After six years in development, New York City-based MechoShade Systems Inc., has launched the EcoVeil solar shade cloth, created with assistance from the sustainable-product development firm MBDC. Incorporating a new material constructed with a thermoplastic olefin-based yarn called EarthTex, EcoVeil can be recycled into new shade cloth as well as other EarthTex-based products, a process made easier once MechoShade implements a planned "take back" program for the shades. EcoVeil's coating, is essentially the same polymer as the core yam, which allows it to be melted down, reprocessed, and made into new product. Traditionally, solar shade cloths are hybrids of a PVC jacket and fiberglass or polyester core yams, which are combined into an unusable "muddy hybrid" that cannot be separated for reuse.
