This volume contains a collection of 11 studies on the philosophical and scientific background of Lucretius'De rerum natura. The studies 1-7 form a running commentary on the history of ideas in Drn. 5.780-1160 (Lucretius'famous description of the History of Human Mankind); 8-10 discuss some topics from book 4 (sleep, dreams, optical illusions) in relationship to other philosophical doctrines and ancient medical thought; the last study (11) treats the use of analogy by Lucretius.

The book is comprised of essays that utilize Shakespeare as a productive window into topics of contemporary social and political relevance. Its interdisciplinary qualities make the book relevant for students of political studies, literature, philosophy, cultural studies, and history.

This book explores both this intrinsic literary value of the crime novel and its extrinsic witness to historical events and cultural trends, arguing that these apparently distinct aspects are in fact dynamic, interrelated parts of the same whole. This blend of cultural history with literary analysis allows for the discussion of themes such as politics, memory, the urban environment and youth cultures, mixed with case studies of major French crime writers, including Gaston Leroux, Georges Simenon, Jean-Patrick Manchette, Daniel Pennac and Fred Vargas.

Social Transformations in Chinese Societies is the official annual of The Hong Kong Sociological Association. It publishes articles of original research that addresses theoretical, methodological, or substantive issues of sociological significance about or related to social transformations in Chinese societies. The Renewal of Epic considers various modes of allusion to Homer in the Argonautica of Apollonius, dealing not only with similarities in phraseology but also with thematic and structural resemblances.After an introduction, two chapters discuss Apollonian techniques in treating repeated Homeric scenes: sacrifice, shipwreck, boxing and battle. The central section of the work considers the multiple links between the adventures of the Argonauts and Odysseus'wanderings. A final chapter explores Apollonius'innovative treatment of the divine, both generally and in particular scenes.The work shows convincingly that the Argonautica reproduces many of the patterns which have been found in the Iliad and Odyssey. It demonstrates the presence of allusion at every level in the poem, linking it to its predecesors and acting as an essential interpretative aid to the reader.

This volume is the first complete critical edition of the Greek medical work of the 1st century A.D. on acute and chronic diseases, by an anonymous writer commonly known as Anonymus Parisinus Darembergii sive Fuchsii.The work includes an introduction, a critical text with apparatus and an English translation accompanied by a commentary on textual, linguistic and factual problems. There is an index of Greek words and an index of drugs and foods.This edition is important both because it is the first complete edition (the former, by Fuchs, being confined to the first half of the work), and because it is based on all four manuscripts that preserve the work (Fuchs employed two of them).
