We simultaneously incorporate two common extensions of the hadron resonance gas model, namely the addition of extra, unconfirmed resonances to the particle list and the excluded volume repulsive interactions. We emphasize the complementary nature of these two extensions and identify combinations of conserved charge susceptibilities that allow to constrain them separately. In particular, ratios of second-order susceptibilities like $\chi_{11}^{BQ}/\chi_2^B$ and $\chi_{11}^{BS}/\chi_2^B$ are sensitive only to the baryon spectrum, while fourth-to-second order ratios like $\chi_4^B/\chi_2^B$, $\chi_{31}^{BS}/\chi_{11}^{BS}$, or $\chi_{31}^{BQ}/\chi_{11}^{BQ}$ are mainly determined by repulsive interactions. Analysis of the available lattice results suggests the presence of both the extra states in the baryon-strangeness sector and the repulsive baryonic interaction, with indications that hyperons have a smaller repulsive core than non-strange baryons. The modified hadron resonance gas model presented here significantly improves the description of lattice QCD susceptibilities at chemical freeze-out and can be used for the analysis of event-by-event fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, version published in Phys. Many simulations of relativistic heavy ion collisions involve the switching from relativistic hydrodynamics to kinetic particle transport. This switching entails the sampling of particles from the distribution of energy, momentum and conserved currents provided by hydrodynamics. Usually this sampling ensures the conservation of these quantities only on the average, i.e. the conserved quantities may actually fluctuate among the sampled particle configurations and only their averages over many such configurations agree with their values from hydrodynamics. Here we apply a recently invented method [Oliinychenko, Koch; PRL 123, 18, 182302 (2019)] to ensure conservation laws for each sampled configuration in spatially compact regions (patches) and study their effects: from the well-known (micro-)canonical suppression of means and variances to little studied (micro-)canonical correlations and higher order fluctuations. Most of these effects are sensitive to the patch size. Many of them do not disappear even in the thermodynamic limit, when the patch size goes to infinity. The developed method is essential for particlization of stochastic hydrodynamics. We show that flavor-diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities of light quarks at vanishing chemical potential can be calculated consistently assuming the baryon density and isospin density dependence of QCD to be expressed by a vector-isoscalar and a vector-isovector coupling, respectively. At the mean-field level, their expression depends only on the effective medium-dependent couplings and quark thermodynamic potential. The strength of the couplings can be then estimated from the model using lattice QCD data as an input.

We consider the two flavor version of the Linear Sigma Model as well as of the Nambu Jona-Lasinio model, at finite temperature and quark chemical potential, beyond the Mean Field Approximation. Using parameter values for the pion and quark current masses which weakly break chiral symmetry we show that both models can present more than one critical end point. In particular, we explicitly show that the appearance of a new critical point associated with a first order line at high temperature and low densities could help to conciliate some lattice results with model predictions. Using different techniques, we perform an extensive thermodynamical analysis to understand the physical nature of the different critical points. For both models, our results suggest that the new first order line which starts at vanishing chemical potential has a more chiral character than the usual line which displays a character more reminiscent of a liquid-gas phase transition., Comment: 29 pages, 25 figures

We analytically calculate the contribution of transverse momentum conservation to the azimuthal correlations that have been proposed as signals for possible local strong parity violation and recently measured in heavy ion collisions. These corrections are of the order of the inverse of the total final state particle multiplicity and thus are of the same order as the observed signal. The corrections contribute with the same sign to both like-sign and opposite-sign pair correlations. Their dependence on the momentum is in qualitative agreement with the measurements by the STAR collaboration, while the pseudorapidity dependence differs from the data., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures

In this paper we discuss the fluidity of the hot and dense QCD matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions in comparison with various other fluids, and in particular suggest its possible supercriticality. After examining the proper way to compare non-relativistic and relativistic fluids from both thermodynamic and hydrodynamic perspectives, we propose a new fluidity measure which shows certain universality for a remarkable diversity of critical fluids. We then demonstrate that a fluid in its supercritical regime has its fluidity considerably enhanced. This may suggest a possible relationship between the seemingly good fluidity of the QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions at center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=200 \rm AGeV$ and the supercriticality of this matter with respect to the Critical-End-Point on the QCD phase diagram. Based on such observation, we predict an even better fluidity of the matter to be created in heavy ion collisions at LHC energy and the loss of good fluidity at certain lower beam energy. The correlation between baryon number and strangeness elucidates the nature of strongly interacting matter, such as that formed transiently in high-energy nuclear collisions. This diagnostic can be extracted theoretically from lattice QCD calculations and experimentally from event-by-event fluctuations. The analysis of present lattice results above the critical temperature severely limits the presence of q-qbar bound states, thus supporting a picture of independent (quasi)quarks., Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures, Revised: several sign typos have been fixed (the PRL version is correct)

We calculate the time evolution of fluctuations for rare particles such as e.g. kaons in 1 AGeV or charmonium in 200 AGeV heavy ion collisions. We find that these fluctuations are a very sensitive probe of the degree of chemical equilibration reached in these collisions. Furthermore, measuring the second factorial moment the size of the initial population can be determined.

We discuss how dilepton production is related to chiral symmetry and its restoration. We then analyse presently available data by the CERES collaboration in this context. We find that the present data do not support any conclusions concerning the restoration of chiral symmetry. The medium modifications of antikaons in dense matter are studied in a coupled channel calculation for scenarios more closely related to the environment encountered in heavy-ion collisions. We find that the optical potential of the antikaons turns repulsive or is drastically reduced for finite momenta or finite temperature. Hence, the antikaon mass does not decrease substantially in heavy-ion collisions to provide an explanation for the observed antikaon production rates at threshold. We demonstrate that the in-medium production cross section of antikaons via pions and Sigma hyperons is remarkably enhanced up to an order of magnitude. The effect of in medium correction on the resulting kaon spectra is studied within a transport model. We find that both in medium correction lead to about the same enhancement of the spectrum. We discuss an event-by-event fluctuation analysis of particle production in heavy ion collisions. We compare different approaches to the evaluation of the event-by-event dynamical fluctuations in quantities defined on groups of particles, such quantities as mean transverse momentum, transverse momentum spectra slope, strength of anisotropic flow, etc.. The direct computation of the dynamical fluctuations and the sub-event method are discussed in more detail. The lifetime of a disoriented chiral condensate formed within a heat bath of pions is calculated assuming temperatures and densities attainable at present and future heavy-ion colliders. A generalization of the reduction formula to include coherent states allows us to derive a formula for the decay rate. We predict the half-life to be between 4 and 7 fm/c, depending on the assumed pion density. We consider production of dilepton pairs through coherent electro-magnetic radiation during nuclear collisions. We show that the number of pairs produced through bremsstrahlung is about two orders of magnitude smaller than the yield measured by the CERES collaboration. Therefore, coherent bremsstrahlung can be ruled out as an explanation for the observed enhancement of low mass dileptons in CERES and HELIOS., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

The present status of our understanding of low mass dilepton production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed. The E814-collaboration has found a component of very low $m_t$ $K^+$ mesons with a slope parameter of $T \sim 15 \, \rm MeV$. We will present a scenario which explains the observed slope parameter and which allows us to predict the expected slope parameter for kaons produced in heavier systems such as Au+Au.
