This study investigates the use of similarities in the form of analogy, metaphor, and simile by students and reviewers in an undergraduate architectural design review. In contrast to studies conducted i n vitro settings, this study emphasizes the importance of studying analogies, metaphors, and similes in a natural setting. All similarity relationships were coded according to their type, the level of expertise, range, frequency, goal, value judgment, and depth. The results indicate that analogies, metaphors, and similes were used spontaneously and without any difficulty by both reviewers and students. Reviewers, however, were almost twice as likely to evoke similarities. Metaphor was the most frequently used similarity relationship among the three. It was found that there was a significant relationship between the level of expertise and type of similarity, with students more likely to use analogies and less likely to use similes. It was also found that goal is the most important factor, with a significant relation to all other variables, and that embodiment is often invoked in both students' and reviewers' metaphors. This paper explores the strange fascination with smallness that runs through Vergil's Aeneid, focusing on the bee simile in book 1, the poem's inaugural miniaturizing moment. Deviating from the standard paradigms of Vergilian criticism, I suggest we can learn a great deal about smallness in this poem by studying it through the lens of the sublime. My analysis bypasses the proliferation of Romantic sublimes to draw primarily on a model of sublimity derived from Neff Hertz's influential reading of Longinus. Read through the Hertzian sublime, miniaturization in the Aeneid is revealed as a subtle articulation of the poem's running concern with power. The bee simile, I argue, enacts a threefold drama in which hero, author, and reader confront what I call their sublime condition, coming to terms with their implication in immensities beyond their comprehension and control. The article comments on the implied vengeance in the simile of grieving vultures in the poem "The Odyssey." The meaning of the curious simile of the grieving vultures becomes manifest after the reconstruction of the conventional association between birds and divinely ordained vengeance. The acts of vengeance or its prelude are mention in the last four of the poem's nine bird similes.

The article examines the use of the image of the grieving lion in literature, in "Iliad" and specifically to portray Achilles' sense of loss and anticipates the image later used of Achilles at Patroclus' funeral of a father grieving as he burns the bones of his newly married son. This article presents information related to the literary work De mundo. In the theological section of "De mundo," the author has argued that the supreme deity rules the world and keeps it together. He compares its function to that of the keystones in a vault which 'lie in the middle' and so ensure the stability of the whole structure. Another illustration is given in which there is the use of similes. What these similes have in common is their emphasis on something in the centre; in fact, the author emphasizes that the deity, unlike the self-portrait of Pheidias on the shield, is not literally in the centre of the universe.

This article focuses on the works of Lucan. Castris is usually interpreted either as campaigns (Haskins, Duff) or as legions. Getty objects that no good parallel is cited for castra a year's campaign, and suggests that castra may be used as a metonymy for legiones. His appeal to metonymy seems far-fetched and the precise number of Caesar's legions irrelevant. I would explain rather that the reader, having twice been reminded of the details. Taken as genitive, however, populi becomes a useless appendage to sanguine ab I., which is complete in itself, and the neat and characteristic framing of the words ausi....Iliaco by the adjective Aruerni and its noun populi is thereby destroyed.

This article presents information related to bee imagery in Plutarch. There can be few Greek prose authors who outdo Plutarch in fondness for elaborate similes and a determination to sustain at length vocabulary appropriate to both objects of comparison within the simile, once it is embarked upon. In the essay an image is used in which a young man aspiring to be educated in quality literature is recommended to follow the example of the bee, which extracts material for its honey from the most pungent plants.
