A multidisciplinary approach to microbiological implications of indoor air is fruitful for research as well as management of health and building problems. The Finnish and the Danish mold programs are examples of such productive collaborative studies. Dust samples taken from classrooms in schools where occupants complain of building-related symptoms (BRS) demonstrated an inflammatory potential in vitro, measured as a release of cytokine interleukin (IL)-8. An increase of the metabolite NO and liberation of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and other cytokines during exposure were obtained in vivo, was presented based on these programs and on epidemiological studies on residential fungal contamination and health conducted in Canada and The Netherlands. New methods for assessing fungal exposure are PCA analysis for the toxigenic mold Stachybotrys chartarum and EPS-Asp/Pen for detecting of Aspergillus and Penicillium in dust. Based on a limited data set it is shown that emission rates of fungal spores are inversely proportional to relative humidity (RH), directly related to flow rate and to surface loading. Poor maintenance, risk constructions and risk materials are described in several studies as the main causes of water damage in buildings.

Heritage guidelines recognize odors as a value associated with a place. This study aims to clarify the connection between heritage and volatile organic compounds at the molecular level. At variance with previous studies, usually focused only on book-related compounds from accelerated degradation tests, the whole air of one of the most significant historical libraries in Italy was studied. A sampling of the volatiles off-gassing from the two most iconic rooms, respectively open and forbidden to visitors, was performed via a non-invasive, nondestructive green method, solid-phase-micro-extraction. The gas-chromatographic analyses resulted in the appraisal of olfactory contributions from books, storage environment, and, for the first time, anthropic activities and pollution.Concerning the paper decay process, for the very first time, the presence of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol in the chromatographic signature of the library air is rationalized according to the Guerbet reaction. The presence of all other compounds is explained by the paper decay process, anthropic sources, and pollution. Indoor air comprises analytes related to paper decay, identified by previous studies, and additional compounds never found before.Most volatile compounds are aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, terpenes, and terpenoids. Odor contributions from a selected number of analytes were pinpointed. Alkanes dominate the volatiles chromatographic signature, and impart a slight hydrocarbon smell. Aromatics supplement their characteristic aromatic odor. Aldehydes' very low odor threshold makes them strongly contribute to both fruity and fatty descriptors. Benzaldehyde, furfural, vanillin, and camphor add, respectively, an hint of almond, bread, vanilla, and camphor. Alcohols such as 2-ethyl hexanol have a floral scent. Indoor PM 2.5 in apartments must be effectively managed to minimize adverse impacts on human health. Cooking is the one of the main PM 2.5 sources in apartments, and indoor air quality (IAQ) management methods (natural ventilation, mechanical ventilations, range hoods, and air purifiers) are typically used to reduce PM 2.5 generated during cooking. For effective control of indoor PM 2.5 , prediction of PM 2.5 reduction for various IAQ management methods is necessary. This study carefully predicted indoor PM 2.5 concentrations in an apartment when IAQ management methods were applied separately and/or in combination during cooking. The infiltration and exfiltration were verified by comparing the experimental results of CO 2 concentration with those predicted with or without mechanical ventilation. The deposition rate for PM 2.5 generated by cooking was also derived by comparing the experimental PM 2.5 changes with the predicted values for PM 2.5 natural decay. Through this method, effective PM 2.5 control ways during cooking in apartments can be proposed, such as natural ventilation with a range hood for 30 min and then the operation of an air purifier for 30 min. Additionally, if this prediction is combined with energy consumption, it will be possible to propose the most energy-efficient indoor PM 2.5 control methods for various seasons and outdoor conditions., (© 2022 The Authors. The indoor environment has a significant impact on our wellbeing. Accurate prediction of the indoor air distribution can help to create a good indoor environment. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are commonly used for indoor airflow prediction. However, the Boussinesq hypothesis used in the RANS model fails to account for indoor anisotropic flows. To solve this problem, this study developed a data-driven RANS model by using a nonlinear model from the literature. An artificial neural network (ANN) was used to determine the coefficients of high-order terms. Three typical indoor airflows were selected as the training set to develop the model. Four other cases were used as testing sets to verify the generalizability of the model. The results show that the data-driven model can better predict the distributions of air velocity, temperature, and turbulent kinetic energy for the indoor anisotropic flows than the original RANS model. This is because the nonlinear terms are accurately simulated by the ANN. We explored the importance of inhaled air temperature on thermal comfort, perceived air quality, acute non-clinical health symptoms, and physiological responses. Sixteen subjects stayed in a stainless-steel chamber for 90 min. They experienced four conditions with two inhaled air temperatures of 22 and 30°C and two ambient temperatures of 22 and 30°C in a 2 × 2 design. They wore breathing masks covering their mouth and nose to control the inhaled air temperature; the air was provided from an adjacent twin stainless-steel chamber. The subjects evaluated thermal conditions and health symptoms on visual-analogue scales. Skin temperature and electrocardiography were recorded. Whole-body thermal sensation and skin temperature did not change when the temperature of inhaled air was changed. Perceived air quality was significantly improved when subjects sat in the chamber at 30°C and inhaled air with a temperature of 22°C; under these conditions lip and throat dryness were significantly reduced. The lower inhaled air temperature increased time-domain heart rate variability indicators and decreased heart rate and the LF/HF ratio, suggesting that the parasympathetic nervous system was activated and the sympathetic nervous system was suppressed., (© 2022 The Authors. To date, although many studies had focused on the impact of environmental factors on sleep, how to choose the proper assessment method for objective sleep quality was often ignored, especially for healthy subjects in bedroom environment. In order to provide methodological guidance for future research, this paper reviewed the assessments of objective sleep quality applied in environmental researches, compared them from the perspective of accuracy and interference, and statistically analyzed the impact of experimental type and subjects' information on method selection. The review results showed that, in contrast to polysomnography (PSG), the accuracy of actigraphy (ACT), respiratory monitoring-oxygen saturation monitoring (RM-OSM), and electrocardiograph (ECG) could reach up to 97%, 80.38%, and 79.95%, respectively. In terms of sleep staging, PSG and ECG performed the best, ACT the second, and RM-OSM the worst; as compared to single methods, mix methods were more accurate and better at sleep staging. PSG interfered with sleep a great deal, while ECG and ACT could be non-contact, and thus, the least interference with sleep was present. The type of experiment significantly influenced the choice of assessment method (p < 0.001), 85.3% of researchers chose PSG in laboratory study while 82.5% ACT in field study; moreover, PSG was often used in a relatively small number of young subjects, while ACT had a wide applicable population. In general, researchers need to pay more attention at selection of assessments in future studies, and this review can be used as a reliable reference for experimental design., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons A/S. From the thermodynamic perspective, the term temperature is clearly defined for ideal physical systems: A unique temperature can be assigned to each black body via its radiation spectrum, and the temperature of an ideal gas is given by the velocity distribution of the molecules. While the indoor environment is not an ideal system, fundamental physical and chemical processes, such as diffusion, partitioning equilibria, and chemical reactions, are predictably temperature-dependent. For example, the logarithm of reaction rate and equilibria constants are proportional to the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. It is therefore possible to have non-linear, very steep changes in chemical phenomena over a relatively small temperature range. On the contrary, transport processes are more influenced by spatial temperature, momentum, and pressure gradients as well as by the density, porosity, and composition of indoor materials. Consequently, emergent phenomena, such as emission rates or dynamic air concentrations, can be the result of complex temperature-dependent relationships that require a more empirical approach. Indoor environmental conditions are further influenced by the thermal comfort needs of occupants. Not only do occupants have to create thermal conditions that serve to maintain their core body temperature, which is usually accomplished by wearing appropriate clothing, but also the surroundings must be adapted so that they feel comfortable. This includes the interaction of the living space with the ambient environment, which can vary greatly by region and season. Design of houses, apartments, commercial buildings, and schools is generally utility and comfort driven, requiring an appropriate energy balance, sometimes considering ventilation but rarely including the impact of temperature on indoor contaminant levels. In our article, we start with a review of fundamental thermodynamic variables and discuss their influence on typical indoor processes. Then, we describe the heat balance of people in their thermal environment. An extensive literature study is devoted to the thermal conditions in buildings, the temperature-dependent release of indoor pollutants from materials and their distribution in the various interior compartments as well as aspects of indoor chemistry. The diversity of fused filament fabrication (FFF) filaments continues to grow rapidly as the popularity of FFF-3D desktop printers for the use as home fabrication devices has been greatly increased in the past decade. Potential harmful emissions and associated health risks when operating indoors have induced many emission studies. However, the lack of standardization of measurements impeded an objectifiable comparison of research findings. Therefore, we designed a chamber-based standard method, i.e., the strand printing method (SPM), which provides a standardized printing procedure and quantifies systematically the particle emission released from individual FFF-3D filaments under controlled conditions. Forty-four marketable filament products were tested. The total number of emitted particles (TP) varied by approximately four orders of magnitude (10 9  ≤ TP ≤ 10 13 ), indicating that origin of polymers, manufacturer-specific additives, and undeclared impurities have a strong influence. Our results suggest that TP characterizes an individual filament product and particle emissions cannot be categorized by the polymer type (e.g., PLA or ABS) alone. The user's choice of a filament product is therefore decisive for the exposure to released particles during operation. Thus, choosing a filament product awarded for low emissions seems to be an easily achievable preemptive measure to prevent health hazards., (© 2022 The Authors. Head orientations directly determine movement directions of exhaled pathogen-laden droplets, while there is a lack of research about the effect of the infected person's head orientations on respiratory disease transmission during close contact. This work experimentally investigated the effect of different head orientations of an infected person (IP) on the bioaerosol deposition on a healthy person (HP) during close contact. Also, the effectiveness of PV flow in reducing bioaerosol deposition on the HP under the IP's different head orientations was investigated. Bacteriophage T3 was employed to represent viruses inside the cough-generated aerosols. The bioaerosol depositions on different locations of the HP's upper body (chest, shoulder, and neck) and face (chin, mucous membranes, cheek, and forehead) were characterized by a cultivation method. Results showed that the IP's different head orientations resulted in significantly different deposition density on the HP. PV flow could reduce the bioaerosol deposition remarkably for most cases investigated. The effectiveness of PV flow in reducing deposition on the HP was significantly affected by the IP's head orientations. Findings suggest that changing head orientations can be a control measure to reduce the bioaerosol deposition. After decades of development, the indoor environment in China has changed. A systematic review was conducted from peer-reviewed scientific papers with field test data of indoor radon in China from 2000 to 2020 for three types of buildings. The mean concentrations of indoor radon for dwellings, school buildings, and office buildings are 54.6, 56.1, and 54.9 Bq/m 3 . The indoor radon concentration was related to seasons, climate regions, ventilation, decoration, and other factors such as soil and outdoor air. Colder seasons, especially in severe colder areas of China, newer decorated buildings, closed windows, and doors were all associated with higher indoor radon concentrations. Variables like climate region and ventilation showed statistical significance in the correlation analysis. Regarding the increasing trend of indoor radon concentration in China during the last two decades, further study of indoor radon is necessary especially for school buildings and office buildings, and will help access its environmental burden of disease in China more accurately., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons A/S. The emission rate of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) depends on many factors but mainly on the activity level (metabolic rate) of occupants. In this study, we examined two other factors that may influence the CO 2 emission rate, namely the background CO 2 concentration and the indoor temperature. Six male volunteers sat one by one in a 1.7 m 3 chamber for 2.5 h and performed light office-type work under five different conditions with two temperature levels (23 vs. 28°C) and three background concentrations of CO 2 (800 vs. 1400 vs. 3000 ppm). Background CO 2 levels were increased either by dosing CO 2 from a cylinder or by reducing the outdoor air supply rate. Physiological responses to warmth, added CO 2 , and bioeffluents were monitored. The rate of CO 2 emission was estimated using a mass-balance equation. The results indicate a higher CO 2 emission rate at the higher temperature, at which the subjects were warm, and a lower emission rate in all conditions in which the background CO 2 concentration increased. Emission testing of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from materials and products is commonly based on emission test chamber measurements. To ensure the comparability of results from different testing laboratories, their measurement performance must be verified. For this purpose, Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) organizes an international proficiency test (round robin test, RRT) every two years using well-characterized test materials (one sealant, one furniture board, and four times a lacquer) with defined VOC emissions. The materials fulfilled the requirements of homogeneity, reproducibility, and stability. Altogether, 36 VOCs were included of which 33 gave test chamber air concentrations between 13 and 83 µg/m 3 . This is the typical concentration range to be expected and to be quantified when performing chamber tests. Three compounds had higher concentrations between 326 and 1105 µg/m 3 . In this paper, the relative standard deviations (RSD) of BAM round robin tests since 2008 are compared and the improvement of the comparability of the emission chamber testing is shown by the decrease of the mean RSD down to 28% in 2018. We applied filter forensics, the analysis of dust from the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) filters, to measure particle size distribution in 21 residences in Toronto, Canada over a year. Four filters with different nominal efficiencies (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) 8-14 from ASHRAE Standard 52.2) were deployed in each residence each for three months, while the effective filtration volumes (the product of flow rate, runtime, and in-situ filter efficiency) were characterized over each filter lifetime. Using extraction and laser diffraction, we found that approximately 90% of the volumetric distributions were >10 µm and the volume median diameter (VMD) ranged from 23.4 to 75.1 µm. Using quantitative filter forensics (QFF), total suspended particle (TSP) concentrations ranged from 2.9 to 823.7 µg/m 3 (median = 89.8 µg/m 3 ) with a moderate correlation with the content of TSP on the filters (in terms of g) and with the TSP effective filtration volume (m 3 ) indicating the importance of both filter forensics and HVAC metadata parameters to QFF concentration estimates. There was no strong correlation between PM 10 or PM 2.5 concentrations and hourly airborne particle number concentrations measured by low-cost sensors suggesting an evaluation of QFF is warranted, particularly for the exploration of smaller particles., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Microbes in buildings have attracted extensive attention from both the research community and the general public due to their close relationship with human health. However, there still lacks comprehensive information on the indoor exposure level of microbes in China. This study systematically reviews exposure levels, the community structures, and the impact factors of airborne bacteria and fungi in residences, schools, and offices in China. We reviewed the major literature databases between 1980 and 2019 and selected 55 original studies based on a set of criteria. Results show that the concentration of indoor bacteria varies from 72.5 to 7500 CFU/m 3 , with a median value of 1000 CFU/m 3 , and the concentration of fungi varies from 12 to 9730 CFU/m 3 , with a median value of 526 CFU/m 3 . The concentration level of microbes varies in different climate zones, with higher bacterial concentrations in the severe cold zone, and higher fungal concentrations in the hot summer and warm winter zone. Among different buildings, classrooms have the highest average bacteria and fungi levels. The aim of this review was to investigate human exposure to relevant indoor air contaminants, predictors affecting the levels, and the means to reduce the harmful exposure in indoor sports facilities. Our study revealed that the contaminants of primary concern are the following: particulate matter in indoor climbing, golf, and horse riding facilities; carbon dioxide and particulate matter in fitness centers, gymnasiums, and sports halls; Staphylococci on gymnasium surfaces; nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in ice hockey arenas; carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide(s), and particulate matter in motor sports arenas; and disinfection by-products in indoor chlorinated swimming pools. Means to reduce human exposure to indoor contaminants include the following: adequate mechanical ventilation with filters, suitable cleaning practices, a limited number of occupants in fitness centers and gymnasiums, the use of electric resurfacers instead of the engine powered resurfacers in ice hockey arenas, carefully regulated chlorine and temperature levels in indoor swimming pools, properly ventilated pools, and good personal hygiene. Because of the large number of susceptible people in these facilities, as well as all active people having an increased respiratory rate and airflow velocity, strict air quality requirements in indoor sports facilities should be maintained., (© 2020 The Authors. Poor indoor air quality indicated by elevated indoor CO 2 concentrations has been linked with impaired cognitive function, yet current findings of the cognitive impact of CO 2 are inconsistent. This review summarizes the results from 37 experimental studies that conducted objective cognitive tests with manipulated CO 2 concentrations, either through adding pure CO 2 or adjusting ventilation rates (the latter also affects other indoor pollutants). Studies with varied designs suggested that both approaches can affect multiple cognitive functions. In a subset of studies that meet objective criteria for strength and consistency, pure CO 2 at a concentration common in indoor environments was only found to affect high-level decision-making measured by the Strategic Management Simulation battery in non-specialized populations, while lower ventilation and accumulation of indoor pollutants, including CO 2 , could reduce the speed of various functions but leave accuracy unaffected. Major confounding factors include variations in cognitive assessment methods, study designs, individual and populational differences in subjects, and uncertainties in exposure doses. Accordingly, future research is suggested to adopt direct air delivery for precise control of CO 2 inhalation, include brain imaging techniques to better understand the underlying mechanisms that link CO 2 and cognitive function, and explore the potential interaction between CO 2 and other environmental stimuli., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Building materials and human activities are important sources of contamination indoors, but little information is available regarding contamination during construction process which could persist during the whole life of buildings. In this study, six construction stages on two construction sites were investigated regarding the emissions of 43 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 46 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), and the presence of 4 genera of mold. Results show that the future indoor air quality does not only depend on the emissions of each building product but that it is also closely related to the whole implementation process. Mold spore measurements can reach 1400 CFU/m 3 , which is particularly high compared with the concentrations usually measured in indoor environments. Relatively low concentrations of VOCs were observed, in relation to the use of low emissive materials. Among SVOCs analyzed, some phthalates, permethrin, and hydrocarbons were found in significant concentrations upon the delivery of building as well as triclosan, suspected to be endocrine disruptor, and yet prohibited in the treatment of materials and construction since 2014. Numerous acids and bases influence indoor air quality. The most abundant of these species are CO 2 (acidic) and NH 3 (basic), both emitted by building occupants. Other prominent inorganic acids are HNO 3 , HONO, SO 2 , H 2 SO 4 , HCl, and HOCl. Prominent organic acids include formic, acetic, and lactic; nicotine is a noteworthy organic base. Sources of N-, S-, and Cl-containing acids can include ventilation from outdoors, indoor combustion, consumer product use, and chemical reactions. Organic acids are commonly more abundant indoors than outdoors, with indoor sources including occupants, wood, and cooking. Beyond NH 3 and nicotine, other noteworthy bases include inorganic and organic amines. Acids and bases partition indoors among the gas-phase, airborne particles, bulk water, and surfaces; relevant thermodynamic parameters governing the partitioning are the acid-dissociation constant (K a ), Henry's law constant (K H ), and the octanol-air partition coefficient (K oa ). Condensed-phase water strongly influences the fate of indoor acids and bases and is also a medium for chemical interactions. Indoor surfaces can be large reservoirs of acids and bases. This extensive review of the state of knowledge establishes a foundation for future inquiry to better understand how acids and bases influence the suitability of indoor environments for occupants, cultural artifacts, and sensitive equipment., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Many studies have shown that the use of laser printing devices (LPDs) contributes to the release of particles into the indoor environment. However, after more than two decades of research, the physicochemical properties of LPD-emitted particles and the possible health effects from exposure to particles are still heavily debated. We therefore carried out a critical review of the published studies around emissions and health effects of LPD-emitted particles, aiming at elucidating the nature of these particles and their potential health risks. Realizing the varying methodologies of the studies, a classification of the reviewed studies is adopted, resulting in three categories of emission studies (chamber experiment, office/room measurement, and photocopy shop measurement), and three types of health studies (in vitro/animal studies, human studies in the real world, and human studies in controlled settings). The strengths and limitations of each type of study are discussed in-depth, which in turn helps to understand the cause of divergent results. Overall, LPD-emitted particles are mainly condensed or secondary-formed semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), while solid toner particles account for a very small fraction. This paper presents a review on thermal comfort research that is informed by changes in occupant behavior, lifestyle, and income leading to rebound or pre-bound effect. It explores the current state of research in thermal comfort domain through a systematic review to identify the gaps and opportunities specifically focusing on energy-intensive developing countries. This review argues that adaptive thermal comfort is a continuously evolving domain owing to dynamic modifications in occupant behavior occurring from changes in the cost of energy services and preference of comfort (rebound/pre-bound effect). A conceptual framework linking thermal comfort, rebound/pre-bound effect, and occupant behavior is forwarded through the introduction of an exogenous factor related to occupant well-being. 3-D printers are widely used. Based on previous findings, we hypothesized that their emissions could enhance allergen responsiveness and reduce lung diffusing capacity. Using a cross-over design, 28 young subjects with seasonal allergic rhinitis were exposed to 3-D printer emissions, either from polylactic acid (PLA) or from acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (ABS), for 2 h each. Ninety minutes later, nasal allergen challenges were performed, with secretions sampled after 1.5 h. Besides nasal functional and inflammatory responses, assessments included diffusing capacity. There was also an inclusion day without exposure. The exposures elicited slight reductions in lung diffusing capacity for inhaled nitric oxide (DL NO ) that were similar for PLA and ABS. Rhinomanometry showed the same allergen responses after both exposures. In nasal secretions, concentrations of interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor were slightly reduced after ABS exposure versus inclusion day, while that of interleukin 5 was slightly increased after PLA exposure versus inclusion., (© 2022 The Authors. The quantification of how healthy the indoor air is, is a complex issue comprising of a large number of contaminants of various sources. The health implication of exposure to each of the contaminant deemed of importance can be expressed using Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). The sum of all DALYs indicates how harmful the indoor air was during the investigated time-frame. This metric was originally developed by the World Bank and the WHO. In 2012, Logue et. al described two methods to estimate the DALYs related to exposure to contaminants in the indoor air based on the yearly mean exposure concentration of a population. The downside of these methods is that, when detailed exposure concentration profiles are available the method results in a loss of information. A novel method was developed to estimate DALYs originating from exposure to indoor pollutants that can be used for time-resolved exposure concentration data without this loss of information: Dynamic DALYs. The advantage of this method is that it can be calculated in real-time and for short or long periods of data. As such it can be used for pin-pointing problematic events in the exposure profile of a person and, as it can be calculated in real-time, makes it a candidate for use in automated optimization problems. The use of Dynamic DALYs is demonstrated for a simulation case-study of an occupied apartment. One continuously ventilated system (Dcont) and one smart ventilation system (Dsmart) are compared. Sources of typically indoor generated Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) were added and the related exposure profile and Dynamic DALY results of the working adult were analyzed. The results showcase detailed and more summative results with regards to health and energy use using the novel indicator. The performance of an air purifier is determined by its clean air delivery rate (CADR), expressed as the product of the air flowrate and filter collection efficiency. A high CADR in a commercial air purifier is achieved using a pleated air filter with high filtration performance at a given air flowrate. However, obtaining this high filtration performance depends on the knowledge of the manufacturer, including the optimal pleating design, which remains uncertain to date. In this study, test pleated filters were prepared by folding a flat electrostatically-charged E12 filter medium to obtain different pleating geometries. The proper pleat geometry of the pleated filter, which has a minimum pressure drop at a fixed air flowrate, was dependent on the pleat length (P L ) and pleating ratio (α = pleat height/pleat width), wherein as the P L increases, the α range required to achieve a minimum pressure drop similarly increases. Based on the filter quality factor (q F ), the optimal pleat geometry of a pleated filter was between α values of 6-8, irrespective of the P L . The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which suddenly appeared at the beginning of 2020, revealed our knowledge deficits in terms of ventilation and air pollution control. It took many weeks to realize that aerosols are the main route of transmission. The initial attempt to hold back these aerosols through textile masks seemed almost helpless, although there is sufficient knowledge about the retention capacity of fabric filters for aerosols. In the absence of a sufficient number of permanently installed heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, three main approaches are pursued: (a) increasing the air exchange rate by supplying fresh air, (b) using mobile air purifiers, and (c) disinfection by introducing active substances into the room air. This article discusses the feasibility of these different approaches critically. It also provides experimental results of air exchange measurements in a school classroom that is equipped with a built-in fan for supplying fresh air. With such a fan and a window tilted at the appropriate distance, an air exchange rate of 5/h can be set at a low power level and without any significant noise pollution. Heat balance calculations show that no additional heat exchanger is necessary in a normal classroom with outside temperatures above 10°C. Furthermore, a commercial mobile air purifier is studied in a chamber and a test room setup in order to examine and evaluate the efficiency of such devices against viable viruses under controlled and realistic conditions. This study was performed to investigate radon levels in dwellings in the mining area near the town of Kosovska Mitrovica. The Passive radon technique based on the charcoal canister test kit conducted in summer and autumn 2019 showed unexpected results. The reference level of 300 Bq/m 3 for indoor radon concentration was exceeded in 15 of 26 dwellings. Preliminary measurements of gamma dose rate in some dwellings built from local stone showed values from 0.30 to 0.45 μSv/h, while 75% of measurements in dwellings with stone foundations had radon above the reference level. The highest radon concentration (22 500 ± 220 Bq/m 3 ) was measured in the cellar of one family house. The RAD7 device (Durridge Company, Inc.) was used to measure radon concentrations in water and nearby soil of some dwellings. Indoor radon concentration fluctuated significantly over two days; over a one-day time scale, radon varied from 2843 ± 217 Bq/m 3 at midnight to 1449 ± 104 Bq/m 3 in the morning at one site, and abruptly decreased from a maximum of 2146 ± 262 Bq/m 3 in one day to a minimum of 21 Bq/m 3 the next day at another site. Understanding airborne infectious disease transmission on public transport is essential to reducing the risk of infection of passengers and crew members. We propose a new one-dimensional (1D) model that predicts the longitudinal dispersion of airborne contaminants and the risk of disease transmission inside a railway carriage. We compare the results of this 1D-model to the predictions of a model that assumes the carriage is fully mixed. The 1D-model is validated using measurements of controlled carbon-dioxide experiments conducted in a full-scale railway carriage. This paper investigated principal parameters affecting individual differences of thermal preference. 36 male college students were selected from three thermal preference groups by a questionnaire, including 10 of cool preference (Gcp), 17 of neutral preference (Gnp), and 9 of warm preference (Gwp). Subsequently, their thermal preferences were further examined by a human trial in a climate chamber. Once significant differences were found between groups, subjects' 57 parameters, including body geometry, body composition, cardio-pulmonary capacity, and physical fitness, were measured. Compared to Gwp, Gcp had higher weight (80.0 vs. 64.2 kg), body mass index (BMI) (26 vs. 20.8 kg·m -2 ), body surface area (BSA) (1.94 vs. 1.78 m 2 ), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (87.29% vs. 80.23%), body circumferences (except for forearm circumference), skinfold thickness of all the local parts, volume of expired air (VE) (50.97 vs. 40.81 L/min), and body fat rate (BFR) (24.44% vs. 14.07%), but had a lower specific surface area (SSA) (0.02477 vs. 0.02791 m 2 /kg), resting metabolic rate (RMR) per kilogram (1.21 vs. 1.47 W/kg), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (65.30 vs. 74.69 mmHg), and percentages of muscle (71.17% vs. 80.95%), total water (55.35% vs. 63.14%), skeletal muscle (42.47% vs. 47.94%), protein (14.90% vs. 16.94%), inorganic salt (5.29% vs. 5.86%), and bone mineral (0.044% vs. 0.048%). To better understand the impact of molds on indoor air quality, we studied the photochemistry of microbial films made by Aspergillus niger species, a common indoor mold. Specifically, we investigated their implication in the conversion of adsorbed nitrate anions into gaseous nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ), as well as the related VOC emissions under different indoor conditions, using a high-resolution proton transfer reaction-time of flight-mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) and a long path absorption photometer (LOPAP). The different mold preparations were characterized by the means of direct injection into an Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer with a heated electrospray ionization (ESI-Orbitrap-MS). The formation of a wide range of VOCs, having emission profiles sensitive to the types of films (either doped by potassium nitrate or not), cultivation time, UV-light irradiation, potassium nitrate concentration and relative humidity was observed. The formation of nitrous acid from these films was also determined and found to be dependent on light and relative humidity. Finally, the reaction paths for the NO x and HONO production are proposed. Knowledge about person-to-person transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is reviewed, emphasizing three components: emission of virus-containing particles and drops from infectious persons; transport and fate of such emissions indoors; and inhalation of viral particles by susceptible persons. Emissions are usefully clustered into three groups: small particles (diameter 0.1-5 µm), large particles (5-100 µm), and ballistic drops (>100 µm). Speaking generates particles and drops across the size spectrum. Small particles are removed from indoor air at room scale by ventilation, filtration, and deposition; large particles mainly deposit onto indoor surfaces. Proximate exposure enhancements are associated with large particles with contributions from ballistic drops. Masking and social distancing are effective in mitigating transmission from proximate exposures. At room scale, masking, ventilation, and filtration can contribute to limit exposures. Important information gaps prevent a quantitative reconciliation of the high overall global spread of COVID-19 with known transmission pathways. Available information supports several findings with moderate-to-high confidence: transmission occurs predominantly indoors; inhalation of airborne particles (up to 50 µm in diameter) contributes substantially to viral spread; transmission occurs in near proximity and at room scale; speaking is a major source of airborne SARS-CoV-2 virus; and emissions can occur without strong illness symptoms., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Essential oil products are increasingly used in indoor environments and have been found to negatively contribute to indoor air quality. Moreover, the chemicals and fragrances emitted by those products may affect the central nervous system and cognitive function. This study uses a double-blind between-subject design to investigate the cognitive impact of exposure to the emissions from essential oil used in an ultrasonic diffuser. In a simulated office environment where other environmental parameters were maintained constant, 34 female and 25 male university students were randomly allocated into four essential oil exposure scenarios. The first two scenarios contrast lemon oil to pure deionized water, while the latter two focus on different levels of particulate matter differentiated by HEPA filters with non-scented grapeseed oil as the source. Cognitive function was assessed using a computer-based battery consisting of five objective tests that involve reasoning, response inhabitation, memory, risk-taking, and decision-making. Results show that exposure to essential oil emissions caused shortened reaction time at the cost of significantly worse response inhabitation control and memory sensitivity, indicating potentially more impulsive decision-making. To date, only three studies have investigated the association of household air pollution (HAP) exposure with pregnancy disorders. The ameliorating role of diet and nutrition in the association has never been explored. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 799 mothers who had recently given singleton birth in the Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana. Structured questionnaire and semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire were used to assess HAP exposure (from use of biomass fuels for cooking and garbage burning at home) and vitamin D (vitD) intake, respectively. Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to investigate the association between HAP exposure and pregnancy disorders. HAP exposure due to cooking with biomass fuels and garbage burning at home was associated with two fold (AOR = 2.15; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05, 4.43) and six fold (AOR = 6.35; 95% CI: 2.43, 16.58) increased odds of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). For gestational diabetes (GDM), the increased odds were two folds for both exposures but the 95% CI included the null value. Stove stacking was also associated with two folds increased odds of GDM (AOR = 1.83; 95% CI: 0.91, 3.68). In stratified analysis, the odds of HDP and GDM associated with biomass fuels use decreased with increasing vitD intake. All the interaction p values were, however, greater than 0.05. We provide the first evidence on the ameliorating role of vitD intake on the effect of HAP exposure on pregnancy disorders. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is an important environmental parameter in aircraft cabins. To understand the most recent, real-time CO 2 concentration levels and their key influencing factors in aircraft cabins, we conducted in-flight measurements of 52 randomly selected commercial flights with different aircraft types and durations from August 2017 to August 2019. The spatial temporal characteristics of CO 2 concentrations on board were analyzed and summarized. For the flight time scale, the CO 2 concentrations during the boarding phase (1680 ± 558 ppmv) were notably higher than that in other phases, whereas the condition of the cruising phase was the lowest in most flights. The flight average CO 2 concentrations of the cruising phase were 1253 ± 164 ppmv, and the corresponding estimated outside airflow rates were 6.2 ± 1.3 L/s/p in the economy class across all flights. Single-aisle and twin-aisle flights did not show noticeable differences for the same phases. Relatively uniform CO 2 concentrations were observed at different positions of the same class. By comparing the results of this study with those previously reported, CO 2 concentrations showed a slightly decreasing trend over the last 30 years. Humans emit carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) as a product of their metabolism. Its concentration in buildings is used as a marker of ventilation rate (VR) and degree of mixing of supply air, and indoor air quality (IAQ). The CO 2 emission rate (CER) may be used to estimate the ventilation rate. Many studies have measured CERs from subjects who were awake but little data are available from sleeping subjects and the present publication was intended to reduce this gap in knowledge. Seven females (29 ± 5 years old; BMI: 22.2 ± 0.8 kg/m 2 ) and four males (27 ± 1 years old; BMI: 20.5 ± 1.5 kg/m 2 ) slept for four consecutive nights in a specially constructed capsule at two temperatures (24 and 28°C) and two VRs that maintained CO 2  levels at ca. 800 ppm and 1700 ppm simulating sleeping conditions reported in the literature. The order of exposure was balanced, and the first night was for adaptation. Their physiological responses, including heart rate, pNN 50, core body temperature, and skin temperature, were measured as well as sleep quality, and subjective responses were collected each evening and morning. Measured steady-state CO 2 concentrations during sleep were used to estimate CERs with a mass-balance equation. The average CER was 11.0 ± 1.4 L/h per person and was 8% higher for males than for females (P < 0.05). Increasing the temperature or decreasing IAQ by decreasing VR had no effects on measured CERs and caused no observable differences in physiological responses. We also calculated CERs for sleeping subjects using the published data on sleep energy expenditure (SEE) and Respiratory Quotient (RQ), and our measured CERs confirmed both these calculations and the CERs predicted using the equations provided by ASHRAE Standard 62.1, ASHRAE Handbook, and ASTM D6245-18. Three conditions were established to investigate the effects of ventilation and related ventilation noise on sleep quality: No mechanical ventilation/low noise (A); Mechanical ventilation /low noise (B); Mechanical ventilation/high noise (C). The interventions were achieved by idling a mechanical ventilation system or operating it in two different modes. Nine young people and nine older people were all exposed to each of the three conditions for a whole night's sleep, but data from only 15 subjects were analyzed as three young subjects apparently slept with open windows in condition A. Sleep quality was measured objectively with polysomnography (PSG), which monitored signals of electroencephalogram (EEG), bilateral electrooculogram (EOG), and chin electromyogram (EMG) continuously during the sleeping period. Saliva samples were collected before sleep at night and after waking in the morning, and the concentrations of cortisol and lysozyme in them were determined. Without mechanical ventilation, the indoor CO 2 level averaged about 1400 ppm during the night. Operating the mechanical ventilation decreased the indoor CO 2 to below 1000 ppm, which improved objectively measured sleep quality: wake time after sleep onset (WASO) decreased on average by 15 min (p < 0.05) and sleep efficiency (SE) increased on average by about 4% (p < 0.05). Increased ventilation noise level (50.8dB(A) vs. 34.7dB(A); 54.9dB(C) vs. 48dB(C)) did not significantly change SE or WASO but did change the duration of sleep stages: It decreased the duration of deep sleep by 11min (p < 0.05) and REM sleep by 17 min (p < 0.01) and increased the duration of light sleep by 17 min (p < 0.05). The ventilation noise significantly increased the concentration of lysozyme in the elderly (p < 0.05) although no significant effects on cortisol could be shown. Ultrasonic essential oil diffusers (EODs) are a popular type of indoor scenting source. We performed a chamber study in which we measured the emissions from EODs used with lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, and grapeseed oils. Over the course of 15 min, the most abundant VOCs released from lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, and grapeseed oils were 2.6 ± 0.7 mg of d-limonene, 3.5 ± 0.4 mg of eucalyptol, 1.0 ± 0.1 mg of linalyl acetate, and 0.2 ± 0.02 mg of linalyl acetate, respectively. Each oil had a unique particulate matter (PM) emission profile in terms of size, number density, and rate. The dominant size ranges of the PM were 10-100 nm for lemon oil, 50-100 nm for lavender oil, 10-50 nm for lemon oil, and above 200 nm for grapeseed oil. PM 1 emission rates of approximately 2 mg/h, 0.1 mg/h, and 3 mg/h, were observed for lemon, lavender/eucalyptus, and grapeseed oils, respectively. A fivefold increase in PM 1 emission was measured when the EOD with eucalyptus oil was filled with tap water as opposed to deionized water. Burning candles release a variety of pollutants to indoor air, some of which are of concern for human health. We studied emissions of particles and gases from the stressed burning of five types of pillar candles with different wax and wick compositions. The stressed burning was introduced by controlled fluctuating air velocities in a 21.6 m 3 laboratory chamber. The aerosol physicochemical properties were measured both in well-mixed chamber air and directly above the candle flame with online and offline techniques. All candles showed different emission profiles over time with high repeatability among replicates. The particle mass emissions from stressed burning for all candle types were dominated by soot (black carbon; BC). The wax and wick composition strongly influenced emissions of BC, PM 2.5 , and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and to lower degree ultrafine particles, inorganic and organic carbon fraction of PM, but did not influence NO x , formaldehyde, and gas-phase PAHs. Measurements directly above the flame showed empirical evidence of short-lived strong emission peaks of soot particles. The results show the importance of including the entire burn time of candles in exposure assessments, as their emissions can vary strongly over time. Screening the volatiles isolated from a standard polypropylene material consisting of a polypropylene homopolymer, the filler talcum, and a mixture of antioxidants, for odor-active compounds by application of an aroma extract dilution analysis revealed 30 odorants with flavor dilution factors ranging from 1 to 64. Eighteen odor-active compounds were subsequently quantitated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry using stable isotopically substituted odorants as internal standards, and their odor activity values (OAVs) were calculated as ratios of the concentrations to the odor threshold values. Five odorants showed OAVs ≥1, among which were hex-1-en-3-one (OAV 12), butanoic acid (OAV 3), as well as 4-methylphenol, butan-1-ol, and 2-tert-butylphenol (all OAV 1). A comparative analysis of polypropylene materials with different additives suggested plastic-like, pungent smelling hex-1-en-3-one as an ubiquitous key odorant. Odor-active amounts of alkylphenols, in particular plastic-like, phenolic smelling 2-tert-butylphenol, were additionally formed in the presence of talcum and phenolic antioxidants. Whereas the precursors of the phenols were thus obvious, the origin of hex-1-en-3-one was unknown. Injection molding showed only little influence on odorant concentrations., (© 2021 The Authors. We reviewed 47 documents published 1967-2019 that reported measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on commercial aircraft. We compared the measurements with the air quality standards and guidelines for aircraft cabins and in some cases buildings. Average levels of VOCs for which limits exist were lower than the permissible levels except for benzene with average concentration at 5.9 ± 5.5 μg/m 3 . Toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, limonene, nonanal, hexanal, decanal, octanal, acetic acid, acetone, ethanol, butanal, acrolein, isoprene and menthol were the most frequently measured compounds. The concentrations of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and other contaminants did not exceed standards and guidelines in buildings except for the average NO 2 concentration at 12 ppb. Although the focus was on VOCs, we also retrieved the data on other parameters characterizing cabin environment. Ozone concentration averaged 38 ppb below the upper limit recommended for aircraft. The outdoor air supply rate ranged from 1.7 to 39.5 L/s per person and averaged 6.0 ± 0.8 L/s/p (median 5.8 L/s/p), higher than the minimum level recommended for commercial aircraft. Carbon dioxide concentration averaged 1315 ± 232 ppm, lower than what is permitted in aircraft and close to what is permitted in buildings. Measured temperatures averaged 23.5 ± 0.8°C and were generally within the ranges recommended for avoiding thermal discomfort. In retail stores, workers are constantly exposed to new manufactured goods. The issue of the exposure of retail workers to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) should clearly be considered. Therefore, this study provides data regarding VOC concentrations in ten French retail stores. The stores were chosen to represent various products: sports goods, shoes and leather, furniture, car equipment, bazaars, online-sales storage, clothes, books, DIY (do-it-yourself), and household appliances. VOCs and aldehydes were actively sampled on the same day in five to seven locations per building and outdoors. Toluene and formaldehyde were omnipresent with indoor concentrations reaching 252 and 53 µg/m 3 , respectively. The car equipment store, followed by clothing, shoes, and leather, and DIY stores showed the worst indoor air quality. High concentrations were measured, for example, the maximum α-pinene concentration in the furniture and DIY stores was 364 and 141 µg/m 3 , respectively, and the heptane concentration in the car equipment store reached 1,316 µg/m 3 . Two VOCs classified as toxic to reproduction were measured: hexane in the car equipment store and the bazaar, and dimethylformamide in the sports goods store. Ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), as one of the predominant air pollutants, has achieved effective control in recent years in China. Whether the use of indoor air purifiers is still necessary needs further exploration. A randomized crossover trial was conducted in 54 healthy students in Beijing, China. Participants were randomized assigned to the use of real or sham high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) for a week and changed the status after a washout period. Health measurements of cardiorespiratory biomarkers were performed at the end of each period. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the association between PM 2.5 exposure and cardiorespiratory biomarkers. Compared with sham air purification, average diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and 8-isoprostane (8-isoPGF2α) levels decreased significantly in the real purification. The effects of indoor air purification on lung function indicators including forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1 ), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and forced expiratory flow between the 25th and 75th percentile of forced vital capacity (FEF 25%-75% ) were also significant. Our findings showed a protective effect of indoor HEPA air purifiers on cardiorespiratory health of young healthy adults reflected by the decreased blood pressure, respiratory inflammation, and systematic oxidative stress and improved lung function., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background: Household incense burning is a common ritual behavior in the Asia-Pacific region but has been associated with inferior developmental outcomes in term infants. We aimed to examine these associations among preterm infants., Methods: Information from 1190 mother-infant pairs during 6- and 18-month follow-up to the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study was examined for associations between household incense burning exposure and infant neurodevelopmental milestone achievement using multivariable Cox proportional hazard model with propensity score weighting, along with stratified, sensitivity, and decomposition analysis., Results: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delayed gross motor milestone achievement among all preterm infants according to the Cox model and after propensity score weighting. Meanwhile, associations for delayed development were found in gross motor domain milestones among late preterm infants, while fine motor domain delay was found among other preterm infants. Furthermore, the associations between household incense burning status and gross motor milestone delays were attenuated by the interaction between higher education level and household incense burning exposure status., Conclusions: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delays, and the motor domains affected differed according to degree of prematurity. Indoor air quality (IAQ) in classrooms has a significant impact on children's academic performance, health, and well-being; therefore, understanding children's perception of IAQ is vital. This study investigates how children's perception of IAQ is affected by environmental variables and thermal sensation. In total, 29 naturally ventilated classrooms in eight UK primary schools were selected and 805 children were surveyed during non-heating and heating seasons. Results show that air sensation votes (ASVs) are more correlated to CO 2 levels than to operative temperatures (T op ) during non-heating seasons and more correlated to T op than CO 2 levels during heating seasons. The impact of T op on ASVs decreases with an increase in CO 2 levels, and the effect of CO 2 levels on ASVs decreases with increase in T op . The most favorable ASVs are given when children feel "cool" and have "as it is" preference. By keeping CO 2  < 1000 ppm and T op within children's thermal comfort band, ASVs are improved by 43%. The study recommends that standards should consider the impact of both temperature and CO 2 levels on perceived IAQ. Perception of IAQ also affects children's overall comfort and tiredness levels; however, this influence is more significant on tiredness level than that on overall comfort level., (© 2020 The Authors. Respiratory microbiome is an understudied area of research compared to other microbiomes of the human body. The respiratory tract is exposed to an array of environmental pollutants, including microbes. Yet, we know very little about the relationship between environmental and respiratory microbiome. The primary aim of our study was to compare the mycobiomes and bacteriomes between three sample types from the same participants, including home dust, saliva, and sputum. Samples were collected from 40 adolescents in a longitudinal cohort. We analyzed the samples using 16s bacterial rDNA and ITS fungal rDNA gene sequencing, as well as quantitative PCR with universal fungal and bacterial primers. Results showed that home dust had the greatest alpha diversity between the three sample types for both bacteria and fungi. Dust had the highest total fungal load and the lowest total bacterial load. Sputum had greater bacterial diversity than saliva, but saliva had greater fungal diversity than sputum. The distribution of major bacterial phyla differed between all sample types. However, the distribution of major fungal classes differed only between sputum and saliva. Future research should examine the biological significance of the taxa found in each sample type based on microbial ecology and associations with health effects., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. This study investigates the performance of two systems: personalized ventilation (PV) and ductless personalized ventilation (DPV). Even though the literature indicates a compelling performance of PV, it is not often used in practice due to its impracticality. Therefore, the present study assesses the possibility of replacing the inflexible PV with DPV in office rooms equipped with displacement ventilation (DV) in the summer season. Numerical simulations were utilized to evaluate the inhaled concentration of pollutants when PV and DPV are used. The systems were compared in a simulated office with two occupants: a susceptible occupant and a source occupant. Three types of pollution were simulated: exhaled infectious air, dermally emitted contamination, and room contamination from a passive source. Results indicated that PV improved the inhaled air quality regardless of the location of the pollution source; a higher PV supply flow rate positively impacted the inhaled air quality. Contrarily, the performance of DPV was highly sensitive to the source location and the personalized flow rate. A higher DPV flow rate tends to decrease the inhaled air quality due to increased mixing of pollutants in the room. This paper investigates the effects of household air pollution (HAP) on child stunting in India using a sample of 206, 898 under-five children from the latest National Family Health Survey (2015-16). Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis were used to understand the association of stunting by type of cooking fuel, separate kitchen, and indoor smoking in the household. Using clean cooking fuels (CCFs), having a separate kitchen, and being unexposed to smoking can reduce the prevalence of stunting by 4%, 1%, and 1%, respectively, from the current prevalence of stunting (38%). The probability of childhood stunting among children living in households using unclean cooking fuel (UCF) was significantly higher (OR-1.16; 95% CI: 1.13-1.19) than those living in households using CCF. Findings were similar results in the absence of separate kitchen (OR-1.08; 95% CI: 1.05-1.10) and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (OR-1.06; 95% CI: 1.04-1.08). Households using UCF had a 16% higher likelihood of stunting, while there was a strong gradient of HAP with stunting after controlling socioeconomic and demographic factors. Therefore, the LPG programs, such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, may be crucial to reduce HAP and its adverse impact on stunting, and successively to achieve sustainable development goals., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Portable air cleaners are increasingly used in polluted areas in an attempt to reduce human exposure; however, there has been limited work characterizing their effectiveness at reducing exposure. With this in mind, we recruited forty-three children with asthma from suburban Shanghai and deployed air cleaners (with HEPA and activated carbon filters) in their bedrooms. During both 2-week filtration and non-filtration periods, low-cost PM 2.5 and O 3 air monitors were used to measure pollutants indoors, outdoors, and for personal exposure. Indoor PM 2.5 concentrations were reduced substantially with the use of air cleaners, from 34 ± 17 to 10 ± 8 µg/m 3 , with roughly 80% of indoor PM 2.5 estimated to come from outdoor sources. Personal exposure to PM 2.5 was reduced from 40 ± 17 to 25 ± 14 µg/m 3 . The more modest reductions in personal exposure and high contribution of outdoor PM 2.5 to indoor concentrations highlight the need to reduce outdoor PM 2.5 and/or to clean indoor air in multiple locations. Indoor O 3 concentrations were generally low (mean = 8±4 ppb), and no significant difference was seen by filtration status. The concentrations of pollutants and the air cleaner effectiveness were highly variable over time and across homes, highlighting the usefulness of real-time air monitors for understanding individual exposure reduction strategies., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Moisture damage can influence the subjective assessment of indoor air quality (subjective IAQ) in various ways. We studied whether the frequency of symptoms reported across students at school level mediates the relationship between observed mold and dampness in a school building and students' subjective IAQ. To answer this research question, we tested a multilevel path model. The analyzed data were created by merging two nationwide data sets: (a) survey data from students, including information on subjective IAQ (N = 24,786 students); (b) data from schools, including information on mold and dampness in a school building (N = 222). After the background variables were adjusted, schools' observed mold and dampness were directly and significantly related to poor subjective IAQ (standardized beta (β)= 0.22, P = .002). In addition, in schools with mold and dampness, students reported significantly more symptoms (β = 0.22, P = .023) than in schools without; the higher the prevalence of symptoms at school level, the worse the students' subjective IAQ (β = 0.60, P < .001). This indirect path was significant (P = .023). Taxi drivers' exposure to traffic-related air pollutants inside their vehicles has been reported in different countries but not yet in Lebanon. Thus, we conducted a cross-sectional study on 20 Lebanese taxi drivers to (1) assess their exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) and black carbon (BC) inside their vehicles and (2) identify determinants of this exposure. UFP and BC were measured using Diffusion Size Classifier Miniature ® and microAeth ® Model AE51, respectively, for 5 hours. Data on characteristics of vehicles and trips were collected by face-to-face interviews. Associations between pollutant levels and their determinants were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The mean of UFP count (35.2 ± 17.6 x 10 3 particles cm -3 ) and BC (5.2 ± 1.9 μg m -3 ) concentrations in-taxis was higher in the morning measurements compared with those in the afternoon measurements. UFP count increased in-taxis by 60% for every 10 minutes spent in blocked traffic and by 84% starting from two trips with smokers compared to trips without smokers. Conversely, UFP count decreased by 30% for every 10 minutes under both air-conditioning and air recirculation mode with windows closed. BC was not affected by any of these factors. Indoor Air Quality monitoring in cultural institutions is of particular concern to protect these places and the cultural heritage content. An indoor monitoring campaign was performed in three museums in Florence (Italy) to determine the occurrence and levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs of interest included BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes), terpenes, aldehydes, organic acids, and cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS). The most abundant VOCs in all samples analyzed were BTEX, which were strictly related to the traffic source, followed by siloxanes and terpenes. Among BTEX, toluene was always the most abundant followed by xylenes, ethylbenzene, and benzene. cVMS in exhibition rooms with the presence of visitors showed higher values compared to samples collected when the museums were closed. Terpenes showed not only the influence of vegetation-biogenic sources surrounding a museum but could also be related to the wood used for the construction of showcases and furniture and the use of cleaning products. Data obtained also showed the presence of organic acids and aldehydes whose source can be traced back to exhibits themselves and wood-based furniture.
