With the continued digitization of societal processes, we are seeing an explosion in available data. This is referred to as big data. In a research setting, three aspects of the data are often viewed as the main sources of challenges when attempting to enable value creation from big data: volume, velocity, and variety. Many studies address volume or velocity, while fewer studies concern the variety. Metric spaces are ideal for addressing variety because they can accommodate any data as long as it can be equipped with a distance notion that satisfies the triangle inequality. To accelerate search in metric spaces, a collection of indexing techniques for metric data have been proposed. However, existing surveys offer limited coverage, and a comprehensive empirical study exists has yet to be reported.We offer a comprehensive survey of existing metric indexes that support exact similarity search: we summarize existing partitioning, pruning, and validation techniques used by metric indexes to support exact similarity search; we provide the time and space complexity analyses of index construction; and we offer an empirical comparison of their query processing performance. Empirical studies are important when evaluating metric indexing performance, because performance can depend highly on the effectiveness of available pruning and validation as well as on the data distribution, which means that complexity analyses often offer limited insights. This article aims at revealing strengths and weaknesses of different indexing techniques to offer guidance on selecting an appropriate indexing technique for a given setting, and to provide directions for future research on metric indexing. In many practical settings it is useful to find a small unsatisfiable subset of a given unsatisfiable set of constraints. We study this problem from a parameterized complexity perspective, taking the size of the unsatisfiable subset as the natural parameter where the set of constraints is either (i) given a set of clauses, i.e., a formula in conjunctive normal Form (CNF), or (ii) as an instance of the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). In general, the problem is fixed-parameter intractable. For an instance of the propositional satisfiability problem (SAT), it was known to be W[1]-complete. We establish A[2]-completeness for CSP instances, where A[2]-hardness prevails already for the Boolean case. With these fixed-parameter intractability results for the general case in mind, we consider various restricted classes of inputs and draw a detailed complexity landscape. It turns out that often Boolean CSP and CNF formulas behave similarly, but we also identify notable exceptions to this rule. The main part of this article is dedicated to classes of inputs that are induced by Boolean constraint languages that Schaefer [1978] identified as the maximal constraint languages with a tractable satisfiability problem. We show that for the CSP setting, the problem of finding small unsatisfiable subsets remains fixedparameter intractable for all Schaefer languages for which the problem is non-trivial. We show that this is also the case for CNF formulas with the exception of the class of bijunctive (Krom) formulas, which allows for an identification of a small unsatisfiable subset in polynomial time. In addition, we consider various restricted classes of inputs with bounds on the maximum number of times that a variable occurs (the degree), bounds on the arity of constraints, and bounds on the domain size. For the case of CNF formulas, we show that restricting the degree is enough to obtain fixed-parameter tractability, whereas for the case of CSP instances, one needs to restrict the degree, the arity, and the domain size simultaneously to establish fixed-parameter tractability. Finally, we relate the problem of finding small unsatisfiable subsets of a set of constraints to the problem of identifying whether a given variable-value assignment is entailed or forbidden already by a small subset of constraints. Given a graph G and an integer k, the Feedback Vertex Set (FVS) problem asks if there is a vertex set T of size at most k that hits all cycles in the graph. The first fixed-parameter algorithm for FVS in undirected graphs appeared in a monograph of Mehlhorn in 1984. The fixed-parameter tractability (FPT) status of FVS in directed graphs was a long-standing open problem until Chen et al. (STOC '08, JACM '08) showed that it is fixed-parameter tractable by giving a 4kk! · nO(1) time algorithm. There are two subset versions of this problems: We are given an additional subset S of vertices (resp., edges), and we want to hit all cycles passing through a vertex of S (resp., an edge of S); the two variants are known to be equivalent in the parameterized sense. Recently, the Subset FVS problem in undirected graphs was shown to be FPT by Cygan et al. (ICALP'11, SIDMA'13) and independently by Kakimura et al. (SODA '12). We generalize the result of Chen et al. (STOC '08, JACM '08) by showing that a Subset FVS in directed graphs can be solved in time 2O(k³)ċnO(1) (i.e., FPT parameterized by size k of the solution). By our result, we complete the picture for FVS problems and their subset versions in undirected and directed graphs. The technique of random sampling of important separators was used by Marx and Razgon (STOC '11, SICOMP '14) to show that Undirected Multicut is FPT, and it was generalized by Chitnis et al. (SODA '12, SICOMP '13) to directed graphs to show that Directed Multiway Cut is FPT. In addition to proving the FPT of a Directed Subset FVS, we reformulate the random sampling of important separators technique in an abstract way that can be used with a general family of transversal problems. We believe this general approach will be useful for showing the FPT of other problems in directed graphs. Moreover, we modify the probability distribution used in the technique to achieve better running time; in particular, this gives an improvement from 22O(k) to 2O(k²) in the parameter dependence of the Directed Multiway Cut algorithm of Chitnis et al. Clustering a graph means identifying internally dense subgraphs that are only sparsely interconnected. Formalizations of this notion lead to measures that quantify the quality of a clustering and to algorithms that actually find clusterings. Since, most generally, corresponding optimization problems are hard, heuristic clustering algorithms are used in practice, or other approaches that are not based on an objective function. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive experimental evaluation of the qualitative behavior of greedy bottom-up heuristics driven by cut-based objectives and constrained by intracluster density, using both real-world data and artificial instances. Our study documents that a greedy strategy based on local movement is superior to one based on merging. We further reveal that the former approach generally outperforms alternative setups and reference algorithms from the literature in terms of its own objective, while a modularity-based algorithm competes surprisingly well. Finally, we exhibit which combinations of cut-based inter- and intracluster measures are suitable for identifying a hidden reference clustering in synthetic random graphs and discuss the skewness of the resulting cluster size distributions. An algorithm for parallel generation of a random permutation of a large set of distinct integers is presented. This algorithm is designed for massively parallel systems with distributed memory architectures and the MPI-based runtime environments. Scalability of the algorithm is analyzed according to the memory and communication requirements. An implementation of the algorithm in a form of a software library based on the C++ programming language and the MPI application programming interface is further provided. Finally, performed experiments are described and their results discussed. The biggest of these experiments resulted in a generation of a random permutation of 241 integers in slightly more than four minutes using 131072 CPU cores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
