The nuclear DNA content of 26 non-endemic Burkitt's lymphomas was studied by flow cytometry. Eighteen of the tumours showed a pattern characteristic for diploid chromosome distribution, while eight of the tumours were aneuploid. Six of the aneuploid tumours showed an almost diploid, aneuploid DNA index, while two were tetraploid tumours. Patients with aneuploid tumours had a significantly worse prognosis (p less than 0.005) than those with diploid tumours. One of the aneuploid tumours was positive for Epstein-Barr virus DNA.

An enzyme immunoassay was used to determine IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies to gonococcal pili in 68 patients with uncomplicated gonorrhoea, 35 women with pelvic inflammatory disease, and in 115 normal controls. A clear difference in response rate in all three antibody classes between patients with gonorrhoea and healthy controls was evident. Among women with gonorrhoea, the magnitude of antibody response was higher than among men with gonorrhoea, especially in the IgM class. No major differences were found in the overall distribution of serological findings between women with uncomplicated gonorrhoea and those with gonococcal pelvic inflammatory disease. Among this last group, however, high IgM antibody levels in acute phase sera were significantly associated with the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the upper genital tract.

Endometrial biopsies were obtained from 32 women with suspected pelvic inflammatory disease, of whom 23 (72%) had histopathological evidence of endometritis. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the endometria of nine (39%) women (chlamydia group) but not from the other 14 (non-chlamydia group). Severe plasma cell endometritis and lymphoid follicles with transformed lymphocytes were significantly more common in the chlamydia group than in the non-chlamydia group. This suggests that C trachomatis is an invasive endometrial pathogen which often causes severe inflammation. The association was independent of predisposing factors such as use of intrauterine contraceptive devices.

The quantity of nuclear DNA in 90 tumours with a strong probability of being associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (11 cases with nasopharyngeal carcinomas, seven cases of endemic and 26 of non-endemic Burkitt's lymphoma, and 46 cases of Hodgkin's disease) were analysed by flow cytometry. Twenty three cases with benign lymphadenopathies were analysed in a similar way. Except for endemic Burkitt's lymphoma most of the tumours were diploid. Near-diploid aneuploidy (with a DNA index ranging from 1.06 to 1.26) was also found in endemic Burkitt's lymphoma as well as in six non-endemic Burkitt's lymphomas and in eight cases of Hodgkin's disease but was absent in nasopharyngeal carcinomas. Tetraploid aneuploidy was seen in three cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Five of the 23 cases of lymphadenopathy also showed near-diploid DNA, one of which subsequently developed into a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is concluded that near-diploid DNA content seems to be associated with the lymphatic origins of the tumours rather than with EBV.
