2. The roles of short-term plasticity and synaptic weights in self-organized criticality

Abstract

Neuronal avalanches represent one important way in which the network dynamics of neural systems may be propagated. Experiments utilizing multi-channel recordings of neural cultures have shown that the sizes of neuronal avalanches follow a power-law distribution, which is a key feature of a self-organized criticality [1]. Although self-organized criticality provides certain advantages for the processing of neural information in neural networks [1-3], the underlying mechanisms of these dynamics remain unclear. One hypothesis is that synaptic plasticity is the major prerequisite for self-organized criticality [4,5]. In the present study, we focused on the roles of short-term plasticity and the relationship between synaptic weights and self-organized criticality. We simulated neural networks consisting of 300 simple integrate-and-fire neurons with all-to-all connections. Each synapse had depressive short-term plasticity and random initial synaptic weights. Small external currents were injected into individual neurons that were randomly selected at each step, and the sizes of the neuronal avalanches at each step were recorded. After approximately two million steps, the synaptic weights were altered by short-term plasticity, the sizes of the neuronal avalanches followed a power-law distribution, and a pattern of converging exponents was observed. To investigate the effects of synaptic weights on self-organized criticality, neural networks were re-simulated without short-term plasticity; instead, the synaptic weights from the above simulation, which had been altered by short-term plasticity, were used. In this simulation, the sizes of the neuronal avalanches did not follow a power-law distribution, and the exponents of the power function always remained between -1.2 and -1.9. The same results were observed for randomly connected neural networks. Although the synaptic weights of the simulated neural networks adjusted when the neural networks exhibited a self-organized criticality, neuronal avalanche size did not follow a power-law distribution when short-term plasticity was turned off. These results show that the key mechanism for self-organized criticality is synaptic plasticity rather than synaptic weights. Therefore, it is important that short-term plasticity be maintained in neural networks to ensure self-organized criticality.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in network structural properties and functional perturbations of the C. elegans network which were induced by simulated lesions of the neural network through removals of each single neuron (attacks). We analyzed complete neuronal wiring data (i.e. connectome) of the nematode C. elegans [1] consisting of 279 neurons (nodes) and their connections (edges). We constructed the circular wiring diagram of simply combined network of gap junctions and chemical synapses as shown Figure ​Figure1.1. Then, we measured several measures of complex network properties of directed weighted neuronal network of C. elegans to examine the effect of single node attack: the clustering coefficient, global efficiency, isolated nodes, and reachability [2]. We found that the deletions of motor neurons and interneurons were more effective to the clustering coefficient of the network than the sensory neurons. Eliminations of some interneurons mainly decreased global efficiency, and remarkably increased global efficiencies were induced by each removal of sensory neurons (see Table ​Table1).1). We suggest that this complex network analysis of the c. elegans connectome is helpful for understanding the potential functions of all neurons, and provide insight into which neurons are crucial for specific functions and which neurons are critical for lethality of the network information processing. Abstract

The article investigates the contribution of different ion channels to circadian rhythms. It was found that the circadian firing rates are modulated by the change in channel conductance from high regular firing to low irregular firing. and by the sodium currents. The leak potassium currents and fast delayed rectifier currents restrict the circadian firing range and regulation of interspike intervals. The change in diurnal firing rates is due to the diurnal change in the channel conductance.

5. Recovery of computation capability for neural networks from damaged states using self-organized criticality.

Abstract

The article presents an investigation of the computational capability for the neural networks to recover their functions when damage through lesion or aging. It states the construction of 300 integrate-and-fire neurons with random connections. The investigation uses dynamic synapses model so that the neural networks will exhibit a self-organized criticality. It confirms that the features of self-organized criticality in the damaged neural networks could be maintained by dynamic synapses.
