We developed a shape-changing constructive kit, named Mimosa1. A key component of the toolkit is the modular hinges, each of which is equipped with two antagonistic shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. One wire deforms the hinge to approach its predetermined angle at high temperature, and another wire drives the hinge back when it cools down. Hinge leaves are available in different materials including acrylic, cardboard and textile, which increases the versatility of the toolkit. Every hinge weighs 2.1-5.4 g, and generates up to 5.7 N actuation force. A Bluetooth control module was developed, enabling remote control of the shape-changing objects. Mimosa aims to inspire designers to explore and create interactive shape-morphing objects with SMAs. A few examples are given such as a gripper, a rolling robot, a butterfly, an airplane and a self-closing pocket. The Pelvic Chair uses soft robotics to gently touch the outer pelvic floor to create awareness of its anatomy and function. Our pelvic floor is an important muscle group that holds up our inner organs. A soma design approach makes out a novel route to know through our senses what an experience in this context feels like, which can provide alternative ways of being in the world. Through annotated imagery, we explore the affordances of soft latex pockets filled with air to convey touch that is appropriate for this intimate, sensitive area. Iteratively, we investigate how layers of materials, area, shape, volume and temporality, together with the specific placement on the body, convey the kinds of experiential qualities we seek. Current transformational developments in automotive user interface (UI) technology are causing a shift in emphasis from safety and efficiency to emotion and flexibility. The many factors to consider in parallel make this a difficult process, in which technological affordances all too easily push the user to the background. To address this issue, this paper introduces an interaction model linking the different tangible control elements, including smartphone functionality, and shows how non-driving-related activities (e.g. climate control, multimedia access) can be represented physically. Next, a working prototype is presented that supports the design and development of novel tactile UIs. By integrating layers of sensors and actuators, a flexible UI is created that pushes technology to the background, giving proper attention to the user again and enabling effective research on how to make the digital world tangible for users., Materials and Manufacturing, Aerospace Structures & Materials
