We provide an Emergent Universe picture in which the fine-tuning on the initial conditions is replaced by cut-off physics, implemented on a semiclassical level when referred to the Universe dynamics and on a purely quantum level for the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field. The adopted cut-off physics is inspired by Polymer Quantum Mechanics but expanded in the limit of a small lattice step. On a quasi-classical level, this results in modified Poisson Brackets for the Hamiltonian Universe dynamics similar to a Generalized Uncertainty Principle algebra. The resulting Universe is indeed asymptotically Einstein-static, emerging from a finite volume configuration in the distant past and then properly reconnecting with the most relevant Universe phases. The calculation of the modifications of the primordial inflaton spectrum is then performed by treating new physics as a small correction on the standard Hamiltonian of each Fourier mode of the field. The merit of this study is to provide a new paradigm for a non-singular Emergent Universe, which is associated with a precise fingerprint on the temperature distribution of the microwave background, in principle observable by future experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The cosmological constant $Λ$ and cold dark matter (CDM) model ($Λ\text{CDM}$) is one of the pillars of modern cosmology and is widely used as the de facto theoretical model by current and forthcoming surveys. As the nature of dark energy is very elusive, in order to avoid the problem of model bias, here we present a novel null test at the perturbation level that uses the growth of matter perturbation data in order to assess the concordance model. We analyze how accurate this null test can be reconstructed by using data from forthcoming surveys creating mock catalogs based on $Λ\text{CDM}$ and three models that display a different evolution of the matter perturbations, namely a dark energy model with constant equation of state $w$ ($w$CDM), the Hu \& Sawicki and designer $f(R)$ models, and we reconstruct them with a machine learning technique known as the Genetic Algorithms. We show that with future LSST-like mock data our consistency test will be able to rule out these viable cosmological models at more than 5$σ$, help to check for tensions in the data and alleviate the existing tension of the amplitude of matter fluctuations $S_8=σ_8\left(Ω_m/0.3\right)^{0.5}$., 9 pages, 4 figures. In the current 3nu paradigm, flavor oscillations probe 3 mixing angles (theta_12, theta_23, theta_13), one CP phase delta, and two squared mass differences delta m^2>0 and Delta m^2, where sign(Delta m^2)=+ (-) for normal (inverted) ordering. Absolute nu masses can be probed by the effective m_beta in beta decay, by the total mass Sigma in cosmology and, if neutrinos are Majorana, by another effective m_{beta beta} in 0nu2beta decay. Within an updated global analysis of (non)oscillation data, we constrain these 3nu parameters, both separately and in selected pairs, and highlight the concordance or discordance among different constraints. Five oscillation parameters (delta m^2, Delta m^2, theta_12, theta_23, theta_13) are consistently measured, with an overall accuracy ranging from ~1% for Delta m^2 to ~6% for sin^2(theta_23) (due to its octant ambiguity). The current cosmological probes have provided a fantastic confirmation of the standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model, that has been constrained with unprecedented accuracy. However, with the increase of the experimental sensitivity a few statistically significant tensions between different independent cosmological datasets emerged. While these tensions can be in portion the result of systematic errors, the persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the need for new physics. In this Letter of Interest we will focus on the $4.4\sigma$ tension between the Planck estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we will list a few interesting new physics models that could solve this tension and discuss how the next decade experiments will be crucial., Comment: Snowmass2021 - Letter of Interest

The standard $��$ Cold Dark Matter cosmological model provides a wonderful fit to current cosmological data, but a few tensions and anomalies became statistically significant with the latest data analyses. While these anomalies could be due to the presence of systematic errors in the experiments, they could also indicate the need for new physics beyond the standard model. In this Letter of Interest we focus on the tension of the Planck data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $��_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($��_8,f��_8$). We list a few interesting models for solving this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit with a single model a full array of data and not just one parameter at a time., Snowmass2021 - Letter of Interest

The precise measurements of Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy angular power spectra made by the Planck satellite show an anomalous value for the lensing amplitude, defined by the parameter $A_{lens}$, at more than $2$ standard deviations. In this paper, after discussing the current status of the anomaly, we quantify the potential of future CMB measurements in confirming/falsifying the $A_{lens}$ tension. We find that a space-based experiment as LiteBIRD could falsify the current $A_{lens}$ tension at the level of $5$ standard deviations. Similar constraints can be achieved by a Stage-III experiment assuming an external prior on the reionization optical depth of $��=0.055\pm0.010$ as already provided by the Planck satellite. A Stage-IV experiment could further test the $A_{lens}$ tension at the level of $10$ standard deviations. A comparison between temperature and polarization measurements made at different frequencies could further identify possible systematics responsible for $A_{lens}>1$. We show that, in the case of the CMB-S4 experiment, polarization data alone will have the potential of falsifying the current $A_{lens}$ anomaly at more than five standard deviation and to strongly bound its frequency dependence. We discuss the implications of a PIXIE-like experiment, which would measure $��$-type spectral distortions of the CMB at a level of $��_��=(1/n)\times 10^{-8}$, with $n\geq1$ representing an improved sensitivity (e.g. $n=10$ corresponds to PRISM). Using Planck data and considering the six-parameter $��$CDM model, we compute the posterior for $��_8\equiv��\times 10^{8}$ and find $��_8=1.57^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$ ($68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$). This becomes $��_{8} = 1.28^{+0.30}_{-0.52}$ ($68\%\,\mathrm{CL}$) when the running $��_\mathrm{s}$ of the spectral index is included. We point out that a sensitivity of about $3\times$ PIXIE implies a guaranteed discovery: $��$-distortion is detected or $��_\mathrm{s}\geq 0$ is excluded (both at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$ or higher). This threshold sensitivity sets a clear benchmark for CMB spectrometry. For a combined analysis of PIXIE and current Planck data, we discuss the improvement on measurements of the tilt $n_\mathrm{s}$ and the running $��_\mathrm{s}$ and the dependence on the choice of the pivot. A fiducial running of $��_\mathrm{s}=-0.01$ (close to the Planck best-fit) leads to a detection of negative running at $2��$ for $5\times$ PIXIE. A fiducial running of $��_\mathrm{s}=-0.02$, still compatible with Planck, requires $3\times$ PIXIE to rule out $��_\mathrm{s} = 0$ (at $95\%\,\mathrm{CL}$). Cosmological constraints are usually derived under the assumption of a $6$ parameters $��$-CDM theoretical framework or simple one-parameter extensions. In this paper we present, for the first time, cosmological constraints in a significantly extended scenario, varying up to $12$ cosmological parameters simultaneously, including the sum of neutrino masses, the neutrino effective number, the dark energy equation of state, the gravitational waves background and the running of the spectral index of primordial perturbations. Using the latest Planck 2015 data release (with polarization) we found no significant indication for extensions to the standard $��$-CDM scenario, with the notable exception of the angular power spectrum lensing amplitude, $A_{\rm lens}$ that is larger than the expected value at more than two standard deviations even when combining the Planck data with BAO and supernovae type Ia external datasets. In our extended cosmological framework, we find that a combined Planck+BAO analysis constrains the value of the r.m.s. density fluctuation parameter to $��_8=0.781_{-0.063}^{+0.065}$ at $95 \%$ c.l., helping to relieve the possible tensions with the CFHTlenS cosmic shear survey. We also find a lower value for the reionization optical depth $��=0.058_{-0.043}^{+0.040}$ at $95$ \% c.l. respect to the one derived under the assumption of $��$-CDM. The scalar spectral index $n_S$ is now compatible with a Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum to within $2.5$ standard deviations. Combining the Planck dataset with the HST prior on the Hubble constant provides a value for the equation of state $w < -1$ at more than two standard deviations while the neutrino effective number is fully compatible with the expectations of the standard three neutrino framework., 5 pages, 2 figures, 12 parameters. We perform a joint analysis of current data from cosmology and laboratory experiments to constrain the neutrino mass parameters in the framework of bayesian statistics, also accounting for uncertainties in nuclear modeling, relevant for neutrinoless double $��$ decay ($0\nu2��$) searches. We find that a combination of current oscillation, cosmological and $0\nu2��$ data constrains $m_{����}~, v2: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; added definition of parameter minimal value from oscillation measurements; corrected confidence interval, that in v1 were reported at 90% C.L. and misidentified as 95% C.L.; accepted for publication

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT) have recently provided new and precise measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy damping tail. This region of the CMB angular spectra, thanks to the angular distortions produced by gravitational lensing, can probe the growth of matter perturbations and provide a test for general relativity. Here we make use of the ACT and SPT power spectrum measurements (combined with the recent WMAP9 data) to constrain f(R) gravity theories. Adopting a parametrized approach, we obtain an upper limit on the lengthscale of the theory of B_0 < 0.86 at 95% c.l. from ACT, while we get a significantly stronger bound from SPT with B_0 < 0.14 at 95% c.l.., 6 pages, 4 figures, some sentences corrected

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT) have recently provided new, very precise measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy damping tail. The values of the cosmological parameters inferred from these measurements, while broadly consistent with the expectations of the standard cosmological model, are providing interesting possible indications for new physics that are definitely worth of investigation. The ACT results, while compatible with the standard expectation of three neutrino families, indicate a level of CMB lensing, parametrized by the lensing amplitude parameter A_L, that is about 70% higher than expected. If not a systematic, this anomalous lensing amplitude could be produced by modifications of general relativity or coupled dark energy. Vice-versa, the SPT experiment, while compatible with a standard level of CMB lensing, prefers an excess of dark radiation, parametrized by the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom N_eff. Here we perform a new analysis of these experiments allowing simultaneous variations in both these, non-standard, parameters. We also combine these experiments, for the first time in the literature, with the recent WMAP9 data, one at a time. Including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) prior on the Hubble constant and information from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) surveys provides the following constraints from ACT: N_eff=3.23\pm0.47, A_L=1.65\pm0.33 at 68% c.l., while for SPT we have N_eff=3.76\pm0.34, A_L=0.81\pm0.12 at 68% c.l.. Recent analyses that include cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy measurements from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the South Pole Telescope have hinted at the presence of a dark radiation component at more than two standard deviations. However, this result depends sensitively on the assumption of an HST prior on the Hubble constant, where $H_0=73.8\pm2.4$ km/s/Mpc at 68% c.l.. From a median statistics (MS) analysis of 537 non-CMB $H_0$ measurements from Huchra's compilation we derive $H_0=68 \pm2.8$ km/s/Mpc at 68% c.l., in good agreement with the results of a recent analysis of the full Huchra list of $H_0$ measurements. This result is also fully consistent with the value of $H_0=69.7\pm2.5$ km/s/Mpc at 68% c.l. obtained from CMB measurements under assumption of the standard $\Lambda$CDM model. We show that with the MS $H_0$ prior the evidence for dark radiation is weakened to $\sim 1.2$ standard deviations. Parametrizing the dark radiation component through the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom $N_{eff}$, we find $N_{eff}=3.98\pm0.37$ at 68% c.l. with the HST prior and $N_{eff}=3.52\pm0.39$ at 68% c.l. with the MS prior. Recent results from short--baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy measurements suggest the presence of additional sterile neutrinos. In this paper we properly combine these data sets to derive bounds on the sterile neutrino masses in the 3+1 and 3+2 frameworks, finding a potentially good agreement between the two datasets. However, when galaxy clustering is included in the analysis a tension between the oscillation and cosmological data is clearly present.

While the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is nowadays well measured by cosmological observations, the bounds on the lepton asymmetry in the form of neutrinos are still significantly weaker. We place limits on the relic neutrino asymmetries using some of the latest cosmological data, taking into account the effect of flavor oscillations. We present our results for two different values of the neutrino mixing angle ��_{13}, and show that for large ��_{13} the limits on the total neutrino asymmetry become more stringent, diluting even large initial flavor asymmetries. In particular, we find that the present bounds are still dominated by the limits coming from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, while the limits on the total neutrino mass from cosmological data are essentially independent of ��_{13}. Finally, we perform a forecast for COrE, taken as an example of a future CMB experiment, and find that it could improve the limits on the total lepton asymmetry approximately by up to a factor 6.6., 11 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v2: updated COrE specifications. v3: matches Phys. Combined analyses of recent cosmological data are showing interesting hints for the presence of an extra relativistic component, coined Dark Radiation. Here we perform a new search for Dark Radiation, parametrizing it with an effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom parameter, $\neff$. We show that the cosmological data we considered are clearly suggesting the presence for an extra relativistic component with $\neff=4.08_{-0.68}^{+0.71}$ at 95% c.l.. Performing an analysis on Dark Radiation sound speed $c_{\rm eff}$ and viscosity $c_{\rm vis}$ parameters, we found $\ceff=0.312\pm0.026$ and $\cvis=0.29_{-0.16}^{+0.21}$ at 95% c.l., consistent with the expectations of a relativistic free streaming component ($\ceff=\cvis$=1/3). Assuming the presence of 3 relativistic neutrinos we constrain the extra relativistic component with $\nnus=1.10_{-0.72}^{+0.79}$ and $\ceff=0.24_{-0.13}^{+0.08}$ at 95% c.l. while $\cvis$ results as unconstrained. Assuming a massive neutrino component we obtain further indications for Dark Radiation with $\nnus=1.12_{-0.74}^{+0.86}$ at 95% c.l. ., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures minor revisions, accepted for publication on PRD

The Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies provide a unique opportunity to constrain simultaneous variations of the fine-structure constant $��$ and Newton's gravitational constant $G$. Those correlated variations are possible in a wide class of theoretical models. In this brief paper we show that the current data, assuming that particle masses are constant, gives no clear indication for such variations, but already prefers that any relative variations in $��$ should be of the same sign of those of $G$ for variations of $\sim 1 %$. We also show that a cosmic complementarity is present with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and that a combination of current CMB and BBN data strongly constraints simultaneous variations in $��$ and $G$. We search for the presence of cosmological neutrino background (CNB) anisotropies in recent WMAP 5-year data using their signature imprinted on modifications to cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum. By parametrizing the neutrino background anisotropies with the speed viscosity parameter $c_\vis$, we find that the WMAP 5-year data alone provide only a weak indication for CNB anisotropies with $c_\vis^2 > 0.06$ at the 95% confidence level. When we combine CMB anisotropy data with measurements of galaxy clustering, SN-Ia Hubble diagram, and other cosmological information, the detection increases to $c_\vis^2 > 0.16$ at the same 95% confidence level. Future data from Planck, combined with a weak lensing survey such as the one expected with DUNE from space, will be able to measure the CNB anisotropy parameter at about 10% accuracy. The new three year WMAP data seem to confirm the presence of non-standard large scale features in the Cosmic Microwave Anisotropies power spectrum. While these features may hint at uncorrected experimental systematics, it is also possible to generate, in a cosmological way, oscillations on large angular scales by introducing a sharp step in the inflaton potential. Using current cosmological data, we derive constraints on the position, magnitude and gradient of a possible step. We show that a step in the inflaton potential, while strongly constrained by current data, is still allowed and may provide an interesting explanation to the currently measured deviations from the standard featureless spectrum. Moreover, we show that inflationary oscillations in the primordial power spectrum can significantly bias parameter estimates from standard ruler methods involving measurements of baryon oscillations., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures; final version published in Phys. We extract parameters relevant for distinguishing among single-field inflation models from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data set, and from a combination of the WMAP data and seven other Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. We use only CMB data and perform a likelihood analysis over a grid of models including the full error covariance matrix. We find that a model with a scale-invariant scalar power spectrum ($n=1$), no tensor contribution, and no running of the spectral index, is within the 1-$\sigma$ contours of both data sets. We then apply the Monte Carlo reconstruction technique to both data sets to generate an ensemble of inflationary potentials consistent with observations. None of the three basic classes of inflation models (small-field, large-field, and hybrid) are completely ruled out, although hybrid models are favored by the best-fit region. The reconstruction process indicates that a wide variety of smooth potentials for the inflaton are consistent with the data, implying that the first-year WMAP result is still too crude to constrain significantly either the height or the shape of the inflaton potential. In particular, the lack of evidence for tensor fluctuations makes it impossible to constrain the energy scale of inflation. Nonetheless, the data rule out a large portion of the available parameter space for inflation. For instance, we find that potentials of the form $V = \lambda \phi^4$ are ruled out to $3\sigma$ by the combined data set, but not by the WMAP data taken alone., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures. Recent measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy have provided evidence for the presence of oscillations in the angular power spectrum. These oscillations are a wonderful confirmation of the standard cosmological scenario and allow us to derive constraints on many cosmological, astrophysical and inflationary parameters. The advent of high resolution cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments now allows studies on the temperature fluctuations at scales corresponding to few arcminutes and below. Though the reported excess power at $\ell \sim 2000 - 6000$ by CBI and BIMA is roughly consistent with a secondary contribution resulting from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, this requires a higher normalization for the matter power spectrum than measured by other means. In addition to a local red-shift contribution, another strong possibility for anisotropies at very small scales involve non-standard aspects of inflationary models. To distinguish between contributions from early universe and local structures, including a potential point source contribution, and to understand the extent to which structures at low red-shifts contribute to small scale temperature anisotropies, it maybe necessary to perform a combined study involving CMB and the large scale structure. We suggest a cross-correlation of the temperature data with a map of the large scale structure, such as the galaxy distribution. For next generation small angular scale CMB experiments, multi-frequency observations may be a necessary aspect to allow an additional possibility to distinguish between these different scenarios., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. In the past years 'quintessence' models have been considered which can produce the accelerated expansion in the universe suggested by recent astronomical observations. One of the key differences between quintessence and a cosmological constant is that the energy density in quintessence, $\Omega_\phi$, could be a significant fraction of the overall energy even in the early universe, while the cosmological constant will be dynamically relevant only at late times. We use standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the observed abundances of primordial nuclides to put constraints on $\Omega_\phi$ at temperatures near $T \sim 1MeV$. We point out that current experimental data does not support the presence of such a field, providing the strong constraint $\Omega_\phi(MeV) < 0.045$ at $2\sigma$ C.L. and strengthening previous results. We also consider the effect a scaling field has on CMB anisotropies using the recent data from Boomerang and DASI, providing the CMB constraint $\Omega_\phi \le 0.39$ at $2\sigma$ during the radiation dominated epoch., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. In recent years, upper limits on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies combined with predictions made by theories of galaxy formation, have been extremely powerful in ruling out purely baryonic dark matter (BDM) universes. However, it has recently been argued that the absence of a prominent second peak in the anisotropy spectrum measured by the BOOMERanG-98 and MAXIMA-1 experiments seems to favour a $\Lambda$BDM model when combined with standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints. In this {\it Letter}, we further investigate this result showing that, using the CMB data {\it alone}, a purely baryonic adiabatic model of structure formation seems unlikely if the universe is flat ($\Omega=1$). Combining the CMB data with supernova type Ia (SNIa) data renders purely baryonic models inconsistent with flatness at high significance and more than $3 \sigma$ away from both the BBN constraints and the HST key project result $h=0.72 \pm 0.08$. These results indicate that only a radical revision of cosmology with {\it ad hoc} properties could bring baryonic models such as those advocated by MOND enthusiasts back into agreement with current observations., Comment: 5 pages LaTeX file, with 3 figures incorporated (uses emulateapj.sty and epsf).
