Abstract Objective To evaluate the satisfaction of family caregivers with a mental health inpatient service in Brazil. Methods This was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A sample of 80 caretaking family members answered the abbreviated version of the Brazilian Mental Health Services’ Family Satisfaction scale (SATIS-BR) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Categorical variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages and quantitative variables as means and standard deviations. Interactions among variables and indexes of the scale were analyzed using the Student’s t test, Pearson correlation coefficient and analysis of variance. Results The results showed a high mean overall satisfaction score when considering the categorization of the items of the scale, with higher satisfaction indexes in the ‘Treatment results’ subscale and lower ones in the ‘Reception and competence of staff’ and ‘Privacy and confidentiality’ subscales. In the comparison of the samples studied, greater scores were observed in general satisfaction and in factors in the medical residency care model than in the attending psychiatrist model. There were no significant differences in terms of family member satisfaction in relation to sociodemographic variables. Conclusion Family member satisfaction was high. The need for improvement in aspects related to the infrastructure of services was evident. This paper underlines the importance of continuous and regular evaluations of the services provided, focusing on the satisfaction of users and family members in order to better understand the factors that contribute towards the quality of care provided.

Introduction: Instruments aimed to investigate general aspects of quality of life are scarce in the literature. Flanagan’s Quality of Life Scale (QoLS) is an alternative instrument which provides a more comprehensive evaluation of quality of life in different contexts. Objective: To investigate some psychometric properties of the QoLS and discuss the measurement of quality of life using this scale in heterogeneous and large populations. Methods: The QoLS comprises 16 items divided into five dimensions. Responses were measured using a 7-point rating scale. Data were collected from a stratified sample of primary health care users in the municipality of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Polychoric correlation matrix and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed. Results: A total of 1,054 primary health care users in 12 health care facilities were interviewed: 79.7% female; mean age = 36.97 years (standard deviation = 15.1). Moderate to low correlation coefficients were observed between almost all pairs of QoLS items. Items 7 and 9 as well as items 14 and 15 were the pairs presenting the highest correlation coefficient. The original structure of the QoLS, with five dimensions, showed adequate psychometric properties regarding the data collected. The inclusion of a single item on life satisfaction was proposed. Conclusion: The original structure of the QoLS was validated and found to be reliable when applied to primary health care users. A new general item was suggested for future studies to improve the interpretations and associations regarding general aspects of quality of life in large and heterogeneous populations. Objective: To describe the process of cross-cultural adaptation of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) to the Brazilian context. Methods: Cross-cultural adaptation involved the steps of independent translation of the instrument, synthesis version, and back-translation. Analysis of content validity was conducted by a multidisciplinary expert committee and consisted of quantitative assessment of agreement indicators. The test was then applied to a target population. Results: All the steps required for a cross-cultural adaptation were followed and satisfactory agreement values (≥ 4.75) were reached for most of the structures assessed. Most of the changes suggested by the experts were followed; these changes consisted primarily of adjustments to verb tense and agreement and the inclusion of letters and words to allow gender inflection. In the pre-test, no suggestions were made and the instrument was considered comprehensible. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the PID-5 was found to be adequate to the Brazilian context from semantic, idiomatic, cultural, and conceptual perspectives. The Brazilian version assessed here can be freely used, was approved by the publishers who hold the copyright on the instrument, and is considered the official version of the instrument. Introduction: Health problems may negatively affect the psychological and physical aspects of life, influencing the quality of life of older adults. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of physical activity on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in the elderly population. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 200 elderly people of both genders. Subjects were divided into two groups: one with 100 senior citizens engaged in physical activities in a social center for the elderly; and another composed of 100 subjects who lived in the community but were not engaged in physical activities. The instruments used to assess physical activities, quality of life, and anxiety and depression were, respectively: the modified Baecke questionnaire; the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36); and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The data were analyzed using the Student's t test, Pearson's r, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), with odds ratio and a 5% significance level (p<0.05). Results: We observed that the active group showed higher scores of physical activity and quality of life. Conversely, the sedentary group revealed higher scores of anxiety and depression. Data assessment revealed a strong correlation between the domains quality of life, level of vitality, and mental health (r=0.77). The prevalence ratio showed that physical activity is a protective factor against anxiety and depression in the elderly. Conclusion: The findings suggest a correlation between low levels of physical activity and symptoms of anxiety and depression in the elderly living in the community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the adaptation of a revised Brazilian version of the Patient Competency Rating Scale (PCRS-R-BR), which focuses on executive, mnemonic, and attention functions. Evidence of content-based and external validity is also reported. The cross-cultural adaptation was conducted in five phases: 1) translations and back translations; 2) item analysis by authors; 3) classification by experts; 4) revisions and reformulations by authors; 5) pilot study with a sample of patients with mild and moderate/severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Data were analyzed descriptively, and the PCRS-R-BR scores of groups with mild vs. moderate/severe TBI were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. Patients and their relatives were divided into groups and compared using repeated-measures analysis. The results of the PCRS-R-BR questionnaire for relatives and discrepancy scores of patients with moderate/severe TBI revealed significantly more impairment than that found in the group of patients with mild TBI. There were significant differences between item and total scores of both groups of patients and relatives. Results indicated a high level of item content agreement between experts. This study found initial evidence of PCRS-R-BR content-based and external validity when the questionnaire was applied to patients with mild and moderate/severe TBI and their relatives.

Objective: To present the process of cross-cultural adaptation of the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2) for the Brazilian context. Method: The following stages were used: translation into Brazilian Portuguese by independent translators, elaboration of a synthesis version, back-translation, evaluation by experts and pretest with target population. Results: All the stages of cross-cultural adaptation were completed, and in the majority of items evaluated, good concordance between experts was obtained (≥ 80%). Suggested adjustments were compiled into the consensus version by the two authors, with the resulting material being considered adequate in the pretest (and thus no further changes were needed). Termed as "Escala de Ansiedade Esportiva-2," the final version was considered by the main author of the original scale as an official version in Brazilian Portuguese. Conclusions: In view of the fulfilment of all steps suggested for the cross-cultural adaptation process, the SAS-2 is now available in Brazilian Portuguese to be tested for its psychometric qualities. INTRODUCTION: The Obsessional Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44) is a self-administered instrument comprised of 44 items, designed to assess the beliefs of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The objective of this study was to describe the process of translation and adaption of the questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese. METHOD: For the translation and adaptation of the OBQ-44, we first obtained authorization from the authors of the original scale to use the instrument. Subsequently, the scale was independently translated from English into Brazilian Portuguese by two health professionals with proficiency in English. Following comparison of the two translations, a preliminary version was obtained and tried out on a sample of 20 patients with a primary diagnosis of OCD. This pretest aimed to assess the patients' understanding of the items and to make any necessary language adaptations. Then, the scale was independently back-translated by two psychiatrists, also with proficiency in English. Following comparison of the two back-translations, a final version in English was developed; this version was evaluated and approved by the authors of the original instrument. RESULTS: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the OBQ-44, after the process of translation and adaptation here described, showed to be of easy interpretation by patients with different educational levels. The instrument can therefore be used to assess patients from different Brazilian socioeconomic contexts. CONCLUSION: OBQ-44 is a self-administered instrument of easy application. Therefore, it can be useful in the identification of dysfunctional beliefs in OCD patients, contributing toward a better understanding of the role played by such beliefs in the onset and maintenance of the disorder.INTRODUÇÃO: O Obsessional Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44) é um instrumento autorrespondido composto por 44 itens que avaliam as crenças de pacientes com transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo (TOC). O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever o processo de tradução e adaptação da referida escala para o português do Brasil. MÉTODO: Para o processo de tradução e adaptação do OBQ-44, primeiramente foi obtida licença de uso da escala junto aos autores do instrumento original. Em seguida, a escala foi traduzida de inglês para português brasileiro de forma independente por dois profissionais de saúde com fluência em inglês. Comparando-se as duas escalas traduzidas, obteve-se uma versão preliminar, que foi aplicada a uma amostra de 20 pacientes com diagnóstico principal de TOC, visando observar sua compreensão e realizar adaptações de linguagem. A seguir, a escala foi retrotraduzida de forma independente por dois psiquiatras, também fluentes na língua inglesa. Comparadas as duas retrotraduções, gerou-se uma versão final em língua inglesa; esta versão foi avaliada e aprovada pelos autores do instrumento original. RESULTADOS: A versão em português do Brasil do OBQ-44, após sua tradução e adaptação, demonstrou ser de fácil compreensão por parte de pacientes de diferentes níveis educacionais. Portanto, a escala pode ser utilizada em pacientes das diversas classes econômicas e sociais que caracterizam o Brasil. CONCLUSÃO: O OBQ-44, por ser um instrumento autoaplicável e de fácil compreensão, pode ser útil na identificação de crenças disfuncionais em pacientes com TOC, auxiliando na compreensão do papel dessas crenças na origem e manutenção do transtorno.

Initially, two researchers translated the original version of the scale into Brazilian Portuguese. Next, a native English speaker performed the back-translation. Quantitative and qualitative criteria were used to evaluate the intelligibility of items. Five specialists compared the original and translated versions and assessed the degree of equivalence between them in terms of semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual aspects. The degree of agreement between the specialists was measured using the content validity coefficient (CVC). Finally, 28 volunteers from the target population were interviewed in order to assess their level of comprehension of the items. Results: CVCs for items from both scales were satisfactory for all criteria. The mean comprehension scores were above the cutoff point established. Overall, the results showed that the adapted versions' items had adequate rates of equivalence in terms of concepts and semantics. Conclusions: The translation and adaptation processes were successful for both scales, resulting in versions that are not only equivalent to the originals, but are also intelligible for the population at large.
