Given a group $G$ and an endomorphism $\varphi$ of $G$, two elements $x, y \in G$ are said to be $\varphi$-conjugate if $x = gy \varphi(g)^{-1}$ for some $g \in G$. The number of equivalence classes for this relation is the Reidemeister number $R(\varphi)$ of $\varphi$. The set $\{R(\psi) \mid \psi \in \mathrm{Aut}(G)\}$ is called the Reidemeister spectrum of $G$. We investigate Reidemeister numbers and spectra on direct products of finitely many groups and determine what information can be derived from the individual factors.

By studying the commuting graphs of conjugacy classes of the sequence of Heisenberg groups $H_{2n+1}(p)$ and their limit $H_\infty(p)$ we find pseudo-random behavior (and the random graph in the limiting case). This makes a nice case study for transfer of information between finite and infinite objects. Some of this behavior transfers to the problem of understanding what makes understanding the character theory of the uni-upper-triangular group (mod p) “wild.” Our investigations in this paper may be seen as a meditation on the question: is randomness simple or is it complicated?

Given a group $G$, we write $g^G$ for the conjugacy class of $G$ containing the element $g$. A theorem of B. H. Neumann states that if $G$ is a group in which all conjugacy classes are finite with bounded size, then the commutator subgroup $G'$ is finite. We establish the following results. Let $K,n$ be positive integers and $G$ a group having a $K$-approximate subgroup $A$. If $|a^G|\leq n$ for each $a\in A$, then the commutator subgroup of $\langle A^G\rangle$ has finite $(K,n)$-bounded order. It is shown that the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) integrable hierarchy can be obtained as the dynamical equations of three-dimensional General Relativity with a negative cosmological constant. This geometrization of the AKNS system is possible through the construction of novel boundary conditions for the gravitational field. These are invariant under an asymptotic symmetry group characterized by an infinite set of AKNS commuting conserved charges. In 2005 Wolfgang Willems put forward a conjecture proposing a lower bound for the sum of squares of the degrees of the irreducible p-Brauer characters of a finite group G. We prove this conjecture for the prime p = 2 . For this we rely on the recent reduction of Willems' conjecture to a question on quasi-simple groups by Tong-Viet. We also verify the conditions of Tong-Viet for certain families of finite quasi-simple groups and odd primes. On the way we obtain lower bounds for the number of regular semisimple conjugacy classes in finite groups of Lie type.

The aim of this paper is to compare and contrast the class of residually finite groups with the class of equationally Noetherian groups - groups over which every system of coefficient-free equations is equivalent to a finite subsystem. It is easy to construct groups that are residually finite but not equationally Noetherian (e.g. the direct sum of all finite groups) or vice versa (e.g. the additive group $(\mathbb{Q},+)$ of the rationals). However, no explicit examples that are finitely generated seem to appear in the literature. In this paper, we show that among finitely generated groups, the classes of residually finite and equationally Noetherian groups are similar, but neither of them contains the other. On one hand, we show that some classes of finitely generated groups which are known to be residually finite, such as abelian-by-polycyclic groups, are also equationally Noetherian (answering a question posed by R. Bryant). We also give analogous results stating sufficient conditions for a fundamental group of a graph of groups to be equationally Noetherian and to be residually finite. On the other hand, we produce examples of finitely generated non-(equationally Noetherian) groups which are either residually torsion-free nilpotent or conjugacy separable, as well as examples of finitely presented equationally Noetherian groups that are not residually finite., Comment: 28 pages; minor charges in response to the referees' comments. A group $G$ is said to have property $R_{\infty}$ if for every automorphism $\varphi \in {\rm Aut}(G)$, the cardinality of the set of $\varphi$-twisted conjugacy classes is infinite. Many classes of groups are known to have such property. However, very few examples are known for which $R_{\infty}$ is {\it geometric}, i.e., if $G$ has property $R_{\infty}$ then any group quasi-isometric to $G$ also has property $R_{\infty}$. In this paper, we give examples of groups and conditions under which $R_{\infty}$ is preserved under commensurability. Let $G$ be a group acting on a small category $\mathcal C$ over a field $k$, that is $\mathcal C$ is a $G$-$k$-category. We first obtain that $\mathcal C$ is resolvable by a category which is $G$-$k$-equivalent to it, on which $G$ acts freely on objects. This resolvent category enables to show that if the coinvariants and the invariants functors are exact, then the coinvariants and invariants of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)homology of $\mathcal C$ are isomorphic to the trivial component of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)ho\-mo\-logy of the skew category $\mathcal C[G]$. Otherwise the corresponding spectral sequence can be settled. If the action of $G$ is free on objects, there is a canonical decomposition of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)homology of the quotient category $\mathcal C/G$ along the conjugacy classes of $G$. We describe an easy way how to find supercharacter theories for a finite group, if its character table is known. Namely, we show how an arbitrary partition of the conjugacy classes or of the irreducible characters can be refined to the coarsest partition that belongs to a supercharacter theory. Our constructions emphasize the duality between superclasses and supercharacters. An algorithm is presented to find all supercharacter theories on a given character table. We prove that the automorphism group of the Urysohn diversity is a universal Polish group. Furthermore we show that the automorphism group of the rational Urysohn diversity has ample generics, a dense conjugacy class and that it embeds densely into the automorphism group of the (full) Urysohn diversity. It follows that this latter group also has a dense conjugacy class.

In this article, we review the proofs of the first Zassenhaus Conjecture on conjugacy of torsion units in integral group rings for the alternating groups of degree 5 and 6, by Luthar-Passi and Hertweck. We describe how the study of these examples led to the development of two methods -- the HeLP method and the lattice method. We exhibit these methods and summarize some results which were achieved using them. We then apply these methods to the study of the first Zassenhaus conjecture for the alternating group of degree 7 where only one critical case remains open for a full answer. This paper continues the discussion started in [CK19] concerning Arnold's legacy on classical KAM theory and (some of) its modern developments. We prove a detailed and explicit `global' Arnold's KAM Theorem, which yields, in particular, the Whitney conjugacy of a non-degenerate, real-analytic, nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system to an integrable system on a closed, nowhere dense, positive measure subset of the phase space. Detailed measure estimates on the Kolmogorov's set are provided in the case the phase space is: (A) a uniform neighborhood of an arbitrary (bounded) set times the d-torus and (B) a domain with $C^2$ boundary times the d-torus. We address the dynamics of the cellular automaton (CA) that multiplies by $p/q$ in base $pq$ (for coprime $p>q>1$) by studying its trace subshift. We present a conjugacy of the trace to a previously studied base-$p/q$ numeration system. We also show that the trace subshift is not synchronizing and in particular not sofic. Let ${\rm cs}(G)$ denote the set of conjugacy class sizes of a group $G$, and let ${\rm cs}^*(G)={\rm cs}(G)\setminus\{1\}$ be the sizes of non-central classes. We prove three results. We classify all finite groups $G$ with ${\rm cs}(G)=\{a, a+d, \dots ,a+rd\}$ an arithmetic progression with $r\geqslant 2$. (We show that ${\rm cs}(G)=\{1,2,3\}$.) Our most substantial result classifies all $G$ with ${\rm cs}^*(G)=\{2,4,6\}$. Finally, we classify all groups $G$ whose largest two non-central conjugacy class sizes are coprime. In this paper we consider the {\em conjugacy stability} property of subgroups and provide effective procedures to solve the problem in several classes of groups. In particular, we start with free groups, that is, we give an effective procedure to find out if a finitely generated subgroup of a free group is conjugacy stable. Then we further generalize this result to quasi-convex subgroups of torsion-free hyperbolic groups and finitely generated subgroups of limit groups., Comment: 11 pages

Let o ( G ) be the average order of the elements of G, where G is a finite group. We show that there is no polynomial lower bound for o ( G ) in terms of o ( N ) , where N ⊴ G , even when G is a prime-power order group and N is abelian. This gives a negative answer to a question of A. Jaikin-Zapirain.

A second-quantized version of Mathieu moonshine leads to product formulae for functions that are potentially genus-two Siegel Modular Forms analogous to the Igusa Cusp Form. The modularity of these functions do not follow in an obvious manner. For some conjugacy classes, but not all, they match known modular forms. In this paper, we express the product formulae for all conjugacy classes of $M_{24}$ in terms of products of standard modular forms. Let G be a group and {\phi} be an automorphism of G. Two elements x, y of G are said to be {\phi}-twisted if y = gx{\phi}(g)^{-1} for some g in G. We say that a group G has the R_{\infty}-property if the number of {\phi}-twisted conjugacy classes is infinite for every automorphism {\phi} of G. We present a novel method for computing slow manifolds and their fast fibre bundles in geometric singular perturbation problems. This coordinate-independent method is inspired by the parametrisation method introduced by Cabr\'e, Fontich and de la Llave. By iteratively solving a so-called conjugacy equation, our method simultaneously computes parametrisations of slow manifolds and fast fibre bundles, as well as the dynamics on these objects, to arbitrarily high degrees of accuracy. We show the power of this top-down method for the study of systems with multiple (i.e., three or more) timescales. In particular, we highlight the emergence of hidden timescales and show how our method can uncover these surprising multiple timescale structures. In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups with a large number of conjugacy classes of $p$-elements for some prime $p$. As consequences, we obtain some new criteria for the existence of normal $p$-complements in finite groups.

In comparison to graphs, combinatorial methods for the isomorphism problem of finite groups are less developed than algebraic ones. To be able to investigate the descriptive complexity of finite groups and the group isomorphism problem, we define the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm for groups. In fact we define three versions of the algorithm. In contrast to graphs, where the three analogous versions readily agree, for groups the situation is more intricate. For groups, we show that their expressive power is linearly related. We also give descriptions in terms of counting logics and bijective pebble games for each of the versions. In order to construct examples of groups, we devise an isomorphism and non-isomorphism preserving transformation from graphs to groups. Using graphs of high Weisfeiler-Leman dimension, we construct highly similar but non-isomorphic groups with equal $\Theta(\sqrt{\log n})$-subgroup-profiles, which nevertheless have Weisfeiler-Leman dimension 3. These groups are nilpotent groups of class 2 and exponent $p$, they agree in many combinatorial properties such as the combinatorics of their conjugacy classes and have highly similar commuting graphs. The results indicate that the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm can be more effective in distinguishing groups than in distinguishing graphs based on similar combinatorial constructions., Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures. Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ and let $C_1, \ldots, C_t$ be non-central conjugacy classes in $G$. In this paper, we consider the problem of determining whether there exist $g_i \in C_i$ such that $\langle g_1, \ldots, g_t \rangle$ is Zariski dense in $G$. First we establish a general result, which shows that if $\Omega$ is an irreducible subvariety of $G^t$, then the set of tuples in $\Omega$ generating a dense subgroup of $G$ is either empty or dense in $\Omega$. In the special case $\Omega = C_1 \times \cdots \times C_t$, by considering the dimensions of fixed point spaces, we prove that this set is dense when $G$ is an exceptional algebraic group and $t \geqslant 5$, assuming $k$ is not algebraic over a finite field. In fact, for $G=G_2$ we only need $t \geqslant 4$ and both of these bounds are best possible. As an application, we show that many faithful representations of exceptional algebraic groups are generically free. We also establish new results on the topological generation of exceptional groups in the special case $t=2$, which have applications to random generation of finite exceptional groups of Lie type. We classify finite non-solvable groups with a faithful primitive irreducible complex character that vanishes on a unique conjugacy class. Our results answer a question of Dixon and Rahnamai Barghi and suggest an extension of Burnside’s classical theorem on zeros of characters.

Let $G$ be a simple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic two. Any non-trivial self-dual irreducible $K[G]$-module $W$ admits a non-degenerate $G$-invariant alternating bilinear form, thus giving a representation $f: G \rightarrow \operatorname{Sp}(W)$. In the case where $G = \operatorname{SL}_n(K)$ and $W$ has highest weight $\varpi_1 + \varpi_{n-1}$, and in the case where $G = \operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(K)$ and $W$ has highest weight $\varpi_2$, we determine for every unipotent element $u \in G$ the conjugacy class of $f(u)$ in $\operatorname{Sp}(W)$. We explore self-similar collapse solutions to the Einstein-axion-dilaton system in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, which are invariant under spacetime dilation combined with internal $SL(2,R)$ transformations. In this paper, we study a natural class of groups that act as affine transformations of $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$ . We investigate whether these solvable, “abelian-by-cyclic," groups can act smoothly and nonaffinely on $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$ while remaining homotopic to the affine actions. In the affine actions, elliptic and hyperbolic dynamics coexist, forcing a priori complicated dynamics in nonaffine perturbations. We first show, using the KAM method, that any small and sufficiently smooth perturbation of such an affine action can be conjugated smoothly to an affine action, provided certain Diophantine conditions on the action are met. In dimension two, under natural dynamical hypotheses, we get a complete classification of such actions; namely, any such group action by $$C^r$$ diffeomorphisms can be conjugated to the affine action by $$C^{r-\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. Next, we show that in any dimension, $$C^1$$ small perturbations can be conjugated to an affine action via $$C^{1+\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. The method is a generalization of the Herman theory for circle diffeomorphisms to higher dimensions in the presence of a foliation structure provided by the hyperbolic dynamics.

Let [Formula: see text] be a [Formula: see text]-power where [Formula: see text] is a fixed prime. In this paper, we look at the [Formula: see text]-power maps on unitriangular group [Formula: see text] and triangular group [Formula: see text]. In the spirit of Borel dominance theorem for algebraic groups, we show that the image of this map contains large size conjugacy classes. For the triangular group we give a recursive formula to count the image size.

We determine when two almost automorphisms of a regular tree are conjugate. This is done by combining the classification of conjugacy classes in the automorphism group of a level-homogeneous tree by Gawron, Nekrashevych and Sushchansky and the solution of the conjugacy problem in Thompson's $V$ by Belk and Matucci. We explore systematically perturbations of self-similar solutions to the Einstein-axion-dilaton system, whose dynamics are invariant under spacetime dilations combined with internal $SL(2,R)$ transformations. The self-similar solutions capture the enticing behavior critical systems on the verge of gravitational collapse, in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. Our methods rest on a combination of analytical and numerical tools, apply to all three conjugacy classes of $SL(2,R)$ transformations and allow accurate estimates of the corresponding Choptuik exponents. It is well known that these exponents depend on the spacetime dimension and on the matter content. Our main result is that they also attain different values, even within a given conjugacy class, for the distinct types of critical solutions that we recently identified in the Einstein-axion-dilaton system., Comment: V3: 29 pages, 4 figures and published version in JHEP

A systematic mathematical framework for the study of numerical algorithms would allow comparisons, facilitate conjugacy arguments, as well as enable the discovery of improved, accelerated, data-driven algorithms. Over the course of the last century, the Koopman operator has provided a mathematical framework for the study of dynamical systems, which facilitates conjugacy arguments and can provide efficient reduced descriptions. More recently, numerical approximations of the operator have enabled the analysis of a large number of deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems in a completely data-driven, essentially equation-free pipeline. Discrete or continuous time numerical algorithms (integrators, nonlinear equation solvers, optimization algorithms) are themselves dynamical systems. In this paper, we use this insight to leverage the Koopman operator framework in the data-driven study of such algorithms and discuss benefits for analysis and acceleration of numerical computation. For algorithms acting on high-dimensional spaces by quickly contracting them towards low-dimensional manifolds, we demonstrate how basis functions adapted to the data help to construct efficient reduced representations of the operator. We study the notion of weak amalgamation in the context of diagonal conjugacy classes. Generalizing results of Kechris and Rosendal, we prove that for every countable structure M, Polish group G of permutations of M, and $$n \ge 1$$ n ≥ 1 , G has a comeager n-diagonal conjugacy class iff the family of all n-tuples of G-extendable bijections between finitely generated substructures of M, has the joint embedding property and the weak amalgamation property. We characterize limits of weak Fraïssé classes that are not homogenizable. Finally, we investigate 1- and 2-diagonal conjugacy classes in groups of ball-preserving bijections of certain ordered ultrametric spaces.

Let $H$ be a complex Hilbert space and let ${\mathcal C}$ be a conjugacy class of finite rank self-adjoint operators on $H$ with respect to the action of unitary operators. We suppose that ${\mathcal C}$ is formed by operators of rank $k$ and for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$ the dimensions of distinct maximal eigenspaces are distinct. Under the assumption that $\dim H\ge 4k$ we establish that every bijective transformation $f$ of ${\mathcal C}$ preserving the commutativity in both directions is induced by a unitary or anti-unitary operator, i.e. there is a unitary or anti-unitary operator $U$ such that $f(A)=UAU^{*}$ for every $A\in {\mathcal C}$. A simple example shows that the condition concerning the dimensions of maximal eigenspaces cannot be omitted.

Cellular automata are topological dynamical systems. We consider the problem of deciding whether two cellular automata are conjugate or not. We also consider deciding strong conjugacy, that is, conjugacy by a map that commutes with the shift maps. We show that the following two sets of pairs of one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata are recursively inseparable: (i) pairs where the first cellular automaton has strictly higher entropy than the second one, and (ii) pairs that are strongly conjugate and both have zero topological entropies. This implies that the following decision problems are undecidable: Given two one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata $F$ and $G$: Are $F$ and $G$ conjugate? Is $F$ a factor of $G$? Is $F$ a subsystem of $G$? All of these are undecidable in both strong and weak variants (whether the homomorphism is required to commute with the shift or not, respectively). The aim of this paper is to classify cohomogeneity one isometric actions on the 4-dimensional Minkowski space $$\mathbb {R}^{3,1}$$ , up to orbit equivalence. Representations, up to conjugacy, of the acting groups in $$O(3,1) < imes \mathbb {R}^{3,1}$$ are given in both cases, proper and non-proper actions. When the action is proper, the orbits and the orbit spaces are determined.

The following long-standing problem in combinatorics was first posed in 1993 by Gessel and Reutenauer. For which multisubsets $B$ of the symmetric group $\fS_n$ is the quasisymmetric function $$Q(B) = \sum_{\pi \in B}F_{\Des(\pi), n}$$ a symmetric function? Here $\Des(\pi)$ is the descent set of $\pi$ and $F_{\Des(\pi), n}$ is Gessel's fundamental basis for the vector space of quasisymmetric functions. The purpose of this paper is to provide a useful characterization of these multisets. Using this characterization we prove a conjecture of Elizalde and Roichman. Two other corollaries are also given. The first is a short new proof that conjugacy classes are symmetric sets, a well known result first proved by Gessel and Reutenauer. Our second corollary is a unified explanation that both left and right multiplication of symmetric multisets, by inverse $J$-classes, is symmetric. In this note we provide a full conjugacy and subdifferential calculus for convex convex-composite functions in finite-dimensional space. Our approach, based on infimal convolution and cone-convexity, is straightforward and yields the desired results under a verifiable Slater-type condition, with relaxed monotonicity and without lower semicontinuity assumptions on the functions in play. The versatility of our findings is illustrated by a series of applications in optimization and matrix analysis, including conic programming, matrix-fractional, variational Gram, and spectral functions., Comment: 30 pages

Based on technical results obtained in our previous work, we completely reduce the problem to the classification of continuous fields of Kirchberg algebras over the classifying spaces. We classify up to conjugacy the group generated by a commuting pair of a periodic diffeomorphism and a hyperelliptic involution on an oriented closed surface. This result can be viewed as a refinement of Ishizaka's result on classification of the mapping classes of hyperelliptic periodic diffeomorphisms. We study the classification of group actions on C*-algebras up to equivariant KK-equivalence. We show that any group action is equivariantly KK-equivalent to an action on a simple, purely infinite C*-algebra. We show that a conjecture of Izumi is equivalent to an equivalence between cocycle conjugacy and equivariant KK-equivalence for actions of torsion-free amenable groups on Kirchberg algebras. Let G be a cyclic group of prime order. We describe its actions up to equivariant KK-equivalence, based on previous work by Manuel K\"ohler. Let $G$ be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p \geq 0$. At the 1966 International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow, Robert Steinberg conjectured that two elements $a, a' \in G$ are conjugate in $G$ if and only if $f(a)$ and $f(a')$ are conjugate in $\operatorname{GL}(V)$ for every rational irreducible representation $f: G \rightarrow \operatorname{GL}(V)$. Steinberg showed that the conjecture holds if $a$ and $a'$ are semisimple, and also proved the conjecture when $p = 0$. In this paper, we give a counterexample to Steinberg's conjecture. Specifically, we show that when $p = 2$ and $G$ is simple of type $C_5$, there exist two non-conjugate unipotent elements $u, u' \in G$ such that $f(u)$ and $f(u')$ are conjugate in $\operatorname{GL}(V)$ for every rational irreducible representation $f: G \rightarrow \operatorname{GL}(V)$., Comment: to appear in Transform. Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a $II_1$ factor acting on the Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$, and $\mathscr{M}_{\textrm{aff}}$ be the Murray-von Neumann algebra of closed densely-defined operators affiliated with $\mathscr{M}$. Let $\tau$ denote the unique faithful normal tracial state on $\mathscr{M}$. By virtue of Nelson's theory of non-commutative integration, $\mathscr{M}_{\textrm{aff}}$ may be identified with the completion of $\mathscr{M}$ in the measure topology. In this article, we show that $M_n(\mathscr{M}_{\textrm{aff}}) \cong M_n(\mathscr{M})_{\textrm{aff}}$ as unital ordered complex topological $*$-algebras with the isomorphism extending the identity mapping of $M_n(\mathscr{M}) \to M_n(\mathscr{M})$. Consequently, the algebraic machinery of rank identities and determinant identities are applicable in this setting. As a step further in the Heisenberg-von Neumann puzzle discussed by Kadison-Liu (SIGMA, 10 (2014), Paper 009), it follows that if there exist operators $P, Q$ in $\mathscr{M}_{\textrm{aff}}$ satisfying the commutation relation $Q \; \hat \cdot \; P \; \hat - \; P \; \hat \cdot \; Q = {i\mkern1mu} I$, then at least one of them does not belong to $L^p(\mathscr{M}, \tau)$ for any $0 < p \le \infty$. Furthermore, the respective point spectrums of $P$ and $Q$ must be empty. Hence the puzzle may be recasted in the following equivalent manner - Are there invertible operators $P, A$ in $\mathscr{M}_{\textrm{aff}}$ such that $P^{-1} \; \hat \cdot \; A \; \hat \cdot \; P = I \; \hat + \; A$? We generalize the Chebotarev density formulas of Dawsey (2017) and Alladi (1977) to the setting of arbitrary finite Galois extensions of number fields $L/K$. In particular, if $C \subset G = \textrm{Gal}(L/K)$ is a conjugacy class, then we establish that the Chebotarev density is the following limit of partial sums of ideals of $K$: \[ -\lim_{X\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{\substack{2\leq N(I)\leq X \\ I \in S(L/K; C)}} \frac{\mu_K(I)}{N(I)} = \frac{|C|}{|G|}, \] where $\mu_K(I)$ denotes the generalized M\"obius function and $S(L/K;C)$ is the set of ideals $I\subset \mathcal{O}_K$ such that $I$ has a unique prime divisor $\mathfrak{p}$ of minimal norm and the Artin symbol $\left[\frac{L/K}{\mathfrak{p}}\right]$ is $C$. In order to understand the structure of the "typical" element of an automorphism group, one has to study how large the conjugacy classes of the group are. For the case when typical is meant in the sense of Baire category, Truss proved that there is a co-meagre conjugacy class in Aut(Q, Comment: Most of this work previously appeared in the first version of the paper arXiv:1705.07593 which was split into 3 articles, including arXiv:1808.06121

On the unit ball $$\mathbb {B}^n$$ we consider the weighted Bergman spaces $$\mathscr {H}^2_\lambda (\mathbb {B}^n)$$ and their Toeplitz operators with bounded symbols. It is known from our previous work that if a closed subgroup H of $$\widetilde{\mathrm {SU}(n,1)}$$ has a multiplicity-free restriction for the holomorphic discrete series of $$\widetilde{\mathrm {SU}(n,1)}$$ , then the family of Toeplitz operators with H-invariant symbols pairwise commute. In this work we consider the case of maximal abelian subgroups of $$\widetilde{\mathrm {SU}(n,1)}$$ and provide a detailed proof of the pairwise commutativity of the corresponding Toeplitz operators. To achieve this we explicitly develop the restriction principle for each (conjugacy class of) maximal abelian subgroup and obtain the corresponding Segal–Bargmann transform. In particular, we obtain a multiplicity one result for the restriction of the holomorphic discrete series to all maximal abelian subgroups. We also observe that the Segal–Bargman transform is (up to a unitary transformation) a convolution operator against a function that we write down explicitly for each case. This can be used to obtain the explicit simultaneous diagonalization of Toeplitz operators whose symbols are invariant by one of these maximal abelian subgroups.

We give a Lie-theoretic explanation for the convex polytope which parametrizes the globally smooth solutions of the topological-antitopological fusion equations of Toda type (tt$^*$-Toda equations) which were introduced by Cecotti and Vafa. It is known from [GL] [GIL1] [M1] [M2] that these solutions can be parametrized by monodromy data of a certain flat $SL_{n+1}\mathbb{R}$-connection. Using Boalch's Lie-theoretic description of Stokes data, and Steinberg's description of regular conjugacy classes of a linear algebraic group, we express this monodromy data as a convex subset of a Weyl alcove of $SU_{n+1}$., Comment: 27 pages

In 1933 B.~H.~Neumann constructed uncountably many subgroups of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ which act regularly on the primitive elements of $\mathbb Z^2$. As pointed out by Magnus, their images in the modular group ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb Z)\cong C_3*C_2$ are maximal nonparabolic subgroups, that is, maximal with respect to containing no parabolic elements. We strengthen and extend this result by giving a simple construction using planar maps to show that for all integers $p\ge 3$, $q\ge 2$ the triangle group $\Gamma=\Delta(p,q,\infty)\cong C_p*C_q$ has uncountably many conjugacy classes of nonparabolic maximal subgroups. We also extend results of Tretkoff and of Brenner and Lyndon for the modular group by constructing uncountably many conjugacy classes of such subgroups of $\Gamma$ which do not arise from Neumann's original method. These maximal subgroups are all generated by elliptic elements, of finite order, but a similar construction yields uncountably many conjugacy classes of torsion-free maximal subgroups of the Hecke groups $C_p*C_2$ for odd $p\ge 3$. Finally, an adaptation of work of Conder yields uncountably many conjugacy classes of maximal subgroups of $\Delta(2,3,r)$ for all $r\ge 7$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We study the regularity of the conjugacy between an Anosov automorphism $L$ of a torus and its small perturbation. We assume that $L$ has no more than two eigenvalues of the same modulus and that $L^4$ is irreducible over $\mathbb Q$. We consider a volume-preserving $C^1$-small perturbation $f$ of $L$. We show that if Lyapunov exponents of $f$ with respect to the volume are the same as Lyapunov exponents of $L$, then $f$ is $C^{1+\text{H\"older}}$ conjugate to $L$. We construct an infinite word w over the 5-letter alphabet such that for every factor f of w of length at least two, there exists a cyclic permutation of f that is not a factor of w. In other words, w does not contain a non-trivial conjugacy class. This proves the conjecture in Gamard et al. [Theoret. Comput. Sci. 726 (2018) 1–4].
