Purpose: Survival rates of breast cancer (BC) patients are particularly low in rural regions in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) which is due to limited access to therapy. In recent years, gene expression profiling (GEP) of BC showed a strong prognostic value in patients with local tumour surgery and (neo)adjuvant treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of intrinsic subtypes on survival of patients in rural Ethiopia without any (neo)adjuvant therapy. Methods: In total, 113 female patients from Aira Hospital with histologically proven BC and treated only with surgery were included in this study. All samples were analysed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, HER2 and Ki67, as well as RNA-expression analysis for PAM50 subtyping. Results: A positive hormone receptor status was found in 69.0% of the tumours and intrinsic subtyping demonstrated Luminal B to be the most common subtype (34.5%). Follow-up data was available for 79 of 113 patients. Two-year overall survival (OS) was 57.3% and a considerably worse OS was observed in patients with Basal-like BC compared to Luminal A BC. Moreover, advanced tumours showed an increased risk of mortality. Conclusion: The OS was very low in the patient cohort that received no (neo)adjuvant treatment. Immunohistochemistry and GEP confirmed endocrine-sensitive tumours in more than half of the patients, with a large proportion of Luminal B, HER2-enriched and Basal-like tumours so that adjuvant chemotherapy should be recommended. Background: Peste des petits ruminant (PPR) is a contagious disease caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV). The disease poses a significant economic threat to small ruminant production in Ethiopia, particularly to the striving pastoral production system. A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of PPR in the small ruminants of the Borena Zone. A total of 384 serum samples were collected randomly from sheep and goats and examined for the presence of PPRV antibodies using competition enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (c-ELISA). Additionally, a retrospective analysis of five years of outbreak data was performed to provide insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of the disease. Results: The seroprevalence of PPRV antibodies in nonvaccinated, vaccinated, and unknown vaccination status of small ruminants in this study was found to be 32.1%, 68.8%, and 45.5%, respectively. Multivariable logistic analysis revealed a statistically significant association between PPRV seropositivity and several factors, including age, animal origin, flock size, and veterinary services status. A retrospective analysis revealed 53 PPR outbreaks in the Borena Zone from 2018 to 2022, exacerbated by low vaccination coverage relative to the at-risk animal population. Conclusion: The study revealed significant gaps in current vaccination efforts, with herd immunity levels falling below the FAO-WOAH recommended threshold of 80%. Despite Ethiopia's ambitious goal to eradicate PPR by 2027, the frequent outbreaks and insufficient herd immunity highlight the inadequacy of the existing strategies. To effectively move toward eradication, Ethiopia must align its approach with the global PPR eradication framework, which emphasizes a comprehensive strategy that includes diagnostics, surveillance, prevention, and the establishment of a robust veterinary regulatory system, rather than relying solely on vaccination. Overcoming logistical challenges, improving vaccination coverage, and optimizing the timing of vaccination campaigns, especially in hard-to-reach areas, will be crucial for reducing outbreaks and making progress toward eradication. Background: Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the species Echinococcus that typically affects the liver. Most liver hydatid cysts are asymptomatic at first, but as the cyst grows larger, symptoms, such as compression effects, start to appear. Ultrasonography and computed tomography scans are the widely used diagnostic tools, and surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment. Case presentation: We present an unusual case of a giant pedunculated hydatid cyst causing inferior vena cava syndrome in a 20-year-old male patient from the Oromo ethnic group from a rural area of the country. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography scan confirmed the diagnosis. Our patient underwent radical surgical resection of the cyst and had a good outcome. Conclusion: Hydatid liver cyst diagnosis needs a high index of suspicion for echinococcal etiology when dealing with a giant liver cyst as it results in grave complications without any manifestations. Introduction: Obstetric fistula is a birth injury that causes the vagina to open abnormally. As a result, women may experience urinary leakage, which can lead to isolation, depression, and a lower quality of life. Due to the scarcity of evidence regarding the average recovery time for obstetric fistula in Ethiopia, Therefore, this study aimed to assess the recovery time for women with obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Methods: Between September and 8 November 2023, published studies were searched using online databases including PubMed, Hinari, Epistemonikos, and Google Scholar. The systematic review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Study quality was assessed using Egger's test and a visual inspection of funnel plot symmetry. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA version 17 software. A random-effects model was employed for analysis, and the Cochrane Q-test and I² statistics were used to assess heterogeneity among studies. Result: A total of six studies were included in this analysis. The minimum and maximum median survival times were 2.67 and 5.19 weeks, respectively. The pooled median recovery time was 4.05 weeks (95% CI: 2.92, 5.18) based on the random effects model. Heterogeneity among the included studies assessed by the I² statistic was 97.72% (p = 0.000). The p-value for Egger's regression test (0.017) was significant, indicating evidence of publication bias. Conclusion: The findings reveal a pooled median recovery time of 4.05 weeks, with considerable heterogeneity. Although these figures provide valuable insights, the presence of publication bias was evidenced by the asymmetric funnel plot and significant Egger's test. Efforts to address publication bias are essential to improve future meta- the reliability of the surveys has increased. Background: Globally, 64–74 million individuals around the world are estimated to sustain traumatic brain injury every year. Moderate and severe traumatic brain injury can lead to a lifetime physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. There were limited studies conducted in Ethiopia regarding to traumatic brain injury mortality. Methods: An institutional based retrospective cohort study was conducted on 429 randomly selected traumatic brain injury patients aged 18 to 64 years who were admitted to East Amhara Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2021. Kobo toolbox was applied for data collection and exported to Stata version 17 for data processing and analysis. To estimate death free time, a Kaplan Meier failure curve was used. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used at the 5% level of significance to determine effect of predictor variables on time to death. Result: A total of 429 traumatic brain injury patients aged 18 to 64 years were included with response rate of 91.3% and 145(33.8%) were dead. Open injuries (AHR = 0.25; 95% CI: 0.18–0.36), co-existing injuries (AHR = 0.40; 95% CI: 0.24–0.66), ICU admission (AHR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.29–0.60), arrival within 4–24 h (AHR = 3.48; 95% CI: 2.01–6.03), arrival after 24 h (AHR = 6.69; 95% CI: 3.49–12.28), subdural hematoma (AHR = 2.72; 95% CI: 1.77–4.19), serum albumin < 3.5 g/dL (AHR = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.49–0.94), moderate (AHR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.21–0.89), and mild traumatic brain injury (AHR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.29–0.56) were predictors of traumatic brain injury mortality. Conclusion: The finding of this study showed that the mortality was 1/3rd of the total patients. Open injuries, co-existing injuries, ICU admission, arrival time (4–24 h and > 24 h), subdural hematoma, serum albumin < 3.5 g/dL and severity of traumatic brain injury (mild and moderate) were predictors of traumatic brain mortality. Background: HIV has an effect on lowering CD4 cell count, which lowers the ability to resist contamination. For patients on ART in areas with limited resources, the CD4 cell count assessment is crucial for determining treatment responses and therapeutic decisions. The volatility of CD4 counts following the introduction of ART over time is still largely uncharacterized, and there are few fresh datasets on CD4 cell count progressions. The goal of this study was to identify the key factors that change over time in CD4 cells for HIV/AIDS patients receiving ART follow-up in northern Ethiopia. Methods: A total of 216 HIV/AIDS patients who initiated ART in the Mekelle General Hospital between 2013 and 2016 were involved using systematic random selection techniques. An examination of exploratory data was used to describe the individual profiles of HIV patients. A multivariable random intercept and slope linear mixed regression analysis regarded predictor variables to be statistically significant if their p-value was less than 0.05. Results: The random intercept and slope linear mixed model result indicated that there were statistically significant predictors of baseline CD4 cell count (β = 0.0125, P-value = 0.001*) and bedridden functional status (β = -2.459, p = 0.02*) on the change of CD4 cell count over time in HIV/AIDS patients at the 5% significance level. Conclusions: Changes in CD4 counts were influenced by the baseline CD4 cell count and the functional status of being bedridden. Because their CD4 cell counts were lower at baseline and they had a functional status of bedridden, the majority of HIV/AIDS patients on ART had substantial predictors on the change of CD4 cell count over time. So, public health service providers should give exceptional guidance and attention is also necessary for those patients who have lower baseline CD4 cell count and bedridden functional status. Background: Community based health insurance (CBHI) is characterized by voluntary involvement, pooling of health risks and of funds occur within a community. It is becoming increasingly popular way to increase the use of healthcare services in low- and middle-income nations. Understanding the effect of CBHI on the level of health services utilization is a paramount for evidence based decision making. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the pooled effect of CBHI on health services utilization in Ethiopia. Methods: Studies were searched from PubMed, Google scholar, Web of Science, Research4life, Science Direct, African Journal Online and national websites for grey literatures. We were adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. Cross sectional and quasi experimental studies were included. Studies were screened, and critically appraised for quality using Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools. The data were extracted using Microsoft excel and exported to STATA 17 and RevMan 5.4.1 for further analysis. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using Cochran's Q statistic and quantified with I2. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled effect size. Subgroup analysis was done to show variations of the effect sizes across study years. Result: A total of 1501 studies were identified, out of which only 14 of them were included in the final meta-analysis. Health services utilization among CBHI members and non-members was 69.1% [95%CI (57.1–81.1%)] versus 50.9% [95%CI (40.6–61.3%)] respectively (difference in the effect was 18.2%). The CBHI members were nearly three folds more likely to utilize health services as compared with their counterparts [OR = 2.54, 95%CI: (1.81, 3.57). On average, CBHI users had 1.14 increased health facility visits as compared to non-insured, mean difference (MD) = 1.14 visits with 95% CI (0.65–1.63). Conclusion: The CBHI has a significantly increased health service utilization in Ethiopia. Hence, it will have a great contribution to meet the health for all agenda in resource limited countries. Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease frequently face various nutritional and metabolic problems that necessitate the use of multiple medications. This multiple drug use can lead to several drug-related problems including adverse drug events, hospital admissions, poor medication adherence, harmful drug interactions, inadequate therapeutic outcomes, and death. Despite these challenges, there is a notable lack of studies on the extent of multiple drug use and its determinants among patients with chronic kidney disease in Ethiopia. This study aims to assess the magnitude of multiple drug use and identify the determinants of vulnerability among patients with chronic kidney disease in Ethiopia. Method: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with chronic kidney disease. Eligible participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Frequency and percentage calculations were performed for categorical variables, while means and standard deviations were used for continuous variables. The chi-square test and t-test were used to compare the proportions and means, respectively. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the determinants of multiple drug use, with statistical significance determined by a p-value of less than 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval. Guidelines and previous literature were utilized to assess the magnitude of multiple drug use. Results: A total of 230 patients were enrolled, with more than half being male. The overall magnitude of multiple drug use was 83.0%. Diuretics being the most frequently prescribed medication class followed by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Patients aged 65 years and above (AOR = 4.91 (95% CI 1.60-15.03)), CKD stage five (AOR) = 5.48 (95% CI 1.99–15.09)), and the presence of comorbid conditions (AOR) = 3.53 (95% CI 1.55–8.06)) were significantly associated with multiple drug use. Conclusion: Chronic kidney disease patients exhibited a high rate of multiple drug use. The presence of comorbid conditions, disease progression and older age are significant determinates of this vulnerability. Background: Neonatal health is one of the targets for the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that aim to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1 000 live births in 2030. However, the world is not on track to achieve this target. The problem has worsened in many low-income countries, including Ethiopia, due to a fragile health system, as well as health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict, food insecurity and climate change. According to the Mini Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey, neonatal mortality is unacceptably high in Ethiopia in general, and in Amhara region in particular. Despite these facts, there is a paucity of information on the quality of neonatal health service provision in comprehensive specialized hospitals in Amhara region. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the quality of neonatal health services in terms of outcome (neonatal mortality) and its causes in comprehensive specialized hospitals in Amhara region. Methods: A multi-center retrospective study was conducted (from September 1–30/2022) on 315 neonates in four comprehensive hospitals with chart review. Data were collected through death audit with standardized neonatal death audit tool. Data were entered into Epi-data 3.1 and exported to SPSS 20 for analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to describe and summarize the data in an informative manner. Results: From 315 neonatal deaths, about two-thirds, 205 (65.1%), were from rural areas. Nearly half, 151 (48%), of the mothers had complications and delivered outside a health facility. About 36 (11.4%), 45 (14.3%), and 21 (6.7%) neonates' mothers had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd delays, respectively. About 59 (19%) of mothers had membrane rupture before the onset of labor and 23 (7.3%) had meconium-stained liquor. Almost three-fourths, 226 (71.7%), of the deaths were low birth weight (< 2500 gram). About 25 (8%) of neonates had congenital anomalies, 65% of them had fast breathing and 54.6% were preterm. Conclusion: Higher proportions of neonatal deaths were observed among neonates with rural residence, low birth weight, mothers' complications and neonates admitted for fast breathing. Background: Antiretroviral treatment failure is a global issue, particularly in developing countries such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior research findings were highly variable and inconsistent across areas. As a result, the goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the pooled prevalence of treatment failure among children receiving antiretroviral medication in Sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: To find qualifying papers, we searched databases (such as PubMed, Google Scholar, African Journals Online, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library). The data were retrieved using Microsoft Excel and exported to STATA Version 14 for analysis. To check for publication bias, we employed Egger and Begg's regression tests. A random-effects model was used to assess the pooled prevalence of treatment failure due to high levels of variability. Results: Following the removal of duplicated articles and quality screening, a total of 33 primary articles were determined to be appropriate for inclusion in the final analysis for this study. Overall, the pooled prevalence of treatment failure among HIV-infected children was 25.86% (95% CI: 21.46, 30.26). There is great variety across the included studies, with the majority of them being conducted in Ethiopia. Cameroon had the greatest pooled prevalence of treatment failure among HIV-infected children, at 39.41% (95% CI: 21.54, 57.28), while Ethiopia had the lowest, at 13.77% (95% CI: 10.08, 17.47). Conclusions: The pooled estimate prevalence of treatment failure among HIV-infected children in Sub-Saharan Africa was high. The implementation of national and international policies and strategies on ART clinic care services should be given special focus in order to reduce treatment failure in children living with HIV/AIDS. Background: The life-threatening diseases known as ACS (acute coronary syndrome) continue to produce considerable rates of morbidity and mortality despite breakthroughs in therapy. The study determined clinical outcome and its predictors in patients at the University of Gondar Comprehensive and Specialized Hospital (UOGCSH), North West Ethiopia. Design, setting, and participants: A retrospective cohort study design was employed at UOGCSH from January 31, 2018 to February 1, 2023. The hospital used a systematic random sampling procedure to select study participants from the medical records of patients in chronic cardiac follow-up clinics. Main outcome measures: Exposures were optimal medical therapy (OMT) versus non-optimal medical therapy collected from May to August 2023. Descriptive and analytical statistics were employed to compare study groups. A binary logistic regression model was employed to identify candidate variables for further analysis. Cox's proportional hazard model and log-rank test were employed, with a P-value < 0.05 used to evaluate statistical significance. A five-year all-cause mortality after discharge estimate was displayed by using Kaplan–Meier curves. Results: Among 422 patients with ACS [mean age, 61.56 (SD = 9.686) years; 54.7% male], of whom only 59.2% (250) received optimal medical therapy at discharge. Age ≥ 65, atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney diseases, and cardiogenic shock were negative independent predictors of optimal medical therapy. On the other hand, male sex was independently associated with the use of optimal medical therapy. All-cause mortality occurred in 16.6% (n = 70) and major adverse cardiac events occurred in 30.8% (n = 130) of patients with a 95% CI of 0.132–0.205 and 0.264–0.355, respectively. Multivariate analyses indicated that OMT was significantly associated with reduced all-cause mortality (aHR: 0.431, 95% CI: 0.222–0.835; P = 0.013). Conclusion: This study revealed that the use of preventive OMT in patients discharged with acute coronary syndrome was associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality. Background: Malaria is a major disease burden in Ethiopia. Migration can influence malaria transmission dynamics, with individuals relocating from malaria-free highland regions to malarious lowlands potentially facing elevated risks of contracting malaria. Migrants may find it difficult to protect themselves against malaria and have limited access to diagnosis or treatment. Settlers in gold mining sites are one type of migrant and are often neglected in malaria research yet may have particularly high malaria risk. This study was a malaria prevalence survey among settlers in a new gold mining settlement in the highly malarious Gambella Region, Ethiopia. Methods: n = 590 people were surveyed for demographic information and their knowledge and practices of malaria. Participants were tested for malaria using rapid diagnostic tests and microscopy. Using logistic regressions, the influence of demographic characteristics on malaria infections and bed net access were analysed. A sub-sample of participants was interviewed to comprehend settlement living conditions and healthcare accessibility. Results: The overall prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum was 37.5% (CI 32.4–42.3%). Young children were most likely to have malaria, with individuals aged 15–24 having 67% lower odds (aOR: 0.33; CI 0.13–0.86) of infection compared to those aged 1–4 years old. Meanwhile, those age 25-plus had 75% decreased odds of malaria infection (aOR 0.25; CI 0.10–0.65). Individuals with bed nets had ~ 50% decreased odds of testing positive for falciparum malaria than those reporting having no bed net (aOR: 0.47; CI 0.22–0.97). Individuals who relocated from low elevation with high malaria test positivity rate areas were more prone to testing positive for malaria, as were those residing in densely populated households with multiple malaria cases. Conversely, individuals from higher elevations with low malaria test positivity rates, and those living in households with 5–10 occupants and < 2 malaria infections, were more likely to possess bed nets. Conclusions: This gold mining settlement provides an example of an oft-neglected atypical community where malaria is a significant, but under-addressed, health problem. Within this community, future interventions focused on distributing bed nets, particularly to larger households and those with children, have great potential to alleviate the malaria burden. Background: Local operative treatments are generally preferred for most dental diseases, with antibiotics only recommended as an adjunct in specific cases. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics has been shown to significantly contribute to the development of resistant bacteria. However, the antibiotic prescribing practices of dentists in Ethiopia have not been thoroughly studied. This study aimed to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing for patients with dental diseases at dental clinics in Mekelle City, Northern Ethiopia. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in April and May 2020 among patients visiting dental clinics in Mekelle City. Data were collected through patient medical record reviews and dentist interviews. The appropriateness of antibiotic prescription was evaluated based on guidelines from the American Dental Association and the European Society of Endodontology. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics, version 29. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed, and the results were presented as odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. A p value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Two hundred and thirty-one patients with dental diseases participated in the study. The mean age was 30.6 years with a standard deviation of 16.1. Most participants had dental pulp related disease. 89% of patients were prescribed antibiotics, with amoxicillin being the most common. Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing was identified in 175 (75.8%) of the study participants. The most common inappropriate prescribing was unnecessary antibiotic prescribing for dental conditions without systemic signs, assessed in 141 (80.1%) participants. Patients diagnosed with pulp related disease without systemic signs and those who had tooth extractions were significantly associated with inappropriate antibiotic prescription (p value < 0.001). Conclusions: The study findings show that antibiotics are over-prescribed for dental conditions in this resource constrained setting, especially in patients who have had tooth extractions. Dentists need training on appropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial stewardship interventions should be implemented in dental setting to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions and prevent antibiotic resistance development. Background: The efficacy of vector control tools depends on the behavior of the vector species. Many studies have sought to determine the feeding behavior of Anopheles mosquitoes in different settings of Ethiopia. We have performed a systematic review aimed to generate pooled evidence on the overall and species-specific blood meal sources of Anopheles mosquitoes in Ethiopia. Methods: A search for relevant articles was performed in two electronic databases (PubMed and Science Direct) and three search engines (Google Scholar, Research Gate and Google) between 11 March and 2 April 2024. Following the initial identification of articles, we used EndNote X8 software and removed duplicate articles and screened the remaining articles by careful reading of their titles and abstracts. The full text of articles that passed this screening phase was retrieved, read and evaluated against predetermined selection criteria. The final decision for inclusion in the systematic review was made after a methodological quality check using the JBI critical appraisal checklist. All relevant data were extracted from tables, figures and texts of the included articles using a premade template in Excel, and the data were analyzed using Stata version 14 software. Results: Of the 2431 studies identified, 27 met the inclusion criteria; all were published between 1997 and 2024. At 215 data points (frequency of tests of each Anopheles species by location and method of mosquito collections), 18,771 Anopheles mosquitoes belonging to 23 species or species complexes were tested for blood meal sources. The commonest sources of blood meals for Anopheles mosquitoes were bovine (36.0%, n = 6758) and human (29.4%, n = 5520). Among the tested anophelines, Anopheles (An.) arabiensis accounted for 67.9% (n = 12,741), followed by An. pharoensis, An. demeilloni and An. stephensi at 10.0%, 5.6% and 4.4%, respectively. Overall, there was no difference in the mean proportion of An. arabiensis detected with domestic animal blood (33.4%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 32.4–34.4%) and those detected with human blood (31.8%, 95% CI 30.9–32.8%). However, a greater proportion of the outdoor collected An. arabiensis were found to feed on bovines (47.9%, 95% CI 35.3–60.6) compared to humans (12.9%, 95% CI 0.8–24.9, P < 0.01). The foraging ratio (FR), which accounts for host availability, was greater for bovines (FR = 0.7) than for humans (FR = 0.2) for An. arabiensis, indicating preferential feeding on bovine hosts. This host preference was supported by the host preference index (human:bovine = 0.4). Anopheles pharoensis was detected with a slightly higher human blood index (53.5%, n = 1005) compared to bovine blood index (45.2%, n = 849). In contrast, An. demeilloni, An. coustani and An. marshalli were detected with a higher bovine blood index. Recently invaded urban malaria vector, An. stephensi was found with a higher ovine blood index. Conclusions: Bovine and human hosts are common sources of a blood meal for Anopheles mosquitoes. In terms of host availability, An. arabiensis showed preferential feeding on bovines/cattle. Targeting domestic animals, bovines and ovines with endectocides could supplement current vector control interventions. Background: Missed nursing care refers to any aspect of care performed by nursing staff that is omitted or significantly delayed. Even though the potential impact of missing nursing care on maternal and fetal outcomes is significant, there is currently limited evidence regarding the extent of this issue specifically within the maternity wards. Therefore, this study aimed to assess missed nursing care and associated factors in the maternity wards of public hospitals in the Sidama region, Ethiopia 2022. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 361 nurses and midwives in maternity wards of Sidama region public hospitals from March 28 to April 26, 2022. Simple random sampling was used to select participants. The data was collected using the MISSCARE survey tool and analyzed with SPSS version 26. Simple linear and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify the factors associated with missed nursing care. Results: The overall mean missed nursing care score was 67 out of 130 (95% CI: 65.92, 68.02) and the average score for each nursing intervention was 2.58 out of 5 (95% CI: 2.54, 2.62). The intention to leave the institution (β = 3.812, 95% CI: 2.285, 5.340) and increasing weekly work hours (β = 0.203, 95% CI: 0.134, 0.272) were factors positively associated with missed nursing care. However, increased work experience (β= -0.963, 95%CI: -1.475, -0.452) and job satisfaction (β= -4.976, 95%CI: -6.431, -3.522) were negatively associated with missed nursing care. Conclusion: This study found that the level of missed nursing care was significant. Factors positively associated with missed nursing care included an intention to leave the institution and an increase in weekly work hours. Background: Malaria is an intravascular parasitic-related blood disease that causes bleeding, coagulopathy, and thrombocytopenia. However, limited data shows the effect of Plasmodium species infection on basic coagulation parameters and platelet count. Thus, this study aimed to assess basic coagulation parameters and platelet count among malaria patients. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 240 study participants (120 cases and 120 controls) from June 1, 2021, to February 30, 2022. A convenient sampling technique was employed to select study participants. The blood sample was collected by a trained laboratory technologist for platelet counts, prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), international normalization ratio (INR), blood film, and serological testing. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS version 23. Data were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H, and Spearman's rank-order correlation tests. Descriptive findings were presented through median, tables, and chart. In all cases, a P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The percentage of mild, moderate, and high malaria parasitemia levels per microliter of blood was 21.7%, 20%, and 58.3%, respectively. The overall median malaria parasitemia was 10,304 per microliter of blood. Among malaria patients, 77.5%, 61.7%, and 51.7% had prolonged PT, INR, and APTT, respectively as compared to control. Moreover, 26.7% of Plasmodium-infected participants had mild thrombocytopenia as compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The value of PT, APTT, and INR were significantly elevated, whereas the level of platelet count was inversely reduced when the malaria parasitemia level increased as compared to controls (p < 0.001). Background: Noroviruses (NoVs) are the leading cause of diarrheal disease among all age groups worldwide, with an increased burden in developing countries. As there is no surveillance, epidemiological data is limited in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of NoV infection among patients with diarrhea in the Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. Methods: A prospective health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2021 to November 2021. A total of 550 study participants of all age groups with symptoms of diarrhea were proportionately assigned to the four study areas, area with three health facilities. Study participants were systematically sampled in each health facility. A fecal sample from each case was collected. The RNA was extracted and tested for NoV by one-step RT-PCR. Sociodemographic and other variables were gathered using a pre-tested questionnaire. A descriptive analysis was performed. Both binary and multiple logistic regressions were utilized to identify factors associated with NoV infection. Variables with a p-value < 0.05 in the final model were considered statistically significant. Results: Five hundred nineteen out of 550 samples were analyzed (94.4% response rate). The overall prevalence of NoV was 8.9% (46/519). The positivity rates were higher among the elderly (33.3%) and under-5 children (12.5%). Both genogroup I and genogroup II (GII) were identified, with GII being the predominant, at 82.6% (38/46). Of all participants, only 20% reported a history of vomiting. Norovirus infection was more prevalent among participants from Debre Tabor (AOR = 4, 95%CI: 1.2–14) and Bahir Dar areas (AOR = 3.6, 95%CI: 1.04–11) compared to Debre Markos. Additionally, older adults (AOR = 7, 95% CI: 2–24) and under-5 children (AOR = 3.5, 95% CI: 2.8–12) were disproportionately affected compared to adults. The previous history of diarrhea (AOR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.7–7) was a significant factor contributing to NoV infections. Moreover, the odds of NoV infection were higher among individuals with a high frequency of diarrhea (AOR = 15.3, 95%CI: 7.6–43) and vomiting (AOR = 3.5, 95%CI: 1.5-8). Conclusions: The prevalence of NoV was considerably high, with the predominance of NoV-GII. The positivity rate was higher among the extreme age groups and varied across the study areas. Background: Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects over 250 million people, predominantly in impoverished communities, including those in Ethiopia. However, there is currently no available national data regarding its prevalence in Ethiopia or its potential association with anemia. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-2020) guideline was followed in our study. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted using international databases (PUB Med, Embase, Scopus, and Science Direct) and websites (Google Scholar and Google) from their date of inception to April 22, 2024. The quality of the retrieved studies was assessed using an adapted version of the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Publication bias and statistical heterogeneity were statistically assessed. A random effects model was applied, and all analysis was performed with STATA 17 statistical software. Result: The prevalence of schistosomiasis was assessed in twelve studies with 5747 participants. S. mansoni was studied in 11 research papers, while S. hematobium was assessed in one study. Using a random effect model due to high heterogeneity (I2 = 98.46%; P < 0.001), the overall pooled prevalence of schistosomiasis in Ethiopia was 22% (95% CI: 14.3, 29.6). The prevalence of schistosomiasis was about two and a half times higher in rural settings (23%) (95% CI: 15, 31) than in urban areas (10%) (95% CI: 3, 17). The burden of schistosomiasis was 23% between 2020 and 2024, compared to 16% from 2015–2019, with a higher prevalence among pediatric age groups (22%) versus 14% in mixed pediatric and adult age groups. The magnitude of schistosomiasis for good and very good-quality papers was 22% and 17%, respectively. In all the subgroup analyses, there was considerable statistically significant heterogeneity. No study was found to evaluate the association of schistosomiasis with anemia. Conclusion: The study reveals Ethiopia's higher schistosomiasis prevalence. Rural areas have a high burden of schistosomiasis. No eligible study was found to evaluate the association of schistosomiasis with anemia. Background: E-health systems have the potential to improve healthcare delivery and access to medical services in resource-constrained settings. Despite its impact, the system exhibits a low level of consumer acceptance and intention to use it. This research paper aims to analyze the intention of health service employees to use e-health systems in southwest Ethiopia using the UTAUT-2 model. Method: Institutional-based cross-sectional studies were conducted at four referral hospitals (two private and two public) to examine the acceptance of e-health among consumers. Employees who had previous experience with diagnostic information systems and the health logistic information system were given structured questionnaires based on the UTAUT-2 model. The data were analyzed using the PLS-SEM method to identify the key factors that influence the intention to use e-health systems. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and SmartPLS 3 software. Result: Out of the 400 surveyed employees, 225 (56.25%) valid questionnaires were collected. The findings indicate that three factors—effort expectancy (β = 0.276, t = 3.015, p = 0.001), habit (β = 0.309, t = 3.754, p = 0), and performance expectancy (β = 0.179, t = 1.905, p = 0.028)—had a significant positive impact on employees' intention to use e-health systems. On the other hand, factors such as social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, and price values did not appear as significant predictors of intention to use e-health. The study model was able to predict 63% of employees' intentions to use e-health systems. Conclusion: Effort expectancy, habit, and performance expectancy were significant predictors of employees' intention to use e-health systems among health service employees in southwest Ethiopia. The study supports the ideas that ease of use, experience with information systems, and the role of the systems in improving job performance contribute to employees' intention to use e-health. Policymakers and healthcare organizations in the region can use these findings to develop strategies for successful implementation and adoption of e-health systems, ultimately improving healthcare services and outcomes for the population. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has had different public health problems among students. During COVID-19 outbreak, students were distant from scholastic area and social collaboration and affected by different mental health problems. A comprehensive analysis on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of students in Ethiopia is limited. The aim of this study is to explore and summarize the impact of COVID-19 on students' mental health in Ethiopia. Materials and methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Cochrane Library, CrossRef, African Journals Online and Google scholar databases were searched from December 2019 to June 2022. Study selection, data extraction and quality assessment of study were done by two authors independently. I² statistics was used to assess heterogeneity. A random effect model was used. Stata 16.0 was used for statistical analysis and graphics. Results: Eight studies were incorporated. From 7 studies report, the pooled prevalence of stress was 35% (95% CI 23–48%, I2 = 98.20%, Tau^2 = 0.03, p < 0.001). From 6 studies reported the pooled prevalence of the anxiety was 44% (95% CI 30%-57%, I2 = 97.90%, Tau^2 = 0.03, p < 0.001). From 5 studies reported the pooled prevalence of depression was 44% (95% CI 23%-65%, I2 = 99.10%, Tau^2 = 0.06, p < 0.001). Likewise, the factors of mental illness were summarized. Conclusion: COVID-19 significantly affects mental health of students in Ethiopia. Anxiety, stress and depression were the most reported mental health problems. Background: Simulation is a method of learning in which the learner experiences a simulated situation instead of being physically present in the clinical area. Exposing students to simulation-based education improves learners' clinical competence and ability to make decisions, which are crucial for today's health workforce. When given the proper circumstances, such as receiving feedback on their performance, having the chance for repeated practice, and having simulation as a core component of the curriculum, simulated instruction greatly aids in learning. Although previous studies have been conducted in this area, there are gaps in determining the factors related to their learning environment and design characteristics. Method: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 413 midwifery students in Amhara region universities from August 1–30, 2022. Study participants were selected via a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected from third and fourth-year undergraduate midwifery students through a self-administered questionnaire. Epi Data version 4.6 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26 were used for data entry and analysis, respectively. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed; a P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant in the study. Result: This study revealed that 84.7% (95% CI: 81.1–88.3) of midwifery students in Amhara region universities were satisfied with simulation-based education. Year of study [AOR: 2.936; 95% CI (1.531–5.631)], adequate support [AOR: 2.903; 95% CI (1.217–6.922)], availability of instructors [AOR = 2.861, 95% CI (1.078–7.591)], and provision of checklists [AOR: 2.326; 95% CI (1.143–4.734)] were found to be statistically significant variables. Conclusion: This study revealed undergraduate midwifery students were more satisfied with simulation-based education compared with previous studies conducted in Ethiopia. Predictor variables such as year of study, support, instructor availability, and provision of checklists were significantly associated with student satisfaction. Hence, midwifery departments should strengthen the support given by staff, encourage their instructors to be available during simulations, improve the utilization and provision of checklists to students as much as possible. Background: Electronic learning is the process of remote teaching and learning through the use of electronic media. There is a dearth of research on the factors influencing e-learning acceptance in Ethiopia using the modified technology acceptance model (TAM). Previous research appears to have overlooked the mediating impact of factors on e-learning acceptability Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the acceptance of e-learning and its associated factors among postgraduate medical and health science students by applying TAM at first-generation universities in the Amhara region. Methods: This institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 15 to April 20, 2023, at Amhara First Generation University, Ethiopia. A total of 659 students participated in the study. A self-administered questionnaire in the Amharic language was used to collect the data. SEM analysis was employed to test the proposed model and the relationships among factors using SPSS version 25 and AMOS version 26. Results: The proportion of postgraduate students who agreed to use e-learning was 60.7%, 95% CI (56.9–64.4). SEM analysis revealed that perceived ease of use (β = 0.210, p < 0.001), attitude (β = 0.377, p < 0.001) and perceived usefulness (β = 0.330, p < 0.001) had positive direct relationships with acceptance of e-learning. Perceived usefulness (β = 0.131, p < 0.001), and perceived ease of use (β = 0.029, p < 0.01) significantly mediate the relationship between self-efficacy, and acceptance of e-learning. Accessibility had a positive indirect effect on acceptance of e-learning through perceived ease of use (β = 0.040, p < 0.01). Facilitating condition had a positive indirect on acceptance of e-learning through perceived ease of use (β = 0.070, p < 0.01), and perceived usefulness (β = 0.084, p < 0.001). Conclusion and recommendation: Overall, the proportion of postgraduate students who accepted e-learning is promising. Perceived ease of use perceived usefulness, and attitude had positive direct effects on the acceptance of e-learning. Facilitating conditions and self-efficacy had positive indirect effects on the acceptance of e-learning. Thus, implementers need to prioritize enhancing the provision of devices, students' skills, and knowledge of e-learning by providing continuous support to improve students' acceptance of the use of e-learning. Background: Rodents are mammals of the order Rodentia, which are found in all continents except Antarctica. They are the most diverse groups of mammals representing 41% of all mammals and they are known with 33 families, 481 genera, and about 2277 species. The present study was conducted from December 2018 to August 2019 both during the dry and wet seasons using Sherman traps and live traps. Four trap sites namely forest, bushland, grassland, and sugarcane plantation were selected for data collection. Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') was used to compute rodent species diversity, Simpson's index (D) to assess the number and abundance of rodents in the different habitats, and one-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test were used for data analysis. Results: A total of 163 individual rodents were captured in 1776 trap nights of which 125 individuals were captured using live traps in 1176 trap nights and 38 individuals using snap traps in 600 trap nights. Among the total individual rodents captured in the Bahir Dar Blue Nile River Millennium Park, 63.8% (n = 104) were males and 36.2% (n = 59) were females. Males outnumbered females in all the grids and the difference was significant (t = 31.5, df = 10, p < 0.05). The relative abundance of rodent species indicated that 42.4% (n = 53) were Arvicanthis niloticus, 26.4% (n = 33) Rattus rattus, 17.6% (n = 22) Mus musculus, 8% (n = 10) Mastomys natalensis, and 5.6% (n = 7) Arvicanthis abyssinicus. There are more individual specimens of A. niloticus than other species identified in the area (F = 698.22, df = 4, p < 0.05). Distribution of rodents varied among the different habitats. As a result, the bushland habitat showed more diversity of rodents (H = 0.98) and comprised relatively the highest (51.2%, n = 64) number of individuals captured, while the forest habitat supported the lowest number of rodents (4%, n = 5), and the difference showed a significant difference (F = 873.37, df = 3, p < 0.05). Population density with 95% confident interval estimated as 166 individuals/ha (95% CI:164.43–167.57). Conclusion: The present study provides basic information about population dynamics of rodents and contributes to design conservation strategies for rodents in particular and other biota of the area in general. Background: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) among under-five children from HIV care profoundly affects the treatment outcomes of this vulnerable population. It is a major factor that negatively affects the benefits of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Current information about LTFU among HIV-positive under-five children on ART is essential for effective treatments. To far, nevertheless, limited research has been done in Ethiopia to address this issue. Thus, this study aimed to assess the incidence and predictors of LTFU among HIV-infected under-five children receiving ART in West Amhara Comprehensive Specialized Referral Hospitals. Methods: A multicenter institution-based retrospective follow-up study was conducted among 435 HIV-infected under-five children on ART selected by simple random sampling from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019, and data were collected between December 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022. A standardized data extraction tool adapted from the ART entry and follow-up forms was used. The event of interest for this study was LTFU, whereas the absence of LTFU was censored. Before being transferred to STATA version 14 for analysis, the data were entered into Epi-Data version 3.1. The Kaplan‒Meier curve was used to estimate an individual's survival-free probability at each specific point in time. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify predictors of LTFU. Results: Among the 420 records included in the final analysis, 30 (7.14%) of the individuals were LTFUs. The incidence rate of LTFU was 3.4 per 1000 person-months of observation (95% CI: 2.43–4.87). The survival probabilities of children after 12, 24, 36, and 48 months were 0.97, 0.92, 0.88, and 0.77, respectively. The independent predictors of LTFU were HIV infection in under-five children who lived in rural areas (AHR = 3.64; 95% CI: 1.41, 9.37), poor adherence to ART (AHR = 4.37; 95% CI: 1.59, 12.02), not receiving cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (AHR = 3.75; 95% CI: 1.39, 10.08), not receiving isoniazid prophylaxis (AHR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.29, 9.01), and having a severe WHO clinical stage (AHR = 5.43; 95% CI: 1.38, 11.43). Conclusion and recommendation: The incidence of loss to follow-up was high, especially in the first two years after ART initiation. The risk of LTFU was greater for those who were rural residents, had poor adherence, lacked cotrimoxazole preventive therapy, not given isoniazid prophylaxis, and presented with WHO clinical stages III and IV. Therefore, clinicians should emphasize for cotrimoxazole preventive therapy and isoniazid prophylaxis, for those living in rural areas, who present with poor adherence and WHO clinical stages III and IV. Background: One of the reasons for the high rates of maternal and child morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa is the rising proportion of teenage pregnancy. Preventing teenage pregnancy is critical to meeting sustainable development goal number three which aims to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. To support the achievement of this goal, this study aimed to assess the spatial variation and factors associated with teenage pregnancy in Ethiopia using the recent nationally representative data. Methods: A secondary data analysis of the 2019 Ethiopian mini Demographic and Health Survey was conducted with a total weighted sample of 2211 (unweighted 2100) teenagers. The Bernoulli model was fitted using SaTScan version 9.6 to identify hotspot areas and the geospatial pattern and prediction of teenage pregnancy were mapped using ArcGIS version 10.7. A multilevel logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with teenage pregnancy among teenagers. Adjusted OR with 95% CI was calculated and variables having a p-value less than 0.05 were statistically significant factors of teenage pregnancy. Result: The prevalence of teenage pregnancy among adolescents aged 15–19 years in Ethiopia was 12.89% (95% CI: 11.56%, 14.36%). The SaTScan analysis identified a primary cluster in the Gambella region of Ethiopia (log-likelihood ratio = 14.02, p < 0.001). A high prevalence of teenage pregnancy was observed in Somalia, Afar, Gambella, and the southern part of the Oromia regions of Ethiopia. Age, educational status- primary and secondary, religion- protestant, having television, contraceptive knowledge, household head-female, and region- Small peripheral were significant determinants of teenage pregnancy. Conclusion: The spatial distribution of teenage pregnancy in Ethiopia was nonrandom. Age, educational status, religion, having television, contraceptive knowledge, sex of household head, and region were significant determinants of teenage pregnancy. Therefore, concerned government bodies and other stakeholders should organize periodic educational campaigns and youth-friendly reproductive health services. Collaboration between healthcare professionals, and religious and community leaders could also form a strategic partnership that makes interventions more comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and effective in reducing teenage pregnancy. Background: Distal femur fractures account for 6% of femur fractures. The treatment of distal femur fractures is challenging. Historically, nonoperative management has been the mainstay of management, which has evolved to operative management. There is no single implant used for all types of distal femur fractures. The implant evolves with time. The introduction of a distal femur locking plate (DF LCP) has had a great impact on the treatment. In developing countries like Ethiopia, there is scarcity of studies on functional outcome of operative treatment. So, this study aimed to assess the functional outcome of distal femur fractures treatment using distal femur locking plate. Methods: This prospective cohort study was carried out among adult patients with distal femur fractures treated using distal femur locking plate at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital from august 2022 to July 2023. A total of 60 patients with AO Type A and Type C fracture were included. All patients were followed for 6 months. Functional outcomes were assessed using Neer's scoring system. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 27. Frequency, mean and cross tabulation were used to summarize descriptive statistics. Multinomial logistic regression was used to test the associations. Results: In our study out of 60 patients ,48.3% (29) had excellent functional outcomes, 30% (18) had good functional outcomes, 10% (6) had fair functional outcomes and 11.7% (7) had unsatisfactory functional outcomes according to Neer's scoring system. Patients with closed distal femur fractures had 5 times higher probability of excellent functional outcome than those patients with open distal femur fractures (AOR (2.49(5.8 ,1.07)). Patients who had regular follow up had 7 times higher probability of excellent functional outcome than those who had no regular follow up (AOR 7.16(1.11,46.22)). The average union period was 4.63 months, with only 2 patients experiencing delayed union. Conclusion: Closed fracture and regular follow up were determining factors for better functional outcomes. Closed fractures preserve the biological environment, which facilitates early fracture healing. Background: Cervical cancer is a significant global health challenge, with the majority of cases and deaths occurring in low-resource regions like sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia. Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in this area face a six-fold higher risk of cervical cancer compared to women living without HIV Both the availability of screening services and their utilization remain low, particularly among WLHIV, hindering efforts to reduce the cervical cancer burden in this vulnerable population. Objective: This study aimed to synthesize the current research on the prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization and the associated factors among women living with HIV in Ethiopia. Method: We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, searching databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies published from 2015 up to 2023 and the search period for these relevant articles was from April 1 up to April 30, 2024. Data from included studies was extracted, organized in Excel, and then analyzed using STATA 17. The overall effect across all studies was calculated using a random-effect model. Potential publication bias and heterogeneity in the results between studies were assessed using Egger's test, forest plot, and I² statistic, respectively. Result: According to the systematic review and meta-analysis, the overall prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization among women living with HIV in Ethiopia was 24% (17 − 32%). Several factors were independently associated with cervical cancer screening utilization, including age (40–49) years (OR = 3.95, 95% CI: 3.307–4.595), age (18–29) years (OR = 5.021, 95% CI: 1.563–9.479), education level greater than college (OR = 3.293, 95% CI: 1.835–4.751), having good knowledge (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), early initiation of sexual intercourse (OR = 3.421, 95% CI: 2.928–3.915), awareness of cervical cancer (OR = 3.551, 95% CI: 2.945–4.157), having information about cancer (OR = 3.671, 95% CI: 2.606–4.736), CD4 count less than 500 cell/mm3 (OR = 4.001, 95% CI: 1.463–6.539), government employee (OR = 5.921, 95% CI: 1.767–10.076), and perceived susceptibility (OR = 2.950, 95% CI: 2.405–3.496). Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis show that the pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening rates among Women living with HIV in Ethiopia is notably low, at only 24%. Factors influencing service utilization include age, education level, knowledge about cervical cancer, early sexual initiation, awareness of the disease itself, and HIV-related conditions. Introduction: Globally, about 45 million under-five children have suffered from wasting where Asian and African countries have the major share of these wasted children. Despite wasting is affected all types of populations, the long and short term effect is more severe and sensitive in under-two aged children. Hence, this review was intended to assess pooled prevalence and associated factors of wasting among under-two children in Ethiopia. Methods: The search was done using electronic data bases (Hinari, PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus) and research repositories from June 19–22/2023. The review included articles published between January 2013 and December 2023.The study included Cross-sectional/case control studies which report the prevalence and associated factors of wasting in under-two aged children. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) quality assessment checklists for observational studies. The presence of heterogeneity between included studies was evaluated using Cochrane Q-test and the I2 statistics. Publication bias was checked through graphical and statistical test. Associated factors were estimated by random effect model using DerSimonian-Laird model weight. Results: The pooled prevalence of wasting among under-two children was 10.91% (95% CI: 8.97–12.85; I2 = 86.36%). Absence of maternal antenatal follow up (OR; 3.23: 95%CI: 1.20–5.26), no exclusive breast feeding until six months (OR; 5.30; 95%CI: 1.17–9.43), current illness of the child (OR; 2.58: 95%CI: 1.78–3.37), large family size (OR; 12.38; 95%CI: 1.37–26.13) and low wealth status of the households (OR; 3.91; 95%CI: 1. 54-8.36) were significant factors of wasting among under-two children. Conclusions: This study disclosed that the pooled prevalence of wasting among under- two children were high in Ethiopia. Absence of maternal antenatal follow up, no exclusive breast feeding, low wealth status of the households, large family size and current illness of the child were significant factors of wasting. Strictly adherence of maternal antenatal follow up, counsel the parents to feed only breast milk until six months, limit the number of family size to the level of the household income and early treatment of the sick child were recommended. Furthermore, scale up the wealth status and living standard of the family can address the agenda of reducing and eradicating all forms of malnutrition. Background and objectives: Although the goal of translational research is to bring biomedical knowledge from the laboratory to clinical trial and therapeutic products for improving health, this goal has not been well achieved as often as desired because of many barriers documented in different countries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the challenges and opportunities of translating animal research into human trials in Ethiopia. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study, using in-depth interviews, was conducted in which preclinical and clinical trial researchers who have been involved in animal research or clinical trials as principal investigator were involved. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic process. Results: Six themes were emerged for challenges: lack of financial and human capacity, inadequate infrastructure, operational obstacles and poor research governance, lack of collaboration, lack of reproducibility of results and prolonged ethical and regulatory approval processes. Furthermore, three themes were synthesized for opportunities: growing infrastructure and resources, improved human capacity and better administrative processes and initiatives for collaboration. Conclusion and recommendations: The study found that the identified characteristics/features are of high importance either to hurdle or enable the practice of translating animal research into human trials. The study suggests that there should be adequate infrastructure and finance, human capacity building, good research governance, improved ethical and regulatory approval process, multidisciplinary collaboration, and incentives and recognition for researchers to overcome the identified challenges and allow translating of animal research into human trials to proceed more efficiently. Background: Length of stay in the emergency department is used as a quality indicator to gauge the overall efficiency of emergency care. The performance measure was used to evaluate the quality of care provided in the emergency department. Objective: To assess the length of stay and associated factors among pediatric patients admitted to the pediatric emergency unit of Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: An institution-based prospective cross-sectional study design was employed. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Data were collected via semi-structured, interviewer-administered questionnaires and chart reviews. Analysis was performed via the Statistical Package for Social Science software version 27. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify variables associated with the length of stay. The study was conducted in the Pediatric Emergency Unit of Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from March 15 to April 15, 2023. Results: A total of 268 patients participated in the study, with a response rate of 97.81%. The majority of the participants were male (157, 58.6%), with a median age of 3 years. The study revealed that 180 participants (67.2%) experienced a prolonged length of stay. The variables significantly associated with prolonged length of stay included residency (AOR = 2.04, CI: 1.03, 4.025), triage category (AOR = 3.25, CI: 1.08, 5.974), number of investigations (AOR = 2.381, CI: 1.038, 5.462), and waiting for imaging (AOR = 4.230, CI: 1.638, 10.93). Conclusion: Many pediatric patients stayed in the emergency room for more than 24 h because of factors such as residency, triage category, number of investigations, and the need for imaging. To address this, we recommend streamlining triage processes, increasing imaging resources, providing additional staff training, developing integrated care pathways, and advocating for policy changes to increase emergency room efficiency and improve patient outcomes. Background: The urease-producing Helicobacter pylori increase the likelihood that pathogenic intestinal protozoa will use the stomach's increased hydrogen potential to propagate the disease. Coinfections exacerbate the onset and severity of gastrointestinal symptoms. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites/Helicobacter pylori coinfection and contributing factors in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms at Addis Zemen Primary Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: From April to July 2023, patients with gastrointestinal problems participated in a cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital. To collect the clinical and sociodemographic data, a questionnaire was employed. Intestinal parasites and Helicobacter pylori were detected using the saline stool wet mount and Helicobacter pylori stool antigen tests, respectively. SPSS version 20 was used to analyze the data and variables with p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Result: The study included 384 participants in total, of which 47.3% (182/384) were farmers and 50.3% (193/384) were women. Of the study subjects, 69/384 or approximately 18%, had intestinal parasitic infections. In 12% of cases (46/384), Helicobacter pylori were detected. A coinfection of Helicobacter pylori and intestinal parasites was found in 5.5% (21/384) of the subjects. Multiple logistic regression revealed increased risk of coinfection of Helicobacter pylori and intestinal parasites in patients who drink surface water (AOR: 10.7, p = 0.03) family history of Helicobacter pylori (AOR: 3.3, p = 0.024) and those with untrimmed fingers (AOR: 4.9, p = 0.031). Conclusions: Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica/dispar/ moshkovskii/ bangladeshi complex are the most common protozoans that cause coinfection with Helicobacter pylori. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitiligo and associated factors among patients visiting the dermatologic outpatient departments at Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital and Addisalem Primary Hospitals, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, from September 15 to November 15, 2023. Results: Among the 460 patients studied, 243 (52.8%) were female, with the majority (28.9%) aged between 25 and 34 years. The overall prevalence of vitiligo was found to be 7.4% (34 patients). Significant predictors of vitiligo included rural residence (AOR: 3.18; 95% CI: 1.10–9.18), family history of vitiligo (AOR: 2.20; 95% CI: 2.16–4.76), and aggravating factors such as trauma (AOR: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.01–2.08). The highest prevalence was observed in the 14–24 age group. Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) have an increased risk of vascular complications. Despite the rise in the prevalence of T2D and its complications throughout the globe, there is a paucity of data regarding the prevalence and determinants of vascular complications of T2D in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the prevalence, patterns, and determinants of the microvascular and macrovascular complications of T2D among adult patients attending a teaching hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective study was done by reviewing the electronic health records of adult patients with T2D attending the general medical and endocrine referral clinics of Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from June 1, 2023, to November 30, 2023. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 25, was used to analyze the data. Descriptive analysis was used to summarize the sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory profiles as well as the patterns of vascular complications of T2D. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted, and the crude odds ratio (COR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR), together with the 95% confidence interval (CI), were computed to identify the determinants of microvascular and macrovascular complications of T2D. Results: A total of 272 patients with T2D were included in this study; 50.5% were females, and the mean (± standard deviation) age was 56.3 ± 12.8 years. The majority of patients (62.5%) had diabetes for ≥ 5 years. More than half (51.5%) had poor glycemic control with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) value of ≥ 7%. The overall prevalence of vascular complications was 39%. The prevalence of microvascular complications was 23.5%, the most common being neuropathy (11.8%), and the prevalence of macrovascular complications was 21%, the most common being coronary artery disease (12.1%). The determinants of microvascular complications were age ≥ 60 years (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.17, 4.33), diabetes duration of ≥ 5 years (5–10 years [AOR = 3.13, 95% CI: 1.37, 7.18], and > 10 years [AOR = 3.88, 95% CI: 1.66, 9.06], and HbA1c value of ≥ 7% (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.14, 4.28). The odds of developing macrovascular complications were higher with diabetes duration of ≥ 5 to 10 years (AOR = 2.89, 95% CI: 1.37, 6.12) as compared with diabetes duration of < 5 years. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular complications in adult patients with T2D. Older age, prolonged duration of diabetes, and poor glycemic control were identified as the determinants for the development of microvascular complications of T2D, while prolonged duration of diabetes was the determining factor for the development of macrovascular complications. Background: In developing countries birth asphyxia is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Despite the implementation of various strategies and interventions to combat neonatal mortality rates, birth asphyxia remains the main public health concern in Ethiopia. Moreover, limited studies have been conducted, especially in the study area and there are no multicenter analyses available to generate evidence for action. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the burden and associated factors of birth asphyxia among newborns in the selected public hospitals of the Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau. Methods: Three hundred forty-three mother-child pairs who used delivery services and gave birth in the selected public hospitals were included in the study, and institution based cross sectional study design was employed. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A pretested, structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The physician's/health care professionals diagnosis of an Apgar score less than 7 within the first five minutes of life led to the confirmation of the diagnosis of birth asphyxia. SPSS version 24 was used for analysis after the data were exported from Epi Info version 7.2. Multivariate logistic regression analysis included variables which had P-values less than 0.25 in the bivariable logistic regression analysis. The study findings were expressed using adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval, and P-value less than 0.05 was used to declare the statistical significance. Results: The magnitude of birth asphyxia was found to be 17.1% [95% CI; (13.2–21.5)] at the first 5 min. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis cord accident [AOR = 6.24: 95% CI; (1.24–31.32)], prolonged duration of labor [AOR = 2.49: 95% CI; (1.93–10.89)], and meconium-stained amniotic fluid [AOR = 3.33: 95% CI; (1.73–6.41)] were the predictors of birth asphyxia. Conclusions: The findings of this research indicate that birth asphyxia is a prevalent neonatal problem at the study area. Therefore, the Addis Ababa Health Bureau must prioritize integrated mitigation interventions targeting high-risk pregnancies to achieve national and international commitment to sustainable changes in newborn health. Background: Sepsis is a leading cause of neonatal mortality, despite the availability of effective treatment of possible serious bacterial illness (PSBI), including when referral to a hospital is not feasible. Gaps in access and delivery worsened during COVID-19. We conducted embedded implementation research in Ethiopia and Kenya aimed at mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and addressing various implementation challenges to improve PSBI management. Methods: The implementation research projects were implemented at the subnational level in Ethiopia and Kenya between November 2020-June 2022 (Ethiopia) and December 2020-August 2022 (Kenya). Guided by the implementation research frameworks, both projects conducted mixed formative quantitative and exploratory research from April to May 2021, followed by summative evaluations conducted between June and July 2022. Frameworks encompassed Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM), as well as health systems framework that incorporates cascades of care and World Health Organization Health Systems Building Blocks. Results were synthesized across the projects through document review and sharing cross-project measures and strategies through a project community of practice. Results: Despite differences in settings across the projects, cross-cutting facilitators included community health worker program and support, and existence of guidelines for PSBI management at primary care levels. Barriers included community attitudes towards seeking care for sick newborns, COVID-19 risks and fear, and lack of health care worker competence. Country-specific contextual barriers included supply chain issues, civil conflict (Ethiopia), and labor strikes (Kenya). Strategies chosen to mitigate barriers and support implementation and sustainability in both settings included leveraging community health workers to address resistance to care-seeking, health workers' training, COVID-19 infection prevention measures, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy to integrate PSBI management into existing programs, policies, and training. Other strategies addressing emerging project-specific barriers, included improving follow-up through a community health desk and PSBI mobile app (Kenya) and supply chain strengthening (Ethiopia). Both projects improved PSBI management coverage, increased adoption and uptake, and informed national policy changes supporting potential for sustainability. Conclusions: Pragmatic embedded implementation research effectively supports the identification of barriers and mapping to strategies designed to increase effective coverage of PSBI management when referral is not feasible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: The principal route of HIV infection in children is vertical transmission. Thus, this study aimed to assess the incidence of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and predictors of positivity among HIV-exposed infants. Method: Institutions-based retrospective follow-up study was conducted in South Gondar Public hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia from December 2019 to November 2021. The data were taken from PMTCT logbooks and patient medical records, with death being the competing event. Data were entered in to Epi info version 7 and exported to STATA version 14 for final analysis. Both bivariable and multiple variable proportional subdistribution hazard analysis were conducted to identify predictors. P-value < 0.05 was level of significance. Result: A total of 469 exposed infant mother pairs records were included. The cumulative incidence rate at the end of the study period was 5.2 per 1000 person months (5.2; 95% CI: 3.4-8.0).Infants' absence of ARV prophylaxis at birth (aSHR = 3.7; 95% CI: 1.33–10.48), Mothers with no PMTCT intervention (aSHR = 5.1; 95% CI: 1.83–14.03), home delivery (aSHR = 4.1; 95%CI: 1.46–11.63) and maternal disclosure of HIV status to partner/families (aSHR = 2.9; 95% CI: 1.06–7.78) were predictors of HIV positivity. Conclusion: The study found that Infants' absence of ARV prophylaxis at birth, mothers without PMTCT intervention, home delivery and mothers who were not disclosing their HIV status to families were predictors of HIV positivity. Background: In 2020, as the Global Polio Eradication Initiative worked to address outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus Type 2, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, the Covid-19 pandemic suspended routine immunization campaigns worldwide. There were concerns about how Covid-19 – and the introduction of Covid-19 vaccines – might influence uptake of the oral polio vaccine (OPV). To inform communications strategies, we conducted a qualitative study to explore insights from community stakeholders into how Covid-19 influenced perceptions of OPV and vaccination campaigns. Methods: We conducted 32 focus group discussions with caregivers of children under 5 and polio frontline workers as well as 22 in-depth interviews with healthcare practitioners and social influencers in Cameroon and Ethiopia. In each country, we purposively sampled stakeholders per discrete eligibility criteria from one urban (Yaoundé and Addis Ababa) and one peri-urban site (Bafia and Adama). Results: We found that the Covid-19 pandemic and related precautionary measures introduced new challenges for OPV campaigns in Cameroon and Ethiopia, including reduced caregiver confidence in routine immunizations and an erosion of trust between caregivers and frontline workers. A salient concern among caregivers was that Covid-19 vaccines might be delivered in place of OPV. When asked how to maximize community support for future OPV campaigns, stakeholders suggested to rebuild caregiver trust for frontline workers; use a variety of information sources to ensure consistent messaging on vaccination reaches caregivers in a timely manner; increase remuneration, resources, and training for frontline workers; and leverage existing community influencers and groups. Conclusions: Despite the challenges to vaccination campaigns experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was anticipated that the Polio Programme would continue to experience community support for OPV with appropriate messaging and community coordination. These efforts would "build back the confidence" among caregivers and other community stakeholders regarding community-based vaccination campaigns. Social and behavior change approaches that leverage clear, consistent messaging from multiple trusted platforms could address caregiver trust and dismantle mis/dis-information that creates confusion surrounding vaccines. Background: Although pharmaceutical care has tangible positive importance in ensuring patient pharmacotherapy safety, its provision encounters several barriers. Therefore, this study investigated the obstacles pharmacy professionals faced while providing pharmaceutical care in Motta town, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 30, 2022, to August 30, 2022, at all community and hospital pharmacies in Motta town, Northwest Ethiopia. The data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed via SPSS version 26.0. Descriptive statistics and statistical analysis tests, such as the independent t-test, variance, and multiple linear regressions, were employed to analyze the data. Results: The study had a 97.7% response rate. Among the 130 participants, 71 (54.6%) were females. The mean (± SD) total score of pharmaceutical care provision barriers was 85.06 (± 20.2). The highest and lowest mean subscale scores of pharmaceutical care provision barriers were related to lack of resources and skill, respectively. Among resource-related barriers, lack of time and money, lack of trained staff, and lack of private space for consultation scored higher than other barriers. Concerning vision/attitudinal barriers, patients and other healthcare workers' inappropriate attitudes toward pharmaceutical care obtained the highest scores. The lack of clinical education in pharmaceutical care, lack of communication, and lack of documentation skills of pharmacists scored higher than other barriers in the educational and skill-related barriers subscales. For the regulatory/environmental subscale, a lack of clinical practice guidelines and legal barriers scored higher than the other subscales did. Pharmaceutical care provision barriers were significantly associated with age (B = 14.008), years of practice (B = 13.009), and graduating institution (B=-16.773). Conclusions: Resource and attitudinal/vision-related barriers were reported to be the most common barriers to pharmaceutical care implementation. Stakeholders should work together to develop strategic solutions to overcome these barriers and thus achieve optimal pharmaceutical care provision. These strategies should include optimizing the number of trained pharmacy staff, time and financial problems should be resolved, communication and documentation skills should be improved, pharmacy layouts should incorporate private counseling rooms, policies that support the pharmacist's role in patient care should be developed, and effective training and continuing professional education programs should be offered. Background: Herbal medicine has been used for the treatment of human and livestock ailments since ancient times. Numerous rural and urban communities in Ethiopia practice traditional medicine and transfer the knowledge verbally from generation to generation. Thus, this study was conducted to document the traditional medicinal plants and associated indigenous knowledge in Dibatie district, Metekel zone, Benishangul Gumuz Regional State, western Ethiopia. Methods: Three hundred seventy-four (374) informants from 11 kebeles (the smallest administrative units) were selected and participated in the data delivery. The ethnobotanical data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews, preference ranking, direct matrix ranking, field observation, market surveys, and focus group discussions, including voucher specimen collections. The ethnobotanical data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage), ranking, comparison, and quantitative ethnobotanical techniques such as informant consensus factor, fidelity level index, Jaccard's coefficient of similarity, and use value index. Results: A total of 170 plant species were recorded to treat 79 human and 29 livestock ailments. Fabaceae (with 20 species) and Asteraceae (with 18 species) were the most dominant medicinal plant families in the area. Most remedial plants were herbs (61 species, 35.88%), followed by shrubs (39 species, 22.94%). The majority (135 species, 79.41%) of medicinal plants were harvested from wild sources and mainly possessed multiple remedy parts (41.17%) that are usually prescribed in fresh form (60.13%). The most commonly reported human ailment was snake venom, while blackleg was mostly reported among livestock diseases. The herbal medicines were mostly administered orally (52.20%), followed by dermal (17.62%) application. Embelia schimperi Vatke, Glinus lotoides L., Haplosciadium abyssinicum Hochst., Mucuna melanocarpa Hochst. ex A. Rich., and Phragmanthera macrosolen (Steud. ex A. Rich.) M.G.Gilbert had the highest fidelity level values (100%) against the corresponding ailments. Conclusion: The study area is rich in a diversity of potential medicinal plants and associated indigenous knowledge. Thus, appropriate conservation actions and careful utilization are essential to counteract the rise of anthropogenic threats and to ensure the continuity of plants with the related indigenous knowledge. Background: Ensuring the availability of safe drinking water remains a critical challenge in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Therefore, this paper aimed to investigate the prevalence of fecal coliform and E. coli bacteria and, geographical, children availability, and seasonal exposure assessment through a meta-analysis. Methods: Two independent review groups extensively searched internet databases for English-language research articles published between 2013 and 2023. This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines. The methodological quality of each included study was evaluated using the STROBE guidelines. Publication bias was assessed by visual inspection of a funnel plot and then tested by the Egger regression test, and meta-analysis was performed using DerSimonian and Laird random-effects models with inverse variance weighting. Subgroup analyses were also conducted to explore heterogeneity. Results: Out of 48 potentially relevant studies, only 21 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were considered for meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of fecal coliform and E. coli was 64% (95% CI: 56.0–71.0%, I2 = 95.8%) and 54% (95% CI: 45.7–62.3%, I2 = 94.2%), respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence of fecal coliform bacteria increased during the wet season (70%) compared to the dry season (60%), particularly in households with under-five children (74%) compared to all households (61%), in rural (68%) versus urban (66%) areas, and in regions with high prevalence such as Amhara (71%), Gambela (71%), and Oromia (70%). Similarly, the prevalence of E. coli was higher in households with under-five children (66%) than in all households (46%). Conclusions: The analysis highlights the higher prevalence of fecal coliform and E. coli within households drinking water, indicating that these bacteria are a significant public health concern. Moreover, these findings emphasize the critical need for targeted interventions aimed at improving drinking water quality to reduce the risk of fecal contamination and enhance public health outcomes for susceptible groups, including households with under-five children, in particular geographical areas such as the Amhara, Gambela, and Oromia regions, as well as rural areas, at point-of-use, and during the rainy season. Background: The ability of an expert's item difficulty ratings to predict test-taker actual performance is an important aspect of licensure examinations. Expert judgment is used as a primary source of information for users to make prior decisions to determine the pass rate of test takers. The nature of raters involved in predicting item difficulty is central to set credible standards. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and compare raters' prediction and actual Multiple-Choice Questions' difficulty of the undergraduate medicine licensure examination (UGMLE) in Ethiopia. Method: 815 examinees' responses to 200 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) were used in this study. The study also included experts' item difficulty ratings of seven physicians who participated in the standard settings of UGMLE. Then, analysis was conducted to understand experts' rating variation in predicting the actual difficulty levels of examinees. Descriptive statistics was used to profile the mean rater's and actual difficulty value for MCQs, and ANOVA was used to compare the mean differences between raters' prediction of item difficulty. Additionally, regression analysis was used to understand the interrater variations in item difficulty predictions compared to the actual difficulty. The proportion of variance of actual difficulty explained from rater prediction was computed using regression analysis. Results: In this study, the mean difference between raters' prediction and examinees' actual performance was inconsistent across the exam domains. The study revealed a statistically significant strong positive correlation between the actual and predicted item difficulty in exam domains eight and eleven. However, a non-statistically significant very weak positive correlation was reported in exam domains seven and twelve. The multiple comparison analysis showed significant differences in mean item difficulty ratings between raters. In the regression analysis, experts' item difficulty ratings of the UGMLE had 33% power in predicting the actual difficulty level. The regression model also showed a moderate positive correlation (R = 0.57) that was statistically significant at F (6, 193) = 15.58, P = 0.001. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the complex process for assessing the difficulty level of MCQs in the UGMLE and emphasized the benefits of using experts' ratings in advance. To ensure the exams maintain the necessary reliable and valid scores, raters' accuracy on the UGMLE must be improved. Background: Over the past years, there has been a growing concern that a considerable amount of anti-malarial supply in the underdeveloped world particularly in the private sector, is of poor quality. The World Health Organization (WHO) has received about 1500 reports that mentions instances of substandard and falsified products since 2013. The majority of the reports concerned antibiotics and anti-malarials. The majority of reports (42%) originate from the WHO African region. Objective: This study intends to assess the quality of the most widely used anti-malarial medications [artemether-lumefantrine tablets, chloroquine phosphate tablets, primaquine phosphate tablets, artesunate, and artemether injections] in Gambella, South-West, Ethiopia. Methods: A total of 52 samples were collected on June 2022 from Gambella National Regional State, Ethiopia. Half of the districts (six) located in the four zones of the region were chosen using simple random sampling technique. All drug retail outlets available in the selected districts (locally known as woredas) were included. The samples were subjected to visual inspection with a tool adopted from the joint WHO/FIP/ USP checklist. The pharmacopeial tests for identification, uniformity of dosage forms, assay, thickness, diameter, hardness, friability, disintegration test, dissolution, and sterility tests were carried out according to the USP 44-NF 39 and International Pharmacopoeia 11th edition, 2022 monographs. Results and Discussion: Only 25% of the samples were registered on the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA's) electronic regulatory/ registration system (ERIS). Besides, 88.8% of artemether injection products were presented in clear glass ampoules. This might expose the products to photochemical degradation that leads to in loss of anti-plasmodial activity. In addition, 50% of the artemether products assessed were not bioequivalent with the comparator product in the in vitro dissolution comparison tests. Overall, the study findings reveal a high prevalence (58.3%) of substandard anti-malarial drugs in the region. The stated percent of the samples had failed in one or more of the quality test parameters assessed in this study. Conclusion: The study findings reveal a high prevalence (58.3%) of substandard anti-malarial drugs in the region. Only a quarter were registered and 38% of the unregistered products failed the quality tests. Background: The onset of menopause leads to diminished estrogen exposure, resulting in a high morbidity burden related to menopausal symptoms. Menopausal hormonal therapy is an effective therapy that offers more advantages than disadvantages for women aged less than 60 years or who have had menopause for less than 10 years. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of menopausal symptoms, identify factors associated with menopausal symptoms, and assess the use of menopausal hormone therapy among women aged 40–60 who visited the gynecological clinics of three hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2022 to June 2022 at Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Tikur Anbessa Hospital, and Zewditu Memorial Hospital on 296 middle-aged women. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and analyzed for sociodemographic factors, utilization of menopausal hormone therapy, and prevalence of menopausal symptoms using the menopause rating scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of each subscale of menopausal symptoms. The strength of the association was measured using odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, and statistical significance was set at a value of P < 0.05. Result: The prevalence of menopausal symptoms was 89.9%. According to the menopausal rating scale, the frequency of reported symptoms was hot flushes (54.7%), muscle and joint pain (32.1%) on the somatic subscale; physical and mental exhaustion (55.1%), irritability (48.6%) on psychological subscale; and sexual problems (41.3%), bladder problems (39.2%) on urogenital subscale. This study also showed that the age of women [aOR: 0.317, 95%CI (0.102, 0.990)], and monthly family income [aOR = 0.182, 95% CI (0.041, 0.912)] were significantly associated with somatic menopausal symptoms. There was no utilization of menopausal hormonal therapy to treat menopausal symptoms and to prevent complications. Conclusion: The prevalence of menopausal symptoms is high; however, the utilization of individualized administration of menopausal hormone therapy according to symptoms is negligible. Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is among the world's most serious public health threats, causing immense human suffering and death. In Ethiopia, little is known about the barriers and facilitators of visceral leishmaniasis case management. This study aimed to explore such barriers and facilitators in the Amhara Regional State, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted on 16 purposively selected patients and key informants from May 8 to June 2, 2023. The study participants were recruited using the maximum variation technique. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and translated into English. Thematic analysis was employed using Atlas.ti 9 software with a blended approach of both deductive and inductive coding. Results: The study identified a variety of issues that hinder the success of visceral leishmaniasis case management. Treatment centers face frequent interruptions of medicinal supplies, a lack of funding, and a lack of trained healthcare providers. A lack of support from health authorities, including weak supervision and feedback systems, is also a source of concern. Most patients receive treatments after significant delays, which is primarily due to low awareness, poor surveillance, and misdiagnosis by healthcare workers. The case management is further constrained by malnutrition, VL-HIV co-infection, and other comorbidities. Despite these issues, we found that effective collaboration between hospital units and VL treatment centers, acceptance by hospitals, and the caring attitude of healthcare workers play a positive role in facilitating the program's effectiveness. Conclusions: Despite the existence of certain efforts that facilitate the program's effectiveness, VL remains largely neglected, with little government attention or intervention. Such inattention is the root cause of most of the issues. Background: In Ethiopia, there were an estimated 670,906 people living with the Human Immune Virus (HIV). Implementing an HIV test and treat strategy and rapid scale-up of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) provided health facilities increased the number of the number of people living with HIV/AIDS. In the same way, the expansion of viral load monitoring in these health facilities and poor adherence to ART increase the number of high-viral load (HVL) patients. To alleviate this problem, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended EAC intervention for HVL patients. Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine the level of healthcare providers' adherence to the EAC intervention protocol and explore barriers and facilitators of the intervention in West Amhara, Northwest Ethiopia. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study design with concurrent mixed-method evaluation was employed. The adherence dimension, with its sub-dimensions of content, coverage, frequency, and duration of the EAC intervention, was used with sixteen indicators. A total of 20 high-case-load public health facilities and 173 HVL patients were included in our study. Quantitative data was entered into Epi Info and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Descriptive statistics are analyzed in terms of frequencies, percentages, variances, and means and presented as narrations, frequency tables, graphs, and charts. Qualitative data were transcribed, translated, coded, and analyzed thematically using Open Code version 4.0 software. The qualitative findings were used to triangulate the quantitative findings. Result: The average adherence level of health care providers (HCPs) to the EAC intervention protocol was 55.3%, from which content, coverage, frequency, and duration of the intervention contributed 70.3%, 86.3%, 36.9%, and 27.7%, respectively. Most of the intervention contents were delivered during the session, but none of the providers developed a patient adherence plan at the end of the session. All HVL patients were linked and enrolled in the EAC intervention. But only 6% of them were tested for repeat VL. Conclusion: The average adherence level of HCPs to the EAC intervention protocol was very inadequate. The main gap identified was difficulties in completing the EAC intervention sessions based on schedules. Implementing adherence improvement strategies, assigning an adequate number of EAC providers in ART and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) clinics, and allowing sufficient time during EAC sessions are important. Background: Efficiency, equity and financial risk protection are key health systems objectives. Equitable distribution of health care is among the priority strategic initiative of the government of Ethiopia. However, data on the distribution of interventions benefits or on disease burden disaggregated by subpopulations to guide health care priority setting is not available in Ethiopia. Methods: Aligned with policy documents, we identified the following groups to be the worse off in the Ethiopian context: under-five children, women of reproductive age, the poor, and rural residents. We used the Delphi technique by a panel of 28 experts to assign a score for 253 diseases/conditions over a period of two days, in phases. The expert panel represented different institutes and professional mix. Experts assigned a score 1 to 4; where 4 indicates disease/condition predominantly affecting the poor and rural residents and 1 indicates a condition more prevalent among the wealthy and urban residents. Subsequently, the average equity score was computed for each disease/condition. Results: The average scores ranged from 1.11 (for vitiligo) to 3.79 (for obstetric fistula). We standardized the scores to be bounded between 1 and 2; 1 the lowest equity score and 2 the highest equity score. The scores for each disease/condition were then assigned to their corresponding interventions. We used these equity scores to adjust the CEA values for each of the interventions. To adjust the CEA values for equity, we multiplied the health benefits (the denominator of the cost-effectiveness value) of each intervention by the corresponding equity scores, resulting in equity adjusted CEA values. The equity adjusted CEA was then used to rank the interventions using a league table. Conclusions: The Delphi method can be useful in generating equity scores for prioritizing health interventions where disaggregated data on the distribution of diseases or access to interventions by subpopulation groups are not available. Background: Hypertension is a recognized risk factor that underlies the epidemic of cardiovascular diseases. Guidelines, including those from the European Society of Hypertension, recommend opportunistic screening for hypertension in all adults. However, there have been no institution-based studies on the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors with an opportunistic screening program in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension and its associated factors in an opportunistic screening program in Ethiopia. Methods: This was an institution-based cross-sectional study conducted on adult participants in an opportunistic hypertension screening program at Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 1, 2023, to February 1, 2024. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, constructed as per the WHO STEPwise approach to non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS). The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26. Descriptive analysis was used to compile the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the participants, and logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with hypertension. Results: A total of 301 adult participants were included in this study. The mean age of the participants was 47.6 years (standard deviation: 13.5), and 62.5% were males. The prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension was 36.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.6, 66.8). Male sex (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.06, 95% (CI): 1.05, 4.04), being married (AOR = 4.8, 95% CI: 1.84, 2.77) or widowed (AOR = 5.14, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.46), less frequent intake of vegetables and/or fruits [< 3 days per week (AOR = 2.88, 95% CI: 1.12, 7.39), and 3 to 5 days per week (AOR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.02, 4.86)], physical inactivity (AOR = 2.26, 95% CI: 1.21, 4.22), and body mass index (AOR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.26), had significant associations with hypertension. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of newly diagnosed hypertension in an opportunistic screening program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It also revealed that most of the factors significantly associated with hypertension were modifiable, underscoring the importance of promoting lifestyle changes. Most importantly, expanding institution-based opportunistic screening programs could be an effective approach to maximize the detection of hypertension and improve access to its treatment. Background: Inappropriate complementary feeding is widely practiced in low and middle income countries. These contribute to undernutrition, morbidity and mortality among young children. The incidence of malnutrition in the first two years of life has been directly linked with inappropriate complementary feeding practices along with high infectious disease levels. Objective: To assess the level of inappropriate complementary feeding practice and associated factors among children aged 6 to 23 months in Shashemene, Southern Ethiopia. Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July to August 2021 among 609 children aged 6 to 23 months paired with their caregivers. Systematic random sampling was used to identify study participants. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 25 software. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of inappropriate complementary feeding practice. Statistical significance was determined using Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Results: The prevalence of inappropriate complementary feeding practice among children aged 6–23 months was 55.3%. Being a mother under the age of 25 years [AOR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.30, 3.31], aged 25–34 years [AOR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.14, 2.91], having an occupation [AOR = 2.73, 95% CI: 1.84, 4.05], and households where husbands' are the sole decision makers on their income [AOR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.54, 3.77] increased the chance of inappropriate complementary feeding practice. On the other hand, mother's whose infants were aged 9–11 months [AOR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.19–0.45] were less likely to practice inappropriate complementary feeding. Conclusions: The prevalence of inappropriate complementary feeding practice in the study area was high compared to the WHO recommendation. Child's age, maternal age, maternal occupation, and decision-making role on income were found to be associated with inappropriate complementary feeding practice. Appropriate behavioral change communication to family and community decision-makers, and involvement of husbands in infant and young child feeding practice are recommendable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a second major global public health problem and the leading infectious cause of death in Ethiopia. Patients under directly observed treatment short-courses (DOTs) have a higher treatment success rate and reduced drug resistance. A successful treatment outcome and adherence to the treatment are related to patient satisfaction with the DOT strategy. Client satisfaction is one of the indicators of the quality of care. In this perspective, there were limited studies in Ethiopia related to patient satisfaction with the DOTs strategy in the prevention and control of TB to achieve the ''END TB Strategy." Therefore, this study was aimed at identifying the TB patients' satisfaction with the DOTs strategy and associated factors in Gamo Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study design for quantitative data and a phenomenological approach were employed for qualitative data. The calculated sample size was 374. A systematic random sampling method was used to select study participants. A pre-tested structured interviewer-administered questionnaire for quantitative data and focus group discussions (FGDs) for qualitative data were used for data collection. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were used. The determinants with a p-value < 0.05 were declared to have a significant association with the outcome variable, and an adjusted odd ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used. Results: A total of 358 patients participated in the study, with a response rate of 95.72%. The majority of study participants' ages ranged between 25 and 34 years. The tuberculosis DOT satisfaction rate was 61.17% [56.10-66.25%, 95%CI]. The TB patients who took treatment for 20 weeks or more were 3.97 times [AOR = 3.97; 95% CI (1.55–10.16)] more likely to be satisfied with the DOTs service provided. However, the participants who perceived transport costs as high were 79% [AOR = 0.21; 95% CI (0.06–0.71)] less likely to be satisfied with DOTs. Qualitatively, the participants reported that there was a major problem with laboratory services, which resulted in delays and long appointments to get the results in addition to lack of clean toilets and safe water to swallow medications. Conclusion: The satisfaction rate for tuberculosis DOTs observed in this study appears to be relatively lower in comparison to other studies. Availing DOTs service nearby patients to enhance the accessibility of the service is crucial to improving patients' satisfaction with DOTs service. Reducing laboratory result delays by improving laboratory service is essential to enhancing patients' satisfaction with DOTs. Background: The way the healthcare delivery system is reflected by patient satisfaction. Establishing a health system with better results depends on it. It has been assumed that higher patient satisfaction levels correlate with quality healthcare outcomes. There is little national data to support patient satisfaction with inpatient health services in Ethiopia. In order to estimate the pooled proportion of patient satisfaction and determine the associated factors with inpatient health services at public hospitals, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed in the extraction of the data. To get the included studies, the following electronic databases were searched: Pub-Med, Google Scholar, Med-Line, Web of Science, Scopus and Repositories. Software called STATA version 17 was used to analyze statistical data using the random effects model. Forest plots were used to display the pooled results. Results: Of the 1583 records resulted in electronic databases searching, 11 studies with 3,958 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The estimated pooled proportion of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services was found to be 57.4% (95% CI: 50.88–64.59, I2 = 95.25%). Assuring privacy for patients (OR = 7.44, 95% CI: 3.63–15.25, I2 = 0.0%), availability of direction signs (2.96, 95% CI: 1.91–4.57, I2 = 0.0%), providing adequate information (OR = 3.27, 95% CI: 1.63–6,58, I2 = 65.60%), history of previous admission (OR = 0.29, 0.18–0.46, I2 = 86.36%) and providing on time treatment (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.21–2.20, I2 = 86.36%) were statistically significant factors associated with patient satisfaction with inpatient health services. Conclusion: The estimated pooled level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health services is low in Ethiopia. A higher level of patient satisfaction with inpatient health treatments was predicted by factors such as privacy assurance, fast services, availability of direction signs, provision of services with adequate information transfer, and no history of previous admission. To improve patient satisfaction, the Ministry of Health and hospital administration must place a strong emphasis on ensuring the provision of high-quality, standard-based inpatient healthcare.
