The $e$MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey ($e$MERGE) is an ambitious, multi-tiered extragalactic radio continuum survey being carried out with $e$MERLIN and the VLA at 1.4GHz and 6GHz. Exploiting the unique combination of high sensitivity and high angular resolution provided by radio interferometry, these observations will provide a powerful, obscuration-independent tool for tracing intense star-formation and AGN activity in galaxies out to $z\sim5$. In our first data release (DR1) we present $e$MERGE Tier 1, a 15-arcmin pointing centred on the GOODS-N field, imaged at 1.4GHz with the VLA and $e$MERLIN at $\sim 0.28''$ resolution down to an rms sensitivity of $\sim 1.2\,��$Jy beam$^{-1}$. This unique radio survey -- unrivaled at 1.4GHz in its combination of depth, areal coverage and angular resolution in the pre-SKA era -- allows us to localise and separate extended star-forming regions, nuclear starbursts and compact AGN core/jet systems in galaxies over the past two-thirds of cosmic history, a crucial step in tracing the apparently simultaneous growths of the stellar populations and central black holes in massive galaxies. In these proceedings we highlight some early science results from $e$MERGE DR1, including some examples of the sub-arcsecond morphologies and cold dust properties of 1.4GHz-selected galaxies. $e$MERGE Tier 1 will eventually reach sub-$��$Jy beam$^{-1}$ sensitivity at $0.28''$ resolution over a 30-arcmin field, providing crucial benchmarks for deep extragalactic surveys which will be undertaken with SKA in the next decade., 6 Pages, 3 figures, published in proceedings from the 14th European VLBI Network Symposium and Users Meeting

We report on the largest Swift AGN monitoring program, concerning UV/optical variability in Seyferts. From 554 observations, over a 750d period, of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548, we see (McHardy et al. 2014) a good overall correlation between the X-ray and UV/optical bands,particularly on short timescales (tens of days). The UVOT bands are found to lag behind X-rays with a lag scaling as wavelength to the power 1.23 +/- 0.31, in excellent agreement with that expected (1.33) if UV/optical variability arises from reprocessing of X-rays by the accretion disc. However, the observed lags are ~3 times longer than expected from a standard Shakura-Sunyaev disc, raising real concerns about the detailed validity of this model. The results can be explained with a slightly larger mass and accretion rate, and a hotter disc, or if the disc is clumpy, thereby enhancing the emission from the outer regions., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, to appear in "Swift: 10 years of discovery", Proceedings of Science

We present an X-ray time lag analysis, as a function of Fourier frequency, for MCG-6-30-15 and Mrk 766 using long term XMM-Newton light curves in the 0.5-1.5 keV and the 2-4 keV energy bands, together with some physical modelling of the corresponding time lag spectra. Both the time lag spectra of MCG-6-30-15 and Mrk 766 show negative values (i.e. soft band variations lag behind the corresponding hard band variations) at high frequencies, around 0.001 Hz, similar to those previously observed from 1H 0707-495. The remarkable morphological resemblance between the time lag spectra of MCG-6-30-15 and Mrk 766 indicate that the physical processes responsible for the observed soft time delays is very similar in the two sources, favouring a reflection scenario from material situated very nearby to the central black hole., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters. In this paper we examine the contribution of galaxies with different infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to the comoving infrared luminosity density, a proxy for the comoving star formation rate (SFR) density. We characterise galaxies as having either a cold or hot IR SED depending upon whether the rest-frame wavelength of their peak IR energy output is above or below 90um. Our work is based on a far-IR selected sample both in the local Universe and at high redshift, the former consisting of IRAS 60um-selected galaxies at z, 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Over the last 12 years, AGN monitoring by RXTE, has revolutionised our understanding of the X-ray variability of AGN, of the relationship between AGN and Galactic black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) and hence of the accretion process itself, which fuels the emission in AGN and BHBs and is the major source of power in the universe. In this paper I review our current understanding of these topics. I begin by considering whether AGN and BHBs show the same X-ray spectral-timing `states' (e.g. low-flux, hard-spectrum or `hard' and high-flux, soft-spectrum or `soft'). Observational selection effects mean that most of the AGN which we have monitored will probably be `soft state' objects, but AGN are found in the other BHB states, although possibly with different critical transition accretion rates. I examine timescale scaling relationships between AGN and BHBs. I show that characteristic power spectral `bend' timescales, T_B, scale approximately with black hole mass, M_BH, but inversely with accretion rate, mdot_E, (in units of the Eddington accretion rate) probably signifying that T_B, arises at the inner edge of the accretion disc. The relationship T_B proportional to M_BH/mdot_E is a good fit, implying that no other potential variable, e.g. black hole spin, varies significantly. We present the results of a deep 610 MHz survey of the 1^H XMM/Chandra survey area with the GMRT. The resulting maps have a resolution of ~7 arcsec and an rms noise limit of 60 microJy. To a 5 sigma detection limit of 300 microJy we detect 223 sources within a survey area of diameter 64 arcmin. We compute the 610 MHz source counts and compare them to those measured at other radio wavelengths. The well know flattening of the Euclidean-normalised 1.4 GHz source counts below ~2 mJy, usually explained by a population of starburst galaxies undergoing luminosity evolution, is seen at 610 MHz. The 610 MHz source counts can be modelled by the same populations that explain the 1.4 GHz source counts, assuming a spectral index of -0.7 for the starburst galaxies and the steep spectrum AGN population. We find a similar dependence of luminosity evolution on redshift for the starburst galaxies at 610 MHz as is found at 1.4 GHz (i.e. 'Q'= 2.45 (+0.3,-0.4))., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present an analysis of the submillimetre/X-ray properties of 19 X-ray absorbed, Compton-thin quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) selected to have luminosities and redshifts which represent the peak of cosmic QSO activity. i.e. ~L* objects at 11.5, the high star formation rates are consistent with a scenario in which the QSOs evolve to become local luminous elliptical galaxies. Combining these results with previously published data for X-ray unabsorbed QSOs and submillimetre-selected galaxies we propose the following evolutionary sequence: the forming galaxy is initially far-infrared luminous but X-ray weak similar to the sources discovered by the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array; as the black hole and spheroid grow with time a point is reached when the central QSO becomes powerful enough to terminate the star formation and eject the bulk of the fuel supply (the Compton-thin absorbed QSO phase); this transition is followed by a period of unobscured QSO activity which subsequently declines to leave a quiescent spheroidal galaxy., Comment: MNRAS in press, 9 pages, 4 figs

We present a detailed study of the long-timescale X-ray variability of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy MCG-6-30-15, based on 8 years of frequent observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Combined with short timescale XMM-Newton observations, we derive the powerspectral density (PSD) covering 6 decades from ~10^{-8} to ~10^{-2} Hz. As with NGC4051, another NLS1, the PSD of MCG-6-30-15 is a close analogue of the PSD of a Galactic Black Hole X-ray binary system (GBH) in a `high' rather than a `low' state. Like high state GBHs, its PSD is better fitted by a smoothly bending rather than sharply breaking powerlaw model and the break frequency is 7.6^{+10}_{-3} x 10^{-5} Hz. Assuming linear scaling of break frequency with mass, we estimate the black hole (BH) mass in MCG-6-30-15 to be ~2.9^{+1.8}_{-1.6} X 10^{6} solar masses. We also derive the BH mass using a variety of new optical observations and find a value between 3.6 and 6 x 10^{6} solar masses, consistent with the mass derived from the PSD. Combining these data with revised reverberation masses for other AGN we update the BH mass/break timescale diagram. The observations are consistent with NLS1s having shorter break timescales, for a given mass, than broad line AGN, probably reflecting a higher accretion rate. However the data are also consistent with all of the X-ray bright AGN being high state objects. This result may simply be a selection effect, based on their selection from X-ray all sky catalogues, and their consequent typically high X-ray/radio ratios, which indicate high state systems., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures. In order to determine the relationship between the faint X-ray and faint radio source populations, and hence to help understand the X-ray and radio emission mechanisms in those faint source populations, we have made a deep 1.4GHz Very Large Array radio survey of the 13h +38deg XMM/ROSAT X-ray Survey Area. From a combined data set of 10hours B configuration data and 14hours A configuration data, maps with 3.35'' resolution and a noise limit of 7.5uJy were constructed. A complete sample of 449 sources was detected within a 30' diameter region above a 4sigma detection limit of 30uJy, at the map centre, making this one of the deepest radio surveys at this frequency. The differential source count shows a significant upturn at sub-milliJansky flux densities, similar to that seen in other deep surveys at 1.4GHz (eg the Phoenix survey), but larger than that seen in the HDF which may have been selected to be under-dense. This upturn is well modelled by the emergence of a population of medium redshift starforming galaxies which dominate at faint flux densities. We present results from RXTE data obtained during a systematic monitoring program of four Seyfert galaxies (NGC5548, NGC5506, MCG-6-30-15 and NGC4051). We studied the variability of three hardness ratios derived from the light curves in four energy bands. All the objects show similar spectral variations in all ratios. In order to interpret the results we computed the hardness ratios corresponding to a simple spectral model of a power law plus iron line plus reflection component, considering two possibilities: a)variations with constant line equivalent width and reflection parameter R and b) variations with constant line and reflection flux. The overall, mean observed trends can be explained by spectral slope variations and a constant flux Fe line and reflection component, although the existence of a line component which is variable on short time scales cannot be excluded. Finally, we find that the data are not consistent with an increase of R with flux for individual sources, indicating that, as a single source varies, softer spectra do not correspond to larger R values., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of a narrow-line QSO (NLQSO) RX J1334.2+3759 with a steep soft X-ray spectrum. Soft X-ray emission from the NLQSO is highly variable. Changes in the intensity by a factor of about 2 have been detected in the ROSAT PSPC observations of RX J1334.2+3759 on time scales of 20000-40000s. Rapid variability events have also been observed from RX J1334.2+3759. The most extreme variable event has Delta L/Delta t = (1.95+/-1.02)E42 erg/s/s corresponding to a change in intensity by a factor of about 4 within 400s. The PSPC spectra of the NLQSO can be well represented by a power-law of photon index 3.8, modified by an absorbing column local to the source over and above that due to our own Galaxy. The intrinsic soft X-ray luminosity of RX J1334.2+3759 is estimated to be 2.2E44 erg/s in the energy band of 0.1-2.0 keV. The optical spectrum of RX J1334.2+3759 is typical of the NLS1 galaxies showing strong Balmer Hbeta, Halpha, and forbidden line [O III]5007. Fe II multiplets, usually present in the optical spectra of NLS1 galaxies, are also detected from RX J1334.2+3759. Decomposition of the Hbeta and Halpha line profiles shows the presence of narrow (FWHM = 880 km/s) and broad (FWHM = 2850 km/s) components in the spectrum of RX J1334.2+3759. The narrow-line region of RX J1334.2+3759 appears to be significantly different from those of normal Seyfert galaxies. A possible explanation for the observed properties of the narrow line region and the broad line region is suggested in terms of density enhancements., Comment: 13 pages with 9 figures, LaTex. We present timing and spectral analysis of the data collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite (EUVE) for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 during 1996. NGC 4051 was observed twice in May 1996 and again in December 1996 for a total of more than 200 ks. The observations were always simultaneous with hard X-ray observations conducted with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The EUVE light curves are extremely variable during each observation, with the maximum variability of more than a factor of 15 from peak to minimum. We detected signal in the EUVE spectrograph in the 75-100 A range which is well fitted by absorbed power law models.
