Magnetic 2D materials hold promise to change the miniaturization paradigm of unidirectional photonic components. However, the integration of these materials in devices hinges on the accurate determination of the optical properties down to the monolayer limit, which is still missing. By using hyperspectral wide-field imaging at room temperature, we reveal a nonmonotonic thickness dependence of the complex optical dielectric function in the archetypal magnetic 2D material CrI3 extending across different length scales: onsetting at the mesoscale, peaking at the nanoscale, and decreasing again down to the single layer. These results portray a modification of the electronic properties of the material and align with the layer-dependent magnetism in CrI3, shedding light on the long-standing structural conundrum in this material. The unique modulation of the complex dielectric function from the monolayer up to more than 100 layers will be instrumental for understanding mesoscopic effects in layered materials and tuning light-matter interactions in magnetic 2D materials. Detection is most often the main impediment to reduce the number of spins in paramagnetic resonance experiments. Here we propose a new route to carry out electrically-detected spin resonance of an individual spin, placed at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI). The edges of a QSHI host a one dimensional electron gas with perfect spin-momentum locking. Therefore, the spin relaxation induced by emission of an electron-hole pair at the edge state of the QSHI can generate current. Here we demonstrate that driving the system with an $AC$ signal, a nonequilibrium occupation can be induced in the absence of applied bias voltage, resulting in a $DC$ measurable current. We compute the $DC$ current as a function of the Rabi frequency $\Omega$, the spin relaxation and decoherence times, $T_1$ and we discuss the feasibility of this experiment with state-of-the-art instrumentation., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

A theorem that establishes a one-to-one relation between zero-temperature static spin-spin correlators and coupling constants for a general class of quantum spin Hamiltonians bilinear in the spin operators has been recently established by J. Quintanilla, using an argument in the spirit of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem in density functional theory. Quintanilla's theorem gives a firm theoretical foundation to quantum spin Hamiltonian learning using spin structure factors as input data. Here we extend the validity of the theorem in two directions. First, following the same approach as Mermin, the proof is extended to the case of finite-temperature spin structure factors, thus ensuring that the application of this theorem to experimental data is sound. Second, we note that this theorem applies to all types of Hamiltonians expressed as sums of bilinear operators, so that it can also relate the density-density correlators to the Coulomb matrix elements for interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level., Comment: 4 pages

We study spin excitations and Kondo effect in open-shell nanographenes, motivated by recent scanning tunneling inelastic spectroscopy experiments. Specifically, we consider three systems, the triangulene, the extended triangulene with rocket shape, both with an $S=1$ ground state, and a triangulene dimer with $S=0$ on account of intermolecular exchange. We focus on the consequences of hybridization of the nanographene zero-modes with a conducting substrate on the $dI/dV$ lineshapes associated with spin excitations. The partially filled nanographene zero-modes coupled to the conduction electrons in the substrate constitute multi-orbital Anderson impurity models that we solve in the one-crossing approximation which treats the coupling to the substrate to infinite order. We find that the coupling to the substrate leads to (i) renormalization of the spin flip excitation energies of the bare molecule, (ii) broadening of the spectral features and (iii) the emergence of zero bias Kondo peaks for the $S=1$ ground states. The calculated substrate induced shift of the spin excitation energies is found to be significantly larger than their broadening, which implies that this effect has to be considered when comparing experimental results and theory., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; replaced with revised version, accepted in Phys. The determination of the ground state of quantum many-body systems via digital quantum computers rests upon the initialization of a sufficiently educated guess. This requirement becomes more stringent the greater the system. Preparing physically-motivated ans\"{a}tze on quantum hardware is therefore important to achieve quantum advantage in the simulation of correlated electrons. In this spirit, we introduce the Gutzwiller Wave Function (GWF) within the context of the digital quantum simulation of the Fermi-Hubbard model. We present a quantum routine to initialize the GWF that comprises two parts. In the first, the noninteracting state associated with the $U = 0$ limit of the model is prepared. In the second, the non-unitary Gutzwiller projection that selectively removes states with doubly-occupied sites from the wave function is performed by adding to every lattice site an ancilla qubit, the measurement of which in the $|0\rangle$ state confirms the projection was made. Due to its non-deterministic nature, we estimate the success rate of the algorithm in generating the GWF as a function of the lattice size and the interaction strength $U/t$. We study the electronic properties of the heterobilayer of vanadium and iron oxychlorides, VOCl and FeOCl, two layered air stable van der Waals insulating oxides with different types of antiferromagnetic order in bulk: VOCl monolayers are ferromagnetic (FM) whereas the FeOCl monolayers are antiferromagnetic (AF). We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations, with Hubbard correction that is found to be needed to describe correctly the insulating nature of these compounds. We compute the magnetic anisotropy and propose a spin model Hamiltonian. Our calculations show that interlayer coupling in weak and ferromagnetic so that magnetic order of the monolayers is preserved in the heterobilayers providing thereby a van der Waals heterostructure that combines two monolayers with different magnetic order. Interlayer exchange should lead both to exchange bias and to the emergence of hybrid collective modes that that combine FM and AF magnons. The energy band of the heterobilayer show a type II band alignment, and feature spin-splitting of the states of the AF layer due to the breaking of the inversion symmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The emergence of local moments in graphene zigzag edges, grain boundaries, vacancies and sp3 defects has been widely studied theoretically. However, conclusive experimental evidence is scarce. Recent progress in on-surface synthesis has made it possible to create nanographenes, such as triangulenes, with local moments in their ground states, and to probe them using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) spectroscopy. Here we review the application of the theory of sequential and cotunneling transport to relate the dI/dV spectra with the spin properties of nanographenes probed by STM. This approach permits us to connect the dI/dV with the many-body energies and wavefunctions of the graphene nanostructures. We apply this method describing the electronic states of the nanographenes by means of exact diagonalization of the Hubbard model within a restricted Active Space. This permits us to provide a proper quantum description of the emergence of local moments in graphene and its interplay with transport. We discuss the results of this theory in the case of diradical nanographenes, such as triangulene, rectangular ribbons and the Clar’s goblet, that have been recently studied experimentally by means of STM spectroscopy. This approach permits us to calculate both the dI/dV spectra, that yields excitation energies, as well as the atomically resolved conductivity maps, that provide information on the wavefunctions of the collective spin modes. In topological systems, a modulation in the gap onset near interfaces can lead to the appearance of massive edge states, as were first described by Volkov and Pankratov. In this work, we study graphene nanoribbons in the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling smoothly modulated near the system edges. We show that this space modulation leads to the appearance of Volkov-Pankratov states, in addition to the topologically protected ones. We obtain this result by means of two complementary methods, one based on the effective low-energy Dirac equation description and the other on a fully numerical tight-binding approach, finding excellent agreement between the two. We then show how transport measurements might reveal the presence of Volkov-Pankratov states, and discuss possible graphene-like structures in which such states might be observed., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We consider a hybrid structure formed by graphene and an insulating antiferromagnet, separated by a dielectric of thickness up to $d\simeq 500 \,nm$. When uncoupled, both graphene and the antiferromagnetic surface host their own polariton modes coupling the electromagnetic field with plasmons in the case of graphene, and with magnons in the case of the antiferromagnet. We show that the hybrid structure can host two new types of hybrid polariton modes. First, a surface magnon-plasmon polariton whose dispersion is radically changed by the carrier density of the graphene layer, including a change of sign in the group velocity. Second, a surface plasmon-magnon polariton formed as a linear superposition of graphene surface plasmon and the antiferromagnetic bare magnon. This polariton has a dispersion with two branches, formed by the anticrossing between the dispersive surface plasmon and the magnon. We propose a method to realize a broad class of tunable fermionic Hamiltonians in graphene bilayer. For that matter, we consider graphene bilayer functionalized with sp3 defects that induce zero-energy resonances hosting an individual electron each. The application of an off-plane electric field opens up a gap, so that the zero-energy resonance becomes an in-gap bound state whose confinement scales inversely with the gap. Controlling both the distance among the defects and the applied electric field, we can define fermionic models, even lattices, whose hoppings and Coulomb interactions can be tuned. We consider in detail the case of triangular and honeycomb artificial lattices and we show how, for a given arrangement of the sp3 centers, these lattices can undergo an electrically controlled transition between the weak and strong coupling regimes. We propose a mechanism to drive singlet-triplet spin transitions electrically in a wide class of graphene nanostructures that present pairs of in-gap zero modes, localized at opposite sublattices. Examples are rectangular nanographenes with short zigzag edges, armchair ribbon heterojunctions with topological in-gap states, and graphene islands with sp3 functionalization. The interplay between the hybridization of zero modes and the Coulomb repulsion leads to symmetric exchange interaction that favors a singlet ground state. Application of an off-plane electric field to the graphene nanostructure generates an additional Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which results in antisymmetric exchange interaction that mixes S=0 and S=1 manifolds. We show that modulation in time of either the off-plane electric field or the applied magnetic field permits performing electrically driven spin resonance in a system with very long spin-relaxation times. Scattering of electrons by localized spins is the ultimate process enabling detection and control of the magnetic state of a spin-doped material. At the molecular scale, scattering is mediated by the orbitals hosting the spin. Here we report the selective excitation of a molecular spin by tunneling through different molecular orbitals. Spatially resolved tunneling spectra on iron-porphyrins reveal that the inelastic spin excitation extends beyond the iron site, changing shape and symmetry along the molecule. Combining density functional theory simulations with a phenomenological scattering model, we show that the extension and lineshape of the inelastic signal are due to excitation pathways assisted by different frontier orbitals. By selecting the intramolecular site for electron injection, the relative weight of iron and pyrrole orbitals in the tunneling process is modified. The rules that govern spin exchange interaction in pristine graphene nanostructures are constrained by the bipartite character of the lattice, so that the sign of the exchange is determined by whether magnetic moments are on the same sublattice or else. The synthesis of graphene ribbons with perfect zigzag edges and a fluoranthene group with a pentagon ring, a defect that breaks the bipartite nature of the honeycomb lattice, has been recently demonstrated. Here we address how the electronic and spin properties of these structures are modified by such defects, both for indirect exchange interactions as well as the emergent edge magnetism, studied both with DFT and mean field Hubbard model calculations. In all instances we find that the local breakdown of the bipartite nature at the defect reverts the sign of the otherwise ferromagnetic correlations along the edge, introducing a locally antiferromagnetic intra-edge coupling and, for narrow ribbons, also revert the antiferromagnetic inter-edge interactions that are normally found in pristine ribbons. Our findings show that these pentagon defects are a resource that permits to engineer the spin exchange interactions in graphene based nano-structures., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The edges of graphene and graphene like systems can host localized states with evanescent wave function with properties radically different from those of the Dirac electrons in bulk. This happens in a variety of situations, that are reviewed here. First, zigzag edges host a set of localized non dispersive state at the Dirac energy. At half filling, it is expected that these states are prone to ferromagnetic instability, causing a very interesting type of edge ferromagnetism. Second, graphene under the influence of external perturbations can host a variety of topological insulating phases, including the conventional Quantum Hall effect, the Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) and the Quantum Spin Hall phase, in all of which phases conduction can only take place through topologically protected edge states. Here we provide an unified vision of the properties of all these edge states, examined under the light of the same one orbital tight-binding model. We consider the combined action of interactions, spin orbit coupling and magnetic field, which produces a wealth of different physical phenomena. Here we show that the zero point energy associated to the quantum spin fluctuations of a non- collinear spin texture produce Casimir-like magnetic fields. We study the effect of these Casimir fields on the topologically protected non-collinear spin textures known as skyrmions. We calculate the zero point energy, to the lowest order in the spin wave expansion, in a Heisenberg model with Dzyalonshinkii-Moriya interactions chosen so that the classical ground state displays skyrmion textures, that disappear upon application of a strong enough magnetic field. Our calculations show that the Casimir magnetic field contributes a 10 percent of the total Zeeman energy necessary to delete the skyrmion texture with an applied field, and is thereby an observable effect., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

arXiv:1405.3304v1, A wide class of nanomagnets shows striking quantum behaviour, known as quantum spin tunnelling (QST): instead of two degenerate ground states with opposite magnetizations, a bonding-antibonding pair forms, resulting in a splitting of the ground-state doublet with wave functions linear combination of two classically opposite magnetic states, leading to the quenching of their magnetic moment. Here we study how QST is destroyed and classical behaviour emerges in the case of magnetic adatoms, where, contrary to larger nanomagnets, the QST splitting is in some instances bigger than temperature and broadening. We analyze two different mechanisms for the renormalization of the QST splitting: Heisenberg exchange between different atoms, and Kondo exchange interaction with the substrate electrons. Sufficiently strong spin-substrate and spin-spin coupling renormalize the QST splitting to zero allowing the environmental decoherence to eliminate superpositions between classical states, leading to the emergence of spontaneous magnetization. We calculate the effect of spin waves on the properties of finite size spin chains with a chiral spin ground state observed on bi-atomic Fe chains deposited on Iridium(001). The system is described with a Heisenberg model supplemented with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling and a uniaxial single ion anisotropy that presents a chiral spin ground state. Spin waves are studied using the Holstein-Primakoff (HP) boson representation of spin operators. Both the renormalized ground state and the elementary excitations are found by means of Bogoliubov transformation, as a function of the two variables that can be controlled experimentally, the applied magnetic field and the chain length. Three main results are found. First, because of the non-collinear nature of the classical ground state, there is a significant zero point reduction of the ground state magnetization of the spin spiral. Second, the two lowest energy spin waves are edge modes in the spin spiral state that, above a critical field the results into a collinear ferromagnetic ground state, become confined bulk modes. Third, in the spin spiral state, the spin wave spectrum exhibits oscillatory behavior as function of the chain length with the same period of the spin helix., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Digital magnetic recording is based on the storage of a bit of information in the orientation of a magnetic system with two stable ground states. Here we address two fundamental problems that arise when this is done on a quantized spin: quantum spin tunneling and backaction of the readout process. We show that fundamental differences exist between integer and semi-integer spins when it comes to both reading and recording classical information in a quantized spin. Our findings imply fundamental limits to the miniaturization of magnetic bits and are relevant to recent experiments where a spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscope reads and records a classical bit in the spin orientation of a single magnetic atom. Recent years have shown steady progress in research towards molecular electronics [1,2], where molecules have been investigated as switches [3-5], diodes [6], and electronic mixers [7]. In much of the previous work a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope was employed to address an individual molecule. As this arrangement does not provide long-term stability, more recently metal-molecule-metal links have been made using break junction devices [8-10]. However, it has been difficult to establish unambiguously that a single molecule forms the contact [11]. Here, we show that a single H2 molecule can form a stable bridge between Pt electrodes. In contrast to results for other organic molecules, the bridge has a nearly perfect conductance of one quantum unit, carried by a single channel. The H2-bridge provides a simple test system and a fundamental step towards understanding transport properties of single-molecule devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In a study of the ferromagnetic phase of a multilayer digital ferromagnetic semiconductor in the mean-field and effective-mass approximations, we find the exchange interaction to have the dominant energy scale of the problem, effectively controlling the spatial distribution of the carrier spins in the digital ferromagnetic heterostructures. In the ferromagnetic phase, the majority and minority carriers tend to be in different regions of the space (spin separation). Hence, the charge distribution of carriers also changes noticeably from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic phase. Using a scanning tunneling microscope or mechanically controllable break junctions it has been shown that it is possible to control the formation of a wire made of single gold atoms. In these experiments an interatomic distance between atoms in the chain of ~3.6 Angstrom was reported which is not consistent with recent theoretical calculations. Here, using precise calibration procedures for both techniques, we measure length of the atomic chains. Based on the distance between the peaks observed in the chain length histogram we find the mean value of the inter-atomic distance before chain rupture to be 2.6 +/- 0.2 A . This value agrees with the theoretical calculations for the bond length. The discrepancy with the previous experimental measurements was due to the presence of He gas, that was used to promote the thermal contact, and which affects the value of the work function that is commonly used to calibrate distances in scanning tunnelling microscopy and mechanically controllable break junctions at low temperatures., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Scanning tunneling microscopy permits us to image the Kondo resonance of a single magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic surface. When the magnetic impurity is placed at the focus of an elliptical quantum corral, a Kondo resonance has been recently observed both on top of the impurity and on top of the focus where no magnetic impurity is present. This projection of the Kondo resonance to a remote point on the surface is referred to as quantum mirage. We present a quantum mechanical theory for the quantum mirage inside an ideal quantum corral and predict that the mirage will occur in corrals with shapes other than elliptical. We discuss light-heavy hole beats observed in transient optical experiments in GaAs quantum wells in terms of a free-boson coherent state model. This approach is compared with descriptions based on few-level representations. Results lead to an interpretation of the beats as due to classical electromagnetic interference. The boson picture correctly describes photon excitation of extended states and accounts for experiments involving coherent control of the exciton density and Rayleigh scattering beating., Comment: 4 pages, no figures.
