- Abstract
The article examines the influence of politics on the increase in the number of elective surgical services in New Zealand. The government spending in elective surgery rose from 35 million U.S. dollars in 2008 to 271.5 million U.S. dollars in 2012. Ian Powell of Association of Salaried Medical Specialists said the key criticisms in the health sector are elective surgery and emergency department waiting times and access to cancer services. The pros and cons of elective surgery are cited.
