when replacing irreducible components by orbit closures, for a more restrictive class of algebras.
