Context. It is well-established that shock waves in the intracluster medium launched by galaxy cluster mergers can produce synchrotron emission, which is visible to us at radio frequencies as radio relics. However, the particle acceleration mechanism producing these relics is still not fully understood. It is also unclear how relics relate to radio halos, which trace merger-induced turbulence in the intracluster medium. Aims. We aim to perform the first statistical analysis of radio relics in a mass-selected sample of galaxy clusters, using homogeneous observations. Methods. We analysed all relics observed by the Low Frequency Array Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144 MHz, hosted by galaxy clusters in the second Planck catalogue of SZ sources (PSZ2). We measured and compared the relic properties in a uniform, unbiased way. In particular, we developed a method to describe the characteristic downstream width in a statistical manner. Additionally, we searched for differences between radio relic-hosting clusters with and without radio halos. Results. We find that, in our sample, $\sim$ 10% of galaxy clusters host at least one radio relic. We confirm previous findings, at higher frequencies, of a correlation between the relic-cluster centre distance and the longest linear size, as well as the radio relic power and cluster mass. However, our findings suggest that we are still missing a population of low-power relics. We also find that relics are wider than theoretically expected, even with optimistic downstream conditions. Wide-field radio continuum observations of galaxy clusters are revealing an increasing number of spiral galaxies hosting tens of kpc-long radio tails produced by the nonthermal interstellar medium being displaced by the ram pressure. We present a semi-empirical model for the multi-frequency radio continuum emission from ram pressure stripped tails based on the pure synchrotron cooling of a radio plasma moving along the stripping direction with a uniform velocity. We combine LOFAR and uGMRT observations at 144 and 400 MHz to study the flux density and spectral index profiles of the radio tails of 7 galaxies in Abell 2255, and use the model to reproduce the flux density and spectral index profiles, and infer the stripped radio plasma velocity. For 5 out of 7 galaxies we observe monotonic decrease in both flux density and spectral index up to $~30$ kpc from their stellar disk. Our model reproduces the observed trends with a radio plasma bulk projected velocity between 160 and 430 km s$^{-1}$. This result represents the first indirect measure of the stripped, nonthermal interstellar medium velocity. The observed spectral index trends indicate that the synchrotron cooling is faster than the adiabatic expansion losses, thus suggesting that the stripped radio plasma can survive for a few tens of Myr outside of the stellar disk. This provides a lower limit for the lifetime of the stripped ISM outside of the disk. As a proof of concept, we use the best-fit velocities to constrain the galaxies' 3D velocity in the cluster to be in the 300-1300 km s$^{-1}$. We estimate the ram pressure affecting these galaxies to be between 0.1 and 2.9 $\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-3}$, and measure the inclination between their stellar disk and the ram pressure wind., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. Radio halos are diffuse synchrotron sources observed in dynamically unrelaxed galaxy clusters. Current observations and models suggest that halos trace turbulent regions in the intra-cluster medium where mildly relativistic particles are re-accelerated during cluster mergers. Due to the higher luminosities and detection rates with increasing cluster mass, radio halos have been mainly observed in massive systems ($M_{500} \gtrsim 5 \times10^{14}$ M$_\odot$). Here, we report the discovery of a radio halo with a largest linear scale of $\simeq$750 kpc in PSZ2G145.92-12.53 ($z=0.03$) using LOFAR observations at 120$-$168 MHz. With a mass of $M_{500} = (1.9\pm0.2) \times 10^{14}$ M$_\odot$ and a radio power at 150 MHz of $P_{150} = (3.5 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{23}$ W/Hz, this is the least powerful radio halo in the least massive cluster discovered to date. Additionally, we discover a radio relic with a mildly convex morphology at $\sim$1.7 Mpc from the cluster center. Our results demonstrate that LOFAR has the potential to detect radio halos even in low-mass clusters, where the expectation to form them is very low ($\sim$5%) based on turbulent re-acceleration models. We present the first sub-mJy ($\approx0.7$ mJy beam$^{-1}$) survey to be completed below 100 MHz, which is over an order of magnitude deeper than previously achieved for widefield imaging of any field at these low frequencies. The high resolution ($15 \times 15$ arcsec) image of the Bo��tes field at 34-75 MHz is made from 56 hours of observation with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Low Band Antenna (LBA) system. The observations and data reduction, including direction-dependent calibration, are described here. We present a radio source catalogue containing 1,948 sources detected over an area of $23.6$ deg$^2$, with a peak flux density threshold of $5��$. Using existing datasets, we characterise the astrometric and flux density uncertainties, finding a positional uncertainty of $\sim1.2$ arcsec and a flux density scale uncertainty of about 5 per cent. Using the available deep 144-MHz data, we identified 144-MHz counterparts to all the 54-MHz sources, and produced a matched catalogue within the deep optical coverage area containing 829 sources. We calculate the Euclidean-normalised differential source counts and investigate the low-frequency radio source spectral indices between 54 and 144 MHz, both of which show a general flattening in the radio spectral indices for lower flux density sources, from $\sim-0.75$ at 144-MHz flux densities between 100-1000 mJy to $\sim-0.5$ at 144-MHz flux densities between 5-10 mJy, due to a growing population of star forming galaxies and compact core-dominated AGN., 15 pages, 17 figures. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is an ideal instrument to conduct deep extragalactic surveys. It has a large field of view and is sensitive to large scale and compact emission. It is, however, very challenging to synthesize thermal noise limited maps at full resolution, mainly because of the complexity of the low-frequency sky and the direction dependent effects (phased array beams and ionosphere). In this first paper of a series we present a new calibration and imaging pipeline that aims at producing high fidelity, high dynamic range images with LOFAR High Band Antenna data, while being computationally efficient and robust against the absorption of unmodeled radio emission. We apply this calibration and imaging strategy to synthesize deep images of the Bootes and LH fields at 150 MHz, totaling $\sim80$ and $\sim100$ hours of integration respectively and reaching unprecedented noise levels at these low frequencies of $\lesssim30$ and $\lesssim23$ $\mu$Jy/beam in the inner $\sim3$ deg$^2$. Radio synchrotron emission from the bridges of low-density gas connecting galaxy clusters and groups is a challenge for particle acceleration processes. In this work, we analyse the Coma radio bridge using new LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 144 MHz. LOFAR detects the bridge and its substructures with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. We find that the radio emission peaks on the NGC 4839 group. Towards the halo, in front of the NGC 4839 group, the radio brightness decreases and streams of radio emission connect the NGC 4839 group to the radio relic. Using X-ray observations, we find that thermal and non-thermal plasma are moderately correlated with a sub-linear scaling. We use archival radio data at 326 MHz to constrain the spectral index in the bridge, and quantify the distribution of particles and magnetic field at different frequencies. We find that the spectrum is steeper than $-1.4 \pm 0.2$, and that the emission could be clumpier at 326 MHz than at 144 MHz. Using cosmological simulations and a simplified approach to compute particle acceleration, we derive under which conditions turbulent acceleration of mildly relativistic electrons could generate the radio emission in the bridge. Assuming that the initial energy ratio of the seed electrons is $3 \cdot 10^{-4}$ with respect to the thermal gas, we are able to reproduce the observed luminosity. We present new 144-MHz LOFAR observations of the prototypical `X-shaped' radio galaxy NGC 326, which show that the formerly known wings of the radio lobes extend smoothly into a large-scale, complex radio structure. We argue that this structure is most likely the result of hydrodynamical effects in an ongoing group or cluster merger, for which pre-existing X-ray and optical data provide independent evidence. The large-scale radio structure is hard to explain purely in terms of jet reorientation due to the merger of binary black holes, a previously proposed explanation for the inner structure of NGC 326. For this reason, we suggest that the simplest model is one in which the merger-related hydrodynamical processes account for all the source structure, though we do not rule out the possibility that a black hole merger has occurred. Inference of the black hole-black hole merger rate from observations of X-shaped sources should be carried out with caution in the absence of deep, sensitive low-frequency observations. Some X-shaped sources may be signposts of cluster merger activity, and it would be useful to investigate the environments of these objects more generally., 7 pages, 2 colour figures. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena) is the X-ray observatory large mission selected by the European Space Agency (ESA), within its Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme, to address the "Hot and Energetic Universe" scientific theme (Nandra et al. 2013), and it is provisionally due for launch in the early 2030s. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is the next generation radio observatory and consists of two telescopes, one comprised of dishes operating at mid frequencies (SKA1-MID) and located in South Africa, and the other comprised of Log-Periodic antennas operating at low radio frequencies (SKA1-LOW), which will be located in Australia (Braun et al. 2017). The scientific commissioning of the radio telescope is planned to begin in 2021-2022. The SKA-Athena Synergy Team (SAST) has been tasked to single out the potential scientific synergies between Athena and SKA. The astrophysical community was involved in this exercise primarily through a dedicated SKA-Athena Synergy Workshop, which took place on April 24-25, 2017 at SKAO, Jodrell Bank, Manchester. The final result of the synergy exercise, this White Paper, describes in detail a number of scientific opportunities that will be opened up by the combination of Athena and SKA, these include: 1. the Cosmic Dawn; 2. the Evolution of black holes and galaxies; 3. The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) is an ongoing sensitive, high-resolution 120-168 MHz survey of the Northern sky with diverse and ambitious science goals. Many of the scientific objectives of LoTSS rely upon, or are enhanced by, the association or separation of the sometimes incorrectly catalogued radio components into distinct radio sources, and the identification and characterisation of the optical counterparts to these sources. Here we present the source associations and optical and/or IR identifications for sources in the first data release, which are made using a combination of statistical techniques and visual association and identification. We document in detail the colour- and magnitude-dependent likelihood ratio method used for statistical identification as well as the Zooniverse project, called LOFAR Galaxy Zoo, used for the visual classification. We describe the process used to select which of these two different methods is most appropriate for each LoTSS source. The final LoTSS-DR1-IDs value-added catalogue presented contains 318,520 radio sources, of which 231,716 (73%) have optical and/or IR identifications in Pan-STARRS and WISE. We have conducted a deep survey (with a central rms of $55��\textrm{Jy}$) with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) at 120-168 MHz of the Bo��tes field, with an angular resolution of $3.98^{''}\times6.45^{''}$, and obtained a sample of 10091 radio sources ($5��$ limit) over an area of $20\:\textrm{deg}^{2}$. The astrometry and flux scale accuracy of our source catalog is investigated. The resolution bias, incompleteness and other systematic effects that could affect our source counts are discussed and accounted for. The derived 150 MHz source counts present a flattening below sub-mJy flux densities, that is in agreement with previous results from high- and low- frequency surveys. This flattening has been argued to be due to an increasing contribution of star-forming galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei. Additionally, we use our observations to evaluate the contribution of cosmic variance to the scatter in source counts measurements. The latter is achieved by dividing our Bo��tes mosaic into 10 non-overlapping circular sectors, each one with an approximate area of $2\:\textrm{deg}^{2}.$ The counts in each sector are computed in the same way as done for the entire mosaic. By comparing the induced scatter with that of counts obtained from depth observations scaled to 150MHz, we find that the $1��$ scatter due to cosmic variance is larger than the Poissonian errors of the source counts, and it may explain the dispersion from previously reported depth source counts at flux densities $S, A\&A in press. 15 pages, 16 figures

The gas-solid budget of carbon in protoplanetary disks is related to the composition of the cores and atmospheres of the planets forming in them. The key gas-phase carbon carriers CO, C$^{0}$ and C$^{+}$ can now be observed in disks. The gas-phase carbon abundance in disks has not yet been well characterized, we aim to obtain new constraints on the [C]/[H] ratio in a sample of disks, and to get an overview of the strength of [CI] and warm CO emission. We carried out a survey of the CO$\,6$--$5$ and [CI]$\,1$--$0$ and $2$--$1$ lines towards $37$ disks with APEX, and supplemented it with [CII] data from the literature. The data are interpreted using a grid of models produced with the DALI code. We also investigate how well the gas-phase carbon abundance can be determined in light of parameter uncertainties. The CO$\,6$--$5$ line is detected in $13$ out of $33$ sources, the [CI]$\,1$--$0$ in $6$ out of $12$, and the [CI]$\,2$--$1$ in $1$ out of $33$. With deep integrations, the first unambiguous detections of [CI]~$1$--$0$ in disks are obtained, in TW~Hya and HD~100546. Gas-phase carbon abundance reductions of a factor $5$--$10$ or more can be identified robustly based on CO and [CI] detections. The atomic carbon detection in TW~Hya confirms a factor $100$ reduction of [C]/[H]$_{\rm gas}$ in that disk, while the data are consistent with an ISM-like carbon abundance for HD~100546. In addition, BP~Tau, T~Cha, HD~139614, HD~141569, and HD~100453 are either carbon-depleted or gas-poor disks. The low [CI]~$2$--$1$ detection rates in the survey mostly reflect insufficient sensitivity to detect T~Tauri disks. The Herbig~Ae/Be disks with CO and [CII] upper limits below the models are debris disk like systems. A roughly order of magnitude increase in sensitivity compared to our survey is required to obtain useful constraints on the gas-phase [C]/[H] ratio in most of the targeted systems., Comment: 8 figures, accepted for publication in A\&A

We present the first wide area (19 deg$^2$), deep ($\approx120-150$ ��Jy beam$^{-1}$), high resolution ($5.6 \times 7.4$ arcsec) LOFAR High Band Antenna image of the Bo��tes field made at 130-169 MHz. This image is at least an order of magnitude deeper and 3-5 times higher in angular resolution than previously achieved for this field at low frequencies. The observations and data reduction, which includes full direction-dependent calibration, are described here. We present a radio source catalogue containing 6276 sources detected over an area of $19$\,deg$^2$, with a peak flux density threshold of $5��$. As the first thorough test of the facet calibration strategy, introduced by van Weeren et al., we investigate the flux and positional accuracy of the catalogue. We present differential source counts that reach an order of magnitude deeper in flux density than previously achieved at these low frequencies, and show flattening at 150 MHz flux densities below 10 mJy associated with the rise of the low flux density star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN., 29 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will transform our understanding of the role of the cold, atomic gas in galaxy evolution. The interstellar medium (ISM) is the repository of stellar ejecta and the birthsite of new stars and, hence, a key factor in the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Cold, diffuse, atomic clouds are a key component of the ISM, but so far this phase has been difficult to study, because its main tracer, the HI 21 cm line, does not constrain the basic physical information of the gas (e.g., temperature, density) well. The newly discovered galaxy cluster 1RXS J0603.3+4214 hosts a 1.9 Mpc long, bright radio relic with a peculiar linear morphology. Using hydrodynamical +N-body AMR simulations of the merger between three initially hydrostatic clusters in an idealised setup, we are able to reconstruct the morphology of the radio relic. Based on our simulation, we can constrain the merger geometry, predict lensing mass measurements and X-ray observations. Comparing such models to X-ray, redshift and lensing data will validate the geometry of this complex merger which helps to constrain the parameters for shock acceleration of electrons that produces the radio relic., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

Multiwavelength studies of radio relics at merger shocks set powerful constraints on the relics origin and formation mechanism. However, for X-ray observations, a main difficulty is represented by the low X-ray surface brightness far out in the cluster outskirts, where relics are typically found. Here, we present XMM-Newton results from a 130-ks observation of CIZA J2242.8+5301, a cluster at z=0.19 that hosts a double radio relic. We focus on the well-defined northern relic. There is a difference of ~55% between the temperature we measure behind the relic, and the temperature measured with Suzaku. Galaxy clusters grow by mergers with other clusters and galaxy groups. These mergers create shock waves within the intracluster medium (ICM) that can accelerate particles to extreme energies. In the presence of magnetic fields, relativistic electrons form large regions emitting synchrotron radiation, so-called radio relics. Behind the shock front, synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) losses cause the radio spectral index to steepen away from the shock front. An example of such a cluster is CIZA J2242.8+5301, where very clear spectral steepening in the downstream region is observed. Here we present hydrodynamical simulations of idealized binary cluster mergers with the aim of constraining the merger scenario for this cluster. From our simulations, we find that CIZA J2242.8+5301 is probably undergoing a merger in the plane of the sky (less then 10 deg from edge-on) with a mass ratio of about 2:1, and an impact parameter < 400 kpc. We find that the core passage of the clusters happened about 1 Gyr ago. We conclude that double relics relics can set constraints on the mass ratios, impact parameters, timescales, and viewing geometry of binary cluster mergers, which is particularly useful when detailed X-ray observations are not available. In addition, the presence of large radio relics can be used to constrain the degree of clumping in the outskirts of the ICM, which is important to constrain the baryon fraction, density and entropy profiles, around the virial radius and beyond. We find that the amplitude of density fluctuations, with sizes of < 200 kpc, in the relic in CIZA J2242.8+5301 is not larger than 30%. This contribution reports on the status of LOFAR (the LOw Frequency ARray) in its ongoing commissioning phase. The purpose is to illustrate the progress that is being made, often on a daily basis, and the potential of this new instrument, which is the first "next-generation" radio telescope. Utilizing a novel phased-array design, LOFAR is optimized for the largely unexplored low frequency range: 10 - 240 MHz. The construction of LOFAR in the Netherlands is almost complete and 8 international stations have already been deployed as well. The wide field-of-view and multi-beam capabilities, in combination with sub-milliJansky sensitivity at arcsec (and sub-arcsec) resolution, are unprecedented at these frequencies. We have used the SINFONI integral field spectrograph to map the near-infrared K-band emission lines of molecular and ionised hydrogen in the central regions of two cool core galaxy clusters, Abell 2597 and Sersic 159-03. Gas is detected out to 20 kpc from the nuclei of the brightest cluster galaxies and found to be distributed in clumps and filaments around it. The ionised and molecular gas phases trace each other closely in extent and dynamical state. Both gas phases show signs of interaction with the active nucleus. Within the nuclear regions the kinetic luminosity of this gas is found to be somewhat smaller than the current radio luminosity. Outside the nuclear region the gas has a low velocity dispersion and shows smooth velocity gradients. There is no strong correlation between the intensity of the molecular and ionised gas emission and either the radio or X-ray emission. The molecular gas in Abell 2597 and Sersic 159-03 is well described by a gas in local thermal equilibrium (LTE) with a single excitation temperature T_exc ~ 2300 K. The emission line ratios do not vary strongly as function of position, with the exception of the nuclear regions where the ionised to molecular gas ratio is found decrease. We present new, deep observations of the Phoenix cluster from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Karl Jansky Very Large Array. These data provide an order of magnitude improvement in depth and/or angular resolution at X-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths, yielding an unprecedented view of the core of the Phoenix cluster. We find that the one-dimensional temperature and entropy profiles are consistent with expectations for pure-cooling hydrodynamic simulations and analytic descriptions of homogeneous, steady-state cooling flow models. In the inner ~10 kpc, the cooling time is shorter by an order of magnitude than any other known cluster, while the ratio of the cooling time to freefall time approaches unity, signaling that the ICM is unable to resist multiphase condensation on kpc scales. When we consider the thermodynamic profiles in two dimensions, we find that the cooling is highly asymmetric. The bulk of the cooling in the inner ~20 kpc is confined to a low-entropy filament extending northward from the central galaxy. We detect a substantial reservoir of cool (10^4 K) gas (as traced by the [OII] doublet), which is coincident with the low-entropy filament. The bulk of this cool gas is draped around and behind a pair of X-ray cavities, presumably bubbles that have been inflated by radio jets, which are detected for the first time on kpc scales. These data support a picture in which AGN feedback is promoting the formation of a multiphase medium via a combination of ordered buoyant uplift and locally enhanced turbulence. These processes ought to counteract the tendency for buoyancy to suppress condensation, leading to rapid cooling along the jet axis. The recent mechanical outburst has sufficient energy to offset cooling, and appears to be coupling to the ICM via a cocoon shock, raising the entropy in the direction orthogonal to the radio jets., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures. Centrally located diffuse radio emission has been observed in both merging and non-merging galaxy clusters. Depending on their morphology and size, we distinguish between giant radio haloes, which occur predominantly in merging clusters, and mini haloes, which are found in non-merging, cool-core clusters. Low-frequency sensitive observations are required to assess whether the emission discovered in these few cases is common in galaxy clusters or not. With this aim, we carried out a campaign of observations with the LOw Frequency ARay (LOFAR) in the frequency range 120 - 168 MHz of nine massive clusters selected from the \textit{Planck} SZ catalogue, which had no sign of major mergers. In this paper, we discuss the results of the observations that have led to the largest cluster sample studied within the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey, and we present Chandra X-ray data used to investigate the dynamical state of the clusters, verifying that the clusters are currently not undergoing major mergers, and to search for traces of minor or off-axis mergers. We discover large-scale steep-spectrum emission around mini haloes in the cool-core clusters PSZ1G139 and RXJ1720, which is not observed around the mini halo in the non-cool-core cluster A1413. We also discover a new 570 kpc-halo in the non-cool-core cluster RXCJ0142. We derived new upper limits to the radio power for clusters in which no diffuse radio emission was found, and we discuss the implication of our results to constrain the cosmic-ray energy budget in the ICM. We conclude that radio emission in non-merging massive clusters is not common at the sensitivity level reached by our observations and that no clear connection with the cluster dynamical state is observed. We present VIMOS-VLT spectroscopy of the Frontier Fields cluster MACS~J0416.1-2403 (z=0.397). Taken as part of the CLASH-VLT survey, the large spectroscopic campaign provided more than 4000 reliable redshifts, including ~800 cluster member galaxies. The unprecedented sample of cluster members at this redshift allows us to perform a highly detailed dynamical and structural analysis of the cluster out to ~2.2$r_{200}$ (~4Mpc). Our analysis of substructures reveals a complex system composed of a main massive cluster ($M_{200}$~0.9$\times 10^{15} M_{\odot}$) presenting two major features: i) a bimodal velocity distribution, showing two central peaks separated by $\Delta V_{rf}$~1100 km s$^{-1}$ with comparable galaxy content and velocity dispersion, ii) a projected elongation of the main substructures along the NE-SW direction, with a prominent subclump ~600 kpc SW of the center and an isolated BCG approximately halfway between the center and the SW clump. We also detect a low mass structure at z~0.390, ~10' S of the cluster center, projected at ~3Mpc, with a relative line-of-sight velocity of $\Delta V_{rf}$~-1700 km s$^{-1}$. The cluster mass profile that we obtain through our dynamical analysis deviates significantly from the "universal" NFW, being best fit by a Softened Isothermal Sphere model instead. The mass profile measured from the galaxy dynamics is found to be in relatively good agreement with those obtained from strong and weak lensing, as well as with that from the X-rays, despite the clearly unrelaxed nature of the cluster. Our results reveal overall a complex dynamical state of this massive cluster and support the hypothesis that the two main subclusters are being observed in a pre-collisional phase, in line with recent findings from radio and deep X-ray data. LOFAR, the LOw-Frequency ARray, is a new-generation radio interferometer constructed in the north of the Netherlands and across europe. Utilizing a novel phased-array design, LOFAR covers the largely unexplored low-frequency range from 10-240 MHz and provides a number of unique observing capabilities. Spreading out from a core located near the village of Exloo in the northeast of the Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing completion. A further five stations have been deployed throughout Germany, and one station has been built in each of France, Sweden, and the UK. Digital beam-forming techniques make the LOFAR system agile and allow for rapid repointing of the telescope as well as the potential for multiple simultaneous observations. With its dense core array and long interferometric baselines, LOFAR achieves unparalleled sensitivity and angular resolution in the low-frequency radio regime. The LOFAR facilities are jointly operated by the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) foundation, as an observatory open to the global astronomical community. LOFAR is one of the first radio observatories to feature automated processing pipelines to deliver fully calibrated science products to its user community. LOFAR's new capabilities, techniques and modus operandi make it an important pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We give an overview of the LOFAR instrument, its major hardware and software components, and the core science objectives that have driven its design.
