We identify a route for the production of $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules in the $\textrm{X} \, ^1\Sigma^+$ rovibronic ground state that is compatible with efficient mixing of the atoms in optical lattices. We first construct a model for the excited-state structure using constants found by fitting to spectroscopy of the relevant $\textrm{a} \, ^3\Sigma^+ \rightarrow \textrm{b} \, ^3\Pi_1$ transitions at 181.5 G and 217.1 G. We then compare the predicted transition dipole matrix elements from this model to those found for the transitions that have been successfully used for STIRAP at 181.5 G. We form molecules by magnetoassociation on a broad interspecies Feshbach resonance at 352.7 G and explore the pattern of Feshbach states near 305 G. This allows us to navigate to a suitable initial state for STIRAP by jumping across an avoided crossing with radiofrequency radiation. We identify suitable transitions for STIRAP at 305 G. We characterize these transitions experimentally and demonstrate STIRAP to a single hyperfine level of the ground state with a one-way efficiency of 85(4)%., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Mergoassociation of two ultracold atoms to form a weakly bound molecule can occur when two optical traps that each contain a single atom are merged. Molecule formation occurs at an avoided crossing between a molecular state and the lowest motional state of the atom pair. We develop the theory of mergoassociation for pairs of nonidentical nonspherical traps. We develop a coupled-channel approach for the relative motion of the two atoms and present results for pairs of cylindrically symmetrical traps as a function of their anisotropy. We focus on the strength of the avoided crossing responsible for mergoassociation. We also develop an approximate method that gives insight into the dependence of the crossing strength on aspect ratio.

We study collisions of ultracold CaF molecules in strong static electric fields. Such fields allow the creation of long-range barriers in the interaction potential, which prevent the molecules reaching the short-range region where inelastic and other loss processes are likely to occur. We carry out coupled-channel calculations of rate coefficients for elastic scattering and loss. We develop an efficient procedure for including energetically well-separated rotor functions in the basis set via a Van Vleck transformation. We show that shielding is particularly efficient for CaF and allows the rate of 2-body loss processes to be reduced by a factor of $10^7$ or more at a field of 23 kV/cm. The loss rates remain low over a substantial range of fields. Electron and nuclear spins cause strong additional loss in some small ranges of field, but have little effect elsewhere. We report the first observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances between ${}^{173}$Yb and $^{133}$Cs. In a mixture of Cs atoms prepared in the $(f=3, m_f=3)$ state and unpolarized fermionic ${}^{173}$Yb we observe resonant atom loss due to two sets of magnetic Feshbach resonances around 622~G and 702~G. Resonances for individual Yb nuclear spin components $m_{i,\mathrm{Yb}}$ are split by its interaction with the Cs electronic spin, which also provides the main coupling mechanism for the observed resonances. The observed splittings and relative resonance strengths are in good agreement with theoretical predictions from coupled-channel calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The beyond-mean-field Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction is ubiquitous in dilute ultracold quantum gases. However, its effects are often elusive due to the typically much larger influence of the mean-field energy. In this work, we study an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb with tunable attractive interspecies interactions. The LHY effects manifest in the formation of self-bound quantum liquid droplets and the expansion dynamics of the gas-phase sample. A liquid-to-gas phase diagram is obtained by measuring the critical atom numbers below which the self-bound behavior disappears. In stark contrast to trapped gas-phase condensates, the gas-phase mixture formed following the liquid-to-gas phase transition shows an anomalous expansion featuring a larger release energy for increasing mean-field attractions., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We study three-atom inelastic scattering in ultracold \textsuperscript{39}K near a Feshbach resonance of intermediate coupling strength. The non-universal character of such resonance leads to an abnormally large Efimov absolute length scale and a relatively small effective range $r_e$, allowing the features of the \textsuperscript{39}K Efimov spectrum to be better isolated from the short-range physics. Meticulous characterization of and correction for finite temperature effects ensure high accuracy on the measurements of these features at large-magnitude scattering lengths. For a single Feshbach resonance, we unambiguously locate four distinct features in the Efimov structure. Three of these features form ratios that obey the Efimov universal scaling to within 10\%, while the fourth feature, occurring at a value of scattering length closest to $r_e$, instead deviates from the universal value., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

We investigate Cs+Cs scattering in excited Zeeman and hyperfine states. We calculate the real and imaginary parts of the s-wave scattering length; the imaginary part directly provides the rate coefficient for 2-body inelastic loss, while the real part allows us to identify regions of magnetic field where 3-body recombination will be slow. We identify field regions where Cs in its $(f,m_f)=(3,+2)$ and $(3,+1)$ states may be stable enough to allow Bose-Einstein condensation, and additional regions for these and the $(3,0)$ and $(3,-3)$ states where high-density clouds should be long-lived., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

MOLSCAT is a general-purpose package for performing non-reactive quantum scattering calculations for atomic and molecular collisions using coupled-channel methods. Simple atom-molecule and molecule-molecule collision types are coded internally and additional ones may be handled with plug-in routines. Plug-in routines may include external magnetic, electric or photon fields (and combinations of them). Simple interaction potentials are coded internally and more complicated ones may be handled with plug-in routines. BOUND is a general-purpose package for performing calculations of bound-state energies in weakly bound atomic and molecular systems using coupled-channel methods. It solves the same sets of coupled equations as MOLSCAT, and can use the same plug-in routines if desired, but with different boundary conditions. FIELD is a development of BOUND that locates external fields at which a bound state exists with a specified energy. One important use is to locate the positions of magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance positions in ultracold collisions. Versions of these programs before version 2019.0 were released separately. However, there is a significant degree of overlap between their internal structures and usage specifications. This manual therefore describes all three, with careful identification of parts that are specific to one or two of the programs., Comment: 209 pages. We investigate the effect of far-off-resonant trapping light on ultracold bosonic RbCs molecules. We use kHz-precision microwave spectroscopy to measure the differential AC Stark shifts between the ground and first excited rotational levels of the molecule with hyperfine-state resolution. We demonstrate through both experiment and theory that coupling between neighboring hyperfine states manifests in rich structure with many avoided crossings. This coupling may be tuned by rotating the polarization of the linearly polarized trapping light. A combination of spectroscopic and parametric heating measurements allows complete characterization of the molecular polarizability at a wavelength of 1550~nm in both the ground and first excited rotational states., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate coherent control of both the rotational and hyperfine state of ultracold, chemically stable $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules with external microwave fields. We create a sample of ~2000 molecules in the lowest hyperfine level of the rovibronic ground state N = 0. We measure the transition frequencies to 8 different hyperfine levels of the N = 1 state at two magnetic fields ~23 G apart. We determine accurate values of rotational and hyperfine coupling constants that agree well with previous calculations. We observe Rabi oscillations on each transition, allowing complete population transfer to a selected hyperfine level of N = 1. Subsequent application of a second microwave pulse allows transfer of molecules back to a different hyperfine level of N = 0., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We observe interspecies Feshbach resonances due to s-wave bound states in ultracold $^{39}$K-$^{133}$Cs scattering for three different spin mixtures. The resonances are observed as joint atom loss and heating of the K sample. We perform least-squares fits to obtain improved K-Cs interaction potentials that reproduce the observed resonances, and carry out coupled-channel calculations to characterize the scattering and bound-state properties for $^{39}$K-Cs, $^{40}$K-Cs and $^{41}$K-Cs. Our results open up the possibilities of tuning interactions in K-Cs atomic mixtures and of producing ultracold KCs molecules., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We report the binding energy of $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules in their rovibrational ground state measured using an offset-free optical frequency comb based on difference frequency generation technology. We create molecules in the absolute ground state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) with a transfer efficiency of 88\%. By measuring the absolute frequencies of our STIRAP lasers, we find the energy-level difference from an initial weakly-bound Feshbach state to the rovibrational ground state with a resolution of 5 kHz over an energy-level difference of more than 114 THz; this lets us discern the hyperfine splitting of the ground state. Combined with theoretical models of the Feshbach state binding energies and ground-state hyperfine structure, we determine a zero-field binding energy of $h\times114\,268\,135\,237(5)(50)$ kHz. We calculate and analyze Feshbach resonance spectra for ultracold Yb($^1$S$_0$) + Yb($^3$P$_2$) collisions as a function of an interatomic potential scaling factor $\lambda$ and external magnetic field. We show that, at zero field, the resonances are distributed randomly in $\lambda$, but that signatures of quantum chaos emerge as a field is applied. The random zero-field distribution arises from superposition of structured spectra associated with individual total angular momenta. In addition, we show that the resonances in magnetic field in the experimentally accessible range 400 to 2000~G are chaotically distributed, with strong level repulsion that is characteristic of quantum chaos., Comment: 5 Pages, 3 figures. We report the creation of a sample of over 1000 ultracold $^{87}$RbCs molecules in the lowest rovibrational ground state, from an atomic mixture of $^{87}$Rb and Cs, by magnetoassociation on an interspecies Feshbach resonance followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). We measure the binding energy of the RbCs molecule to be $h c \times 3811.576(1)$ cm$^{-1}$ and the $|v''=0, J''=0>$ to $|v''=0, J''=2>$ splitting to be $h \times 2940.09(6)$ MHz. Stark spectroscopy of the rovibrational ground state yields an electric dipole moment of 1.225(3)(8) D, where the values in parentheses are the statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively. We demonstrate that a space-fixed dipole moment of 0.355(2)(4) D is accessible in RbCs, which is substantially higher than in previous work., 5 pages, 4 figures + supplementary material

We report the production of $^{87}$RbCs Feshbach molecules in a crossed-beam dipole trap. A mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs is cooled close to quantum degeneracy before an interspecies Feshbach resonance at 197\,G is used to associate up to $\sim5000$ molecules with a temperature of $\sim300$\,nK. The molecules are confined in the dipole trap with a lifetime of 0.21(1)\,s, long enough for future experiments exploring optical transfer to the absolute ground state. We have measured the magnetic moment of the Feshbach molecules in a magnetic bias field range between 181 and 185\,G to demonstrate the ability to control the character of the molecular state. In addition we have performed Feshbach spectroscopy in a field range from 0 to 1200\,G and located three previously unobserved resonances at high magnetic fields., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We explore the feasibility of producing ultracold diatomic molecules with nonzero electric and magnetic dipole moments by magnetically associating two atoms, one with zero electron spin and one with nonzero spin. Feshbach resonances arise through the dependence of the hyperfine coupling on internuclear distance. We survey the Feshbach resonances in diatomic systems combining the nine stable alkali-metal isotopes with those of Yb, focussing on the illustrative examples of RbYb and CsYb. We show that the resonance widths may expressed as a product of physically comprehensible terms in the framework of Fermi's Golden Rule. The resonance widths depend strongly on the background scattering length, which may be adjusted by selecting the Yb isotope, and on the hyperfine coupling constant and the magnetic field. We report the observation of interspecies Feshbach resonances in an optically trapped mixture of $^{85}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs. We measure 14 interspecies features in the lowest spin channels for a magnetic field range from 0 to 700 G and show that they are in good agreement with coupled-channel calculations. The interspecies background scattering length is close to zero over a large range of magnetic fields, permitting the sensitive detection of Feshbach resonances through interspecies thermalisation. We have carried out bound-state and low-energy quantum scattering calculations on He + NH (triplet Sigma) in magnetic fields, with the NH molecule in its n=1 rotationally excited states. We have explored the pattern of levels as a function of magnetic field and identified the nearly good quantum numbers in different regimes. We have used the bound-state calculations to locate low-energy Feshbach resonances. When the magnetic field is used to tune across such a resonance, the real and imaginary part of the scattering length show asymmetric oscillations and peaks with amplitude between 1 and 3 Angstroms. The scattering length does not pass through a pole at resonance. The resonant behavior is characterized by a complex resonant scattering length a_res. The corresponding inelastic cross sections show troughs as well as peaks near resonance. This may be important for efforts to achieve evaporative and sympathetic cooling for molecules, because it offers the hope that inelastic trap losses can be reduced by tuning close to a Feshbach resonance., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

The Rb-NH interaction is investigated as a prototype for interactions between alkali metal atoms and stable molecules. For spin-aligned Rb and NH that interact on a quartet surface ($^4A''$), the interaction is relatively weak, with a well depth of 0.078 eV. However, there are also doublet surfaces of ion-pair character that are very much deeper (well depth 1.372 eV) and may be important for atom - molecule collision rates. Similar deeply bound ion-pair states are likely to exist for other alkali atom -- molecule pairs.
