Quantum sensing of low-frequency magnetic fields using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center ensembles has been demonstrated in multiple experiments with sensitivities as low as $\sim$1 pT/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. To date, however, demonstrations of high-frequency magnetometry in the GHz regime with NV diamond are orders of magnitude less sensitive, above the nT/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ level. Here we adapt for microwave frequencies techniques that have enabled high-performance, low-frequency quantum sensors. Using a custom-grown NV-enriched diamond combined with a noise cancellation scheme designed for high-frequency sensing, we demonstrate a Rabi-sequence-based magnetometer able to detect microwave fields near 2.87 GHz with a record sensitivity of 3.4 pT/$\sqrt{\textrm{Hz}}$. We demonstrate both amplitude and phase sensing and project tunability over a 300 MHz frequency range. Ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are a leading platform for practical quantum sensors. Reproducible and scalable fabrication of NV-ensembles with desired properties is crucial. This work addresses these challenges by developing a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis process to produce diamond material at scale with improved NV-ensemble properties for a target NV density. The material reported in this work enables immediate sensitivity improvements for current devices. In addition, techniques established in this work for material and sensor characterization at different stages of the CVD synthesis process provide metrics for future efforts targeting other NV densities or sample geometries., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

Robust, high-fidelity readout is central to quantum device performance. Overcoming poor readout is an increasingly urgent challenge for devices based on solid-state spin defects, particularly given their rapid adoption in quantum sensing, quantum information, and tests of fundamental physics. Spin defects in solids combine the repeatability and precision available to atomic and cryogenic systems with substantial advantages in compactness and range of operating conditions. However, in spite of experimental progress in specific systems, solid-state spin sensors still lack a universal, high-fidelity readout technique. Here we demonstrate high-fidelity, room-temperature readout of an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers via strong coupling to a dielectric microwave cavity, building on similar techniques commonly applied in cryogenic circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics. This strong collective interaction allows the spin ensemble's microwave transition to be probed directly, thereby overcoming the optical photon shot noise limitations of conventional fluorescence readout. Applying this technique to magnetometry, we show magnetic sensitivity approaching the Johnson-Nyquist noise limit of the system. This readout technique is viable for the many paramagnetic spin systems that exhibit resonances in the microwave domain. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of solid-state spin decoherence in an electronic spin bath, focusing specifically on ensembles of nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond and the associated substitutional nitrogen spin bath. We perform measurements of NV spin free induction decay times $T_2^*$ and spin-echo coherence times $T_2$ in 25 diamond samples with nitrogen concentrations [N] ranging from 0.01 to 300\,ppm. We introduce a microscopic model and perform numerical simulations to quantitatively explain the degradation of both $T_2^*$ and $T_2$ over four orders of magnitude in [N]. Our results resolve a long-standing discrepancy observed in NV $T_2$ experiments, enabling us to describe NV ensemble spin coherence decay shapes as emerging consistently from the contribution of many individual NV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + supplement
