We study the spin and thermal conductivity of spin-1/2 ladders at finite temperature. This is relevant for experiments with quantum magnets. Using a state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group algorithm, we compute the current autocorrelation functions on the real-time axis and then carry out a Fourier integral to extract the frequency dependence of the corresponding conductivities. The finite-time error is analyzed carefully. We first investigate the limiting case of spin-1/2 XXZ chains, for which our analysis suggests non-zero dc-conductivities in all interacting cases irrespective of the presence or absence of spin Drude weights. For ladders, we observe that all models studied are normal conductors with no ballistic contribution. Nonetheless, only the high-temperature spin conductivity of XX ladders has a simple diffusive, Drude-like form, while Heisenberg ladders exhibit a more complicated low-frequency behavior. We compute the dc spin conductivity down to temperatures of the order of T~0.5J, where J is the exchange coupling along the legs of the ladder. We further extract mean-free paths and discuss our results in relation to thermal conductivity measurements on quantum magnets.

We study one-dimensional spinless fermions at zero and finite temperature T using the density matrix renormalization group. We consider nearest as well as next-nearest neighbor interactions; the latter render the system inaccessible by a Bethe ansatz treatment. Using an infinite-system alogrithm we demonstrate the emergence of Luttinger liquid physics at low energies for a variety of static correlation functions as well as for thermodynamic properties. The characteristic power law suppression of the momentum distribution n(k) function at T=0 can be directly observed over several orders of magnitude. At finite temperature, we show that n(k) obeys a scaling relation. The Luttinger liquid parameter and the renormalized Fermi velocity can be extracted from the density response function, the specific heat, and/or the susceptibility without the need to carry out any finite-size analysis. We illustrate that the energy scale below which Luttinger liquid power laws manifest vanishes as the half-filled system is driven into a gapped phase by large interactions.

We use the Matsubara functional renormalization group (FRG) to describe electronic correlations within the single impurity Anderson model. In contrast to standard FRG calculations, we account for the frequency-dependence of the two-particle vertex in order to address finite-energy properties (e.g, spectral functions). By comparing with data obtained from the numerical renormalization group (NRG) framework, the FRG approximation is shown to work well for arbitrary parameters (particularly finite temperatures) provided that the electron-electron interaction U is not too large. We demonstrate that aspects of (large U) Kondo physics which are described well by a simpler frequency-independent truncation scheme are no longer captured by the 'higher-order' frequency-dependent approximation. In contrast, at small to intermediate U the results obtained by the more elaborate scheme agree better with NRG data. We suggest to parametrize the two-particle vertex not by three independent energy variables but by introducing three functions each of a single frequency. We investigate the effect of local Coulomb correlations on electronic transport through a variety of coupled quantum dot systems connected to Fermi liquid leads. We use a newly developed functional renormalization group scheme to compute the gate voltage dependence of the linear conductance, the transmission phase, and the dot occupancies. A detailed derivation of the flow equations for the dot level positions, the inter-dot hybridizations, and the effective interaction is presented. For specific setups and parameter sets we compare the results to existing accurate numerical renormalization group data. This shows that our approach covers the essential physics and is quantitatively correct up to fairly large Coulomb interactions while being much faster, very flexible, and simple to implement. We then demonstrate the power of our method to uncover interesting new physics. In several dots coupled in series the combined effect of correlations and asymmetry leads to a vanishing of transmission resonances. In contrast, for a parallel double-dot we find parameter regimes in which the two-particle interaction generates additional resonances., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures included, version accepted for publication in PRB

The functional renormalization group provides an efficient description of the interplay and competition of correlations on different energy scales in interacting Fermi systems. An exact hierarchy of flow equations yields the gradual evolution from a microscopic model Hamiltonian to the effective action as a function of a continuously decreasing energy cutoff. Practical implementations rely on suitable truncations of the hierarchy, which capture nonuniversal properties at higher energy scales in addition to the universal low-energy asymptotics. As a specific example we study transport properties through a single-level quantum dot coupled to Fermi liquid leads. In particular, we focus on the temperature T=0 gate voltage dependence of the linear conductance. A comparison with exact results shows that the functional renormalization group approach captures the broad resonance plateau as well as the emergence of the Kondo scale.
