Its design combines the knowledge and expertise gathered by the European solar physics community during the construction and operation of state-of-the-art solar telescopes operating in visible and near-infrared wavelengths: the Swedish 1m Solar Telescope, the German Vacuum Tower Telescope and GREGOR, the French Télescope Héliographique pour l’Étude du Magnétisme et des Instabilités Solaires, and the Dutch Open Telescope. With its 4.2 m primary mirror and an open configuration, EST will become the most powerful European ground-based facility to study the Sun in the coming decades in the visible and near-infrared bands. EST uses the most innovative technological advances: the first adaptive secondary mirror ever used in a solar telescope, a complex multi-conjugate adaptive optics with deformable mirrors that form part of the optical design in a natural way, a polarimetrically compensated telescope design that eliminates the complex temporal variation and wavelength dependence of the telescope Mueller matrix, and an instrument suite containing several (etalon-based) tunable imaging spectropolarimeters and several integral field unit spectropolarimeters. This publication summarises some fundamental science questions that can be addressed with the telescope, together with a complete description of its major subsystems. © C. Q. Stellar activity is inherently time variable, therefore simultaneous measurements are necessary to study the correlation between different activity indicators. In this study we compare X-ray fluxes measured within the first all-sky survey conducted by the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) instrument on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory to Ca II H & K, excess flux measurements R+, using observations made with the robotic TIGRE telescope. We created the largest sample of simultaneous X-ray and spectroscopic Ca II H & K observations of late-type stars obtained so far, and in addition, previous measurements of Ca II H & K for all sample stars were obtained. We find the expected correlation between our log(L_X/L_bol) to log(R+) measurements, but when the whole stellar ensemble is considered, the correlation between coronal and chromospheric activity indicators does not improve when the simultaneously measured data are used. A more detailed analysis shows that the correlation of log(L_X/L_bol) to log(R+) measurements of the pseudo-simultaneous data still has a high probability of being better than that of a random set of non-simultaneous measurements with a long time baseline between the observations. Cyclic variations on longer timescales are therefore far more important for the activity flux-flux relations than short-term variations in the form of rotational modulation or flares, regarding the addition of "noise" to the activity flux-flux correlations. Finally, regarding the question of predictability of necessarily space-based log(L_X/L_bol) measurements by using ground-based chromospheric indices, we present a relation for estimating log(L_X/L_bol) from R+ values and show that the expected error in the calculated minus observed (C-O) log(L_X/L_bol) values is 0.35 dex., 12 pages, 8 figures, to appear on A&A, Special Issue: The Early Data Release of eROSITA and Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC on the SRG Mission

We scrutinize the red dwarf component in the eclipsing binary system V471 Tau in order to unravel relations between different activity layers from the stellar surface through the chromosphere up to the corona. We aim at studying how the magnetic dynamo in the late-type component is affected by the close white dwarf companion. We use space photometry, high resolution spectroscopy and X-ray observations from different space instruments to explore the main characteristics of magnetic activity. From K2 photomery we find that 5-10 per cent of the apparent surface of the red dwarf is covered by cool starspots. From seasonal photometric period changes we estimate a weak differential rotation. From the flare activity we derive a cumulative flare frequency diagram which suggests that frequent flaring could have a significant role in heating the corona. Using high resolution spectroscopy we reconstruct four Doppler images for different epochs which reveal an active longitude, that is, a permanent dominant spot facing the white dwarf. From short term changes in the consecutive Doppler images we derive a weak solar-type surface differential rotation with 0.0026 shear coefficient, similar to that provided by photometry. The long-term evolution of X-ray luminosity reveals a possible activity cycle length of 12.7 ys, traces of which were discovered also in the H$\alpha$ spectra. We conclude that the magnetic activity of the red dwarf component in V471 Tau is strongly influenced by the close white dwarf companion. We confirm the presence of a permanent dominant spot (active longitude) on the red dwarf facing the white dwarf. The weak differential rotation of the red dwarf is very likely the result of tidal confinement by the companion. We find that the periodic appearance of the inter-binary H$\alpha$ emission from the vicinity of the inner Lagrangian point is correlated with the activity cycle., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

The mid-infrared (mid-IR) range has been mostly unexplored for the investigation of solar flares. It is only recently that new mid-IR flare observations have begun opening a new window into the response and evolution of the solar chromosphere. These new observations have been mostly performed by the AR30T and BR30T telescopes that are operating in Argentina and Brazil, respectively. We present the analysis of SOL2019-05-15T19:24, a GOES class C2.0 solar flare observed at 30~THz (10$\ \mu$m) by the ground-based telescope AR30T. Our aim is to characterize the evolution of the flaring atmosphere and the energy transport mechanism in the context of mid-IR emission. We performed a multi-wavelength analysis of the event by complementing the mid-IR data with diverse ground- and space-based data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the H--$\alpha$ Solar Telescope for Argentina (HASTA), and the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA). Our study includes the analysis of the magnetic field evolution of the flaring region and of the development of the flare. The mid-IR images from AR30T show two bright and compact flare sources that are spatially associated with the flare kernels observed in ultraviolet (UV) by SDO. We confirm that the temporal association between mid-IR and UV fluxes previously reported for strong flares is also observed for this small flare. The EOVSA microwave data revealed flare spectra consistent with thermal free-free emission, which lead us to dismiss the existence of a significant number of non-thermal electrons. We thus consider thermal conduction as the primary mechanism responsible for energy transport. Our estimates for the thermal conduction energy and total radiated energy fall within the same order of magnitude, reinforcing our conclusions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has been obtaining near- and far-ultraviolet images and spectra of the solar atmosphere since July 2013. The unique combination of near and far-ultraviolet spectra and images at subarcsecond resolution and high cadence allows the tracing of mass and energy through the critical interface between the solar surface and the corona or solar wind. IRIS has enabled research into the fundamental physical processes thought to play a role in the low solar atmosphere such as ion-neutral interactions, magnetic reconnection, the generation, propagation, and dissipation of various types of waves, the acceleration of non-thermal particles, and various small-scale instabilities. These new findings have helped provide novel insights into a wide range of phenomena including the discovery of non-thermal particles in coronal nanoflares, the formation and impact of spicules and other jets, resonant absorption and dissipation of Alfvenic waves, energy release associated with braiding of magnetic field lines, the thermal instability in the chromosphere-corona mass and energy cycle, the contribution of waves, turbulence, and non-thermal particles in the energy deposition during flares and smaller-scale events such as UV bursts, and the role of flux ropes and other mechanisms in triggering CMEs. IRIS observations have also advanced studies of the connections between solar and stellar physics. Advances in numerical modeling, inversion codes, and machine learning techniques have played a key role in driving these new insights. With the advent of exciting new instrumentation both on the ground (e.g., DKIST, ALMA) and space-based (e.g., Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter), we aim to review new insights based on IRIS observations or related modeling, and highlight some of the outstanding challenges that have been brought to the fore., Comment: 105 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physics

The Enthalpy Based Thermal Evolution of Loops (EBTEL) approximate model for static and dynamic coronal loops is developed to include the effect of a loop cross-sectional area which increases from the base of the transition region (TR) to the corona. The TR is defined as the part of a loop between the top of the chromosphere and the location where thermal conduction changes from an energy loss to an energy gain. There are significant differences from constant area loops due to the manner in which the reduced volume of the TR responds to conductive and enthalpy fluxes from the corona. For static loops with modest area variation the standard picture of loop energy balance is retained, with the corona and TR being primarily a balance between heating and conductive losses in the corona, and downward conduction and radiation to space in the TR. As the area at the loop apex increases, the TR becomes thicker and the density in TR and corona larger. For large apex areas, the coronal energy balance changes to one primarily between heating and radiation, with conduction playing an increasingly unimportant role, and the TR thickness becoming a significant fraction of the loop length. Approximate scaling laws are derived that give agreement with full numerical solutions for the density, but not the temperature. For non-uniform areas, dynamic loops have a higher peak temperature and are denser in the radiative cooling phase by of order 50% than the constant area case for the examples considered. They also show a final rapid cooling and draining once the temperature approaches 1 MK. Although the magnitude of the emission measure will be enhanced in the radiative phase, there is little change in the important observational diagnostic of its temperature dependence., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, published in MNRAS

Despite thousands of spectroscopic detections, only four isolated white dwarfs exhibit Balmer emission lines. The temperature inversion mechanism is a puzzle over 30 years old that has defied conventional explanations. One hypothesis is a unipolar inductor that achieves surface heating via ohmic dissipation of a current loop between a conducting planet and a magnetic white dwarf. To investigate this model, new time-resolved spectroscopy, spectropolarimetry, and photometry of the prototype GD 356 are studied. The emission features vary in strength on the rotational period, but in anti-phase with the light curve, consistent with a cool surface spot beneath an optically thin chromosphere. Possible changes in the line profiles are observed at the same photometric phase, potentially suggesting modest evolution of the emission region, while the magnetic field varies by 10 per cent over a full rotation. These comprehensive data reveal neither changes to the photometric period, nor additional signals such as might be expected from an orbiting body. A closer examination of the unipolar inductor model finds points of potential failure: the observed rapid stellar rotation will inhibit current carriers due to the centrifugal force, there may be no supply of magnetospheric ions, and no anti-phase flux changes are expected from ohmic surface heating. Together with the highly similar properties of the four cool, emission-line white dwarfs, these facts indicate that the chromospheric emission is intrinsic. We report on the properties of coronal loop foot-point heating with observations at the highest resolution, from the CRisp Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (CRISP) located at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) and co-aligned NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) observations, of Type II spicules in the chromosphere and their signatures in the EUV corona. Here, we address one important issue, as to why there is not always a one-to-one correspondence, between Type II spicules and hot coronal plasma signatures, i.e. beyond TR temperatures. We do not detect any difference in their spectral properties in a quiet Sun region compared to a region dominated by coronal loops. On the other hand, the number density close to the foot-points in the active region is found to be an order of magnitude higher than in the quiet Sun case. A differential emission measure analysis reveals a peak at $\sim 5 \times 10^5$ K on the order of 10$^{22}$~cm$^{-5}$~K$^{-1}$. Using this result as a constraint, we conduct numerical simulations and show that with an energy input of $1.25 \times 10^{24}$ erg (corresponding to $\sim$10 RBEs contributing to the burst) we manage to reproduce the observation very closely. However, simulation runs with lower thermal energy input do not reproduce the synthetic AIA $171 {\AA}$ signatures, indicating that there is a critical number of spicules required in order to account for the AIA $171{\AA}$ signatures in the simulation. Furthermore, the higher energy ($1.25 \times 10^{24}$ ergs) simulations reproduce catastrophic cooling with a cycle duration of $\sim$5 hours, matching a periodicity we observe in the EUV observations.

The forward fitting of solar flare observations with radiation-hydrodynamic simulations is a common technique for learning about energy deposition and atmospheric evolution during these explosive events. A frequent spectral line choice for this process is Ca II 854.2 nm due to its formation in the chromosphere and substantial variability. It is important to ensure that this line is accurately modeled to obtain the correct interpretation of observations. Here we investigate the importance of photoionisation of Ca II to Ca III by the hydrogen Lyman transitions; whilst the Lyman continuum is typically considered in this context in simulations, the associated bound-bound transitions are not. This investigation uses two RADYN flare simulations and reprocesses the radiative transfer using the Lightweaver framework which accounts for the overlapping of all active transitions. The Ca II 854.2 nm line profiles are found to vary significantly due to photoionisation by the Lyman lines, showing notably different shapes and even reversed asymmetries. Finally, we investigate to what extent these effects modify the energy balance of the simulation and the implications on future radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. There is found to be a 10-15% change in detailed optically thick radiative losses from considering these photoionisation effects on the calcium lines in the two simulations presented, demonstrating the importance of considering these effects in a self-consistent way., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context: Resistive Ohmic dissipation has been suggested as a mechanism for heating the solar chromosphere, but few studies have established this association. Aim: We aim to determine how Ohmic dissipation by electric currents can heat the solar chromosphere. Methods: We combine high-resolution spectroscopic Ca II data from the Dunn Solar Telescope and vector magnetic field observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) to investigate thermal enhancements in a sunspot light bridge. The photospheric magnetic field from HMI was extrapolated to the corona using a non-force-free field technique that provided the three-dimensional distribution of electric currents, while an inversion of the chromospheric Ca II line with a local thermodynamic equilibrium and a nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium spectral archive delivered the temperature stratifications from the photosphere to the chromosphere. Results: We find that the light bridge is a site of strong electric currents, of about 0.3 A/m^2 at the bottom boundary, which extend to about 0.7 Mm while decreasing monotonically with height. These currents produce a chromospheric temperature excess of about 600-800 K relative to the umbra. Only the light bridge, where relatively weak and highly inclined magnetic fields emerge over a duration of 13 hr, shows a spatial coincidence of thermal enhancements and electric currents. The temperature enhancements and the Cowling heating are primarily confined to a height range of 0.4-0.7 Mm above the light bridge. The corresponding increase in internal energy of 200 J/m^3 can be supplied by the heating in about 10 min. The solar photosphere, chromosphere and corona are known to rotate differentially as a function of latitude. To date, it is unclear if the solar transition region also rotates differentially. In this paper, we investigate differential rotational profile of solar transition region as a function of latitude, using solar full disk (SFD) images at 30.4 nm wavelength recorded by Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) onboard Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) space mission for the period from 2008 to 2018 (Solar Cycle 24). Our investigations show that solar transition region rotates differentially. The sidereal rotation rate obtained at +/- 5 degree equatorial band is quite high (~ 14.7 degree/day), which drops to ~ 13.6 degree/day towards both polar regions. We also obtain that the rotational differentiality is low during the period of high solar activity (rotation rate varies from 14.86 to 14.27 degree/day) while it increases during the ascending and the descending phases of the 24th solar cycle (rotation rate varies from 14.56 to 13.56 degree/day in 2008 and 14.6 to 13.1 degree/day in 2018). Average sidereal rotation rate (over SFD) follows the trend of solar activity (maximum ~ 14.97 degree/day during the peak phase of the solar activity, which slowly decreases to minimum ~ 13.9 degree/day during ascending and the descending phases of the 24th solar cycle). Sixty years ago the first observation was published showing solar energetic particles (SEPs) with a sampling of chemical elements. Thus began study of the direct products of dynamic physics in the solar corona. As we have progressed from 4-min sounding-rocket samples to continuous satellite coverage of SEP events, we have extended the observations to the unusual distribution of element abundances throughout the periodic table. Small "impulsive" SEP events from islands of magnetic reconnection on open magnetic-field lines in solar jets generate huge enhancements in abundances of 3He and of the heaviest elements. Solar flares involve the same physics but there the SEPs are trapped on closed loops, expending their energy as heat and light. The larger, energetic "gradual" SEP events are accelerated at shock waves driven by fast, wide coronal mass ejections (CMEs). However, these shocks can also reaccelerate ions from pools of residual suprathermal impulsive ions, and CMEs from jets can also drive fast shocks, complicating the picture. The underlying element abundances in SEP events represent the solar corona, which differs from corresponding abundances in the photosphere as a function of the first ionization potential (FIP) of the elements, distinguishing low-FIP (, 30 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication by Space Science Reviews

Routine ultraviolet imaging of the Sun's upper atmosphere shows the spectacular manifestation of solar activity; yet we remain blind to its main driver, the magnetic field. Here we report unprecedented spectropolarimetric observations of an active region plage and its surrounding enhanced network, showing circular polarization in ultraviolet (Mg II $h$ & $k$ and Mn I) and visible (Fe I) lines. We infer the longitudinal magnetic field from the photosphere to the very upper chromosphere. At the top of the plage chromosphere the field strengths reach more than 300 gauss, strongly correlated with the Mg II $k$ line core intensity and the electron pressure. This unique mapping shows how the magnetic field couples the different atmospheric layers and reveals the magnetic origin of the heating in the plage chromosphere., 50 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, published in Science Advances

To predict line emission in the solar atmosphere requires models which are fundamentally different depending on whether the emission is from the chromosphere or the corona. At some point between the two regions, there must be a change between the two modelling regimes. Recent extensions to the coronal modelling for carbon and oxygen lines in the solar transition region have shown improvements in the emission of singly- and doubly-charged ions, along with Li-like ions. However, discrepancies still remain, particularly for singly-charged ions and intercombination lines. The aim of this work is to explore additional atomic processes that could further alter the charge state distribution and the level populations within ions, in order to resolve some of the discrepancies. To this end, excitation and ionisation caused by both the radiation field and by atom-ion collisions have been included, along with recombination through charge transfer. The modelling is carried out using conditions which would be present in the quiet Sun, which allows an assessment of the part atomic processes play in changing coronal modelling, separately from dynamic and transient events taking place in the plasma. The effect the processes have on the fractional ion populations are presented, as well as the change in level populations brought about by the new excitation mechanisms. Contribution functions of selected lines from low charge states are also shown, to demonstrate the extent to which line emission in the lower atmosphere could be affected by the new modelling., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS, 12 pages, 9 figures

In order to investigate the relation between magnetic structures and the signatures of heating in plage regions, we observed a plage region with the He I 1083.0 nm and Si I 1082.7 nm lines on 2018 October 3 using the integral field unit mode of the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS) installed at the GREGOR telescope. During the GRIS observation, the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) obtained spectra of the ultraviolet Mg II doublet emitted from the same region. In the periphery of the plage region, within the limited field of view seen by GRIS, we find that the Mg II radiative flux increases with the magnetic field in the chromosphere with a factor of proportionality of 2.38 \times 10^4 erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} G^{-1}. The positive correlation implies that magnetic flux tubes can be heated by Alfv'en wave turbulence or by collisions between ions and neutral atoms relating to Alfv'en waves. Within the plage region itself, the radiative flux was large between patches of strong magnetic field strength in the photosphere, or at the edges of magnetic patches. On the other hand, we do not find any significant spatial correlation between the enhanced radiative flux and the chromospheric magnetic field strength or the electric current. In addition to the Alfv'en wave turbulence or collisions between ions and neutral atoms relating to Alfv'en waves, other heating mechanisms related to magnetic field perturbations produced by interactions of magnetic flux tubes could be at work in the plage chromosphere., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The ultraviolet (UV) emission from the most numerous stars in the universe, M dwarfs, impacts the formation, chemistry, atmospheric stability, and surface habitability of their planets. We have analyzed the spectral evolution of UV emission from M0-M2.5 (0.3-0.6 Msun) stars as a function of age, rotation, and Rossby number, using Hubble Space Telescope observations of Tucana Horologium (40 Myr), Hyades (650 Myr), and field (2-9 Gyr) objects. The quiescent surface flux of their C II, C III, C IV, He II, N V, Si III, and Si IV emission lines, formed in the stellar transition region, remains elevated at a constant level for 240 $\pm$ 30 Myr before declining by 2.1 orders of magnitude to an age of 10 Gyr. Mg II and far-UV pseudocontinuum emission, formed in the stellar chromosphere, exhibit more gradual evolution with age, declining by 1.3 and 1.7 orders of magnitude, respectively. The youngest stars exhibit a scatter of 0.1 dex in far-UV line and pseudocontinuum flux attributable only to rotational modulation, long-term activity cycles, or an unknown source of variability. Saturation-decay fits to these data can predict an M0-M2.5 star's quiescent emission in UV lines and the far-UV pseudocontinuum with an accuracy of roughly 0.2-0.3 dex, the most accurate means presently available. The physics of the solar chromosphere is complex from both theoretical and modeling perspectives. The plasma temperature from the photosphere to corona increases from ~5,000 K to ~1 million K over a distance of only ~10,000 km from the chromosphere and the transition region. Certain regions of the solar atmosphere have sufficiently low temperature and ionization rates to be considered as weakly-ionized. In particular, this is true at the lower chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of our data-driven magnetohydrodynamics model for the weakly-ionized chromosphere and show a benchmark result. It utilizes the Cowling resistivity which is orders of magnitude greater than the Coulomb resistivity. Ohm's law therefore includes anisotropic dissipation. We investigate the effects of the Cowling resistivity on heating and magnetic reconnection in the chromosphere as the flare-producing active region (AR) 11166 evolves. Context. Understanding the 3D magnetic field as well as the plasma in the chromosphere and transition region is important. One way is to extrapolate the magnetic field and plasma from the routinely measured vector magnetogram on the photosphere based on the assumption of the magnetohydrostatic (MHS) state. However, photospheric data may be inconsistent with the MHS assumption. Therefore, we must study the restriction on the photospheric magnetic field, which is required by the MHS system. Moreover, the data should be transformed accordingly before MHS extrapolations can be applied. Aims. We aim to obtain a set of surface integrals as criteria for the MHS system and use this set of integrals to preprocess a vector magnetogram. Methods. By applying Gauss' theorem and assuming an isolated active region on the Sun, we related the magnetic energy and forces in the volume to the surface integral on the photosphere. The same method was applied to obtain restrictions on the photospheric magnetic field as necessary criteria for a MHS system. We used an optimization method to preprocess the data to minimize the deviation from the criteria as well as the measured value. Results. By applying the virial theorem to the active region, we find the boundary integral that is used to compute the energy of a force-free field usually underestimates the magnetic energy of a large active region. We also find that the MHS assumption only requires the x-, y-component of net Lorentz force and the z-component of net torque to be zero. These zero components are part of Aly's criteria for a force-free field. However, other components of net force and torque can be non-zero values. It is not yet fully understood how magnetohydrodynamic waves in the interior and atmosphere of the Sun are excited. Traditionally, turbulent convection in the interior is considered to be the source of wave excitation in the quiet Sun. Over the last few decades, acoustic events observed in the intergranular lanes in the photosphere have emerged as a strong candidate for a wave excitation source. Here we report our observations of wave excitation by a new type of event: rapidly changing granules. Our observations were carried out with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph in the H$\alpha$ and Ca II 8542 $\unicode{xC5}$ lines and the TiO 7057 $\unicode{xC5}$ broadband filter imager of the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. We identify granules in the internetwork region that undergo rapid dynamic changes such as collapse (event 1), fragmentation (event 2), or submergence (event 3). In the photospheric images, these granules become significantly darker than neighboring granules. Following the granules' rapid changes, transient oscillations are detected in the photospheric and chromospheric layers. In the case of event 1, the dominant period of the oscillations is close to 4.2 min in the photosphere and 3.8 min in the chromosphere. Moreover, in the Ca II$-$0.5 $\unicode{xC5}$ raster image, we observe repetitive brightenings in the location of the rapidly changing granules that are considered the manifestation of shock waves. Based on our results, we suggest that dynamic changes of granules can generate upward-propagating acoustic waves in the quiet Sun that ultimately develop into shocks., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Elemental abundances in the solar corona are known to be different from those observed in the solar photosphere. The ratio of coronal to photospheric abundance shows a dependence on the first ionisation potential (FIP) of the element. We estimate FIP bias from direct measurements of elemental abundances from soft X-ray spectra using data from multiple space missions covering a range of solar activity levels. This comprehensive analysis shows clear evidence for a decrease in FIP bias around maximum intensity of the X-ray flare with coronal abundances briefly tending to photospheric values and a slow recovery as the flare decays. The departure from coronal abundances are larger for the low FIP elements Ca, Fe and Si than for S which have a mid FIP value. These changes in the degree of fractionation might provide inputs to model wave propagation through the chromosphere during flares., Comment: accepted for publication in Solar Physics

Aims. We aim to study the magnetic field in solar spicules using high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations in the Ca II 8542 Å line obtained with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. Methods. The equations that result from the application of the weak field approximation (WFA) to the radiative transfer equations were used to infer the line-of-sight (LOS) component of the magnetic field (BLOS). Two restrictive conditions were imposed on the Stokes I and V profiles at each pixel before they could be used in a Bayesian inversion to compute its BLOS. Results. The LOS magnetic field component was inferred in six data sets totalling 448 spectral scans in the Ca II 8542 Å line and containing both active region and quiet Sun areas, with values of hundreds of Gauss being abundantly inferred. There seems to be no difference, from a statistical point of view, between the magnetic field strength of spicules in the quiet Sun or near an active region. On the other hand, the BLOS distributions present smaller values on the disc than off-limb, a fact that can be explained by the effect of superposition on the chromosphere of on-disc structures. We show that on-disc pixels in which the BLOS is determined are possibly associated with spicular structures because these pixels are co-spatial with the magnetic field concentrations at the network boundaries and the sign of their BLOS agrees with that of the underlying photosphere. We find that spicules in the vicinity of a sunspot have a magnetic field polarity (i.e. north or south) equal to that of the sunspot. This paper also contains an analysis of the effect of off-limb overlapping structures on the observed Stokes I and V parameters and the BLOS obtained from the WFA. It is found that this value is equal to or smaller than the largest LOS magnetic field components of the two structures. In addition, using random BLOS, Doppler velocities, and line intensities of these two structures leads in ≃50% of the cases to Stokes I and V parameters that are unsuitable to be used with the WFA. Conclusions. Our results present a scarcity of LOS magnetic field components smaller than some 50 G, which must not be taken as evidence against the existence of these magnetic field strengths in spicules. This fact possibly arises as the consequence of signal superposition and noise in the data. We also suggest that the failure of previous works to infer the strong magnetic fields in spicules detected here is their coarser spatial and/or temporal resolution.

The evolution of the photospheric magnetic field plays a key role in the energy transport into the chromosphere and the corona. In active regions, newly emerging magnetic flux interacts with the pre-existent magnetic field, which can lead to reconnection events that convert magnetic energy to thermal energy. We aim to study the heating caused by a strong reconnection event that was triggered by magnetic flux cancellation. We use imaging-spectropolarimetric data in the Fe I 6301A, Fe I 6302A, Ca II 8542A and Ca II K obtained with the CRISP and CHROMIS instruments at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. This data was inverted using multi-atom, multi-line non-LTE inversions using the STiC code. The inversion yielded a three-dimensional model of the reconnection event and surrounding atmosphere, including temperature, velocity, microturbulence, magnetic file configuration, and the radiative loss rate. The model atmosphere shows the emergence of magnetic loops with a size of several arcsecs into a pre-existing predominantly unipolar field. Where the reconnection region is expected to be, we see an increase in the chromospheric temperature of roughly 2000 K as well as bidirectional flows of the order of 10 km s$^{-1}$ emanating from the region. We see bright blobs of roughly 0.2 arcsec diameter in the Ca II K moving at a plane-of-the-sky velocity of order 100 km s$^{-1}$ and a blueshift of 100 km s$^{-1}$, which we interpret as plasmoids ejected from the same region. This evidence is consistent with theoretical models of reconnection and we thus conclude that reconnection is taking place. The chromospheric radiative losses at the reconnection site in our inferred model are as high as 160 kW m$^{-2}$, providing a quantitative constraint on theoretical models that aim to simulate reconnection caused by flux emergence in the chromosphere., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use a combination of full-disk data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and high-resolution data from the Dunn Solar Telescope (DST) to study the formation, structure, and evolution of an atypical light bridge (LB) in a regular sunspot. The LB results from the emergence of magnetic flux with one footpoint rooted in a pore outside the parent sunspot that appears about 17 hrs before the LB. The pore has a polarity opposite to that of the sunspot and recedes away from it at a speed of about 0.4 km/s. This is accompanied by the development of an elongated magnetic channel in the outer penumbra which triggers the formation of the LB when it reaches the inner penumbral boundary. The LB is a nearly horizontal structure with a field strength of about 1.2 kG that exhibits long-lived photospheric blue-shifts of about 0.85 km/s along its entire length.The emergence of the LB leads to dynamic surges in the chromosphere and transition region about 13 min later. We derived the photospheric and chromospheric structure of the LB in the DST data from spectral line parameters and inversions of He i at 1083 nm, Si i at 1082.7 nm, Ca ii IR at 854 nm and Halpha at 656 nm, and speckle-reconstructed imaging at 700 nm and 430 nm. The LB shows an elongated filamentary shape in the photosphere without lateral extrusions. The thermal inversion of Ca ii IR reveals the LB to be about 600-800 K hotter than the umbra. Different sections of the LB are elevated to heights between 400 and 700 km. Our results indicate that the LB formation is part of a flux emergence event with the LB envelope reaching a height of about 29 Mm before dissolving after about 13 hr. We suggest that the existence of persistent, large-scale photospheric blue-shifts in LBs is the most likely criterion to distinguish between flux emergence events and overturning convection in field-free umbral intrusions., Comment: Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 24 pages, 20 figures, 1 table

Context. High resolution magnetic field measurements are routinely done only in the solar photosphere. Higher layers like the chromosphere and corona can be modeled by extrapolating the photospheric magnetic field upward. In the solar corona, plasma forces can be neglected and the Lorentz force vanishes. This is not the case in the upper photosphere and chromosphere where magnetic and non-magnetic forces are equally important. One way to deal with this problem is to compute the plasma and magnetic field self-consistently with a magnetohydrostatic (MHS) model. Aims. We aim to derive the magnetic field, plasma pressure and density of AR11768 by applying the newly developed extrapolation technique to the SUNRISE/IMaX data. Methods. An optimization method is used for the MHS modeling. The initial conditions consist of a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) and a gravity-stratified atmosphere. Results. In the non-force-free layer, which is spatially resolved by the new code, Lorentz forces are effectively balanced by the gas pressure gradient force and the gravity force. The pressure and density are depleted in strong field regions, which is consistent with observations. Denser plasma, however, is also observed at some parts of the active region edges. In the chromosphere, the fibril-like plasma structures trace the magnetic field nicely. Bright points in SUNRISE/SuFI 3000 {$\AA$} images are often accompanied by the plasma pressure and electric current concentrations. In addition, the average of angle between MHS field lines and the selected chromospheric fibrils is $11.8^\circ$, which is smaller than those computed from the NLFFF model ($15.7^\circ$) and linear MHS model ($20.9^\circ$). Solar flares are 3D phenomenon but modelling a flare in 3D, including many of the important processes in the chromosphere, is a computational challenge. Accurately modelling the chromosphere is important, even if the transition region and corona are the areas of interest, due to the flow of energy, mass, and radiation through the interconnected layers. We present a solar flare arcade model, that aims to bridge the gap between 1D and 3D modelling. Our approach is limited to the synthesis of optically thin emission. Using observed active region loop structures in a 3D domain we graft simulated 1D flare atmospheres onto each loop, synthesise the emission and then project that emission onto to the 2D observational plane. Emission from SDO/AIA, GOES/XRS, and IRIS/SG Fe XXI 1354.1A was forward modelled. We analyse the temperatures, durations, mass flows, and line widths associated with the flare, finding qualitative agreement but certain quantitative differences. Compared to observations, the Doppler shifts are of similar magnitude but decay too quickly. They are not as ordered, containing a larger amount of scatter compared to observations. The duration of gradual phase emission from GOES and AIA emission is also too short. Fe XXI lines are broadened, but not sufficiently. These findings suggest that additional physics is required in our model. The arcade model that we show here as a proof-of-concept can be extended to investigate other lines and global aspects of solar flares, providing a means to better test the coronal response to models of flare energy injection., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, 22 pages, 18 figures

In the past few years, the ALMA radio telescope has become available for solar observations. ALMA diagnostics of the solar atmosphere are of high interest because of the theoretically expected linear relationship between the brightness temperature at mm wavelengths and the local gas temperature in the solar atmosphere. Key for the interpretation of solar ALMA observations is understanding where in the solar atmosphere the ALMA emission originates. Recent theoretical studies have suggested that ALMA bands at 1.2 (band 6) and 3 mm (band 3) form in the middle and upper chromosphere at significantly different heights. We study the formation of ALMA diagnostics using a 2.5D radiative MHD model that includes the effects of ion-neutral interactions (ambipolar diffusion) and non-equilibrium ionization of hydrogen and helium. Our results suggest that in active regions and network regions, observations at both wavelengths most often originate from similar heights in the upper chromosphere, contrary to previous results. Non-equilibrium ionization increases the opacity in the chromosphere so that ALMA mostly observe spicules and fibrils along the canopy fields. We combine these modeling results with observations from IRIS, SDO and ALMA to suggest a new interpretation for the recently reported "dark chromospheric holes", regions of very low temperatures in the chromosphere., Comment: 5 figures under review in ApJL

The inverse Evershed flow (IEF) is an inflow of material into the penumbra of sunspots in the solar chromosphere that occurs along dark, elongated superpenumbral fibrils extending from about the outer edge of the moat cell to the sunspot. The IEF channels exhibit brightenings in the penumbra, where the supersonic IEF descends to the photosphere causing shock fronts with localized heating. We used an 1-hr time-series of spectroscopic observations of the chromospheric spectral lines of CaIIIR at 854nm and H$\alpha$ at 656nm taken with IBIS at the DST to investigate the temporal evolution of IEF channels. Complementary information on the photospheric magnetic field was obtained from observations with FIRS at 1083\nm and HMI. We find that individual IEF channels are long-lived (10-60min) and only show minor changes in position and flow speed during their life time. Initiation and termination of IEF channels takes several minutes. The IEF channels with line-of-sight velocities of about 10km/s show no lasting impact from transient or oscillatory phenomena with maximal velocity amplitudes of only about 1km/s that run along them. We could not detect any clear correlation of the location and evolution of IEF channels to local magnetic field properties in the photosphere in the penumbra or moving magnetic features in the sunspot moat. Our results support a picture of the IEF as a field-aligned siphon flow along arched loops. We perform magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the propagation of Alfven wave in magnetic chromosphere. We use the 1.5-dimensional expanding flux tube geometry setting and transverse perturbation at the bottom to generate the Alfven wave. Compared with previous studies, our expansion is that we include the radiative loss term introduced by Carlsson & Leenaarts (2012). We find that when an observation based transverse wave generator is applied, the spatial distribution of the time-averaged radiative loss profile in our simulation is consistent with that in the classic atmospheric model. In addition, the energy flux in the corona is larger than the required value for coronal heating in the quiet region. Our study shows that the Alfven wave driven model has the potential to explain chromospheric heating and transport enough energy to the corona simultaneously., Accepted by ApJ

Coronal rain corresponds to cool and dense clumps in the corona accreting towards the solar surface, and is often observed above solar active regions. They are generally thought to be produced by thermal instability in the corona and their lifetime is limited by the time they take to reach the chromosphere. Although the rain usually fragments into smaller clumps while falling down, their specific spatial and temporal scales remain unclear. In addition, the observational signatures of the impact of the rain with the chromosphere have not been clarified yet. In this study, we investigate the time evolution of velocity and intensity of coronal rain above a sunspot by analyzing coronal images obtained by the AIA onboard the SDO satellite as well as the Slit-Jaw Images (SJIs) and spectral data taken by the IRIS satellite. We identify dark and bright threads moving towards the umbra in AIA images and in SJIs, respectively, and co-spatial chromospheric intensity enhancements and redshifts in three IRIS spectra, Mg II k 2796 Angstrom, Si IV 1394 Angstrom, and C II 1336 Angstrom. The intensity enhancements and coronal rain redshifts occur almost concurrently in all the three lines, which clearly demonstrates the causal relationship with coronal rain. Furthermore, we detect bursty intensity variation with a timescale shorter than 1 minute in Mg II k, Si IV and C II spectra, indicating that a length scale of rain clumps is about 2.7 Mm if we multiply the typical time scale of the busty intensity variation at 30 sec by the rain velocity at 90 $\mathrm{km\ s}^{-1}$. Such rapid enhancements in the IRIS lines are excited within a time lag of 5.6 sec limited by the temporal resolution. We measure the effects of non-isotropic thermal conduction on generation of solar chromospheric jets through numerical simulations carried out with the use of one fluid MHD code MAGNUS. Following the work of Srivastava et al. (2018), we consider the atmospheric state with a realistic temperature model and generate the ejection of plasma through a gas pressure driver operating in the top chromosphere. We consider the magnetic field mimicking a flux tube and perform parametric studies by varying the magnetic field strength and the amplitude of the driver. We find that in the case of thermal conduction the triggered jets exhibit a considerably larger energy and mass fluxes and their shapes are more collimated and penetrate more the solar corona than for the ideal MHD equations. Low magnetic fields allow these jets to be more energetic, and larger magnetic fields decrease the enhancement of mass and energy due to the inclusion of the thermal conductivity., Comment: 6 Pages, 19 figures. Alfv\'en waves are responsible for the transfer of magnetic energy in the magnetized plasma. They are involved in heating solar atmosphere and driving solar wind through various nonlinear processes. Since the magnetic field configurations directly affect the nonlinearity of Alfv\'en waves, it is important to investigate how they relate to the solar atmosphere and wind structure through the nonlinear propagation of Alfv\'en waves. In this study, we carried out the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to realize the above relation. The results show that when the nonlinearity of Alfv\'en waves in the chromosphere exceeds a critical value, the dynamics of the solar chromosphere (e.g., spicule) and the mass loss rate of solar wind tend to be independent of the energy input from the photosphere. In a situation where the Alfv\'en waves are highly nonlinear, the strong shear torsional flow generated in the chromosphere ``fractures'' the magnetic flux tube. This corresponds to the formation of chromospheric intermediate shocks, which limit the transmission of the Poynting flux into the corona by Alfv\'en waves and also inhibits the propagation of chromospheric slow shock., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, accepted for the publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Jet phenomena with a bright loop in their footpoint, called anemone jets, have been observed in the solar corona and chromosphere. These jets are formed as a consequence of magnetic reconnection, and from the scale universality of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), it can be expected that anemone jets exist even in the solar photosphere. However, it is not necessarily apparent that jets can be generated as a result of magnetic reconnection in the photosphere, where the magnetic energy is not dominant. Furthermore, MHD waves generated from the photospheric jets could contribute to chromospheric heating and spicule formation; however, this hypothesis has not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we perform 3D MHD simulation including gravity with the solar photospheric parameter to investigate anemone jets in the solar photosphere. In the simulation, jet-like structures were induced by magnetic reconnection in the solar photosphere. We determined that these jet-like structures were caused by slow shocks formed by the reconnection and were propagated approximately in the direction of the background magnetic field. The plasma dynamics at frequencies comparable with collisional frequency between various species has to be described in multifluid framework, where collisional interaction between particles is an important ingredient. In our study, we will assume that charged particles are strongly coupled, meaning that they form a single fluid that interacts with neutrals, therefore we will employ a two-fluid model. Here, we aim to investigate the evolutionary equation of slow sausage waves propagating in a gravitationally stratified flux tube in the two-fluid solar atmosphere in a strongly ionized limit using an initial value analysis. Due to the collisional interaction between massive particles (ions and neutrals), the governing equations are coupled. Solutions are sought in the strongly ionized limit and the density ratio between neutrals and charged particles is a small parameter. This limit is relevant to the upper part of the chromosphere. Our results show that slow sausage waves associated with charged particles propagate such that their possible frequency is affected by a cut-off due to the gravitational stratification. In contrast, for neutral acoustic waves the cut-off value applies on their wavelength and only small wavelength waves are able to propagate. Slow modes associated with neutrals are driven by the collisional coupling with ions.

We study the evolution of a mini-filament eruption in a quiet region at the center of the solar disk and its impact on the ambient atmosphere. We used high-spectral resolution imaging spectroscopy in H$\alpha$ acquired by the echelle spectrograph of the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT), Tenerife, Spain, photospheric magnetic field observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), and UV/EUV imaging from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The H$\alpha$ line profiles were noise-stripped using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and then inverted to produce physical and cloud model parameter maps. The minifilament formed between small-scale, opposite-polarity magnetic features through a series of small reconnection events and it erupted within an hour after its appearance in H$\alpha$. Its development and eruption exhibited similarities with large-scale erupting filaments, indicating the action of common mechanisms. Its eruption took place in two phases, namely a slow rise and a fast expansion, and it produced a coronal dimming, before the minifilament disappeared. During its eruption we detected a complicated velocity pattern, indicative of a twisted, thread-like structure. Part of its material returned to the chromosphere producing observable effects on nearby low-lying magnetic structures. Cloud model analysis showed that the minifilament was initially similar to other chromospheric fine structures, in terms of optical depth, source function and Doppler width, but it resembled a large-scale filament on its course to eruption. The instrumental advances made in this new era of 4-meter class solar telescopes with unmatched spectropolarimetric accuracy and sensitivity, will enable the study of chromospheric magnetic fields and their dynamics with unprecedented detail. In this regard, spectropolarimetric diagnostics can provide invaluable insight into magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) wave processes. MHD waves and, in particular, Alfv\'enic fluctuations associated to particular wave modes, were recently recognized as important mechanisms not only for the heating of the outer layers of the Sun's atmosphere and the acceleration of the solar wind, but also for the elemental abundance anomaly observed in the corona of the Sun and other Sun-like stars (also known as first ionisation potential; FIP) effect. Here, we take advantage of state-of-the-art and unique spectropolarimetric IBIS observations to investigate the relation between intensity and circular polarisation (CP) fluctuations in a sunspot chromosphere. Our results show a clear link between the intensity and CP fluctuations in a patch which corresponds to a narrow range of magnetic field inclinations. We present results from spectroscopic observations of AT 2018hyz, a transient discovered by the ASAS-SN survey at an absolute magnitude of $M_V\sim -20.2$ mag, in the nucleus of a quiescent galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines. AT 2018hyz shows a blue spectral continuum and broad emission lines, consistent with previous TDE candidates. High cadence follow-up spectra show broad Balmer lines and He I in early spectra, with He II making an appearance after $\sim70-100$ days. The Balmer lines evolve from a smooth broad profile, through a boxy, asymmetric double-peaked phase consistent with accretion disc emission, and back to smooth at late times. The Balmer lines are unlike typical AGN in that they show a flat Balmer decrement (H$\alpha$/H$\beta\sim1.5$), suggesting the lines are collisionally excited rather than being produced via photo-ionisation. The flat Balmer decrement together with the complex profiles suggest that the emission lines originate in a disc chromosphere, analogous to those seen in cataclysmic variables. The low optical depth of material due to a possible partial disruption may be what allows us to observe these double-peaked, collisionally excited lines. Recent studies of the abundances of H and He relative to those of heavier ions in solar energetic particle (SEP) events suggest new features in the underlying physics. Impulsive SEP events, defined by uniquely large enhancements of Fe/O, emerge from magnetic reconnection in solar jets. In small, "pure," shock-free, impulsive SEP events, protons with mass-to-charge ratio A/Q = 1 fit the power-law dependence of element abundance enhancements versus A/Q extrapolated from the heavier elements 2 < Z < 57. Sometimes these events have order-of-magnitude suppressions of He, even though H fits with heavier elements, perhaps because of the slower ionization of He during a rapid rise of plasma from the chromosphere. In larger impulsive SEP events, He fits, but there are large proton excesses relative to the power-law fit of Z > 2 ions, probably because associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) drive shock waves fast enough to reaccelerate the impulsive SEPs but also to sample protons from the ambient solar plasma. In contrast, gradual SEP events are accelerated by wide, fast CME-driven shock waves, but those with smaller, weaker shocks, perhaps quasi-perpendicular, favor impulsive suprathermal residue left by many previous jets, again supplemented with excess protons from ambient coronal plasma. In the larger, more common gradual SEP events, faster, stronger shock waves sample the ambient coronal plasma more deeply, overwhelming any impulsive-ion component, so that proton abundances again fit the same power-law distribution as all other elements. During a solar flare, it is believed that reconnection takes place in the corona followed by fast energy transport to the chromosphere. The resulting intense heating strongly disturbs the chromospheric structure, and induces complex radiation hydrodynamic effects. Interpreting the physics of the flaring solar atmosphere is one of the most challenging tasks in solar physics. Here we present a novel deep learning approach, an invertible neural network, to understanding the chromospheric physics of a flaring solar atmosphere via the inversion of observed solar line profiles in H{\alpha} and Ca II {\lambda}8542. Our network is trained using flare simulations from the 1D radiation hydrodynamics code RADYN as the expected atmosphere and line profile. This model is then applied to single pixels from an observation of an M1.1 solar flare taken with SST/CRISP instrument just after the flare onset. The inverted atmospheres obtained from observations provide physical information on the electron number density, temperature and bulk velocity flow of the plasma throughout the solar atmosphere ranging from 0-10 Mm in height. The density and temperature profiles appear consistent with the expected atmospheric response, and the bulk plasma velocity provides the gradients needed to produce the broad spectral lines whilst also predicting the expected chromospheric evaporation from flare heating. We conclude that we have taught our novel algorithm the physics of a solar flare according to RADYN and that this can be confidently used for the analysis of flare data taken in these two wavelengths. The high temporal, spatial and spectral resolution of Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) has provided new insights into the understanding of different small-scale processes occurring at the chromospheric and transition region (TR) heights. We study the dynamics of high-frequency oscillations of active region (AR 2376) moss as recorded by simultaneous imaging and spectral data of IRIS. Wavelet transformation, power maps generated from slit-jaw images in the Si IV 1400\AA passband, and sit-and-stare spectroscopic observations of the Si IV 1403\AA spectral line reveal the presence of high-frequency oscillations with $\sim$1-2 minute periods in the bright moss regions. The presence of such low periodicities is further confirmed by intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) as obtained by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique. Small exoplanets of nearby M dwarf stars present the possibility to find and characterize habitable worlds within the next decade. TRAPPIST-1, an ultracool M dwarf star, was recently found to have seven Earth-sized planets of predominantly rocky composition. The planets e, f, and g can have a liquid water ocean on their surface given appropriate atmospheres of N2 and CO2. Particularly, climate models have shown that the planets e and f can sustain a global liquid water ocean, for >=0.2 bar CO2 plus 1 bar N2, or >=2 bars CO2, respectively. These atmospheres are irradiated by ultraviolet emission from the star's moderately active chromosphere, and the consequence of this irradiation is unknown. Here we show that chemical reactions driven by the irradiation can produce and maintain more than 0.2 bar O2 and 0.05 bar CO if the CO2 is >=0.1 bar. The abundance of O2 and CO can rise to more than 1 bar under certain boundary conditions. Because of this O2-CO runaway, habitable environments on the TRAPPIST-1 planets entail an O2- and CO-rich atmosphere with coexisting O3. The only process that would prevent the runaway is direct recombination of O2 and CO in the ocean, a reaction that is facilitated biologically. Our results indicate that O2, O3, and CO should be considered together with CO2 as the primary molecules in the search for atmospheric signatures from temperate and rocky planets of TRAPPIST-1 and other M dwarf stars., ApJ accepted

In the highly dynamic chromosphere, there exist many kinds of small-scale activities, such as spicules, surges, and Ellerman bombs. Here, we report the discovery of a new phenomenon in the chromosphere observed with the New Vacuum Solar Telescope at the Fuxian Solar Observatory. In the high tempo-spatial resolution H$\alpha$ images, some dark or bright structures are found to fly along the curved trajectory, looking like cannonballs. Their average size, mass, and velocity are about 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ km$^{3}$, 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{8}$ kg, and 56 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. In the simultaneous (extreme-)ultraviolet images obtained by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, these cannonballs appear as brighter features compared to the surrounding area, implying that there exists some kind of heating during this process. The photospheric magnetograms show the magnetic flux emergence and interaction with the pre-existing fields. These observations reveal that the cannonballs are chromospheric material blobs launched due to the magnetic reconnection between emerging magnetic flux and the pre-existing loops., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

In this work, we present a new methodology to fit the observed and synthetic spectrum of solar-like stars at millimeter, submillimeter and infrared wavelengths through semiempirical models of the solar chromosphere. We use the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm as a Non-Linear method, PakalMPI as the semiempirical model of the solar chromosphere, and recent observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of Alpha Centauri A as a test case. Our results show that we can use solar chromospheric semiempirical models as an input model to reproduce the observed spectrum of solar-like stars. The new profiles show similarities to the solar chromosphere as a minimum of temperature (without the restriction from CO emission) and a plateau in the high chromosphere. The umbral oscillations of velocity are commonly observed in the chromosphere of a sunspot. Their sources are considered to be either the external p-mode driving or the internal excitation by magnetoconvection. Even though the possibility of the p-mode driving has been often considered, the internal excitation has been rarely investigated. We report the identification of the oscillation patterns that may be closely related to the events of internal excitation from the observations of velocity oscillations in the temperature minimum region of two sunspots. The velocities were determined from the spectral data of the Fe I 5435 A line, a magnetically insensitive line, taken with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph of the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. As a result, we identified 4 oscillation patterns of 2.0 * 10^3 km coherent size that were clearly identified for about 7.9 minutes with oscillation amplitude of 9.3 * 10^-2 km/s. The power of the oscillations in these centers was concentrated in the 3 minute band. All the oscillation centers were located above the umbral dots undergoing noticeable morphological and dynamical changes that may be regarded as an observable signature of small-scale magnetoconvection inside the umbrae. Umbral flashes are periodic brightness increases routinely observed in the core of chromospheric lines within sunspot umbrae and are attributed to propagating shock fronts. In this work we quantify the shock heating energy of these umbral flashes using observations in the near infrared He I triplet obtained on 2014 December 7 with the SpectroPolarimetric Imager for the Energetic Sun (SPIES), which is a novel integral field unit spectrograph at the Dunn Solar Telescope. We determine the shock properties (the Mach number and the propagation speed) by fitting the measured He I spectral profiles with a theoretical radiative transfer model consisting of two constant property atmospheric slabs whose temperatures and macroscopic velocities are constrained by the Rankine-Hugoniot relations. From the Mach number, the shock heating energy per unit mass of plasma is derived to be 2 x 10^{10} erg g^{-1}, which is insufficient to maintain the umbral chromosphere. In addition, we find that the shocks propagate upward with the sound speed and the Mach number does not depend on the temperature upstream of the shocks. We report on spectropolarimetric observations across the Mg II h and k-lines at 2800 angstrom made by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter onboard the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Our analysis confirms the strong linear polarization in the wings of both lines observed near the limb, as previously reported, but also demonstrates the presence of a negatively (i.e., radially oriented) polarized signal between the two lines. We find evidence for fluctuations of the polarization pattern over a broad spectral range, resulting in some depolarization with respect to the pure scattering case when observed at very low spatial and temporal resolutions. This is consistent with recent theoretical modeling that predicts this to be the result of redistribution effects, quantum interference between the atomic levels of the upper term, and magneto-optical effects. A first attempt at a quantitative exploitation of these signals for the diagnosis of magnetic fields in the chromosphere is attempted. In active regions, we present observations of circular polarization dominated by the Zeeman effect. We are able to constrain the magnetic field strength in the upper active chromosphere using an analysis based on the magnetograph formula, as justified by theoretical modeling. We inferred a significantly strong magnetic field (~500 G) at the 2.5 sigma level on an exceptionally active, flaring region., Comment: (12 pages, 5 figures)

The emergence of magnetic flux into the solar atmosphere produces, among other phenomena, Ellerman bombs (EBs), which are observed in H alpha and are due to magnetic reconnection in the photosphere below the chromospheric canopy. Signs of reconnection are also observed in other spectral lines, typical of the chromosphere or the transition region. An example are the UV bursts observed in the transition region lines of Si IV and the upper chromospheric lines of Mg II. In this work we analyze high cadence, high resolution coordinated observations between the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spacecraft. H alpha images from the SST provide us with the positions, timings and trajectories of EBs in an emerging flux region. Simultaneous, co-aligned IRIS slit-jaw images at 133 (C II, transition region), 140 (Si IV, transition region) and 279.6 (Mg II k, core, upper chromosphere) nm, as well as spectroscopy in the far and near ultraviolet from the fast spectrograph raster, allow us to study the possible chromospheric/transition region counterparts of those EBs. Our main goal is to study the possible temporal and spatial relationship between several reconnection events at different layers in the atmosphere (namely EBs and UV bursts), the timing history between them, and the connection of these dynamical phenomena to the ejection of surges in the chromosphere. We also investigate the properties of an extended UV burst and their variations across the burst domain. Our results suggest a scenario where simultaneous and co-spatial EBs and UV bursts are part of the same reconnection system occurring sequentially along a vertical or nearly vertical current sheet. Heating and bidirectional jets trace the location where reconnection takes place. Spectroscopically determined Li abundances of metal-poor turn-off dwarfs are known to be nearly constant (Spite plateau), but lower than the primordial value expected from the standard cosmological model. However, abundance determination by using conventional model atmospheres may not necessarily be correct since the existence of high-temperature chromosphere even in very old stars has been confirmed. The aim of this study is to examine how the extra UV flux possibly irradiated from the chromosphere could affect the formation of the Li I 6708 line, and whether or not its influence might lead to a solution of the Li abundance discrepancy. A simple model chromosphere of a uniform thin gray slab emitting only thermal radiation is assumed, characterized by optical thickness and temperature. By taking into account this incident radiation in the surface boundary condition, non-LTE calculations for Li are carried out to see how the equivalent widths and the abundances are affected by these parameters. If the parameters are appropriately chosen, the strength of the Li I 6708 line can be reduced by a factor of ~2-3 due to overionization caused by enhanced UV radiation, leading to a lowering of the abundance by ~0.3-0.5 dex, which is consistent with the discrepancy in question. Moreover, the observed slight metallicity-dependent trend of the plateau can also be reproduced. Thus, superficial underestimation of Li abundances due to considerable overionization caused by chromospheric radiation may be regarded as a ponderable interpretation for the cosmological Li problem. The touchstone to verify this model would be to check the existence of significantly enhanced UV radiation in these Spite plateau stars, which should be detected if this scenario is valid, although very few such UV spectrophotometric observations have been done to date., Comment: 7 pages including 6 figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Recent observations support the propagation of a number of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes which, under some conditions, can become unstable and the developing instability is the Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI). In its nonlinear stage the KHI can trigger the occurrence of wave turbulence which is considered as a candidate mechanism for coronal heating. We review the modeling of tornado-like phenomena in the solar chromosphere and corona as moving weakly twisted and spinning cylindrical flux tubes, showing that the KHI rises at the excitation of high-mode MHD waves. The instability occurs within a wavenumber range whose width depends on the MHD mode number \emph{m}, the plasma density contrast between the rotating jet and its environment, and also on the twists of the internal magnetic field and the jet velocity. We have studied KHI in two twisted spinning solar polar coronal hole jets, in a twisted rotating jet emerging from a filament eruption, and in a rotating macrospicule. The theoretically calculated KHI development times of a few minutes for wavelengths comparable to the half-widths of the jets are in good agreement with the observationally determined growth times only for high order (10 $\mathrm{\leqslant}$ \emph{m} $\mathrm{\leqslant}$ 65) MHD modes. Using high-resolution numerical simulations we investigate the plasma heating driven by periodic two-fluid acoustic waves that originate at the bottom of the photosphere and propagate into the gravitationally stratified and partially ionized solar atmosphere. We consider ions+electrons and neutrals as separate fluids that interact between themselves via collision forces. The latter play an important role in the chromosphere, leading to significant damping of short-period waves. Long-period waves do not essentially alter the photospheric temperatures, but they exhibit the capability of depositing a part of their energy in the chromosphere. This results in up about a five times increase of ion temperature that takes place there on a time-scale of a few minutes. The most effective heating corresponds to waveperiods within the range of about 30-200 s with a peak value located at 80 s. However, we conclude that for the amplitude of the driver chosen to be equal to 0.1 km s$^{-1}$, this heating is too low to balance the radiative losses in the chromosphere.

We observed rapid variability ($\lesssim 60$ s) at the footpoints of transient hot ($\sim 8-10$ MK) coronal loops in active region cores, with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The high spatial ($\sim 0.33$ arcsec) and temporal ($\lesssim 5$-10 s) resolution is often crucial for the detection of this variability. We show how, in combination with 1D RADYN loop modeling, these IRIS spectral observations of the transition region (TR) and chromosphere provide powerful diagnostics of the properties of coronal heating and energy transport (thermal conduction and/or non-thermal electrons (NTE)). Our simulations of nanoflare heated loops indicate that emission in the Mg II triplet can be used as a sensitive diagnostic for non-thermal particles. In our events we observe a large variety of IRIS spectral properties (intensity, Doppler shifts, broadening, chromospheric/TR line ratios, Mg II triplet emission) even for different footpoints of the same coronal events. In several events, we find spectroscopic evidence for NTE (e.g., TR blue-shifts and Mg II triplet emission) suggesting that particle acceleration can occur even for very small magnetic reconnection events which are generally below the detection threshold of hard X-ray instruments that provide direct detection of emission of non-thermal particles., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
