We delve into the concept of categories with products that distribute over coproducts, which we call doubly-infinitary distributive categories. We show various instances of doubly-infinitary distributive categories aiming for a comparative analysis with established notions such as extensivity, infinitary distributiveness, and cartesian closedness. Our exploration reveals that this condition represents a substantial extension beyond the classical understanding of infinitary distributive categories. Our main theorem establishes that free doubly-infinitary distributive categories are cartesian closed. We end the paper with remarks on non-canonical isomorphisms, open questions, and future work.

We consider the canonical pseudodistributive law between various free limit completion pseudomonads and the free coproduct completion pseudomonad. When the class of limits includes pullbacks, we show that this consideration leads to notions of extensive categories. More precisely, we show that extensive categories with pullbacks and infinitary lextensive categories are the pseudoalgebras for the pseudomonads resulting from the pseudodistributive laws. Moreover, we introduce the notion of doubly-infinitary lextensive category, and we establish that the freely generated such categories are cartesian closed. From this result, we further deduce that, in freely generated infinitary lextensive categories, the objects with a finite number of connected components are exponentiable. We conclude our work with remarks on descent theoretical aspects of this work, along with results concerning non-canonical isomorphisms, and relationship with other work.

The distribution of masses of neutron stars, particularly the maximum mass value, is considered a probe of their formation, evolution and internal physics (i.e., equation of state). This mass distribution could in principle be inferred from the detection of gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers. Using mock catalogues of $10^5$ dark sirens events, expected to be detected by Einstein Telescope over an operational period of $\sim1\, \rm year$ , we show how the biased luminosity distance measurement induced by gravitational lensing affects the inferred redshift and mass of the merger. This results in higher observed masses than expected. Up to $2\%$ of the events are predicted to fall above the maximum allowed neutron star mass depending on the intrinsic mass distribution and signal-to-noise ratio threshold adopted. The underlying true mass distribution and maximum mass could still be approximately recovered in the case of bright standard sirens.

We pose the problem of metastability for a three--state spin system with conservative dynamics. We consider the Blume--Capel model with the Kawasaki dynamics, we prove that, in a particular region of the parameter plane, the metastable state is the unique homogeneous minus state, and we estimate the exit time. To achieve our goal we have to solve several variational problems in the configuration space which result to be particularly involved, due to complicated structure of the trajectories. They key ingredient is the control of the energy differences between the configurations crossed when a spin is transported from the boundary to an internal site of the lattice through a completely arbitrary mixture of the three--state spin species. To master these mechanisms we have introduced a new approach based on the transport of spins along nearest neighbor connected regions of the lattice with constant spin configuration. This novel approach goes beyond the Blume--Capel model and can be used for the study of more general multi--state spin models.

Popular word embedding methods such as GloVe and Word2Vec are related to the factorization of the pointwise mutual information (PMI) matrix. In this paper, we link correspondence analysis (CA) to the factorization of the PMI matrix. CA is a dimensionality reduction method that uses singular value decomposition (SVD), and we show that CA is mathematically close to the weighted factorization of the PMI matrix. In addition, we present variants of CA that turn out to be successful in the factorization of the word-context matrix, i.e. CA applied to a matrix where the entries undergo a square-root transformation (ROOT-CA) and a root-root transformation (ROOTROOT-CA). An empirical comparison among CA- and PMI-based methods shows that overall results of ROOT-CA and ROOTROOT-CA are slightly better than those of the PMI-based methods.

Decision-making processes often involve voting. Human interactions with exogenous entities such as legislations or products can be effectively modeled as two-mode (bipartite) signed networks-where people can either vote positively, negatively, or abstain from voting on the entities. Detecting communities in such networks could help us understand underlying properties: for example ideological camps or consumer preferences. While community detection is an established practice separately for bipartite and signed networks, it remains largely unexplored in the case of bipartite signed networks. In this paper, we systematically evaluate the efficacy of community detection methods on bipartite signed networks using a synthetic benchmark and real-world datasets. Our findings reveal that when no communities are present in the data, these methods often recover spurious communities. When communities are present, the algorithms exhibit promising performance, although their performance is highly susceptible to parameter choice. This indicates that researchers using community detection methods in the context of bipartite signed networks should not take the communities found at face value: it is essential to assess the robustness of parameter choices or perform domain-specific external validation.

Technology-Assisted Review (TAR) aims to reduce the human effort required for screening processes such as abstract screening for systematic literature reviews. Human reviewers label documents as relevant or irrelevant during this process, while the system incrementally updates a prediction model based on the reviewers' previous decisions. After each model update, the system proposes new documents it deems relevant, to prioritize relevant documentsover irrelevant ones. A stopping criterion is necessary to guide users in stopping the review process to minimize the number of missed relevant documents and the number of read irrelevant documents. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new ensemble-based Active Learning strategy and a stopping criterion based on Chao's Population Size Estimator that estimates the prevalence of relevant documents in the dataset. Our simulation study demonstrates that this criterion performs well on several datasets and is compared to other methods presented in the literature.

Background: Genomic instability is a hallmark of cancer, leading to many somatic alterations. Identifying which alterations have a system-wide impact is a challenging task. Nevertheless, this is an essential first step for prioritizing potential biomarkers. We developed CIBRA (Computational Identification of Biologically Relevant Alterations), a method that determines the system-wide impact of genomic alterations on tumor biology by integrating two distinct omics data types: one indicating genomic alterations (e.g., genomics), and another defining a system-wide expression response (e.g., transcriptomics). CIBRA was evaluated with genome-wide screens in 33 cancer types using primary and metastatic cancer data from the Cancer Genome Atlas and Hartwig Medical Foundation. Results: We demonstrate the capability of CIBRA by successfully confirming the impact of point mutations in experimentally validated oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Surprisingly, many genes affected by structural variants were identified to have a strong system-wide impact (30.3%), suggesting that their role in cancer development has thus far been largely underreported. Additionally, CIBRA can identify impact with only ten cases and controls, providing a novel way to prioritize genomic alterations with a prominent role in cancer biology. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that CIBRA can identify cancer drivers by combining genomics and transcriptomics data. Moreover, our work shows an unexpected substantial system-wide impact of structural variants in cancer. Hence, CIBRA has the potential to preselect and refine current definitions of genomic alterations to derive more nuanced biomarkers for diagnostics, disease progression, and treatment response. Affine Diffusion dynamics are frequently used for Valuation Adjustments (xVA) calculations due to their analytic tractability. However, these models cannot capture the market-implied skew and smile, which are relevant when computing xVA metrics. Hence, additional degrees of freedom are required to capture these market features. In this paper, we address this through an SDE with state-dependent coefficients. The SDE is consistent with the convex combination of a finite number of different AD dynamics. We combine Hull-White one-factor models where one model parameter is varied. We use the Randomized AD (RAnD) technique to parameterize the combination of dynamics. We refer to our SDE with state-dependent coefficients and the RAnD parametrization of the original models as the rHW model. The rHW model allows for efficient semi-analytic calibration to European swaptions through the analytic tractability of the Hull-White dynamics. We use a regression-based Monte-Carlo simulation to calculate exposures. In this setting, we demonstrate the significant effect of skew and smile on exposures and xVAs of linear and early-exercise interest rate derivatives.

People routinely rely on data to make decisions, but the process can be riddled with biases. We show that patterns in data might be noticed first or more strongly, depending on how the data is visually represented or what the viewer finds salient. We also demonstrate that viewer interpretation of data is similar to that of ‘ambiguous figures’ such that two people looking at the same data can come to different decisions. In our studies, participants read visualizations depicting competitions between two entities, where one has a historical lead (A) but the other has been gaining momentum (B) and predicted a winner, across two chart types and three annotation approaches. They either saw the historical lead as salient and predicted that A would win, or saw the increasing momentum as salient and predicted B to win. These results suggest that decisions can be influenced by both how data are presented and what patterns people find visually salient.

Street View-level Imagery (SVI) is a valuable data source for studies (e.g., environmental assessments, green space identification or land cover classification). While commercial SVI is available, such providers commonly restrict copying or reuse in ways necessary for research. Open SVI datasets are readily available from less restrictive sources, such as Mapillary, but due to the heterogeneity of the images, these require substantial preprocessing, filtering, and careful quality checks. We present an efficient method for automated downloading, processing, cropping, and filtering open SVI, to be used in a survey of human perceptions of the streets portrayed in these images. We demonstrate our open-source reusable SVI preparation and smartphone-friendly perception-survey software with Amsterdam (Netherlands) as the case study. Using a citizen science approach, we collected from 331 people 22,637 ratings about their perceptions for various criteria. We have published our software in a public repository for future re-use and reproducibility.

Efficiently pricing multi-asset options poses a significant challenge in quantitative finance. The Monte Carlo (MC) method remains the prevalent choice for pricing engines; however, its slow convergence rate impedes its practical application. Fourier methods leverage the knowledge of the characteristic function to accurately and rapidly value options with up to two assets. Nevertheless, they face hurdles in the high-dimensional settings due to the tensor product (TP) structure of commonly employed quadrature techniques. This work advocates using the randomized quasi-MC (RQMC) quadrature to improve the scalability of Fourier methods with high dimensions. The RQMC technique benefits from the smoothness of the integrand and alleviates the curse of dimensionality while providing practical error estimates. Nonetheless, the applicability of RQMC on the unbounded domain, $\mathbb{R}^d$, requires a domain transformation to $[0,1]^d$, which may result in singularities of the transformed integrand at the corners of the hypercube, and deteriorate the rate of convergence of RQMC. To circumvent this difficulty, we design an efficient domain transformation procedure based on the derived boundary growth conditions of the integrand. This transformation preserves the sufficient regularity of the integrand and hence improves the rate of convergence of RQMC. To validate this analysis, we demonstrate the efficiency of employing RQMC with an appropriate transformation to evaluate options in the Fourier space for various pricing models, payoffs, and dimensions. Finally, we highlight the computational advantage of applying RQMC over MC or TP in the Fourier domain, and over MC in the physical domain for options with up to 15 assets.

Our understanding of past evolutionary change is often based on reconstructions based on incomplete data, raising fundamental questions about the degree to which we can make reliable inferences about past evolutionary processes. This was demonstrated by Louca and Pennell (2020), who showed that each pure-birth process can be generated by an infinite number of birth-death processes. Here, I explore what it means to reconstruct past evolutionary change with three approaches from measure theory, group theory, and homotopy theory to better understand structural constraint and origins of (non)identifiability. As an example, the developed framework is applied to the case of birth-death processes.

Using the framework of ambidexterity developed by Hopkins and Lurie, we introduce a parametrized analogue of higher semiadditivity called $\mathcal Q$-semiadditivity, depending on a chosen class of morphisms $\mathcal Q$. Our first main result identifies the free $\mathcal Q$-semiadditive parametrized category on a single generator with a certain parametrized span category $\underline{\mathrm{Span}}(\mathcal Q)$, simultaneously generalizing a result of Harpaz in the non-parametrized setting and a result of Nardin in the equivariant setting. As a consequence, we deduce that the $\mathcal Q$-semiadditive completion of a parametrized category $\mathcal C$ consists of the $\mathcal Q$-commutative monoids in $\mathcal C$, defined as $\mathcal Q$-limit preserving parametrized functors from $\underline{\mathrm{Span}}(\mathcal Q)$ to $\mathcal C$. As our second main result, we provide an explicit `Mackey sheaf' description of the free presentable $\mathcal Q$-semiadditive category. Using this, we reprove the Mackey functor description of global spectra first obtained by the second-named author and generalize it to $G$-global spectra. Moreover, we obtain universal characterizations of the categories of $\mathbb Z$-valued $G$-Mackey profunctors and of quasi-finitely genuine $G$-spectra as studied by Kaledin and Krause-McCandless-Nikolaus, respectively.

We prove that commutative semirings in a cartesian closed presentable $\infty$-category, as defined by Groth, Gepner, and Nikolaus, are equivalent to product-preserving functors from the $(2,1)$-category of bispans of finite sets. In other words, we identify the latter as the Lawvere theory for commutative semirings in the $\infty$-categorical context. This implies that connective commutative ring spectra can be described as grouplike product-preserving functors from bispans of finite sets to spaces. A key part of the proof is a localization result for $\infty$-categories of spans, and more generally for $\infty$-categories with factorization systems, that may be of independent interest.

Fluidic iontronics is emerging as a distinctive platform for implementing neuromorphic circuits, characterized by its reliance on the same aqueous medium and ionic signal carriers as the brain. Drawing upon recent theoretical advancements in both iontronic spiking circuits and in dynamic transport of aqueous electrolytes through conical ion channels, which form fluidic memristors, we expand the repertoire of proposed neuronal spiking dynamics in iontronic circuits. Through a modelled circuit containing channels that carry a bipolar surface charge, we extract phasic bursting, mixed-mode spiking, tonic bursting, and threshold variability, all with spike voltages and frequencies within the typical range for mammalian neurons. These features are possible due to the strong dependence of the typical conductance memory retention time on the channel length, enabling timescales varying from individual spikes to bursts of multiple spikes within a single circuit. These advanced forms of neuronal-like spiking support the exploration of aqueous iontronics as an interesting platform for neuromorphic circuits.

The multicomponent coagulation equation is a generalisation of the Smoluchowski coagulation equation in which size of a particle is described by a vector. As with the original Smoluchowski equation, the multicomponent coagulation equation features gelation when supplied with a multiplicative kernel. Additionally, a new type of behaviour called localization is observed due to the multivariate nature of the particle size distribution. Here we extend and apply the branching process representation technique, which we introduced to study differential equations in our previous work, to find a concise probabilistic solution of the multicomponent coagulation equation supplied with monodisperse initial conditions and provide short proofs for the gelation time and localization.

We study a variant of the searching problem where the environment consists of a known terrain and the goal is to obtain visibility of an unknown target point on the surface of the terrain. The searcher starts on the surface of the terrain and is allowed to fly above the terrain. The goal is to devise a searching strategy that minimizes the competitive ratio, that is, the worst-case ratio between the distance traveled by the searching strategy and the minimum travel distance needed to detect the target. For $1.5$D terrains we show that any searching strategy has a competitive ratio of at least $\sqrt{82}$ and we present a nearly-optimal searching strategy that achieves a competitive ratio of $3\sqrt{19/2} \approx \sqrt{82} + 0.19$. This strategy extends directly to the case where the searcher has no knowledge of the terrain beforehand. For $2.5$D terrains we show that the optimal competitive ratio depends on the maximum slope $\lambda$ of the terrain, and is hence unbounded in general. Specifically, we provide a lower bound on the competitive ratio of $\Omega(\sqrt{\lambda})$. Finally, we complement the lower bound with a searching strategy based on the maximum slope of the known terrain, which achieves a competitive ratio of $O(\sqrt{\lambda})$.

In recent years, the upstream of Large Language Models (LLM) has also encouraged the computer vision community to work on substantial multimodal datasets and train models on a scale in a self-/semi-supervised manner, resulting in Vision Foundation Models (VFM), as, e.g., Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP). The models generalize well and perform outstandingly on everyday objects or scenes, even on downstream tasks, tasks the model has not been trained on, while the application in specialized domains, as in an industrial context, is still an open research question. Here, fine-tuning the models or transfer learning on domain-specific data is unavoidable when objecting to adequate performance. In this work, we, on the one hand, introduce a pipeline to generate the Industrial Language-Image Dataset (ILID) based on web-crawled data; on the other hand, we demonstrate effective self-supervised transfer learning and discussing downstream tasks after training on the cheaply acquired ILID, which does not necessitate human labeling or intervention. With the proposed approach, we contribute by transferring approaches from state-of-the-art research around foundation models, transfer learning strategies, and applications to the industrial domain.

Probabilistic Cellular Automata are a generalization of Cellular Automata. Despite their simple definition, they exhibit fascinating and complex behaviours. The stationary behaviour of these models changes when model parameters are varied, making the study of their phase diagrams particularly interesting. The block approximation method, also known in this context as the local structure approach, is a powerful tool for studying the main features of these diagrams, improving upon Mean Field results. This work considers systems with multiple stationary states, aiming to understand how their interactions give rise to the structure of the phase diagram. Additionally, it shows how a simple algorithmic implementation of the block approximation allows for the effective study of the phase diagram even in the presence of several absorbing states.

Given a set of objects O in the plane, the corresponding intersection graph is defined as follows. A vertex is created for each object and an edge joins two vertices whenever the corresponding objects intersect. We study here the case of unit segments and polylines with exactly k bends. In the recognition problem, we are given a graph and want to decide whether the graph can be represented as the intersection graph of certain geometric objects. In previous work it was shown that various recognition problems are ∃R-complete, leaving unit segments and polylines as few remaining natural cases. We show that recognition for both families of objects is ∃R-complete.

In this paper we extend equivariant infinite loop space theory to take into account multiplicative norms: For every finite group $G$, we construct a multiplicative refinement of the comparison between the $\infty$-categories of connective genuine $G$-spectra and space-valued Mackey functors, first proven by Guillou-May, and use this to give a description of connective normed equivariant ring spectra as space-valued Tambara functors. In more detail, we first introduce and study a general notion of homotopy-coherent normed (semi)rings, and identify these with product-preserving functors out of a corresponding $\infty$-category of bispans. In the equivariant setting, this identifies space-valued Tambara functors with normed algebras with respect to a certain normed monoidal structure on grouplike $G$-commutative monoids in spaces. We then show that the latter is canonically equivalent to the normed monoidal structure on connective $G$-spectra given by the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms. Combining our comparison with results of Elmanto-Haugseng and Barwick-Glasman-Mathew-Nikolaus, we produce normed ring structures on equivariant algebraic K-theory spectra.

Mobility edges (ME), separating Anderson-localized states from extended states, are known to arise in the single-particle energy spectrum of certain one-dimensional lattices with aperiodic order. Dephasing and decoherence effects are widely acknowledged to spoil Anderson localization and to enhance transport, suggesting that ME and localization are unlikely to be observable in the presence of dephasing. Here it is shown that, contrary to such a wisdom, ME can be created by pure dephasing effects in quasicrystals in which all states are delocalized under coherent dynamics. Since the lifetimes of localized states induced by dephasing effects can be extremely long, rather counter-intuitively decoherence can enhance localization of excitation in the lattice. The results are illustrated by considering photonic quantum walks in synthetic mesh lattices.

When considering airborne epidemic spreading in social systems, a natural connection arises between mobility and epidemic contacts. As individuals travel, possibilities to encounter new people either at the final destination or during the transportation process appear. Such contacts can lead to new contagion events. In fact, mobility has been a crucial target for early non-pharmaceutical containment measures against the recent COVID-19 pandemic, with a degree of intensity ranging from public transportation line closures to regional, city or even home confinements. Nonetheless, quantitative knowledge on the relationship between mobility-contagions and, consequently, on the efficiency of containment measures remains elusive. Here we introduce an agent-based model with a simple interaction between mobility and contacts. Despite its simplicity our model shows the emergence of a critical mobility level, inducing major outbreaks when surpassed. We explore the interplay between mobility restrictions and the infection in recent intervention policies seen across many countries, and how interventions in the form of closures triggered by incidence rates can guide the epidemic into an oscillatory regime with recurrent waves. We consider how the different interventions impact societal well-being, the economy and the population. Finally, we propose a mitigation framework based on the critical nature of mobility in an epidemic, able to suppress incidence and oscillations at will, preventing extreme incidence peaks with potential to saturate health care resources.

Flamenco, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a profound expression of cultural identity rooted in Andalusia, Spain. However, there is a lack of quantitative studies that help identify characteristic patterns in this long-lived music tradition. In this work, we present a computational analysis of Flamenco lyrics, employing natural language processing and machine learning to categorize over 2000 lyrics into their respective Flamenco genres, termed as $\textit{palos}$. Using a Multinomial Naive Bayes classifier, we find that lexical variation across styles enables to accurately identify distinct $\textit{palos}$. More importantly, from an automatic method of word usage, we obtain the semantic fields that characterize each style. Further, applying a metric that quantifies the inter-genre distance we perform a network analysis that sheds light on the relationship between Flamenco styles. Remarkably, our results suggest historical connections and $\textit{palo}$ evolutions. Overall, our work illuminates the intricate relationships and cultural significance embedded within Flamenco lyrics, complementing previous qualitative discussions with quantitative analyses and sparking new discussions on the origin and development of traditional music genres.

Approximate numerical methods are one of the most used strategies to extract information from many-interacting-agents systems. In particular, numerical approximations are of extended use to deal with epidemic, ecological and biological models, since unbiased methods like the Gillespie algorithm can become unpractical due to high CPU time usage required. However, the use of approximations has been debated and there is no clear consensus about whether unbiased methods or biased approach is the best option. In this work, we derive scaling relations for the errors in approximations based on binomial extractions. This finding allows us to build rules to compute the optimal values of both the discretization time and number of realizations needed to compute averages with the biased method with a target precision and minimum CPU-time usage. Furthermore, we also present another rule to discern whether the unbiased method or biased approach is more efficient. Ultimately, we will show that the choice of the method should depend on the desired precision for the estimation of averages.

Identifying and controlling decoherence in single electron sources (SES) is important for their applications in quantum information processing. The recent experiments with ultrashort electron pulses [J. D. Fletcher et al., Nat. Commun. 10, 5298 (2019)] demonstrate strong decoherence that cannot be caused by traditional mechanisms such as electron-electron or electron-phonon interactions. Here we propose timing noise as a universal model, consistent with existing experimental data, to explain strong decoherence of ultrafast SES pulses, without resorting to any specific microscopic mechanism for such decoherence. We also propose a protocol to filter out timing noise which works even in the presence of other decoherence effects, such as those present in, e.g., low-energy SESs.

Next generation gravitational waves (GWs) observatories are expected to measure GW signals with unprecedented sensitivity, opening new, independent avenues to learn about our Universe. The distance-redshift relation is a fulcrum for cosmology and can be tested with GWs emitted by merging binaries of compact objects, called standard sirens, thanks to the fact that they provide the absolute distance from the source. On the other hand, fluctuations of the intervening matter density field induce modifications on the measurement of luminosity distance compared to that of a homogeneous universe. Assuming that the redshift information is obtained through the detection of an electromagnetic counterpart, we investigate the impact that lensing of GWs might have in the inference of cosmological parameters. We treat lensing as a systematic error and check for residual bias on the values of the cosmological parameters. We do so by means of mock catalogues of bright sirens events in different scenarios relevant to Einstein Telescope. For our fiducial scenario, the lensing bias can be comparable to or greater than the expected statistical uncertainty of the cosmological parameters, although non-negligible fluctuations in the bias values are observed for different realisations of the mock catalogue. We also discuss some mitigation strategies that can be adopted in the data analysis. Overall, our work highlights the need to model lensing effects when using standard sirens as probes of the distance-redshift relation.

We study the effective versions of several notions related to incompleteness, undecidability and inseparability along the lines of Pour-El's insights. Firstly, we strengthen Pour-El's theorem on the equivalence between effective essential incompleteness and effective inseparability. Secondly, we compare the notions obtained by restricting that of effective essential incompleteness to intensional finite extensions and extensional finite extensions. Finally, we study the combination of effectiveness and hereditariness, and prove an adapted version of Pour-El's result for this combination.

In the first part of this paper, we review old and new results about the influence of host population heterogeneity on (various characteristics of) epidemic outbreaks. In the second part we highlight a modelling issue that so far has received little attention: how do contact patterns, and hence transmission opportunities, depend on the size and the composition of the host population? Without any claim on completeness, we offer a range of potential (quasi-mechanistic) submodels. The overall aim of the paper is to describe the state-of-the-art and to catalyse new work.

Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T formulated in a finite language such that T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results (as in Theorems A+; B and B+).

The aim of this guidance note is to provide recommendations on best statistical practices and to ensure consistent communication of statistical analysis and associated uncertainty across TOAR publications. The scope includes approaches for reporting trends, a discussion of strengths and weaknesses of commonly used techniques, and calibrated language for the communication of uncertainty. The focus of this guidance note is placed on trend analysis, which is expected to be the main statistical topic of interest across many TOAR-II focus working groups, but some of the recommendations and principles provided below are also valid for other applications. Recommendations are highlighted and numbered from R1 to R9.

We formulate gauge theories on noncompact Lorentzian manifolds. For definiteness we choose an SO(1,4) gauge theory -- the isometry group of the five dimensional Minkowski space. We make use of the natural inner product to construct the Yang-Mills gauge action on four dimensional spacetime, on which the natural tetrad and metric are induced, thus breaking the symmetry to that of general relativity. In the low energy limit -- if a suitable gauge field condensate develops -- the theory reduces to the Cartan-Einstein gravity, which harbors nondynamical torsion, and is consistent with all observations. We also discuss how to couple our gauge theory of gravity to scalar and vector matter. The Hamiltonian analysis shows that the theory possesses no Ostrogradsky instabilities, however it harbors a kinetic instability. We conjecture that such a kinetic instability can be removed either by generalizing the theory to the nonlinear Born-Infeld theory, or by constraining the kinetic instability. This work is an attempt to formulate gravity as a unitary, renormalizable gauge theory without instabilities, in which the fundamental propagating degrees of freedom are in the spin-one tetrad connection.

We first survey the current state of the art concerning the dynamical properties of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms defined dynamically as piecewise fractional maps and compare them with algorithms based on lattice reduction. We discuss their convergence properties and the quality of the rational approximation, and stress the interest for these algorithms to be obtained by iterating dynamical systems. We then focus on an algorithm based on the classical Jacobi--Perron algorithm involving the nearest integer part. We describe its Markov properties and we suggest a possible procedure for proving the existence of a finite ergodic invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.

We show that a large class of first-order conservation PDEs can be probabilistically represented using multi-type branching processes. The representation holds when the initial conditions are linear combinations of negative exponentials. This class contains Burgers' equation in 1D, which may develop a gradient blow-up in finite time, as well as other equations with more general nonlinearities. We also show how the time of gradient blow up can be identified by studying criticality conditions of the corresponding branching processes.

We consider the classical attractor regime of the spectator Abelian Higgs model in power-law inflation, and compute the one-loop corrections to its evolution. For computations we utilize dimensional regularization and the propagators in the unitary gauge. The corrections to both the scalar condensate and the energy-momentum tensor exhibit secular ultraviolet contributions, that tend to slow down the rolling of the scalar down its potential, and drive it away from the classical attractor. These corrections need not be suppressed if the U(1) charge is much larger than the scalar self-coupling, which is seen already in flat space. In addition, at late times the secular corrections necessarily invalidate the perturbative loop expansion. We find the late time secular corrections to be captured by the renormalization group, which opens up the possibility to resum them past the breakdown of perturbativity.

We provide a new sequent calculus that enjoys syntactic cut-elimination and strongly terminating backward proof search for the intuitionistic Strong Löb logic iSL, an intuitionistic modal logic with a provability interpretation. A novel measure on sequents is used to prove both the termination of the naive backward proof search strategy, and the admissibility of cut in a syntactic and direct way, leading to a straightforward cut-elimination procedure. All proofs have been formalised in the interactive theorem prover Coq.

We compute non-perturbative contributions to the Adler function, the derivative of the vacuum polarization function in gauge theory, using resurgence methods and Borel-summed gauge field propagators. At 2-loop, to order $1/N_f$, we construct the full 2-parameter transseries and perform the sum over the non-perturbative sectors. We then introduce a convolution-based method to derive the transseries structure of product series, which can also be used to study higher orders in the expansion in $1/N_f$. We compute 3-loop planar diagrams, at order $1/N_f^2$, and for each diagram study the asymptotic behavior and resulting non-perturbative information in the transseries. A structure emerges that, from a resurgence point of view, is quite different from toy models hitherto studied. We study in particular the first and second non-perturbative sectors, their relation to UV and IR renormalons, and how their presence influences the perturbative expansions in neighbouring sectors. Finally, finding that many non-perturbative sectors have asymptotic series, we derive relations among all of them, thus providing an interesting new perspective on the alien lattice for the Adler function.

We introduce a novel and effective method to compute transport coefficients in strongly interacting plasma states in holographic QFTs. Our method is based on relating the IR limit of fluctuations on a gravitational background to its variations providing a previously overlooked connection between boundary and near horizon data. We use this method to derive analytic formulas for the viscosities of an ansiotropic plasma state in the presence of an external magnetic field or another isotropy breaking external source. We then apply our findings to holographic QCD.

We take a step toward a "microscopic" derivation of gauge-string duality. In particular, using mathematical techniques of Strebel differentials and discrete exterior calculus, we obtain a bosonic string worldsheet action for a string embedded in d+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS space from multi-loop Feynman graphs of a quantum field theory of scalar matrices in d-dimensions in the limit of diverging loop number. Our work is building on the program started by 't Hooft in 1974, this time including the holographic dimension which we show to emerge from the continuum of Schwinger parameters of Feynman diagrams.

We perform an analysis of the one- and two-loop massive quark form factor in QED in a region expansion, up to next-to-leading power in the quark mass. This yields an extensive set of regional integrals, categorized into three topologies, against which factorization theorems at next-to-leading power could be tested. Our analysis reveals a number of subtle aspects involving rapidity regulators, as well as additional regions that manifest themselves only beyond one loop, at the level of single diagrams, but which cancel in the form factor.

One of the hallmark properties of fluids is their shear viscosity which is, among other things, responsible for parabolic flow profiles through narrow channels. In recent years, there has been a growing number of observations of said flow profiles in electronic transport measurements in a variety of material systems, most notably in graphene. In this paper, we investigate the shear viscosity of interacting graphene from a theoretical point of view. We study both a phenomenological as well as a microscopic model and find excellent agreement between the two. Our main finding is collective modes make a sizeable contribution to the viscosity that can equal or even outweigh the electronic contribution that is usually assumed dominant. We comment on how this finding carries over to systems beyond graphene and related Dirac materials.

Soft and collinear radiation in collider processes can be described in a universal way, that is independent of the underlying process. Recent years have seen a number of approaches for probing whether radiation beyond the leading soft approximation can also be systematically classified. In this paper, we study a formula that captures the leading next-to-soft QCD radiation affecting processes with both final- and initial-state partons, by shifting the momenta in the non-radiative squared amplitude. We first examine W+jet production, and show that a previously derived formula of this type indeed holds in the case in which massive colour singlet particles are present in the final state. Next, we develop a physical understanding of the momentum shifts, showing precisely how they disrupt the well-known angular ordering property of leading soft radiation.

In the area of query complexity of Boolean functions, the most widely studied cost measure of an algorithm is the worst-case number of queries made by it on an input. Motivated by the most natural cost measure studied in online algorithms, the competitive ratio, we consider a different cost measure for query algorithms for Boolean functions that captures the ratio of the cost of the algorithm and the cost of an optimal algorithm that knows the input in advance. The cost of an algorithm is its largest cost over all inputs. Grossman, Komargodski and Naor [ITCS'20] introduced this measure for Boolean functions, and dubbed it instance complexity. Grossman et al. showed, among other results, that monotone Boolean functions with instance complexity 1 are precisely those that depend on one or two variables. We complement the above-mentioned result of Grossman et al. by completely characterizing the instance complexity of symmetric Boolean functions. As a corollary we conclude that the only symmetric Boolean functions with instance complexity 1 are the Parity function and its complement. We also study the instance complexity of some graph properties like Connectivity and k-clique containment. In all the Boolean functions we study above, and those studied by Grossman et al., the instance complexity turns out to be the ratio of query complexity to minimum certificate complexity. It is a natural question to ask if this is the correct bound for all Boolean functions. We show a negative answer in a very strong sense, by analyzing the instance complexity of the Greater-Than and Odd-Max-Bit functions. We show that the above-mentioned ratio is linear in the input size for both of these functions, while we exhibit algorithms for which the instance complexity is a constant.

Joint interpretation of bulk and shear wave speeds constrains the chemistry of the deep mantle. At all depths, the diversity of wave speeds cannot be explained by an isochemical mantle. Between 1000 and 2500 km depth, hypothetical mantle models containing an electronic spin crossover in (Mg,Fe)O provide a significantly better fit to the wave-speed distributions, as well as more realistic temperatures and silica contents, than models without a spin crossover. Below 2500 km, wave speed distributions are explained by enrichment in silica towards the core-mantle-boundary. This silica enrichment may represent the fractionated remains of an ancient basal magma ocean.

We test the regime of validity of the effective field theory (EFT) of intrinsic alignments (IA) at the one-loop level by comparing with 3D halo shape statistics in N-body simulations. This model is based on the effective field theory of large-scale structure (EFT of LSS) and thus a theoretically well-motivated extension of the familiar non-linear alignment (NLA) model and the tidal-alignment-tidal-torquing (TATT) model. It contains a total of $8$ free bias parameters. Specifically, we measure the dark matter halo shape-shape multipoles $P_{EE}^{(0)}(k), P_{EE}^{(2)}(k), P_{BB}^{(0)}(k), P_{BB}^{(2)}(k)$ as well as the matter-shape multipoles $P_{\delta E}^{(0)}(k), P_{\delta E}^{(2)}(k)$ from the simulations and perform a joint fit to determine the largest wavenumber $k_{\text{max}}$ up to which the theory predictions from the EFT of IA are consistent with the measurements. We find that the EFT of IA is able to describe intrinsic alignments of dark matter halos up to $k_\text{max}=0.30\,h/\text{Mpc}$ at $z=0$. This demonstrates a clear improvement over other existing alignment models like NLA and TATT, which are only accurate up to $k_\text{max}=0.05\,h/\text{Mpc}$ . We examine the posterior distributions of the higher-order bias parameters, and show that their inclusion is necessary to describe intrinsic alignments in the quasi-linear regime. Further, the EFT of IA is able to accurately describe the auto-spectrum of intrinsic alignment B-modes, in contrast to the other alignment models considered.

In this paper we rigorously construct a finite volume representation for the height-one field of the Abelian sandpile model and the degree field of the uniform spanning tree in terms of the fermionic Gaussian free field. This representation can be seen as the lattice representation of a free symplectic fermion field. It allows us to compute cumulants of those fields, both in finite volume and in the scaling limit, including determining the explicit normalizing constants for fields in the corresponding logarithmic field theory. Furthermore, our results point towards universality of the height-one and degree fields, as we prove that the scaling limits of the cumulants agree (up to constants) in the square and triangular lattice. We also recover the equivalent scaling limits for the hypercubic lattice in higher dimensions, and discuss how to adapt the proofs of our results to general graphs.

We study Whittaker vectors (and Jacquet integrals) in the generalized principal series for a real reductive group. A functional equation for them is obtained. This allows to establish uniform estimates for their holomorphic extensions with respect to the continuous induction parameter. Finally, we link the Whittaker vectors to Harish-Chandra's Whittaker integrals for which we then prove uniform tempered estimates. This allows us to establish rapid decay for a class of Fourier transforms on the space of Whittaker Schwartz functions.

The protection of sensitive data becomes more vital, as data increases in value and potency. Furthermore, the pressure increases from regulators and society on model developers to make their Artificial Intelligence (AI) models non-discriminatory. To boot, there is a need for interpretable, transparent AI models for high-stakes tasks. In general, measuring the fairness of any AI model requires the sensitive attributes of the individuals in the dataset, thus raising privacy concerns. In this work, the trade-offs between fairness, privacy and interpretability are further explored. We specifically examine the Statistical Parity (SP) of Decision Trees (DTs) with Differential Privacy (DP), that are each popular methods in their respective subfield. We propose a novel method, dubbed Privacy-Aware Fairness Estimation of Rules (PAFER), that can estimate SP in a DP-aware manner for DTs. DP, making use of a third-party legal entity that securely holds this sensitive data, guarantees privacy by adding noise to the sensitive data. We experimentally compare several DP mechanisms. We show that using the Laplacian mechanism, the method is able to estimate SP with low error while guaranteeing the privacy of the individuals in the dataset with high certainty. We further show experimentally and theoretically that the method performs better for DTs that humans generally find easier to interpret.

Given a set of $n$ points in the Euclidean plane, the $k$-MinSumRadius problem asks to cover this point set using $k$ disks with the objective of minimizing the sum of the radii of the disks. After a long line of research on related problems, it was finally discovered that this problem admits a polynomial time algorithm [GKKPV~'12]; however, the running time of this algorithm is $O(n^{881})$, and its relevance is thereby mostly of theoretical nature. A practically and structurally interesting special case of the $k$-MinSumRadius problem is that of small $k$. For the $2$-MinSumRadius problem, a near-quadratic time algorithm with expected running time $O(n^2 \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ was given over 30 years ago [Eppstein~'92]. We present the first improvement of this result, namely, a near-linear time algorithm to compute the $2$-MinSumRadius that runs in expected $O(n \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ time. We generalize this result to any constant dimension $d$, for which we give an $O(n^{2-1/(\lceil d/2\rceil + 1) + \varepsilon})$ time algorithm. Additionally, we give a near-quadratic time algorithm for $3$-MinSumRadius in the plane that runs in expected $O(n^2 \log^2 n \log^2 \log n)$ time. All of these algorithms rely on insights that uncover a surprisingly simple structure of optimal solutions: we can specify a linear number of lines out of which one separates one of the clusters from the remaining clusters in an optimal solution.
