We investigate physical reasons for high dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust}\gtrsim 40$ K) observed in some high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies using analytic models. We consider two models that can be treated analytically: the radiative transfer (RT) model, {where a broad distribution of values for $T_\mathrm{dust}$ is considered}, and the one-tempearture (one-$T$) model, which assumes {uniform $T_\mathrm{dust}$}. These two extremes {serve to bracket the most realistic scenario}. We adopt the Kennicutt--Schmidt (KS) law to relate stellar radiation field to gas surface density, and vary the dust-to-gas ratio. As a consequence, our model is capable of predicting the relation between the surface density of star formation rate ($\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$) or dust mass ($\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$) and $T_\mathrm{dust}$. We show that the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$ observed at $z\gtrsim 5$ favour low dust-to-gas ratios ($\lesssim 10^{-3}$). An enhanced star formation compared with the KS law gives an alternative explanation for the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$. The dust temperatures are similar between the two (RT and one-$T$) models as long as we use ALMA Bands 6--8. We also examine the relation among $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, $\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$ and $T_\mathrm{dust}$ without assuming the KS law, and confirm the consistency with the actual observational data at $z>5$. In the one-$T$ model, we also examine a clumpy dust distribution, which predicts lower $T_\mathrm{dust}$ because of the leakage of stellar radiation. We compute the evolution of the grain size distribution (GSD) in a suite of numerical simulations of an isolated Milky-Way-like galaxy using the $N$-body/smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics code {\sc Gadget-4}. The full GSD is sampled on a logarithmically spaced grid with 30 bins, and its evolution is calculated self-consistently with the hydrodynamical and chemical evolution of the galaxy using a state-of-the-art star formation and feedback model. In previous versions of this model, the GSD tended to be slightly biased towards larger grains and the extinction curve had a tendency to be flatter than the observations. This work addresses these issues by considering the diffusion of dust and metals through turbulence on subgrid scales and introducing a multi-phase subgrid model that enables a smoother transition from diffuse to dense gas. We show that diffusion can significantly enhance the production of small grains and improve the agreement with the observed dust extinction curve in the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 23 figures

Some studies suggest that the dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{d}$) in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) are high. However, possible observational bias in $T_\mathrm{d}$ is yet to be understood. Thus, we perform a simple test using random realizations of LBGs with various stellar masses, dust temperatures, and dust-to-stellar mass ratios, and examine how the sample detected by ALMA is biased in terms of $T_\mathrm{d}$. We show that ALMA tends to miss high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ objects even at total dust luminosity. LBGs are, however, basically selected by the stellar UV luminosity. The dust-temperature bias in a UV-selected sample is complicated because of the competing effects between high $T_\mathrm{d}$ and low dust abundance. For ALMA Band 6, there is no tendency of high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ LBGs being more easily detected in our experiment. Thus, we suggest that the observed trend of high $T_\mathrm{d}$ in $z\gtrsim 5$ LBGs is real. We also propose that the 450 $\mu$m band is useful in further clarifying the dust temperatures. To overcome the current shallowness of 450 $\mu$m observations, we examine a future Antarctic 30-m class telescope with a suitable atmospheric condition for wavelengths $\lesssim 450~\mu$m, where the detection is not confusion-limited. We find that, with this telescope, an $L_\mathrm{IR}$-selected sample with $\log(L_\mathrm{IR}/\mathrm{L}_{\odot})>11$ is constructed for $z\gtrsim 5$, and detection in the intermediate-$M_\star$ (stellar mass) range [$9, Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The radiative properties of interstellar dust are affected not only by the grain size distribution but also by the grain porosity. We develop a model for the evolution of size-dependent grain porosity and grain size distribution over the entire history of galaxy evolution. We include stellar dust production, supernova dust destruction, shattering, coagulation, and accretion. Coagulation is {assumed to be} the source of grain porosity. We use a one-zone model with a constant dense gas fraction ($\eta_\mathrm{dense}$), which regulates the balance between shattering and coagulation. We find that porosity develops after small grains are sufficiently created by the interplay between shattering and accretion (at age $t\sim 1$ Gyr for star formation time-scale $\tau_\mathrm{SF}=5$ Gyr) and are coagulated. The filling factor drops down to 0.3 at grain radii $\sim 0.03~\mu$m for $\eta_\mathrm{dense}=0.5$. The grains are more porous for smaller $\eta_\mathrm{dense}$ because small grains, from which porous coagulated grains form, are more abundant. We also calculate the extinction curves based on the above results. The porosity steepens the extinction curve significantly for silicate, but not much for amorphous carbon. The porosity also increases the collisional cross-sections and produces slightly more large grains through the enhanced coagulation; however, the extinction curve does not necessarily become flatter because of the steepening effect by porosity. An important aspect of quenching star formation is the removal of the cold interstellar medium (ISM; non-ionised gas and dust) from a galaxy. In addition, dust grains can be destroyed in a hot or turbulent medium. The adopted timescale of dust removal usually relies on uncertain theoretical estimates. It is tricky to track the dust removal, because usually dust is constantly replenished by consecutive generations of stars. Our objective is to measure observationally the timescale of dust removal. We here explore an approach to select galaxies which do have detectable amounts of dust and cold ISM but exhibit a low current dust production rate. Any decrease of the dust and gas content as a function of the age of such galaxies therefore must be attributed to processes governing the ISM removal. We used a sample of galaxies detected by Herschel in the far-infrared with visually assigned early-type morphology or spirals with red colours. We also obtained JCMT/SCUBA-2 observations for five of them. We discovered an exponential decline of the dust-to-stellar mass ratio with age, which we interpret as an evolutionary trend of dust removal from these galaxies. For the first time we directly measure the dust removal timescale in such galaxies to be tau=(2.5+-0.4) Gyr (the corresponding half-life time is (1.75+-0.25) Gyr). This quantity may be used in models in which it must be assumed a priori and cannot be derived. Any process which removes dust in these galaxies, such as dust grain destruction, cannot happen on shorter timescales. The timescale is comparable to the quenching timescales found in simulations for galaxies with similar stellar masses. The dust is likely of internal, not external origin. We compute the evolution of interstellar dust in a hydrodynamic simulation of an isolated disc galaxy. We newly implement the evolution of full grain size distribution by sampling 32 grid points on the axis of the grain radius. We solve it consistently with the chemical enrichment and hydrodynamic evolution of the galaxy. This enables us to theoretically investigate spatially resolved evolution of grain size distribution in a galaxy. The grain size distribution evolves from a large-grain-dominated ($\gtrsim 0.1~\mu$m) phase to a small-grain production phase, eventually converging to a power-law-like grain size distribution similar to the so-called MRN distribution. We find that the small-grain abundance is higher in the dense ISM in the early epoch ($t\lesssim 1$ Gyr) because of efficient dust growth by accretion, while coagulation makes the small-grain abundance less enhanced in the dense ISM later. This leads to steeper extinction curves in the dense ISM than in the diffuse ISM in the early phase, while they show the opposite trend later. The radial trend is also described by faster evolution in the inner part. We also confirm that the simulation reproduces the observed trend in the relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity, and in the radial gradients of dust-to-gas ratio and dust-to-metal ratio. We investigate the abundance and properties (especially, grain size) of dust in galaxy halos using available observational data in the literature. There are two major sets of data. One is (i) the reddening curves at redshifts $z\sim 1$ and 2 derived for Mg II absorbers, which are assumed to trace the medium in galaxy halos. The other is (ii) the cosmic extinction up to $z\sim 2$ mainly traced by distant background quasars. For (i), the observed reddening curves favor a grain radius of $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m for silicate, while graphite is not supported because of its strong 2175 \AA\ bump. Using amorphous carbon improves the fit to the reddening curves compared with graphite if the grain radius is $a\lesssim 0.03~\mu$m. For (ii), the cosmic extinction requires $\eta\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ ($\eta$ is the ratio of the halo dust mass to the stellar mass; the observationally suggested value is $\eta\sim 10^{-3}$) for silicate if $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m as suggested by the reddening curve constraint. Thus, for silicate, we do not find any grain radius that satisfies both (i) and (ii) unless the halo dust abundance is much larger than suggested by the observations. For amorphous carbon, in contrast, a wide range of grain radius ($a\sim 0.01$--0.3~$\mu$m) is accepted by the cosmic extinction; thus, we find that a grain radius range of $a\sim 0.01$--0.03 $\mu$m is supported by combining (i) and (ii). To understand the evolution of extinction curve, we calculate the dust evolution in a galaxy using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations incorporating stellar dust production, dust destruction in supernova shocks, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering. The dust species are separated into carbonaceous dust and silicate. The evolution of grain size distribution is considered by dividing grain population into large and small gains, which allows us to estimate extinction curves. We examine the dependence of extinction curves on the position, gas density, and metallicity in the galaxy, and find that extinction curves are flat at $t \lesssim 0.3$ Gyr because stellar dust production dominates the total dust abundance. The 2175 \AA\ bump and far-ultraviolet (FUV) rise become prominent after dust growth by accretion. At $t \gtrsim 3$ Gyr, shattering works efficiently in the outer disc and low density regions, so extinction curves show a very strong 2175 \AA\ bump and steep FUV rise. The extinction curves at $t\gtrsim 3$ Gyr are consistent with the Milky Way extinction curve, which implies that we successfully included the necessary dust processes in the model. The outer disc component caused by stellar feedback has an extinction curves with a weaker 2175 \AA\ bump and flatter FUV slope. The strong contribution of carbonaceous dust tends to underproduce the FUV rise in the Small Magellanic Cloud extinction curve, which supports selective loss of small carbonaceous dust in the galaxy. Extinction curves, especially those in the Milky Way (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), have provided us with a clue to the dust properties in the nearby Universe. We examine whether or not these extinction curves can be explained by well known dust evolution processes. We treat the dust production in stellar ejecta, destruction in supernova shocks, dust growth by accretion and coagulation, and dust disruption by shattering. To make a survey of the large parameter space possible, we simplify the treatment of the grain size distribution evolution by adopting the `two-size approximation', in which we divide the grain population into small ($\lesssim 0.03~\mu$m) and large ($\gtrsim 0.03~\mu$m) grains. It is confirmed that the MW extinction curve can be reproduced in reasonable ranges for the time-scale of the above processes with a silicate-graphite mixture. This indicates that the MW extinction curve is a natural consequence of the dust evolution through the above processes. We also find that the same models fail to reproduce the SMC/LMC extinction curves. Nevertheless, this failure can be remedied by giving higher supernova destruction rates for small carbonaceous dust and considering amorphous carbon for carbonaceous dust; these modification fall in fact in line with previous studies. Therefore, we conclude that the current dust evolution scenario composed of the aforementioned processes is successful in explaining the extinction curves. We reconsider the origin and processing of dust in elliptical galaxies. We theoretically formulate the evolution of grain size distribution, taking into account dust supply from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and dust destruction by sputtering in the hot interstellar medium (ISM), whose temperature evolution is treated by including two cooling paths: gas emission and dust emission (i.e. gas cooling and dust cooling). With our new full treatment of grain size distribution, we confirm that dust destruction by sputtering is too efficient to explain the observed dust abundance even if AGB stars continue to supply dust grains, and that, except for the case where the initial dust-to-gas ratio in the hot gas is as high as $\sim 0.01$, dust cooling is negligible compared with gas cooling. However, we show that, contrary to previous expectations, cooling does not help to protect the dust; rather, the sputtering efficiency is raised by the gas compression as a result of cooling. We additionally consider grain growth after the gas cools down. Dust growth by the accretion of gas-phase metals in the cold medium increase the dust-to-gas ratio up to $\sim 10^{-3}$ if this process lasts >10/(n_H/10^3 cm^{-3}) Myr, where $n_\mathrm{H}$ is the number density of hydrogen nuclei. We show that the accretion of gas-phase metals is a viable mechanism of increasing the dust abundance in elliptical galaxies to a level consistent with observations, and that the steepness of observed extinction curves is better explained with grain growth by accretion., 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively) are observed to have characteristic dust extinction curves that are quite different from those of the Galaxy (e.g., strength of the 2175 A bump). Although the dust composition and size distribution of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) that can self-consistently explain their observed extinction curves have been already proposed, it remain unclear whether and how the required dust properties can be achieved in the formation histories of the MCs. We therefore investigate the time evolution of the dust properties of the MCs and thereby derive their extinction curves using one-zone chemical evolution models with formation and evolution of small and large silicate and carbonaceous dust grains and dusty winds associated with starburst events. We find that the observed SMC extinction curve without a conspicuous 2175 A bump can be reproduced well by our SMC model, if the small carbon grains can be selectively lost through the dust wind during the latest starburst about 0.2 Gyr ago. We also find that the LMC extinction curve with a weak 2175 A bump can be reproduced by our LMC model with less efficient removal of dust through dust wind. Dust grains grow their sizes in the interstellar clouds (especially in molecular clouds) by accretion and coagulation. Here we model and test these processes by examining the consistency with the observed variation of the extinction curves in the Milky Way. We find that, if we simply use the parameters used in previous studies, the model fails to explain the flattening of far-UV extinction curve for large $R_V$ (flatness of optical extinction curve) and the existence of carbon bump even in flat extinction curves. This discrepancy is resolved by adopting a `tuned' model, in which coagulation of carbonaceous dust is less efficient (by a factor of 2) and that of silicate is more efficient with the coagulation threshold removed. The tuned model is also consistent with the relation between silicon depletion (indicator of accretion) and $R_V$ if the duration of accretion and coagulation is >100(n_H/10^3 cm^{-3})^{-1} Myr, where n_H is the number density of hydrogen nuclei in the cloud. We also examine the relations between each of the extinction curve features (UV slope, far-UV curvature, and carbon bump strength) and $R_V$. The correlation between UV slope and $R_V$, which is the strongest among the three correlations, is well reproduced by the tuned model. For far-UV curvature and carbon bump strength, the observational data are located between the tuned model and the original model without tuning, implying that the large scatters in the observational data can be explained by the sensitive response to the coagulation efficiency. The overall success of the tuned model indicates that accretion and coagulation are promising mechanisms of producing the variation of extinction curves in the Milky Way, although we do not exclude possibilities of other dust-processing mechanisms changing extinction curves., 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the extinction curves of young galaxies in which dust is supplied from Type II supernovae (SNe II) and/or pair instability supernovae (PISNe). Since at high redshift (z>5), low-mass stars cannot be dominant sources for dust grains, SNe II and PISNe, whose progenitors are massive stars with short lifetimes, should govern the dust production. Here, we theoretically investigate the extinction curves of dust produced by SNe II and PISNe, taking into account reverse shock destruction induced by collision with ambient interstellar medium. We find that the extinction curve is sensitive to the ambient gas density around a SN, since the efficiency of reverse shock destruction strongly depends on it. The destruction is particularly efficient for small-sized grains, leading to a flat extinction curve in the optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. Such a large ambient density as n_H > 1 cm^{-3} produces too flat an extinction curve to be consistent with the observed extinction curve for SDSS J104845.05+463718.3 at z=6.2. Although the extinction curve is highly sensitive to the ambient density, the hypothesis that the dust is predominantly formed by SNe at z~6 is still allowed by the current observational constraints. For further quantification, the ambient density should be obtained by some other methods. Aims:In some of the lensed quasars, color differences between multiple images are observed at optical/near-infrared wavelengths. There are three possible origins of the color differences: intrinsic variabilities of quasars, differential dust extinction, and quasar microlensing. We examine how these three possible scenarios can reproduce the observed chromaticity. Methods:We evaluate how much color difference between multiple images can be reproduced by the above three possible scenarios with realistic models; (i) an empirical relation for intrinsic variabilities of quasars, (ii) empirical relations for dust extinction and theoretically predicted inhomogeneity in galaxies, or (iii) a theoretical model for quasar accretion disks and magnification patterns in the vicinity of caustics. Results:We find that intrinsic variabilities of quasars cannot be a dominant source responsible for observed chromatic features in multiple quasars. In contrast, either dust extinction or quasar microlensing can nicely reproduce the observed color differences between multiple images in most of the lensed quasars. Taking into account the time interval between observations at different wavebands in our estimations, quasar microlensing is a more realistic scenario to reproduce the observed color differences than dust extinction. All the observed color differences presented in this paper can be explained by a combination of these two effects, but monitoring observations at multiple wavebands are necessary to disentangle these., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, accepted to A&A

A recent data analysis of the far-infrared (FIR) map of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds has shown that there is a tight correlation between two FIR colours: the 60 um-100 um and 100 um-140 um colours. This FIR colour relation called ``main correlation'' can be interpreted as indicative of a sequence of various interstellar radiation fields with a common FIR optical property of grains. In this paper, we constrain the FIR optical properties of grains by comparing the calculated FIR colours with the observational main correlation. We show that neither of the ``standard'' grain species (i.e. astronomical silicate and graphite grains) reproduces the main correlation. However, if the emissivity index at ~ 100--200 um is changed to ~ 1--1.5 (not ~ 2 as the above two species), the main correlation can be successfully explained. Thus, we propose that the FIR emissivity index is ~ 1--1.5 for the dust in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds at ~ 100--200 um. We investigate the radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of young star-forming galaxies and how they evolve with time. The duration and luminosity of the nonthermal radio emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) are constrained by using the observational radio SEDs of SBS 0335-052 and I Zw 18, which are the two lowest-metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxies in the nearby universe. The typical radio ``fluence'' for SNRs in SBS 0335-052, that is the radio energy emitted per SNR over its radiative lifetime, is estimated to be $\sim 6$--$22\times 10^{22} {\rm W Hz^{-1} yr}$ at 5 GHz. On the other hand, the radio fluence in I Zw 18 is $\sim 1$--$3\times 10^{22} {\rm W Hz^{-1} yr}$ at 5 GHz. We discuss the origin of this variation and propose scaling relations between synchrotron luminosity and gas density. We have also predicted the time dependence of the radio spectral index and of the spectrum itself, for both the ``active'' (SBS 0335-052) and ``passive'' (I Zw 18) cases. These models enable us to roughly age date and classify radio spectra of star-forming galaxies into active/passive classes. In the early epoch of galaxy evolution, dust is only supplied by supernovae (SNe). With the aid of a new physical model of dust production by SNe developed by Nozawa et al. (2003) (N03), we constructed a model of dust emission from forming galaxies on the basis of the theoretical framework of Takeuchi et al. (2003) (T03). N03 showed that the produced dust species depends strongly on the mixing within SNe. We treated both unmixed and mixed cases and calculated the infrared (IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) of forming galaxies for both cases. Our model SED is less luminous than the SED of T03 model by a factor of 2-3. The difference is due to our improved treatment of UV photon absorption cross section, as well as different grain size and species newly adopted in this work. The SED for the unmixed case is found to have an enhanced near to mid-IR (N-MIR) continuum radiation in its early phase of the evolution (age < 10^{7.25} yr) compared with that for the mixed case. The strong N--MIR continuum is due to the emission from Si grains, which only exist in the species of the unmixed dust production. We also calculated the IR extinction curves for forming galaxies. Then we calculated the SED of a local starbursting dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Our present model SED naturally reproduced the strong N--MIR continuum and the lack of cold FIR emission of SBS 0335-052. We found that only the SED of unmixed case can reproduce the NIR continuum of this galaxy. We then made a prediction for the SED of another typical star-forming dwarf, I Zw 18. We investigate the role of dust in star formation activity of extremely metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs). Observations suggest that star formation in BCDs occurs in two different regimes: "active" and "passive". The "active" BCDs host super star clusters (SSCs), and are characterised by compact size, rich H2 content, large dust optical depth, and high dust temperature; the "passive" BCDs are more diffuse with cooler dust, and lack SSCs and large amounts of H2. By treating physical processes concerning formation of stars and dust, we are able to simultaneously reproduce all the above properties of both modes of star formation (active and passive). We find that the difference between the two regimes can be understood through the variation of the "compactness" of the star-forming region: an "active" mode emerges if the region is compact (with radius $\la 50$ pc) and dense (with gas number density $\ga 500$ cm$^{-3}$). The dust, supplied from Type II supernovae in a compact star-forming region, effectively reprocesses the heating photons into the infrared and induces a rapid H2 formation over a period of several Myr. This explains the high infrared luminosity, high dust temperature, and large H2 content of active BCDs. Moreover, the gas in "active" galaxies cools ($\la 300$ K) on a few dynamical timescales, producing a "run-away" star formation episode because of the favourable (cool) conditions. The mild extinction and relatively low molecular content of passive BCDs can also be explained by the same model if we assume a diffuse region (with radius $\ga 100$ pc and gas number density $\la 100$ cm$^{-3}$). To interpret H_2 quasar absorption line observations in Damped Ly-alpha clouds (DLAs), we model the H_2 spatial distribution within a DLA. Based on numerical simulations of disk structures with parameters similar to those derived for such absorbers, we calculate the H_2 distribution as a function of ultraviolet background (UVB) intensity and dust-to-gas ratio. For typical values of these two quantities we find that the area in which the H_2 fraction exceeds 10^{-6} (typical observational detection limit) only covers $\la 10$% of the disk surface, i.e. H_2 has a very inhomogeneous, clumpy distribution even at these low abundance levels. This explains the relative paucity of H_2 detections in DLAs. We investigate what we can learn about galaxy formation and evolution from the data which will be obtained by the forthcoming large submillimeter/millimeter facilities, mainly by the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array/Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA/LMSA). We first calculate the source counts from 350 um to 3 mm using the empirical infrared galaxy number count model of Takeuchi et al. (2001). Based on the number counts, we evaluate the source confusion and determine the confusion limit at various wavebands as a function of the characteristic beam size. At submillimeter wavelengths, source confusion with the 10-15-m class facilities becomes severe at 0.1 to 1 mJy level, and astrometry and flux measurements will be difficult. However, we show that very a large-area survey of submillimeter sources brighter than 10-50 mJy can provide a unique constraint on infrared galaxy evolution at z = 1-2. We also find that the 5\sigma-confusion limit of the LMSA is fainter than 1 \mu Jy. The source counts at such faint flux levels give important information of the epoch of galaxy formation. We then show that multiband photometry from the infrared (by ASTRO-F) to the millimeter can be utilized as a redshift estimator. In addition, we compare the observed 1.4, 5, and 8-GHz source counts with our model counts to examine the contribution of star forming galaxies to the faint radio galaxies., Comment: 17 pages LaTeX, PASP accepted. We analyze the star formation history (SFH) of the Galactic disk by using an infall model. Based on the observed SFH of the Galactic disk, we first determine the timescales of the gas infall into the Galactic disk ($t_{\rm in}$) and that of the gas consumption to form stars ($t_{\rm sf}$). Since each of the two timescales does not prove to be determined independently from the SFH, we first fix $t_{\rm sf}$. Then, $t_{\rm in}$ is determined so that we minimize $\chi^2$. Consequently, we choose three parameter sets: ($t_{\rm sf}$ [Gyr], $t_{\rm in}$ [Gyr]) = (6.0, 23), (11, 12), and (15, 9.0), where we set the Galactic age as 15 Gyr. All of the three cases predict almost identical star formation history. Next, we test the intermittency (or variability) of the star formation rate (SFR) along with the smooth SFH suggested from the infall model. The large value of the $\chi^2$ statistic supports the violent time-variation of the SFH. If we interpret the observed SFH with smooth and variable components, the amplitude of the variable component is comparable to the smooth component. Thus, intermittent SFH of the Galactic disk is strongly suggested. We also examined the metallicity distribution of G-dwarfs. We found that the true parameter set lies between ($t_{\rm sf}$ [Gyr], $t_{\rm in}$ [Gyr]) = (6, 23) and (11, 12), though we should need a more sophisticated model including the process of metal enrichment within the Galactic halo., Comment: 19 pages LaTeX, to appear in ApJ

We propose a limit-cycle scenario of star formation history for any morphological type of spiral galaxies. It is known observationally that the early-type spiral sample has a wider range of the present star formation rate (SFR) than the late-type sample. This tendency is understood in the framework of the limit-cycle model of the interstellar medium (ISM), in which the SFR cyclically changes in accordance with the temporal variation of the mass fraction of the three ISM components. When the limit-cycle model of the ISM is applied, the amplitude of variation of the SFR is expected to change with the supernova (SN) rate. Observational evidence indicates that the early-type spiral galaxies show smaller rates of present SN than late-type ones. Combining this evidence with the limit-cycle model of the ISM, we predict that the early-type spiral galaxies show larger amplitudes in their SFR variation than the late-types. Indeed, this prediction is consistent with the observed wider range of the SFR in the early-type sample than in the late-type sample. In this paper, we examine whether tidal forces exerted by the Galaxy or M31 have an influence on the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) which are their companions. We focus on the surface brightness profiles of the dSphs, especially their core radii because it is suggested based on the numerical simulations that tidal disturbance can make core radii extended. We examine the correlation for the dSphs between the distances from their parent galaxy (the Galaxy or M31) and the compactnesses of their surface brightness profiles by using a parameter ``C'' defined newly in this paper. Consequently, we find no significant correlation. We make some remarks on the origin of this result by considering three possible scenarios; tidal picture, dark matter picture, and heterogeneity of the group of dSphs, each of which has been often discussed to understand fundamental properties and formation processes of dSphs., Comment: 14 pages LaTeX, 2 PostScript figures, to appear in ApJ Letters

Infrared Imaging Surveyor (IRIS) is a satellite which will be launched in the beginning of 2003. One of the main purposes of the IRIS mission is an all-sky survey at far-infrared (FIR) with a flux limit much deeper than that of IRAS. In order to examine the performance of the survey, we estimated the FIR galaxy counts in four (50, 70, 120, and 150 $\mu$m) bands based on some models. We adopted a multicomponent model which consists of cirrus and starburst components for galaxy spectra, and the nearby FIR luminosity function derived from that of IRAS galaxies. We derived the number counts, redshift distributions, and infrared diffuse background radiation spectra for i) no evolution, ii) pure luminosity evolution, iii) pure density evolution with $q_0 = 0.1$ and 0.5. We found that a large number of galaxies ($\sim {\rm a few} \times 10^6$ in the whole sky) will be detected in this survey. With the aid of a vast number of detection, we will detect the effect of galaxy evolution, and evaluate the amplitude of evolution at least in the nearby universe in the IRIS survey, though it will be still difficult to constrain which type of evolution takes place from the number count alone. We also studied the estimation of redshifts of detected galaxies by their infrared colors alone. Although significant contamination takes place among nearby faint galaxies and high-$z$ ones, we found that rough estimation of galaxy redshift can be practicable by jointly using present and future optical surveys., Comment: 40 pages LaTeX2e, 11 embedded figures, to appear in PASP

Infrared Imaging Surveyor (IRIS) is a satellite which will be launched at the beginning of 2003. One of the main purposes of the IRIS mission is an all-sky survey in the far-infrared region with a flux limit much deeper than that of IRAS. Detection of a large number of galaxies ($\sim several \times 10^6$ in the whole sky) is expected in this survey. We investigated the expected optical and near-infrared (NIR) number counts of galaxies detected by the far-infrared scanner (FIS) of IRIS (hereafter, IRIS galaxies) and possibility of optical and NIR follow-up of them. The spectral energy distribution and the luminosity function of the IRIS galaxies are modeled based on the properties of galaxies observed by IRAS. The IRIS galaxies are divided into two populations according to their infrared luminosities ($L_{IR}$); normal spirals ($L_{IR}10^{10}\LO$). The expected number counts of IRIS galaxies for both of the populations are calculated in $B$ and $H$ bands. We show that about 60 normal galaxies and about 80 starburst galaxies are detected per square degree in both of the two bands, when galaxy evolution is not taken into account. All of the normal population of IRIS galaxies are located at the redshift $z\ltsim 0.1$. As for the starburst population, we also calculated number of galaxies with a simple model of evolution. The total number of starburst population predicted by the evolution model is larger by 20% than that expected from the non-evolution model. We discuss a physical interpretation of the relation between $M_{\rm vir}/L$ and $M_{\rm vir}$ of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), where $M_{\rm vir}$ and $L$ are the virial mass and the total luminosity of a dSph, respectively. We used 11 dSphs in the Local Group as the sample. We find two distinct sequences on the $M_{\rm vir}/L$--$M_{\rm vir}$ plane: $M_{\rm vir}/L\propto M_{\rm vir}^{2.0}$ for dSphs with $M_{\rm vir}10^8M_\odot$. A ``discontinuity'' is seen at $M_{\rm vir}\simeq 10^8M_\odot$. We interpret the ``discontinuity'' as the threshold for the gas in dSphs to be blown away by successive supernovae. If a dSph has virial mass (most of which is dark mass) less than $10^8M_\odot$, the gas is blown away, while in a dSph of larger mass, the deep potential well prevents the blow-away mechanism from working effectively. Thus, large mass ratio of dark matter (DM) to baryonic matter (i.e., large $M_{\rm vir}/L$) is realized in a low-mass ($M_{\rm vir}10^8M_\odot$) dSphs. We further make an attempt to explain the above relation for the low-mass dSphs, $M_{\rm vir}/L\propto M_{\rm vir}^{2.0}$, based on estimate of cooling time, using the scaling laws of virial temperature, virial mass and radius of a dSph and assuming that the heating by OB-star radiation terminates the star formation activity. Using a one-zone model for the evolution of dust in spiral galaxies and applying the instantaneous recycling approximation to the model equations, we investigate dust-to-gas ratio of spiral galaxies. Four processes are considered; dust formation from heavy elements ejected by stellar mass loss, dust destruction in supernova remnants, dust destruction in star-forming regions, and accretion of heavy elements onto preexisting dust grains. The equations describe a simplified relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity. The relation is independent of star formation rate. By comparing the theoretical relation with the observational data of nearby spiral galaxies, we show (i) that the accretion process onto the preexisting dust particles must be taken into account for the spiral galaxies; (ii) that the efficiency of dust production from heavy elements ejected by stars can be constrained by the spiral galaxies with low metallicity; (iii) that the Salpeter and Scalo initial mass functions are both consistent with the data of the spiral galaxies., Comment: 9 pages LaTeX, 3 figures, to appear in ApJ Letters
