Human emotions involve basic and compound facial expressions. However, current research on facial expression recognition (FER) mainly focuses on basic expressions, and thus fails to address the diversity of human emotions in practical scenarios. Meanwhile, existing work on compound FER relies heavily on abundant labeled compound expression training data, which are often laboriously collected under the professional instruction of psychology. In this paper, we study compound FER in the cross-domain few-shot learning setting, where only a few images of novel classes from the target domain are required as a reference. In particular, we aim to identify unseen compound expressions with the model trained on easily accessible basic expression datasets. To alleviate the problem of limited base classes in our FER task, we propose a novel Emotion Guided Similarity Network (EGS-Net), consisting of an emotion branch and a similarity branch, based on a two-stage learning framework. Specifically, in the first stage, the similarity branch is jointly trained with the emotion branch in a multi-task fashion. With the regularization of the emotion branch, we prevent the similarity branch from overfitting to sampled base classes that are highly overlapped across different episodes. In the second stage, the emotion branch and the similarity branch play a "two-student game" to alternately learn from each other, thereby further improving the inference ability of the similarity branch on unseen compound expressions. Recent years have seen remarkable progress in deep learning powered visual content creation. This includes 3D-aware generative image synthesis, which produces high-fidelity images in a 3D-consistent manner while simultaneously capturing compact surfaces of objects from pure image collections without the need for any 3D supervision, thus bridging the gap between 2D imagery and 3D reality. The 3D-aware generative models have shown that the introduction of 3D information can lead to more controllable image generation. The task of 3D-aware image synthesis has taken the field of computer vision by storm, with hundreds of papers accepted to top-tier journals and conferences in recent year (mainly the past two years), but there lacks a comprehensive survey of this remarkable and swift progress. Our survey aims to introduce new researchers to this topic, provide a useful reference for related works, and stimulate future research directions through our discussion section. Few-shot semantic segmentation aims to segment novel-class objects in a query image with only a few annotated examples in support images. Most of advanced solutions exploit a metric learning framework that performs segmentation through matching each pixel to a learned foreground prototype. However, this framework suffers from biased classification due to incomplete construction of sample pairs with the foreground prototype only. To address this issue, in this paper, we introduce a complementary self-contrastive task into few-shot semantic segmentation. Our new model is able to associate the pixels in a region with the prototype of this region, no matter they are in the foreground or background. To this end, we generate self-contrastive background prototypes directly from the query image, with which we enable the construction of complete sample pairs and thus a complementary and auxiliary segmentation task to achieve the training of a better segmentation model. Extensive experiments on PASCAL-5$^i$ and COCO-20$^i$ demonstrate clearly the superiority of our proposal. This paper proposes a dual-supervised uncertainty inference (DS-UI) framework for improving Bayesian estimation-based uncertainty inference (UI) in deep neural network (DNN)-based image recognition. In the DS-UI, we combine the classifier of a DNN, i.e., the last fully-connected (FC) layer, with a mixture of Gaussian mixture models (MoGMM) to obtain an MoGMM-FC layer. Unlike existing UI methods for DNNs, which only calculate the means or modes of the DNN outputs' distributions, the proposed MoGMM-FC layer acts as a probabilistic interpreter for the features that are inputs of the classifier to directly calculate the probability density of them for the DS-UI. In addition, we propose a dual-supervised stochastic gradient-based variational Bayes (DS-SGVB) algorithm for the MoGMM-FC layer optimization. Unlike conventional SGVB and optimization algorithms in other UI methods, the DS-SGVB not only models the samples in the specific class for each Gaussian mixture model (GMM) in the MoGMM, but also considers the negative samples from other classes for the GMM to reduce the intra-class distances and enlarge the inter-class margins simultaneously for enhancing the learning ability of the MoGMM-FC layer in the DS-UI. Experimental results show the DS-UI outperforms the state-of-the-art UI methods in misclassification detection. We further evaluate the DS-UI in open-set out-of-domain/-distribution detection and find statistically significant improvements. Visualizations of the feature spaces demonstrate the superiority of the DS-UI.

Depthwise convolution has gradually become an indispensable operation for modern efficient neural networks and larger kernel sizes ($\ge5$) have been applied to it recently. In this paper, we propose a novel extremely separated convolutional block (XSepConv), which fuses spatially separable convolutions into depthwise convolution to further reduce both the computational cost and parameter size of large kernels. Furthermore, an extra $2\times2$ depthwise convolution coupled with improved symmetric padding strategy is employed to compensate for the side effect brought by spatially separable convolutions. XSepConv is designed to be an efficient alternative to vanilla depthwise convolution with large kernel sizes. To verify this, we use XSepConv for the state-of-the-art architecture MobileNetV3-Small and carry out extensive experiments on four highly competitive benchmark datasets (CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, SVHN and Tiny-ImageNet) to demonstrate that XSepConv can indeed strike a better trade-off between accuracy and efficiency.

Capturing an all-in-focus image with a single camera is difficult since the depth of field of the camera is usually limited. An alternative method to obtain the all-in-focus image is to fuse several images focusing at different depths. However, existing multi-focus image fusion methods cannot obtain clear results for areas near the focused/defocused boundary (FDB). In this paper, a novel α-matte boundary defocus model is proposed to generate realistic training data with the defocus spread effect precisely modeled, especially for areas near the FDB. Based on this α-matte defocus model and the generated data, a cascaded boundary aware convolutional network termed MMF-Net is proposed and trained, aiming to achieve clearer fusion results around the FDB. More specifically, the MMF-Net consists of two cascaded sub-nets for initial fusion and boundary fusion, respectively; these two sub-nets are designed to first obtain a guidance map of FDB and then refine the fusion near the FDB. Most state-of-the-art semantic segmentation approaches only achieve high accuracy in good conditions. In practically-common but less-discussed adverse environmental conditions, their performance can decrease enormously. Existing studies usually cast the handling of segmentation in adverse conditions as a separate post-processing step after signal restoration, making the segmentation performance largely depend on the quality of restoration. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning framework to tackle semantic segmentation and image restoration in adverse environmental conditions in a holistic manner. The proposed approach contains two components: Semantically-Guided Adaptation, which exploits semantic information from degraded images to refine the segmentation; and Exemplar-Guided Synthesis, which restores images from semantic label maps given degraded exemplars as the guidance. Our method cooperatively leverages the complementarity and interdependence of low-level restoration and high-level segmentation in adverse environmental conditions. Extensive experiments on various datasets demonstrate that our approach can not only improve the accuracy of semantic segmentation with degradation cues, but also boost the perceptual quality and structural similarity of image restoration with semantic guidance.
