The aquatic metabolism comprises production and mineralization of organic matter through biological processes, such as primary production and respiration that can be estimated by gases concentration in the water column. AIM: The study aimed to assess the temporal variability of pCO2 and pO2 in the littoral zone of a subtropical coastal lake. Our hypotheses are i) high variability in meteorological conditions, such as temperature and light, drive the high variability in pCO2 and pO2, and ii) the lake is permanently heterotrophic due to the low phosphorus concentration. METHODS: We estimated pCO2 from pH-alkalinity method, and pO2 from dissolved oxygen concentration and water temperature measured in free-water during 24 hours in the autumn, winter, spring and summer. RESULTS: Our findings showed that limnological variables had low temporal variability, while the meteorological variables and pCO2 presented a high coefficient of variation, which is representative of each climatic season. In autumn and winter, it was recorded that the lake was supersaturated in CO2 relative to the atmosphere, while in spring and summer CO2 concentration was below the concentration found in the atmosphere. Over 24 hours, pCO2 also showed high variability, with autumn presenting higher concentration during the night when compared to daytime. Water temperature and chlorophyll a were negatively correlated with pCO2, while pO2 was positively correlated with wind and light. CONCLUSION: Agreeing with our first hypothesis, pCO2 showed an expressive temporal variation in a subtropical lake associated to the high variability in meteorological conditions. On the other hand, our second hypothesis was not confirmed, since Peri Lake exported CO2 to the atmosphere in some periods and in others, CO2 was removed from the atmosphere. O metabolismo aquático envolve os processos de produção e mineralização da matéria orgânica através de processos biológicos, tais como produção primária e respiração, que podem ser estimados através da concentração de gases na coluna d’água. OBJETIVO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar a variabilidade temporal da pCO2 e da pO2 na zona litorânea de uma lagoa costeira subtropical, tendo como hipótese que i) a alta variabilidade nas condições meteorológicas, tais como temperatura e luz, direcionam a elevada variabilidade na pCO2 e pO2 e que ii) o ambiente é permanentemente heterotrófico devido à baixa concentração de fósforo. MÉTODOS: Nós estimamos a pCO2 através do método pH-alcalinidade, e a pO2 a partir da concentração de oxigênio dissolvido e temperatura da água, medidos em água livre, durante 24 horas, no outono, inverno, primavera e verão. RESULTADOS: Nossos resultados mostraram que as variáveis limnológicas amostradas apresentaram baixa variabilidade temporal, porém as variáveis meteorológicas e a pCO2 apresentaram elevado coeficiente de variação, refletindo a variação em cada estação amostrada. No outono e no inverno foi registrado que o ambiente foi supersaturado em CO2 em relação à atmosfera, enquanto na primavera e no verão a concentração de CO2 foi abaixo da concentração encontrada na atmosfera. Ao longo de 24 horas, a pCO2 também se apresentou variável, sendo que no outono ocorreu maior pCO2 durante a noite que durante o dia. A pCO2 foi correlacionada negativamente com a temperature da água e a concentração de clorofila a, enquanto que a pO2 foi positivamente correlacionada com o vento e a luz. CONCLUSÃO: De acordo com a nossa primeira hipótese, a pCO2 apresentou expressiva variação temporal na zona litorânea de um lago costeiro subtropical, juntamente com a alta variabilidade das condições meteorológicas. Entretanto, nossa segunda hipótese não foi confirmada uma vez que em alguns períodos ocorreu um balanço líquido de liberação de CO2 para a atmosfera, enquanto em outros períodos ocorreu absorção de CO2 da atmosfera.

AIMS: The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of chironomids in subtropical streams and (ii) to investigate the importance of environmental predictors in the distribution of this group. METHODS: Samples were collected in four annual seasons between 2010 and 2011, in 10 streams located in an agricultural matrix in southern Brazil, using a Surber sampler. Organisms were identified to the genus level. Some environmental variables were analysed in the sampling sites of the Chironomidae. The variations in abundance and diversity were compared by Analysis of Variance, whereas the community composition was analysed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance. A Redundance Analysis was used to evaluate the effect of environmental variables on the chironomid community. RESULTS: 7,349 individuals were identified, belonging to three subfamilies (Chironominae, Tanypodinae and Orthocladiinae) and 57 genera. The abundance and richness of the Chironomidae were similar between sites and seasons. However, the composition varied spatially and temporally (p < 0.001). Water temperature, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and carbon:nitrogen ratio were variables that influenced the chironomid community. The genera Thienemanniela, Pentaneura, Paratanytarsus, Parapentaneura, Parametriocnemus, Hudsonimyia, Labrundinea and Larsia were present in summer, whereas Parakiefferiella, Paramerina, Metriocnemus were indicators for winter. CONCLUSIONS: The spatial distribution of chironomids was directly related to the environmental conditions of the sampling sites. The temporal variation in the community followed a pattern in relation to water temperature. The variables physical and chemical operate as environmental filters and thereby alter the chironomid community. OBJETIVOS: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a distribuição espacial e temporal dos Chironomidae em riachos subtropicais e investigar a importância dos preditores ambientais na distribuição deste grupo. MÉTODOS: As coletas foram realizadas nas quatro estações anuais entre 2010 e 2011, em dez riachos localizados em matriz agrícola no sul do Brasil, utilizando um amostrador Surber. Os organismos foram identificados até nível de gênero. Algumas variáveis ambientais foram analisadas nos locais de coleta dos Chironomidae. As variações entre abundância e riqueza foram comparadas por meio de uma ANOVA, enquanto que a composição da comunidade foi analisada por meio de uma MANOVA. Uma RDA foi utilizada para avaliar o efeito das variáveis ambientais sobre a comunidade de Chironomidae. RESULTADOS: foram identificados 7,349 indivíduos pertencentes a três subfamílias (Chironominae, Tanypodinae e Orthocladiinae) e 57 gêneros. A abundância e riqueza de Chironomidae foram similares entre os locais e estações do ano. No entanto, a composição variou espacial e temporalmente (p < 0.001). Temperatura da água, carbono orgânico total, nitrogênio total e relação carbono:nitrogênio foram as variáveis que influenciaram a comunidade de Chironomidae. Houve a indicação dos gêneros Thienemanniela, Pentaneura, Paratanytarsus, Parapentaneura, Parametriocnemus, Hudsonimyia, Labrundinea e Larsia para o verão, enquanto que: Parakiefferiella, Paramerina, Metriocnemus foram indicadores para a estação do inverno. CONCLUSÕES: a distribuição espacial dos Chironomidae esteve diretamente relacionada com as condições ambientais dos locais. A variação temporal observada na comunidade seguiu um padrão em relação à temperatura da água. As variáveis físicas e químicas avaliadas podem estar operando como filtros ambientais e com isso alteram a comunidade de Chironomidae.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to study the vertical variation in phytoplankton community in a subtropical coastal lake and to verify the temporal variation of this community following variation in temperature and dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus. METHODS: Sampling of phytoplankton and abiotic variables were performed monthly from June/2009 to January/2011 at four depths from the central part of Peri Lake. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance, correlation and canonical correspondence analysis. RESULTS: Vertical variation in the phytoplankton community and limnological data did not occur but temporal variation was found. The lake was limited by light and nutrients and this light limitation selected the Cyanobacteria species from Sn and S1 functional groups. Phytoplankton community was composed of five groups, with 31 freshwater taxa, in which Cyanobacteria was the most important with 87.7% of total density and Chlorophyta with 11.8%. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii was dominant during almost the whole study period because when temperature and phosphorus increased and wind speed decreased Limnothrix sp. density was boosted. Different species of Cyanobacteria filamentous showed correlation with variables in different ways, indicating that some species can co-exist, each of them having distinct niches or can compete by the same resource. CONCLUSION: The phytoplankton presented periodicity driven by annual change in water temperature and nutrients availability. Peri Lake's features allow for the occurrence of a vertically homogeneous water column and the dominance of cyanobacterial functional groups adapted to low underwater light and nutrients deficiency OBJETIVO: Nosso objetivo foi estudar a variação vertical da comunidade fitoplanctônica em uma lagoa costeira subtropical e como se comporta frente às variações temporais de nutrientes e temperatura. MÉTODOS: Para isso, amostras mensais de fitoplâncton total foram coletadas em quatro profundidades distintas de um ponto central da lagoa do Peri durante o período de junho/09 a janeiro/11, juntamente com as variáveis abióticas. Análises univariadas de variância, correlação e multivariada de correspondência canônica foram usadas para explorar os dados. RESULTADOS: Os dados obtidos da comunidade fitoplanctônica e as demais variáveis limnológicas mostraram ausência de variação vertical na coluna d'água, no entanto ocorreu variação temporal nesse ambiente subtropical. A lagoa do Peri foi limitada por luz e por nutrientes, selecionando a ocorrência de espécies de Cyanobacteria pertencentes aos grupos funcionais Sn e S1. A comunidade fitoplanctônica foi composta por cinco grupos, com 31 taxa de água doce, sendo que Cyanobacteria, com 87,7% da densidade total foi o grupo mais importante e Chlorophyta com 11,8% foi o segundo grupo mais representativo. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii foi a espécie dominante durante quase todo o período estudado, sendo substituída por Limnothrix sp. quando ocorreu diminuição na velocidade do vento e aumento na temperatura e na concentração de fósforo. As várias espécies filamentosas de Cyanobacteria registradas neste ambiente mostraram diferentes correlações com as variáveis amostradas, sugerindo que algumas espécies podem co-existir, e outras competir pelo mesmo recurso. CONCLUSÃO: As principais variáveis responsáveis pela variação temporal observada na comunidade fitoplanctônica foram nitrogênio, fósforo e temperatura. Cyanobacteria foi o principal constituinte do fitoplâncton, sendo representado por grupos funcionais adaptados à baixa disponibilidade de luz e baixa concentração de nutrientes
