Abstract

To investigate the poorly constrained sub-mm counts and spectral properties of blazars we searched for these in the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) science demostration phase (SDP) survey catalog. We cross-matched 500$\mu$m sources brighter than 50 mJy with the FIRST radio catalogue. We found two blazars, both previously known. Our study is among the first blind blazar searches at sub-mm wavelengths, i.e., in the spectral regime where little is still known about the blazar SEDs, but where the synchrotron peak of the most luminous blazars is expected to occur. Our early results are consistent with educated extrapolations of lower frequency counts and question indications of substantial spectral curvature downwards and of spectral upturns at mm wavelengths. One of the two blazars is identified with a Fermi/LAT $\gamma$-ray source and a WMAP source. The physical parameters of the two blazars are briefly discussed.These observations demonstrate that the H-ATLAS survey will provide key information about the physics of blazars and their contribution to sub-mm counts., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (Herschel special issue)

Abstract

We predict the emission line luminosity functions (LFs) of the first 10 rotational transitions of CO in galaxies at redshift z=0 to z=10. This prediction relies on a recently presented simulation of the molecular cold gas content in ~3e7 evolving galaxies based on the Millennium Simulation. We combine this simulation with a model for the conversion between molecular mass and CO-line intensities, which incorporates the following mechanisms: (i) molecular gas is heated by the CMB, starbursts (SBs), and active galactic nuclei (AGNs); (ii) molecular clouds in dense or inclined galaxies can overlap; (iii) compact gas can attain a smooth distribution in the densest part of disks; (iv) CO-luminosities scale with metallicity changes between galaxies; (v) CO-luminosities are always detected against the CMB. We analyze the relative importance of these effects and predict the cosmic evolution of the CO-LFs. The most notable conclusion is that the detection of regular galaxies (i.e. no AGN, no massive SB) at high z>7 in CO-emission will be dramatically hindered by the weak contrast against the CMB, in contradiction to earlier claims that CMB-heating will ease the detection of high-redshift CO. The full simulation of extragalactic CO-lines and the predicted CO-LFs at any redshift can be accessed online, prior registration required} and they should be useful for the modeling of CO-line surveys with future telescopes, such as ALMA, the LMT, or the SKA., 8 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We study the 37 brightest radio sources in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). Using mid-IR (Spitzer MIPS 24 micron) data we expect to trace nuclear accretion activity, even if it is obscured at optical wavelengths, unless the obscuring column is extreme. Our results suggest that above the `FRI/FRII' radio luminosity break most of the radio sources are associated with objects that have excess mid-IR emission, only some of which are broad-line objects, although there is one clear low-accretion-rate FRI. The fraction of objects with mid-IR excess drops dramatically below the FRI/FRII break, although there exists at least one high-accretion-rate QSO. Investigation of mid-IR and blue excesses shows that they are correlated as predicted by a model in which a torus of dust absorbs ~30% of the light, and the dust above and below the torus scatters >~1% of the light., 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in conference proceedings of 'A Century of Cosmology; Past, Present and Future', Venice 2007

5. The 6C** sample of steep-spectrum radio sources: II - Redshift distribution and the space density of high-redshift radio galaxies

Abstract

We use the 6C** sample to investigate the co-moving space density of powerful, steep-spectrum radio sources. This sample, consisting of 68 objects, has virtually complete K-band photometry and spectroscopic redshifts for 32 per cent of the sources. In order to find its complete redshift distribution, we develop a method of redshift estimation based on the K-z diagram of the 3CRR, 6CE, 6C* and 7CRS radio galaxies. Based on this method, we derive redshift probability density functions for all the optically identified sources in the 6C** sample. Using a combination of spectroscopic and estimated redshifts, we select the most radio luminous sources in the sample. Their redshift distribution is then compared with the predictions of the radio luminosity function of Jarvis et al. We find that, within the uncertainties associated with the estimation method, the data are consistent with a constant co-moving space density of steep-spectrum radio sources beyond z > 2.5, and rule out a steep decline., 17 pages including 11 figures and 4 tables. Abstract

The Universe became fully reionized, and observable optically, at a time corresponding to redshift z~6.5, so it is only by studying the HI and molecular absorption lines against higher-redshift, radio-loud sources that one can hope to make detailed studies of the earliest stages of galaxy formation. At present no targets for such studies are known. In these proceedings we describe a survey which is underway to find radio-loud quasars at z > 6.5., 4 pages, 1 figure. 7. Two 100 Mpc-scale structures in the 3-D distribution of radio galaxies and their implications

Abstract

We present unequivocal evidence for a huge (~80 x 100 x 100 Mpc^3) super-structure at redshift z=0.27 in the 3-D distribution of radio galaxies from the TONS08 sample, confirming tentative evidence for such a structure from the 7C redshift survey (7CRS). A second, newly discovered super-structure is also less securely found at redshift 0.35 (of dimensions ~100 x 100 x 100 Mpc^3). We present full observational details on the TONS08 sample which was constructed to probe structures in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.5 by matching NVSS sources with objects in APM catalogues to obtain a sample of optically bright (E ~ R < 19.83), radio faint (1.4-GHz flux density S_1.4 > 3 mJy) radio galaxies in the same 25 deg^2 area as part-II of the 7CRS. Out of the total sample size of 84 radio galaxies, at least 25 are associated with the two ~100 Mpc-scale super-structures. We use quasi-linear structure formation theory to estimate the number of such structures expected in the TONS08 volume if the canonical value for radio galaxy bias is assumed. Under this assumption, the structures represent ~ 4-5 sigma peaks in the primordial density field and their expected number is low (~10^-2 - 10^-4). Fortunately, there are several plausible explanations (many of which are testable) for these low probabilities in the form of potential mechanisms for boosting the bias on large scales. These include: the association of radio galaxies with highly biased rich clusters in super-structures, enhanced triggering by group/group mergers, and enhanced triggering and/or redshift space distortion in collapsing systems as the growth of super-structures moves into the non-linear regime (abridged)., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 26 pages,16 figures. spectra can be found in: http://www-astro.physics.ox.ac.uk/~brand/08_paper.ps.gz

Abstract

We present preliminary results from HST imaging of radio-loud quasar hosts, covering a ~x100 range in radio luminosity but in a narrow redshift range (0.5 to 0.65). The sample was selected from our new, spectroscopically complete 7C survey and the 3CRR catalogue. Despite the very large radio luminosity range, the host luminosities are only weakly correlated (if at all) with radio power, perhaps reflecting a predominance of purely central engine processes in the formation of radio jets, and hence perhaps also in the radio-loud/-quiet dichotomy at these redshifts. Abstract

LOFAR, the LOw-Frequency ARray, is a new-generation radio interferometer constructed in the north of the Netherlands and across europe. Utilizing a novel phased-array design, LOFAR covers the largely unexplored low-frequency range from 10-240 MHz and provides a number of unique observing capabilities. Spreading out from a core located near the village of Exloo in the northeast of the Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing completion. A further five stations have been deployed throughout Germany, and one station has been built in each of France, Sweden, and the UK. Digital beam-forming techniques make the LOFAR system agile and allow for rapid repointing of the telescope as well as the potential for multiple simultaneous observations. With its dense core array and long interferometric baselines, LOFAR achieves unparalleled sensitivity and angular resolution in the low-frequency radio regime. The LOFAR facilities are jointly operated by the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) foundation, as an observatory open to the global astronomical community. LOFAR is one of the first radio observatories to feature automated processing pipelines to deliver fully calibrated science products to its user community. LOFAR's new capabilities, techniques and modus operandi make it an important pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We give an overview of the LOFAR instrument, its major hardware and software components, and the core science objectives that have driven its design.
