Background: The study aimed to compare the pain-relieving effectiveness of anterior quadratus lumborum block (QLB3) and erector spinae plane block (ESPB), both of which have been documented to provide relief during abdominal surgery. Methods: This prospective observational study, conducted between February and July 2023, included 96 patients who had undergone percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Patients were divided into three groups: QLB3, ESPB, and control (no block) and received the corresponding nerve block in the preanesthetic room for regional block. Cumulative morphine consumption during the initial 24 h after PCNL, numerical rating scale resting/movement scores, intraoperative remifentanil usage, rescue analgesic requirements, time when the first analgesic was requested, and postoperative nausea and vomiting scores were documented and compared between the groups. Results: Total median morphine consumption in the first 24 h postoperatively was similar in the QLB3 and ESPB groups but higher in the control group (QLB3, 7 mg [(Q1-Q3) 7–8.5]; ESPB, 8 mg [6.5–9]; control, 12.5 [10–17]; P < 0.001). Similarly, median intraoperative remifentanil consumption did not differ between the block groups but was higher in the control group (QLB3, 1082 µg [IQR 805.5–1292.7]; ESPB, 1278 µg [940.2–1297.5]; control, 1561 µg [1315–2068]; P < 0.001). The number of patients receiving rescue analgesic medication was similar in the block groups but higher in the control group (QLB3, n = 9 [30%]; ESPB, n = 14 [46.7%]; control, n = 21 [70%]; P = 0.008). Conclusions: QLB3 and ESPB were adequate and comparable in providing postoperative analgesia as part of multimodal analgesia after PCNL. Background: Open liver resection necessitates a substantial upper abdominal inverted-L incision, resulting in severe pain and compromising patient recovery. Despite the efficacy of epidural analgesia in providing adequate postoperative analgesia, the potential epidural-related adverse effects should be carefully considered. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of continuous epidural analgesia and intravenous analgesia in open liver resection. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, collecting data from patients who underwent open liver resection between 2007 and 2017. Propensity score matching was implemented to mitigate confounding variables, with patients being matched in a 1:1 ratio based on propensity scores. The primary outcome was the comparison of postoperative morphine consumption at 24, 48, and 72 hours between the two groups. Secondary outcomes included pain scores, postoperative outcomes, and epidural-related adverse effects. Results: A total of 612 patients were included, and after matching, there were 204 patients in each group. Opioid consumption at 24, 48, and 72 hours postoperatively was statistically lower in the epidural analgesia group compared to the intravenous analgesia group (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in pain scores (p = 0.422). Additionally, perioperative hypotension requiring treatment, as well as nausea and vomiting, were significantly higher in the epidural analgesia group compared to the intravenous analgesia group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Epidural analgesia is superior to intravenous morphine in terms of reducing postoperative opioid consumption within the initial 72 h after open liver resection. Nevertheless, perioperative hypotension, which necessitates management, should be approached with consideration and vigilance. Background: The National Health Service (NHS) has pledged to reach carbon net-zero by 2040. In alignment with this goal, a London hospital's anaesthesia department is actively reducing desflurane use and transitioning towards total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) as a sustainable alternative, contributing to environmentally responsible practices within the healthcare sector. Methods: We conducted a rapid qualitative appraisal through online interviews with 17 anaesthetic practitioners to explore their perspectives regarding this climate change mitigation strategy. Data analysis was undertaken through the use of rapid appraisal sheets and a framework analysis method. Results: Participants highlighted the disadvantages of TIVA, including the increased effort, heightened monitoring requirements, operational challenges, and a lack of clinical confidence associated with its use. Despite these reservations, participants acknowledged TIVA's potential to reduce postoperative nausea. There were perceptions that senior staff members might resist this change due to habits and scepticism over its impact on climate change. To facilitate greater TIVA adoption, participants recommended enhanced training, the implementation of a dashboard to raise awareness of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the presence of strong climate change leadership within the department. Participants believed that a shift to TIVA should be followed by specific measures such as addressing waste management which is crucial for GHG reduction, emphasising the perceived link between waste and emissions. Conclusions: The evaluation examines stakeholder attitudes, perceptions, and behaviours, focusing on transitioning from desflurane to TIVA. The study highlights the importance of staff engagement, organisational support, and underscores the crucial role that healthcare practitioners and leadership play in fostering sustainability within the healthcare sector. Background: The development of postpartum depression has been linked to fluctuations in the levels of neurotransmitters in the human body, such as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (Norepinephrine, NE), and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Research has indicated that the antidepressant effect of esketamine are mediated by monoamine transmitters and neurotrophic factors. Therefore, we postulate that intravenous administration of esketamine in patients with postpartum depression may alter the serum concentrations of these neurotransmitters. Methods: Three hundred fifteen patients with postpartum depression were selected and divided into two groups based on randomized numerical expression: esketamine (E) group (0. 25 mg/kg esketamine) and control (C) group (a same volume of 0.9% saline), all the drugs were pumped for 40 min. After the end of drug pumping, all patients were continuously observed for 2 h. Changes in serum levels of 5-HT, DA, NE, BDNF were recorded before drug administration and on the 3rd day after drug administration. The scores of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were calculated before drug administration, and on the 3rd day and on the 30th day after drug administration. Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and feeling of detachment occurred were recorded within 2 h after drug administration. Background: Spinal anesthesia (SA) is a conventional method for proper nerve block in abdominopelvic and lower extremity surgeries. Compared to general anesthesia, SA has reduced perioperative complications significantly. The hyperbaric type of bupivacaine hydrochloride (HB) induces spinal anesthesia more efficiently with a lower incidence of life-threatening adverse reactions like Perioperative hemodynamic changes and respiratory depression. More investigations are needed to define the best dosage that provides adequate anesthesia while reducing adverse effects for each surgical procedure. Methods: This double-blinded randomized clinical trial compared the consequences of the (12.5mg,15mg,20mg) dosages of HB-bupivacaine in elective lower limb orthopedic surgery. Using block randomization, we allocated 60 participants to three (n = 20) study groups. Utilizing the same protocol of anesthesia induction, outcome variables assumed and measured as the incidence of the adverse effects (Hypotension, Anxiety, Bradycardia, Nausea and Vomiting(N/V), Hypoventilation, and Decreased o2 saturation), and the requirement for intervention to control the unwanted reaction. Addressing that, outcome variables were measured 10 times perioperatively. One-way ANOVA test, the chi2 test, or repeated measures ANOVA test with the Bonferroni adjustment were utilized as appropriate. Results: We found that the incidence of hypotension (P-value:0.02) and the N/V (P-value < 0.001) are associated with the HB-bupivacaine dosage. Contrary, our findings indicate that the incidence of apnea, bradycardia, and hypoventilation did not exhibit a significant dose-dependent pattern between the groups. Repeated measures analysis revealed significant intergroup differences for Herat rate, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (group*time Pvalue < 0.001). The observed differences were more prominent 10–30 min after injection of HB-bupivacaine. The regression model claimed that gender (P-value:0.002) and drug dosage (P-value:0.03) significantly predict the incidence of adverse effects. Conclusion: Our results, suggest that the administration of the 12.5mg HB-bupivacaine provides adequate anesthesia while minimizing the risk of adverse events for lower limb orthopedic surgeries lasting up to 180 min. Background: To reduce maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality, it is becoming increasingly important for anesthetists to understand and implement enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) cesarean delivery guidelines. Our aim was to reveal the knowledge of anesthesia assistants in Turkey about ERAS during cesarean delivery and to increase their awareness of ERAS. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in the city of Isparta, Turkey in 2023. The survey, which was approved by the ethics committee, was distributed to participants across Turkey via e-mail and online messages. The survey comprises of a total of 42 questions evaluating perioperative ERAS recommendations. Results: Of the 404 participants in our survey, 59.9% were associated with university hospitals and 65.8% had completed three or more years of education. A total of 87.9% of the participants were familiar with ERAS; however, only 42.8% had received ERAS training. Although 93.8% of the participants' institutions performed a cesarean delivery, ERAS recommendations were only implemented at a rate of 48%. This may be due to the absence of an ERAS team, which was identified in our survey at a high rate of 66.6%. Conclusion: Awareness about ERAS was high among the participants, but the implementation rates of some recommendations were low. The reason for this may be the inability to form a multidisciplinary team and inadequate training of participants. Background: Inhibition of 5-HT3 (5-Hydroxyl Tryptamine) receptors is known to enhance morphine analgesia in animal models. We tested the efficacy of azasetron, a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, on postoperative chronic pain after pulmonary surgery in a randomized triple-blind controlled study. Methods: A total of 250 patients who were scheduled to receive pulmonary surgery were randomized to patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) using 200 µg sufentanil with normal saline or 200 µg sufentanil with 20 mg azasetron. The numerical rating scale of pain (NRS) was recorded at baseline, postoperative day (POD) 1, 2, 3, 90, and 180. Negative binomial regression was used to identify associated factors for postoperative NRS six months after surgery. Results: The results showed that azasetron did not affect the primary outcomes: the incidence of postoperative chronic pain on POD90 and 180. However, azasetron decreased postoperative NRS at rest and activity on POD1, 2, and 3. Furthermore, azasetron decreased postoperative nausea and vomiting on POD1 and 2. Univariate and multivariate negative binomial regression analysis identified preoperative pain, smoking, drinking and open surgery are risk factors of chronic pain six months after surgery. Conclusions: Azasetron did not affect the incidence of chronic pain after pulmonary surgery. The presence of preoperative pain, smoking, drinking, and open surgery were found to be associated with chronic pain six months after surgery. Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common distressing symptoms experienced after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We report the rate, and the factors associated with postoperative nausea and vomiting, the patterns of prophylactic antiemetic prescription, and the anesthetic techniques used among patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (JDW) National Referral Hospital, Bhutan. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the JDW National Referral Hospital, from January to December 2018. All the patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia were included in the study. The demographic variables, premedication, induction agents, muscle relaxants, inhalational agents for maintenance, opioid and adjuvant analgesics, the reversal agents used, and the occurrence of PONV within 24 h were recorded. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 23). Continuous variables were compared using a t-test or Mann-Whitney test, categorical variables were tested using chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with postoperative nausea and vomiting. Results: 190 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. The rate of PONV after laparoscopic cholecystectomy was 31.1% (59/190). Over half (53.7%, 102/190) of the study population were within 21–40 years of age, over 80% (157/190) were female, and 2/3rd were overweight and obese. The most frequently used premedication was ranitidine (39%, 34/87) and metoclopramide (31%, 27/87). More than half (57.4%, 109/190) of the patients received morphine as an opioid analgesic before induction. Sodium thiopentone was a commonly used induction agent (65.8%, 125/190). Succinylcholine and atracurium were mostly preferred muscle relaxants. Isoflurane and air were the most used inhalational anesthetic agents for the maintenance of anesthesia. Ondansetron was the most preferred anti-emetics during the intraoperative period. Previous history of motion sickness (OR 5.8, 95%CI 2.9–11.2, p < 0.001), and use of sodium thiopental (OR 4.1, 95%CI 1.9–9.1, p < 0.001) were independent risk factors for PONV. The use of antiemetics (OR 0.1, 95%CI 0.0-0.4, p = 0.002), propofol (OR 0.2, 95%CI 0.1–0.5, p < 0.001), adjuvant analgesic paracetamol (OR 0.4, 95%CI 0.2–0.8, p = 0.026), and adequate hydration with IV fluids (OR 0.9, 95%CI 0.9-1.0, p = 0.042) were preventive factors for PONV. Conclusion: The rate of PONV after laparoscopic cholecystectomy was high. History of motion sickness and use of sodium thiopental for induction were independent risk factors of PONV. The use of multimodal prophylactic antiemetics was robust and superior to monotherapy in preventing PONV. Background: Data on the effectiveness of erector spinae plane block (ESPB) for patients undergoing liver surgeries is limited and inconclusive. We hereby aimed to systematically review if ESPB can provide adequate analgesia after liver surgery. Methods: PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, Embase, and gray literature were examined up to 25th April 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing ESPB with control or spinal analgesia. Results: Nine RCTs were included of which three compared ESPB with spinal analgesia. 24-hour opioid consumption did not differ significantly between ESPB vs. control (MD: -35.25 95% CI: -77.01, 6.52 I2 = 99%) or ESPB vs. spinal analgesia (MD: 2.32 95% CI: -6.12, 10.77 I2 = 91%). Comparing pain scores between ESPB and control, a small but significant effect favoring ESPB was noted at 12 h and 48 h, but not at 6–8 h and 24 h. Pain scores did not differ between ESPB and spinal analgesia. The risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting was also not significantly different between ESPB vs. control or spinal analgesia. GRADE assessment shows moderate certainty of evidence. Conclusion: ESPB may not provide any significant postoperative analgesia in liver surgery patients. There was a tendency of reduced opioid consumption with ESPB. Limited data also showed that ESPB and spinal analgesia had no difference in pain scores and 24-hour analgesic consumption. Background and Objectives: The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the long-term safety and effectiveness of lurasidone in the treatment of schizophrenia in adolescents and young adults (13–25). Methods: The 2 pooled studies used similar designs and outcome measures. Patients (13–25) with schizophrenia completed an initial double-blind 6-week trial of lurasidone (40 and 80 mg/day) in the adolescent trial and (80 and 160 mg/day) in the young adult trial. In open-label long-term trials, adolescent patients were treated with 20–80 mg/day lurasidone, and adults were treated with 40–160 mg/day lurasidone. Efficacy was evaluated based on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale (CGI-S). Results: The safety population consisted of 306 patients (mean age, 16.2 years; 208 patients (68.0%) who completed 12 months of treatment; 8.2% who discontinued treatment by 12 months due to an adverse event). The mean (SD) changes in the PANSS total score from the extension baseline to months 6 and 12 were − 11.8 (13.9) and – 15.3 (15.0), respectively (OC), and the mean (SD) changes in the CGI-S score were − 0.8 (1.0) and − 1.0 (1.1), respectively (OC). The most frequent adverse events were headache (17.6%), anxiety (11.4%), schizophrenia (9.8%), and nausea (9.8%). No clinically meaningful changes were observed in weight, metabolic parameters, or prolactin. Conclusions: In adolescents and young adults with schizophrenia, treatment with lurasidone was generally well tolerated and effective. Long-term treatment was associated with a continued reduction in symptoms of schizophrenia. Long-term treatment was associated with minimal effects on weight, metabolic parameters, and prolactin. Introduction: Thoracotomy procedures can result in significant pain and cause nausea/vomiting. Glucocorticoids have anti-emetic and analgesic effects due to their anti-inflammatory and nerve-blocking properties. This study investigates the additive effect of local dexamethasone with bupivacaine as sole analgesic medication through a peripleural catheter after thoracotomy. Method: The study was conducted as a randomized control trial on 82 patients. Participants were allocated to receive either 2.5 mg/kg of bupivacaine plus 0.2 mg/kg of dexamethasone or 2.5 mg/kg of bupivacaine plus the same amount of normal saline as placebo through a 6 French peripleural catheter implemented above the parietal pleura and beneath the musculoskeletal structure of the chest wall. The primary outcome was the severity of pain 24 h after the operation in the visual analogue scale (VAS) score. Secondary outcomes were the incidence of nausea/vomiting, opioid consumption for pain control, and incidence of any adverse effects. Results: : A total of 50 participants were randomized to each group, and the baseline characteristics were similar between the groups. Median of VAS score (6 (3-8) vs. 8 (6-9), p < 0.001), postoperative opioid consumption (9 (36%) vs. 17 (68%) patients, p=0.024), and median length of hospital stay (4 (3-8) vs. 6 (3-12) days, p < 0.001) were significantly lower in the dexamethasone group. However, postoperative nausea/vomiting (p=0.26 for nausea and p=0.71 for vomiting) and surgical site infection (p = 0.55) were similar between the two groups. Conclusion: In thoracotomy patients, administering local dexamethasone + bupivacaine through a peripleural catheter can reduce postoperative pain, analgesic consumption, and length of hospital stay. Sarcina ventriculi is a bacterium with a specific histological morphology and infection can present with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and occasionally fatal complications. Delayed gastric emptying is regarded as the most significant risk factor for infection. Its pathogenicity is currently unknown and treatment options are inconsistent. Background: This retrospective clinical study was undertaken to comparatively evaluate the number of restorative treatments, endodontic treatments, and tooth extractions performed for patients under general anesthesia due to dental anxiety or special needs between 2015 and 2022 and to examine the pain, bleeding, nausea, and vomiting data of those patients. Methods: In total, 1165 patients underwent dental treatment under general anesthesia in the faculty hospital. Those under the age of 15 and with no endodontic procedure planned (n = 918) were excluded, followed by those with incomplete data (n = 25) and those without endodontic treatment (n = 25). Patients who underwent at least one endodontic treatment were finally included in the study (n = 184). Patients were divided into two groups: healthy and with special needs. Dental treatments were recorded as endodontic, restorative, and teeth extractions. Endodontic treatments were classified according to the tooth type (premolar, molar, and incisors). The composite restorations were classified as anterior, occlusal (O), occluso-distal (OD) or occluso-mesial (OM), and mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) restorations and patients' post-treatment pain, nausea, vomiting, and bleeding were recorded. The data were analyzed statistically. Results: Among the 184 patients included in the study, 70 (38%) were healthy, and 114 (62%) had special needs. Postoperative bleeding was observed more in patients with special needs (χ2 = 4.189, p < 0.05), whereas pain was observed more in healthy patients (U = 2922.00, p < 0.05). While the number of anterior, O, and MOD restorations was higher in patients with special needs, the number of OD or OM restorations was higher in healthy patients (χ2 = 74.877, p < 0.05). Conclusions: Patients with special needs undergo a greater number of restorative treatments compared to control patients, which may be associated with the inadequate oral hygiene care of such patients. However, restorative treatment is mostly indicated for such patients in our faculty hospital, which may indicate that a conservative approach is taken. Additionally, the finding that postoperative bleeding was more severe in this group of patients compared to the control group in this study may emphasize the need to consider more possible complications after general anesthesia in these patients. Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a significant problem following paediatric surgery, and volatile anaesthetics are an important cause of this phenomenon. BIS-guided anaesthesia, by reducing the consumption of anaesthetics, leads to a decrease in PONV in adult patients. Study objective: Evaluate the role of BIS-guided anaesthesia in reducing the incidence of paediatric PONV. Design: Prospective, randomized, double-blind study. Setting: A single center study in university hospital in Czech republic, from June 2021 to November 2022. Patients: A total of 163 children, aged 3–8 years with ASA I-II who underwent endoscopic adenoidectomy under general anaesthesia were included. Interventions: In the intervention group, the depth of anaesthesia was maintained to values between 40 and 60 of BIS. Main outcome measure: The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting during 24 h after surgery. Results: The use of BIS-guided anaesthesia led to a significant decrease in the incidence of nausea and vomiting compared to the control group [17% vs. 53%; RR (95%CI) 0.48 (0.27–0.86); p < 0.001and 16% vs. 34%; RR (95%CI) 0.33 (0.20–0.54); p = 0.01, respectively]. Background and objectives: Considering the significant prevalence of ileus after abdominal surgery and the beneficial effects of Cuminum cyminum in digestive problems, this study aimed to examine whether Cuminum cyminum has any effect on the return of bowel motility after abdominal surgery. Materials and methods: In this triple-blind clinical trial study, 74 patients undergoing abdominal surgery were assigned to the intervention and control groups using minimization methods. The patients in the intervention group consumed 250 mg capsules containing Cuminum cyminum extract 4 h after the surgery and another dose of the drug 1 h afterward. The patients in the control group consumed a 250 mg capsule containing starch as a placebo at hours similar to those in the intervention group. The instruments used to collect the data were a demographic questionnaire and a researcher-made checklist to assess bowel habits. The data were analyzed using SPSS-22 software. Results: The average time of gas passing in the intervention and control groups was 9.03 ± 3.41 and 11.72 ± 4.21 h, respectively. The defecation times in the intervention and control groups were 16.97 ± 5.02 and 26 ± 9.87 h, showing a significant difference between the two groups as indicated by the independent samples T-test (P > 0.001). Furthermore, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, nausea, and vomiting were significantly less frequent in the intervention group compared to the control group as confirmed by Fisher's exact test (P > 0.001). Conclusion: According to the results, the consumption of Cuminum cyminum after abdominal surgery helps to reduce the time of gas passing, defecation, and the return of bowel motility. Background: Intra-operative anaesthesia management should be optimised to reduce the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in high-risk patients; however, a single intervention may not effectively reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting in such patients. This study assessed the effect of an optimised anaesthetic protocol versus a conventional one on postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Methods: A single-centre randomised trial was conducted at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital from June 2021 to December 2022. Among 168 patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, 116 qualified, and 103 completed the study with available data. Patients were categorized into the conventional group (received sevoflurane and standard fluids) and the optimised group (underwent propofol-based anaesthesia and was administered goal-directed fluids). The primary endpoints were postoperative nausea and vomiting incidence and severity within 24 h. Results: Postoperative nausea and vomiting assessment at 0–3 h post-surgery revealed no significant differences between groups. However, at 3–24 h, the optimised anaesthetic protocol group showed lower postoperative nausea and vomiting incidence and severity than those of the conventional group (P = 0.005). In the conventional group, 20 (37.04%) patients experienced moderate-to-severe postoperative nausea and vomiting, compared to six (12.25%) patients in the optimised group (odds ratio = 0.237; 95% CI = 0.086, 0.656; P = 0.006). No significant differences were noted in antiemetic treatment, moderate-to-severe pain incidence, anaesthesia recovery, post-anaesthetic care unit stay, or postoperative duration between the groups. While the total intra-operative infusion volumes were comparable, the optimised group had a significantly higher colloidal infusion volume (500 mL vs. 0 mL, P = 0.014) than that of the conventional group. Conclusions: The incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting 3–24 h postoperatively in patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were significantly lower with propofol-based total intravenous anaesthesia and goal-directed fluid therapy than with sevoflurane anaesthesia and traditional fluid management. Background: Although China has a long history of using insects as food and medicine and has developed numerous associated knowledge and practices, especially in its rural and mountainous areas, systematic surveys concerning this subject are limited. In-depth ethnobiological research is needed to compile a comprehensive database of edible and medicinal insects and record the associated knowledge of these food and medicinal resources. Methods: Data on edible and medicinal insects and associated knowledge about them were collected by interviewing 216 local villagers in a mountainous territory in southeast Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Results: Local villagers used at least 16 edible and 9 medicinal insects, of which 4 wasp species were used in both entomophagy and medicinal practices. Parapolybia varia, Polistes olivaceus, and Anomala chamaeleon were newly recorded edible insects in China. The wasps, Euconocephalus sp., Gryllotalpa orientalis, and Cyrtotrachelus longimanus, were preferred and culturally important edible insects. Populations of Euconocephalus sp. and G. orientalis were reported to have substantially decreased in recent years. Wasps and a bamboo bee were used to treat rheumatism, while cockroaches and antlions were used to treat common cold symptoms in infants. Insect-related knowledge was positively correlated with the interviewees' age. Conclusions: Villagers have accumulated considerable local and traditional knowledge of entomophagy and entomo-therapeutic practices. However, this knowledge is in danger of being lost, which highlights the urgent need to document this information. Edible insects enrich local diets, and a more sustainable supply (such as through insect farming) could maintain local entomophagy practices. Medicinal insects are a part of local folk medicine, and pharmacological and chemical techniques could be applied to identify various biologically active substances in these insects. Background: The Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) reduces postoperative pain after several types of abdominal laparoscopic surgeries. There is sparse data on the effect of ESPB in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. The purpose of this study was to test the postoperative analgesic efficacy of an ESPB for this procedure. Methods: In this prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled study, adult patients undergoing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair were randomly assigned to either bilateral preoperative ESPB with catheters at the level of Th7 (2 × 30 ml of either 2.5 mg/ml ropivacaine or saline), with postoperative catheter top ups every 6 h for 24 h. The primary outcome was rescue opioid consumption during the first hour postoperatively. Secondary outcomes were total opioid consumption at 4 h and 24 h, pain scores, nausea, sedation, as well as Quality of Recovery 15 (QoR-15) and the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D-5L) during the first week. Results: In total, 64 patients were included in the primary outcome measure. There was no significant difference in rescue opioid consumption (oral morphine equivalents (OME)) at one hour postoperatively, with the ESPB group 26.9 ± 17.1 mg versus 32.4 ± 24.3 mg (mean ± SD) in the placebo group (p= 0.27). There were no significant differences concerning the secondary outcomes during the seven-day observation period. Seven patients received a rescue block postoperatively, providing analgesia in five patients. Conclusion: We found no difference in measured outcomes between ESPB and placebo in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. Background: Patients with iron deficiency anemia are treated with iron preparations, but gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting occur frequently. These symptoms may negatively affect the quality of life and work productivity in patients with iron deficiency anemia. This study assessed the impact of nausea and vomiting on the quality of life and work productivity of patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Methods: An online survey was conducted among patients taking iron preparations for heavy menstrual bleeding or anemia. Demographic data and information about medication use and the health condition were collected. The patients were asked to answer the 5-level EQ-5D version, and work productivity and activity impairment questionnaires. The outcomes were reported by patients in the presences of nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting. The association with the 5-level EQ-5D version utility score for the severity and frequency of the symptoms were also assessed. Results: A total of 385 patients were enrolled, and 96 were patients with nausea or vomiting, of which 94 were with nausea and 27 were with vomiting. The 5-level EQ-5D version utility scores for the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly lower than those of the patients without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The 5-level EQ-5D version utility score was correlated with the severity of nausea and the frequency of vomiting per day (p < 0.001 for each). As for the work productivity and activity impairment, the presenteeism, the overall work impairment, and the activity impairment of the patients with nausea, vomiting, and nausea or vomiting were significantly higher than those without these symptoms (p < 0.001 for each). The absenteeism was slightly higher trend was observed, but not significant. Conclusion: Patients taking iron preparations who have nausea or vomiting experience a significant burden in terms of poorer quality of life and higher work productivity impairment. Background: Although the efficacy and safety of epidural block (EB) are fairly high, complications such as inadvertent dural puncture may limit its use. Ultrasound-guided quadratus lumborum block (QLB) is a relatively new regional technique that provides perioperative somatic and visceral analgesia for pediatric patients. This trial compared the quality of pain relief in pediatric patients undergoing abdominal surgery who received either QLB or EB. Methods: Patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups: Group E(n = 29): received EB; Group QL(n = 29): received QLB. Both groups were injected with 0.25% bupivacaine (0.5 ml/kg). Assessment of total analgesia consumption was the primary outcome measure, whereas the secondary outcome measures were assessment of postoperative analgesic effect by Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Pain Scale (CHEOPS) and time of first analgesic request. Results: Our study showed that the mean total fentanyl consumption was comparable between both groups(38.67 ± 5.02 and 36.47 ± 5.13 µg in the E and QL groups, respectively, P = 0.246). Only five patients did not require rescue analgesia (3 in the E group,2 in the QL group, P = 0.378). The mean duration of analgesia showed no significant difference between the two groups (9.9 ± 1.58 and 11.02 ± 1.74 h in the E and QL groups, respectively, P = 0.212). Evaluation of CHEOPS score values immediately in PACU and for the initial 24 h following operation showed no significant difference between the two study groups(P > 0.05). Background: Regional analgesia techniques are crucial for pain management after cervical spine surgeries. Anesthesiologists strive to select the most effective and least hazardous regional analgesia technique for the cervical region. Our hypothesis is that an intermediate cervical plexus (IC) block can provide adequate postoperative analgesia compared to a cervical erector spinae (ES) block in patients undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery. Methods: In this double-blind prospective trial, 58 patients were randomly assigned into two equal groups prior to the administration of general anesthesia. Patients in the IC group (n = 29) underwent ultrasound-guided bilateral intermediate cervical plexus block with 15 ml of bupivacaine 0.25% administered to each side. The ES group (n = 29) underwent ultrasound-guided bilateral cervical erector spinae plane blocks with 15 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine administered to each side at the C6 level. The primary outcome was to record the time to the first call for rescue analgesia (nalbuphine), and the secondary outcomes were to measure the performance time, the onset of the sensory block, the intraoperative fentanyl consumption, postoperative pain intensity using VAS, the postoperative total nalbuphine consumption, and postoperative complications such as nausea, vomiting, hypotension, and bradycardia. Results: The performance and onset of sensory block times were significantly shorter in the IC group compared to the ES group. The time to first call for nalbuphine was significantly shorter in the IC group (7.31 ± 1.34 h) compared to the ES group (11.10 ± 1.82 h). The mean postoperative VAS scores were comparable between the two groups at the measured time points, except at 8 h, where it was significantly higher in the IC group, and at 12 h, where it was significantly higher in the ES group. The total nalbuphine consumption was significantly higher in the IC group (33.1 ± 10.13 mg) compared to the ES group (22.76 ± 8.62 mg). Conclusions: For patients undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery, the intermediate cervical plexus block does not provide better postoperative regional analgesia compared to the cervical erector spinae block. Background: General anesthesia is often necessary for dental treatment of outpatients with mental disabilities. Rapid recovery and effective management of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are critical for outpatients. This study aimed to investigate the effect of transitioning from propofol to remimazolam with flumazenil reversal administered toward the end of surgery during propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on recovery. Methods: Adults with mental disabilities scheduled to undergo dental treatment were randomly assigned to receive either propofol-based TIVA (Group P) or propofol-remimazolam-based TIVA with flumazenil reversal (Group PR). Propofol was replaced with remimazolam 1 h before the end of surgery in Group PR; moreover, 0.5 mg of flumazenil was administered after the neuromuscular blockade reversal agent. The primary outcome was the duration of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The secondary outcomes included time to eye-opening, time to extubation, occurrence of PONV, and quality of recovery. Results: Fifty-four patients were included in this study. The duration of stay in the PACU in Group PR was significantly shorter than that in Group P (mean difference, 8.7 min; confidence interval [95% CI], 3.3–14.2; P = 0.002). Group PR exhibited a shorter time to eye opening (mean difference, 5.4 min; 95% CI, 3.3–8.1; P < 0.001) and time to extubation (mean difference, 5.5 min; 95% CI, 3.6–7.9; P < 0.001) than Group P. Neither group required the administration of rescue analgesics, and the incidence of PONV was not reported. Conclusions: Transitioning from propofol to remimazolam 1 h before the end of surgery followed by flumazenil reversal reduced the duration of stay in the PACU and the time to eye opening and extubation without affecting the incidence of PONV and quality of recovery. Objective: The aim of this study is to observe the anesthetic effect and safety of intravenous anesthesia without muscle relaxant with propofol-remifentanil combined with regional block under laryngeal mask airway in pediatric ophthalmologic surgery. Methods: A total of 90 undergoing ophthalmic surgery were anesthetized with general anesthesia using the laryngeal mask airway without muscle relaxant. They were randomly divided into two groups: 45 children who received propofol-remifentanil intravenous anesthesia combined with regional block (LG group), and 45 children who received total intravenous anesthesia (G group). The peri-operative circulatory indicators, awakening time after general anesthesia, postoperative analgesic effect and the incidence of anesthesia-related adverse events were respectively compared between the two groups. Results: All the children successfully underwent the surgical procedure. The awakening time after general anesthesia and removal time of laryngeal mask were significantly shorter in the LG group than in the G group (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the heart rates in the perioperative period between the two groups (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of intraoperative physical response, respiratory depression, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and emergence agitation (EA) between the two groups (P > 0.05). The pain score at the postoperative hour 2 was lower in the LG group than in the G group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Propofol-remifentanil intravenous anesthesia combined with long-acting local anesthetic regional block anesthesia, combined with laryngeal mask ventilation technology without muscle relaxants, can be safely used in pediatric eye surgery to achieve rapid and smooth recovery from general anesthesia and better postoperative analgesia. Background: An increasing number of individuals undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which can result in pain, limited motor function and adverse complications such as infection, nausea and vomiting. Glucocorticoids have been shown anti-inflammatory and antiemetic effects, but can also elevate blood glucose levels and increase the risk of wound infection. Thus, it is essential to investigate the efficacy and safety of glucocorticoid usage in TKA. Method: A comprehensive systematic search of PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane databases, to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of glucocorticoid application in TKA. The primary outcomes assessed were the postoperative pain assessment. Secondary outcomes included the range of motion in knee joint, levels of inflammatory cytokines, adverse complications, and the length of hospital stay. Results: Thirty-six randomized controlled trials were included in the final analysis. The glucocorticoid group exhibited significant reduction in the resting VAS scores on postoperative days 1, 2 (POD1, 2)and postoperative 3 months (POM3), as well as decreased morphine consumption on POD1 and increased range of motion (ROM) in knee joint on POD1, 3. Additionally, the glucocorticoid group exhibited decreased levels of postoperative inflammatory cytokines and the incidence of PONV along with a shorter length of hospital stay. The blood glucose concentration was significantly increased in the glucocorticoid group on POD1 compared with the control group. While the blood glucose on POD2 and occurrence of postoperative adverse complications were similar between two groups including wound infection and venous thrombosis. The periarticular injection analgesia (PIA) group demonstrated lower VAS scores on POD2 comparing to the systemic administration (SA) group according to two studies. However, there was no significant difference of the resting VAS on POD1 and POD2 between PIA and SA group across all studies. Conclusion: Perioperative glucocorticoids treatment in TKA significantly reduced short-term pain score and opioid-use which was probably not patient relevant. The application of glucocorticoids in TKA implied a beneficial trend in analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antiemetic effects, as well as improved range of motion and shortened hospital stay. Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common adverse events in cancer patients and can negatively affect their quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of an electric massage chair (EMC) for the treatment of CINV. Methods: A randomized phase II cross-over trial was conducted on solid cancer patients who received moderate (MEC) to high emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC). The participants were randomly assigned to receive their first chemotherapy either on a standard bed (Group A) or in an EMC (Group B) during the infusion. The patients were then crossed over to the next cycle. CINV and QoL questionnaires were collected from the participants. Results: A total of 59 patients completed the trial protocol and were included in the analysis, with 29 and 30 patients in Groups A and B, respectively. The mean INVR (Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching) score in the 2nd day of the first cycle was higher in Group B (3.63 ± 5.35) than Group A (2.76 ± 4.78), but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.5367). The complete response rate showed little difference between the groups. Among the high-emetic risk subgroups, patients who received HEC (p = 0.04595), younger patients (p = 0.0108), and non-colorectal cancer patients (p = 0.0495) presented significantly lower CINV scores when EMC was applied. Conclusion: Overall, there was no significant difference in INVR scores between standard care and EMC. Background: Early water intake has gained widespread attention considering enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). In the present systematic evaluation and meta-analysis, we assessed the effects of early water intake on the incidence of vomiting and aspiration in adult patients who received general anaesthesia on regaining consciousness during the resuscitation period. Objective: To systematically analyse the results of randomised controlled trials on early postoperative water intake in patients who underwent different types of surgery under general anaesthesia, both at home and abroad, to further explore the safety and application of early water intake and provide an evidence-based foundation for clinical application. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: To perform the systematic evaluation and meta-analysis, we searched the Web of Science, CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Sinomed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and Vipshop databases to identify randomised controlled trial studies on early water intake in adult patients who received general anaesthesia. Results: Herein, we included 10 publications with a total sample size of 5131 patients. Based on statistical analysis, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of vomiting (odds ratio [OR] = 0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.58–1.12]; p = 0.20; I-squared [I2] = 0%) and aspiration (OR = 0.78; 95%CI [0.45–1.37]; p = 0.40; I2 = 0%) between the two groups of patients on regaining consciousness post-general anaesthesia. Conclusion: Based on the available evidence, early water intake after regaining consciousness post-anaesthesia did not increase the incidence of adverse complications when compared with traditional postoperative water abstinence. Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the most common adverse events following orthognathic surgery. It's a distressing feeling for patients and continues to be the cause of postoperative complications such as bleeding, delayed healing, and wound infection. This scoping review aims to identify effective PONV prophylaxis strategies during orthognathic surgery that have emerged in the past 15 years. Methods: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials, and Embase from 2008 to May 2023. Studies meeting the following criteria were eligible for inclusion: (1) recruited patients undergo any orthognathic surgery; (2) evaluated any pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic method to prevent PONV. Studies meeting the following criteria were excluded: (1) case series, review papers, or retrospective studies; (2) did not report our prespecified outcomes. Results: Twenty-one studies were included in this review. Pharmacological methods for PONV prevention include ondansetron and dexamethasone (3 studies), peripheral nerve block technique (4 studies), dexmedetomidine (1 study), pregabalin (2 studies), nefopam (2 studies), remifentanil (1 study), propofol (2 studies), and penehyclidine (1 study). Non-pharmacologic methods include capsicum plaster (1 study), throat packs (2 studies) and gastric aspiration (2 studies). Conclusions: Based on current evidence, we conclude that prophylactic antiemetics like dexamethasone, ondansetron, and penehyclidine are the first defense against PONV. Multimodal analgesia with nerve block techniques and non-opioid analgesics should be considered due to their notable opioid-sparing and PONV preventive effect. For the non-pharmacological methods, throat packs are not recommended for routine use because of their poor effect and serious complications. Background: Deep neuromuscular block (NMB) has been shown to improve surgical conditions and alleviate post-operative pain in bariatric surgery compared with moderate NMB. We hypothesized that deep NMB could also improve the quality of early recovery after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Methods: Eighty patients were randomized to receive either deep (post-tetanic count 1–3) or moderate (train-of-four count 1–3) NMB. The QoR-15 questionnaire was used to evaluate the quality of early recovery at 1 day before surgery (T0), 24 and 48 h after surgery (T2, T3). Additionally, we recorded diaphragm excursion (DE), postoperative pain, surgical condition, cumulative dose of analgesics, time of first flatus and ambulation, post-operative nausea and vomiting, time of tracheal tube removal and hospitalization time. Main results: The quality of recovery was significantly better 24 h after surgery in patients who received a deep versus moderate block (114.4 ± 12.9 versus 102.1 ± 18.1). Diaphragm excursion was significantly greater in the deep NMB group when patients performed maximal inspiration at T2 and T3 (P < 0.05). Patients who underwent deep NMB reported lower visceral pain scores 40 min after surgery; additionally, these patients experienced lower pain during movement at T3 (P < 0.05). Optimal surgical conditions were rated in 87.5% and 64.6% of all measurements during deep and moderate NMB respectively (P < 0.001). The time to tracheal tube removal was significantly longer in the deep NMB group (P = 0.001). There were no differences in other outcomes. Conclusion: In obese patients receiving deep NMB during LSG, we observed improved QoR-15 scores, greater diaphragmatic excursions, improved surgical conditions, and visceral pain scores were lower. Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common postoperative complication, and Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block can provide effective analgesia for surgical operation. However, but there is not enough evidence to prove its advantage for nausea and vomiting. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy of TAP block on PONV. Methods: Two independent researchers conducted searches for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. We used Review Manager software for meta-analysis. Results: In this meta-analysis, twenty-six trials with 1981 patients were examined. The results showed that TAP block reduced postoperative nausea (Risk Difference (RD) = -0.10, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.15 to -0.05) compared with no TAP block. TAP block reduced the dose of fentanyl (Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) = -1.17, 95% CI: -2.07 to -0.26) and morphine (SMD = -1.12, 95% CI: -2.10 to -0.13) compared with no TAP block, when the timing of administration was before surgery (RD = -0.13, 95% CI: -0.19 to -0.07). TAP block reduced postoperative nausea when the ropivacaine dosage is ≤ 100 mg (RD = -0.13, 95% CI: -0.21 to -0.06), bupivacaine dosage ≥ 100 mg (RD = -0.08, 95% CI: -0.13 to -0.03), and when the ropivacaine concentration was ≤ 0.375% (RD = -0.11, 95% CI: -0.18 to -0.04). TAP block significantly reduced the incidence of nausea when the types of opioid drugs in PCA is tramadol (RD = -0.13, 95% CI: -0.24 to -0.03). TAP block could reduce the VAS (SMD= -0.99, 95% CI: -1.29 to -0.70) and reduce the time of extubation (SMD = -0.71, 95% CI: -1.34 to -0.08). Background: Flash visual evoked potential (FVEP) is a critical method for monitoring intraoperative visual function during neurosurgery. A new benzodiazepine drug called remimazolam has recently been used for general anesthesia. However, the impact of remimazolam on FVEP remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate how remimazolam, in comparison to propofol, when combined with 0.6% sevoflurane anesthesia, affects the FVEP waveform during pituitary adenoma resection. Methods: Overall, 36 patients undergoing pituitary adenoma resection under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to either the remimazolam group (Group R) or the propofol group (Group P) in a prospective, randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial. For anesthesia induction, a bolus of 0.2 mg/kg remimazolam or 2 mg/kg propofol was intravenously infused for approximately one minute. The anesthesia was maintained by continuous infusion of either remimazolam (0.7-1.0 mg/kg/h) or propofol (4–6 mg/kg/h), in combination with 0.6% sevoflurane, aimed at sustaining the bispectral index (BIS) within the range of 40–60. The primary outcome was the N75-P100 amplitude of FVEP recorded at approximately 20 min after intubation (T0). 10% of the amplitude at T0 in group P was defined as the non-inferiority margin (δ). Confidence interval testing was used to evaluate the non-inferiority hypothesis. The secondary outcomes covered the P100 latency of FVEP, electroretinogram (ERG) b wave amplitude, demographic characteristics, hemodynamics, and occurrence of adverse events. Results: The BIS index during anesthesia was comparable between the groups at the same measured time points (P > 0.05). The N75-P100 amplitude at T0 in group R was 7.64 ± 1.36 µV, while it was 6.96 ± 0.95 µV in group P (P = 0.09), with a mean difference of 0.68 µV (95% CI, -0.11 µV to 1.48 µV). The δ was set at 0.7 and the lower limit of the 95% CI exceeded the -δ. Both remimazolam and propofol had little effect on ERG b-wave amplitudes. At the designated time points, FVEP amplitude and P100 latency displayed no appreciable variation between the two groups (P > 0.05). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the incidence of adverse events related to anesthesia, needle electrodes, or surgery between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that remimazolam-0.6% sevoflurane is non-inferior to propofol-0.6% sevoflurane for general anesthesia, based on the FVEP N75-P100 amplitude. The electrophysiological data obtained in both groups indicate that reproducible and stable FVEP and ERG waveforms can be acquired at set time points. Therefore, for reliable FVEP monitoring, remimazolam-0.6% sevoflurane appears to be a safe and effective protocol in general anesthesia. Background: Postoperative pain is common in pediatric urological surgery. The study assess the impact of perioperative intravenous infusion of low-dose esketamine on postoperative pain in pediatric urological surgery. Methods: Pediatric patients (n = 80) undergoing urological surgery were randomized into four groups. Patients in the control group were administered an analgesic pump containing only hydromorphone at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg (Hydromorphone Group 1, H1) or 0.15 mg/kg (Hydromorphone Group 2, H2). Patients in the experimental group were injected intravenously with 0.3 mg/kg of esketamine (Esketamine group 1, ES1) or equal volume of saline (Esketamine Group 2, ES2) during anesthesia induction. Esketamine 1.0 mg/kg and hydromorphone 0.1 mg/kg were added to the analgesic pump. Face, Leg, Activity, Crying, and Comfort (FLACC) scale or the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and adverse effects were recorded at 2, 6, 24, and 48 h postoperatively. Additionally, total and effective PCA button presses were recorded. Results: In comparison to the H1 group, the pain scores were notably reduced at all postoperative time points in both the ES1 and H2 groups. The ES2 group exhibited lower pain scores only at 24 and 48 h postoperatively. When compared to the H2 group, there were no significant differences in pain scores at various postoperative time points in the ES2 group. However, the ES1 group demonstrated significantly lower pain scores at 6, 24 and 48 h postoperatively, and these scores were also significantly lower than those observed in the ES2 group. The total and effective number of PCA button presses in the ES1, ES2 and H2 group were lower than that in the H1 group (P < 0.001). The incidence of adverse effects within 48 h after surgery was 15% in ES1, 22% in ES2, 58% in H1, and 42% in H2, respectively (P = 0.021). Conclusions: The use of low-dose esketamine infusion in analgesia pump can effectively alleviates postoperative pain in pediatric urological patients, leading to a significant reduction in the number of analgesic pump button press. The combined approach of perioperative anesthesia induction and analgesia pump administration is recommended for optimal pain management in these patients. Background: Esketamine, recognized for its analgesic, sedative, and anti-inflammatory qualities, is integral in multimodal analgesia. However, the potential opioid-sparing effects of intravenous esketamine, along with its impact on inflammatory responses, and cognitive function during laparoscopic surgery, remain unexplored. Methods: In this study, 90 patients scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy were equally randomized into three groups: a normal saline control group (NS), a low-dose esketamine group (LS) and a high-dose esketamine group (HS). Subsequently, we monitored several parameters: hemodynamics, levels of stress and inflammatory responses, intraoperative doses of sufentanil, remifentanil, and propofol, and 24-hour postoperative sufentanil requirements. We also evaluated alterations in cognitive function, perioperative indicators, and potential adverse reactions among the three groups. Results: Compared to their levels 5 minutes prior to anesthesia (T0) and 30 minutes post-operation (T4), the NS group exhibited a more significant decrease in Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) and Heart Rate (HR) at various time intervals: 5 minutes after the skin incision (T1), 30 minutes post-incision (T2), and at the conclusion of the operation (T3), compared to the LS and HS groups(P < 0.05). Furthermore, the NS group exhibited a greater increase in levels of adrenaline (AD), noradrenaline (NE), endothelin (ET), C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) at T1, T2, and T3, more so than the other two groups(P < 0.05). 24 hours after the surgery, patients in the LS group and HS group had significantly higher Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores than those in the NS group(P < 0.05). The LS and HS groups required lower doses of propofol, remifentanil, and sufentanil during surgery (P < 0.05), experienced shorter postoperative recovery times, and had lower incidences of nausea, vomiting, and respiratory depression compared to the NS group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The administration of low-dose esketamine has been shown to be safe, effective, and dependable in the context of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. It has the capacity to stabilize hemodynamic responses, ameliorate both stress and inflammatory reactions from surgery, and hastens anesthesia recovery. Furthermore, it fosters the restoration of postoperative cognitive function. Notably, when combined with nalbuphine, it exhibits opioid-sparing effects, reducing postoperative adverse outcomes. Objective: To investigate the analgesic effect of esketamine combined with low-dose sufentanil in elderly patients after gastrointestinal surgery, and whether the anti-inflammatory effect of esketamine is involved in the mechanism of postoperative delirium. Method: We enrolled sixty elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years old, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade I-III) who underwent gastrointestinal surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to Group C (control group) who received sufentanil 2 ug/kg, and Group E (experimental group) who received sufentanil 1.5 ug/kg + esketamine 1 mg/kg, with 30 patients in each group. All patients underwent total intravenous anesthesia during the surgery and were connected to a patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) pump after surgery. The primary outcome was the evaluation of pain at 4, 24, 48 h after surgery which was evaluated by NRS scores. In secondary outcomes, inflammation was assessed by measuring IL-6 levels using ELISA. The postoperative delirium and the occurrence of adverse reactions were observed on the 1st and 3rd day after surgery. Results: The NRS scores at 4, 24, and 48 h after surgery in the experimental group [(4.53 ± 1.22), (3.46 ± 0.73), (1.37 ± 0.99)] were lower than that in the control group [(5.23 ± 1.16), (4.46 ± 0.77), (2.13 ± 0.78)] (P < 0.05). The concentration of serum IL-6 in the experimental group at 24 and 48 h after operation [(15.96 ± 4.65), (11.8 ± 3.24)] were lower than that in the control group [(23.07 ± 4.86), (15.41 ± 4.01)] (P < 0.05); the incidence of postoperative delirium in the experimental group was less than that in the control group (P < 0.05); there was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting between the two groups (P > 0.05), and neither group had nightmares or delirium. Background: This meta-analysis was designed to compare the safety and efficiency of remimazolam with those of propofol in patients undergoing gastroscope sedation. Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Ovid, Wanfang Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SINOMED, and ClinicalTrials.gov for studies that reported on remimazolam versus propofol for gastroscope sedation from establishment to February 25, 2023. The sedative efficiency and the incidence of adverse events were assessed as outcomes. Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Review Manager 5.4 and STATA 17 were used to perform all statistical analyses. Results: A total of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 3,641 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that remimazolam had a significantly lower incidence of respiratory depression (risk ratio [RR] = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.28–0.57; p < 0.01, GRADE high), hypoxemia (RR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.23–0.49; p < 0.01, GRADE high), bradycardia (RR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.23–0.51; p < 0.01, GRADE high), dizziness (RR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.31–0.65; p < 0.01, GRADE high), injection site pain (RR = 0.06, 95% CI: 0.03–0.13; p < 0.01, GRADE high), nausea or vomiting (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.62–1.00; p = 0.05, GRADE moderate), and hypotension (RR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.26–0.48; p < 0.01, GRADE low). Background: Sensitive gag reflexes prevent dental patients from receiving appropriate treatment. Aromatherapy helps patients relax during dental procedures. However, the effect of aromatherapy on the gag reflex caused by the stimulation of the oral cavity is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate whether aromatherapy reduces gag reflexes during oral stimulation. Methods: In this randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind, crossover study, the gag reflexes of 24 healthy individuals (12 females and 12 males; mean age: 34.3 ± 9.5 years) were quantified. A standard saliva ejector was slowly guided down the participant's throat to determine the maximum tolerance of the gag reflex, and the insertion distance was measured to quantify the gag reflex. All individuals participated in an aromatherapy session with peppermint essential oil and a placebo session with distilled water. The gag reflex was quantified before (baseline) and after each session. Another measurement was performed using nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as a positive control. Results: Gag reflex values significantly increased after aromatherapy with both peppermint essential oil and placebo compared to baseline values (paired t-test, P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). The gag reflex value also increased significantly during nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation (paired t-test, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the increase rate of gag reflex values between the positive control and aromatherapy interventions, but it was significantly lower after the placebo intervention (repeated measures analysis of variance, P = 0.003; post-hoc test, P = 0.83 and P = 0.02). Conclusion: Aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil has the potential for reducing gag reflex during dental procedures. Background: Ambulatory surgery is often followed by the development of nausea and/or vomiting (N/V). Although risk factors for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are frequently discussed, the distinction between PONV and postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV) is unclear. This is especially troublesome given the potential consequences of postdischarge nausea and vomiting (PDNV), which include major discomfort and hospital readmission. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data from 10,231 adult patients undergoing ambulatory ophthalmology or otolaryngology procedures with general anesthesia were collected and analyzed. Binary and multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the association between patient and anesthetic characteristics (including age, body mass index (BMI), American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA P/S) classification, current smoker status, and intra- and postoperative opioid usage) and the odds ratios of experiencing only PDNV, only PONV, or both PONV and PDNV, as compared to not experiencing N/V at all. Results: We found that 17.8% of all patients developed N/V (PONV and/or PDNV). Patients who experienced PONV had a 2.79 (95% confidence interval 2.24–3.46) times greater risk of reporting PDNV. Binary logistic regression found that younger age, opioid use, and female sex were associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing any N/V. Increased use of nitrous oxide and a higher ASA P/S class was associated with elevated likelihood of PONV, but not PDNV or PONV plus PDNV. Conclusions: Patients experiencing N/V in the PACU are observed to develop PDNV disproportionately by a factor of 2.79. Background: During arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR), clear surgical field visibility (SFV) is the basis of successful surgery, but the choice of anesthesia maintenance drugs may have different effects on SFV. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of propofol- and sevoflurane-based general anesthesia on SFV in patients undergoing ARCR. Methods: Patients (n = 130) undergoing elective ARCR in the lateral decubitus position were randomized into either the propofol group or sevoflurane group (65 per group). The duration of surgery and increased pressure irrigation (IPI), Boezaart score, rocuronium consumption and usage of remifentanil were recorded. The time of both spontaneous respiration recovery and extubation and the incidences of postoperative nausea and vomiting and agitation were also recorded. Results: The Boezaart score, duration of IPI and ratio of the duration of IPI to the duration of surgery (IPI/S ratio) were similar between the groups (P > 0.05). Rocuronium consumption, number of patients requiring remifentanil infusion and total remifentanil consumption were significantly lower in the sevoflurane group (P < 0.05). The spontaneous respiration recovery time was significantly longer in the propofol group (P < 0.05), but there were no differences in the extubation time between the groups(P > 0.05). Conclusions: Compared with propofol, sevoflurane provides equally clear SFV while improving the convenience of anesthesia maintenance in ARCR patients with interscalene plexus (ISB) combined with general anesthesia. Background: Cleft palate repair surgery may result in severe pain in the immediate postoperative period. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of different doses of nalbuphine for postoperative analgesia in children with cleft palate. Methods: From November 2019 to June 2021, 90 children (45 males and 45 females, age 9–20 months old, ASA class I—II) were selected for palatoplasty. They were randomly divided into three groups: the control group (Group C), the N1 group (postoperative analgesia with 0.05 mg/kg/h nalbuphine) and the N2 group (postoperative analgesia with 0.075 mg/kg/h nalbuphine). Each group had 30 cases. Nalbuphine was not continuously infused in Group C but was continuously infused in Groups N1 and N2 at rates of 0.05 mg/kg/h and 0.075 mg/kg/h, respectively, for 24 h for postoperative analgesia. The FLACC analgesia score and Ramsay Sedation score were recorded at 10 min (T1), 30 min (T2), 2 h (T3), 12 h (T4) and 24 h (T5) after the operation. Adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting and respiratory depression were observed and recorded. Results: Compared with those in Group C, the FLACC scores in the N1 and N2 groups decreased significantly at T1-T5 (p < 0.05); the Ramsay Sedation score in the N1 group was significantly higher at T3 and T4 (p < 0.05), and that in the N2 group was significantly higher at T1-T5 (p < 0.05). Compared with that in the N1 group, the FLACC score in the N2 group was not significantly different, and the Ramsay Sedation score increased significantly at T5 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Using 0.05 mg/kg/h Nalbuphine continuously for 24 h for postoperative analgesia in children with cleft palate has a better effect and fewer adverse reactions. Background: The consensus among Canadians with regards to end-of-life preferences is that with adequate support the majority prefer to live and die at home. Purpose: To compare quality indicator (QI) rates for home care clients receiving palliative and end-of-life care prior to and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective population-based cohort design was used. Sixteen QIs informed by existing literature and a preliminary set of QIs recently evaluated by a modified Delphi panel were compared. Data were obtained from the interRAI Palliative Care instrument for Ontario home care clients for two separate cohorts: the pre-COVID (January 14, 2019 to March 16, 2020) and COVID cohort (March 17, 2020 to May 18, 2021). A propensity score analysis was used to match (using nearest neighbour matching) on 21 covariates, resulting in a sample size of 2479 unique interRAI Palliative Care assessments in each cohort. Alternative propensity score methods were explored as part of a sensitivity analysis. Results: After matching the pre-COVID and COVID cohorts, five of the 16 QIs had statistically significant differences in the QI rates (change from pre-COVID to COVID): decrease in prevalence of severe or excruciating daily pain (p = 0.03, effect size=-0.08), decrease in prevalence of caregiver distress (p = 0.02, effect size=-0.06), decrease in prevalence of negative mood (p = 0.003, effect size=- 0.17), decrease in prevalence of a delirium-like syndrome (p = 0.001, effect size=-0.25) and decrease in prevalence of nausea or vomiting (p = 0.04, effect size=-0.06). While the alternative propensity score methods produced slightly different results, no clinically meaningful differences were seen between the cohorts when effect sizes were examined. All methods were in agreement regarding the highest QI rates, which included the prevalence of shortness of breath with activity, no advance directives, and fatigue. Conclusion: This study is the first to examine differences in QI rates for home care clients receiving palliative and end-of-life care before and during COVID in Ontario. It appears that QI rates did not change over the course of the pandemic in this population. Future work should be directed to understanding the temporal variation in these QI rates, risk-adjusting the QI rates for further comparison among jurisdictions, provinces, and countries, and in creating benchmarks for determining acceptable rates of different QIs. Background: Cervical conization is a brief but painful procedure that can be performed under sufficient sedation with propofol and opioids. However, this sedation approach comes with a high risk of sedation-related adverse events (SRAEs). Esketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, causes less cardiorespiratory depression than opioids. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of adding a low dose of esketamine to propofol and sufentanil sedation as an opioid-reduced regimen. Methods: A total of 122 consecutive patients with ASA I-II, body mass index < 30, and STOP-BANG score < 3 who underwent cervical conization were enrolled and randomly divided into Group S and Group ES. Using a closed-loop target-controlled infusion (TCI) pump with a target bispectral index (BIS) value of 60 ± 5, patients in Group S were sedated with 0.2 mcg·kg-1 sufentanil and propofol, while patients in Group ES were sedated with 0.15 mg·kg-1 esketamine, 0.1 mcg·kg-1 sufentanil and propofol. The primary outcome was the incidence and severity of SRAEs, while the secondary outcomes included effectiveness of sedation, awakening time, psychotomimetic side effects, postoperative pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and patient and gynaecologist satisfaction. Results: Data from 120 patients were analysed. The incidence of composite SRAEs was significantly higher in Group S than in Group ES (85.0% vs. 56.7%, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the severity of SRAEs was higher in Group S than in Group ES (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the effectiveness of sedation, awakening time, psychotomimetic side effects, postoperative pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, or patient and gynaecologist satisfaction between the two groups. Conclusion: Adding low-dose esketamine to propofol and sufentanil sedation reduces the incidence and severity of SRAEs in patients undergoing cervical conization, with equal sedation efficacy, recovery quality, and no additional psychomimetic side effects. Background: Rett Syndrome (RTT) is a rare, severe, and progressive developmental disorder with intellectual disability. Anesthesia in RTT patients presents a range of challenges. We report a child with RTT who received dental treatment under muscle relaxant-free general anesthesia in our ambulatory center. Case presentation: A 15-year-old girl with RTT was admitted to our dental clinic with multiple dental caries and residual roots. Dental treatment was scheduled under ambulatory general anesthesia. After anesthesia induction, a nasal tube was initiated under the guidance of a fiberoptic bronchoscope. Multimodal analgesia, body temperature monitoring, and postoperative nausea and vomiting prevention were applied. No muscle relaxants were used throughout the process. The endotracheal tube was successfully removed after the operation and the patient was discharged home the same day. The management of cancer-related symptoms with nonpharmacological treatment has been proven effective, but more studies are still required to strengthen the scientific evidence. Given the state of the evidence, one might wonder about the perceptions of pediatric oncology experts, healthcare providers and CAM providers regarding the use of supportive care in pediatric oncology. Related to this important question, Mora et al. recently published an exploratory qualitative study entitled "Supportive care for cancer-related symptoms in pediatric oncology: a qualitative study among healthcare providers" in the BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies Journal. The data generated by the authors provided new insights and perspectives to the current literature. However, their findings must be put into perspective to increase the scope of the original article and to highlight that physical activity and psychosocial interventions are powerful nonpharmacological interventions to manage cancer-related symptoms. Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication after general anaesthesia and is associated with morbidity and prolonged length of stay. Growing evidence suggest that opioid-free general anaesthesia (OFA) may reduce PONV in various surgical settings. We aim to evaluate the efficacy of OFA on the incidence of PONV compared with opioid-based anaesthesia among adults undergoing thoracoscopic surgery. Methods: This is a prospective, single-centre, randomised controlled trial comparing OFA and opioid-based anaesthesia for thoracoscopic surgery. A total of 168 adults will be randomised with a 1:1 ratio to receive either opioid-free anaesthesia or opioid-based anaesthesia. The primary outcome will be the incidence of PONV within 24 h after operation. The secondary outcomes will include the severity of PONV, quality of recovery, pain at rest, 6-min walking test, and health-related quality of life after operation. Discussion: The benefit-risk of OFA for patients after operation is contradictory in previous studies, so further study is required. This trial will focus on the effect of OFA on the incidence of PONV in patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery. This trial adopts uniformed PONV and perioperative pain management, standardised randomised and blind, clear-cut inclusion and exclusion criteria, and standardised scales to assess the severity of PONV after surgery, the quality of postoperative recovery, and the health status at 6 months. Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common side effect associated with general anesthesia. Both ondansetron and aprepitant been effectively used to prevent PONV. However, there is a disagreement of opinions regarding the superiority of these two drugs. This study aims to compare the efficacy of aprepitant with ondansetron in preventing PONV following orthognathic surgeries. Methods: In this double-blinded clinical trial, 80 patients scheduled for orthognathic surgery at Imam Hossein Hospital, Tehran, Iran, were randomly assigned to two groups. A standardized anesthesia protocol was used for all patients. The first group received a placebo capsule administered one hour before the surgical procedure along with 4 mg (2 ml) of ondansetron intravenously after anesthesia induction. The second group was given 80 mg aprepitant capsules one hour before the surgery, followed by an injection of 2 ml intravenous distilled water after anesthesia induction. The occurrence and severity of PONV, the amount of rescue medication required, and the complete response of patients assessed within 24 h after the surgery. Results: There were no significant differences in demographic data between the two groups. Patients in the aprepitant group had a significantly lower incidence and severity of nausea (2.5% versus 27.5%), vomiting (5% versus 25%), and required fewer rescue medications (7.5% versus 62.5%) compared to the ondansetron group. Additionally, the aprepitant group showed a higher complete response rate (90% versus 67.5%) in the 0-2 and 12-24 postoperative hours. Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, aprepitant has demonstrated a greater efficacy in preventing PONV following orthognathic surgery, when compared to ondansetron. Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common orthopedic procedure for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Although effective in relieving pain and improving function, postoperative pain is still a common and distressing problem for many patients. This study aims to investigate efficacy of combined administration of dexmedetomidine and modified high fascia iliaca compartment block (H-FICB) in managing acute and chronic pain after TKA, as well as to identify the optimal dosage of dexmedetomidine. Methods: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dexmedetomidine in patients undergoing TKA. A total of 96 patients undergoing TKA were randomly assigned to one of three groups, were treated with different doses of dexmedetomidine All groups received H-FIB. Pain scores, opioid consumption, side effects, and quality of life were recorded 48 h postoperatively. Results: The intraoperative consumption of remifentanil and propofol in Group Db was significantly reduced compared with that in Group D0 and Da (P < 0.05). Compared with D0 and Da group, Db group had the lowest number of rescue analgesia, analgesia time and morphine accumulative dosage 48 h after operation (P < 0.05). The Db group had the lowest scores on the numerical rating scale at rest (P < 0.05) and during movement (P < 0.01), followed by the Da group and then the D0 group. Additionally, the incidence of nausea and vomiting was significantly reduced in the Db group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the Db group had the lowest incidence of chronic pain (P < 0.05). Discussion: In comparison to the other two groups, the administration of combined dexmedetomidine and H-FIB resulted in a significant reduction in pain scores, opioid consumption, and side effects. Background: We aimed to develop a nomogram that can be combined with point-of-care gastric ultrasound and utilised to predict postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in adult patients after emergency surgery. Methods: Imaging and clinical data of 236 adult patients undergoing emergency surgery in a university hospital between April 2022 and February 2023 were prospectively collected. Patients were divided into a training cohort (n = 177) and a verification cohort (n = 59) in a ratio of 3:1, according to a random number table. After univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis of the training cohort, independent risk factors for PONV were screened to develop the nomogram model. The receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC) were used to evaluate the prediction efficiency, accuracy, and clinical practicability of the model. Results: Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that female sex, history of PONV, history of migraine and gastric cross-sectional area were independent risk factors for PONV. These four independent risk factors were utilised to construct the nomogram model, which achieved significant concordance indices of 0.832 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.771–0.893) and 0.827 (95% CI, 0.722–0.932) for predicting PONV in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The nomogram also had well-fitted calibration curves. DCA and CIC indicated that the nomogram had great clinical practicability. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the prediction efficacy, differentiation, and clinical practicability of a nomogram for predicting PONV. Background and objectives: Local anesthetics (LAs) are widely used to infiltrate into surgical wounds for postoperative analgesia. Different adjuvants like dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine, when added to LA agents, could improve and prolong analgesia. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and opioid-sparing properties of dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine when added to ropivacaine for wound infiltration in transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Methods: We conducted a controlled study among 68 adult patients undergoing TLIF, which was prospective, randomized and double-blind in nature. The participants were divided into four equal groups at random. Group R was given 150 mg of 1% ropivacaine (15 mL) and 15 mL of normal saline. Group R + DXM received 150 mg of 1% ropivacaine (15 mL) and 10 mg of dexamethasone (15 mL). Group R + DEX received 150 mg of 1% ropivacaine (15 mL) and 1 µg/kg of dexmedetomidine (15 mL). Lastly, group R + DXM + DEX was given 150 mg of 1% ropivacaine (15 mL), 10 mg of dexamethasone and 1 µg/kg of dexmedetomidine (15 mL). The primary focus was on the length of pain relief provided. Additionally, secondary evaluations included the amount of hydromorphone taken after surgery, the numerical rating scale and safety assessments within 48 h after the operation. Results: Based on the p value (P > 0.05), there was no significant variance in the duration of pain relief or the total usage of hydromorphone after surgery across the four groups. Similarly, the numerical rating scale scores at rest and during activity at 6-, 12-, 24- and 48-h post-surgery for all four groups showed no difference (P > 0.05). However, the incidence of delayed anesthesia recovery was slightly higher in group R + DEX and group R + DXM + DEX when compared to group R or group R + DXM. Furthermore, there were no significant differences between the four groups in terms of vomiting, nausea, dizziness or delayed anesthesia recovery. Conclusion: For wound infiltration in TLIF, the addition of dexamethasone and dexmedetomidine to ropivacaine did not result in any clinically significant reduction in pain or opioid consumption and could prompt some side effects. Background: There have been very few real-world studies reported in the literature solely focusing on fremanezumab in Asia. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fremanezumab in a real-world setting in Japan. Method: This single-centered, observational, retrospective study examined patients with migraines who received four doses of fremanezumab between December 2021 and August 2022 at Keio University Hospital. We assessed the changes in monthly migraine days, responder rates, and migraine-associated symptoms, as well as injection site reactions and adverse events. Result: Twenty-nine patients were enrolled, wherein 79.3% were women. Compared with those at baseline, the monthly migraine days decreased by 5.9 days at 4 months. The 50% responder rate was 55.2% at 4 months. A total of 57.9%, 47.8%, and 65.0% of patients showed improvement in the severity of photophobia, phonophobia, and nausea/vomiting, respectively. Moreover, injection site reactions were the most common adverse events (55.2%). Conclusion: Fremanezumab is effective and safe for migraine prevention in Japan. Background: Several studies have investigated the effect of antiemetics on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in high-risk groups. However, few studies have investigated the effect of antiemetics in patients at low risk of developing PONV. Methods: In this prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial, 177 patients undergoing surgery under general anesthesia were randomly allocated to three groups. Patients allocated to group C (control group) received 2 mL of intravenous 0.9% saline, those allocated to group R (ramosetron group) received 0.3 mg of intravenous ramosetron, and those allocated to group DR (ramosetron plus dexamethasone group) received 5 mg of intravenous dexamethasone and 0.3 mg of intravenous ramosetron. Results: Finally, 174 patients completed the study, and the types of surgeries were orthopedic (n = 80), rhinologic (n = 47), urologic (n = 29), and others (n = 18). The incidence of PONV up to 48 h postoperatively was significantly lower in group DR than in group C. The incidence of PONV up to 0–1 h postoperatively was significantly lower in groups R and DR than in group C. The usage pattern of rescue antiemetics was consistent with the incidence of PONV. The percentage of patients requiring rescue analgesics 0–1 h postoperatively was significantly lower in groups R and DR than in group C. Conclusions: The combination of dexamethasone and ramosetron demonstrated a superior effect in preventing PONV for 48 h after surgery under general anesthesia than saline in patients at low risk of developing PONV. Compared with saline injections, ramosetron injections yielded better outcomes for the incidence of PONV and the use of rescue antiemetics and rescue analgesics 0–1 h postoperatively.
