We derive oscillating gravitational potential caused by an ultralight axion as the cosmic dark matter, assuming the Compton wavelength smaller than the horizon scale. A new oscillatory term is found which dominates the previously known one on scales larger than the quantum Jeans-scale. In the context of linear perturbations in cosmology this new term might be more relevant in future observation. Both the quantum stress in density perturbation and the quantum oscillation of the gravitational potential are derived in the zero-shear gauge. We show that the axion fluid in relativistic analysis is quite different from the relativistic and Newtonian zero-pressure fluids, corresponding to Newtonian fluid only in the density perturbation. The consistency demands the relativistic analysis valid on scales larger than the Compton wavelength., Comment: 6 pages, no figure, substantial revisions made, including title

The cosmological principle (CP), assuming spatially homogeneous and isotropic background geometry in the cosmological scale, is a fundamental assumption in modern cosmology. Recent observations of the galaxy redshift survey provide relevant data to confront the principle with observation. We present a homogeneity test for the matter distribution using the BOSS DR12 CMASS galaxy sample and clarify the ontological status of the CP. As a homogeneity criterion, we compare the observed data with similarly constructed random distributions using the number count in the truncated cones method. Comparisons are also made with three theoretical results using the same method: (i) the dark matter halo mock catalogs from the N-body simulation, (ii) the log-normal distributions derived from the theoretical matter power spectrum, and (iii) direct estimation from the theoretical power spectrum. We show that the observed distribution is statistically impossible as a random distribution up to 300 Mpc/h in radius, which is around the largest statistically available scale. However, comparisons with the three theoretical results show that the observed distribution is consistent with these theoretically derived results based on the CP. We show that the observed galaxy distribution (light) and the simulated dark matter distribution (matter) are quite inhomogeneous even on a large scale. Here, we clarify that there is no inconsistency surrounding the ontological status of the CP in cosmology. In practice, the CP is applied to the metric and the metric fluctuation is extremely small in all cosmological scales. This allows the CP to be valid as the averaged background in metric. The matter fluctuation, however, is decoupled from the small nature of metric fluctuation in the subhorizon scale. What is directly related to the matter in Einstein's gravity is the curvature, a quadratic derivative of the metric., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

The homogeneity of matter distribution at large scales, known as the cosmological principle, is a central assumption in the standard cosmological model. The case is testable though, thus no longer needs to be a principle. Here we perform a test for spatial homogeneity using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) sample by counting galaxies within a specified volume with the radius scale varying up to 300 Mpc/h. We directly confront the large-scale structure data with the definition of spatial homogeneity by comparing the averages and dispersions of galaxy number counts with allowed ranges of the random distribution with homogeneity. The LRG sample shows significantly larger dispersions of number counts than the random catalogues up to 300 Mpc/h scale, and even the average is located far outside the range allowed in the random distribution; the deviations are statistically impossible to be realized in the random distribution. This implies that the cosmological principle does not hold even at such large scales. The same analysis of mock galaxies derived from the N-body simulation, however, suggests that the LRG sample is consistent with the current paradigm of cosmology, thus the simulation is also not homogeneous in that scale. We conclude that the cosmological principle is not in the observed sky and nor is demanded to be there by the standard cosmological world model. This reveals the nature of the cosmological principle adopted in the modern cosmology paradigm, and opens new field of research in theoretical cosmology., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The special relativistic hydrodynamics with weak gravity is hitherto unknown in the literature. Whether such an asymmetric combination is possible was unclear. Here, the hydrodynamic equations with Poisson-type gravity considering fully relativistic velocity and pressure under the weak gravity and the action-at-a-distance limit are consistently derived from Einstein's general relativity. Analysis is made in the maximal slicing where the Poisson's equation becomes much simpler than our previous study in the zero-shear gauge. Also presented is the hydrodynamic equations in the first post-Newtonian approximation, now under the {\it general} hypersurface condition. Our formulation includes the anisotropic stress., Comment: 15 pages, no figure. Accepted in ApJ

We investigate aspects of axion as a coherently oscillating massive classical scalar field by analyzing third order perturbations in Einstein's gravity in the axion-comoving gauge. The axion fluid has its characteristic pressure term leading to an axion Jeans scale which is cosmologically negligible for a canonical axion mass. Our classically derived axion pressure term in Einstein's gravity is identical to the one derived in the non-relativistic quantum mechanical context in the literature. We show that except for the axion pressure term, the axion fluid equations are exactly the same as the general relativistic continuity and Euler equations of a zero-pressure fluid up to third order perturbation. The general relativistic density and velocity perturbations of the CDM in the CDM-comoving gauge are exactly the same as the Newtonian perturbations to the second order (in all scales), and the pure general relativistic corrections appearing from the third order are numerically negligible (in all scales as well) in the current paradigm of concordance cosmology. Therefore, here we prove that, in the super-Jeans scale, the classical axion can be handled as the Newtonian CDM fluid up to third order perturbation. We also show that the axion fluid supports the vector-type (rotational) perturbation from the third order. Our analysis includes the cosmological constant., Comment: 16 pages, no figures

We prove that the axion as a coherently oscillating scalar field acts as a cold dark matter (CDM) to the second-order perturbations in all cosmological scales including the super-horizon scale. The proof is made in the axion-comoving gauge. For a canonical mass, the axion pressure term causes deviation from the CDM only on scales smaller than the Solar System size. Beyond such a small scale the equations of the axion fluid are the same as the ones of the CDM based on the CDM-comoving gauge which are exactly identical to the Newtonian equations to the second order. We also show that the axion fluid does not generate the rotational (vector-type) perturbation even to the second order. Thus, in the case of axion fluid, we have the relativistic/Newtonian correspondence to the second order, even considering the rotational perturbation. Our analysis is made in the presence of the cosmological constant, and can be easily extended to the realistic situation including other components of fluids and fields., Comment: Phys. Lett. The decaying vacuum model (DV), treating dark energy as a varying vacuum, has been studied well recently. The vacuum energy decays linearly with the Hubble parameter in the late-times, $\rho_\Lambda(t) \propto H(t)$, and produces the additional matter component. We constrain the parameters of the DV model using the recent data-sets from supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, baryon acoustic oscillations, CMB, the Hubble rate and x-rays in galaxy clusters. It is found that the best fit of matter density contrast $\Omega_m$ in the DV model is much lager than that in $\Lambda$CDM model. We give the confidence contours in the $\Omega_m-h$ plane up to $3\sigma$ confidence level. Besides, the normalized likelihoods of $\Omega_m$ and $h$ are presented, respectively. %, Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted by European Physical Journal C

In this paper, a decay vacuum model ${\overline{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}=3\ensuremath{\sigma}{M}_{p}^{2}{H}_{0}H$ is revisited by detailed analysis of background evolution and perturbation equations. We show the imprints on CMB temperature and matter power spectrum from the effective coupling terms between dark sectors by comparing to the standard cosmological constant model and observational data points (WMAP7 and SDSS DR7). We find that the decay vacuum model can describe the expansion rate at late times as well as the standard cosmological constant model but it fails to simultaneously reproduce the observed CMB and matter power spectrum. Its generalization ${\overline{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}=3{M}_{p}^{2}({\ensuremath{\xi}}_{1}{H}_{0}H+{\ensuremath{\xi}}_{2}{H}^{2})$ is also discussed. Detailed analysis of the background evolution shows that the dimensionless parameter ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{2}$ would be zero to avoid the unnatural ``fine-tuning'' and to keep the positivity of energy density of dark matter and dark energy in the early epoch.

The dynamics of a tachyon attached to a Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati (DGP) brane is investigated. Exponential potential and inverse power law potential are explored, respectively. The quasi-attractor behavior, for which the universe will eventually go into a phase similar to the slow-roll inflation, is discovered in both cases of exponential potential and inverse power law potential. The equation of state (EOS) of the virtual dark energy for a single scalar can cross the phantom divide in the branch $\theta=-1$ for both potentials, while the EOS of the virtual dark energy for a single scalar can not cross this divide in the branch $\theta=1$., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figs, to appear in PLB

Non-linear nature of Einstein equation introduces genuine relativistic higher order corrections to the usual Newtonian fluid equations describing the evolution of cosmological perturbations. We study the effect of such novel non-linearities on the next-to-leading order matter and velocity power spectra for the case of pressureless, irrotational fluid in a flat Friedmann background. We find that pure general relativistic corrections are negligibly small over all scales. Our result guarantees that, in the current paradigm of standard cosmology, one can safely use Newtonian cosmology even in non-linear regimes., Comment: (v1) 5 pages, 1 figure; (v2) 4 pages, 2 figures, thoroughly revised including discussions on the peculiar velocity power spectrum, to appear in Astrophysical Journal

Here we generally prove that the axion as a coherently oscillating scalar field acts as a cold dark matter in nearly all cosmologically relevant scales. The proof is made in the linear perturbation order. Compared with our previous proof based on solutions, here we compare the equations in the axion with the ones in the cold dark matter, thus expanding the valid range of the proof. Deviation from purely pressureless medium appears in very small scale where axion reveals a peculiar equation of state. Our analysis is made in the presence of the cosmological constant, and our conclusions are valid in the presence of other fluid and field components., Comment: 4 pages, no figure

A new class of plane symmetric solution sourced by a perfect fluid is found in our recent work. An n-dimensional ($n\geq 4$) global plane symmetric solution of Einstein field equation generated by a perfect fluid source is investigated, which is the direct generalization of our previous 4-dimensional solution. One time-like Killing vector and $(n-2)(n-1)/2$ space-like Killing vectors, which span a Euclidean group $G_{(n-2)(n-1)/2}$, are permitted in this solution. The regions of the parameters constrained by weak, strong and dominant energy conditions for the source are studied. The boundary condition to match to n-dimensional Taub metric and Minkowski metric are analyzed respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 1 table; v2: 2 references added

Is Newton's gravity sufficient to handle the weakly nonlinear evolution stages of the cosmic large-scale structures? Here we resolve the issue by analytically deriving the density and velocity power spectra to the second order in the context of Einstein's gravity. The recently found pure general relativistic corrections appearing in the third-order perturbation contribute to power spectra to the second order. In this work the complete density and velocity power spectra to the second order are derived. The power transfers among different scales in the density power spectrum are estimated in the context of Einstein's gravity. The relativistic corrections in the density power spectrum are estimated to be smaller than the Newtonian one to the second order, but these could be larger than higher-order nonlinear Newtonian terms., Comment: to appear in Phys. Except for the presence of gravitational wave source term, the relativistic perturbation equations of a zero-pressure irrotational fluid in a flat Friedmann world model coincide exactly with the Newtonian ones to the second order in perturbations. Such a relativistic-Newtonian correspondence is available in a special gauge condition (the comoving gauge) in which all the variables are equivalently gauge invariant. In this work we compare our results with the ones in the synchronous gauge which has been used often in the literature. Although the final equations look simpler in the synchronous gauge, the variables have remnant gauge modes. Except for the presence of the gauge mode for the perturbed order variables, however, the equations in the synchronous gauge are gauge invariant and can be exactly identified as the Newtonian hydrodynamic equations in the Lagrangian frame. In this regard, the relativistic equations to the second order in the comoving gauge are the same as the Newtonian hydrodynamic equations in the Eulerian frame. We resolve several issues related to the two gauge conditions often to fully nonlinear orders in perturbations., Comment: 8 pages, no figure

Both for the background world model and its linear perturbations Newtonian cosmology coincides with the zero-pressure limits of relativistic cosmology. However, such successes in Newtonian cosmology are not purely based on Newton's gravity, but are rather guided ones by previously known results in Einstein's theory. The action-at-a-distance nature of Newton's gravity requires further verification from Einstein's theory for its use in the large-scale nonlinear regimes. We study the domain of validity of the Newtonian cosmology by investigating weakly nonlinear regimes in relativistic cosmology assuming a zero-pressure and irrotational fluid. We show that, first, if we ignore the coupling with gravitational waves the Newtonian cosmology is exactly valid even to the second order in perturbation. Second, the pure relativistic correction terms start appearing from the third order. Third, the correction terms are independent of the horizon scale and are quite small in the large-scale near the horizon. These conclusions are based on our special (and proper) choice of variables and gauge conditions. In a complementary situation where the system is weakly relativistic but fully nonlinear (thus, far inside the horizon) we can employ the post-Newtonian approximation. We also show that in the large-scale structures the post-Newtonian effects are quite small. As a consequence, now we can rely on the Newtonian gravity in analyzing the evolution of nonlinear large-scale structures even near the horizon volume., Comment: 8 pages, no figure

We present cosmological perturbations of kinetic components based on relativistic Boltzmann equations in the context of generalized gravity theories. Our general theory considers an arbitrary number of scalar fields generally coupled with the gravity, an arbitrary number of mutually interacting hydrodynamic fluids, and components described by the relativistic Boltzmann equations like massive/massless collisionless particles and the photon with the accompanying polarizations. We also include direct interactions among fluids and fields. The background FLRW model includes the general spatial curvature and the cosmological constant. We consider three different types of perturbations, and all the scalar-type perturbation equations are arranged in a gauge-ready form so that one can implement easily the convenient gauge conditions depending on the situation. In the numerical calculation of the Boltzmann equations we have implemented four different gauge conditions in a gauge-ready manner where two of them are new. By comparing solutions solved separately in different gauge conditions we can naturally check the numerical accuracy., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, revised thoroughly, to appear in Phys. Rev. D

We consider the large-scale cosmic structure generation by an inflation based on a pure f(R)-type gravity theory. Comparison with recent CMBR observations gives the following results: (1) The near Zel'dovich spectral conditions uniquely choose R^2-type gravity. (2) The R^2 gravity predicts specific nearly scale-invariant Zel'dovich spectra for both the scalar- and tensor-type perturbations. Thus, (3) the considered model survives current observational data. The COBE-DMR quadrupole data (4) give constraints on the coupling constant and the energy scale during inflation, and (5) require the gravitational wave contribution to be suppressed. (6) Therefore, future observations of (2) and (5) can provide strong tests of the inflation scenario based on R^2 gravity. Parallel analyses made in the conformally transformed Einstein frame give the observationally identical results., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Phys. Lett. B

The classical evolution and the quantum generation processes of the scalar- and tensor-type cosmological perturbations in the context of a broad class of generalized gravity theories are presented in unified forms. The exact forms of final spectra of the two types of structures generated during a generalized slow-roll inflation are derived. Results in generalized gravity are characterized by two additional parameters which are the coupling between gravity and field, and the nonminimal coupling in the kinetic part of the field. Our general results include widely studied gravity theories and inflation models as special cases, and show how the well known consistency relation and spectra in ordinary Einstein gravity inflation models are affected by the generalized nature of the gravity theories., Comment: 6 pages, equations (36,40) corrected

We consider the evolution of perturbed cosmological spacetime with multiple scalar fields in Einstein gravity. A complete set of scalar-type perturbation equations is presented in a gauge-ready form, and we derived the closed set of second-order differential equations in several useful forms. Conserved behaviors of the perturbed three-space curvature in the comoving gauge, $\phi_v$, under several conditions are clarified. Under the slow-roll conditions, the adiabatic and isocurvature modes decouple from each other, and in the large-scale limit we have (i) the adiabatic mode is generally conserved, (ii) for a couple of special potential the isocurvature modes decouple from each other and are described by conserved quantities, (iii) in the two field system, the isocurvature mode is described by a conserved quantity for the general potential., Comment: 6 pages, no figure, differs from gr-qc/9608018

We derive power spectra of the scalar- and tensor-type structures generated in an inflation model based on a massive non-minimally coupled scalar field with the strong coupling assumption. We make analyses in both the original-frame and the conformally transformed Einstein-frame. We derive contributions of both structures to the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation, and compare the contributions with the four-year COBE-DMR data. Previous study showed that sufficient amount of inflation requires a small coupling parameter. In such a case the spectra become near Zeldovich spectra, and the gravitational wave contribution becomes negligible compared with the scalar-type contribution which is testable in future CMBR experiments., Comment: 4 pages, no figure, To appear in Phys. A generic form of low-energy effective action of superstring theories with one-loop quantum correction is well known. Based on this action we derive the complete perturbation equations and general analytic solutions in the cosmological spacetime. Using the solutions we identify conserved quantities characterizing the perturbations: the amplitude of gravitational wave and the perturbed three-space curvature in the uniform-field gauge both in the large-scale limit, and the angular-momentum of rotational perturbation are conserved independently of changing gravity sector. Implications for calculating perturbation spectra generated in the inflation era based on the string action are presented., Comment: 5 pages, no figure, To appear in Phys. Rev. D

In this paper we address two points concerning the Sachs-Wolfe effect: (i) the gauge independence of the observable temperature anisotropy, and (ii) a gauge-invariant expression of the effect considering the most general situation of hydrodynamic perturbations. The first result follows because the gauge transformation of the temperature fluctuation at the observation event only contributes to the isotropic temperature change which, in practice, is absorbed into the definition of the background temperature. Thus, we proceed without fixing the gauge condition, and express the Sachs-Wolfe effect using the gauge-invariant variables., Comment: 5 pages, closer to published version

We present a set of equations describing the evolution of the scalar-type cosmological perturbation in a gravity with general quadratic order curvature coupling terms. Equations are presented in a gauge ready form, thus are ready to implement various temporal gauge conditions depending on the problems. The Ricci-curvature square term leads to a fourth-order differential equation for describing the spacetime fluctuations in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background., Comment: 5 pages, no figure, To appear in Phys. We analyse the evolution of the rotational type cosmological perturbation in a gravity with general quadratic order gravitational coupling terms. The result is expressed independently of the generalized nature of the gravity theory, and is simply interpreted as a conservation of the angular momentum., Comment: 5 pages, revtex, no figures
