This paper concerns the fractional $p$-Laplace operator $\Delta_p^s$ in non-divergence form, which has been introduced in [Bjorland, Caffarelli, Figalli (2012)]. For any $p\in [2,\infty)$ and $s\in (\frac{1}{2},1)$ we first define two families of non-local, non-linear averaging operators, parametrised by $\epsilon$ and defined for all bounded, Borel functions $u:\mathbb{R}^N\to \mathbb{R}$. We prove that $\Delta_p^s u(x)$ emerges as the $\epsilon^{2s}$-order coefficient in the expansion of the deviation of each $\epsilon$-average from the value $u(x)$, in the limit of the domain of averaging exhausting an appropriate cone in $\mathbb{R}^N$ at the rate $\epsilon\to 0$. Second, we consider the $\epsilon$-dynamic programming principles modeled on the first average, and show that their solutions converge uniformly as $\epsilon\to 0$, to viscosity solutions of the homogeneous non-local Dirichlet problem for $\Delta_p^s$, when posed in a domain $\mathcal{D}$ that satisfies the external cone condition and subject to bounded, uniformly continuous data on $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus \mathcal{D}$. Finally, we interpret such $\epsilon$-approximating solutions as values to the non-local Tug-of-War game with noise. In this article, we implement the algorithm based on the convex integration result proved in [Lewicka-Pakzad Analysis and PDE (2017)] and obtain visualizations of the first iterations of the Nash-Kuiper scheme, approx- imating the anomalous solutions to the Monge-Amp��re equation in two dimensions.

We propose a new finite difference approximation to the Dirichlet problem for the homogeneous $\mathbf{p}$-Laplace equation posed on an $N$-dimensional domain, in connection with the Tug of War games with noise. Our game and the related mean-value expansion that we develop, superposes the ``deterministic averages'' ``$\frac{1}{2}(\inf +\sup)$'' taken over balls, with the ``stochastic averages'' ``$\fint$'', taken over $N$-dimensional ellipsoids whose aspect ratio depends on $N,\mathbf{p}$ and whose orientations span all directions while determining $\inf / \sup$. We show that the unique solutions $u_��$ of the related dynamic programming principle are automatically continuous for continuous boundary data, and coincide with the well-defined game values. Our game has thus the min-max property: the order of supremizing the outcomes over strategies of one player and infimizing over strategies of their opponent, is immaterial. We further show that domains satisfying the exterior corkscrew condition are game regular in this context, i.e. the family $\{u_��\}_{��\to 0}$ converges uniformly to the unique viscosity solution of the Dirichlet problem., 25 pages, 2 figures

We investigate a degenerate elliptic PDE related to the $\infty$-Laplace equation $\Delta_{\infty}u=0$. A stability result is derived. The $\Gamma$-convergence of the corresponding functionals is investigated.

We study the effective elastic behaviour of the incompatibly prestrained thin plates, characterized by a Riemann metric $G$ on the reference configuration. We assume that the prestrain is "weak", i.e. it induces scaling of the incompatible elastic energy $E^h$ of order less than $h^2$ in terms of the plate's thickness $h$. We essentially prove two results. First, we establish the $\Gamma$-limit of the scaled energies $h^{-4}E^h$ and show that it consists of a von K\'arm\'an-like energy, given in terms of the first order infinitesimal isometries and of the admissible strains on the surface isometrically immersing $G_{2\times 2}$ (i.e. the prestrain metric on the midplate) in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Second, we prove that in the scaling regime $E^h\sim h^\beta$ with $\beta>2$, there is no other limiting theory: if $\inf h^{-2} E^h \to 0$ then $\inf E^h\leq Ch^4$, and if $\inf h^{-4}E^h\to 0$ then $G$ is realizable and hence $\min E^h = 0$ for every $h$.

We are concerned with the optimal constants: in the Korn inequality under tangential boundary conditions on bounded sets $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, and in the geometric rigidity estimate on the whole $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that the latter constant equals $\sqrt{2}$, and we discuss the relation of the former constants with the optimal Korn's constants under Dirichlet boundary conditions, and in the whole $\mathbb{R}^n$, which are well known to equal $\sqrt{2}$. We also discuss the attainability of these constants and the structure of deformations/displacement fields in the optimal sets.

This paper concerns the questions of flexibility and rigidity of solutions to the Monge-Amp��re equation which arises as a natural geometrical constraint in prestrained nonlinear elasticity. In particular, we focus on anomalous i.e. "flexible" weak solutions that can be constructed through methods of convex integration �� la Nash & Kuiper and establish the related h-principle for the Monge-Amp��re equation in two dimensions, 30 pages, 1 figure

We study the double-obstacle problem for the p-Laplace operator, p 2 [2;1). We prove that for Lipschitz boundary data and Lipschitz obstacles, viscosity solutions are unique and coincide with variational solutions. They are also uniform limits of solutions to discrete min-max problems that can be interpreted as the dynamic programming principle for appropriate tug-ofwar games with noise. In these games, both players in addition to choosing their strategies, are also allowed to choose stopping times. The solutions to the double-obstacle problems are limits of values of these games, when the step-size controlling the single shift in the token's position, converges to 0. We propose a numerical scheme based on this observation and show how it works for some examples of obstacles and boundary data., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We derive a new model for pre-strained thin films, which consists of minimizing a biharmonic energy of deformations $v\in W^{2,2}$ satisfying the Monge-Amp��re constraint $\det\nabla^2v = f$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete elastic energies in presence of the prestrain metric $G$, assigned on the continuum reference configuration $\Omega$. When the mesh size of the discrete lattice in $\Omega$ goes to zero, we obtain the variational bounds on the limiting (in the sense of $\Gamma$-limit) energy. In case of the nearest-neighbour and next-to-nearest-neibghour interactions, we derive a precise asymptotic formula, and compare it with the non-Euclidean model energy relative to $G$.

Motivated by the degree of smoothness of constrained embeddings of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and by the recent applications to the elasticity of shallow shells, we rigorously derive the $\Gamma$-limit of 3-dimensional nonlinear elastic energy of a shallow shell of thickness $h$, where the depth of the shell scales like $h^\alpha$ and the applied forces scale like $h^{\alpha+2}$, in the limit when $h\to 0$. The main analytical ingredients are two independent results: a theorem on approximation of $W^{2,2}$ solutions of the Monge-Amp\`ere equation by smooth solutions, and a theorem on the matching (in other words, continuation) of second order isometries to exact isometries.

We prove convergence of critical points $u^h$ of the nonlinear elastic energies $E^h$ of thin incompressible plates $��^h=��\times (-h/2, h/2)$, which satisfy the von K��rm��n scaling: $E^h(u^h)\leq Ch^4$, to critical points of the appropriate limiting (incompressible von K��rm��n) functional.

We prove the local in time existence of the classical solutions to the system of equations of isothermal viscoelasticity with clamped boundary conditions. We deal with a general form of viscous stress tensor $\mathcal{Z}(F,\dot F)$, assuming a Korn-type condition on its derivative $D_{\dot F}\mathcal{Z}(F, \dot F)$. This condition is compatible with the balance of angular momentum, frame invariance and the Claussius-Duhem inequality. We give examples of linear and nonlinear (in $\dot F$) tensors $\mathcal{Z}$ satisfying these required conditions.

We provide a derivation of the Foppl-von Karman equations for the shape of and stresses in an elastic plate with residual strains. These might arise from a range of causes: inhomogeneous growth, plastic deformation, swelling or shrinkage driven by solvent absorption. Our analysis gives rigorous bounds on the convergence of the three dimensional equations of elasticity to the low-dimensional description embodied in the plate-like description of laminae and thus justifies a recent formulation of the problem to the shape of growing leaves. We summarize some recent results of the authors and their collaborators, regarding the derivation of thin elastic shell models (for shells with mid-surface of arbitrary geometry) from the variational theory of 3d nonlinear elasticity.
