The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a next generation axion helioscope aiming at a sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling of a few 10^{-12} GeV^{-1}, i.e. 1-1.5 orders of magnitude beyond sensitivities achieved by the currently most sensitive axion helioscope, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). Crucial factors in improving the sensitivity for IAXO are the increase of the magnetic field volume together with the extensive use of x-ray focusing optics and low background detectors, innovations already successfully tested at CAST. We have searched for solar axions or other pseudoscalar particles that couple to two photons by using the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) setup. Whereas we previously have reported results from CAST with evacuated magnet bores (Phase I), setting limits on lower mass axions, here we report results from CAST where the magnet bores were filled with \hefour gas (Phase II) of variable pressure. The introduction of gas generated a refractive photon mass $m_\gamma$, thereby achieving the maximum possible conversion rate for those axion masses \ma that match $m_\gamma$. With 160 different pressure settings we have scanned \ma up to about 0.4 eV, taking approximately 2 h of data for each setting. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun, we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of $\gag\lesssim 2.17\times 10^{-10} {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ at 95% CL for $\ma \lesssim 0.4$ eV, the exact result depending on the pressure setting. The excluded parameter range covers realistic axion models with a Peccei-Quinn scale in the neighborhood of $f_{\rm a}\sim10^{7}$ GeV. Axions are expected to be produced in the sun via the Primakoff process. They may be detected through the inverse process in the laboratory, under the influence of a strong magnetic field, giving rise to X-rays of energies in the range of a few keV. Such an Axion detector is the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST), collecting data since 2003. Results have been published, pushing the axion-photon coupling g$_{a\gamma}$ below the 10$^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ limit at 95% CL, for axion masses less than 0.02 eV. This limit is nearly an order of magnitude lower than previous experimental limits and surpassed for the first time limits set from astrophysical arguments based on the energy-loss concept. Stars are powerful sources for weakly interacting particles that are produced by nuclear or plasma processes in their hot interior. These fluxes can be used for direct measurements (e.g. solar or supernova neutrinos) or the back-reaction on the star can be used to derive limits on new particles. An introduction to various topics in neutrino astrophysics is given for students with little prior exposure to this field. We explain neutrino production and propagation in stars, neutrino oscillations, and experimental searches for this effect. We also touch upon the cosmological role of neutrinos. Recent observations of TeV gamma rays from distant sources provide new limits on the cosmic infrared background and thus on radiative decays of background neutrinos. I translate these limits into bounds on transition dipole moments and compare them with limits from the energy-loss of globular-cluster stars. Positive evidence for neutrino oscillations is mounting from the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies and the LSND experiment. Accordingly, the neutrino mass differences appear to lie in the sub-eV range and at least some of the mixing angles appear to be large. We explore some of the consequences of this picture for supernova (SN) physics and cosmology. The bremsstrahlung process Nu_Tau -> Nu_e E+ E- Gamma is the dominant photon-producing decay of heavy Tau neutrinos with m_Nu_Tau > 2 m_e so that this process is instrumental for supernova 1987A constraints on the properties of these particles, notably on their mixing amplitude with Nu_e. We calculate the rate of the bremsstrahlung process as well as the photon spectrum and the angular distribution relative to the spin direction of the parent neutrino. A variation of Newton's constant $G$ over cosmological time scales would modify the main-squence time of globular cluster (GC) stars. We have calculated the evolution of low-mass stars typical for GCs both for standard non-varying $G$ and under the assumption of a linear variation of $G$. The age of the isochrones resulting from the latter models then was chosen such that the isochrones mimicked the standard ones at the turnoff. Assuming that the true age of GCs is between $8$ and $20\,\rm Gyr$, and because their apparent age is between $14$ and $18\,\rm Gyr$, we find that today $-35{\times}10^{-12}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\la\dot{G}/G\la 7{\times}10^{-12}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. The upper limit (gravity weaker in the past) is competitive with direct present-day bounds from celestial mechanics. Within independently determined $\dot{G}/G$ limits a time-varying $G$ as an explanation for the discrepancy between the cosmic expansion age and the apparent GC ages is conceivable., Comment: uu-encoded and compressed postscript version of the paper with figures
