Although multidimensional simulations have investigated the processes of double WD mergers, post-merger evolution only focused on the carbon-oxygen (CO) WD or helium (He) WD merger remnants. In this work, we investigate for the first time the evolution of the remnants stemmed from the merger of oxygen-neon (ONe) WDs with CO WDs. Our simulation results indicate that the merger remnants can evolve to hydrogen- and helium-deficient giants with maximum radius of about 300Rsun. Our models show evidence that merger remnants more massive than 1.95Msun can ignite Ne before significant mass-loss ensues, and they thus would become electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). However, remnants with initial masses less than 1.90Msun will experience further core contraction and longer evolutionary time before reaching at the conditions for Ne-burning. Therefore their fates are more dependent on mass-loss rates due to stellar winds, and thus more uncertain. Relatively high mass-loss rates would cause such remnants to end their lives as ONe WDs. Our evolutionary models can naturally explain the observational properties of the double WD merger remnant IRAS 00500+6713 (J005311). As previously suggested in the literature, we propose and justify that J005311 may be the remnant from the coalescence of an ONe WD and an CO WD. We deduce that the final outcome of J005311 would be a massive ONe WD rather than a supernova explosion. The formation path to ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) with black hole (BH) accretors is still unclear. In the classical formation scenario, it is difficult to eject the massive envelope of the progenitor star of the BH via common envelope process. Given that some neutron stars (NSs) in binary systems evidently have birth masses close to $\sim 2.0\;M_\odot$, we explore here the possibility that BH-UCXBs may form via accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of accreting NSs, assuming that these previously evolved in LMXBs to masses all the way up to the maximum limit of a NS. We demonstrate this formation path by modelling a few cases of NS-UCXBs with initial NS masses close to the maximum mass of a NS that evolve into BH-UCXBs after the NS accretes material from its He~WD companion. We follow the evolution of the post-AIC BH-UCXB and, based on simple arguments, we anticipate that there is about one BH-UCXB with an AIC origin and a He~WD donor within the current sample of known UCXBs and that 2--5 such BH-UCXBs may be detected in gravitational waves by LISA. In addition, we find that the X-ray luminosity of NS-UCXBs near their orbital period minimum exceeds $\sim 10^{39}\;{\rm erg\;s^{-1}}$ and thus such systems may appear as ultraluminous X-ray sources., Comment: ApJ accepted, 12 pages, 3 figures

Kilonovae are optical flashes produced in the aftermath of neutron star-neutron star mergers (NNMs) or neutron star-black hole mergers (NBMs). In this work, we use the Millennium Simulation, combined with a semi-analytic galaxy formation model--GABE (Galaxy Assembly with Binary Evolution) which adopts binary stellar population synthesis models, to explore the cosmic event rate of kilonovae, and the properties of their host galaxies in a cosmological context. We find that model with supernova kick velocity of 0 km/s fits the observation best, in agreement with the exception of some formation channels of binary neutron star. This indicates that NNMs prefer to originate from binary systems with low kick velocities. With V$_{\rm kick}$=0 km/s, the cosmic event rate of NNMs and NBMs at z=0 are 283 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$ and 91 Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$, respectively, marginally consistent with the constraint from LVC GWTC-1. For Milky Way-mass galaxies, we predict the NNM rate is $25.7^{+59.6}_{-7.1}$ Myr$^{-1}$, which is also in good agreement with the observed properties of binary neutron stars in the Milky Way. Taking all the NNMs into account in the history of Milky Way-mass galaxies, we find that the averaged r-process elements yield with A>79 in a NNM and NBM event should be 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ to be consistent with observation. We conclude that NGC 4993, the host galaxy of GW170817, is a typical host galaxy for NNMs. However, generally NNMs and NBMs tend to reside in young, blue, star-forming, late-type galaxies, with stellar mass and gaseous metallicity distribution peaking at $10^{10.65}$ M$_{\odot}$ and 8.72-8.85, respectively. By studying kilonovae host galaxies in the cosmological background, it is promising to constrain model details better when we have more events in the forthcoming future. Context: Although type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play a key role in astrophysics, the companions of the exploding carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) are still not completely identified. It has been suggested recently that a He-rich WD (a He WD or a hybrid HeCO WD) merges with a CO WD may produce an SN Ia. This theory was based on the double-detonation model, in which the shock compression in the CO core caused by the surface explosion of the He-rich shell might lead to the explosion of the whole CO WD. However, so far, very few binary population synthesis (BPS) studies have been made on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD in the context of SNe Ia. Aims: We aim to systematically study the Galactic birthrates and delay-time distributions of SNe Ia based on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD. Methods: We performed a series of Monte Carlo BPS simulations to investigate the properties of SNe Ia from the merging of a CO WD and a He-rich WD based on the Hurley rapid binary evolution code. We also considered the influence of different metallicities on the final results. Results: From our simulations, we found that no more than 15% of all SNe Ia stem from the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD, and their delay times range from ~110 Myr to the Hubble time. This scenario mainly contributes to SN Ia explosions with intermediate and long delay times. The present work indicates that the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD can roughly reproduce the birthrates of SN 1991bg-like events, and cover the range of their delay times. Using Eggleton's stellar evolution code, we study the minimum mass ratio ($q_{\rm min}$) of W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) binaries that have different primary masses. It is found that the minimum mass ratio of W UMa binaries decreases with increasing mass of the primary if the primary's mass is less than about 1.3$M_{\rm \odot}$, and above this mass the ratio is roughly constant. By comparing the theoretical minimum mass ratio with the observational data, it is found that the existence of low-$q$ systems can be explained by the different structure of the primaries with different masses. This suggests that the dimensionless gyration radius ($k_1^2$) and thus the structure of the primary is very important in determining the minimum mass ratio. In addition, we investigate the mass loss during the merging process of W UMa systems and calculate the rotation velocities of the single stars formed by the merger of W UMa binaries due to tidal instability. It is found that in the case of the conservation of mass and angular momentum, the merged single stars rotate with a equatorial velocity of about $588\sim819$ km s$^{-1}$, which is much larger than their break-up velocities ($v_{\rm b}$). This suggests that the merged stars should extend to a very large radius (3.7$\sim$5.3 times the radii of the primaries) or W UMa systems would lose a large amount of mass (21$\sim$33 per cent of the total mass) during the merging process. If the effect of magnetic braking is considered, the mass loss decreases to be 12$\sim$18 per cent of their total masses. This implies that the significant angular momentum and mass might be lost from W UMa systems in the course of the merging process, and this kind of mass and angular momentum loss might be driven by the release of orbital energy of the secondaries, which is similar to common-envelope evolution., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices

It has recently been proposed that one sub-class of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is sufficiently both distinct and common to be classified separately from the bulk of SNe Ia, with a suggested class name of "type Iax supernovae" (SNe Iax), after SN 2002cx. We show that the population properties of this class can be understood if the events originate from helium double-detonation sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosions, in which a carbon--oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) accumulates a helium layer from a non-degenerate helium star. We have incorporated detailed binary evolution calculations for the progenitor systems into a binary population synthesis model to obtain birthrates and delay times for such events. The predicted Galactic event rate is $\sim$$0.6-1.8\times 10^{-3}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$, in good agreement with the measured rates of SNe Iax. In addition, predicted delay times are $\sim$70\,Myr$-$710\,Myr, consistent with the fact that SNe Iax have so far only been discovered in late-type galaxies. Based on the CO WD mass at explosion and previous detonation models, we also estimate the distribution of resulting SN brightness ($-13 \gtrsim M_{\rm bol} \gtrsim -19$ mag), which can reproduce the empirical diversity of SNe Iax. We speculate on why binaries with non-degenerate donor stars might lead to SNe Iax if similar systems with degenerate donors do not and suggest that the higher mass of the helium layer necessary for ignition at the lower accretion rates typically delivered from non-degenerate donors might provide the explanation., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to some errors

We present BayeSED, a general purpose tool for doing Bayesian analysis of SEDs by using whatever pre-existing model SED libraries or their linear combinations. The artificial neural networks (ANNs), principal component analysis (PCA) and multimodal nested sampling (MultiNest) techniques are employed to allow a highly efficient sampling of posterior distribution and the calculation of Bayesian evidence. As a demonstration, we apply this tool to a sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs). The Bayesian evidences obtained for a pure Starburst, a pure AGN, and a linear combination of Starburst+AGN models show that the Starburst+AGN model have the highest evidence for all galaxies in this sample. The Bayesian evidences for the three models and the estimated contributions of starburst and AGN to infrared luminosity show that HLIRGs can be classified into two groups: one dominated by starburst and the other dominated by AGN. Other parameters and corresponding uncertainties about starburst and AGN are also estimated by using the model with the highest Bayesian evidence. We found that the starburst region of the HLIRGs dominated by starburst tends to be more compact and has a higher fraction of OB star than that of HLIRGs dominated by AGN. Meanwhile, the AGN torus of the HLIRGs dominated by AGN tend to be more dusty than that of HLIRGs dominated by starburst. These results are consistent with previous researches, but need to be tested further with larger samples. Overall, we believe that BayeSED could be a reliable and efficient tool for exploring the nature of complex systems such as dust-obscured starburst-AGN composite systems from decoding their SEDs., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We construct a parameterized model to explore the main properties of the star formation history of M33. We assume that the disk originates and grows by the primordial gas infall and adopt the simple form of gas accretion rate with one free parameter, the infall time-scale. We also include the contribution of gas outflow process. A major update of the model is that we adopt a molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and calculate the evolution of the atomic and molecular gas separately. Comparisons between the model predictions and the observational data show that the model predictions are very sensitive to the adopted infall time-scale, while the gas outflow process mainly influences the metallicity profile. The model adopting a moderate outflow rate and an inside-out formation scenario can be in good agreement with most of observed constraints of M33 disk. We also compare the model predictions based on the molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law and that based on the Kennicutt star formation law. Our results imply that the molecular hydrogen correlated star formation law should be preferred to describe the evolution of the M33 disk, especially the radial distributions of both the cold gas and the stellar population., Comment: 11 pages,6 figures,2 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We describe the target selection algorithm for the low latitude disk portion of the LAMOST Pilot Survey, which aims to test systems in preparation for the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. We use the PPMXL (Roeser et al. 2010) astrometric catalog, which provides positions, proper motions, B/R/I magnitudes (mostly) from USNO-B (Monet et al. 2003) and J/H/Ks from The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS, see Skrutskie et al. 2006) as well. We present a detailed comparison between the 2-10 keV hard X-ray and infrared (IR) luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The composite X-ray to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGN used for connecting the hard X-ray LF (HXLF) and IR LF (IRLF) are modeled with a simple but well tested torus model based on the radiative transfer and photoionization code CLOUDY. Four observational determinations of the evolution of 2-10 keV HXLF and six evolution models of the obscured type-2 AGN fraction ($f_2$) have been considered. The 8.0 and 15 \micron LFs for the total, unobscured type-1 and obscured type-2 AGN are predicted from the HXLFs, and then compared with the measurements currently available. We find that the IRLFs predicted from HXLFs tend to underestimate the number of the most IR-luminous AGN. This is independent of the choices of HXLF and $f_2$, and even more obvious for the HXLFs recently measured. We show that the discrepancy between the HXLFs and IRLFs can be largely resolved when the anticorrelation between the UV to X-ray slope $\alpha_{\mathrm{ox}}$ and UV luminosity $L_{\rm UV}$ is appropriately considered. We also discuss other possible explanations for the discrepancy, such as the missing population of Compton-thick AGN and possible contribution of star-formation in the host to the mid-IR. Meanwhile, we find that the HXLFs and IRLFs of AGN can be more consistent with each other if the obscuration mechanisms of quasars and Seyferts are assumed to be different, corresponding to their different triggering and fueling mechanisms. More accurate measurements of the IRLFs of AGN, especially that determined at smaller redshift bins and more accurately separated to that for type-1 and type-2, are very helpful for clarifying these interesting issues., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The number of methods used to study the properties of galaxies is increased, and testing these methods is very important. Galactic globular clusters (GCs) provide an excellent medium for such test, because they can be considered as simple stellar populations. We present ages and metallicities for 40 Galactic GCs as determined from three publicly available techniques, including colour, Lick-index and spectrum-fitting methods, based on Bruzual & Charlot evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models. By comparing with the ages obtained from colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and metallicities obtained from spectra of stars, we are able to estimate the ability of 'these methods on determination of GCs parameters, which is absolutely necessary. We determine relative stellar ages and metallicities mainly for about 80 elliptical galaxies in low and high density environments via the latest binary stellar population (BSP) synthesis model and test a latest hierarchical formation model of elliptical galaxies which adopted the new $\Lambda$CDM cosmology for the first time. The stellar ages and metallicities of galaxies are estimated from two high-quality published spectra line indices, i.e. H$\beta$ and [MgFe]. The results show that elliptical galaxies have stellar populations older than 3.9 Gyr and more metal rich than 0.02. Most of our results are in agreement with predictions of the model: First, elliptical galaxies in denser environment are redder and have older populations than field galaxies. Second, elliptical galaxies with more massive stellar components are redder while have older and more metal rich populations than less massive ones. Third, the most massive galaxies are shown to have the oldest and most metal rich stars.
