The article presents the author’s views in support of transpersonal psychology. It states that any kind of treatment must acknowledge and nurture the soul of the patient, as the soul is a very important part of a being. The article presents information on three different levels of therapy. In recent years, John Rowan has been applying the ideas of Ken Wilber to the study of therapy (the term I use to cover psychotherapy, counselling psychology, counselling and personal growth) and found him a very interesting guide. Recently in CPJ there has been a lot of agonising about evidence-based therapy. The key thing is that there should be an aim. The authentic self is described by these same authors as self-actualisation (Maslow) 9, post-conventional moral positions (Kohlberg) 10, true personal conscience (Gilligan) 11, autonomous and integrated ego development (Loevinger) 12, authentic consciousness (Wade) 6, constructed knowing (Belenky) 13 and the Centaur stage (Wilber) 3.

Most men, even male therapists, have a lot to learn before they can mix with women on a non-oppressive basis in psychotherapy and the wider world. Counsellors tend to be nice people, who hope to be counselling human beings, and who hope to be human beings themselves. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a human beings. Instead of taking men for granted, as representing the whole human race, people have to think of them as a minority group with particular characteristics. These characteristics are partly genetic, partly social and partly created within the psyche of each individual man. Here, the reaction to the feminist insight is to say that certain roles and attitudes are natural, hard-wired. According to moral conservatives, masculinity is created by society in order to override man's natural antisocial tendencies, and turn them into fathers, protectors and providers.

The article focuses on the problems faced by the author as a therapist with his clients. Topics include the significance of feelings in a relationship, the mindset of man and woman regarding relationships, and provides information on his book "Ordinary Ecstasy, Healing the Male Psyche and Subpersonalitie.

The article explores the applications of internal multiplicity in counselling and psychotherapy. William Stiles developed what he calls assimilation theory, which has produced a research program to explore the idea of listening to the different voices which emerge during therapy. A team of practitioners has developed some fascinating ideas using personification to bring to life some important fictitious characters. Research has suggested that there are only 18 basic early maladaptive schemas, and only three modes of dealing with each.
