Search

Evidence for a low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background has recently been reported based on analyses of pulsar timing array data. The most likely source of such a background is a population of supermassive black hole binaries, the loudest of which may be individually detected in these datasets. Here we present the search for individual supermassive black hole binaries in the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. We introduce several new techniques, which enhance the efficiency and modeling accuracy of the analysis. The search uncovered weak evidence for two candidate signals, one with a gravitational-wave frequency of $\sim$4 nHz, and another at $\sim$170 nHz. The significance of the low-frequency candidate was greatly diminished when Hellings-Downs correlations were included in the background model. The high-frequency candidate was discounted due to the lack of a plausible host galaxy, the unlikely astrophysical prior odds of finding such a source, and since most of its support comes from a single pulsar with a commensurate binary period. Finding no compelling evidence for signals from individual binary systems, we place upper limits on the strain amplitude of gravitational waves emitted by such systems., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. This paper presents rigorous tests of pulsar timing array methods and software, examining their consistency across a wide range of injected parameters and signal strength. We discuss updates to the 15-year isotropic gravitational-wave background analyses and their corresponding code representations. Descriptions of the internal structure of the flagship algorithms \texttt{Enterprise} and \texttt{PTMCMCSampler} are given to facilitate understanding of the PTA likelihood structure, how models are built, and what methods are currently used in sampling the high-dimensional PTA parameter space. We introduce a novel version of the PTA likelihood that uses a two-step marginalization procedure that performs much faster when the white noise parameters remain fixed. We perform stringent tests of consistency and correctness of the Bayesian and frequentist analysis software. For the Bayesian analysis, we test prior recovery, injection recovery, and Bayes factors. For the frequentist analysis, we test that the cross-correlation-based optimal statistic, when modified to account for a non-negligible gravitational-wave background, accurately recovers the amplitude of the background. We also summarize recent advances and tests performed on the optimal statistic in the literature from both GWB detection and parameter estimation perspectives. Although neutron star-black hole binaries have been identified through mergers detected in gravitational waves, a pulsar-black hole binary has yet to be detected. While short-period binaries are detectable due to a clear signal in the pulsar's timing residuals, effects from a long-period binary could be masked by other timing effects, allowing them to go undetected. In particular, a long-period binary measured over a small subset of its orbital period could manifest via time derivatives of the spin-frequency incompatible with isolated pulsar properties. We assess the possibility of pulsars having unknown companions in long-period binaries and put constraints on the range of binary properties that may remain undetected in current data, but that may be detectable with further observations. We find that for 35% of canonical pulsars with published higher order derivatives, the precision of measurements is not enough to confidently reject binarity (period greater than ~2 kyr), and that a black-hole binary companion could not be ruled out for a sample of pulsars without published constraints if the period is greater than 1 kyr. While we find no convincing cases in the literature, we put more stringent limits on orbital period and longitude of periastron for the few pulsars with published higher-order frequency derivatives (n greater than 3). We discuss the detectability of candidates and find that a sample pulsar in a 100 yr orbit could be detectable within 5-10 yr., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Accepted to ApJ

The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) has reported evidence for the presence of an isotropic nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) in its 15 yr dataset. However, if the GWB is produced by a population of inspiraling supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) systems, then the background is predicted to be anisotropic, depending on the distribution of these systems in the local Universe and the statistical properties of the SMBHB population. In this work, we search for anisotropy in the GWB using multiple methods and bases to describe the distribution of the GWB power on the sky. We do not find significant evidence of anisotropy, and place a Bayesian $95\%$ upper limit on the level of broadband anisotropy such that $(C_{l>0} / C_{l=0}) < 20\%$. We also derive conservative estimates on the anisotropy expected from a random distribution of SMBHB systems using astrophysical simulations conditioned on the isotropic GWB inferred in the 15-yr dataset, and show that this dataset has sufficient sensitivity to probe a large fraction of the predicted level of anisotropy. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are galactic-scale gravitational wave detectors. Each individual arm, composed of a millisecond pulsar, a radio telescope, and a kiloparsecs-long path, differs in its properties but, in aggregate, can be used to extract low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signals. We present a noise and sensitivity analysis to accompany the NANOGrav 15-year data release and associated papers, along with an in-depth introduction to PTA noise models. As a first step in our analysis, we characterize each individual pulsar data set with three types of white noise parameters and two red noise parameters. These parameters, along with the timing model and, particularly, a piecewise-constant model for the time-variable dispersion measure, determine the sensitivity curve over the low-frequency GW band we are searching. We tabulate information for all of the pulsars in this data release and present some representative sensitivity curves. We then combine the individual pulsar sensitivities using a signal-to-noise-ratio statistic to calculate the global sensitivity of the PTA to a stochastic background of GWs, obtaining a minimum noise characteristic strain of $7\times 10^{-15}$ at 5 nHz. A power law-integrated analysis shows rough agreement with the amplitudes recovered in NANOGrav's 15-year GW background analysis. The 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) shows positive evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave (GW) background. In this paper, we investigate potential cosmological interpretations of this signal, specifically cosmic inflation, scalar-induced GWs, first-order phase transitions, cosmic strings, and domain walls. We find that, with the exception of stable cosmic strings of field theory origin, all these models can reproduce the observed signal. When compared to the standard interpretation in terms of inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), many cosmological models seem to provide a better fit resulting in Bayes factors in the range from 10 to 100. However, these results strongly depend on modeling assumptions about the cosmic SMBHB population and, at this stage, should not be regarded as evidence for new physics. Furthermore, we identify excluded parameter regions where the predicted GW signal from cosmological sources significantly exceeds the NANOGrav signal. These parameter constraints are independent of the origin of the NANOGrav signal and illustrate how pulsar timing data provide a new way to constrain the parameter space of these models. Finally, we search for deterministic signals produced by models of ultralight dark matter (ULDM) and dark matter substructures in the Milky Way. We find no evidence for either of these signals and thus report updated constraints on these models. We present the discovery of 24 pulsars in 15 Globular Clusters (GCs) using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). These include the first pulsar discoveries in M2, M10, and M14. Most of the new systems are either confirmed or likely members of binary systems. M53C, NGC6517H and I are the only three pulsars confirmed to be isolated. M14A is a black widow pulsar with an orbital period of 5.5 hours and a minimum companion mass of 0.016 \Ms. M14E is an eclipsing binary pulsar with an orbital period of 20.3 hours. With the other 8 discoveries that have been reported elsewhere, in total 32 GC pulsars have been discovered by FAST so far. In addition, We detected M3A twice. This was enough to determine that it is a black widow pulsar with an orbital period of 3.3 hours and a minimum companion mass of 0.0125 \Ms., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJL, comments are always welcomed!

Einstein's theory of gravity, general relativity, has passed stringent tests in laboratories, elsewhere in the Solar Sytem, and in pulsar binaries. Nevertheless it is known to be incompatible with quantum mechanics and must differ from the true behaviour of matter in strong fields and at small spatial scales. A key aspect of general relativity to test is the strong equivalence principle (SEP), which states that all freely falling objects, regardless of how strong their gravity, experience the same acceleration in the same gravitational field. Essentially all alternatives to general relativity violate this principle at some level. Previous direct tests of the SEP are limited by the weak gravity of the bodies in the Earth-Moon-Sun system or by the weak gravitational pull of the Galaxy on pulsar-white dwarf binaries. PSR~J0337+1715 is a hierarchical stellar triple system, where the inner binary consists of a millisecond radio pulsar in a $1.6$-day orbit with a white dwarf. This inner binary is in a $327$-day orbit with another white dwarf. In this system, the pulsar and the inner companion fall toward the outer companion with an acceleration about $10^8$ times greater than that produced by falling in the Galactic potential, and the pulsar's gravitational binding energy is roughly $10\%$ of its mass. Here we report that in spite of the pulsar's strong gravity, the accelerations experienced by it and the inner white dwarf differ by a fraction of no more than $2.6\times 10^{-6}$ ($95\%$ confidence level). We can roughly compare this to other SEP tests by using the strong-field Nordtvedt parameter $\hat\eta_N$. Our limit on $\hat\eta_N$ is a factor of ten smaller than that obtained from (weak-field) Solar-System SEP tests and a factor of almost a thousand smaller than that obtained from other strong-field SEP tests., Comment: This is the pre-refereeing version as required by Nature's rules

In 2012, five high school students involved in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory discovered the millisecond pulsar PSR J1400$-$1431 and initial timing parameters were published in Rosen et al. (2013) a year later. Since then, we have obtained a phase-connected timing solution spanning five years, resolving a significant position discrepancy and measuring $\dot{P}$, proper motion, parallax, and a monotonic slope in dispersion measure over time. Due to PSR J1400$-$1431's proximity and significant proper motion, we use the Shklovskii effect and other priors to determine a 95% confidence interval for PSR J1400$-$1431's distance, $d=270^{+130}_{-80}$ pc. With an improved timing position, we present the first detection of the pulsar's low-mass white dwarf (WD) companion using the Goodman Spectrograph on the 4.1-m SOAR telescope. Deeper imaging suggests that it is a cool DA-type WD with $T_{\rm eff}=3000\pm100$ K and $R/R_\odot=(2.19\pm0.03)\times10^{-2}\,(d/270\,{\rm pc})$. We show a convincing association between PSR J1400$-$1431 and a $��$-ray point source, 3FGL J1400.5$-$1437, but only weak (3.3-$��$) evidence of pulsations after folding $��$-ray photons using our radio timing model. We detect an X-ray counterpart with XMM-Newton but the measured X-ray luminosity ($1\times10^{29}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) makes PSR J1400$-$1431 the least X-ray luminous rotation-powered millisecond pulsar (MSP) detected to date. Together, our findings present a consistent picture of a nearby ($d\approx230$ pc) MSP in a 9.5-day orbit around a cool, $\sim$0.3 M$_\odot$ WD companion, with orbital inclination, $i\gtrsim60^\circ$., 13 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

We present the current estimates of the Galactic merger rate of double-neutron-star (DNS) systems. Using a statistical analysis method, we calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of the rate estimates, which allows us to assign confidence intervals to the rate estimates. We calculate the Galactic DNS merger rate based on the three known systems B1913+16, B1534+12, and J0737-3039. The discovery of J0737-3039 increases the estimated DNS merger rate by a factor ~6 than what is previously known. The most likely values of DNS merger rate lie in the range 3-190 per Myr depending on different pulsar models. Motivated by a strong correlation between the peak rate estimates and a pulsar luminosity function, we calculate a 'global' probability distribution as a single representation of the parameter space covered by different pulsar population models. We compare the global PDF with the observed supernova Ib/c rate, which sets an upper limit on the DNS merger rate. In this paper we consider the population of eccentric binaries with a neutron star and a white dwarf that has been revealed in our galaxy in recent years through binary pulsar observations. We apply our statistical analysis method (Kim, Kalogera, & Lorimer 2003)and calculate the Galactic formation rate of these binaries empirically. We then compare our results with rate predictions based on binary population synthesis from various research groups and for various ranges of model input parameters. For our reference moel, we find the Galactic formation rate of these eccentric systems to be ~7 per Myr, about an order of magnitude smaller than results from binary evolution estimations. However, the empirical estimates are calculated with no correction for pulsar beaming, and therefore they should be taken as lower limits. Despite uncertainties that exceed an order of magnitude, there is significant overlap of the various rate calculations. In search of the counterpart to the brightest unidentified gamma-ray source 3EG J2020+4017 we report on new X-ray and radio observations of the gamma-Cygni field with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and with the Green Bank Telescope. We also report on reanalysis of archival ROSAT data. With Chandra it became possible for the first time to measure the position of the putative gamma-ray counterpart RX J2020.2+4026 with sub-arcsec accuracy and to deduce its X-ray spectral characteristics. These observations demonstrate that RX J2020.2+4026 is associated with a K field star and therefore is unlikely to be the counterpart of the bright gamma-ray source 2CG078+2 in the SNR G78.2+2.1 as had been previously suggested. The Chandra observation detected 37 additional X-ray sources which were correlated with catalogs of optical and infrared data. Subsequent GBT radio observations covered the complete 99% EGRET likelihood contour of 3EG J2020+4017 with a sensitivity limit of L_820 ~ 0.1 mJy kpc^2 which is lower than most of the recent deep radio search limits. If there is a pulsar operating in 3EG J2020+4017 this sensitivity limit suggests that the pulsar either does not produce significant amounts of radio emission or that its geometry is such that the radio beam does not intersect with the line of sight. Finally, reanalysis of archival ROSAT data leads to a flux upper limit of f_x < 1.8 x 10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 for a putative point-like X-ray source located within the 68% confidence contour of 3EG J2020+4017. Adopting the SNR age of 5400 yrs and assuming a spin-down to X-ray energy conversion factor of 10^-4 this upper limit constrains the parameters of a putative neutron star as a counterpart for 3EG J2020+4017 to be P >= 160 (d/1.5 kpc)^-1 ms, P_dot >= 5 x 10^-13 (d/1.5 kpc)^-1 s s^-1 and B_perp >= 9 x 10^12 (d/1.5 kpc)^-1 G., Accepted for publication in ApJ. We summarize our results on the Galactic merger rate of double neutron stars (DNS) in view of the recent discovery of PSR J0737-3039. We also present previously unpublished results for the 'global' probability distribution of merger rate values that incorporate the presently known systematics from the radio pulsar luminosity function. The most likely value obtained from the global distribution is only ~15 per Myr, but a re-analysis of the current pulsar sample and radio luminosities is needed for a reliable assessment of the best fitting distribution. We present an analysis method that allows us to estimate the Galactic formation of radio pulsar populations based on their observed properties and our understanding of survey selection effects. More importantly, this method allows us to assign a statistical significance to such rate estimates and calculate the allowed ranges of values at various confidence levels. Here, we apply the method to the question of the double neutron star (NS-NS) coalescence rate using the current observed sample, and we find calculate the most likely value for the total Galactic coalescence rate to lie in the range 3-22 Myr^{-1}, for different pulsar population models. The corresponding range of expected detection rates of NS--NS inspiral are (1-9)x10^{-3} yr^{-1} for the initial LIGO, and 6-50 yr^{-1} for the advanced LIGO. Based on this newly developed statistical method, we also calculate the probability distribution for the expected number of pulsars that could be observed by the Parkes Multibeam survey, when acceleration searches will alleviate the effects of Doppler smearing due to orbital motions.
