$\delta$ Orionis is the closest massive multiple stellar system and one of the brightest members of the Orion OB association. The primary (Aa1) is a unique evolved O star. In this work, we applied a two-step disentangling method to a series of spectra in the blue region (430 to 450 nm), and we detected spectral lines of the secondary (Aa2). For the first time, we were able to constrain the orbit of the tertiary (Ab) - to 55 450 d or 152 yr - using variable $\gamma$ velocities and new speckle interferometric measurements, which have been published in the Washington Double Star Catalogue. In addition, the Gaia DR3 parallax of the faint component (Ca+Cb) constrains the distance of the system to (381 $\pm$ 8) pc, which is just in the centre of the Orion OB1b association, at (382 $\pm$ 1) pc. Consequently, we found that the component masses according to the three-body model are 17.8, 8.5, and 8.7 M$_{\odot}$, for Aa1, Aa2, and Ab, respectively, with the uncertainties of the order of $1$ M$_{\odot}$. We used new photometry from the BRITE satellites together with astrometry, radial velocities, eclipse timings, eclipse duration, spectral line profiles, and spectral energy distribution to refine radiative properties. The components, classified as O9.5 II + B2 V + B0 IV, have radii of 13.1, 4.1, and 12.0 R$_{\odot}$, which means that $\delta$ Ori A is a pre-mass-transfer object. The frequency of 0.478 cycles per day, known from the Fourier analysis of the residual light curve and X-ray observations, was identified as the rotation frequency of the tertiary. $\delta$ Ori could be related to other bright stars in Orion, in particular, $\zeta$ Ori, which has a similar architecture, or $\varepsilon$ Ori, which is a single supergiant, and possibly a post-mass-transfer object., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures

The hot nine-component system HD 93206, which contains a gravitationally bounded eclipsing Ac1+Ac2 binary ($P=5.9987$~d) and a spectroscopic Aa1+Aa2 ($P=20.734$~d) binary can provide~important insights into the origin and evolution of massive stars. Using archival and new spectra, and a~rich collection of ground-based and space photometric observations, we carried out a detailed study of this object. We provide a much improved description of both short orbits and a good estimate of the mutual period of both binaries of about 14500~d (i.e. 40 years). For the first time, we detected weak lines of the fainter component of the 6.0~d eclipsing binary in the optical region of the spectrum, measured their radial velocities, and derived a mass ratio of $M_{\rm Ac2}/M_{\rm Ac1}=1.29$, which is the opposite of what was estimated from the International Ultraviolet explorer (IUE) spectra. We confirm that the eclipsing subsystem Ac is semi-detached and is therefore in a phase of large-scale mass transfer between its components. The Roche-lobe filling and spectroscopically brighter component Ac1 is the less massive of the two and is eclipsed in the secondary minimum. We show that the bulk of the \ha emission, so far believed to be associated with the eclipsing system, moves with the primary O9.7I component Aa1 of the 20.73~d spectroscopic binary. However, the weak emission in the higher Balmer lines seems to be associated with the accretion disc around component Ac2. We demonstrate that accurate masses and other basic physical properties including the distance of this unique system can be obtained but require a more sophisticated modelling. Results of an analysis of the BRITE-Constellation and SMEI photometry and radial-velocity observations, archival and new, of two single-lined spectroscopic binary systems $��$ Centauri and $��$ Lupi are reported. In the case of $��$ Lup AB, a visual binary, an examination of the light-time effect shows that component A is the spectroscopic binary. Both $��$ Cen and $��$ Lup exhibit light variations with the orbital period. The variations are caused by the reflection effect, i.e. heating of the secondary's hemisphere by the early-B main sequence (MS) primary component's light. The modelling of the light curves augmented with the fundamental parameters of the primary components obtained from the literature photometric data and Hipparcos parallaxes, shows that the secondary components are pre-MS stars, in the process of contracting onto the MS. $��$ Cen and $��$ Lup A are thus found to be non-eclipsing counterparts of the B2 IV eclipsing binary (and a $��$ Cephei variable) 16 (EN) Lac, the B5 IV eclipsing binary (and an SPB variable) $��$ Eri, and the recently discovered LMC nascent eclipsing binaries., 15 pages, 15 figures, published in MNRAS

We present a seismic study of $��$ Scuti based on a mode identification from multicoulor photometry. The dominant frequency can be associated only with a radial mode and the second frequency is, most probably, a dipole mode. The other six frequencies have more ambiguous identifications. The photometric mode identification provided also some constraints on the atmospheric metallicity [m/H]$\approx$+0.5 and microturbulent velocity $��_t\approx 4~\kms$.\\ For models reproducing the dominant frequency, we show that only the fundamental mode is possible and the first overtone is excluded. However, the location of $��$ Scuti near the terminal age main sequence requires the consideration of three stages of stellar evolution. For the star to be on the main sequence, it is necessary to include overshooting from the convective core with a parameter of at least $��_{\rm ov}=0.25$ at the metallicity greater than $Z=0.019$. It turned out that the value of the relative amplitude of the bolometric flux variations (the nonadiabatic parameter $f$) is mainly determined by the position of the star in the HR diagram, i.e., by its effective temperature and luminosity, whereas the effect of the evolutionary stage is minor. On the other hand, the convective efficiency in the subphotospheric layers has a dominant effect on the value of the parameter $f$. %in the $��$ Sct star models. Comparing the theoretical and empirical values of $f$ for the radial dominant mode, we obtain constraints on the mixing length parameter $��_{\rm MLT}$ which is less than about 1.0, independently of the adopted opacity data and chemical mixture. This value of $��_{\rm MLT}$ is substantially smaller than for a calibrated solar model indicating rather low to moderately efficient convection in the envelope of $��$ Scuti., accepted for publication in MNRAS, 17 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

$��^{9}$ Eri is a Bp star that was previously reported to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Using 17 ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric (Stokes $V$) observations we identified the weak spectral lines of the secondary component and detected a strong magnetic field in the primary. We performed orbital analysis of the radial velocities of both components to find a slightly eccentric orbit ($e= 0.129$) with a period of $5.95382(2)$ days. The longitudinal magnetic field ($B_\ell$) of the primary was measured from each of the Stokes $V$ profiles, with typical error bars smaller than 10 G. Equivalent widths (EWs) of LSD profiles corresponding to only the Fe lines were also measured. We performed frequency analysis of both the $B_\ell$ and EW measurements, as well as of the Hipparcos, SMEI, and TESS photometric data. All sets of photometric observations produce two clear, strong candidates for the rotation period of the Bp star: 1.21 days and 3.82 days. The $B_\ell$ and EW measurements are consistent with only the 3.82-day period. We conclude that HD 25267 consists of a late-type Bp star (M= $3.6_{-0.2}^{+0.1} M_\odot$, T= $12580_{-120}^{+150}$ K) with a rotation period of 3.82262(4) days orbiting with a period of 5.95382(2) days with a late-A/early-F type secondary companion (M= $1.6\pm 0.1 M_\odot$, T= $7530_{-510}^{+580}$ K). The Bp star's magnetic field is approximately dipolar with $i= 41\pm 2^{\circ}$, $��= 158\pm 5^{\circ}$ and $B_{\rm d}= 1040\pm 50$ G. Context. Be stars are physically complex systems that continue to challenge theory to understand their rapid rotation, complex variability and decretion disks. $��$ Cassiopeiae ($��$ Cas) is one such star but is even more curious because of its unexplained hard thermal X-ray emission. Aims. We aim to examine the optical variability of $��$ Cas and thereby to shed more light on its puzzling behaviour. Methods. Three hundred twenty-one archival H$��$ spectra from 2006 to 2017 are analysed to search for frequencies corresponding to the 203.5 day orbit of the companion. Space photometry from the SMEI satellite from 2003 to 2011 and the BRITE-Constellation of nano-satellites between 2015 and 2019 is investigated in the period range from a couple of hours to a few days. Results. The orbital period of the companion of 203.5 days is confirmed with independent measurements from the structure of the H$��$ line emission. A strong blue/red asymmetry in the amplitude distribution across the H$��$ emission line could hint at a spiral structure in the decretion disk. With the space photometry, the known frequency of 0.82 d$^{-1}$ is confirmed in data from the early 2000s. A higher frequency of 2.48 d$^{-1}$ is present in the data from 2015 to 2019 and possibly also in the early 2000s. A third frequency at 1.25 d$^{-1}$ is proposed to exist in both SMEI and BRITE data. The only explanation covering all three rapid variations seems to be nonradial pulsation. The two higher frequencies are incompatible with rotation., 13 pages, 12 figures. F type stars are characterised by several physical processes such as different pulsation mechanisms, rotation, convection, diffusion, and magnetic fields. The rapidly rotating delta Scuti star beta Cas can be considered as a benchmark star to study the interaction of several of these effects. We investigate the pulsational and magnetic field properties of beta Cas. We also determine the star's apparent fundamental parameters and chemical abundances. Based on photometric time series obtained from three different space missions (BRITE-Constellation, SMEI, and TESS), we conduct a frequency analysis and investigate the stability of the pulsation amplitudes over four years of observations. We investigate the presence of a magnetic field and its properties using spectropolarimetric observations taken with the Narval instrument by applying the Least Square Deconvolution and Zeeman Doppler Imaging techniques. beta Cas shows only three independent p-mode frequencies down to the few ppm-level; its highest amplitude frequency is suggested to be a $n=3$, $\ell = 2$, $m=0$ mode. Its magnetic field structure is quite complex and almost certainly of a dynamo origin. beta Cas' atmosphere is slightly deficient in iron peak elements and slightly overabundant in C, O, and heavier elements. Atypically for delta Scuti stars, we can only detect three pulsation modes down to exceptionally low noise levels for beta Cas. The star is also one of very few delta Scuti pulsators known to date to show a measurable magnetic field, and the first delta Scuti star with a dynamo magnetic field. These characteristics make beta Cas an interesting target for future studies of dynamo processes in the thin convective envelopes of F-type stars, of the transition region between fossil and dynamo fields, and the interaction between pulsations and magnetic field., Comment: 16 pages plus 9 for the appendix, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

CU Vir has been the first main sequence star that showed regular radio pulses that persist for decades, resembling the radio lighthouse of pulsars and interpreted as auroral radio emission similar to that found in planets. The star belongs to a rare group of magnetic chemically peculiar stars with variable rotational period. We study the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of CU Vir obtained using STIS spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to search for the source of radio emission and to test the model of the rotational period evolution. We used our own far-UV and visual photometric observations supplemented with the archival data to improve the parameters of the quasisinusoidal long-term variations of the rotational period. We predict the flux variations of CU Vir from surface abundance maps and compare these variations with UV flux distribution. We searched for wind, auroral, and interstellar lines in the spectra. The UV and visual light curves display the same long-term period variations supporting their common origin. New updated abundance maps provide better agreement with the observed flux distribution. The upper limit of the wind mass-loss rate is about $10^{-12}\,M_\odot\,\rm{yr}^{-1}$. We do not find any auroral lines. We find rotationally modulated variability of interstellar lines, which is most likely of instrumental origin. Our analysis supports the flux redistribution from far-UV to near-UV and visual domains originating in surface abundance spots as the main cause of the flux variability in chemically peculiar stars. Therefore, UV and optical variations are related and the structures leading to these variations are rigidly confined to the stellar surface. The radio emission of CU Vir is most likely powered by a very weak presumably purely metallic wind, which leaves no imprint in spectra., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We analyse time-series observations from the BRITE-Constellation of the well known $��$ Cephei type star $��$ Ophiuchi. Seven previously known frequencies were confirmed and nineteen new frequency peaks were detected. In particular, high-order g modes, typical for the SPB (Slowly Pulsating B-type star) pulsators, are uncovered. These low-frequency modes are also obtained from the 7-year SMEI light curve. If g modes are associated with the primary component of $��$ Oph, then our discovery allows, as in the case of other hybrid pulsators, to infer more comprehensive information on the internal structure. To this aim we perform in-depth seismic studies involving simultaneous fitting of mode frequencies, reproducing mode instability and adjusting the relative amplitude of the bolometric flux variations. To explain the mode instability in the observed frequency range a significant increase of the mean opacity in the vicinity of the $Z$-bump is needed. Moreover, constraints on mass, overshooting from the convective core and rotation are derived. If the low-frequency modes come from the speckle B5 companion then taking into account the effects of rotation is enough to explain the pulsational mode instability., 15 pages, 10 figures

Among Wolf-Rayet stars, those of subtype WN8 are the intrinsically most variable. We have explored the long-term photometric variability of the brightest known WN8 star, WR 40, through four contiguous months of time-resolved, single-passband optical photometry with the BRIght Target Explorer (BRITE) nanosatellite mission. The Fourier transform of the observed light-curve reveals that the strong light variability exhibited by WR 40 is dominated by many randomly-triggered, transient, low-frequency signals. We establish a model in which the whole wind consists of stochastic clumps following an outflow visibility promptly rising to peak brightness upon clump emergence from the optically thick pseudo-photosphere in the wind, followed by a gradual decay according to the right-half of a Gaussian. Free electrons in each clump scatter continuum light from the star. We explore a scenario where the clump size follows a power-law distribution, and another one with an ensemble of clumps of constant size. Both scenarios yield simulated light curves morphologically resembling the observed light curve remarkably well, indicating that one cannot uniquely constrain the details of clump size distribution with only a photometric light curve. The upper main sequence stars CU Virginis is the most enigmatic object among magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. It is an unusually fast rotator showing strictly periodic light variations in all regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, as well as spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric changes. At same time, it is also the first radio main-sequence pulsar. Exploiting information hidden in phase variations, we monitored the secular oscillation of the rotational period during the last 53 years. Applying own phenomenological approach, we analyzed 37\,975 individual photometric and spectroscopic measurements from 72 data sources and improved the O-C model. Exoplanet properties crucially depend on their host stars' parameters. In case the exoplanet host star shows pulsations, asteroseismology can be used for an improved description of the stellar parameters. We aim to revisit the pulsational properties of beta Pic and identify its pulsation modes from normalised amplitudes in five different passbands. We also investigate the potential presence of a magnetic field. We conduct a frequency analysis using three seasons of BRITE-Constellation observations in the BRITE blue and red filters, the ~620-day long bRing light curve and the nearly 8-year long SMEI photometric time series. We calculate normalised amplitudes using all passbands including previously published values obtained from ASTEP observations. We investigate the magnetic properties of beta Pic using spectropolarimetric observations conducted with the HARPSpol instrument. Using 2D rotating models, we fit the normalised amplitudes and frequencies through Monte Carlo Markov Chains. We identify 15 pulsation frequencies in the range from 34 to 55c/d, where two display clear amplitude variability. We use the normalised amplitudes in up to five passbands to identify the modes as three l = 1, six l = 2 and six l = 3 modes. beta Pic is shown to be non-magnetic with an upper limit of the possible undetected dipolar field of 300G. Multiple fits to the frequencies and normalised amplitudes are obtained including one with a near equator-on inclination for beta Pic, which corresponds to our expectations based on the orbital inclination of beta Pic b and the orientation of the circumstellar disk. This solution leads to a rotation rate of 27% of the Keplerian break-up velocity, a radius of 1.497+-0.025Rsun, and a mass of 1.797+-0.035Msun. Recent BRITE-Constellation space photometry of the slowly rotating, magnetic $��$ Cep pulsator $��^1$ CMa permits a new analysis of its pulsation properties. Analysis of the two-colour BRITE data reveals the well-known single pulsation period of $0.209$ d, along with its first and second harmonics. A similar analysis of SMEI and TESS observations yields compatible results, with the higher precision TESS observations also revealing several low-amplitude modes with frequencies below 5 d$^{-1}$; some of these are likely $g$ modes. The phase lag between photometric and radial velocity maxima - equal to 0.334 cycles - is significantly larger than the typical value of $1/4$ observed in other large-amplitude $��$ Cep stars. The phase lag, as well as the strong dependence of phase of maximum light on wavelength, can be reconciled with seismic models only if the dominant mode is the fundamental radial mode. We employ all published photometric and radial velocity measurements, spanning over a century, to evaluate the stability of the pulsation period. The $O-C$ diagram exhibits a clear parabolic shape consistent with a mean rate of period change $\dot P=0.34\pm 0.02$ s/cen. The residuals from the best-fit parabola exhibit scatter that is substantially larger than the uncertainties. In particular, dense sampling obtained during the past $\sim$20 years suggests more complex and rapid period variations. Those data cannot be coherently phased with the mean rate of period change, and instead require $\dot P\sim0.9$ s/cen. We present the first asteroseismic results for $��$ Scuti and $��$ Doradus stars observed in Sectors 1 and 2 of the TESS mission. We utilise the 2-min cadence TESS data for a sample of 117 stars to classify their behaviour regarding variability and place them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram using Gaia DR2 data. Included within our sample are the eponymous members of two pulsator classes, $��$ Doradus and SX Phoenicis. Our sample of pulsating intermediate-mass stars observed by TESS also allows us to confront theoretical models of pulsation driving in the classical instability strip for the first time and show that mixing processes in the outer envelope play an important role. We derive an empirical estimate of 74% for the relative amplitude suppression factor as a result of the redder TESS passband compared to the Kepler mission using a pulsating eclipsing binary system. Furthermore, our sample contains many high-frequency pulsators, allowing us to probe the frequency variability of hot young $��$ Scuti stars, which were lacking in the Kepler mission data set, and identify promising targets for future asteroseismic modelling. Preliminary results of the analysis of the combined space-based BRITE and SMEI, and ground-based Stroemgren photometry are presented. The BRITE data allowed to find seven p and three g modes in the frequency spectrum of this star; only four p modes were known in this star prior to this study. $��$ Car is a massive, eccentric binary with a rich observational history. We obtained the first high-cadence, high-precision light curves with the BRITE-Constellation nanosatellites over 6 months in 2016 and 6 months in 2017. The light curve is contaminated by several sources including the Homunculus nebula and neighboring stars, including the eclipsing binary CPD$-$59$^\circ$2628. However, we found two coherent oscillations in the light curve. These may represent pulsations that are not yet understood but we postulate that they are related to tidally excited oscillations of $��$ Car's primary star, and would be similar to those detected in lower-mass eccentric binaries. In particular, one frequency was previously detected by van Genderen et al. and Sterken et al. through the time period of 1974 to 1995 through timing measurements of photometric maxima. Thus, this frequency seems to have been detected for nearly four decades, indicating that it has been stable in frequency over this time span. These pulsations could help provide the first direct constraints on the fundamental parameters of the primary star if confirmed and refined with future observations., 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

The BTr and UBr satellites observed $\beta$ Lyrae from May to October 2016 to continuously monitor light-curve instabilities with the time resolution of about 100 mins. An instrumental problem affecting localized patches on the BTr CCD detector has been discovered by comparison with partly simultaneous UBr observations; the origin of the problem is being investigated. NGC 6910 is the northern hemisphere open cluster known to be rich in $��$ Cephei-type stars. Using four-season photometry obtained in Bia��k��w (Poland) and Xinglong (China) observatories, we performed variability survey of NGC 6910. As the result, we found over 100 variable stars in the field of the cluster, including many stars showing variability due to pulsations and binarity. Thanks to the spectroscopic observations, we also detected changes in the profiles of spectral lines of $��$ Cep stars, caused by pulsations., 3 pages, 1 figure, XXXVIII Polish Astronomical Society Meeting

We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $��$ Ori and $��$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $��$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. In early-type Be stars, groups of nonradial pulsation (NRP) modes with numerically related frequencies may be instrumental for the release of excess angular momentum through mass-ejection events. Difference and sum/harmonic frequencies often form additional groups. The goal of this study is to find out whether a similar frequency pattern occurs in the cooler third-magnitude B7-8\,IIIe shell star $��$ Pup. Time-series analyses are performed of space photometry with BRITE-Constellation (2015, 2016/17, and 2017/18), SMEI (2003--011), and Hipparcos (1989-1993). Two IUE SWP and 27 optical echelle spectra spanning 20 years were retrieved from various archives. The optical spectra exhibit no anomalies or well-defined variabilities. A magnetic field was not detected. All three photometry satellites recorded variability near 0.656 c/d which is resolved into three features separated by ~0.0021 c/d. First harmonics form a second frequency group, also spaced by ~0.0021 c/d. The frequency spacing is very nearly but not exactly equidistant. Variability near 0.0021 c/d was not detected. The long-term frequency stability could be used to derive meaningful constraints on the properties of a putative companion star. The IUE spectra do not reveal the presence of a hot subluminous secondary. $��$\,Pup is another Be star exhibiting an NRP variability pattern with long-term constancy and underlining the importance of combination frequencies and frequency groups. $��$ Eridani is a well known multiperiodic $��$ Cephei pulsator which exhibits also the SPB (Slowly Pulsating B-type stars) type modes. Recent frequency analysis of the BRITE photometry of $��$ Lupi showed that the star is also a hybrid $��$ Cep/SPB pulsator, in which both high and low frequencies were detected. We construct complex seismic models in order to account for the observed frequency range, the values of the frequencies themselves and the non-adiabatic parameter $f$ for the dominant mode. Observations of 25 Ori much expand the picture derived of other early-type Be stars with BRITE and SMEI. Two instead of one difference frequencies rule the variability: (a) The lower one, 0.0129 c/d, is the frequency of events with full amplitudes of 100-200 mmag which may signal mass loss possibly driven by the higher one, 0.1777 c/d. (b) Much of the entire power spectrum is a tightly woven network of combination frequencies: (i) Below 0.25\,c/d, numerous frequencies are difference frequencies. (ii) Many frequencies above 2.5 c/d can be represented as sum frequencies and in a few cases as harmonics. (iii) Many frequencies between 1.1 and 1.75\,c/d can be portrayed as parents of combination frequencies. From $5.5$ months of dual-band optical photometric monitoring at the $1$ mmag level, BRITE-Constellation has revealed two simultaneous types of variability in the O4I(n)fp star $��$ Puppis: one single periodic non-sinusoidal component superimposed on a stochastic component. The monoperiodic component is the $1.78$ d signal previously detected by Coriolis/SMEI, but this time along with a prominent first harmonic. The shape of this signal changes over time, a behaviour that is incompatible with stellar oscillations but consistent with rotational modulation arising from evolving bright surface inhomogeneities. By means of a constrained non-linear light curve inversion algorithm we mapped the locations of the bright surface spots and traced their evolution. Our simultaneous ground-based multi-site spectroscopic monitoring of the star unveiled cyclical modulation of its He II $\lambda4686$ wind emission line with the $1.78$-day rotation period, showing signatures of Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) that turn out to be driven by the bright photospheric spots observed by BRITE. Traces of wind clumps are also observed in the He II $\lambda4686$ line and are correlated with the amplitudes of the stochastic component of the light variations probed by BRITE at the photosphere, suggesting that the BRITE observations additionally unveiled the photospheric drivers of wind clumps in $��$ Pup and that the clumping phenomenon starts at the very base of the wind. �� Ori is a well studied massive binary consisting of an O9 III + B1 III/IV star. Due to its high eccentricity (e = 0.764) and short orbital period (P orb = 29.13376 d), it has been considered to be a good candidate to show evidence of tidal effects; however, none have previously been identified. Using photometry from the BRITE-Constellation space photometry mission we have confirmed the existence of tidal distortions through the presence of a heartbeat signal at periastron. We combine spectroscopic and light curve analyses to measure the masses and radii of the components, revealing �� Ori to be the most massive heartbeat system known to date. In addition, using a thorough frequency analysis, we also report the unprecedented discovery of multiple tidally induced oscillations in an O star. Stellar rotation affects the transport of chemical elements and angular momentum and is therefore a key process during stellar evolution, which is still not fully understood. This is especially true for massive stars, which are important for the chemical enrichment of the universe. It is therefore important to constrain their physical parameters and internal angular momentum distribution to calibrate stellar structure and evolution models. Stellar internal rotation can be probed through asteroseismic studies of rotationally split oscillations but such results are still quite rare, especially for stars more massive than the Sun. The SPB star HD201433 is known to be part of a single-lined spectroscopic triple system, with two low-mass companions orbiting with periods of about 3.3 and 154 d. Our results are based on photometric observations made by BRITE - Constellation and the SMEI on board the Coriolis satellite, high-resolution spectroscopy, and more than 96 years of radial velocity measurements. We identify a sequence of 9 rotationally split dipole modes in the photometric time series and establish that HD201433 is in principle a solid-body rotator with a very slow rotation period of 297+/-76 d. Tidal interaction with the inner companion has, however, significantly accelerated the spin of the surface layers by a factor of approximately one hundred. The angular momentum transfer onto the surface of HD201433 is also reflected by the statistically significant decrease of the orbital period of about 0.9 s during the last 96 years. Combining the asteroseismic inferences with the spectroscopic measurements and the orbital analysis of the inner binary system, we conclude that tidal interactions between the central SPB star and its inner companion have almost circularised the orbit but not yet aligned all spins of the system and have just begun to synchronise rotation., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the first multi-color precision light curve of the bright Wolf-Rayet binary $��^2$ Velorum, obtained over six months with the nanosatellites in the BRITE- Constellation fleet. In parallel, we obtained 488 high-resolution optical spectra of the system. In this first report on the datasets, we revise the spectroscopic orbit and report on the bulk properties of the colliding winds. We find a dependence of both the light curve and excess emission properties that scales with the inverse of the binary separation. When analyzing the spectroscopic properties in combination with the photometry, we find that the phase dependence is caused only by excess emission in the lines, and not from a changing continuum. We also detect a narrow, high-velocity absorption component from the He I $��$5876 transition, which appears twice in the orbit. We calculate smoothed-particle hydrodynamical simulations of the colliding winds and can accurately associate the absorption from He I to the leading and trailing arms of the wind shock cone passing tangentially through our line of sight. The simulations also explain the general strength and kinematics of the emission excess observed in wind lines such as C III $��$5696 of the system. These results represent the first in a series of investigations into the winds and properties of $��^2$ Velorum through multi-technique and multi-wavelength observational campaigns., 16 pages, 14 figures, additional measurements to be included in online dataset. New high-cadence observations with BRITE covering many months confirm that coupled pairs of nonradial pulsation modes are widespread among early-type Be stars. With the difference frequency between the parental variations they may form a roughly sinusoidal variability or the amplitude may cyclicly vary. A first - amplified - beat pattern is also found. In all three cases the amplitudes of difference frequencies can exceed the amplitude sum of the base frequencies, and modulations of the star-to-circumstellar-disk mass-transfer rate may be associated with these slow variations. This suggests more strongly than any earlier observations that significant dissipation of pulsational energy in the atmosphere may be a cause of mass ejections from Be stars. We report on an analysis of high-precision, multi-colour photometric observations of the rapidly-oscillating Ap (roAp) star $��$ Cir. These observations were obtained with the BRITE-Constellation, which is a coordinated mission of five nanosatellites that collects continuous millimagnitude-precision photometry of dozens of bright stars for up to 180 days at a time in two colours (Johnson B and R). BRITE stands for BRight Target Explorer. The object $��$ Cir is the brightest roAp star and an ideal target for such investigations, facilitating the determination of oscillation frequencies with high resolution. This star is bright enough for complementary interferometry and time-resolved spectroscopy. Four BRITE satellites observed $��$ Cir for 146 d or 33 rotational cycles. Phasing the photometry according to the 4.4790 d rotational period reveals qualitatively different light variations in the two photometric bands. The phased red-band photometry is in good agreement with previously-published WIRE data, showing a light curve symmetric about phase 0.5 with a strong contribution from the first harmonic. The phased blue-band data, in contrast, show an essentially sinusoidal variation. We model both light curves with Bayesian Photometric Imaging, which suggests the presence of two large-scale, photometrically bright (relative to the surrounding photosphere) spots. We also examine the high-frequency pulsation spectrum as encoded in the BRITE photometry. Our analysis establishes the stability of the main pulsation frequency over the last 20 years, confirms the presence of frequency f7, which was not detected (or the mode not excited) prior to 2006, and excludes quadrupolar modes for the main pulsation frequency., 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

This is a progress report on the ongoing project dealing with ensemble asteroseismology of B-type stars in young open clusters. The project is aimed at searches for B-type pulsating stars in open clusters, determination of atmospheric parameters for some members and seismic modeling of B-type pulsators. Some results for NGC 457, IC 1805, IC 4996, NGC 6910 and alpha Per open clusters are presented. Empirical evidence for the involvement of nonradial pulsations (NRP's) in the mass loss from Be stars ranges from (i) a singular case (\object{$��$ Cen}) of repetitive mass ejections triggered by multi-mode beating to (ii) several photometric reports about enormous numbers of pulsation modes popping up during outbursts and on to (iii) effective single-mode pulsators. The BRITE Constellation of nanosatellites was used to obtain mmag photometry of the Be stars $��$ and \object{$��$ Cen}. In the low-inclination star \object{$��$ Cen}, light pollution by variable amounts of near-stellar matter prevented any new insights into the variability and other properties of the central star. In the equator-on star \object{$��$ Cen}, BRITE photometry and {\sc Heros} echelle spectroscopy from the 1990s reveal an intricate clockwork of star-disk interactions. The mass transfer is modulated with the frequency difference of two NRP modes and an amplitude three times as large as the amplitude sum of the two NRP modes. This process feeds a high-amplitude circumstellar activity running with the incoherent and slightly lower so-called ��tefl frequency. The mass loss-modulation cycles are tightly coupled to variations in the value of the ��tefl frequency and in its amplitude, albeit with strongly drifting phase differences. The observations are well described by the decomposition of the mass loss into a pulsation-related engine in the star and a viscosity-dominated engine in the circumstellar disk. Arguments are developed that large-scale gas-circulation flows occur at the interface. The propagation rates of these eddies manifest themselves as ��tefl frequencies. Space photometry has revealed rich pulsation spectra in classical Be stars. Often frequency pairs can be found that differ by nearly the frequency of a third genuine stellar variability. The lowest currently known of these so-called difference (or $\Delta$) frequencies reach 0.03 c/d, which is the upper limit of outburst frequencies. A multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei and eclipsing variable 16 Lacertae is reported. 749 h of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with ten telescopes during 185 nights. After removing the pulsation contribution, an attempt was made to solve the resulting eclipse light curve by means of the computer program EBOP. Although a unique solution was not obtained, the range of solutions could be constrained by comparing computed positions of the secondary component in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with evolutionary tracks. For three high-amplitude pulsation modes, the uvy and the Geneva UBG amplitude ratios are derived and compared with the theoretical ones for spherical-harmonic degrees l, 18 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of a BVI variability survey in the young open cluster NGC 457 based on observations obtained during three separate runs spanning almost 20 years. In total, we found 79 variable stars, of which 66 are new. The BVI photometry was transformed to the standard system and used to derive cluster parameters by means of isochrone fitting. Using the complementary H-alpha photometry carried out in two seasons separated by over 10 years, we find that the cluster is very rich in Be stars. In total, 15 stars in the observed field of which 14 are cluster members showed H-alpha in emission either during our observations or in the past. Most of the Be stars vary in brightness on different time scales including short-period variability related most likely to g-mode pulsations. A single-epoch spectrum of NGC457-6 shows that this Be star is presently in the shell phase. The inventory of variable stars in the observed field consists of a single BCep-type star, NGC457-8, 13 Be stars, 21 slowly pulsating B stars, seven DSct stars, one GDor star, 16 unclassified periodic stars, 8 eclipsing systems and a dozen of stars with irregular variability, of which six are also B-type stars. As many as 45 variable stars are of spectral type B which is the largest number in all open clusters presented in this series of papers. The most interesting is the discovery of a large group of slowly pulsating B stars which occupy the cluster main sequence in the range between V=11 and 14.5 mag, corresponding to spectral types B3 to B8. They all have very low amplitudes and about half show pulsations with frequencies higher than 3 c/d. BRITE-Constellation (where BRITE stands for BRIght Target Explorer) is an international nanosatellite mission to monitor photometrically, in two colours, the brightness and temperature variations of stars generally brighter than mag(V) ~ 4, with precision and time coverage not possible from the ground. The current mission design consists of six nanosats (hence Constellation): two from Austria, two from Canada, and two from Poland. Each 7 kg nanosat carries an optical telescope of aperture 3 cm feeding an uncooled CCD. One instrument in each pair is equipped with a blue filter, the other with a red filter. Each BRITE instrument has a wide field of view (~24 degrees), so up to about 15 bright stars can be observed simultaneously, sampled in 32 pixel x 32 pixel sub-rasters. Photometry of additional fainter targets, with reduced precision but thorough time sampling, will be possible through onboard data processing. The BRITE sample is dominated by the most intrinsically luminous stars: massive stars seen at all evolutionary stages, and evolved medium-class stars at the very end of their nuclear burning phases. The goals of BRITE-Constellation are to (1) measure p- and g-mode pulsations to probe the interiors and ages of stars through asteroseismology; (2) look for varying spots on the stars surfaces carried across the stellar disks by rotation, which are the sources of co-rotating interaction regions in the winds of the most luminous stars, probably arising from magnetic subsurface convection; and (3) search for planetary transits., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the PASP

The All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) appeared to be extremely useful in establishing the census of bright variable stars in the sky. We present the results of a photometric variability survey in the young open cluster Stock 14 and the surrounding fields. In total, we detected 103 variable stars of which 88 are new discoveries. We confirm short-period, low-amplitude light variations in two eclipsing members of the cluster, HD 101838 and HD 101794. In addition, we find two new beta Cephei stars of which one, HD 101993, is also a member. The sample of pulsating cluster members is supplemented by one multimode slowly pulsating B-type star and several single-mode candidates of this type. The other pulsating stars in our sample are mostly field stars. In particular, we found fourteen delta Scuti stars including one gamma Dor/delta Sct hybrid pulsator. From our UBV photometry we derived new parameters of Stock 14: the mean reddening E(B-V) = 0.21 +/- 0.02 mag, the true distance modulus, 11.90 +/- 0.05 mag, and the age, 20 +/- 10 Myr. Finally, we use the new photometry to analyze changes of the 6.322-d orbital period of the bright eclipsing binary and the member of the cluster, V346 Cen. In addition to the known apsidal motion, we find that another effect, possibly light-time effect in a hierarchical system of a very long orbital period, affects these changes. The updated value of the period of apsidal motion for this system amounts to 306 +/- 4 yr. One instrument in each pair is equipped with a blue filter; the other, a red filter. The first two nanosats are UNIBRITE, designed and built by University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies - Space Flight Laboratory and its twin, BRITE-Austria, built by the Technical University Graz with support of UTIAS-SFL. Two observational campaigns were carried out during the eclipses of EE Cep in 2003 and 2008/9 to verify whether the eclipsing body in the system is indeed a dark disk and to understand the observed changes in the depth and durations of the eclipses. Multicolour photometric data and spectroscopic observations at both low and high resolution were collected. We numerically modelled the variations in brightness and colour during the eclipses. We tested models with different disk structure. We considered the possibility of disk precession. The complete set of observational data collected during the last three eclipses are made available to the astronomical community. Two blue maxima in the colour indices were detected during these two eclipses, one before and one after the photometric minimum. The first (stronger) blue maximum is simultaneous with a "bump" that is very clear in all the UBVRI light curves. Variations in the spectral line profiles seem to be recurrent during each cycle. NaI lines always show at least three absorption components during the eclipse minimum and strong absorption is superimposed on the H_alpha emission. These observations confirm that the eclipsing object in EE Cep system is indeed a dark, dusty disk around a low luminosity object. The primary appears to be a rapidly rotating Be star that is strongly darkened at the equator and brightened at the poles. Some of the conclusions of this work require verification in future studies: (i) a complex, possibly multi-ring structure of the disk in EE Cep; (ii) our explanation of the "bump" observed during the last two eclipses in terms of the different times of obscuration of the hot polar regions of the Be star by the disk; and (iii) our suggested period of the disk precession (~11-12 P_orb) and predicted depth of about 2 mag the forthcoming eclipse in 2014., Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We describe our programme to identify and analyse binary stars among the bright subdwarfs selected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) survey. Radial velocity time-series helped us identify subdwarfs with low-mass or compact stellar companions: We describe work conducted on the bright binaries GALEX J0321+4727 and GALEX J2349+3844, and we present a radial velocity study of several objects that include three new likely binaries. We present preliminary results obtained from analysis of the VI photometry of the globular cluster M79. Stellar variability survey performed with the image subtraction method yielded six new pulsating stars: two of RR Lyrae type, three SX Phoenicis stars and even one W Virginis star. We present results of a CCD variability search in the field of the young open cluster NGC 6834. We discover 15 stars to be variable in light. The brightest, a multiperiodic Gamma Doradus-type variable is a foreground star. The eight fainter ones, including a Gamma Cassiopeiae-type variable, two Lambda Eridani-type variables, an ellipsoidal variable, an EB-type eclipsing binary, and three variable stars we could not classify, all have E(B-V) within proper range, thus fulfilling the necessary condition to be members. One of the three unclassified variables may be a non-member on account of its large angular distance from the center of the cluster. Four of the six faintest variable stars, which include two eclipsing binaries and two very red stars showing year-to-year variations, are certain non-members. One of the remaining two faintest variable stars, an EA-type eclipsing binary may be a member, while the faintest one, a W Ursae Majoris-type variable, is probably a non-member. For 6937 stars we provide the V magnitudes and (V-I)_C color indices on the standard system. Because of nonuniform reddening over the cluster's face, a direct comparison of these data with theoretical isochrones is not possible. We therefore obtain E(B-V) from available UBV photometry, determine the lower and upper bound of E(B-V) for NGC 6834, and then fit properly reddened Padova isochrones to the data. Assuming HDE 332843, an early-F supergiant, to be a member we get log (age/yr) = 7.70, V_0 - M_V = 12.10 mag. For 103 brightest stars in our field we obtained the alpha index, a measure of the equivalent widths of the Halpha line. We find Halpha emission in five stars, including the Gamma Cas-type variable and the two Lambda Eri-type variables., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

We present the catalog of 947 variable stars located in the field of view of the Kepler satellite. The catalog is a result of the analysis of VI photometry obtained during the first 17-month observations in the ASAS3-North station. The variable stars we present are divided into eleven groups according to the presented variability; the groups are briefly discussed. To improve our comprehension of the beta Cephei stars, we set up a photometric multi-site campaign on the open cluster NGC 884 (Chi Persei). Thirteen telescopes joined the 2005-2007 campaign which resulted in almost 78000 CCD frames. We present an up-to-date status of the analysis of these data, in which several interesting oscillating stars are pointed out. We analysed ASAS-3 photometry of bright early-type stars with the goal of finding new Beta Cephei stars. We were particularly interested in stars that would be good for seismic analysis, i.e., stars that (i) have a large number of excited modes, (ii) show rotationally split modes, (iii) are components of eclipsing binary systems, (iv) have low-frequency modes, that is, are hybrid Beta Cephei/SPB stars. Our study was made with a homogeneous sample of over 4100 stars having MK spectral type B5 or earlier. For these stars, the ASAS-3 photometry was analysed by means of a Fourier periodogram. We have discovered 103 Beta Cephei stars, nearly doubling the number of previously known stars of this type. Among these stars, four are components of eclipsing binaries, seven have modes equidistant or nearly equidistant in frequency. In addition, we found five Beta Cephei stars that show low-frequency periodic variations, very likely due to pulsations. We therefore regard them as candidate hybrid Beta Cephei/SPB pulsators. All these stars are potentially very useful for seismic modeling. We verify the nature of emission-line stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 6910. % Spectroscopy in the H-alpha region was obtained. Raw CCD frames of spectra of all stars fainter than V = 9 mag observed by us are significantly affected by nebular emission originating in the surrounding HII region IC 1318. After careful data reduction and subtraction of the nebular radiation we succeeded in obtaining reliable stellar spectra. We confirm that the star NGC 6910 37 is a Be star, and we have corrected the classification of V1973 Cyg from an Ae star to a normal A type star. Since the diffuse interstellar bands do not appear in the spectrum of this star while being present in the other stars we observed, we confirm that V1973 Cyg is a foreground object with respect to IC 1318 and NGC 6910. We also find that the H-alpha line in HD 194279 has a P Cygni profile and the H-alpha line profile is variable in HD 229196., Comment: accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the analysis of simultaneous multicolour $uvyI_{\rm C}$ photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy for the rapidly rotating $��$ Cephei star SY Equ. From the photometric time series, we confirm the dominant pulsation frequency, $f_1$ = 6.029 d$^{-1}$, and we find an evidence for two additional modes. In spectroscopy, the highest peak occurs at $f_{\rm a}$ = 0.197 d$^{-1}$ or its alias 0.803 d$^{-1}$. It can be interpreted either in terms of a binary motion or as the $g$-mode pulsation. In addition, we reveal the pulsation mode with frequency of about 6.029 d$^{-1}$, i.e. the same which dominates photometric variations, and a few new candidates. For the dominant frequency we obtain mode identification from the combined photometric and spectroscopic observations. From non-adiabatic pulsation calculations, we show that the frequency of the dominant mode in SY Equ is consistent with the stellar models of much lower effective temperatures than used in many papers., SOHO 18/GONG 2006/HELAS I Conference, Sheffield, 7-11 August 2006

We present results of the multicolour UBVR photometry of the high-amplitude EC14026-type star, Balloon 090100001. The data span over a month and consist of more than a hundred hours of observations. Fourier analysis of these data led us to the detection of at least 30 modes of pulsation of which 22 are independent. The frequencies of 13 detected modes group in three narrow ranges, around 2.8, 3.8 and 4.7 mHz, where the radial fundamental mode, the first and second overtones are likely to occur. Surprisingly, we also detect 9 independent modes in the low-frequency domain, between 0.15 and 0.4 mHz. These modes are typical for pulsations found in PG1716+426-type stars, discovered recently among cool B-type subdwarfs. The modes found in these stars are attributed to the high-order g modes. As both kinds of pulsations are observed in Balloon 090100001, it represents a link between the two classes of pulsating hot subdwarfs. At present, it is probably the most suitable target for testing evolutionary scenarios and internal constitution models of these stars by means of asteroseismology. Three of the modes we discovered form an equidistant frequency triplet which can be explained by invoking rotational splitting of an $\ell$ = 1 mode. This is a progress report of the study of pulsating main-sequence stars in the LMC. Using the OGLE-II photometry supplemented by the MACHO photometry, we find 64 Beta Cephei stars in the LMC. Their periods are generally much longer than observed in stars of this type in the Galaxy (the median value is 0.27 d compared with 0.17 d in the Galaxy). In 20 stars with short periods attributable to the Beta Cephei-type instability, we also find modes with periods longer than 0.4 d. They are likely low-order g modes, which means that in these stars both kinds of variability, Beta Cephei and SPB, are observed. Results of a search for variable stars in the central region of the globular cluster M13 are presented. Prior to this study, 36 variable and suspected variable stars were known in this cluster (Osborn 2000; Clement et al. 2001). Of these stars, five were not observed by us. We find v3, v4, v10, v12, and v13 to be constant in light. Surprisingly, only two out of the ten variable star candidates of Kadla et al. (1980) appear to be variable. Both are RRc variables. Additionally, three RR Lyrae stars and one SX Phoenicis variable are discovered. Three close frequencies are detected for an RRc star v36. It appears that this variable is another multi-periodic RR Lyrae star pulsating in non-radial modes. Light curves of the three known BL Herculis stars and all known RR Lyrae stars are presented. The total number of known RR Lyrae stars in M13 is now nine. Only one is an RRab star. The mean period of RRc variables amounts to 0.36 +/- 0.05 d, suggesting that M13 should be included in the group of Oosterhoff type II globular clusters. Mean V magnitudes and ranges of variation are derived for seven RR Lyrae and three BL Herculis variables. Almost all observed bright giants show some degree of variability.
