The article presents a report that describes the work carried out as part of the ad-hoc retrieval track which were presented at the workshop at the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval (INEX) retrieval held in Shloss Dagstuhl, Germany on November 28 to 30, 2005. It presents a summary of the papers presented at the workshop, including a paper by P. Ogilvie and J. Callan that describes an extension to their previous INEX work in using hierarchical language models for ranking XML elements. The test collection, which is a result of the collaborative effort of the workshop participants, is also described, together with the employed evaluation measures. The outcome of the working group discussions at the workshop are reported.

The article presents a summary of the contents of the twelve presentations at the 2005 Association for Computing Machinery Workshop on Geographical Information Retrieval (GIR) held in Bremen, Germany on November 2005. The first three papers addressed the subject of visualisation in GIR, including a paper that described a method for modifying the amount of retrieved information that is presented to a user in a way that adapts to the user's expected interests. Two papers addressed the identification of the geographical scope through the use of Web pages and related data. A paper reviewed different approaches to indexing and ranking in GIR as part of the route to developing a spatially aware Portuguese geographic search engine.

The article reports on the Conference on Information and Knowledge Management 2005 Workshop on Information Retrieval in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks held on November 4, 2005 in Bremen, Germany. The calls for papers for the workshop on information retrieval in peer-to-peer networks attracted 15 submissions, from which 6 papers were accepted for presentation. Hans Friedrich Witschel presented a paper that dealt with Evaluating Profiling and Query Expansion Methods for P2P Information Retrieval while Massimo Melucci presented An Evaluation of a Recursive Weighting Scheme for Information Retrieval in Peer-to-Peer Networks.
