Progress in the application of machine learning techniques to the prediction of solid-state and molecular materials properties has been greatly facilitated by the development state-of-the-art feature representations and novel deep learning architectures. A large class of atomic structure representations based on expansions of smoothed atomic densities have been shown to correspond to specific choices of basis sets in an abstract many-body Hilbert space. Concurrently, tensor network structures, conventionally the purview of quantum many-body physics and quantum information, have been successfully applied in supervised and unsupervised learning tasks in computer vision and natural language processing. In this work, we argue that architectures based on tensor networks are well-suited to machine learning on Hilbert-space representations of atomic structures. This is demonstrated on supervised learning tasks involving widely available datasets of density functional theory calculations of metal and semiconductor alloys. In particular, we show that certain standard tensor network topologies exhibit strong generalizability even on small training datasets while being parametrically efficient. We further relate this generalizability to the presence of complex entanglement in the trained tensor networks. We present a novel method to approximate optimal feedback laws for nonlinear optimal control based on low-rank tensor train (TT) decompositions. The approach is based on the Dirac-Frenkel variational principle with the modification that the optimisation uses an empirical risk. Compared to current state-of-the-art TT methods, our approach exhibits a greatly reduced computational burden while achieving comparable results. A rigorous description of the numerical scheme and demonstrations of its performance are provided.

The right to be forgotten, also known as the right to erasure, is the right of individuals to have their data erased from an entity storing it. The status of this long held notion was legally solidified recently by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union. Consequently, there is a need for mechanisms whereby users can verify if service providers comply with their deletion requests. In this work, we take the first step in proposing a formal framework to study the design of such verification mechanisms for data deletion requests -- also known as machine unlearning -- in the context of systems that provide machine learning as a service (MLaaS). Our framework allows the rigorous quantification of any verification mechanism based on standard hypothesis testing. Furthermore, we propose a novel backdoor-based verification mechanism and demonstrate its effectiveness in certifying data deletion with high confidence, thus providing a basis for quantitatively inferring machine unlearning. We evaluate our approach over a range of network architectures such as multi-layer perceptrons (MLP), convolutional neural networks (CNN), residual networks (ResNet), and long short-term memory (LSTM), as well as over 5 different datasets. We demonstrate that our approach has minimal effect on the ML service's accuracy but provides high confidence verification of unlearning. Our proposed mechanism works even if only a handful of users employ our system to ascertain compliance with data deletion requests. In particular, with just 5% of users participating, modifying half their data with a backdoor, and with merely 30 test queries, our verification mechanism has both false positive and false negative ratios below $10^{-3}$. Paper ballot voting with its fully-reviewable paper-trail is usually considered as more secure than their e-voting counterparts, given the large number of recent incidents. In this work, we explore the security of paper voting and show that paper voting, as it is implemented today, is surprisingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks. In particular, the aggregation methods of preliminary voting results of various countries rely on insecure communication channels like telephone, fax or non-secure e-mail. Furthermore, regulations typically do not mandate the use of secure channels for the transmission of preliminary results. We illustrate that preliminary results, despite their temporary nature, may have a severe impact on real-world decisions during the 3 to 30 days window until the final results are declared. An attacker exploiting this discrepancy can, e.g., benefit from stock market manipulation or call into question the legitimacy of the elections. This work investigates the cyber-risks in paper voting in a systematic manner by reviewing procedures in several countries (Estonia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America) and through a comprehensive case-study of Switzerland. We examine the transmission systems currently in use through inquires from election officials. Moreover, we illustrate the feasibility of attacks by analyzing the frequent historical discrepancies between preliminary and final results. Considering our results and recent reports about easily modifiable preliminary results in Germany and the Netherlands, we conjecture similar weaknesses in other countries as well.
