The correct treatment of d electrons is of prime importance in order to predict the electronic properties of the prototype chalcopyrite semiconductors. The effect of d states is linked with the anion displacement parameter u, which in turn influences the bandgap of these systems. Semilocal exchange-correlation functionals which yield good structural properties of semiconductors and insulators often fail to predict reasonable u because of the underestimation of the bandgaps arising from the strong interplay between d electrons. In the present study, we show that the meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) obtained from the cuspless hydrogen density (MGGAC) [Phys. Rev. B 100, 155140 (2019)] performs in an improved manner in apprehending the key features of the electronic properties of chalcopyrites, and its bandgaps are comparative to that obtained using state-of-art hybrid methods. Moreover, the present assessment also shows the importance of the Pauli kinetic energy enhancement factor, $\alpha=(\tau-\tau^W)/\tau^{unif}$ in describing the d electrons in chalcopyrites. The present study strongly suggests that the MGGAC functional within semilocal approximations can be a better and preferred choice to study the chalcopyrites and other solid-state systems due to its superior performance and significantly low computational cost., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We propose global hybrid approximations of the exchange-correlation (XC) energy functional which reproduce well the modified fourth-order gradient expansion of the exchange energy in the semiclassical limit of many-electron neutral atoms and recover the full local density approximation (LDA) linear response. These XC functionals represent the hybrid versions of the APBE functional [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 186406, (2011)] yet employing an additional correlation functional which uses the localization concept of the correlation energy density to improve the compatibility with the Hartree-Fock exchange as well as the coupling-constant-resolved XC potential energy. Broad energetical and structural testings, including thermochemistry and geometry, transition metal complexes, non-covalent interactions, gold clusters and small gold-molecule interfaces, as well as an analysis of the hybrid parameters, show that our construction is quite robust. In particular, our testing shows that the resulting hybrid, including 20\% of Hartree-Fock exchange and named hAPBE, performs remarkably well for a broad palette of systems and properties, being generally better than popular hybrids (PBE0 and B3LYP). We review the performance of the PBEint GGA functional (Phys. Rev. B 2010, 82, 113104) recently proposed to improve the description of hybrid interfaces, and we introduce its one-parameter hybrid form (hPBEint). We consider different well established benchmarks for energetic and structural properties of molecular and solid-state systems as well as model systems and newly developed benchmark sets for dipole moments and metal-molecule interactions. We find that PBEint and hPBEint (with 16.67% Hartree-Fock exchange) yield the overall best performance, working well for most of the considered properties and systems and showing a balanced behavior for different problems. We present a detailed study of the coupling-constant-averaged exchange-correlation hole density at a jellium surface, which we obtain in the random-phase approximation (RPA) of many-body theory. We report contour plots of the exchange-only and exchange-correlation hole densities, the integration of the exchange-correlation hole density over the surface plane, the on-top correlation hole, and the energy density. We find that the on-top correlation hole is accurately described by local and semilocal density-functional approximations. We also find that for electrons that are localized far outside the surface the main part of the corresponding exchange-correlation hole is localized at the image plane., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Semilocal density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy are needed for large electronic systems. The Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) is semilocal and usefully accurate, but predicts too-long lattice constants. Recent "GGA's for solids" yield good lattice constants but poor atomization energies of molecules. We show that the construction principle for one of them (restoring the density gradient expansion for exchange over a wide range of densities) can be used to construct a "revised TPSS" meta-GGA with accurate lattice constants, surface energies, and atomization energies for ordinary matter., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report a three-dimensional wave-vector analysis of the jellium exchange-correlation (xc) surface energy in the random-phase approximation (RPA). The RPA accurately describes long-range xc effects which are challenging for semilocal approximations, since it includes the universal small-wave-vector behavior derived by Langreth and Perdew. We use these rigorous RPA calculations for jellium slabs to test RPA versions of nonempirical semilocal density-functional approximations for the xc energy. The local spin density approximation displays canceling errors in the small- and intermediate-wave-vector regions. The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation improves the analysis for intermediate wave vectors, but remains too low for small wave vectors (implying too-low jellium xc surface energies). The nonempirical metageneralized gradient approximation of Tao, Perdew, Staroverov, and Scuseria gives a realistic wave-vector analysis, even for small wave vectors or long-range effects.
