We have calculated the energy spectra for almost all the filling fractions in the Jain series low energy fundamental mode as well as higher energy modes using composite fermion theory. The nature of the low energy mode and higher energy mode is nearly identical to the roton mode. We observe signatures of radial and angular roton excitations around a droplet crystallization transition in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. In situ measurements are used to characterize the density fluctuations near this transition. The static structure factor is extracted and used to identify the radial and angular roton excitations by their characteristic symmetries. These fluctuations peak as a function of interaction strength indicating the crystallization transition of the system. We compare our observations to a theoretically calculated excitation spectrum allowing us to connect the crystallization mechanism with the softening of the angular roton modes., Comment: 10 pages, 4 + 4 figures

We present the collective excitation spectrum analysis of binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings in a quasi-two-dimensional system. In particular, we investigate the role of SO and Rabi coupling strengths in determining the dynamical stability of the coupled BECs using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory. Using the eigenergy of BdG spectrum, we confirm the existence of phonon, roton, and maxon modes with weak repulsive intra- and inter-species contact interactions. The depth of the minimum corresponding to the roton mode depends strongly on the coupling strength. We find that the increase of the SO coupling leads to instability, while the increase in the Rabi coupling stabilizes the system. Also the eigenvectors of BdG spectrum indicates the presence of density like mode in the stable regime and spin like modes in unstable regimes. A phase diagram demonstrating the stability regime in the plane of SO and Rabi coupling strengths is obtained. We investigate the dynamics of a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atomic gases with a soft-core shape long-range interaction, which is induced by laser dressing the atoms to a highly excited Rydberg state. For a homogeneous condensate, the long-range interaction drastically alters the dispersion relation of the excitation, supporting both roton and maxon modes. Rotons are typically responsible for the creation of supersolids, while maxons are normally dynamically unstable in BECs with dipolar interactions. We show that maxon modes in the Rydberg-dressed condensate, on the contrary, are dynamically stable. We find that the maxon modes can be excited through an interaction quench, i.e. turning on the soft-core interaction instantaneously. The emergence of the maxon modes is accompanied by oscillations at high frequencies in the quantum depletion, while rotons lead to much slower oscillations. The dynamically stable excitation of the roton and maxon modes leads to persistent oscillations in the quantum depletion. Through a self-consistent Bogoliubov approach, we identify the dependence of the maxon mode on the soft-core interaction. Our study shows that maxon and roton modes can be excited dynamically and simultaneously by quenching Rydberg-dressed long-range interactions. Using the logarithmic superfluid model of physical vacuum, one can formulate a quantum theory, which successfully recovers Einstein's theory of relativity in low-momenta limit, but otherwise has different foundations and predictions. We present an analytical example of the dispersion relation and argue that it should have a Landau "roton" form which ensures the suppression of dissipative fluctuations. Ultracold dipolar droplets have been realized in a series of ground-breaking experiments, where the stability of the droplet state is attributed to beyond-mean-field effects in the form of the celebrated Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction. We scrutinize the dipolar droplet states in a one-dimensional context using a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, and identify experimentally viable parameters for accessing our findings for future experiments. In particular we identify regimes of stability in the restricted geometry, finding multiple roton instabilities as well as regions supporting quasi-one-dimensional droplet states. By applying an interaction quench to the droplet, a modulational instability is induced and multiple droplets are produced, along with bright solitons and atomic radiation. We develop a variational theory for a dipolar condensate in an elongated (cigar shaped) confinement potential. Our formulation provides an effective one-dimensional extended meanfield theory for the ground state and its collective excitations. We apply our theory to investigate the properties of rotons in the system comparing the variational treatment to a full numerical solution. We study by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo simulations the ground state phase diagram of a system of dipolar bosons with aligned dipole moments, and with the inclusion of a two-body repulsive potential of varying range. The system is shown to display a supersolid phase in a relatively broad region of the phase diagram, featuring different crystalline patterns depending on the density and on the range of the repulsive part of the interaction (scattering length). The supersolid phase is sandwiched between a classical crystal of parallel filaments and a homogeneous superfluid phase. We show that a "roton" minimum appears in the elementary excitation spectrum of the superfluid as the system approaches crystallization., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Atoms excited into high-lying Rydberg states and under strong dipole-dipole interactions exhibit phenomena associated with highly correlated and complex systems. We perform first principles numerical simulations on the dynamics of such systems. The emergence of a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum, as expected in strongly correlated gases and accurately described by Feynman's theory of liquid helium, is shown to significantly inhibit particle transport, with a strong suppression of the diffusion coefficient, due to the emerging spatial order. We also demonstrate how the ability to temporally tune the interaction strength among Rydberg atoms can be used in order to overcome the effects of disorder induced heating, allowing the study of unprecedented highly coupled regimes.

Frustrated magnetic compounds, in particular low-dimensional, are topical research due to persistent uncover of novel nontrivial quantum states and potential applications. The problem of this field is that many important results are scattered over the localized parameter ranges, while areas in between still contain hidden interesting effects. We consider $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice and use the spherically symmetric self-consistent approach for spin-spin Green's functions in "quasielastic" approximation. We have found a new local order in spin liquids: antiferromagnetic isotropical helices. On the structure factor we see circular concentric dispersionless structures, while on any radial direction the excitation spectrum has "roton" minima. That implies nontrivial magnetic excitations and consequences in magnetic susceptibility and thermodynamics. On the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ exchange parameters globe we discover a crossover between antiferromagnetic-like local order and ferromagnetic-like; we find stripe-like order in the middle. The anomalous thermodynamic properties of the paradigmatic frustrated spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLH) has remained an open topic of research over decades, both experimentally and theoretically. Here we further the theoretical understanding based on the recently developed, powerful exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) method on cylinders and stripes in a quasi one-dimensional (1D) setup, as well as a tensor product operator approach directly in 2D. The observed thermal properties of the TLH are in excellent agreement with two recent experimental measurements on the virtually ideal TLH material Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$. Remarkably, our numerical simulations reveal two crossover temperature scales, at $T_l/J \sim 0.20$ and $T_h/J\sim 0.55$, with $J$ the Heisenberg exchange coupling, which are also confirmed by a more careful inspection of the experimental data. We propose that in the intermediate regime between the low-temperature scale $T_l$ and the higher one $T_h$, the gapped "roton-like" excitations are activated with a strong chiral component and a large contribution to thermal entropies, which suppress the incipient 120$^\circ$ order that emerges for temperatures below $T_l$., Comment: 4+15 pages, 4 + 16 figures

We consider a two-component Bose-condensed mixture characterized by positive s-wave scattering lengths. We assume equal densities and intra-species interactions. By doing the Bogoliubov transformation of an effective Hamiltonian we obtain the lower energy magnon dispersion incorporating the superfluid entrainment between the components. We argue that p-wave pairing of distinct bosons should be accompanied by self-localization of magnons and formation of a magnetoroton. We investigate the behavior of the collective excitations of adsorbed $^4$He in an ordered hexagonal mesopore, examining the crossover from a thin film to a confined fluid. Here we present the inelastic scattering results as a function of filling at constant temperature. We find a monotonic transition of the maxon excitation as a function of filling. This has been interpreted as corresponding to an increasing density of the adsorbed helium, which approaches the bulk value as filling increases. The roton minimum exhibits a more complicated behavior that does not monotonically approach bulk values as filling increases. The full pore scattering resembles the bulk liquid accompanied by a layer mode. The maxon and roton scattering, taken together, at intermediate fillings does not correspond to a single bulk liquid dispersion at negative, low, or high pressure., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We study quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, in which the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum displays, at sufficiently large gas density, a deep roton minimum due to the spatially anisotropic behavior of the dipolar two-body potential. A rapid quench, performed on the speed of sound of excitations propagating on the condensate background, leads to the dynamical Casimir effect, which can be characterized by measuring the density-density correlation function. It is shown, for both zero and finite initial temperatures, that the continuous-variable bipartite quantum state of the created quasiparticle pairs with opposite momenta, resulting from the quench, displays an enhanced potential for the presence of entanglement (represented by nonseparable and steerable quasiparticle states), when compared to a gas with solely repulsive contact interactions. We have carried out a microscopic study of the dynamic structure factor of liquid $^4$He across the normal-superfluid transition temperature using the path integral Monte Carlo method. The ill-posed problem of the inverse Laplace transform, from the imaginary-time intermediate scattering function to the dynamic response, is tackled by stochastic optimization. Our results show a quasi-particle peak and a small and broad multiphonon contribution. In spite of the lack of strength in the collective peaks, we clearly identify the rapid dropping of the roton peak amplitude when crossing the transition temperature $T_\lambda$. Other properties such as the static structure factor, static response, and one-phonon contribution to the response are also calculated at different temperatures. The changes of the phonon-roton spectrum with the temperature are also studied. An overall agreement with available experimental data is achieved., Comment: 10 pages

We consider the problem of spin-triplet p-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection $m_s=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to presence of a parabolic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that depending on the distance from the center of a trap at least two superfluid states will have the lowest energy. The essential point of Bohr-Mottelson theory is to assume a irrotational flow. As was already suggested by Marumori and Watanabe, the internal rotational motion, i.e., the vortex motion, however, may exist also in nuclei. So, we have a necessity of taking the vortex motion into consideration. In a classical fluid dynamics, there are various ways to treat the internal rotational velocity. The Clebsch representation, v(x) = -\nabla \phi(x) + \lambda(x) \nabla \psi(x) (\phi ; velocity potential, \lambda and \psi: Clebsch parameters) is very powerful and has an advantage deriving equations of fluid motion from a Lagransian. Making the best use of the advantage, Kronig-Thellung, Ziman and Ito obtained a Hamiltonian including the internal rotational motion, the vortex motion, through the term \lambda(x) \nabla \psi(x). Going to quantum fluid dynamics, Ziman and Thellung finally derived a roton spectrum of liquid Helium II postulated by Landau. Is it possible to apply such the manner to a description of the collective vortex motion in nuclei? The description of such a collective motion has never been treated in the Bohr-Mottelson model (BMM) for a long time. Superfluidity is an emergent quantum phenomenon which arises due to strong interactions between elementary excitations in liquid helium. These excitations have been probed with great success using techniques such as neutron and light scattering. However measurements to-date have been limited, quite generally, to average properties of bulk superfluid or the driven response far out of thermal equilibrium. Here, we use cavity optomechanics to probe the thermodynamics of superfluid excitations in real-time. Furthermore, strong light-matter interactions allow both laser cooling and amplification of the thermal motion. This provides a new tool to understand and control the microscopic behaviour of superfluids, including phonon-phonon interactions, quantised vortices and two-dimensional quantum phenomena such as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The third sound modes studied here also offer a pathway towards quantum optomechanics with thin superfluid films, including femtogram effective masses, high mechanical quality factors, strong phonon-phonon and phonon-vortex interactions, and self-assembly into complex geometries with sub-nanometre feature size., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Quantum Chromodynamics is thought to be the relativistic quantum field theory that describes the strong interaction of the Standard Model. This interaction produces mesons but it is also able to generate quark-quark (diquark) correlations inside baryons. In this work, we employ a continuum approach to QCD based on Dyson-Schwinger equations to calculate the electromagnetic form factors of the proton and analyze in a deeper way the consequences of having strong diquark correlations. Comparison with the experimental data reveals that the presence of strong diquark correlations within the proton is sufficient to understand empirical extractions of the flavour-separated form factors. The explained reduction of the ratios $F_{1}^{d}/F_{1}^{u}$ and $F_{2}^{d}/F_{2}^{u}$ at high $Q^{2}$ in the quark-diquark picture are responsible of the precocious scaling of the $F_{2}^{p}/F_{1}^{p}$ observed experimentally., Comment: To be published in the proceedings of 21st International Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, Chicago, IL, 18-22 May 2015

In a recent experiment by Wu {\textit et al.} (arXiv:1511.08170), a Raman-assisted two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling has been realized for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice potential. In light of this exciting progress, we study in detail key properties of the system. As the Raman lasers inevitably couple atoms to high-lying bands, the behaviors of the system in both the single- and many-particle sectors are significantly affected. In particular, the high-band effects enhance the plane-wave phase and lead to the emergence of "roton" gaps at low Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we identify high-band-induced topological phase boundaries in both the single-particle and the quasi-particle spectra. We then derive an effective two-band model, which captures the high-band physics in the experimentally relevant regime. Our results not only offer valuable insights into the novel two-dimensional lattice spin-orbit coupling, but also provide a systematic formalism to model high-band effects in lattice systems with Raman-assisted spin-orbit couplings., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Interacting bosons with two "spin'' states in a lattice show novel superfluid-insulator phase transitions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Depending on the parameter regime, bosons in the superfluid phase can condense to either a zero momentum state or to one or multiple states with finite momentum, leading to an unconventional superfluid phase. We study the response of such a system to modulation of the optical lattice potential. We show that the change in momentum distribution after lattice modulation shows distinct patterns in the Mott and the superfluid phase and these patterns can be used to detect these phases and the quantum phase transition between them. Further, the momentum resolved optical modulation spectroscopy can identify both the gapless (Goldstone) gapped amplitude (Higgs) mode of the superfluid phase and clearly distinguish between the superfluid phases with a zero momentum condensate and a twisted superfluid phase by looking at the location of these modes in the Brillouin zone. We compute the contribution of phonons to the thermal conductivity in the core of superfluid neutron stars. We use effective field theory techniques to extract the phonon scattering rates, written as a function of the equation of state of the system. We also calculate the phonon dispersion law beyond linear order, which depends on the gap of superfluid neutron matter. With all these ingredients, we solve the Boltzmann equation numerically using a variational approach. We find that the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ is dominated by combined small and large angle binary collisions. As in the color-flavor-locked superfluid, we find that our result can be well approximated by $\kappa \propto 1/ \Delta^6$, where $\Delta$ is the neutron gap, the constant of proportionality depending on the density. In the probe limit, we numerically construct a holographic p-wave superfluid model in the 4D and 5D AdS black holes coupled to a Maxwell-complex vector field. We find that, for the condensate with the fixed superfluid velocity, the results are similar to the s-wave cases in both 4D and 5D spacetimes. In particular, "The Cave of Winds" and the phase transition always being the second order take place in the 5D case. Moreover, we find the second-first order translating point $\frac{S_y}{\mu}$ increases with the mass squared. Furthermore, for the supercurrent with the fixed temperature, the results agree with the GL prediction near the critical temperature. In addition, this complex vector superfluid model is still a generalization of the SU(2) superfluid model, and also provides a holographic realization of the $He_3$ superfluid system., Comment: Typos corrected;Published in Phys. We present the first direct-numerical-simulation study of the statistical properties of two-dimensional superfluid turbulence in the Hall-Vinen-Bekharevich-Khalatnikov two-fluid model. We show that both normal-fluid and superfluid energy spectra can exhibit two power-law regimes, the first associated with an inverse cascade of energy and the second with the forward cascade of enstrophy. We quantify the mutual-friction-induced alignment of normal and superfluid velocities by obtaining probability distribution functions of the angle between them and the ratio of their moduli. Our study leads to specific suggestions for experiments.

He-4 is known to become superfluid at very low temperatures. This effect is now generally accepted to be connected with BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensation). The dispersion relation of pressure waves in superfluid He-4 has been determined at 1.1 {\deg}K by Yarnell et al., and exhibits a non monotonic behavior - with a maximum and a minimum - usually explained in terms of excitations called rotons, introduced by Landau. In the present work an attempt is made to describe the phenomenon within the bohmian interpretation of QM. To this end, the effects of the intermolecular potential, taken to be essentially of the Lennard-Jones type modified to account for molecule finiteness, are included as a Vlasov-type self-consistent field. Excitation spectra of square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets in magnetic fields are investigated by the spin-wave theory. It is pointed out that a rotonlike structure appears in a narrow range of magnetic fields, as a result of strong nonlinear effects. It is shown that the energy gap and the mass of the "roton" are quite sensitive to the magnetic field: the roton gap softens rapidly and eventually closes as a precursor of a quantum phase transition. The possibility of the experimental observation of the roton and a new ground state after its softening are discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present a comprehensive statistical study of free decay of the quantized vortex tangle in superfluid $^4$He at low and ultra-low temperatures, $0\leqslant T \leqslant 1.1\,$K. Using high resolution vortex filament simulations with full Biot-Savart vortex dynamics, we show that for ultra-low temperatures $T\lesssim 0.5 \,$K, when the mutual friction parameters $\alpha\simeq \alpha' < 10^{-5}$, the vortex reconnections excite Kelvin waves with wave lengths $\lambda$ of the order of the inter-vortex distance $\ell$. These excitations cascade down to the resolution scale $\Delta\xi$ which in our simulations is of the order $\Delta \xi\sim \ell/100$. At this scale the Kelvin waves are numerically damped by a line-smoothing procedure, that is supposed to mimic the dissipation of Kelvin waves by phonon and roton emission at the scale of the vortex core. We show that the Kelvin waves cascade is statistically important: the shortest available Kelvin waves at the end of the cascade determine the mean vortex line curvature $S$, giving $S \gtrsim 30 /\ell$ and play major role in the tangle decay at ultra-low temperatures below $0.6\,$K. The found dependence of $\ell S$ on the resolution scale $\Delta \xi$ agrees with the L'vov-Nazarenko energy spectrum of weakly-interacting Kelvin waves, $E\Sb{LN}\propto k^{-5/3}$ rather than the spectrum $E\Sb{LN}\propto k^{-1}$, suggested by Vinen for turbulence of Kelvin waves with large amplitudes. A microwave electromagnetic field can excite a coherent roton aggregate in liquid helium around a dielectric resonator. We show that multiple coherent aggregates are excited simultaneously and predict a Josephson effect between them. The superfluid velocity acts as a "voltage across the weak link" in superconducting Josephson junctions. A comparison with existing experimental data is made., Comment: 2 pages

This article discusses the behavior of submonolayer quantum films (He and H2) on graphene and newly discovered surfaces that are derived from graphene. Among these substrates are graphane (abbreviated GH), which has an H atom bonded to each C atom, and fluorographene (GF). For the graphite case, extensive experimental and theoretical investigations have revealed that the phase diagrams of the bose gases 4He and para-H2 are qualitatively similar, differing primarily in a higher characteristic temperature scale for H2 than for He. The phase behaviors of these films on one side of pristine graphene, or both sides of free-standing graphene, are expected to be similar to those on graphite. We point out the possibility of novel phenomena in adsorption on graphene related to the large flexibility of the graphene sheet, to the non--negligible interaction between atoms adsorbed on opposite sides of the sheet and to the perturbation effect of the adsorbed layer on the Dirac electrons. In contrast, the behaviors predicted on GF and GH surfaces are very different from those on graphite, a result of the different corrugation, i.e., the lateral variation of the potential experienced by these gases. As a result of this novel geometry and potential, distinct properties are observed. For example, the 4He film's ground-state on graphite is a two-dimensional (2D) crystal commensurate with the substrate; on GF and GH, instead, it is predicted to be an anisotropic superfluid. On GF the anisotropy is so extreme that the roton excitations are very anisotropic, as if the bosons are moving in a multiconnected space along the bonds of a honeycomb lattice. Such a novel phase has not been predicted or observed previously on any substrate. We present a full set of wave equations describing a dense Bose fluid, applicable both to non- ideal gases and to liquid 4He. The phonon spectrum in liquid 4He is found and the fraction of condensed particles is calculated at zero temperature for a wide range of densities. The theory also yields the ground-state energy for the quantum liquid 4He in agreement to high accuracy with Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data at low pressure. We also present the derivation of a generalized Hartree-Fock equation describing roton clusters in low temperature liquid 4He, allowing us to confirm that, at low enough temperatures and for a wide range of pressures, the stable clusters consist of 13 bound atoms., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Observations of macroscopic quantum coherence in driven systems, e.g. polariton condensates, have strongly stimulated experimental as well as theoretical efforts during the last decade. We consider the quasi-particle excitations of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. By mapping these excitations onto radial and angular momentum we show that the roton modes are clearly revealed as discrete fingers in parameter space, whereas the other modes form a smooth surface. We examine the properties of the roton modes and characterize how they change with the dipole interaction strength. We investigate strong pairing fluctuations and effects of a harmonic trap in the superfluid phase of an ultracold Fermi gas. Including amplitude and phase fluctuations of the inhomogeneous superfluid order parameter $\Delta(r)$ in a trap within a combined $T$-matrix theory with the local density approximation, we examine local properties of single-particle excitations and a thermodynamic quantity in the BCS-BEC crossover region. Below the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, we show that inhomogeneous pairing fluctuations lead to a shell structure of the gas cloud in which the spatial region where the ordinary BCS-type superfluid density of states appears is surrounded by the region where the pseudogap associated with strong pairing fluctuations dominates single-particle excitations. The former spatial region enlarges to eventually cover the whole gas cloud far below $T_{\rm c}$. We also examine how this shell structure affects the photoemission spectrum, as well as the local pressure. Since a cold Fermi gas is always trapped in a harmonic potential, our results would be useful for the study of strong-coupling superfluid physics, including this realistic situation., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

We solve the problem of the transmission and reflection of phonons and rotons at the interface between superfluid helium and a solid, for all angles of incidence and in both directions. A consistent solution of the problem is presented which allows us to rigorously describe the simultaneous creation of phonons, $R^-$, and $R^+$ rotons in helium by either a phonon from the solid or a helium quasiparticle incident on the interface. The interaction of all $HeII$ quasiparticles with the interface, and their transmission, reflection and conversion into each other, is described in a unified way. The angles of propagation and the probabilities of creating quasiparticles are obtained for all cases. Andreev reflection of helium phonons and rotons is predicted. The energy flows through the interface due to phonons, $R^-$, and $R^+$ rotons are derived. The small contribution of the $R^-$ rotons is due to the small probability of an $R^-$ roton being created by a phonon in the solid, and vice versa. This explains the failure to directly create beams of $R^-$ rotons prior to the experiments of Tucker and Wyatt in 1999. New experiments for creating $R^-$ rotons, by beams of high-energy phonons (h-phonons), are suggested., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We propose a two-dimensional model for a multilayer stack of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates formed by a strong optical lattice. We derive effective intra- and interlayer dipole-dipole interaction potentials and provide simple analytical approximations for a given number of lattice sites at arbitrary polarization. We find that the interlayer dipole-dipole interaction changes the transverse aspect ratio of the ground state in the central layers depending on its polarization and the number of lattice sites. The changing aspect ratio should be observable in time of flight images. Furthermore, we show that the interlayer dipole-dipole interaction reduces the excitation energy of local perturbations, affecting the development of a roton minimum., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. We discuss fluctuations in a dilute two-dimensional Bose-condensed dipolar gas, which has a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum. We calculate the density-density correlation function, fluctuation corrections to the chemical potential, compressibility, and the normal (superfluid) fraction. It is shown that the presence of the roton strongly enhances fluctuations of the density, and we establish the validity criterion of the Bogoliubov approach. At T=0 the condensate depletion becomes significant if the roton minimum is sufficiently close to zero. At finite temperatures exceeding the roton energy, the effect of thermal fluctuations is stronger and it may lead to a large normal fraction of the gas and compressibility., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We predict the emergence of a roton minimum in the dispersion relation of elementary excitations in cold atomic gases in the presence of diffusive light. In large magneto-topical traps, multiple-scattering of light is responsible for the collective behavior of the system, which is associated to an effective Coulomb-like interaction between the atoms. In optically thick clouds, the re-scattered light undergoes diffusive propagation, which is responsible for a stochastic short-range force acting on the atoms. We show that the dynamical competition between these two forces results on a new polariton mode, which exhibits a roton minimum. Making use of Feynman's formula for the static structure factor, we show that the roton minimum is related to the appearance of long-range order in the system., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Mott insulator to superfluid quenches have been used by recent experiments to generate exotic superfluid phases. While the final Hamiltonian following the sudden quench is that of a superfluid, it is not a priori clear how close the final state of the system approaches the ground state of the superfluid Hamiltonian. To understand the nature of the final state we calculate the temporal evolution of the momentum distribution following a Mott insulator to superfluid quench. Using the numerical infinite time-evolving block decimation approach and the analytical rotor model approximation we establish that the one and two dimensional Mott insulators following the quench equilibriate to thermal states with spatially short-ranged coherence peaks in the final momentum distribution and therefore are not strict superfluids. However, in three dimensions we find a divergence in the momentum distribution indicating the emergence of true superfluid order., Comment: 4.2 pages, 3 Figures

In superfluid $^3$He turbulence is carried predominantly by the superfluid component. To explore the statistical properties of this quantum turbulence and its differences from the classical counterpart we adopt the time-honored approach of shell models. Using this approach we provide numerical simulations of a Sabra-shell model that allows us to uncover the nature of the energy spectrum in the relevant hydrodynamic regimes. These results are in qualitative agreement with analytical expressions for the superfluid turbulent energy spectra that were found using a differential approximation for the energy flux.

We consider effective interactions in a 2D hybrid polariton- electron system and calculate dispersion of elementary excitations accounting the spin degree of freedom of the particles. Due to the crucial role played by the exchange term in polariton- electron interactions the dispersions of this system become spin- dependent and show unusual behavior. The coupling of the excitations of the condensate with 2D plasmon can result in appearence of roton minimum in the dispersion and destruction of the condensate for close enough situated quantum wells with electrons and excitons., Comment: 8 pages, submitted to Phys. rev. We describe the first measurement on Andreev scattering of thermal excitations from a vortex configuration with known density, spatial extent, and orientations in 3He-B superfluid. The heat flow from a blackbody radiator in equilibrium rotation at constant angular velocity is measured with two quartz tuning fork oscillators. One oscillator creates a controllable density of excitations at 0.2Tc base temperature and the other records the thermal response. The results are compared to numerical calculations of ballistic propagation of thermal quasiparticles through a cluster of rectilinear vortices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study the behavior of two coupled purely dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, each located in a cylindrically symmetric pancake-shaped external confining potential, as the separation b between the traps along the tight confining direction is varied. The solutions of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which account for the full dynamics, show that the system behavior is modified by the presence of the second dipolar BEC. For sufficiently small b, the presence of the second dipolar BEC destabilizes the system dramatically. In this regime, the coupled system collapses through a mode that is notably different from the radial roton mode that induces the collapse of the uncoupled system. Finally, we comment on the shortcomings of an approach that neglects the dynamics in the z-direction, which is assumed to be a good approximation for highly pancake-shaped dipolar BECs in the literature., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

A theory of thermoelectric phenomena in superfluid $^4He$ is developed. It is found an estimation of the dipole moment of helium atom arising due to electron shell deformation caused by pushing forces from the side of its surrounding atoms. The corresponding electric signal generated in a liquid consisting of electrically neutral atoms by the ordinary sound waves is found extremely small. The second sound waves in superfluid $^4He$ generate the polarization of liquid induced by the relative accelerated motion of the superfluid and the normal component. The derived ratio of the amplitudes of temperature and electric polarization potential was proved to be practically temperature independent. Its magnitude is in reasonable correspondence with the experimental observations. The polarity of electric signal is determined by the sign of temperature gradient in accordance with the measurements. According to Wen's theory, a universal behavior of the fractional quantum Hall edge is expected at sufficiently low energies, where the dispersion of the elementary edge excitation is linear. A microscopic calculation shows that the actual dispersion is indeed linear at low energies, but deviates from linearity beyond certain energy, and also exhibits an "edge roton minimum." We determine the edge exponent from a microscopic approach, and find that the nonlinearity of the dispersion makes a surprisingly small correction to the edge exponent even at energies higher than the roton energy. We explain this insensitivity as arising from the fact that the energy at maximum spectral weight continues to show an almost linear behavior up to fairly high energies. We also formulate an effective field theory to describe the behavior of a reconstructed edge, taking into account multiple edge modes. We calculate the spectrum of elementary excitations in a two-dimensional exciton superfluid in the vicinity of a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that attraction of excitons due to their scattering with free electrons may lead to formation of a roton minimum. The energy of this minimum may go below the ground state energy which manifests breaking of the superfluidity. In calculations to date [1,2] of multi-layer stacks of dipolar condensates, created in one-dimensional optical lattices, the condensates have been assumed to be two-dimensional. In a real experiment, however, the condensates do not extend to infinity in the oblate direction, but have to be confined by a trap potential, too. By three-dimensional numerical simulations of this realistic experimental situation we find a crucial dependence of the phonon instability boundary on the number of layers. Moreover, near the boundary of the phonon instability, a variety of structured ground-state wave functions emerges, which may indicate the onset of a roton instability [3,4]., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We propose a method to measure the superfluid fraction of an atomic gas. The method involves the use of a vector potential generated by optical beams with non-zero angular momentum to simulate uniform rotation. We investigate tunneling properties of Bogoliubov phonons in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We find the anomalous enhancement of the quasiparticle current $J_{\rm q}$ carried by Bogoliubov phonons near a potential barrier, due to the supply of the excess current from the condensate. This effect leads to the increase of quasiparticle transmission probability in the low energy region found by Kovrizhin {\it et al.}. We also show that the quasiparticle current twists the phase of the condensate wavefunction across the barrier, leading to a finite Josephson supercurrent $J_{\rm s}$ through the barrier. This induced supercurrent flows in the opposite direction to the quasiparticle current so as to cancel out the enhancement of $J_{\rm q}$ and conserve the total current $J=J_{\rm q}+J_{\rm s}$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, published version

Strong 1D lattices usually lead to unconnected two-dimensional gases. The long-range character of the dipole-dipole interactions leads to a novel scenario where non-overlapping gases at different sites may interact significantly. We show that the excitations of non-overlapping condensates in 1D optical lattices acquire a band-like character, being collectively shared by different sites. In particular, the hybridization of the modes significantly enhances the rotonization of the excitations, and may induce roton-instability. Weakly interacting atomic or molecular bosons in quantum degenerate regime and trapped in harmonically confined optical lattices, exhibit a wedding cake structure consisting of insulating (Mott) shells. It is shown that superfluid regions emerge between Mott shells as a result of fluctuations due to finite hopping. It is found that the order parameter equation in the superfluid regions is not of the Gross-Pitaeviskii type except near the insulator to superfluid boundaries. The excitation spectra in the Mott and superfluid regions are obtained, and it is shown that the superfluid shells posses low energy sound modes with spatially dependent sound velocity described by a local index of refraction directly related to the local superfluid density. Lastly, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and vortex-antivortex pairs are discussed in thin (wide) superfluid shells (rings) limited by three (two) dimensional Mott regions., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures
