In this study, we investigate the structure-stability relationship of hypothetical Nd-Fe-B crystal structures using descriptor-relevance analysis and the t-SNE dimensionality reduction method. 149 hypothetical Nd-Fe-B crystal structures are generated from 5967 LA-T-X host structures in Open Quantum Materials Database by using the elemental substitution method, with LA denoting lanthanides, T denoting transition metals, and X denoting light elements such as B, C, N and O. A hypothetical crystal structure is created by substituting all lanthanide sites with Nd, all transition metal sites with Fe, and all light element sites with B. High-throughput first-principle calculations are applied to evaluate the phase stability of these structures. Twenty of them are found to be potentially formable. The descriptor-relevance analysis on the orbital field matrix (OFM) materials' descriptor reveals the average atomic coordination number as the essential factor in determining the structure stability of these substituted Nd-Fe-B crystal structures. 19 among 20 hypothetical structures that are found potentially formable have an average coordination number larger than 6.5. In addition, all the local structures represented by the OFM descriptors are integrated into a visible space to study the detailed correlation between their characteristics and the stability of the crystal structure to which they belong. We discover that unstable substituted structures frequently carry Nd and Fe local structures with two prominent points: low average coordination numbers and fully occupied B neighboring atoms. Moreover, there are only three popular forms of B local structures appearing on all potentially formable substituted structures: cage networks, planar networks, and interstitial sites. We searched for stable crystal structures of YFe$_{12}$ using a crystal structure prediction technique based on a genetic algorithm and first-principles calculations. We obtained two monoclinic $C2/m$ structures as metastable phases that are different from the well-known ThMn$_{12}$ structure. These two phases have advantages in their magnetism over the ThMn$_{12}$ structure: The total magnetization $M$ is increased from 25.6 $\mu_{\text{B}}$/f.u. up to 26.8 $\mu_{\text{B}}$/f.u. by the transformations. We also calculated Curie temperature $T_{\text{C}}$ for these structures within the mean-field approximation and predicted the increase of $T_{\text{C}}$ from 792 K up to 940 K, which is mainly caused by the increase of intersite magnetic couplings within the distance of 2.3--3.1\r{A}. The similar enhancements of $M$ and $T_{\text{C}}$ are also obtained in the pseudo-binary system Y(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{12}$ with $x$ of 0--0.7., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We theoretically study the structural stability of $R$Fe$_{12}$ with the ThMn$_{12}$ structure ($R$: rare-earth elements, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu, Y, or Sc, or group-IV elements, Zr or Hf) based on density functional theory. The formation energy has a strong correlation with the atomic radius of $R$. The formation energy relative to simple substances decreases as the atomic radius decreases, except for $R=$ Sc and Hf, while that relative to $R_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ and bcc Fe has a minimum for $R=$ Dy. The present results are consistent with recent experimental reports in which the partial substitution of Zr at $R$ sites stabilizes $R$Fe$_{12}$-type compounds with $R=$ Nd or Sm. Our results also suggest that the partial substitution of Y, Dy, Ho, Er, or Tm for Nd or Sm is a possible way to enhance the stability of the ThMn$_{12}$ structure. Closing of a band gap of inversion-asymmetric semiconductors always leads either to a Weyl semimetal or to a nodal-line semimetal, A band gap for electronic states in crystals governs various properties of solids, such as transport, optical, and magnetic properties. Its estimation and control have been an important issue in solid-state physics. The band gap can be controlled externally by various parameters, such as pressure, atomic compositions, and external field. Sometimes, the gap even collapses by tuning some parameter. In the field of topological insulators, this closing of the gap at a time-reversal invariant momentum indicates a band inversion, that is, it leads to a topological phase transition from a normal insulator to a topological insulator. We show, through an exhaustive study on possible space groups, that the gap closing in inversion-asymmetric crystals is universal, in the sense that the gap closing always leads either to a Weyl semimetal or to a nodal-line semimetal. We consider three-dimensional spinful systems with time-reversal symmetry. The space group of the system and the wave vector at the gap closing uniquely determine which possibility occurs and where the gap-closing points or lines lie in the wave vector space after the closing of the gap. In particular, we show that an insulator-to-insulator transition never happens, which is in sharp contrast to inversion-symmetric systems.

In nodal-line semimetals, the gaps close along loops in ${\bf k}$ space, which are not at high-symmetry points. Typical mechanisms for the emergence of nodal lines involve mirror symmetry and the $\pi$ Berry phase. Here, we show via ab initio calculations that fcc calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr) and ytterbium (Yb) have topological nodal lines with the $\pi$ Berry phase near the Fermi level, when spin-orbit interaction is neglected. In particular, Ca becomes a nodal-line semimetal at high pressure. Owing to nodal lines, the Zak phase becomes either $\pi$ or 0 depending on the wavavector ${\bf k}$, and the $\pi$ Zak phase leads to surface polarization charge. Carriers eventually screen it, leaving behind large surface dipoles. In materials with nodal lines, both the large surface polarization charge and the emergent drumhead surface states enhance Rashba splitting when heavy adatoms are present, as we have shown to occur in Bi/Sr(111) and in Bi/Ag(111)., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Recently synthesized NdFe12N has excellent magnetic properties, while it is thermodynamically unstable. Using first-principles method, we study the effect of substitutional 3d transition metal elements to the mother compound NdFe12. We find that Co has positive effect on the stability of the ThMn12 structure. In contrast with Ti substitution, Co substitution does not reduce the magnetization significantly. The crystal field parameter A_{0}^{2} is nearly unchanged by Co substitution, and nitrogenation to NdFe11Co greatly enhances A_{0}^{2}. This suggests that Co is a good candidate as a substitutional element for NdFe12N., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

We study Weyl nodes in materials with broken inversion symmetry. We find based on first-principles calculations that trigonal Te and Se have multiple Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. The conduction bands have a spin splitting similar to the Rashba splitting around the H points, but unlike the Rashba splitting the spin directions are radial, forming a hedgehog spin texture around the H points, with a nonzero Pontryagin index for each spin-split conduction band. The Weyl semimetal phase, which has never been observed in real materials without inversion symmetry, is realized under pressure. The evolution of the spin texture by varying the pressure can be explained by the evolution of the Weyl nodes in k space., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We theoretically explore the crystal structures of K$_x$picene, for which a new aromatic superconductivity has recently been discovered for $x=3$, by systematically performing first-principles full structural optimization covering the concentration range $x=1$-4. The crystal symmetry (space group) of the pristine picene is shown to be preserved in all the optimized structures despite significant deformations of each picene molecule and vast rearrangements of herringbone array of molecules. For K$_x$picene ($x=1$-4) optimization indicates that (i) multiple structures exist in some cases, and (ii) dopants can enter not only in the interlayer region between the stack of herringbone structures, but also in the intralayer region. In the electronic structure obtained with the local density approximation for the optimized structures, the dopants are shown to affect the electronic properties not only through the rearrangement and distortion of molecules, but also molecule-metal atom hybridization. In other words, the rigid-band approximation is invalidated for multifold reasons. As a consequence the resultant Fermi surface exhibits a variety of multiband structures which take diverse topology for K$_1$picene and K$_3$picene., Comment: 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. International audience; Superconductivity has recently been discovered in several families of iron-based compounds, but despite intense research even such basic electronic properties of these materials as Fermi surfaces, effective electron masses and orbital characters are still subject to debate. Here, we address an issue that has not been considered before, namely the consequences of dynamical screening of the Coulomb interactions between Fe d electrons.We demonstrate that dynamical screening effects are important not only for higher-energy spectral features, such as correlation satellites seen in photoemission spectroscopy, but also for the low-energy electronic structure. Our analysis indicates that BaFe2As2 is a strongly correlated compound with strongly dopingand temperature-dependent properties. In the hole-overdoped regime an incoherent metal is found, whereas Fermi-liquid behaviour is recovered in the undoped compound. At optimal doping, the self-energy exhibits an unusual square-root energy dependence, which leads to strong band renormalizations near the Fermi level.

In materials like transition metals oxides where electronic Coulomb correlations impede a description in terms of standard band-theories, the application of genuine many-body techniques is inevitable. Interfacing the realism of density-functional based methods with the virtues of Hubbard-like Hamiltonians, requires the joint ab initio construction of transfer integrals and interaction matrix elements (like the Hubbard U) in a localized basis set. In this work, we employ the scheme of maximally localized Wannier functions and the constrained random phase approximation to create effective low-energy models for Manganese monoxide, and track their evolution under external pressure. We find that in the low pressure antiferromagnetic phase, the compression results in an increase of the bare Coulomb interaction for specific orbitals. As we rationalized in recent model considerations [Phys. Rev. B 79, 235133 (2009)], this seemingly counter-intuitive behavior is a consequence of the delocalization of the respective Wannier functions. The change of screening processes does not alter this tendency, and thus, the screened on-site component of the interaction - the Hubbard U of the effective low-energy system - increases with pressure as well. The orbital anisotropy of the effects originates from the orientation of the orbitals vis-a-vis the deformation of the unit-cell. Within the high pressure paramagnetic phase, on the other hand, we find the significant increase of the Hubbard U is insensitive to the orbital orientation and almost exclusively owing to a substantial weakening of screening channels upon compression., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The role of electronic Coulomb correlations in iron-based superconductors is an important open question. We provide theoretical evidence for strong correlation effects in the FeSe compound, based on dynamical mean field calculations. A lower Hubbard band is found in the spectral properties. Moreover, together with significant orbital-dependent mass enhancements, we find that the normal state is a bad metal over an extended temperature range, implying a non-Fermi liquid. Correlated materials are extremely sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature or pressure. Describing the electronic properties of such systems often requires applying many-body techniques to effective low energy problems in the spirit of the Hubbard model, or extensions thereof. While the effect of pressure on structures and bands has been investigated extensively within density-functional based methods, the pressure dependence of electron-electron interactions has so far received little attention. As a step toward ab initio pressure studies for realistic systems within a setup of maximally localized Wannier functions and the constrained random phase approximation, we examine in this paper the paradigmatic pressure dependence of Coulomb interactions. While compression commonly causes the "extension" of Wannier functions, and thus transfer elements, to grow, we find the -- seemingly counter-intuitive -- tendency that the bare Coulomb interaction increases under compression as well. We reconcile these behaviors by appealing to a semi-analytical tight-binding model. We moreover argue that, for this model, the requirement of maximal Wannier localization is equivalent to maximizing the Coulomb interaction matrix elements. We then apply the above first principles techniques to fcc hydrogen under pressure. While we find our comprehension of the bare Coulomb interaction confirmed, the induced changes in screening strengths lead to an effective one band model with a Hubbard interaction that is non-monotonous under pressure., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We estimate theoretically the strength of the local Coulomb interaction for the Fe 3d and Ce 4f shells in the REFeAsO compunds. In LaFeAsO and CeFeAsO we obtain values of the local Coulomb interaction parameter U for both Fe and Ce which are larger than those of elemental Fe and Ce metals. The Fe 3d bandwidth of REFeAsO is found to increase slightly as one moves along the RE-series. Using a combined local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) approach, we study the behaviour of the localized 4f states along the rare-earth oxyarsenides REFeAsO series (RE=Ce,Pr,Nd). In CeFeAsO the occupied Ce 4f band is located just below the Fe 3d band leading possibly to a Kondo screening of the 4f local moment under applied pressure, while the unscreened local moment behaviour is expected for the Pr and Nd compounds., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We discuss a maximally localized Wannier function approach for constructing lattice models from first-principles electronic structure calculations, where the effective Coulomb interactions are calculated in the constrained random-phase-approximation. The method is applied to the 3d transition metals and a perovskite (SrVO_3). We also optimize the Wannier functions by unitary transformation so that U is maximized.
