We present a novel 2D flux density model for observed HI emission lines combined with a Bayesian stacking technique to measure the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation below the nominal detection threshold. We simulate a galaxy catalogue, which includes HI lines described either with Gaussian or busy function profiles, and HI data cubes with a range of noise and survey areas similar to the MeerKAT International Giga-Hertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. With prior knowledge of redshifts, stellar masses and inclinations of spiral galaxies, we find that our model can reconstruct the input baryonic Tully-Fisher parameters (slope and zero point) most accurately in a relatively broad redshift range from the local Universe to $z = 0.3$ for all the considered levels of noise and survey areas, and up to $z = 0.55$ for a nominal noise of $90\,\mu$Jy/channel over 5 deg$^{2}$. Our model can also determine the $M_{\rm HI} - M_{\star}$ relation for spiral galaxies beyond the local Universe, and account for the detailed shape of the HI emission line, which is crucial for understanding the dynamics of spiral galaxies. Thus, we have developed a Bayesian stacking technique for measuring the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for galaxies at low stellar and/or HI masses and/or those at high redshift, where the direct detection of HI requires prohibitive exposure times., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. We investigate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) in the $(100\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ Simba hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulation together with a higher-resolution $(25\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ Simba run, for over $10,000$ disk-dominated, HI-rich galaxies. We generate simulated galaxy rotation curves from the mass distribution, which we show yields similar results to using the gas rotational velocities. From this we measure the galaxy rotation velocity $V_{\rm circ}$ using four metrics: $V_{\rm max}, V_{\rm flat}, V_{2R_e},$ and $V_{\rm polyex}$. We compare the predicted BTFR to the SPARC observational sample and find broad agreement. In detail, however, Simba is biased towards higher $V_{\rm circ}$ by up to 0.1 dex. We find evidence for the flattening of the BTFR in $V_{\rm circ}>300$ km s$^{-1}$ galaxies, in agreement with recent observational findings. Simba's rotation curves are more peaked for lower mass galaxies, in contrast with observations, suggesting overly bulge-dominated dwarf galaxies in our sample. We investigate for residuals around the BTFR versus HI mass, stellar mass, gas fraction, and specific star formation rate, which provide testable predictions for upcoming BTFR surveys. Simba's BTFR shows sub-optimal resolution convergence, with the higher-resolution run lowering $V$ in better agreement with data., 18 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using a recent homogeneous sample of 40 high quality velocity dispersion profiles for Galactic globular clusters, we study the low gravitational acceleration regime relevant to the outskirts of these systems. We find that a simple empirical profile having a central Gaussian component and a constant large radius asymptote, $\sigma_{\infty}$, accurately describes the variety of observed velocity dispersion profiles. We use published population synthesis models, carefully tailored to each individual cluster, to estimate mass to light ratios from which total stellar masses, $M$, are inferred. We obtain a clear scaling, reminiscent of the galactic Tully-Fisher relation of $\sigma_{\infty}( km s^{-1})= 0.084^{+0.075}_{-0.040} (M/M_{\odot})^{0.3 \pm 0.051} $, which is interesting to compare to the deep MOND limit of $\sigma_{\infty} (km s^{-1})=0.2(M/M_{\odot})^{0.25}$. Under a Newtonian interpretation, our results constitute a further restriction on models where initial conditions are crafted to yield the outer flattening observed today. Within a modified gravity scheme, as the globular clusters studied are not isolated objects in the deep MOND regime, the results obtained point towards a modified gravity where the external field effect of MOND does not appear, or is much suppressed., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Galaxies covering several orders of magnitude in stellar mass and a variety of Hubble types have been shown to follow the "Radial Acceleration Relation" (RAR), a relationship between $g_{\rm obs}$, the observed circular acceleration of the galaxy, and $g_{\rm bar}$, the acceleration due to the total baryonic mass of the galaxy. For accelerations above $10^{10}~{\rm m \, s}^{-2}$, $g_{\rm obs}$ traces $g_{\rm bar}$, asymptoting to the 1:1 line. Below this scale, there is a break in the relation such that $\rm g_{\rm obs} \sim g_{\rm bar}^{1/2}$. We show that the RAR slope, scatter and the acceleration scale are all natural consequences of the well-known baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR). We further demonstrate that galaxies with a variety of baryonic and dark matter (DM) profiles and a wide range of dark halo and galaxy properties (well beyond those expected in CDM) lie on the RAR if we simply require that their rotation curves satisfy the BTFR. We explore conditions needed to break this degeneracy: sub-kpc resolved rotation curves inside of "cored" DM-dominated profiles and/or outside $\gg 100\,$kpc could lie on BTFR but deviate in the RAR, providing new constraints on DM., Comment: 5 pages, submitted to MNRAS

We present the catalog of ∼31,500 extragalactic H i line sources detected by the completed Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey out to z < 0.06, including both high signal-to-noise ratio (>6.5) detections and ones of lower quality that coincide in both position and recessional velocity with galaxies of known redshift. We review the observing technique, data reduction pipeline, and catalog construction process, focusing on details of particular relevance to understanding the catalog's compiled parameters. We further describe and make available the digital H i line spectra associated with the cataloged sources. In addition to the extragalactic H i line detections, we report nine confirmed OH megamasers (OHMs) and 10 OHM candidates at 0.16 < z < 0.22 whose OH line signals are redshifted into the ALFALFA frequency band. Because of complexities in data collection and processing associated with the use of a feed-horn array on a complex single-dish antenna in the terrestrial radio frequency interference environment, we also present a list of suggestions and caveats for consideration by users of the ALFALFA extragalactic catalog for future scientific investigations.© 2018. In recent work, Lelli et al. (2016) argue that the tightness of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) of the SPARC galaxy sample, and the weakness of the correlation of its residuals with effective radius, pose challenges to LCDM cosmology. In this Letter we calculate the statistical significance of these results in the framework of halo abundance matching, which imposes a canonical galaxy-halo connection. Taking full account of sample variance among SPARC-like realisations of the parent halo population, we find the scatter in the predicted BTFR to be 3.6 sigma too high, but the correlation of its residuals with galaxy size to be naturally weak. Further, we find abundance matching to generate BTFR curvature in 3.0 sigma disagreement with the data, and a fraction of galaxies with non-flat rotation curves somewhat larger than observed., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; revised to match MNRAS Letters accepted version

Simulating dwarf galaxy halos in a reionizing Universe puts severe constraints on the sub-grid model employed in the simulations. Using the same sub-grid model that works for simulations without a UV-background (UVB) results in gas poor galaxies that stop forming stars very early on, except for halos with high masses. This is in strong disagreement with observed galaxies, which are gas rich and star forming down to a much lower mass range. To resolve this discrepancy, we ran a large suite of isolated dwarf galaxy simulations to explore a wide variety of sub-grid models and parameters, including timing and strength of the UVB, strength of the stellar feedback, and metallicity dependent Pop III feedback. We compared these simulations to observed dwarf galaxies by means of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR), which links the baryonic content of a galaxy to the observationally determined strength of its gravitational potential. We found that the results are robust to changes in the UVB. The strength of the stellar feedback shifts the results on the BTFR, but does not help to form gas rich galaxies at late redshifts. Only by including Pop III feedback are we able to produce galaxies that lie on the observational BTFR and that have neutral gas and ongoing star formation at redshift zero., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 25 pages, 2 tables and 36 figures. As part of the Bluedisk survey we analyse the radial gas-phase metallicity profiles of 50 late-type galaxies We compare the metallicity profiles of a sample of HI-rich galaxies against a control sample of HI-'normal' galaxies. We find the metallicity gradient of a galaxy to be strongly correlated with its HI mass fraction (M(HI) / Mstar). We note that some galaxies exhibit a steeper metallicity profile in the outer disc than in the inner disc. These galaxies are found in both the HI-rich and control samples. This contradicts a previous indication that these outer drops are exclusive to HI-rich galaxies. These effects are not driven by bars, although we do find some indication that barred galaxies have flatter metallicity profiles. By applying a simple analytical model we are able to account for the variety of metallicity profiles that the two samples present. The success of this model implies that the metallicity in these isolated galaxies may be in a local equilibrium, regulated by star formation. This insight could provide an explanation of the observed local mass-metallicity relation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We estimate the stellar masses of disk galaxies with two independent methods: a photometrically self-consistent color$-$mass-to-light ratio relation (CMLR) from population synthesis models, and the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) calibrated by gas rich galaxies. These two methods give consistent results. The CMLR correctly converts distinct Tully-Fisher relations in different bands into the same BTFR. The BTFR is consistent with $M_b \propto V_f^4$ over nearly six decades in mass, with no hint of a change in slope over that range. The intrinsic scatter in the BTFR is negligible, implying that the IMF of disk galaxies is effectively universal. The gas rich BTFR suggests an absolute calibration of the stellar mass scale that yields nearly constant mass-to-light ratios in the near-infrared (NIR): $0.57\;M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$ in $K_s$ and $0.45\;M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$ at $3.6\mu$. There is only modest intrinsic scatter ($\sim 0.12$ dex) about these typical values. We have investigated, using both a theoretical and an empirical approach, the frequency of low redshift galaxy-galaxy lensing systems in which the signature of weak lensing might be directly detectable. We find good agreement between these two approaches. In order to make a theoretical estimate of the weak lensing shear, $\gamma$, for each galaxy in a catalogue, we have made an estimate of the asymptotic circular velocity from the stellar mass using three different approaches: from a simulation based relation, from an empirically-derived relation, and using the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Using data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly redshift survey we estimate the frequency of detectable weak lensing at low redshift. We find that to a redshift of $z\sim 0.6$, the probability of a galaxy being weakly lensed by at least $\gamma = 0.02$ is $\sim 0.01$. A scatter in the $M_*-M_h$ relation results in a shift towards higher measured shears for a given population of galaxies. Given this, and the good probability of weak lensing at low redshifts, we have investigated the feasibility of measuring the scatter in the $M_*-M_h$ relation using shear statistics. This is a novel measurement, and is made possible because DSM is able to make individual \itshape direct~\upshape shear measurements, in contrast to traditional weak lensing techniques which can only make statistical measurements. We estimate that for a shear measurement error of $\Delta\gamma = 0.02$ (consistent with the sensitivity of DSM), a sample of $\sim$50,000 spatially and spectrally resolved galaxies would allow a measurement of the scatter in the $M_*-M_h$ relation to be made. We study the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation (TFR, stellar mass versus rotation velocity) for a morphologically blind selection of emission line galaxies in the field at redshifts 0.1 $, Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 14 pages, 7 figures

In this work we present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations of a pilot sample of 15 early-type galaxies (ETGs) drawn from the MASSIVE galaxy survey, a volume-limited integral-field spectroscopic study of the most massive ETGs ($M_* >10^{11.5}M_\odot$) within 108 Mpc. These objects were selected because they showed signs of an interstellar medium and/or star formation. A large amount of gas ($>$2$\times$10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) is present in 10 out of 15 objects, and these galaxies have gas fractions higher than expected based on extrapolation from lower mass samples. We tentatively interpret this as evidence that stellar mass loss and hot halo cooling may be starting to play a role in fuelling the most massive galaxies. These MASSIVE ETGs seem to have lower star-formation efficiencies (SFE=SFR/M$_{\rm H2}$) than spiral galaxies, but the SFEs derived are consistent with being drawn from the same distribution found in other lower mass ETG samples. This suggests that the SFE is not simply a function of stellar mass, but that local, internal processes are more important for regulating star formation. Finally we used the CO line profiles to investigate the high-mass end of the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR). We find that there is a break in the slope of the TFR for ETGs at high masses (consistent with previous studies). The strength of this break correlates with the stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxies, suggesting it is caused by additional baryonic mass being present in the centre of massive ETGs. Dust extinction and stellar confusion by the Milky Way reduce the efficiency of detecting galaxies at low Galactic latitudes, creating the so-called Zone of Avoidance. This stands as a stumbling block in charting the distribution of galaxies and cosmic flow fields, and therewith our understanding of the local dynamics in the Universe (CMB dipole, convergence radius of bulk flows). For instance, ZoA galaxies are generally excluded from the whole-sky Tully-Fisher Surveys ($|b| \leq 5^\circ$) even if catalogued. We show here that by fine-tuning the near-infrared TF relation, there is no reason not to extend peculiar velocity surveys deeper into the ZoA. Accurate axial ratios ($b/a$) are crucial to both the TF sample selection and the resulting TF distances. We simulate the effect of dust extinction on the geometrical properties of galaxies. As expected, galaxies appear rounder with increasing obscuration level, even affecting existing TF samples. We derive correction models and demonstrate that we can reliably reproduce the intrinsic axial ratio from the observed value up to extinction level of about $A_J\simeq3$ mag ($A_V\sim11$ mag), we also recover a fair fraction of galaxies that otherwise would fall out of an uncorrected inclination limited galaxy sample. We present a re-calibration of the 2MTF relation in the NIR $J$, $H$, and $K_s$-bands for isophotal rather than total magnitudes, using their same calibration sample. Both TF relations exhibit similar scatter at high Galactic latitudes. However, the isophotal TF relation results in a significant improvement in the scatter for galaxies in the ZoA, and low surface brightness galaxies in general, because isophotal apertures are more robust in the face of significant stellar confusion., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a mid-infrared Tully-Fisher (TF) relation using photometry from the 3.4-micron W1 band of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. The WISE TF relation is formed from 568 galaxies taken from the all-sky 2MASS Tully-Fisher (2MTF) galaxy catalog, spanning a range of environments including field, group, and cluster galaxies. This constitutes the largest mid-infrared TF relation constructed, to date. After applying a number of corrections to galaxy magnitudes and line widths, we measure a master TF relation given by M_corr = -22.24 - 10.05[log(W_corr) - 2.5], with an average dispersion of sigma_WISE = 0.686 magnitudes. There is some tension between WISE TF and a preliminary 3.6-micron relation, which has a shallower slope and almost no intrinsic dispersion. However, our results agree well with a more recent relation constructed from a large sample of cluster galaxies. We additionally compare WISE TF to the near-infrared 2MTF template relations, finding a good agreement between the TF parameters and total dispersions of WISE TF and the 2MTF K-band template. This fact, coupled with typical galaxy colors of (K - W1) ~ 0, suggests that these two bands are tracing similar stellar populations, including the older, centrally-located stars in the galactic bulge which can (for galaxies with a prominent bulge) dominate the light profile., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. Distance measures on a coherent scale around the sky are required to address the outstanding cosmological problems of the Hubble Constant and of departures from the mean cosmic flow. The correlation between galaxy luminosities and rotation rates can be used to determine distances to many thousands of galaxies in a wide range of environments potentially out to 200 Mpc. Mid-infrared (3.6 microns) photometry with the Spitzer Space Telescope is particularly valuable as the source of the luminosities because it provides products of uniform quality across the sky. From a perch above the atmosphere, essentially the total magnitude of targets can be registered in exposures of a few minutes. Extinction is minimal and the flux is dominated by the light from old stars which is expected to correlate with the mass of the targets. In spite of the superior photometry, the correlation between mid-infrared luminosities and rotation rates extracted from neutral hydrogen profiles is slightly degraded from the correlation found with I band luminosities. A color correction recovers a correlation that provides comparable accuracy to that available at I band (~20% 1sigma in an individual distance) while retaining the advantages identified above. Without the color correction the relation between linewidth and [3.6] magnitudes is M^{b,i,k,a}_{[3.6]} = -20.34 - 9.74 (log W_{mx}^{i} -2.5). This description is found with a sample of 213 galaxies in 13 clusters that define the slope and 26 galaxies with Cepheid or tip of the red giant branch distances that define the zero point. A color corrected parameter M_{C_{[3.6]}} is constructed that has reduced scatter: M_{C_{[3.6]}} = -20.34 - 9.13 (log W_{mx}^{i} -2.5). Consideration of the 7 calibration clusters beyond 50 Mpc, outside the domain of obvious peculiar velocities, provides a preliminary Hubble Constant estimate of H_0=74+/-5 km/s/Mpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 14 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

In order to determine what processes govern the assembly history of galaxies with rotating disks, we examine the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation over a wide range in redshift partitioned according to whether or not galaxies contain a prominent bulge. Using our earlier Keck spectroscopic sample, for which bulge/total parameters are available from analyses of HST images, we find that bulgeless disk galaxies with z > 0.8 present a significant offset from the local Tully-Fisher relation whereas, at all redshifts probed, those with significant bulges fall along the local relation. Our results support the suggestion that bulge growth may somehow expedite the maturing of disk galaxies onto the Tully-Fisher relation. We discuss a variety of physical hypotheses that may explain this result in the context of kinematic observations of star-forming galaxies at redshifts z = 0 and z > 2., 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

The observed rotation curves of disc galaxies, ranging from late-type dwarf galaxies to early-type spirals, can be fit remarkably well simply by scaling up the contributions of the stellar and HI discs. This `baryonic scaling model' can explain the full breadth of observed rotation curves with only two free parameters. For a small fraction of galaxies, in particular early-type spiral galaxies, HI scaling appears to fail in the outer parts, possibly due to observational effects or ionization of the HI. The overall success of the baryonic scaling model suggests that the well-known global coupling between the baryonic mass of a galaxy and its rotation velocity (known as the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation), applies at a more local level as well, and it seems to imply a link between the baryonic mass distribution and the distribution of total mass (including dark matter)., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we combine high resolution N-body simulations with a semi analytical model of galaxy formation to study the effects of a possible Warm Dark Matter (WDM) component on the observable properties of galaxies. We compare three WDM models with a dark matter mass of 0.5, 0.75 and 2.0 keV, with the standard Cold Dark Matter case. For a fixed set of parameters describing the baryonic physics the WDM models predict less galaxies at low (stellar) masses, as expected due to the suppression of power on small scales, while no substantial difference is found at the high mass end. However these differences in the stellar mass function, vanish when different set of parameters are used to describe the (largely unknown) galaxy formation processes. We show that is possible to break this degeneracy between DM properties and the parameterization of baryonic physics by combining observations on the stellar mass function with the Tully-Fisher relation (the relation between stellar mass and the rotation velocity at large galactic radii as probed by resolved HI rotation curves). [Abridged] We present ground-based MDM V-band and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um-band photometric observations of the 72 representative galaxies of the SAURON Survey. In combination with the SAURON stellar velocity dispersion measured within an effective radius (se), this allows us to explore the location of our galaxies in the main scaling relations. We investigate the dependence of these relations on our recent kinematical classification of early-type galaxies (i.e. Slow/Fast Rotators) and the stellar populations. Slow Rotator and Fast Rotator E/S0 galaxies do not populate distinct locations in the scaling relations, although Slow Rotators display a smaller intrinsic scatter. Surprisingly, extremely young objects do not display the bluest (V-[3.6]) colours in our sample, as is usually the case in optical colours. This can be understood in the context of the large contribution of TP-AGB stars to the infrared, even for young populations, resulting in a very tight (V-[3.6]) - se relation that in turn allows us to define a strong correlation between metallicity and velocity dispersion. Many Sa galaxies appear to follow the Fundamental Plane defined by E/S0 galaxies. Galaxies that appear offset from the relations correspond mostly to objects with extremely young populations, with signs of on-going, extended star formation. We correct for this effect in the Fundamental Plane, by replacing luminosity with stellar mass using an estimate of the stellar mass-to-light ratio, so that all galaxies are part of a tight, single relation. The new estimated coefficients are consistent in both photometric bands and suggest that differences in stellar populations account for about half of the observed tilt with respect to the virial prediction. We measure the contribution of galaxy disks to the overall gravitational potential of 30 nearly face-on intermediate-to-late-type spirals from the DiskMass Survey. The central vertical velocity dispersion of the disk stars, sigma(z,R=0), is related to the maximum rotation speed (Vmax) as sigma(z,R=0) ~ 0.26 Vmax, consistent with previous measurements for edge-on disk galaxies and a mean stellar velocity ellipsoid axial ratio sigma(z) / sigma(R) = 0.6. For reasonable values of disk oblateness, this relation implies these galaxy disks are submaximal. We find disks in our sample contribute only 15% to 30% of the dynamical mass within 2.2 disk scale-lengths (hR), with percentages increasing systematically with luminosity, rotation speed and redder color. These trends indicate the mass ratio of disk-to-total matter remains at or below 50% at 2.2 hR even for the most extreme, fast-rotating disks (Vmax > 300 km/s), of the reddest rest-frame, face-on color (B-K ~ 4 mag), and highest luminosity (M(K), Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in ApJ Letters

Scaling relations are salient ingredients of galaxy evolution and formation models. I summarize results from the IMAGES survey, which combines spatially-resolved kinematics from FLAMES/GIRAFFE with imaging from HST/ACS and other facilities. Specifically, I will focus on the evolution of the stellar mass and baryonic Tully-Fisher Relations (TFR) from z=0.6 down to z=0. We found a significant evolution in zero point and scatter of the stellar mass TFR compared to the local Universe. Combined with gas fractions derived by inverting the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation, we derived for the first time a baryonic TFR at high redshift. Conversely to the stellar mass TFR, the baryonic relation does not appear to evolve in zero point, which suggests that most of the reservoir of gas converted into stars over the past 6 Gyr was already gravitationally bound to galaxies at z=0.6., Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the IAU Symposium 277 "Tracing the Ancestry of Galaxies"; 4 pages, 1 figure

The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) is an empirical relation between baryonic mass and rotation velocity in disk galaxies. It provides tests of galaxy formation models in LCDM and of alternative theories like MOND. Observations of gas rich galaxies provide a measure of the slope and normalization of the BTFR that is more accurate (if less precise) than that provided by star dominated spirals, as their masses are insensitive to the details of stellar population modeling. Recent independent data for such galaxies are consistent with Mb = AVf^4 with A = 47+/-6 Msun (km/s)^-4. This is equivalent to MOND with $a_0 = 1.3 +/- 0.3 A/s/s. The scatter in the data is consistent with being due entirely to observational uncertainties. It is unclear why the physics of galaxy formation in LCDM happens to pick out the relation predicted by MOND. We introduce a feedback efficacy parameter E to relate halo properties to those of the galaxies they host. (Abridged) We trace the interaction processes of galaxies at intermediate redshift by measuring the irregularity of their ionized gas kinematics, and investigate these irregularities as a function of the environment (cluster versus field) and of morphological type (spiral versus irregular). Our sample consists of 92 distant galaxies. 16 cluster (z~0.3 and z~0.5) and 29 field galaxies (mean z=0.44) of these have velocity fields with sufficient signal to be analyzed. We find that the fraction of galaxies that have irregular gas kinematics is remarkably similar in galaxy clusters and in the field at intermediate redshifts. The distribution of the field and cluster galaxies in (ir)regularity parameters space is also similar. On the other hand galaxies with small central concentration of light, that we see in the field sample, are absent in the cluster sample. We find that field galaxies at intermediate redshifts have more irregular velocity fields as well as more clumpy and less centrally concentrated light distributions than their local counterparts. Comparison with a SINS sample of 11 z ~ 2 galaxies shows that these distant galaxies have more irregular gas kinematics than our intermediate redshift cluster and field sample. We do not find a dependence of the irregularities in gas kinematics on morphological type. We find that two different indicators of star formation correlate with irregularity in the gas kinematics. More irregular gas kinematics, also more clumpy and less centrally concentrated light distributions of spiral field galaxies at intermediate redshifts in comparison to their local counterparts indicate that these galaxies are probably still in the process of building their disks via mechanisms such as accretion and mergers. The Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) represents a connection between fundamental galaxy parameters, such as its total mass and the mass locked in stars. Therefore, the study of the evolution of this relation in the optical and infrared bands can provide valuable information about the evolution of the individual galaxies through the changes found in each band. Recent observational results found a bend in the Tully-Fisher Relation in such a way that low mass systems lay below the linear relation described by more massive galaxies. We intend to investigate the origin of the observed features in the stellar and baryonic Tully-Fisher relations and analyse the role played by galactic outflows on their determination. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations which include Supernova feedback were performed in order to follow the dynamical evolution of galaxies. We found that Supernova feedback is a fundamental process in order to reproduce the observed trends in the stellar Tully-Fisher relation. Simulated slow rotating systems tend to have lower stellar masses than those predicted by the linear fit to the massive end of the relation, consistently with observations. This feature is not present if Supernova feedback is turned off. In the case of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, we also detect a weaker tendency for smaller systems to lie below the linear relation described by larger ones. This behaviour arises as a result of the more efficient action of Supernovae in the regulation of the star formation process and in the triggering of powerful galactic outflows in shallower potential wells which may heat up and/or expel part of the gas reservoir., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the results of a baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) study for a local sample of relatively isolated disk galaxies. We derive a BTFR with a slope near 3 measured over about 4 dex in baryon mass for our combined \textrm{H\,\scriptsize{I}} and bright spiral disk samples. This BTFR is significantly flatter and has less scatter than the TFR (stellar mass only) with its slope near 4 reported for other samples and studies. A BTFR slope near 3 is in better agreement with the expected slope from simple $\Lambda$CDM cosmological simulations that include both stellar and gas baryons. The scatter in the TFR/BTFR appears to depend on $W_{20}$: galaxies that rotate slower have more scatter. The atomic gas--to--stars ratio shows a break near $W_{20} = 250$ \kms\, probably associated with a change in star formation efficiency. In contrast the absence of such a break in the BTFR suggests that this relation was probably set at the main epoch of baryon dissipation rather than as a product of later galactic evolution., Comment: AJ - accepted

There is a large observational scatter toward low velocities in the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation if disturbed and compact objects are included. However, this scatter can be eliminated if one replaces rotation velocity with $\rm S_{\rm 0.5}$, a quantity that includes a velocity dispersion term added in quadrature with the rotation velocity. In this work we use a large suite of hydrodynamic N-body galaxy merger simulations to explore a possible mechanism for creating the observed relations. Using mock observations of the simulations, we test for the presence of observational effects and explore the relationship between $\rm S_{\rm 0.5}$ and intrinsic properties of the galaxies. We find that galaxy mergers can explain the scatter in the TF as well as the tight $\rm S_{\rm 0.5}$-stellar mass relation. Furthermore, $\rm S_{\rm 0.5}$ is correlated with the total central mass of a galaxy, including contributions due to dark matter., Comment: ApJ accepted

The flatness of the rotation curve inside spiral galaxies is interpreted as the imprint of a halo of invisible matter. Using the deepest observations of distant galaxies, we have investigated how large disks could have been formed. Observations include spatially resolved kinematics, detailed morphologies and photometry from UV to mid-IR. Six Giga-years ago, half of the present-day spirals had anomalous kinematics and morphologies that considerably affect the scatter of the Tully Fisher relation. All anomalous galaxies can be modelled through gas-rich, major mergers that lead to a rebuilt of a new disk. The spiral-rebuilding scenario is proposed as a new channel to form large disks in present-day spirals and it accounts for all the observed evolutions since the last 6 Giga-years. The value of the Hubble Parameter (H0) is determined using the morphologically type dependent Ks-band Tully-Fisher Relation (K-TFR). The slope and zero point are determined using 36 calibrator galaxies with ScI morphology. Calibration distances are adopted from direct Cepheid distances, and group or companion distances derived with the Surface Brightness Fluctuation Method or Type Ia Supernova. Distances are determined to 16 galaxy clusters and 218 ScI galaxies with minimum distances of 40.0 Mpc. From the 16 galaxy clusters a weighted mean Hubble Parameter of H0=84.2 +/-6 km s-1 Mpc-1 is found. From the 218 ScI galaxies a Hubble Parameter of H0=83.4 +/-8 km s-1 Mpc-1 is found. When the zero point of the K-TFR is corrected to account for recent results that find a Large Magellanic Cloud distance modulus of 18.39 +/-0.05 a Hubble Parameter of 88.0 +/-6 km s-1 Mpc-1 is found. A comparison with the results of the Hubble Key Project (Freedman et al 2001) is made and discrepancies between the K-TFR distances and the HKP I-TFR distances are discussed. $\Lambda$CDM numerical simulations predict that the "missing baryons" reside in a Warm-Hot gas phase in the over-dense cosmic filaments. However, there are now several theoretical and observational arguments that support the fact that galactic disks may be more massive than usually thought, containing a substantial fraction of the "missing baryons". Hereafter, we present new N-body simulations of galactic disks, where the gas content has been multiplied by a factor 5. The stability of the disk is ensured by assuming that the ISM is composed out of two partially coupled phases, a warm phase, corresponding the observed CO and HI gas and a cold collisionless phase corresponding to the unseen baryons., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Local and intermediate redshift (z~0.5) galaxy samples obey well correlated relations between the stellar population luminosity and maximal galaxy rotation that define the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation. Consensus is starting to be reached on the TF relation at z~0.5, but work at significantly higher redshifts is even more challenging, and has been limited by small galaxy sample sizes, the intrinsic scatter of galaxy properties, and increasing observational uncertainties. We present here the TF measurements of 41 galaxies at relatively high redshift, spectroscopically observed with the Keck/DEIMOS instrument by the DEEP2 project, a survey which will eventually offer a large galaxy sample of the greatest depth and number yet achieved towards this purpose. The 'first-look' sample analyzed here has a redshift range of 0.75= 0.85 and an intrinsic magnitude range from M_B of -22.66 to -20.57 (Vega). We present predictions on the evolution of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation with redshift, based on cosmological N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of disc galaxy formation and evolution. The simulations invoke star formation and stellar feedback, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metallicity dependent radiative cooling and effects of a meta-galactic UV field, including simplified radiative transfer. At z=0, the simulated and empirical TF relations are offset by about 0.4 magnitudes (1 sigma) in the B and I bands. The origin of these offsets is somewhat unclear, but it may not necessarily be a problem of the simulations only. As to evolution, we find a brightening of the TF relation between z=0 and z=1 of about 0.85 mag in rest-frame B band, with a non-evolving slope. The brightening we predict is intermediate between the (still quite discrepant) observational estimates. This evolution is primarily a luminosity effect, while the stellar mass TF relation shows negligible evolution. The individual galaxies do gain stellar mass between z=1 and z=0, by a 50-100%; but they also correspondingly increase their characteristic circular speed. We use kinematic measurements of a large sample of galaxies from the Team Keck Redshift Survey in the GOODS-N field to measure evolution in the optical and near-IR Tully-Fisher relations to z = 1.2. We construct Tully-Fisher relations with integrated line-of-sight velocity widths of ~ 1000 galaxies in B and ~ 670 in J-band; these relations have large scatter, and we derive a maximum-likelihood least squares method for fitting in the presence of scatter. The B-band Tully-Fisher relations, from z=0.4 to z=1.2, show evolution of ~ 1.0-1.5 mag internal to our sample without requiring calibration to a local TF relation. There is evolution in both Tully-Fisher intercept and slope, suggesting differential luminosity evolution. In J-band, there is evolution in slope but little evolution in overall luminosity. The slope measurements imply that bright, massive blue galaxies fade {\it more strongly} than fainter blue galaxies from z ~ 1.2 to now. This conclusion runs counter to some previous measurements and to our naive expectations, but we present a simple set of star formation histories to show that it arises naturally if massive galaxies have shorter timescales of star formation, forming most of their stars before z ~ 1, while less massive galaxies form stars at more slowly declining rates. This model predicts that the higher global star formation rate at z ~ 1 is mostly due to higher SFR in massive galaxies. The amount of fading in B-band constrains star formation timescale more strongly than redshift of formation. We have measured maximum rotation velocities (Vrot) for a sample of 111 emission-line galaxies with 0.1 ≲ z ≲ 1, observed in the fields of six clusters. From these data we construct ‘matched’ samples of 58 field and 22 cluster galaxies, covering similar ranges in redshift (0.25 ≤ z ≤ 1.0) and luminosity (MB ≤ − 19.5 mag), and selected in a homogeneous manner. We find the distributions of MB, Vrot and scalelength to be very similar for the two samples. However, using the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) we find that cluster galaxies are systematically offset with respect to the field sample by −0.7 ± 0.2 mag. This offset is significant at 3σ and persists when we account for an evolution of the field TFR with redshift. Extensive tests are performed to investigate potential differences between the measured emission lines and derived rotation curves of the cluster and field samples. However, no such differences that could affect the derived Vrot values and account for the offset are found. The most likely explanation for the TFR offset is that giant spiral galaxies in distant clusters are on average brighter, for a given rotation velocity, than those in the field. This could be due to enhanced star formation caused by an initial interaction with the intracluster medium. As our selection favours galaxies with strong emission lines, this effect may not apply to the entire cluster spiral population, but does imply that strongly star-forming spirals in clusters are more luminous than those in the field, and possibly have higher star formation rates. We construct the first "face-on" Tully-Fisher (TF) relation for 24 galaxies with inclinations between 16 degrees and 41 degrees. The enabling measurements are integral-field, echelle spectroscopy from the WIYN 3.5m telescope, which yield accurate kinematic estimates of disk inclination to 15 degrees. Kinematic inclinations are of sufficient accuracy that our measured TF scatter of 0.42 mag is comparable to other surveys even without internal-absorption corrections. Three of four galaxies with significant kinematic and photometric asymmetries also have the largest deviations from our TF relation, suggesting that asymmetries make an important contribution to TF scatter. By measuring inclinations below 40 degrees, we establish a direct path to linking this scatter to the unprojected structure of disks and making non-degenerate dynamical mass-decompositions of spiral galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures (2 color). We analyze residuals from the Tully-Fisher relation for the emission-line galaxies in the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative survey designed to fairly sample the variety of galaxy morphologies and environments in the local universe. For spirals brighter than M_R^i=-18, we find strong correlations between Tully-Fisher residuals and both B-R color and EW(Halpha). The extremes of the correlations are populated by Sa galaxies, which show consistently red colors, and spirals with morphological peculiarities, which are often blue. If we apply an EW(Halpha)-dependent or B-R color-dependent correction term to the Tully-Fisher relation, the scatter in the relation no longer increases from R to B to U but instead drops to a nearly constant level close to the scatter we expect from measurement errors. We argue that these results probably reflect correlated offsets in luminosity and color as a function of star formation history. Broadening the sample in morphology and luminosity, we find that most non-spirals brighter than M_R^i=-18 follow the same correlations as do spirals, albeit with greater scatter. However, the color and EW(Halpha) correlations do not apply to galaxies fainter than M_R^i=-18 or to emission-line S0 galaxies with anomalous gas kinematics. For the dwarf galaxy population, the parameters controlling Tully-Fisher residuals are instead related to the degree of recent disturbance: overluminous dwarfs have higher rotation curve asymmetries, brighter U-band effective surface brightnesses, and shorter gas consumption timescales than their underluminous counterparts. As a result, sample selection strongly affects the measured faint-end slope of the Tully-Fisher relation. We present the rest-frame B-band Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 8 cluster spiral galaxies at z = 0.83 and 19 field spirals at z = 0.15-0.90 based on VLT spectroscopy and HST photometry. No strong difference is detected between the cluster and the field galaxies, but we find some evidence that the cluster spirals are ~0.5-1 mag brighter than the field ones at a fixed rotation velocity. Although only a ~1.5-2 sigma result, if confirmed with larger samples this effect could be due to the cluster spirals experiencing a period of enhanced star formation while falling into the cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have determined distances and Hubble ratios for galaxies at intermediate redshifts, cz=about 10,000 to 35,000 km/s, by applying the CO-line Tully-Fisher relation to our 12CO (J=1-0)-line observations using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, and near-IR (NIR) photometry in the J and H bands using the 1.88-m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. By averaging the Hubble ratios from J-band result, we obtain a Hubble constant of H_0 = 60 (+/- 10) km/s/Mpc. We argue that the CO line-NIR TFR can be a complimentary method to the other methods for measuring distances of galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts., Comment: PASJ in press

We present the B-band Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) of 60 late-type galaxies with redshifts 0.1-1. The galaxies were selected from the FORS Deep Field with a limiting magnitude of R=23. Spatially resolved rotation curves were derived from spectra obtained with FORS2 at the VLT. High-mass galaxies with v_max>=150 km/s show little evolution, whereas the least massive systems in our sample are brighter by about 1-2 mag compared to their local counterparts. For the entire distant sample, the TFR slope is flatter than for local field galaxies (-5.77+-0.45 versus -7.92+-0.18). Thus, we find evidence for evolution of the slope of the TFR with redshift on the 3-sigma level. This is still true when we subdivide the sample into three redshift bins. We speculate that the flatter tilt of our sample is caused by the evolution of luminosities and an additional population of blue galaxies at z>=0.2. The mass dependence of the TFR evolution also leads to variations for different galaxy types in magnitude-limited samples, suggesting that selection effects can account for the discrepant results of previous TFR studies on the luminosity evolution of late-type galaxies., ApJL accepted version, comments welcome!

We have used a suite of simplified spectrophotometric spiral galaxy evolution models to argue that there are substantial variations in stellar mass-to-light ratios (M/Ls) within and among galaxies, amounting to factors of between 3 and 7 in the optical, and factors of 2 in the near-infrared. Under the assumption of a universal spiral galaxy IMF, our models show a strong and robust correlation between stellar M/L and the optical colors of the integrated stellar populations. Using observed maximum disk M/Ls we conclude that a Salpeter Initial Mass Function (IMF) has too many low-mass stars per unit luminosity, but that an IMF similar to the Salpeter IMF at the high-mass end with less low-mass stars (giving stellar M/Ls 30% or more lower than the Salpeter value) is consistent with the maximum disk constraints. We apply the model trends in stellar M/L with color to the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation. We find that the stellar mass TF relation is relatively steep and has modest scatter, and is independent of the passband and color used to derive the stellar masses. The difference in slope between the optical (especially blue) and near-infrared TF relations is due to the combined effects of dust attenuation and stellar M/L variations with galaxy mass. We find that the baryonic TF relation has a slope of 3.5 (with random and systematic errors of +/- 0.2 each). Since we have normalized the stellar M/L to be as high as can possibly be allowed by maximum disk constraints, the slope of the baryonic TF relation will be somewhat shallower than 3.5 if all disks are substantially sub-maximal. We discuss the origin of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation using the $N$-body/SPH method, which includes cooling, star formation and stellar feedback of energy, mass and metals. We consider initially rotating overdense spheres, and trace formation processes of disk galaxies from $z=25$ to $z=0$ in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology. To clarify the origin of the TF relation, we simulate formation of 14 galaxies with different masses and spin parameters, and compute observable values, such as the total magnitude and the line-width. We find that the simulated galaxies reproduce the slope and scatter of the TF relation: the slope is originated in the difference of total galactic masses, and the scatter is produced by the difference of initial spin parameters. As well as the TF relation, observed features of spiral galaxies, such as the exponential light-profile and the flat rotation curve, are reproduced in our simulations, which were assumed {\it a priori} in past semi-analytical approaches., Comment: 11 pages, including 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

The frequency shift of spectral lines is most often explained by the Doppler Effect in terms of relative motion, whereas the Doppler broadening of a particular line mainly depends on the absolute temperature. The Wolf effect on the other hand deals with the correlation induced spectral change and explains both the broadening and shift of the spectral lines. In this framework a relation between the width of the spectral line is related to the redshift z for the line and hence with the distance. For smaller values of z a relation similar to the Tully-Fisher relation can be obtained and for larger values of z a more general relation can be constructed. The derivation of this kind of relation based on dynamic multiple scattering theory may play a significant role in explaining the overall spectra of quasi stellar objects. Using 3D hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation with supernova feedback and a multiphase medium, we derive theoretical relations analogous to the observed Tully-Fisher (TF) relations in various photometric bands. This paper examines the influence of self-regulation mechanisms including supernova feedback on galaxy luminosities and the TF relation in three cosmological scenarios (CDM, \Lambda CDM and BSI (broken scale invariance)). The galaxy catalogs derived from our hydrodynamical simulations lead to an acceptably small scatter in the theoretical TF relation amounting to \Delta M =0.2-0.4 in the I band, and increasing by 0.1 magnitude from the I-band to the B-band. Our results give strong evidence that the tightness of the TF relation cannot be attributed to supernova feedback alone. However, although eliminating supernova feedback hardly affects the scatter, it does influence the slope of the TF relation quite sensitively. With supernova feedback, L \propto V_c^{3-3.5} (depending on the strength of supernova feedback). Without it, L \propto V_c^{2} as predicted by the virial theorem with constant M/L. The luminosity functions in the B and K bands are quite sensitive to supernova feedback at the faint end studied here. We find that the faint end of the B-band luminosity function (-18 \leq M_B \leq -15) has a slope that is steeper than the Stromlo-APM estimate, but in rough agreement with the recent ESO Slice Project estimates., Comment: AAS Latex preprint. 20 pages with figures included. A tangential distortion of background source galaxies around foreground lens galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field is detected at the 99.3% confidence level. An important element of our analysis is the use of photometric redshifts to determine distances of lens and source galaxies and rest-frame B-band luminosities of the lens galaxies. The lens galaxy halos obey a Tully-Fisher relation between halo circular velocity and luminosity; the typical lens galaxy, at a redshift z = 0.6, has a circular velocity of 210 +/-40 km/s at M_B = -18.5, if q_0 = 0.5. Control tests, in which lens and source positions and source ellipticities are randomized, confirm the significance level of the detection quoted above. Furthermore, a marginal signal is also detected from an independent, fainter sample of source galaxies without photometric redshifts. Potential systematic effects, such as contamination by aligned satellite galaxies, the distortion of source shapes by the light of the foreground galaxies, PSF anisotropies, and contributions from mass distributed on the scale of galaxy groups are shown to be negligible. A comparison of our result with the local Tully-Fisher relation indicates that intermediate-redshift galaxies are fainter than local spirals by 1.0 +/- 0.6 B mag at a fixed circular velocity. This is consistent with some spectroscopic studies of the rotation curves of intermediate-redshift galaxies. A new technique for calibrating Tully-Fisher like relations by using field galaxies is proposed. Based on a null-correlation approach (NCA), the technique is insensitive to the presence of selection effects on apparent magnitude $m$ and on log line-width distance indicator $p$. This interesting property is used for discarding near by galaxies of the observed sample. It is shown that such a subsampling allows in effect to attenuate biases on calibration parameters created by the presence of radial peculiar velocities., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. Infrared I band photometry and velocity widths for galaxies in 24 clusters, with radial velocities between 1,000 and 10,000 \kms, are used to construct a template Tully--Fisher (TF) relation. The sources of scatter in the TF diagram are analyzed in detail; it is shown that the common practice of referring to a single figure of TF scatter is incorrect and can lead to erroneous bias corrections. Biases resulting from sample incompleteness, catalog inaccuracies, cluster size and other sources, as well as dependences of TF parameters on morphological type and local environment, are discussed and appropriate corrections are obtained. A template TF relation is constructed by combining the data from the 24 clusters, and kinematic cluster offsets from a putative reference frame which well approximates null velocity with respect to the cosmic microwave background, are obtained., Comment: 39 pages, 5 tables, 24 figures, uses AAS LaTex; to appear in AJ Jan 97 Figures 17 and 18 are not included here. We report on the first results of a long-term project to derive distances of galaxies at cosmological distances by applying the CO-line width-luminosity relation. We have obtained deep CO-line observations of galaxies at redshifts up to 29,000 km/s using the Nobeyama 45-m mm-wave Telescope, and some supplementary data were obtained by using the IRAM 30-m telescope. We have detected the CO line emission for several galaxies, and used their CO line widths to estimate the absolute luminosities using the line-width-luminosity relation. In order to obtain photometric data and inclination correction, we also performed optical imaging observations of the CO-detected galaxies using the CFHT 3.6-m telescope at high resolution. The radio and optical data have been combined to derive the distance moduli and distances of the galaxies, and Hubble ratios were estimated for these galaxies. We propose that the CO line width-luminosity relation can be a powerful method to derive distances of galaxies to redfhift of z = 0.1 and to derive the Hubble ratio in a significant volume of the universe. We have undertaken a pilot project to measure the rotation velocities of spiral galaxies in the redshift range 0.18 < z < 0.4 using high dispersion long slit spectroscopy obtained with the Palomar 5m telescope. One field galaxy and three cluster objects known to have strong emission lines were observed over wavelength ranges covering the redshifted lines of [OII], CaII K, H beta, and [OIII]. Two of the objects show extended line emission that allows the tracing of the rotation curve in one or more lines. A line width similar to that obtained with single dish telescopes for the 21-cm HI line observed in lower redshift galaxies can be derived from the observed H beta, [OII], and [OIII] emission by measuring a characteristic width from the velocity histogram. These moderately distant galaxies have much stronger emission lines than typical low-redshift spirals but they appear to be kinematically similar. Application of the Tully-Fisher relation suggests that the two galaxies with rotation curves are intrinsically brighter at R-band than nearby galaxies., Text is 15 pages (18 with figures). Observational parameters which can be used for redshift-independent distance determination using the Tully-Fisher (TF) technique are given for 782 spiral galaxies in the fields of 24 clusters or groups. I band photometry for the full sample was either obtained by us or compiled from published literature. Rotational velocities are derived either from 21 cm spectra or optical emission line long--slit spectra, and converted to a homogeneous scale. In addition to presenting the data, a discussion of the various sources of error on TF parameters is introduced, and the criteria for the assignment of membership to each cluster are given. We present a method for deriving a smoothed estimate of the peculiar velocity field of a set of galaxies with measured circular velocities $\eta\equiv {\rm log} \Delta v$ and apparent magnitudes $m$. The method is based on minimizing the scatter of a linear inverse Tully-Fisher relation $\eta= \eta(M)$ where the absolute magnitude of each galaxy is inferred from its redshift $z$, corrected by a peculiar velocity field, $M \propto m - 5\log(z-u)$. We describe the radial peculiar velocity field $u({\bf z})$ in terms of a set of orthogonal functions which can be derived from any convenient basis set; as an example we take them to be linear combinations of low order spherical harmonic and spherical Bessel functions. The model parameters are then found by maximizing the likelihood function for measuring a set of observed $\eta$. The predicted peculiar velocities are free of Malmquist bias in the absence of multi-streaming, provided no selection criteria are imposed on the measurement of circular velocities. This procedure can be considered as a generalized smoothing algorithm of the peculiar velocity field, and is particularly useful for comparison to the smoothed gravity field derived from full-sky galaxy redshift catalogs such as the IRAS surveys. We demonstrate the technique using a catalog of ``galaxies" derived from an N-body simulation.
