This project highlights Jesus'use of scripture within each Synoptic Gospel as an important component of each Gospel's narrative rhetoric. Using literary analysis—particularly composition criticism, narrative criticism, and comparative analysis—the main object of study is the explicit citation of Jesus, rather than any implied citation, allusion or echo. Concentration on the latter areas offers insight into the way scripture was understood by Christians and Jews in Second Temple Judaism, however, the study of explicit citations provides the basis upon which we assume other allusions may be heard by first century audiences. The study concludes that each Gospel offers its own distinctive portrayal of Jesus'use of scripture based on each one's narrative rhetoric.

The baptism with the Spirit and fire has been a major area of study by theologians and has been pursued by the historical church seeking God's holiness and power; yet its relationship to judgment has often been ignored. This book explores the Holy Spirit's relationship with judgment in Luke-Acts through seven texts: Luke 3:16–17; 12:8–10; Acts 5:1–11; 7:51; 8:18–23; 13:9–11; 28:25–28. In these texts, the Holy Spirit is connected with fire, unforgiveness, deception, resistance, greed, blindness, or condemnation. In each instance, Luke's presentation is examined to determine the Spirit's role in the process of judgment. Through the Spirit, Jesus judges, cleanses, purges, and divides his people from the world. Luke portrays the Spirit as the executive power of Jesus'reign as judge, exposing, opposing, and condemning those who reject the gospel.

This book focuses on the third section of one of the most important documents from the Qumran library, the epilogue of 4QMMT. It re-evaluates the textual basis for this section, and analyses how the epilogue functions as a part of the larger document. In addition to addressing the structure and genre of 4QMMT, this volume analyzes the use of Scripture in the epilogue in order to illuminate the theological agenda of the document's author/redactor. Although this book's primary focus is on the epilogue, the results of this investigation shed light on 4QMMT as a whole.

This book offers the first large-scale investigation into the attitude of the historical Jesus towards covenant belief, the dominant theme of the Judaism of Jesus'day.The book, intended as part one of a two-volume investigation, takes its point of departure in a simple question which nevertheless integrally reflects the covenant thinking of the time: Was Jesus engaged in trying to find out how to remain faithful to the covenant?Current scholarship underlines both the importance of the covenant belief for early Judaism and the need for considering Jesus as being within Judaism. Studying how Jesus viewed the covenant leads right to the heart of the matter, both illuminating his relation to Judaism and providing a significant, still unexamined vantage point for his proclamation.
