Abstract

The field of neuromorphic computing has been rapidly evolving in recent years, with an increasing focus on hardware design and reliability. This special session paper provides an overview of the recent developments in neuromorphic computing, focusing on hardware design and reliability. We first review the traditional CMOS-based approaches to neuromorphic hardware design and identify the challenges related to scalability, latency, and power consumption. We then investigate alternative approaches based on emerging technologies, specifically integrated photonics approaches within the NEUROPULS project. Finally, we examine the impact of device variability and aging on the reliability of neuromorphic hardware and present techniques for mitigating these effects. Abstract

This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. Abstract

International audience; This paper extends the concept of Laplacian filtered quasi-Helmholtz decompositions we have recently introduced, to the basis-free projector-based setting. This extension allows the discrete analyses of electromagnetic integral operators spectra without passing via an explicit Loop-Star decomposition as previously done. We also present a fast scheme for the evaluation of the filters in quasi linear complexity in the total number of unknowns. Together with the fact that only a logarithmic number of these filters are required for solving the h-refinement breakdown of electric field integral equation, this results in an effective preconditioner that rivals Calder\'on strategies in performance without relying on barycentric refinements. Numerical results confirm the theoretically predicted behavior and the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract

We propose a nonlinear registration-based model reduction procedure for rapid and reliable solution of parameterized two-dimensional steady conservation laws. This class of problems is challenging for model reduction techniques due to the presence of nonlinear terms in the equations and also due to the presence of parameter-dependent discontinuities that cannot be adequately represented through linear approximation spaces. Our approach builds on a general (i.e., independent of the underlying equation) registration procedure for the computation of a mapping $\Phi$ that tracks moving features of the solution field and on an hyper-reduced least-squares Petrov-Galerkin reduced-order model for the rapid and reliable computation of the solution coefficients. The contributions of this work are twofold. First, we investigate the application of registration-based methods to two-dimensional hyperbolic systems. Second, we propose a multi-fidelity approach to reduce the offline costs associated with the construction of the parameterized mapping and the reduced-order model. We discuss the application to an inviscid supersonic flow past a parameterized bump, to illustrate the many features of our method and to demonstrate its effectiveness., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

How do pedestrians choose their paths within city street networks? Human path planning has been extensively studied at the aggregate level of mobility flows, and at the individual level with strictly designed behavioural experiments. However, a comprehensive, individual-level model of how humans select pedestrian paths in real urban environments is still lacking. Here, we analyze human path planning behaviour in a large dataset of individual pedestrians, whose GPS traces were continuously recorded as they pursued their daily goals. Through statistical analysis we reveal two robust empirical discoveries, namely that (1) people increasingly deviate from the shortest path as the distance between origin and destination increases, and (2) individual choices exhibit direction-dependent asymmetries when origin and destination are swapped. In order to address the above findings, which cannot be explained by existing models, we develop a vector-based navigation framework motivated by the neural evidence of direction-encoding cells in hippocampal brain networks, and by behavioural evidence of vector navigation in animals. Modelling pedestrian path preferences by vector-based navigation increases the model's predictive power by 35%, compared to a model based on minimizing distance with stochastic effects. We show that these empirical findings and modelling results generalise across two major US cities with drastically different street networks, suggesting that vector-based navigation is a universal property of human path planning, independent of specific city environments. Our results offer a simple, unified explanation of numerous findings about human navigation, and posit a computational mechanism that may underlie the human capacity to efficiently navigate in environments at various scales.

Abstract

In this work we define a unified mathematical framework to deepen our understanding of the role of stochastic gradient (SG) noise on the behavior of Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling (SGMCMC) algorithms. Our formulation unlocks the design of a novel, practical approach to posterior sampling, which makes the SG noise isotropic using a fixed learning rate that we determine analytically, and that requires weaker assumptions than existing algorithms. In contrast, the common traits of existing \sgmcmc algorithms is to approximate the isotropy condition either by drowning the gradients in additive noise (annealing the learning rate) or by making restrictive assumptions on the \sg noise covariance and the geometry of the loss landscape. Extensive experimental validations indicate that our proposal is competitive with the state-of-the-art on \sgmcmc, while being much more practical to use.

Abstract

International audience; Classical molecular dynamics simulations have recently become a standard tool for the study of electrochemical systems. State-of-the-art approaches represent the electrodes as perfect conductors, modelling their responses to the charge distribution of electrolytes via the so-called fluctuating charge model. These fluctuating charges are additional degrees of freedom that, in a Born-Oppenheimer spirit, adapt instantaneously to changes in the environment to keep each electrode at a constant potential. Here we show that this model can be treated in the framework of constrained molecular dynamics, leading to a symplectic and time-reversible algorithm for the evolution of all the degrees of freedom of the system. The computational cost and the accuracy of the new method are similar to current alternative implementations of the model. The advantage lies in the accuracy and long term stability guaranteed by the formal properties of the algorithm and in the possibility to systematically introduce additional kinematic conditions of arbitrary number and form. We illustrate the performance of the constrained dynamics approach by enforcing the electroneutrality of the electrodes in a simple capacitor consisting of two graphite electrodes separated by a slab of liquid water.

Abstract

Linked Open Data (LOD) is the publicly available RDF data in the Web. Each LOD entity is identfied by a URI and accessible via HTTP. LOD encodes globalscale knowledge potentially available to any human as well as artificial intelligence that may want to benefit from it as background knowledge for supporting their tasks. LOD has emerged as the backbone of applications in diverse fields such as Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Computer Vision, Speech Recognition, and many more. Nevertheless, regardless of the specific tasks that LOD-based tools aim to address, the reuse of such knowledge may be challenging for diverse reasons, e.g. semantic heterogeneity, provenance, and data quality. As aptly stated by Heath et al. Linked Data might be outdated, imprecise, or simply wrong": there arouses a necessity to investigate the problem of linked data validity. This work reports a collaborative effort performed by nine teams of students, guided by an equal number of senior researchers, attending the International Semantic Web Research School (ISWS 2018) towards addressing such investigation from different perspectives coupled with different approaches to tackle the issue.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, $e p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The $\varphi^*_{\pi}$-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) and shed new light on nucleon structure., Comment: 7 pages, 6figures

Abstract

The paper presents a memoir of 1931 written by Vito Volterra on the Italian physicists of the nineteenth century and the researches these scientists made after the discoveries of Michael Faraday on electromagnetism. Here, the memoir entitled "I fisici italiani e le ricerche di Faraday" is translated from Italian. It was written to commemorate the centenary of Faraday's discovery of the electromagnetic induction. Besides being a remarkable article on the history of science, it was also, in a certain extent, a political paper. In fact, in 1931, the same year of the publication of this article, Mussolini imposed a mandatory oath of loyalty to Italian academies. Volterra was one of the very few professors who refused to take this oath of loyalty. Abstract

Persistent homology analysis, a recently developed computational method in algebraic topology, is applied to the study of the phase transitions undergone by the so-called XY-mean field model and by the phi^4 lattice model, respectively. For both models the relationship between phase transitions and the topological properties of certain submanifolds of configuration space are exactly known. Abstract

We present a message-passing algorithm to solve the edge disjoint path problem (EDP) on graphs incorporating under a unique framework both traffic optimization and path length minimization. The min-sum equations for this problem present an exponential computational cost in the number of paths. To overcome this obstacle we propose an efficient implementation by mapping the equations onto a weighted combinatorial matching problem over an auxiliary graph. We perform extensive numerical simulations on random graphs of various types to test the performance both in terms of path length minimization and maximization of the number of accommodated paths. In addition, we test the performance on benchmark instances on various graphs by comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms and results found in the literature. Our message-passing algorithm always outperforms the others in terms of the number of accommodated paths when considering non trivial instances (otherwise it gives the same trivial results). Remarkably, the largest improvement in performance with respect to the other methods employed is found in the case of benchmarks with meshes, where the validity hypothesis behind message-passing is expected to worsen. In these cases, even though the exact message-passing equations do not converge, by introducing a reinforcement parameter to force convergence towards a sub optimal solution, we were able to always outperform the other algorithms with a peak of 27% performance improvement in terms of accommodated paths. On random graphs, we numerically observe two separated regimes: one in which all paths can be accommodated and one in which this is not possible. We also investigate the behaviour of both the number of paths to be accommodated and their minimum total length., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

International audience; In context of increasing use of renewable sources, it is of importance to correctly evaluate the actual sustainability of their implementation. Emergy analysis is one of the possible methods useful for such an assessment. This work aims to demonstrate how the emergy approach can be used to assess the sustainability of wind energy resource in Europe. The Emergy Index of Sustainability (EIS) and the Emergy Yield Ratio (EYR) are used to analyze 90 stations of European regions for three types of wind turbines. To do so, the simplified Chou wind turbine model is used for different set of parameters as: nominal power and size of the wind turbines , and cut-in and cutout wind speeds. Based on the calculation of the emergy indices, a mapping is proposed to identify the most appropriate locations for an implementation of wind turbines in European regions. The influence of the wind turbine type on the sustainability is also analyzed, in link with the local wind resource. Thus, it is concluded that the emergy sustainability indices are sensitive to the wind turbine design parameters (size, cut-in and cutout wind speed).

International audience; We propose efficient techniques for generating independent identically distributed uniform random samples inside semialgebraic sets. The proposed algorithm leverages recent results on the approximation of indicator functions by polynomials %\cite{DabHen:13} to develop acceptance/rejection based sample generation algorithms with guaranteed performance in terms of rejection rate (the number of samples that should be generated in order to obtain an accepted sample). Moreover, the {acceptance} rate is shown to be is asymptotically optimal, in the sense that it tends to one (all samples accepted) as the degree of the polynomial approximation increases. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated by a numerical example.

Abstract

International audience; We present new empirical evidence, based on millions of interactions on Twitter, confirming that human contacts scale with population sizes. We integrate such observations into a reaction-diffusion metapopulation framework providing an analytical expression for the global invasion threshold of a contagion process. Remarkably, the scaling of human contacts is found to facilitate the spreading dynamics. Our results show that the scaling properties of human interactions can significantly affect dynamical processes mediated by human contacts such as the spread of diseases, and ideas.

Abstract

The analysis of non-radiative sources of static or time-dependent gravitational fields in the Solar System is crucial to accurately estimate the free-fall orbits of the LISA space mission. In particular, we take into account the gravitational effects of Interplanetary Dust (ID) on the spacecraft trajectories. The perturbing gravitational field has been calculated for some ID density distributions that fit the observed zodiacal light. Then we integrated the Gauss planetary equations to get the deviations from the LISA keplerian orbits around the Sun. This analysis can be eventually extended to Local Dark Matter (LDM), as gravitational fields are expected to be similar for ID and LDM distributions. Under some strong assumptions on the displacement noise at very low frequency, the Doppler data collected during the whole LISA mission could provide upper limits on ID and LDM densities., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, to be published on the special issue of "Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy" on the CELMEC V conference

Abstract

We calculate the effect of the Earth-Moon (EM) system on the free-fall motion of LISA test masses. We show that the periodic gravitational pulling of the EM system induces a resonance with fundamental frequency 1 yr^-1 and a series of periodic perturbations with frequencies equal to integer harmonics of the synodic month (9.92 10^-7 Hz). We then evaluate the effects of these perturbations (up to the 6th harmonics) on the relative motions between each test masses couple, finding that they range between 3mm and 10pm for the 2nd and 6th harmonic, respectively. If we take the LISA sensitivity curve, as extrapolated down to 10^-6 Hz, we obtain that a few harmonics of the EM system can be detected in the Doppler data collected by the LISA space mission. This suggests that the EM system gravitational near field could provide an absolute calibration for the LISA sensitivity at very low frequencies., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In this paper an experimental validation of numerical approaches aimed to predict the coupled behaviour of microbeams for out-of-plane bending tests is performed. This work completes a previous investigation concerning in plane microbeams bending. Often out-of-plane microcantilevers and clamped-clamped microbeams suffer the presence of residual strain and stress, which affect the value of pull-in voltage. In case of microcantilever an accurate modelling includes the effect of the initial curvature due to microfabrication. In double clamped microbeams a preloading applied by tensile stress is considered. Geometrical onlinearity caused by mechanical coupling between axial and flexural behaviour is detected and modelled. Experimental results demonstrate a good agreement between FEM approaches proposed and tests. A fairly fast and accurate prediction of pull-in condition is performed, thus numerical models can be used to identify residual stress in microbridges by reverse analysis from the measured value of pull-in voltage., Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association (http://irevues.inist.fr/handle/2042/16838)

Abstract

This paper concerns the experimental validation of some mathematical models previously developed by the authors, to predict the static behaviour of microelectrostatic actuators, basically free-clamped microbeams. This layout is currently used in RF-MEMS design operation or even in material testing at microscale. The analysis investigates preliminarily the static behaviour of a set of microcantilevers bending in-plane. This investigation is aimed to distinguish the geometrical linear behaviour, exhibited under small displacement assumption, from the geometrical nonlinearity, caused by large deflection. The applied electromechanical force, which nonlinearly depends on displacement, charge and voltage, is predicted by a coupled-field approach, based on numerical methods and herewith experimentally validated, by means of a Fogale Zoomsurf 3D. Model performance is evaluated on pull-in prediction and on the curve displacement vs. voltage.
