We study the time-dependent quantum Fisher information (QFI) in an open quantum system satisfying the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation. We also study the dynamics of the system from an effective non-Hermitian dynamics standpoint and use it to understand the scaling of the QFI when multiple probes are used. A focus of our work is how the QFI is maximized at certain times suggesting that the best precision in parameter estimation can be achieved by focusing on these times. The propagation of errors analysis allows us to confirm and better understand this idea. We also propose a parameter estimation procedure involving relatively low resource consuming measurements followed by higher resource consuming measurements and demonstrate it in simulation., Comment: 11 pages,8 Figures

Quantum steering in a system consisting of a qubit coupled to a single-mode field is explored when classical-like measurements implemented by heterodyne detection schemes that collapse the state of the field on to a coherent state is considered. The quantum steering ellipsoid of the qubit is constructed to visualize the set of states on to which it can be steered using such measurements. In some cases, the steering set does not form an ellipsoid since only heterodyne detection is considered. Evolution of the steering ellipsoid corresponding to joint evolution of the qubit and field under the Jaynes-Cummins hamiltonian is also studied., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

We derive bounds on the entanglement of formation of states of a 4xN bipartite system using two entanglement monotones constructed from operational separability criteria. The bounds are used simultaneously as constraints on the entanglement of formation. One monotone is the negativity, which is based on the Peres positive-partial-transpose criterion. The evolution of two qubits coupled by a general nonlocal interaction is studied in two distinct regimes. In the first regime the purity of the individual qubits is interchanged through the entanglement shared by the two. We illustrate how this can be a mechanism for decoherence. In the second regime, the interaction entangles two initially pure qubits. The dynamical maps for the reduced unitary evolution of both initially simply separable and not-simply-separable states are found. The most general evolution of the density matrix of a quantum system with a finite-dimensional state space is by stochastic maps which take a density matrix linearly into the set of density matrices. These dynamical stochastic maps form a linear convex set that may be viewed as supermatrices. The property of hermiticity of density matrices renders an associated supermatrix hermitian and hence diagonalizable. The positivity of the density matrix does not make the associated supermatrix positive though. If the map itself is positive, it is called completely positive and they have a simple parameterization. This is extended to all positive (not completely positive) maps. A general dynamical map that does not preserve the norm of the density matrices it acts on can be thought of as the contraction of a norm-preserving map of an extended system.
