We have investigated the nonreciprocal electrical transport, that is a nonlinear resistance effect depending on the current direction, in multiferroic Rashba semiconductor (Ge,Mn)Te. Due to coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders, (Ge,Mn)Te provides a unique platform for exploring the nonreciprocal electrical transport in a bulk form. (Ge,Mn)Te thin films shows a large nonreciprocal resistance compared to GeTe, the nonmagnetic counterpart with the same crystal structure. The magnetic-field-angle dependence of the nonreciprocal resistance is maximized when magnetic field is orthogonal to both current and electric polarization, in accord with the symmetry argument. From the analysis of temperature and magnetic field dependence, we deduce that inelastic scatterings of electrons mediated by magnons dominantly contribute to the observed nonreciprocal response. Furthermore, the nonreciprocal resistance is significantly enhanced by lowering hole density. The Fermi level dependence is attributed to the deformation of the Rashba band in which the spin-momentum locked single Fermi surface appears by exchange field from the in-plane magnetization. The present study provides a key insight to the mechanisms of novel transport phenomena caused by the interplay of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders in a semiconductor.

We report experimental signatures of topological transitions among the Weyl semimetal states of pyrochlore Pr2Ir2O7, where the Kondo coupling between the Ir topological electrons and the spin-ice like orders of Pr moments plays a decisive role. The magnetic-field dependence of resistivity and the Hall conductivity exhibits a plateau and a sharp jump associated with a magnetic-field hysteresis, similar to a liquid-gas-like transition in dipolar spin ice system. Furthermore, the Kondo coupling is controlled by the hydrostatic pressure, revealing that the field-induced displacement of Weyl points in the momentum space strongly depends on the respective electronic state as well as on the Kondo coupling strength. These observations pave a route toward the engineering of band topology in hybrid quantum materials with relativistic conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments.

We report a current scaling study of a quantum phase transition between a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a trivial insulator on the surface of a heterostructure film of magnetic topological insulators. The transition was observed by tilting the magnetization while measuring the Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}$. The transition curves of $\sigma_{xy}$ taken under various excitation currents cross each other at a single point, exemplifying a quantum critical behavior of the transition. The slopes of the transition curves follow a power law dependence of the excitation current, giving a scaling exponent. Combining with the result of the previous temperature scaling study, critical exponents $\nu$ for the localization length and $p$ for the coherence length are separately evaluated as $\nu$ = 2.8 $\pm$ 0.3 and $p$ = 3.3 $\pm$ 0.3., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Gigantic magnetoresistance is shown in a Cr- and V-doped topological insulator multilayer, assuring robust axion insulator., Exploration of novel electromagnetic phenomena is a subject of great interest in topological quantum materials. One of the unprecedented effects to be experimentally verified is the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect originating from an unusual coupling of electric and magnetic fields in materials. A magnetic heterostructure of topological insulator (TI) hosts such exotic magnetoelectric coupling and can be expected to realize the TME effect as an axion insulator. We designed a magnetic TI with a tricolor structure where a nonmagnetic layer of (Bi, Sb)2Te3 is sandwiched by a soft ferromagnetic Cr-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3 and a hard ferromagnetic V-doped (Bi, Sb)2Te3. Accompanied by the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, we observe zero Hall conductivity plateaus, which are a hallmark of the axion insulator state, in a wide range of magnetic fields between the coercive fields of Cr- and V-doped layers. The resistance of the axion insulator state reaches as high as 109 ohms, leading to a gigantic magnetoresistance ratio exceeding 10,000,000% upon the transition from the QAH state. The tricolor structure of the TI may not only be an ideal arena for the topologically distinct phenomena but can also provide magnetoresistive applications for advancing dissipation-less topological electronics.

Massless Dirac electrons in condensed matter have attracted considerable attention. Unlike conventional electrons, Dirac electrons are described in the form of two-component wave functions. In the surface state of topological insulators, these two components are associated with the spin degrees of freedom, hence governing the magnetic properties. Therefore, the observation of the two-component wave function provides a useful clue for exploring the novel spin phenomena. Here we show that the two-component nature is manifested in the Landau levels (LLs) whose degeneracy is lifted by a Coulomb potential. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we visualize energy and spatial structures of LLs in a topological insulator Bi2Se3. The observed potential-induced LL splitting and internal structures of Landau orbits are distinct from those in a conventional electron system and are well reproduced by a two-component model Dirac Hamiltonian. Our model further predicts non-trivial energy-dependent spin-magnetization textures in a potential variation. We study dynamic polarization and resistive detection of nuclear spins in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) under the Kondo effect regime. We find that the differential conductance spectra of the QD exhibit hysteresis under the Kondo effect regime in magnetic fields. Relevance of nuclear spins to the hysteresis is confirmed by the detection of nuclear magnetic resonance signals by monitoring the differential conductance. We attribute the origin of the hysteresis to the dynamic nuclear spin polarization (DNP) induced in the QD. We studied spatial distribution of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in a Hall-bar device in a breakdown regime of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). We detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals from the polarized nuclear spins by measuring the Hall voltage $V_{xy}$ using three pairs of voltage probes attached to the conducting channel of the Hall bar. We find that the amplitude of the NMR signal depends on the position of the Hall voltage probes and that the largest NMR signal is obtained from the pair of probes farthest from the electron-injecting electrode. Combined with results on pump-and-probe measurements, we conclude that the DNP induced by QHE breakdown develops along the electron-drift direction., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRB

We show electrical coherent manipulation of quadrupole-split nuclear spin states in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure on the basis of the breakdown of quantum Hall effect. The electric quadrupole splitting in nuclear spin energy levels is intentionally enhanced by applying an external stress to the heterostructure. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra with clearly separated triple peaks are obtained, and Rabi oscillations are observed between the nuclear spin energy levels. Electrical polarization of nuclear spins is studied in a Corbino disk under a breakdown regime of the quantum Hall effect (QHE). Since the edge channels are completely absent in the Corbino disk, we conclude that the electric current flowing in the bulk channel of a quantum Hall conductor is relevant to dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). A pump and probe measurement demonstrates that DNP emerges near the critical voltage of the QHE breakdown. The agreement of the onset voltage of DNP with that of the QHE breakdown indicates that the underlying origin of DNP is closely related to that of the QHE breakdown., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

Nuclear spins are polarized electrically in a breakdown regime of an odd-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE). Electron excitation to the upper Landau subband with the opposite spin polarity flips nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction. The polarized nuclear spins reduce the spin-splitting energy and accelerate the QHE breakdown. Using a laterally-fabricated quantum-dot (QD) spin-valve device, we experimentally study the Kondo effect in the electron transport through a semiconductor QD with an odd number of electrons (N). In a parallel magnetic configuration of the ferromagnetic electrodes, the Kondo resonance at N = 3 splits clearly without external magnetic fields. With applying magnetic fields (B), the splitting is gradually reduced, and then the Kondo effect is almost restored at B = 1.2 T. This means that, in the Kondo regime, an inverse effective magnetic field of B ~ 1.2 T can be applied to the QD in the parallel magnetic configuration of the ferromagnetic electrodes., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have developed a method for electrical polarization of nuclear spins in quantum Hall systems. In a breakdown regime of odd-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), excitation of electrons to the upper Landau subband with opposite spin polarity dynamically polarizes nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction. The understanding of the zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the tunnelling spectra of S/N junctions involving d-wave cuprate superconductors has been important in the determination of the phase structure of the superconducting order parameter. In this context, the involvement of a p-wave superconductor such as Sr2RuO4 in tunnelling studies is indeed of great importance. We have recently succeeded in fabricating devices that enable S/N junctions forming at interfaces between Sr2RuO4 and Ru micro-inclusions in eutectic crystals to be investigated.3 We have observed a ZBCP and have interpreted it as due to the Andreev bound state, commonly seen in unconventional superconductors. Also we have proposed that the onset of the ZBCP may be used to delineate the phase boundary for the onset of a time reversal symmetry broken (TRSB) state within the superconducting state, which does not always coincide with the onset of the superconducting state. However, these measurements always involved two interfaces between Sr2RuO4 and Ru. In the present study, we have extended the previous measurements to obtain a deeper insight into the properties of a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Ru., Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn.
