This work investigates the problem of simultaneous tracking and jamming of a rogue drone in 3D space with a team of cooperative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We propose a decentralized estimation, decision and control framework in which a team of UAVs cooperate in order to a) optimally choose their mobility control actions that result in accurate target tracking and b) select the desired transmit power levels which cause uninterrupted radio jamming and thus ultimately disrupt the operation of the rogue drone. The proposed decision and control framework allows the UAVs to reconfigure themselves in 3D space such that the cooperative simultaneous tracking and jamming (CSTJ) objective is achieved; while at the same time ensures that the unwanted inter-UAV jamming interference caused during CSTJ is kept below a specified critical threshold. Finally, we formulate this problem under challenging conditions i.e., uncertain dynamics, noisy measurements and false alarms. Radar sensors are crucial for environment perception of driver assistance systems as well as autonomous vehicles. With a rising number of radar sensors and the so far unregulated automotive radar frequency band, mutual interference is inevitable and must be dealt with. Algorithms and models operating on radar data are required to run the early processing steps on specialized radar sensor hardware. This specialized hardware typically has strict resource-constraints, i.e. a low memory capacity and low computational power. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based approaches for denoising and interference mitigation yield promising results for radar processing in terms of performance. Regarding resource-constraints, however, CNNs typically exceed the hardware's capacities by far. In this paper we investigate quantization techniques for CNN-based denoising and interference mitigation of radar signals. We analyze the quantization of (i) weights and (ii) activations of different CNN-based model architectures. This quantization results in reduced memory requirements for model storage and during inference. We compare models with fixed and learned bit-widths and contrast two different methodologies for training quantized CNNs, i.e. the straight-through gradient estimator and training distributions over discrete weights. We illustrate the importance of structurally small real-valued base models for quantization and show that learned bit-widths yield the smallest models. We achieve a memory reduction of around 80\% compared to the real-valued baseline. This paper focuses on boosting the performance of small cell networks (SCNs) by integrating multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in consideration of imperfect channel-state information (CSI). The estimation error and the spatial randomness of base stations (BSs) are characterized by using Kronecker model and Poisson point process (PPP), respectively. The outage probabilities of MIMO-NOMA enhanced SCNs are first derived in closed-form by taking into account two grouping policies, including random grouping and distance-based grouping. It is revealed that the average outage probabilities are irrelevant to the intensity of BSs in the interference-limited regime, while the outage performance deteriorates if the intensity is sufficiently low. Besides, as the channel uncertainty lessens, the asymptotic analyses manifest that the target rates must be restricted up to a bound to achieve an arbitrarily low outage probability in the absence of the inter-cell interference.Moreover, highly correlated estimation error ameliorates the outage performance under a low quality of CSI, otherwise it behaves oppositely. Afterwards, the goodput is maximized by choosing appropriate precoding matrix, receiver filters and transmission rates. In the end, the numerical results verify our analysis and corroborate the superiority of our proposed algorithm.

Defensive Pass Interference (DPI) is one of the most impactful penalties in the NFL. DPI is a spot foul, yielding an automatic first down to the team in possession. With such an influence on the game, referees have no room for a mistake. It is also a very rare event, which happens 1–2 times per 100 pass attempts. With technology improving and many IoT wearables being put on the athletes to collect valuable data, there is a solid ground for applying machine learning (ML) techniques to improve every aspect of the game. The work presented here is the first attempt in predicting DPI using player tracking GPS data. The data we used was collected by NFL's Next Gen Stats throughout the 2018 regular season. We present ML models for highly imbalanced time-series binary classification: LSTM, GRU, ANN, and Multivariate LSTM-FCN. Results showed that using GPS tracking data to predict DPI has limited success. The best performing models had high recall with low precision which resulted in the classification of many false positive examples. Looking closely at the data confirmed that there is just not enough information to determine whether a foul was committed. This study might serve as a filter for multi-step pipeline for video sequence classification which could be able to solve this problem.

We use coherence theory to explain why it is necessary to modify the conventional setup of a Michelson interferometer to obtain Haidinger rings with an extended source of white light. The modification consists of introducing a glass slide into one of the two arms of the interferometer. This insertion circumvents the drastic restriction imposed by the low temporal coherence of white light, which prevents the observation of interference rings with the conventional setup. In order to understand this restriction, we developed and implemented a criterion for observing interference fringes. The modified setup also makes it possible to perform a spectral interferometry experiment to analyze the output of the interferometer and determine the refractive index of the glass slide over the whole visible spectrum. The fit of measured data using Sellmeier's law gives the extrapolated value of the refractive index to the IR $n_\mathrm{IR}=1.5307\pm0.0003$ and the value of the characteristic wavelength $\lambda_0=(164.5\pm0.4)\;\mathrm{nm}$ of the oscillator responsible for the dispersion., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Indirect Time-of-Flight (iToF) cameras are a promising depth sensing technology. However, they are prone to errors caused by multi-path interference (MPI) and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Traditional methods, after denoising, mitigate MPI by estimating a transient image that encodes depths. Recently, data-driven methods that jointly denoise and mitigate MPI have become state-of-the-art without using the intermediate transient representation. In this paper, we propose to revisit the transient representation. Using data-driven priors, we interpolate/extrapolate iToF frequencies and use them to estimate the transient image. Given direct ToF (dToF) sensors capture transient images, we name our method iToF2dToF. The transient representation is flexible. It can be integrated with different rule-based depth sensing algorithms that are robust to low SNR and can deal with ambiguous scenarios that arise in practice (e.g., specular MPI, optical cross-talk). Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows users sharing a resource-block to efficiently reuse spectrum and improve cell sum rate $\mathcal {R}_{\mathrm{ tot}}$ at the expense of increased interference. Orthogonal multiple access (OMA), on the other hand, guarantees higher coverage. We introduce partial-NOMA in a large two-user downlink network to provide both throughput and reliability. The associated partial overlap controls interference while still offering spectrum reuse. The nature of the partial overlap also allows us to employ receive-filtering to further suppress interference. For signal decoding in our partial-NOMA setup, we propose a new technique called flexible successive interference cancellation (FSIC) decoding. We plot the rate region abstraction and compare with OMA and NOMA. We formulate a problem to maximize $\mathcal {R}_{\mathrm{ tot}}$ constrained to a minimum throughput requirement for each user and propose an algorithm to find a feasible resource allocation efficiently. Our results show that partial-NOMA allows greater flexibility in terms of performance. Partial-NOMA can also serve users that NOMA cannot. We also show that with appropriate parameter selection and resource allocation, partial-NOMA can outperform NOMA.

Observations in the lowest MWA band between $75-100$ MHz have the potential to constrain the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium at redshift $\sim 13-17$. Using 15 hours of MWA data, we analyse systematics in this band such as radio-frequency interference (RFI), ionospheric and wide field effects. By updating the position of point sources, we mitigate the direction independent calibration error due to ionospheric offsets. Our calibration strategy is optimized for the lowest frequency bands by reducing the number of direction dependent calibrators and taking into account radio sources within a wider field of view. We remove data polluted by systematics based on the RFI occupancy and ionospheric conditions, finally selecting 5.5 hours of the cleanest data. Using these data, we obtain two sigma upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum in the range of $0.1\lessapprox k \lessapprox 1 ~\rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z$=14.2, 15.2 and 16.5, with the lowest limit being $6.3\times 10^6 ~\rm mK^2$ at $\rm k=0.14 \rm ~h~Mpc^{-1}$ and at $z=15.2$ with a possibility of a few \% of signal loss due to direction independent calibration., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) exploits the violation of a Bell inequality to extract secure key even if the users' devices are untrusted. Currently, all DIQKD protocols suffer from the secret key capacity bound, i.e., the secret key rate scales linearly with the transmittance of two users. Here we propose a heralded DIQKD scheme based on entangled coherent states to improve entangling rates whereby long-distance entanglement is created by single-photon-type interference. The secret key rate of our scheme can significantly outperform the traditional two-photon-type Bell-state measurement scheme and, importantly, surpass the above capacity bound. The observation of the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM)-type two-photon interference (TPI) has played an important role in the development of photonic quantum technologies. The time-resolved coincidence-detection technique has been effectively used to identify and characterize the TPI phenomena of long-coherence optical fields. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of the TPI of two phase-randomized weak coherent pulses with time-resolved coincidence detection. The mutual coherence time between the two weak coherent lights is determined by applying a frequency noise to one of the two interfering lights. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which enable tunable anomalous reflection, have appeared as a promising method to enhance wireless systems. In this paper, we propose to use an RIS as a spatial equalizer to address the well-known multi-path fading phenomenon. By introducing some controllable paths artificially against the multi-path fading through the RIS, we can perform equalization during the transmission process instead of at the receiver, and thus all the users can share the same equalizer. Unlike the beamforming application of the RIS, which aims to maximize the received energy at receivers, the objective of the equalization application is to reduce the inter-symbol interference (ISI), which makes phase shifts at the RIS different. To this end, we formulate the phase shift optimization problem and propose an iterative algorithm to solve it. Destructive quantum interference (DQI) and its effects on electron transport are studied in chemical molecules and finite physical lattices that can be described by a discrete Hamiltonian. Starting from a bipartite system whose conductance zeros are known to exist between any two points of a specially designated set, the interference set, we use the Dyson equation to develop a general algorithm for determining the zero conductance points in complex systems, which are not necessarily bipartite. We illustrate this procedure as it applies to the fulvene molecule. The stability of the conductance zeros is analyzed with respect to external perturbations.

We describe a technique to measure photon pair joint spectra by detecting the time-correlation beat note when non-degenerate photon pairs interfere at a beamsplitter. The technique implements a temporal analog of the Ghosh-Mandel effect with one photon counter and a time-resolved Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with two. It is well suited to characterize pairs of photons, each of which can interact with a single atomic species, as required to study recently predicted photon-photon interaction in sub-wavelength atomic arrays. Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility beyond 5G communications. In this paper, we consider the problem of radar sensing with OTFS joint radar-communications waveform and derive a novel OTFS radar signal model by explicitly taking into account the intersymbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. On the basis of the new model, we show how ISI and ICI phenomena can be turned into an advantage to surpass the maximum unambiguous detection limits in range and velocity, arising in existing OFDM and OTFS radar systems. Moreover, we design a generalized likelihood ratio test based detector/estimator that can embrace ISI and ICI effects. We introduce DBS, a new technique for user selection in downlink multi-user communications with extra-large (XL) antenna arrays. DBS categorizes users according to their equivalent distance to the antenna array. Such categorization effectively accounts for inter-user interference while largely reducing the computational burden. Results show that (i) DBS achieves the same performance as the reference zero-forcing beamforming scheme with a lower complexity; (ii) a simplified version of DBS achieves a similar performance when realistic spherical-wavefront (SW) propagation features are considered; (iii) SW propagation brings additional degrees of freedom, which allows for increasing the number of served users., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) promises unprecedented data rates for next-generation wireless systems. To be practically viable, mmWave massive MU-MIMO basestations (BSs) must rely on low-resolution data converters which leaves them vulnerable to jammer interference. This paper proposes beam-slicing, a method that mitigates the impact of a permanently transmitting jammer during uplink transmission for BSs equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Beam-slicing is a localized analog spatial transform that focuses the jammer energy onto few ADCs, so that the transmitted data can be recovered based on the outputs of the interference-free ADCs. We demonstrate the efficacy of beam-slicing in combination with two digital jammer-mitigating data detectors: SNIPS and CHOPS. Soft-Nulling of Interferers with Partitions in Space (SNIPS) combines beam-slicing with a soft-nulling data detector that exploits knowledge of the ADC contamination; projeCtion onto ortHOgonal complement with Partitions in Space (CHOPS) combines beam-slicing with a linear projection that removes all signal components co-linear to an estimate of the jammer channel. We study theoretically optomechanical damping and amplification spectra for vibrations interacting with excitonic polaritons in a zero-dimensional microcavity. We demonstrate, that the spectra strongly depend on the ratio of the exciton-phonon and the photon-phonon coupling constants. The interference between these couplings enables a situation when optomechanical gain exists either only for a lower polaritonic resonance or only for an upper polaritonic resonance. Our results provide insight in the optomechanical interactions in various multi-mode systems, where several resonant oscillators, such as photons, plasmons, or excitons are coupled to the same vibration mode., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the coexistence of underlay spectrum sharing in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A primary system with geographically distributed primary access points (P-APs) serves a multitude of primary users (PUs), while a secondary system serves a large number of secondary users (SUs) in the same primary/licensed spectrum by exploiting the underlay spectrum sharing. To mitigate the secondary co-channel interference inflected at PUs, stringent secondary transmit power constraints are defined for the secondary access points (S-APs). A generalized pilots sharing scheme is used to locally estimate the uplink channels at P-APs/S-APs, and thereby, conjugate precoders are adopted to serve PUs/SUs in the same time-frequency resource element. Moreover, the effect of a user-centric AP clustering scheme is investigated by assigning a suitable set of APs to a particular user. The impact of estimated downlink (DL) channels at PUs/SUs via DL pilots beamformed by P-APs/S-APs is investigated. The achievable primary/secondary rates at PUs/SUs are derived for the statistical DL and estimated DL CSI cases. User-fairness for PUs/SUs is achieved by designing efficient transmit power control policies based on a multi-objective optimization problem formulation of joint underlay spectrum sharing and max-min criteria. The proposed orthogonal multiple-access based analytical framework is also extended to facilitate non-orthogonal multiple-access. Our analysis and numerical results manifest that the primary/secondary performance of underlay spectrum sharing can be boosted by virtue of the average reduction of transmit powers/path-losses, uniform coverage/service, and macro-diversity gains, which are inherent to distributed transmissions/receptions of cell-free massive MIMO., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, Journal version

Weakly supervised temporal action localization aims to detect and localize actions in untrimmed videos with only video-level labels during training. However, without frame-level annotations, it is challenging to achieve localization completeness and relieve background interference. In this paper, we present an Action Unit Memory Network (AUMN) for weakly supervised temporal action localization, which can mitigate the above two challenges by learning an action unit memory bank. In the proposed AUMN, two attention modules are designed to update the memory bank adaptively and learn action units specific classifiers. Furthermore, three effective mechanisms (diversity, homogeneity and sparsity) are designed to guide the updating of the memory network. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to explicitly model the action units with a memory network. Extensive experimental results on two standard benchmarks (THUMOS14 and ActivityNet) demonstrate that our AUMN performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, the average mAP of IoU thresholds from 0.1 to 0.5 on the THUMOS14 dataset is significantly improved from 47.0% to 52.1%., Comment: Accepted by CVPR2021

Within quantum theory, we can create superpositions of different causal orders of events, and observe interference between them. This raises the question of whether quantum theory can produce results that would be impossible to replicate with any classical causal model, thereby violating a causal inequality. This would be a temporal analogue of Bell inequality violation, which proves that no local hidden variable model can replicate quantum results. We propose quantum circuits to test interferometric complementarity using symmetric two-way interferometers coupled to a which-path detector. First, we consider the two-qubit setup in which the controlled transfer of path information to the detector subsystem depletes interference on the probed subspace, testing the visibility-distinguishability trade-off via minimum-error state discrimination measurements. Next, we consider the quantum eraser setup, in which reading out path information in the right basis recovers an interference pattern. These experiments are then carried out in an IBM superconducting transmon processor. A detailed analysis of the results is provided. Despite finding good agreement with theory at a coarse level, we also identify small but persistent systematic deviations preventing the observation of full particle-like and wave-like statistics. We understand them by carefully modeling two-qubit gates, showing that even small coherent errors in their implementation preclude the observation of Bohr's strong formulation of complementarity., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

A theoretical framework and numerical simulations quantifying the impact of atmospheric group velocity dispersion on wireless terahertz communication link error rate were developed based upon experimental work. We present, for the first time, predictions of symbol error rate as a function of link distance, signal bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, and atmospheric conditions, revealing that long-distance, broadband terahertz communication systems may be limited by inter-symbol interference stemming from group velocity dispersion, rather than attenuation. In such dispersion limited links, increasing signal strength does not improve the symbol error rate and, consequently, theoretical predictions of symbol error rate based only on signal-to-noise ratio are invalid for the broadband case. This work establishes a new and necessary foundation for link budget analysis in future long-distance terahertz communication systems that accounts for the non-negligible effects of both attenuation and dispersion., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Multipath holographic interference in strong-field quantum tunnel ionization is key to revealing sub-Angstrom attosecond dynamics for molecular movies. This critical sub-cycle motion is often obscured by longer time-scale effects such as ring-shaped patterns that appear in above-threshold ionization (ATI). In the present work, we overcome this problem by combining two novel techniques in theory and experimental analysis: unit-cell averaging and time-filtering data and simulations. Together these suppress ATI rings and enable an unprecedented highly-detailed quantitative match between strong-field ionization experiments in argon and the Coulomb-quantum orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA) theory. Velocity map images reveal fine modulations on the holographic spider-like interference fringes that form near the polarization axis. CQSFA theory traces this to the interference of three types of electron pathways. The level of agreement between experiment and theory allows sensitive determination of quantum phase differences and symmetries, providing an important tool for quantitative dynamical imaging in quantum systems., Comment: 13 Pages, 8 figures

The increasing use of renewable generation, power electronic devices, and nonlinear loads in power systems brings more severe interharmonic tones to the measurand, which can increase estimation errors of P-class PMUs, cause misoperation of protection relays, and even threaten the stability of the power systems. Therefore, the performance of the P-class synchrophasor estimator under interharmonic interference should be evaluated and new estimation schemes that can improve the operational robustness are needed for various protection and control applications. In this paper, a synchrophasor estimator design for P-class PMUs that introduces singular value decomposition to the least square algorithm based on the Taylor series is proposed. By constructing an optimization with proposed adjustable parameters, finite impulse response filters with high transition band attenuation are designed. Precision measurement plays a crucial role in all fields of science. The use of entangled sensors in quantum metrology improves the precision limit from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL). To date, most experiments beating the SQL are performed on the sensors which are well isolated under extreme conditions. However, it has not been realized in solid-state spin systems at ambient conditions, owing to its intrinsic complexity for the preparation and survival of pure and entangled quantum states. Here we show a full interferometer sequence beating the SQL by employing a hybrid multi-spin system, namely the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond. The interferometer sequence starts from a deterministic and joint initialization, undergoes entanglement and disentanglement of multiple spins, and ends up with projective measurement. In particular, the deterministic and joint initialization of NV negative state, NV electron spin, and two nuclear spins is realized at room temperature for the first time. By means of optimal control, non-local gates are implemented with an estimated fidelity above the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation. With these techniques combined, we achieve two-spin interference with a phase sensitivity of 1.79 \pm 0.06 dB beyond the SQL and three-spin 2.77 \pm 0.10 dB. Moreover, the deviations from the HL induced by experimental imperfections are completely accountable. In a conventional domain adaptation person Re-identification (Re-ID) task, both the training and test images in target domain are collected under the sunny weather. However, in reality, the pedestrians to be retrieved may be obtained under severe weather conditions such as hazy, dusty and snowing, etc. This paper proposes a novel Interference Suppression Model (ISM) to deal with the interference caused by the hazy weather in domain adaptation person Re-ID. A teacherstudent model is used in the ISM to distill the interference information at the feature level by reducing the discrepancy between the clear and the hazy intrinsic similarity matrix. Furthermore, in the distribution level, the extra discriminator is introduced to assist the student model make the interference feature distribution more clear. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves the superior performance on two synthetic datasets than the stateof-the-art methods. Carpet-type structures constitute an ideal laboratory to study and analyze the robustness of the interference process that underlies this phenomenon against the harmful effects of decoherence. Here, without losing any generality, for simplicity, the case of a particle with a mass m is considered and described by a localized state corresponding to the ground state of a square box of width w, which is released inside a wider cavity (with a width L > w). The effects of decoherence are then numerically investigated by means of a simple dynamical model that captures the essential features of the phenomenon under Markovian conditions, leaving aside extra complications associated with a more detailed dynamical description of the system-environment interaction. As it is shown, this model takes into account and reproduces the fact that decoherence effects are stronger as energy levels become more separated (in energy), which translates into a progressive collapse of the energy density matrix to its main diagonal. However, because energy dissipation is not considered, an analogous behavior is not observed in the position representation, where a proper spatial localization of the probability density does not take place, but rather a delocalized distribution. This result emphasizes the fact that classicality is reached only if both decoherence and dissipation coexist; otherwise, non-classical traits might still persist. Actually, as it is also shown, in the position representation some off-diagonal correlations indeed survive unless an additional spatial-type factor is included in the model. This makes evident the rather complex nature of the decoherence phenomenon and hence the importance to have a familiarity with how it manifests in different representations, particularly with the purpose to determine and design reliable control mechanisms., 18 pages, 11 figures

This paper addresses the problem that designing the transmit waveform and receive beamformer aims to maximize the receive radar SINR for secure dual-functional radar- communication (DFRC) systems, where the undesired multi- user interference (MUI) is transformed to useful power. In this system, the DFRC base station (BS) serves communication users (CUs) and detects the target simultaneously, where the radar target is regarded to be malicious since it might eavesdrop the transmitted information from BS to CUs. Inspired by the constructive interference (CI) approach, the phases of received signals at CUs are rotated into the relaxed decision region, and the undesired MUI is designed to contribute in useful power. Then, the convex approximation method (SCA) is adopted to tackle the optimization problem. Finally, numerical results are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which shows that it is viable to ensure the communication data secure adopting the techniques that we propose.

Temporal interfaces introduced by abrupt switching of the constitutive parameters of unbounded media enable unusual wave phenomena. So far, their explorations have been mostly limited to lossless media. Yet, non-Hermitian phenomena leveraging material loss and gain, and their balanced combination in parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems, have been opening new vistas in photonics. Here, we unveil the role that temporal interfaces offer in non-Hermitian physics, introducing the dual of PT symmetry for temporal boundaries. Our findings reveal unexplored interference mechanisms enabling extreme energy manipulation, and open new scenarios for time-switched metamaterials, connecting them with the broad opportunities offered by non-Hermitian phenomena.

Although recent advances in deep learning technology improved automatic speech recognition (ASR), it remains difficult to recognize speech when it overlaps other people's voices. Speech separation or extraction is often used as a front-end to ASR to handle such overlapping speech. However, deep neural network-based speech enhancement can generate `processing artifacts' as a side effect of the enhancement, which degrades ASR performance. For example, it is well known that single-channel noise reduction for non-speech noise (non-overlapping speech) often does not improve ASR. Likewise, the processing artifacts may also be detrimental to ASR in some conditions when processing overlapping speech with a separation/extraction method, although it is usually believed that separation/extraction improves ASR. In order to answer the question `Do we always have to separate/extract speech from mixtures?', we analyze ASR performance on observed and enhanced speech at various noise and interference conditions, and show that speech enhancement degrades ASR under some conditions even for overlapping speech. Based on these findings, we propose a simple switching algorithm between observed and enhanced speech based on the estimated signal-to-interference ratio and signal-to-noise ratio. As current- and next-generation astronomical instruments come online, they will generate an unprecedented deluge of data. Analyzing these data in real time presents unique conceptual and computational challenges, and their long-term storage and archiving is scientifically essential for generating reliable, reproducible results. We present here the real-time processing (RTP) system for the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), a radio interferometer endeavoring to provide the first detection of the highly redshifted 21 cm signal from Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization by an interferometer. The RTP system consists of analysis routines run on raw data shortly after they are acquired, such as calibration and detection of radio-frequency interference (RFI) events. RTP works closely with the Librarian, the HERA data storage and transfer manager which automatically ingests data and transfers copies to other clusters for post-processing analysis. Both the RTP system and the Librarian are public and open source software, which allows for them to be modified for use in other scientific collaborations. Symbol Level Precoding (SLP) has attracted significant research interest due to its ability to exploit interference for energy-efficient transmission. This paper proposes an unsupervised deep-neural network (DNN) based SLP framework. Instead of naively training a DNN architecture for SLP without considering the specifics of the optimization objective of the SLP domain, our proposal unfolds a power minimization SLP formulation based on the interior point method (IPM) proximal `log' barrier function. Furthermore, we extend our proposal to a robust precoding design under channel state information (CSI) uncertainty. The results show that our proposed learning framework provides near-optimal performance while reducing the computational cost from O(n7.5) to O(n3) for the symmetrical system case where n = number of transmit antennas = number of users. It is known that interference alignment (IA) plays an important role in improving the degree of freedom (DoF) of multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems. However, most of the traditional IA schemes suffer from the high computational complexity and require the global and instantaneous channel state information (CSI), both of which make them difficult to be extended to cellular MIMO systems. To handle these issues, two new interference alignment schemes, i.e., the retrospective interference regeneration (RIR) scheme and the beamforming based distributed retrospective interference alignment (B-DRIA) scheme, are proposed for cellular K-user MIMO downlink networks. For the RIR scheme, it adopts interference elimination algorithm to erase redundant symbols in inter-cell interference (ICI) signals, and then uses interference regeneration algorithm to avoid secondary interference. The RIR scheme obtains greater DoF gain than the retrospective interference alignment (RIA) scheme, but incurs performance degradation when the transceiver antennas ratio (TAR) approaches 1. Therefore, the B-DRIA scheme is further proposed. For the B-DRIA scheme, the cellular beamforming matrix is introduced to eliminate the ICI, and meanwhile distributed retrospective interference alignment algorithm is adopted to align inter-user interference (IUI). The simulation results show that the B-DRIA scheme obtains larger DoF than the RIR scheme locally. Specifically, when TAR approaches 1, two schemes obtain the same DoF. We consider an interferometer based on artificially induced topological superconductivity and chiral 1D Majorana fermions. The (non-topological) superconducting island inducing the superconducting correlations in the topological substrate is assumed to be floating. This allows probing the physics of interfering Majorana modes via microwave response, i.e., the frequency dependent impedance between the island and the earth. Namely, charging and discharging of the island is controlled by the time-delayed interference of chiral Majorana excitations in both normal and Andreev channels. We present a detailed derivation of a model to study effects of self-gravitation from semi-classical gravity, described by the Schrödinger–Newton equation, employing spin superposition states in inhomogeneous magnetic fields, as proposed recently for experiments searching for gravity induced entanglement. Approximations for the experimentally relevant limits are discussed. Results suggest that spin interferometry could provide a more accessible route towards an experimental test of quantum aspects of gravity than both previous proposals to test semi-classical gravity and the observation of gravitational spin entanglement.

This paper considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) downlink communication system where hybrid analog-digital beamforming is employed at the base station (BS). We formulate a power minimization problem by jointly optimizing hybrid beamforming at the BS and the response matrix at the RIS, under signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. The problem is highly challenging due to the non-convex SINR constraints as well as the non-convex unit-modulus constraints for both the phase shifts at the RIS and the analog beamforming at the BS. A penalty-based algorithm in conjunction with the manifold optimization technique is proposed to handle the problem, followed by an individual optimization method with much lower complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-art algorithm. Device-to-device (D2D) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are promising technologies to meet the challenges of the next generations of mobile communications in terms of network density and diversity for internet of things (IoT) services. This paper tackles the problem of maximizing the D2D sum-throughput in an IoT system underlaying a cellular network, through optimal channel and power allocation. NOMA is used to manage the interference between cellular users and full-duplex (FD) IoT devices. To this aim, mutual successive interference cancellation (SIC) conditions are identified to allow simultaneously the removal of the D2D devices interference at the level of the base station and the removal of the cellular users (CU) interference at the level of D2D devices. To optimally solve the joint channel and power allocation (PA) problem, a time-efficient solution of the PA problem in the FD context is elaborated. By means of graphical representation, the complex non-convex PA problem is efficiently solved in constant time complexity. This enables the global optimal resolution by successively solving the separate PA and channel assignment problems. The performance of the proposed strategy is compared against the classical state-of-the-art FD and HD scenarios, where SIC is not applied between CUs and IoT devices. Differing from the traditional method of achieving subwavelength interference, we have demonstrated the two-photon subwavelength interference effect of broadband chaotic light in a polarization-selective Michelson interferometer with an ultrafast two-photon absorption detector the first time, which is achieved by manipulating two-photon probability amplitudes involved in the interference. In theory, the two-photon polarization coherence matrix and probability amplitudes matrix are combined to develop polarized two-photon interference terms, which explains the experimental results well. In order to make better use of this interferometer to produce the subwavelength effect, we also make a series of error analyses to find out the relationship between the visibility and the degree of polarization error. Our experimental and theoretical results are helpful to understand the two-photon subwavelength interference, which sheds light on the development of the two-photon interference theory of vector light field based on quantum mechanics. Spectrum scarcity has surfaced as a prominent concern in wireless radio communications with the emergence of new technologies over the past few years. As a result, there is growing need for better understanding of the spectrum occupancy with newly emerging access technologies supporting the Internet of Things. In this paper, we present a framework to capture and model the traffic behavior of short-time spectrum occupancy for IoT applications in the shared bands to determine the existing interference. The proposed capturing method utilizes a software defined radio to monitor the short bursts of IoT transmissions by capturing the time series data which is converted to power spectral density to extract the observed occupancy. Furthermore, we propose the use of an unsupervised machine learning technique to enhance conventionally implemented energy detection methods. Our experimental results show that the temporal and frequency behavior of the spectrum can be well-captured using the combination of two models, namely, semi-Markov chains and a Poisson-distribution arrival rate. We conduct an extensive measurement campaign in different urban environments and incorporate the spatial effect on the IoT shared spectrum.

In this paper, we present the delay-constrained performance analysis of a multi-antenna-assisted multiuser non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based spectrum sharing system over Rayleigh fading channels. We derive analytical expressions for the sum effective rate (ER) for the downlink NOMA system under a peak interference constraint. In particular, we show the effect of the availability of different levels of channel state information (instantaneous and statistical) on the system performance. We also show the effect of different parameters of interest, including the peak tolerable interference power, the delay exponent, the number of antennas and the number of users, on the sum ER of the system under consideration. Franson interferometry is a well-known quantum measurement technique for probing photon-pair frequency correlations that is often used to certify time-energy entanglement. We demonstrate, for the first time, the complementary technique in the time basis called conjugate-Franson interferometry. It measures photon-pair arrival-time correlations, thus providing a valuable addition to the quantum toolbox. We obtain a conjugate-Franson interference visibility of $96\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1%$ without background subtraction for entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Our measured result surpasses the quantum-classical threshold by 25 standard deviations and validates the conjugate-Franson interferometer (CFI) as an alternative method for certifying time-energy entanglement. Moreover, the CFI visibility is a function of the biphoton's joint temporal intensity, and is therefore sensitive to that state's spectral phase variation: something that is not the case for Franson interferometry or Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry. We highlight the CFI's utility by measuring its visibilities for two different biphoton states: one without and the other with spectral phase variation, observing a 21% reduction in the CFI visibility for the latter. The CFI is potentially useful for applications in areas of photonic entanglement, quantum communications, and quantum networking.

We consider a wireless communication system, where a transmitting source is assisted by both a reconfigurable intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and a decode-and-forward half-duplex relay (hybrid IRS-relay scheme) to communicate with a destination receiver. All devices are equipped with multiple antennas, and transmissions occur in two stages. In stage 1, the source splits the transmit message into two sub-messages, transmitted to the destination and the relay, respectively, using block diagonalization to avoid interference. Both transmissions will benefit from the IRS. In stage 2, the relay re-encodes the received sub-message and forwards it (still through the IRS) to the destination. We optimize power allocations, beamformers, and configurations of the IRS in both stages, in order to maximize the achievable rate at the destination. The phenomenon of population interference, where a treatment assigned to one experimental unit affects another experimental unit's outcome, has received consider- able attention in standard randomized experiments. The complications produced by population interference in this setting are now readily recognized, and partial remedies are well known. Much less understood is the impact of population interference in panel experiments where treatment is sequentially randomized in the population, and the outcomes are observed at each time step. This paper proposes a general frame- work for studying population interference in panel experiments and presents new finite population estimation and inference results. Our findings suggest that, under mild assumptions, the addition of a temporal dimension to an experiment alleviates some of the challenges of population interference for certain estimands. In contrast, we show that the presence of carryover effects | that is, when past treatments may affect future outcomes | exacerbates the problem. Revisiting the special case of standard experiments with population interference, we prove a central limit theorem under weaker conditions than previous results in the literature and highlight the trade-off between flexibility in the design and the interference structure.

We consider receiver synchronization in the non-continguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM)-based radio system in the presence of in-band interfering signal, which occupies the frequency-band between blocks of subcarriers (SCs) used by this system, i.e. in-band of NC-OFDM receiver spectrum range. This paper proposes a novel preamble-based synchronization algorithm for estimation of the time and frequency offset based on the received signal cross-correlation with the reference preamble. Contrary to the existing algorithms, it is robust against in-band interference including narrowband interference at the cost of increased complexity. Moreover, in the interference-free system, the probability of frame synchronization error is improved in comparison to all simulated algorithms.

We present a collision model for the charging of a quantum battery by identical nonequilibrium qubit units. When the units are prepared in a mixture of energy eigenstates, the energy gain in the battery can be described by a classical random walk, where both average energy and variance grow linearly with time. Conversely, when the qubits contain quantum coherence, interference effects buildup in the battery and lead to a faster spreading of the energy distribution, reminiscent of a quantum random walk. This can be exploited for faster and more efficient charging of a battery initialized in the ground state. Specifically, we show that coherent protocols can yield higher charging power than any possible incoherent strategy, demonstrating a quantum speed-up at the level of a single battery. Pair production in inhomogeneous electric fields with symmetrical frequency chirp is studied numerically using the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. We investigate high- and low-frequency modes and consider two carrier envelope phases. Momentum spectrum is sensitive to chirp causing different interference effect for different spatial scales as well as the carrier phase of the external field. The reduced particle number is in general enhanced with increasing chirp. The effect of spatial scale of the field on the reduced particle number is also examined. It is found that it is enhanced at small spatial scale but is almost unchangeable at large spatial scales for the considered field parameters. On the other hand, at small spatial scale, the reduced particle number is enhanced by one or two orders when chirp is applied with the exception of cosine low-frequency field which is only a few times larger. Moreover it is found that the reduced particle number is further increased by symmetrical chirp at about two times by comparing to the usual asymmetrical chirp in high frequency field., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

It was recently argued that the pigeonhole principle, which states that if three pigeons are put into two pigeonholes then at least one pigeonhole must contain more than one pigeon, is violated in quantum systems [Y. Aharonov et al., PNAS 113, 532 (2016)]. An experimental verification of this effect was recently reported [M.-C. Chen et al., PNAS 116, 1549 (2019)]. In another recent experimental work, it was argued that two entities were observed to exchange properties without meeting each other [Z.-H. Liu et al., Nat. Commun. 11, 3006 (2020)]. Here we describe all these proposals and experiments as simple quantum interference effects, where no such dramatic conclusions appear. Besides demystifying some of the conclusions of the cited works, we also present physical insights for some interesting behaviors present in these treatments. We investigate a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output interference network in the presence of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The entire system is described by using a circuit-based model for the transmitters, receivers, and RISs. This is obtained by leveraging the electromagnetic tool of mutual impedances, which accounts for the signal propagation and the mutual coupling among closely-spaced scattering elements. An iterative and provably convergent optimization algorithm that maximizes the sum-rate of RIS-assisted multi-user interference channels is introduced. Motivated by the link between Anderson localisation on high-dimensional graphs and many-body localisation, we study the effect of periodic driving on Anderson localisation on random trees. The time dependence is eliminated in favour of an extra dimension, resulting in an extended graph wherein the disorder is correlated along the new dimension. The extra dimension increases the number of paths between any two sites and allows for interference between their amplitudes. We study the localisation problem within the forward scattering approximation (FSA) which we adapt to this extended graph. At low frequency, this favours delocalisation as the availability of a large number of extra paths dominates. By contrast, at high frequency, it stabilises localisation compared to the static system. These lead to a regime of re-entrant localisation in the phase diagram. State-of-the-art numerical simulations of quantum electrodynamical (QED) processes in strong laser fields rely on a semiclassical combination of classical equations of motion and QED rates, which are calculated in the locally constant field approximation. However, the latter approximation is unreliable if the amplitude of the fields, $a_0$, is comparable to unity. Furthermore, it cannot, by definition, capture interference effects that give rise to harmonic structure. Here we present an alternative numerical approach, which resolves these two issues by combining cycle-averaged equations of motion and QED rates calculated in the locally monochromatic approximation.
